Deryck J. van Rensburg, Dean

As we conclude another academic year at Graziadio, I reflect on the many obstacles we’ve overcome to build our future as a values-based community. This year held many unforeseen hardships causing disruption across the globe. Nevertheless, the abundance of kindness, dedication, and perseverance has humbled me beyond words throughout these turbulent times. As I continue to witness our community’s unwavering commitment to service, purpose, and leadership, I want to express my sincerest gratitude. + To our students: Greatness is achieved when we overcome the barriers. Thank you for staying strong. + To our faculty and staff: We could not prosper without your tireless efforts. Thank you for your dedication. + To our alumni and community: I am proud to have you as part of our Graziadio family. Thank you for showing your unconditional support. As we move forward in the midst of the fourth industrial revolution, we remain anchored in our Christian values and strengthen our efforts to be ethical in focus while global in orientation. In the wake of COVID-19, our community came together to pivot and implement new learning modalities, new programs, and adhere to the rapidly-changing academic landscape. Additionally, we’ve made strides in increasing our global footprint with the recent acquisition of the Château d’Hauteville by Pepperdine University as well as cultivating new sustainable business ideas at our 8th Annual SEER Symposium and welcoming new corporate partnerships. All of these critical elements help us move one step closer to achieving our strategic vision for the future of Graziadio. With over 450 MBA programs in the nation, I’m proud to announce we’ve continued to be recognized as a leading business school, ranking as a Best Business School by U.S. News and World Report, #12 Top 25 Online MBA Program and #9 Greatest Resources for Minority Students by the Princeton Review, and recognized nationally as a Best Business School for Entrepreneurship by Bloomberg Businessweek. I encourage you to learn more about our school’s recent milestones, academic excellence, and how we are fulfilling our mission of developing Best for the World Leaders.

ASPIRE 2025 STRATEGIC PLAN Through our ASPIRE 2025 Strategic Vision, we can establish a global distinction in developing Best for the World Leaders. We have mapped out the framework for the future of Graziadio based on three underlying principles: + Create a positive global impact by teaching responsible business practices. + Adapt our curriculum to meet the thresholds of our graduates and employers. + Equip our institution to evolve alongside the coexistence of people and machines.

ABOUT GRAZIADIO At Pepperdine Graziadio, we believe in challenging the status quo of what it means to be a leading business school. Our intrinsic desire to create meaningful change in the world acts as the guiding compass in all that we do, led by our core mission and values. Anchored in our Christian values, it is our mission to foster a community of ethically-focused leaders and entrepreneurs driven to create meaningful change both within their industry and within their communities. By promoting transformational learning and creating applied knowledge, we strive to cultivate Best for the World Leaders dedicated to doing what is right, instead of what is easy, and acknowledging the journey to success is as important as the end result.

OUR VALUES

5

TODAY not tomorrow

COURAGE with compassion

INTEGRITY always

PIONEERING spirit

These founding principles work as strategic initiatives providing structure to how Graziadio will excel against its goals based on four fundamental pillars: students, faculty, people and organizations, and the ecosystem. The future is now, and we are ready.

AACSB ACCREDITATION Pepperdine Graziadio hosted the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), for its periodic Peer Review Team for the Continuous Improvement site visit. The 2020 visit ended as a remarkable success, with the AACSB team extending Graziadio’s accreditation for another five years. The AACSB is an international accreditation, signifying a business school meets all prescribed, rigorous standards.

GRAZIADIO CAREER OPPORTUNITY EXCHANGE

COVID-19 RESPONSE

Concerned about the difficult employment market facing Pepperdine Graziadio students, Sinan Kanatsiz, CEO of KCOMM and Pepperdine Graziadio board member, spearheaded an initiative to support career development. As founder and chairman of the Internet Marketing Association (IMA), Kanatsiz generously dedicated IMA’s resources to build an online landing page for students to post their professional profiles to gain exposure and build new relationships.

In a time of uncertainty, the Pepperdine Graziadio Business School came together to address the COVID-19 pandemic and uncover new ways to adapt as a University to meet student expectations and address industry challenges presented by the sudden change in the current business landscape.

Students could showcase their skills/backgrounds to IMA’s 50,000 enterprise members by uploading a 59-second video, written personal statement, and resume to the IMA Indi Platform. The landing page was also shared with Graziadio board members, alumni, businesses and professional organizations, to help students identify potential employment opportunities and make important connections.

THE COVID-19 COMEBACK

GRAZIADIO EXPERTS WEIGH IN ON SMALL BUSINESS CHALLENGES, RESILIENCE, AND THE ECONOMY COVID-19 is reorienting our relationship with business, education, and the outside world, transforming the way we live, work, and learn. Graziadio experts provided insight related to strengthening cybersecurity, navigating the Paycheck Protection Program, mitigating enormous impacts to the labor market, seizing digital innovation opportunities, and providing compassionate and visionary leadership during this unprecedented time. As businesses and employees prepare for a “new normal,” Pepperdine Graziadio experts continue to share their knowledge and provide guidance on how to successfully operate in the post-pandemic economy.

GRAZIADIO RESILIENCE SERIES BUSINESS KNOWLEDGE FOR NAVIGATING TURBULENT TIMES

Despite the enormous health impacts and economic challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses have unprecedented opportunities to innovate, make new connections, and reimagine their strategy and operations. In an effort to help businesses thrive amidst this disruption, Pepperdine Graziadio hosted free webinars that provided insight about how to navigate the COVID-19 crisis. The Resilience Series, moderated by Pepperdine Graziadio’s Dr. Charla Griffy-Brown, featured experts who discussed critical business issues such as supply-chain management, leadership, strategy, marketing, and the importance of taking care of employees.

PRESIDENT’S ACTION GROUP

The Graziadio Business School stands united against any and all forms of racial violence or oppression. We recognize that work needs to be done in our schools, cities, and across our nation and the Graziadio community will be—must be—part of that long overdue change. While diversity has always been an important cornerstone of our business, current events have ignited a fire within us to amplify our efforts. As we embark on this next phase of our journey, we have devoted additional resources to engage our community in both new and existing equality initiatives.

GRAZIADIO BOARD DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP Led by his own gift, Dean Van Rensburg challenged the Graziadio Board with a new scholarship initiative to emphasize that “diversity wins” and our school must match Los Angeles in terms of diversity. The Board responded en masse, launching the Graziadio Board Diversity Scholarship that supports students from underrepresented backgrounds.

NOTABLE ALUMNI MARISSA ANDRADA

FULLY-EMPLOYED MBA ‘92 CPO • CHIPOTLE As chief people officer for Chipotle, Marissa Andrada’s responsibilities go beyond traditional human resource tasks. Working directly with Chipotle leadership, Marissa has created a foundation fostering a culture where employees are encouraged to thrive and pursue their passions. Prior to Chipotle, Marissa worked for Kate Spade & Company, Starbucks, and GameStop Corporation. During her time at GameStop, the company doubled in business from $5 billion to $10 billion. A large part of this growth came from Marissa’s role in establishing a support system that provides opportunities for employees to become leaders and grow. Marissa has supported and watched several of her apprentices become leaders such as Dan Spalding, chief people officer at Zillow, and Laura Langehaug, vice president of human resources at Artemis Health. Graziadio Business School further solidified Marissa’s strengths in developing and executing human resource strategies. During a study group composed of team members from a variety of disciplines, there was one member who was not participating equally. The group unanimously elected Marisa to coach the individual to empower and encourage them to work collectively with the team, a talent that came naturally to Marissa. Marissa’s authenticity and uniqueness shines through in her love for fashion and styling. “There is a transformative nature of fashion that also translates to business. I own my personal sense of style and help encourage others to do the same; bring your authentic self to work with pride and passion.”

Stan also serves on the board of directors for the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum, supporting its mission to commemorate the past and educate and inspire an appreciation for the importance of flight to humanity. Stan says Graziadio was a time for personal growth, developing a deeper understanding of the world, and understanding the importance of making an impact that matters. Stan remembers that each day was an opportunity to learn from professors, collaborate with peers, and pursue new challenges.
