FiOps is an innovative solution that leverages business and data management processes.
Abstract FiOps is a technical solution offered by us that enables utilities to leverage and “geoenable” the right data at the right time from operational systems, such as GIS, AMI, and OMS to provide meaningful insights in a spatial context. Through the proper combination of client-licensed commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) software and our domain knowledge, software development and system integration capabilities, FiOps offers significantly higher value and lower cost of ownership. This paper seeks to introduce FiOps by outlining its value and general characteristics.
What is FiOps FiOps is our integrated service offering that is designed to enable utilities to gain spatial awareness of their operational data and to obtain more meaningful insights to improve decision-making. FiOps is not a product but a technology and data solution designed to provide data interoperability

and facilitate improved business operations. At Cyient we developed FiOps to introduce operational efficiencies into day-to-day utility transactions. FiOps enables efficient and effective engineering analysis, operations control, and storm and outage response, among other operational capabilities. It is designed to configure existing utility data using the client’s COTS licensed products, presenting results in a spatial context via an easily configurable user interface to meet the individual needs of various user “personas”.
How Can FiOps Help FiOps is a solution that enables utilities to improve customer service, regulatory compliance and operations cost. With FiOps, new software product licenses are not required as it fully utilizes the utility’s existing software products and licenses. And because it is already licensed, FiOps simply expands its use rather than inserting complexities associated with purchasing a new software solution.
FiOps services can be effectively leveraged to configure solutions for an Outage Map, a Load Profile, and a Voltage Profile.

Utilities can achieve the desired benefits with a minimum of IT management interaction. The main features of two key FiOps modules, Outage Awareness, and Engineering Awareness are outlined below.
Outage Awareness Module (near real - time outage map) The FiOps Outage Awareness module can be configured to produce an outage map indicating known outages, density of outages across the service territory, meter status, current crew locations, and outage restoration status. For the outage map, data from available GIS network, outage management system (OMS), automated vehicle location system (AVL), and smart meter data management system will be used. The goal is to use the existing scheduling systems and status data from field tools to enable users to “visualize” circuit load polygons, individual or nested outages, proximities of repair crews to outage locations, and estimated restoration times. 02
The outage map is scalable for internal or external audiences and its responsive design makes it easily deployable as an office or field/mobile solution. The add-on Regulatory Awareness module of FiOPs enables the utility to share more granular or summary data with external stakeholders, including the utility’s customers and regulators.

Engineering and Planning Module This FiOps module enables engineering planning and design organizations within the utility to take advantage of the powerful new data that is available to the utility through the deployment of automated meter infrastructure (AMI) and other smart grid components. There are two key functional areas: load profile and voltage data. This module is a key component in our approach to leverage the investment in smart grid technology within the utility’s transmission and distribution operations.
Engineering Awareness • Circuit Load Profile • Circuit Voltage Profile • Transformer Load Profile • Transformer Voltage Profile • Customer Load • Customer Voltage Profile
Load Profile Load profiles can be aggregated to the transformer and/or circuit level to help better understand the load flow which in turn can be used to evaluate whether critical assets on the circuits (transformers, fuses, and other strategic devices) are adequately sized. This data can help assess potential power quality
03
issues and outage threats, and to determine whether loading conditions exceed known thermal and other loading limits. By seamlessly integrating this data with power flow analytics tools, utilities can obtain a realistic profile of circuit loading and balancing conditions. Voltage Data Another component of the Engineering and Planning module is a voltage profile that utilizes smart meter data for one or more service points. A voltage profile can also be developed spanning several “bellwether” meters (or strategic nodes) placed strategically along a circuit, then integrated with a GIS network, to help obtain critical and previously unattainable intelligence about the circuit performance. These voltage profiles can then be compared to the expected values for individual service points or strategic nodes, allowing the utility to undertake proactive corrective actions on the circuit to maintain power quality. The voltage data at strategic nodes can also be evaluated through the power flow analytics tools for Volt/VAR control of the network and to configure a “Device State Model” to create a pseudo-smart grid. Below are examples of some of the benefits that our clients were able to achieve through FiOps solutions: • Provide near real-time outage information to internal and external users through interactive outage maps • Build load profiles for each customer/service point and determine power quality at each service point, based on meter data voltage profiles • Build a load profile on transformers based on customers’ energy consumption • Determine voltage profile of strategic nodes along a circuit, based on meter data, to derive a device state model • Implement Volt/VAR control strategies based on insights obtained through load profiling
Expertise is Key — Building Intelligence by Leveraging Success Our key capabilities enable the delivery of critical and necessary operational intelligence for our utility clients. These capabilities include data management and software development experience, operational support and engineering acumen. Data Management Experience We are the leading provider of connectivity data which utility companies depend upon to operate their networks. Using FiOps solutions and our knowledge of utilities’ needs that was gained though years of working with utilities worldwide, including building electric and gas network data, keeping the data current, and ensuring the highest possible standards of accuracy, we provide advance data management solutions to our clients.
