Reflect, Remember, Rejoice with Our Heroes’ Trees at Peoria Public Library
Explore 500 Years of Latino American History This Fall
Our Heroes’ Tree is a national initiative that started at West Point in 2005. Now it is coming to Peoria Public Library for the first time, giving Peorians a chance to honor and recognize the Veterans in their lives. An Our Heroes’ Tree is an evergreen decorated with white lights, two crossed American flags and a yellow bow on top. It is covered with ornaments made by family members that list and recognize Veterans and each Peoria Public Library branch will have one. The recognition of Veterans will start with a kickoff on Saturday, November 7 at North Branch at 11:00 a.m. This program will honor the service and sacrifices of our military families. Enjoy a performance by the Air National Guard Chamber Ensemble Quintet and an appearance by the Air National Guard Color Guard. Hear City Councilman Eric Turner speak about his time in Vietnam. Then either create an ornament to honor your Veterans or make an ornament at home and hang it at any branch. The Our Heroes’ Trees will remain at each Peoria Public Library location from November 7 through December 31. Each location will have craft supplies for you to make ornaments during the same time period. Those with questions may call (309) 497-2069.
A series of four documentaries and discussions,
Latino Americans: 500 Years of History, will be presented at North Branch on four Monday evenings through a competitive grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA). “Latino Americans are the country’s largest minority group, with more than 50 million people, and still many people are unaware of their rich and varied history and culture,” said Roberta Koscielski, Assistant Director of Peoria Public Library. Peoria Public Library also received the six-part, NEH-supported documentary film “Latino Americans,” created for PBS in 2013 by the WETA public television station. The award-winning series chronicles the history of Latinos in the United States from the 16th century to present day. The following episodes will be shown: October 29 at 6:00 p.m. Dr. Amy Scott, professor of History at Bradley University, will lead a showing of Episode III: War and Peace (1942-1954). If You Like the Game Bloodborne... by Amanda Hildebrand Bloodborne is a difficult third person action adventure game by the creators of the Souls series. The series already presented a darker take on classic fantasy, and this game took it darker still, even incorporating elements of Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. Since we're just coming off of the Halloween season it felt appropriate to go with a Lovecraftian theme for this month's recommendations. Obviously if you've not already tried any books by H.P. Lovecraft himself, that's the first step, but once you've read those, and you're wanting more, try these following books. From a Buick 8 by Stephen King – Police troopers find a vintage Buick and through experimentation discover that is opens to another dimension entirely, one home to horrible creatures. Also by Stephen King is the short story “Crouch End” which can be found in the collection Nightmares and Dreamscapes. A couple takes a wrong turn in Crouch End and wind up horribly lost amongst Lovecraftian horrors. John Dies at the End by David Wong is difficult to accurately describe, much less succinctly summarize, but a multidimensional plot and horrifying creatures gives it a definite Lovecraftian feel. The book starts by saying you should not have ever picked it up, and is both a parody of horror and sincere horror itself. Darkness on the Edge of Town by Brian Keene – The small town of Walden wakes up one day to find that it is completely surrounded by impenetrable darkness. With no contact to the outside world the town waits on edge, as the few people who venture into the darkness are never seen again. There is something out there in the darkness.
HOT HOT New New Titles Titles
November by Robin Helenthal
Stars of Fortune is the first book in The Guardians Trilogy by Nora Roberts. Three stars were created by three goddesses of the moon to rejoice in the rise of their new queen. One star of fire, one of ice and one of water but when they fell from the sky they put the fate of all worlds in danger. Three women and three men will have to join forces to find the stars….Sasha Riggs is an artist who has been having disturbing dreams and nightmares which she uses to create unusual paintings. The visions that she has, lead her to the island of Corfu where she meets five others that are looking for the fire star. Sasha recognizes them because she has drawn them in her paintings: there is a magician, an archaeologist, a wanderer, a fighter and a loner. All of them searching and all of them have their own secrets. Sasha is the seer of the group and Bran Killian is the magician who gives her the strength and support to hold them all together. The six have to work as a team to find the fire star under the sea and resist the threat that is trying to pull them apart and keep them from completing their quest. The Magic Strings of Frankie: A Novel by Mitch Albom is the story of Frankie Preston, the greatest guitarist to ever live and the six lives he changes with his magical blue strings. The book is narrated by the voice of Music who tells the tale of Frankie Pesto, a war orphan, raised by a blind music teacher in a tiny Spanish town. When he is nine years old, he is sent to America in the bottom of a boat with his only possession, an old guitar with six prized strings. His journey through life takes him through the musical times of the 20th century, he plays everything from classical to rock and roll and some of the stars he performs with are Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, and KISS. During this time, he also becomes a recording star himself but he finds his gift of music is also his burden. He can affect people’s futures and each time a life is altered, one of his guitar strings turns blue. Frankie disappears when he is at the top of his career and he becomes a legend. He returns just before his death to change one last life. Mitch Albom is a musician himself and his message in this book is “everyone joins a band in this life” and the connections we make on our journey change us all.
In The Guilty by David Baldacci, Will Robie returns to his hometown to confront his past. He was one of the government’s most professional and disciplined assassins but on his last assignment, he failed to pull the trigger and became a man without a mission or purpose. He is back to face his past to move on to his future. Robie left his hometown of Cantrell, Mississippi after graduating from high school, cutting all ties and never looking back. Now he has returned because his father Dan Robie, a local attorney and elected town judge has been arrested and charged with murder and refuses to defend himself. Could he be guilty? Will, with Jessica Reel at his side, begins his own investigation into his father’s case but is treated with distrust by the community because of the way he left town and abandoned his family. As he digs into the case, he unearths more questions and finds a hidden side of Cantrell where he must deal with the choices that he and his father made long ago and this time there may not be an escape for either of them. Warheart by Terry Goodkind is the sequel and conclusion of a story that began with The Omen Machine, The Third Kingdom and Severed Souls. It is the story of Richard Rahl and Kahlan Amnell. In this final book, all seems lost. Evil will consume and takeover the D’Haran Empire but Amnell is the last Confessor and will wager everything. By doing so, she will change the world forever. Japanese Lover by Isabel Allende is a love story and a multigenerational epic. The story begins in Poland in 1939 during the reign of Hitler, when Alma Belasco is sent to San Franciso by her parents to live safely with her aunt and uncle. There she meets and falls in love with Ichimei Fukuda, the son of the Japanese gardener. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Ichimei and his family are sent to an internment camp for Japanese Americans that is run by the United States government. Even though Alma and Ichimei reunite many times during their lives, their love is one that they are forced to hide from the world. Decades later, Irina Bazili meets Alma and her grandson Seth at the Lark House nursing home where she is a care worker and Alma is a resident. As Irina and Seth become friends, they also become interested in the mysterious gifts and letters that Alma receives. What they learn is that Ishimei and Alma have kept their secret passion alive for seventy years and they are still contacting each other. With this book, Allende takes reads on an exploration of the questions of identity, abandonment, redemption and the impact that fate plays in our lives.

The Biography and Non-Fiction Book Club will meet on Sunday, December 13 at 3:00 p.m. at North Branch to discuss Sapiens: A Brief History of Mankind by Yuval Noah Harari. Homo sapiens rules the world because it is the only animal that can believe in things that exist purely in its own imagination, such as gods, states, money and human rights. Starting from this provocative idea, Sapiens goes on to retell the history of our species from a completely fresh perspective. It explains that money is the most pluralistic system of mutual trust ever devised; that capitalism is the most successful religion ever invented; that the treatment of animals in modern agriculture is probably the worst crime in history; and that even though we are far more pow& erful than our ancient ancestors, we aren’t non-fiction much happier. book group
The Bibliophiles Book Club will meet on Tuesday, November 3 at 1:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette by Hampton Sides. The Sci-Fi Fantasy Book Club will meet on Monday, December 14 at Lakeview Branch at 6:30 p.m. to discuss London Falling by Paul Cornell. Police officers Quill, Costain, Sefton, and Ross know the worst of London—or they think they do. While investigating a mobster’s mysterious death, they come into contact with a strange artifact and accidentally develop the Sight. Suddenly they can see the true evil haunting London’s streets. Armed with police instincts and procedures, the four officers take on the otherworldly creatures secretly prowling London. Football lore and the tragic history of a Tudor queen become entwined in their pursuit of an age-old witch with a penchant for child sacrifice. But when London’s monsters become aware of their meddling, the officers must decide what they are willing to sacrifice to clean up their city, in London Falling by Paul Cornell.
The YA Book Club for Adults will meet on Tuesday, December 15 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss Seventeenth Summer by Maureen Daly. Until the summer before college, Angie Morrow didn’t really date. But no one - not even Angie’s mother - can resist the charm of Jack Duluth. His good looks grab Angie’s attention from the moment in June when Jack throws Angie a smile at McKight’s drugstore. And on their first date sailing under the stars - when Jack leans in and whispers to Angie, “You look nice with the wind in your hair,” the strange new feelings begin. Tingles, prickles, warmth: the tell-tale signs of romance. It’s the beginning of an unforgettable summer for Angie. Maureen Daly had created a love story so honest that it has withstood the test of time. Today, this classic is enjoyed by many who think of it as the quintessential love story, and as a glimpse of love in the 1940’s; a refreshing alternative to modern love stories, reflecting the beauty and innocence of new love.
Gardot’s Music Queries The Currency of a Man by Sarah Farrell In her fourth studio album, jazz singer Melody Gardot poses the question, what exactly is the currency of a man? Gardot’ s voice is soft and delicate due to a car accident that left her bedridden for a year and caused her to be hypersensitive to both sound and light. Despite this adversity, she still perseveres musically, having released four full-length studio albums and two EP’s. Gardot’s Currency of a Man debuted at #1 on Billboard’s jazz charts, and the album’s somber ballad, “Morning Sun” is described by Billboard as being a “sweet lullaby”. Currency of a Man’s fifth track, “Don’t Misunderstand” is by far the most unique song on the album, as it features haunting, overlapping vocals in the beginning as well as a lovely string orchestra and an ominous draw organ, drawing inspiration from New Orleans gospel music. Melody Gardot’s album can be found at your local Peoria Public Library. Look for similar jazz artists on Freegal and download with your library card and PIN.
