Bid on a ride in a vintage War Bird North American AT-6 or a fabulous airplane wing coffee table, and other exciting items. Chat with friends while you enjoy a glass of wine or a piece of birthday cake. The Gallery will feature a display by the Prairie Fiber Arts Guild as well as local artists who will show their creations. You won’t want to miss this party, so call now to order your ticket!
Join author and Shelton descendant Ruthie Shelton on Friday, September 18 at 1:00 p.m. at North Branch in the McKenzie Room as she talks about her new book Inside the Shelton Gang: One Daughter’s Discovery. Until recently, Ruthie Shelton had never heard of the Shelton Gang, but that all changed when her father “Little Carl” had heart surgery and began talking about the past as he came out of a coma. As far as Ruthie knew, her Dad was a carpenter who gave her a wonderful life in Florida where she rode motorcycles, learned to shoot and drive cars at an early age. The babbled ramblings of the seriously ill man made no sense to her, but as he became coherent he told her she must listen to him and then he told her the truth about his past. Ruthie will talk about her journey of discovery and the real life account of the trials and tribulations the Sheltons endured all the way back to Prohibition. The Shelton Gang dominated the liquor market in Southern Illinois and later took control of gambling in Peoria in the late 1940s. Several were gunned down in Peoria and surviving members relocated to Florida. Now Ruthie Shelton returns to Peoria with her father’s stories in hand.

Jamie Jones Appointed McClure Branch Manager
Back to School With E-books
A familiar face at Peoria Public Library, Jamie Jones, has been appointed Branch Manager at McClure Branch, replacing Pat Pritchard who retired earlier this summer. Jamie, in addition to working in the Reference Department, led several book clubs and often conducted computer training classes on various subjects. Jamie said of her new responsibilities, “Now as McClure Branch Manager, I will take great pleasure in helping a wide variety of patrons with their widely ranging information needs, but I am most excited to be working inside this small, well-loved and historical branch, right in the heart of Peoria. From here, I think I’m better placed to serve Peoria’s families with a great collection and programming for all ages, not to mention making new connections with community groups and organizations to better serve them and the McClure community.” Previously, she was working at Main Library in the Reference Department. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English at Bradley University, graduating Summa Cum Laude in May 2010. Jamie says, “My time using Bradley’s Cullom-Davis Library while doing research for my English degree—coupled with memories of the wonders of the public library as a child—led to my decision to become a librarian before I graduated from Bradley University. So I went straight into the University of Illinois’s online MLIS (Master of Library and Information Science) program, graduating in May 2012 and still unsure of whether I preferred to work in an academic or public library.” Jamie has had extensive experience with library management and resources. “Not long before finishing my MLIS, I was hired on at Illinois Central College Library as a Circulation Assistant in their Peoria Downtown Campus in February 2012. I held this position, which involved managing the branch’s circulation duties and student employees, for a few months before being promoted to Reference Librarian at the Downtown Campus Library, where I had greater responsibility helping students and faculty to take advantage of the library’s resources. I continued as an ICC Reference Librarian until accepting a position as a Reference Assistant at the Peoria Public Library in the Main Library Reference Department in December of 2012 and a year later was promoted to Reference Librarian. At Peoria Public Library, I reveled in working with more diverse patrons and information needs, and especially thrived working with the electronic resources, maintaining access and usage information, and promoting them to patrons.” Please stop by and meet Manager Jamie Jones sometime soon and watch for more exciting programs at McClure Branch.

Lomax, a British army soldier, was captured by the Japanese during the Singapore campaign of 1942. A railroad buff, he took strange pleasure in his work as a POW on the Burma-Siam Railroad. When his captors discovered his detailed drawings of the railway, he was suspected as a spy and tortured for years. Fifty years later he discovered that the interpreter during his tortures was still alive. The two arranged a & meeting and Lomax forgave him. This is the non-fiction exciting, moving and truthful account.

The Bibliophiles Book Club will meet on Tuesday, October 6 at 1:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss Anne Morrow Lindbergh by Susan Hertog. In this first full-length study of Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Susan Hertog pierces the public image of Anne and Charles to reveal their story from inside the marriage. While biographies of Charles Lindbergh have captured his spirit as the twentieth century’s first international celebrity, Susan Hertog plumbs the depths of Anne’s search for her own identity and vision as she struggles to remain faithful to her marriage and to motherhood.

Club Read will meet on Wednesday, October 28 at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeview Branch to discuss The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey by Walter Moseley . Ptolemy Grey is a 91-year-old African American living alone in violent South Central L.A. Frail and suffering from dementia, he can’t remember to eat, his mind “scattered over nearly a hundred years.” He relives events marked by racism, lynching, poverty, and longing for his long-dead wife. His great-grand nephew, Reggie, takes him to the grocery store and prompts him to eat. When Reggie is killed in a drive-by shooting, Ptolemy’s days appear to be numbered. But Robyn, a beautiful, resourceful 17-year-old, steps in. As she sees to Ptolemy’s needs, she awakens his desire for the lucidity he once had. Mosley’s dramatic departure from his Easy Rawlins and Leonid McGill crime novels appears to be a very personal one, a deeply thoughtful, provocative, and often beautiful meditation on aging, memory, family, loss, and love.

The Sci-Fi Fantasy Book Club will meet on Monday, October 12 at Lakeview Branch at 6:30 p.m. to discuss Operation Chaos by Poul Anderson. In a war waged against Black Magic, the fact that Steve is a werewolf and his wife is a highly skilled witch is not unusual. But their adventures prove very unusual, even for their world, when they are given the task of neutralizing an enemy’s ultimate weapon--the world’s most powerful demon. The YA Book Club for Adults will meet on Tuesday, October 20 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss Things We Know By Heart by Jessi Kirby. After Quinn loses her boyfriend in an accident, she reaches out to the recipients of his donated organs in hopes of picking up the pieces of her life. She doesn’t want to give in to it—especially since he has no idea how they’re connected—but their time together has made Quinn feel alive again. No matter how hard she’s falling for Colton, each beat of his heart reminds her of all she’s lost…and all that’s at stake.
The Read on Book Club will meet on Tuesday, October 27 at 5:30 p.m. at Lincoln Branch to discuss Grand Opening: A Family Business Novel by Carl Weber. From New York Times Bestselling Authors Carl Weber and Eric Pete comes the game changing prequel to Family Business saga. Before Duncan Motors, there were the Duncan brothers: Louis, aka Sweet Lou, a lover of the ladies and life and a man you did not want to cross; Lawrence, aka Larry, a screw-up as attracted to trouble as it was to him; and Lavernius, better known as LC, the soft spoken college boy who just wanted to sell cars. There was also the mysterious and seductive Chippy, a woman who saw a way out of her circumstances and took it. Welcome to the familiar, but as you’ve never seen it before.
If You Like the Game ‘American McGee’s Alice’ by Amanda Hildebrand The video games American McGee’s Alice and the sequel, Alice, Madness Returns, feature a dark take on Alice in Wonderland, expanding on the story of Alice, including her life outside Wonderland. If you enjoyed these games and haven’t already read the classics by Carrol, do that first, but then you might also enjoy reading these other books. Splintered by A.G. Howard – Alyssa, descendant of Alice Liddell, worries for her sanity when she hears voices from flowers and insects, particularly considering her mother is currently in an asylum. An attempt to help her mother leads Alyssa to a darker, more dangerous version of Wonderland. The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor – Alice Liddell is actually Alyss, heir to the Wonderland throne, who escaped an attempt on her life to Victorian London. Her bodyguard, Hatter Madigan, is still looking for her to help her regain her rightful place as queen. Abarat by Clive Barker – Candy Quackenbush from Chickentown, USA, finds herself swept away to the surreal world of Abarat. She finds she was brought to this world for a reason, she has a destiny to save it. There are definite parallels to Alice in the strangeness of this world, and it deals with some very dark themes. Alice I Have Been by Melanie Benjamin – Alice Liddell Hargreaves looks back at her life. The book is a well-researched account of what became of the little girl that encouraged Lewis Carrol to write down his stories, and how it affected her life.
Book ‘Em Launches Murder on Whiskey Row at Mystery Event The Book ‘Em Mystery Book Club has spent the past 10 years co-writing a mystery, Murder on Whiskey Row, and will launch the book on Saturday, September 19 at 2:00 p.m. at Peoria Public Library Main Library with a discussion of the mystery genre and their new book, Murder on Whiskey Row. The event will feature door prizes and refreshments and books will be available for purchase. The action for the story begins at a mansion on Moss Avenue, which, in local lore, is called Whiskey Baron Row due to the many whiskey barons who built their homes on the bluff overlooking downtown Peoria in the late nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries. The City of Peoria becomes one of the characters in this local story of intrigue, and death. Maggie Nelson, former Public Relations person of the Peoria Public Library, stated, “ these local details kept my interest, making the book a fun read!” The book will be for sale at the discussion for $10.00 and in the Friendly Finds Bookstore at Main Library. The proceeds will go to the Friends of the Peoria Public Library. For more information on the book or the event, please contact programmingdept@ppl.peoria.lib.il.us.
