Perdeby under attack ANKE OLIVIER During a student parliamentary assembly held on 23 February, a mandate was tabled by the South African Students Congress (SASCO) requesting that an ombudsman or media tribunal be established for Perdeby. According to SASCO chairperson Sudube Ramokgopa, information that is published in Perdeby articles is distorted and biased. “We want a fair representation of both sides of a story,” Ramokgopa explained. “The role of the ombudsman is not exercised and it has become necessary.” Another SASCO member, Tokologo Ngakane, explained that all students must be able to raise their grievances to Perdeby. “We feel that Perdeby is more than just a tabloid and should be the voice of students,” said Ngakane. She also said that societies such as SASCO and the Pan Africanist Student Movement of Azania (PASMA) do not feel they can approach Perdeby. “We have never seen Perdeby as an ally, they are our last resort,” explained Ngakane. She added that Perdeby should cover more issues concerning student life so it can serve as a communication tool amongst students as well as
Kleinbooi Leogabe, SASCO member
between management and students. SASCO also feels that the Student Representative Council (SRC) should make better use of Perdeby to promote itself and become more visible. In reaction to a mandate being called for, Cilliers Brink, on behalf of the Democratic Alliance (DA), said that the DA nds such a suggestion ridiculous. “They [SASCO] don’t have a brain of their own,” Brink stated. “They can’t determine their own agenda. But what they can do is follow their national mother party, the ANC, and try to use power to silence people. They clearly want to cover up the truth.” The representative for the Congress of the People (COPE) on the SRC, Katlego Malatji, says that COPE is committed to free speech and freedom of the press. “We must wait for the proposal to be submitted by parliament. We can then determine whether it is within the connes of the law and only then can we entertain looking into solving the matter,” said Malatji. Chairperson of the SRC, Charl Oberholzer, stated that the SRC will take the mandate into consideration, but has no nal conclusion on the matter. “We have to determine if this is what students want. Perdeby is a service provider and students have
SRC members at the sitting of parliament
to be happy with the service it provides,” said Oberholzer. Head of Service Providers on the SRC, Duncan Platt, stated that a media tribunal would be impossible and unconstitutional because it acts against freedom of speech and press freedom. Platt also said that students who are unhappy with information that is published should pursue the matter according to the constitutional guidelines. Perdeby is answerable to the press ombudsman and any complaints against Perdeby or articles published in Perdeby should be sent through the ombudsman’s ofce. Carel Willemse, Editor-in-Chief of Perdeby stated that Perdeby has never been approached by either SASCO or parliament about these allegations, nor has it ever received press releases about their activities. Perdeby subsribes to the South African press code and if any member of the public feels unfairly treated in an article or that any article contravenes the press code, they are welcome to write a formal complaint to the ombudsman or the registrar of the university. They can also send complaints directly to perdeby.co.za. Photo: Jerome van Zyl

Once upon a time, there was a boy who loved coffee. He loved coffee so much that he drank it every day, twice, three times a day. He loved it so much that take-away coffee cups became his constant companion: like some freaky extension of his hand. He always had coffee with him. He loved coffee so much that he built up a tolerance against caffeine. Coffee didn’t keep him awake; it just made life blissful and beautiful. Some of his friends thought he had a problem. That much coffee can’t be completely healthy, they said. But the boy didn’t care. He had coffee. He was happy. Then there was a day. A terrible day. A dark, dark day. On this day, the boy had to get up early. He had overslept, and was late. There were deadlines and crises and insurmountable amounts of work. But all of this was ne. All of this was easy to deal with. The boy would go get coffee and then everything would be okay. But then, (alas, alack!) there was no coffee. There. Was. No. Coffee. Anywhere on campus. The boy could feel his powers slipping away. What was he to do without the lovely, the deliciously scented, dream-drink that was

Dear Tukkie In the last scene of the lm: “Scent of a Woman”, Al Pacino, playing the role of a retired army Colonel, intervenes on behalf of a student who is charged with refusing to reveal the identities of students who fouled their Head Master. While not condoning the act, he questions what he perceives to be a discrepancy in the school’s understanding of its values and legacy and the actual practice of nurturing future leaders. In his long speech before the school’s disciplinary board, he cautions inter alia, against what he refers to as “the amputation of the spirit” which destroys many a promising leader. Seen against the background of developmental theories which shed light on both the notion of young people perceiving themselves as having a “vocation to change the world” and the impact of the environment on their development, the Colonel makes an important point. Many young people display qualities which, if nurtured, could bring out the best in them. Others have energies that need to be channelled in a manner that will not only bring out the best in them but also benet others around them. If these are suppressed instead of being facilitated,

People you hate. It must have happened to you where, after a couple of drinks, you nd yourself bonding with someone you’ve disliked for years. This causes quite a crisis for the future of the relationship. Cheap vodka. After a while, it really stops mattering what it tastes like. This applies to tequila as well. Britney Spears music. Any pop music, really. Any bad music, actually. While under the inuence it’s not really about the lyrics or the melody anymore, it’s about the noise. Bad dancing. Let’s face it. You can’t dance. I certainly can’t dance. But when you’ve had a few too many, you think you have the slickest moves this side of Michael Jackson. You have dance-offs with complete strangers. the outcome is usually “amputated spirits”. Although it has been challenged by experts recently, there is a belief that a sh can only grow as big as the size of its fountain and the amount of water therein allow it. The same could be said of the limitations or otherwise of the environment in which young people are expected to develop. In spite of the above mentioned it is important to remember that every individual makes his/her own choices. There are universities in South Africa with a “pay off” line that reads as follows: “…where leaders are made”. In some cases, the “pay off” line is supported with programmes that show a genuine commitment to developing leaders for our developing and transforming societies. In others, the line stands alone with nothing happening to take it further. Our own university has a different “pay off” line which reads as follows: “leading minds”. This is supported in our present strategic plan by a commitment to nurture leadership by inter alia, exposing students to topical political issues, contexts other than those they know, training, creating opportunities for them to participate in leadership structures and encouraging them to think critically. There exists a myriad of structures where this is taking place. Students have their own societies (presently
numbering about 144), are part of formal structures such as the SRC, Service Providers, House Committees and several governing structures standing committees. In the classroom context, they engage in debates on topics which prepare them for participation in social discourses on various topics. Training is provided for all serving on formal structures. However, this is training to enable them to function in the portfolios they are chosen to serve in. Nurturing happens in and outside those structures and it entails facilitating the release of the potential that is in a person. People are gifted in many ways. This might rightly or wrongly create the impression that some want to shine brighter than others. Thus they become a threat to those in leadership positions Do you think that the present set up in your structures or the university allow you enough latitude to develop as a leader? Are you able to take initiative in the structures you are associated with and exercise your leadership skills? If not, your leaders must look at whether they are not “amputating” rather than releasing your spirits. Best wishes Prof McGlory Speckman

coffee? Surely, he would perish. Surely he wouldn’t survive. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a little for dramatic effect. Maybe there was coffee. Maybe all that happened was that one place was out of milk for half an hour and the other places just had really long queues. Maybe less people on campus would increase the chances of some people getting coffee within half an hour of ordering it. Maybe coffee deprivation makes me slightly crazy. Maybe I just didn’t have anything to write about this week. Maybe someone should give me free coffee. Maybe I’m trying to set the world record for using the word coffee the most times in one editorial. Maybe you should turn the page now and go read all the awesome articles in the paper this week. Go read the one about how to be a good roommate, or the one about how you can win RAMfest tickets or the article on the terrible incidences of homophobia in residences. Do all of this while you drink coffee. Drink coffee for the boy who couldn’t. If you drink coffee, you are sexy. Beyers like Elton John. Karaoke. It’s funny how the amount you’ve had to drink and the amount of bad music you are willing to tolerate increase exponentially. Eventually, you’re capable of listening to yourself sing. Eventually you’re willing to listen to any tone-deaf idiot sing, as long as you’re allowed to sing along. 6. MacDonald’s. You wouldn’t really eat it by choice, in the daylight, where people could see you, would you? 7. Other people. You know what I mean. 8. Bad jokes. This willingness to nd the worst jokes in the world funny escalates throughout the night. 9. Inexplicable bruises. From all the bad dancing and the cheap vodka and the sharp pointy edges of tables. 10. Hot barmen/women. Actually, they don’t necessarily need to be hot. 5.

Coming out in res
KATLEGO MKHWANAZI AND SIYAMMUKELA MAHLANGU After an incident in one of the male residences concerning discrimination against a gay resident was brought to Perdeby’s attention via email, Perdeby decided to investigate the treatment of gay students in residences. The resident in question has since withdrawn his complaint. He refused to speak to Perdeby, even on conditions of anonymity, telling Perdeby, “It has been sorted out.” However, several other people have come forward regarding this issue. For some students, life in res is an ideal living and social situation, for others it can create a platform to be judged or discriminated against because of their sexual orientation. David*, a gay student who lived in Taaibos for three years, told Perdeby, “It would be scary if people realised how many gay people there are in reses.” He has never been completely open about his sexaulity in res because he witnissed the discrimination against gay students rst hand. “It wasn’t an ideal environment,” he added.
For other homosexuals, being in a same-sex residence has never been a problem. “Being in an all-male residence helped me make friends and I met other gay guys as well,” said Jade Williams, an LLB student. Sakhile Msibi, a BA Languages student and a resident in Olienhout said,“If you have accepted who you are and embrace it then it makes it easier for your fellow residents to accept you,” said “Of course there are haters and [you] need to be able to stand up for [yourself].” According to Williams, there are certian homophobic people in residences who are vocal about how they feel. He claims that he has been referred to in derogatory terms while he still lived in res. Williams also explains that people are more civil these days. “No one will come up to you and slap you because you’re gay,” said Williams. “When you come out you’ll see that it’s not so bad, you must just be prepared to handle the bad side of things.” Many gay students however, nd the environment in less formal, mixed gender reses preferable. “My move from Boekenhout to TuksVillage during my rst
year had little to do with my sexuality, I simply preferred the less formal setting that TuksVillage had over the more traditional and formal setting at Boekenhout, ” said Thato Khethe, a third-year medical science student. Khethe also added that since he relates to girls better than guys, TuksVillage proved to be the best choice for him. Mfundo Mabhena, fourth-year BEd student, explains the alterntative. He says that people in residences are expected to respect one another and therefore it is difcult for them to practice homophobia unlike outside res where people can easily be homophobic. Being in a res environment can thus be helpful in teaching people to accept that you need to show respect in spite of another person’s sexuality. Most gay students can and do nd support systems within their residences. “When I still lived in Kiaat my house parents were my support system and they made feel welcomed and allowed me to be myself,” said Williams. “My house parents are to die for, there have been there for me since the beginning,” said Msibi. This is not always the case. “In some residences its either you’re straight or you’re closeted,” said Williams. “It is up to us [homosexual students] to form a support group within residences as very few heterosexual students understand what most homosexual students struggle with on a daily basis,” said Khethe. Up and Out, the university’s gay and lesbain society, forms part of that support group. According to Bes Liebenberg, the TuksRes Student Support cocoordinator, the university will offer help and support to any student who is faced with any such difculty. Liebenberg said that she offers general counselling to students and then refers them to the appropriate people who can assist them further. Two of the qualities that a person needs in order to survive an environment where living space is shared, are tolerance and acceptance. In residences, students come across different races, religions, and culural backgrounds and someone’s sexual preference ahould be no exception to that rule. * Name has been changed because of the sensitive nature of the article. When a formal res just isn’t for you KATLEGO MKHWANAZI Approximately twenty rst years have moved out of formal residences since January. One of the reasons given for the moves is that some rst years are unable to adjust to the way things are run in formal residences. “First years struggle to adhere to rules such as study times and sharing a room or bathroom,” said Marguérite Snyman, Asterhof primaria. According to Snyman, two other major reasons for the move of the rst years is that they don’t know what they want to study and they lack support from their families. Marga Zeelie, Head of Placement Management in TuksRes, said that TuksRes has received requests from both parents and students who wanted their children to be moved to informal residences, like Tuks Village. Zeelie conrmed that there are currently no available rooms in residences. “Everything is full at this stage.” Some of the rst years that have moved out have been fortunate enough to nd rooms in a more informal setting. This was only possible through assessment of the students’ circumstances by TuksRes placement management. According to Zeelie, placement will now only be based on academic merit. “Accommodation is limited, yet the demand is great,” he said. “There are currently 1021 rst year students on the waiting lists.” According to Lange, rst years shouldn’t make hasty decisions about moving out in the rst few weeks. “It takes time to adjust,” said Lange. “But res life is not for everyone.” Zeelie also encouraged rst years to hang in there. “You will make great friends in res.” Lange also said that when people apply for res placement, despite the information made available by residences on the university’s website and in res booklets, they often have no idea of what a formal res is. This becomes a contributing factor in the approach that students have towards res life.
“When moving into a Tuks residence, do so with a positive attitude mind an open mind,” said Snyman. “Voice your concerns and complaints in a respectful manner as this skill is essential throughout life. Accompany your complaints with practical solutions as far as possible.” The choice to move out of a formal residence after two months is an indication that there are some rst years who are unhappy in their residences. If a rst year is unhappy, they can raise their concerns with
their rst year guardian HK or their primaria or the Head of Residences. “Keep in mind that the very same issues may arise in another residence, so rather nd a solution in your current residence,” said Snyman. Res should provide a comfortable environment for a student to live and study in. Perhaps then, if that is not the case, it is best to address these issues earlier on in the year. Ms van Vuuren’s nal gift ANKE OLIVIER
Marijke van Vuuren, an English lecturer at the University of Pretoria, spent most of 2010 completing her D.Litt, which would have been submitted for examination early this year. She passed away 11 December 2011. Her unnished thesis will be edited and submitted for the degree to be awarded posthumously. “It will be her nal gift to us,” explained her doctoral supervisor and co-lecturer at the Department of English, Professor David Medalie. Medalie, in consultation with her husband, Prof. Rex van Vuuren, will take on the task of editing her unnished thesis and turning it into a book later this year. Medalie explains that it is merely Van Vuuren’s nal conclusion which is missing from her nal thesis. According to Medalie, the reasons Van Vuuren embarked on her doctorate was deeply personal and rose from her belief in the importance of the concerns it addresses. In her study entitled, The Truth of Wounded Memories: the Question of Forgiveness in Selected Post-Apartheid Texts, Van Vuuren looks at the ways in which certain South African writers in the post-apartheid period have explored the aftermath of a scarred and damaged society. She particularly focuses on the possibilities of forgiveness and the impulse to come to terms with a painful past. “Marijke believed passionately in the liberating power of forgiveness,” Medalie continued. He describes Van Vuuren as utterly free of self-importance and with no desire of self-
promotion. He also notes that her thesis strikes him as a crystallisation of all the values which informed her life. “On every page is the calm and carefully deliberating voice which we all associate with her and which we so desperately miss now,” Medalie said. Medalie was speaking at Ms Van Vuuren’s memorial service, held in the University’s Chapel on 1 March 2011. Attended by various lecturers of the Department of Humanities, friends, family and students it was evident that Van Vuuren was a gentle, modest and humble person. “Her infectious warmth will live on,” said Prof. Sandra Klopper, Dean of Humanities.
Foto: Hickley Hamman

SRC Secretary General escapes dismissal ANKE OLIVIER
Katlego Malatji
A special parliamentary meeting was held last Thursday 3 March to vote for a motion of no condence against the Secretary General of the student representative council (SRC), Katlego Malatji. The complaint was brought against him by members of parliament who remained unnamed during proceedings. A summary of the complaint against the Secretary General (SG) include his misconduct in a parliamentary meeting and his failure to execute some mandatory administrative duties of SG such as the distribution of SRC minutes to parliament (according to section 48(d) of the parliamentary constitution). Members of parliament described Malatji’s behaviour as “hostile and big-headed.” According to them, it was clear that Malatji’s arrogance in parliament was beyond repair and unbecoming of the ofce of SG. “We view the SG’s behaviour as being … contradictory to the mandate of the SRC,” they concluded. In response to the allegations of misconduct Malatjie presented parliament with an ofcial apology. He also noted that according to section 24(1) of the constitution if any member of parliament does not accept his apology, they should le a complaint with the Dean of Students. He then proceeded to explain the technical difculties that hindered him from performing his duties, namely that the new Click-UP system made it impossible for him to make the minutes available. In a speech to parliament, Malatji stated that the week leading up to the parliamentary meeting had seen “political conniving of the
rst degree,” suggesting that members of parliament worked to sway other members to vote against him. Parliament then broke out into lively and vocal dynamic debate about allegations from Malatji’s side that in the week prior to the meeting, certain personalities lobbied members of parliament to vote in favour of the motion against him. According to Andrew Masombuke, Chairperson of Xayata and parliamentarian, such lobbying is part of the democratic processes among students and is part of politics. “I am aware of this and I have no problem with it,” said Masombuka. After various disputes among parliamentarians concerning quorum (the necessary amount of parliamentarians sitting in order to declare any motion valid) technicalities, voting to pass the motion started. Of the 43 parliamentarians that voted, 20 voted for the motion and 23 voted against it. Malatjie therefore remains in his ofce. . According to Mosumbuka, members of parliament did not vote out of principle but out of loyalty to a coalition between various organisations in parliament. “I am very disappointed,” said Mosumbuka, “If this is how parliament will be run, I don’t see a future.” Malatji said that the questions of conduct raised against him are not grounds for a motion of no condence. According to him, the motion against him is a personal attack by members of parliament with other political ambitions. “But none of this is in the best interest of the students. I do not wish to be pompous about the issue, but continue to work hand in hand with parliament,” said Malatji. Photos: JP Nathrass
AfriForum and SASCO: a war of words NINA VAN WYK Members of AfriForum Youth serving on the SRC (Student Representative Council) and student parliament of the University of Pretoria this week laid complaints against members of SASCO who serve on student parliament. According to a press release from AfriForum Youth, this apparently followed after members of SASCO displayed “violent” behaviour and after various attempts to disrupt student parliament meetings. SS Lukhozi, one of SASCO’s former leader gures, also allegedly insulted and threatened members of the SRC and student parliament in a series of emails. This followed after SASCO was refused the option of adding a discussion point to a student parliament meeting agenda. Apparently the agenda had already been approved by parliament. According to the parliamentary constitution, the agenda of

Music: food for thought NOLWAZI MNGADI We have all experienced that feeling at the end of a long day when your favourite song can lift your mood and have you dancing around your bedroom, putting your hands in the air and waving them around like you just don’t care. Scientists and ordinary people alike have known the positive effects of music on the human body for decades. Music not only affects the brain but the body as a whole. The effects, however, are not always good. Musicologist, Julius Portnoy, found that, among other things, music can affect mood, metabolic rates and even digestion. Classical, soothing music generally affects the human body in a positive way, while heavier music like rock or rap tends to have negative effects. Studies demonstrating this effect have been done on plants where soothing classical music was played to one group, and loud hard rock music played to another. The group to which the classical music was played grew quickly, whereas plants in the hard rock group died or had stunted growth. This is not to say that metal-heads or hard rockers will have stunted growth or will not develop correctly. Each human brain works differently, and just as with many things in life, one man’s Marilyn Manson is another man’s Beethoven. One of the biggest neurological breakthroughs with regards to music has been the power of music on the human memory. Baroque music and the music of Mozart have the ability to activate both the left and right hemispheres of the brain. The optimal beat pattern for this to be achieved is 60 beats per minute. When both sides of the brain are activated, the learning and retention of information is maximised. Bulgarian scientist, Dr George Lazanov, conducted a study where he hypothesised that, using baroque music, he could teach a foreign language to students in a fraction of the time it would normally take. Students who learned a foreign language while listening to baroque music were able to learn up to 1000 words and phrases in one day. His students had an average retention rate of 92%, and the foreign languages taught could be learned with 85-100% efciency. According to a Pennsylvania State University study, listening to Mozart’s Sonata for Two Piano’s in D Major before a test is one way that students can improve results. Music has also been used in the medical eld to help addicts. According to Portnoy, 30 minutes of classical music can be equivalent to a dose of Valium. Music, like drugs, affects chemicals, called neurotransmitters, in the brain. Unlike music however, drugs convince the brain to stop making the chemicals it needs. This is why, when one stops taking drugs, the brain stops functioning correctly and the user needs more drugs in order to function normally again. When music is used as a treatment for
drug addicts, it is able to stimulate the production of some of the chemicals which were destroyed by the use of drugs. This could limit cases where legal drugs are used to treat addiction to other drugs. Everyone is destined to spend approximately 1,2 years on hold. Most people with a cell phone have had to sit through torturous minutes of Mambo Number Five or something similar while waiting for their call to be answered. Phone companies play this music in order to reduce the amount of time you think you are waiting for your call to bea nswered. James Kellaris, a marketing professor at the University of Cincinnati says, “When shoppers are exposed to music in a store, sales resistance decreases.” The musical distraction therefore reduces customers’ willingness to make rational decisions and makes them less resistant to long waits on hold or seemingly endless queues in supermarkets.
While most people may think of musicians as narcissistic creatures, a study in the European Journal of Neuroscience found that teenagers and adults who are trained musicians are better able to read the emotional cues of others. Musicians are able to do this because they can process emotion in sound. They are therefore able to have more effective human interaction and relationships because their understanding of human emotions increases their emotional intelligence. Music is one of the few ways in which people all around the world are able to communicate and understand each other on a deeper emotional level. Whether a person lives in Japan, Norway or Kenya, the right piece of music could elicit a similar response in all of them. In the words of Victor Hugo, “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and cannot remain silent.”
Foto: Michelle Prins

: by the gram or the can serving. Following the popularity of cocaine-based medicines, which were used by young and old alike, Pemberton initially sold Coca-Cola as a remedial tonic and the caffeine-cocaine cocktail proved to be very popular because of its euphoric and energizing effects. The Coca-Cola Company was forced to remove cocaine from their formula in 1903 when the dangers of cocaine were fully established. Common side-effects of cocaine abuse include paranoia, depression, insomnia and severe physical addiction. Although Coca-Cola does not contain cocaine today, coca leaves are still used in its production process. The Coca-Cola Company buys coca leaves, which give Coke its distinctive avour, from the Stephan Company in New Jersey. The Stephan Company is the only manufacturing plant authorised by the Federal Government of the United States of America to import coca plants for the extraction of cocaine. The cocaine is sold to pharmaceutical companies for medical purposes and the cocaine-free coca leaves are sold to CocaCola. Both Coca-Cola and cocaine have a huge impact on South Africans today. Studies conducted by the United Nations World Report 2010 and the CocaCola Company, show that South Africa is currently recognised as one of the world’s top ten consumers of both Coca-Cola and cocaine. Coca-Cola became available in South Africa in 1928 and according to the Coca-Cola Company, South Africans consume about 10 billion Cokes annually. The report also found that cocaine was introduced to South Africa in 1992 and that South Africa currently has one of the highest rates of cocaine abuse in the world. The harmful effects of both Coca-Cola and cocaine are no secret. Contrary to their initial use in medicine, Coke (both kinds) is not regarded as healthy or nutritious today and the war against drug abuse is on every government agenda in the world.
CHANÈ MACKAY The notoriously debated secret formula to CocaCola, one of the world’s most recognised and popular soft drinks, has recently been uncovered. A closer look at the origins of Coca-Cola revealed some interesting links between the world’s favourite drink and one of its original ingredients: cocaine. The history of Coke (by the can and by the gram) began in the foothills of South America, where the Spanish conquistadors discovered the energizing effects of the coca plant – from which the now illegal drug, cocaine, is produced. Cocaine, as it is known today, was rst isolated in a white powder form in 1855. It soon became a key ingredient in various 19th century remedies and tonics, used to treat ailmentssuch as headaches, toothache, depression, fatigue, impotence and even common colds. At the time, narcotics were easily obtainable and used without much restriction. Queen Victoria, Sigmund Freud and Thomas Edison, were among the rst to endorse the “wonders” of cocaine. Freud especially was pro-cocaine and encouraged doctors to prescribe elixirs containing cocaine to combat anxiety and depression. Unfortunately for the father of modern psychology, some patients developed psychosis from cocaine abuse. Thirty years after cocaine was rst synthesised, an American pharmacist, John Pemberton, developed Pemberton’s French Wine Coca, a fortied wine made out of a mixture of cocaine rich coca plant leaves, Bordeaux, caffeine and kola nut extract for avouring. In May 1886, Pemberton replaced the alcohol in his French Wine Coca with sugar syrup, and thus, Coca-Cola was born (in a three legged brass kettle in Pemberton’s back yard). Coca-Cola concentrate mixed with soda water was initially sold as a health tonic in Jacob’s Pharmacy, Atlanta. The original Coca-Cola formula contained about nine milligrams of pure cocaine per

Sheril Kirshenbaum, skrywer van “The Science of Kissing: What Our Lips Are Telling Us,” sê dat gemiddeld 59% van mans en 66% van vrouens `n verhouding summier sal beëindig as gevolg van `n slegte soen. Foto: Michelle Prins

RAMfest rolls around again KIRSTI BUICK So, it’s approximately 108 hours until RAMfest Joburg bombards us with its awesomeness yet again. And Perdeby has decided that we just can’t wait that long, so we thought it would be a good idea to catch up with some of the local acts that will be gracing the stage with their presence, to give us a taste of what is to come. Also, it seemed like a productive way to pass the time until then.
Desmond & the Tutus PH Fat What do you think of this year’s RAMfest line-up? Is there anyone you think has been left out? I think it’s ippin’ cool. But I’ll always think that someone has been left out.‘Cause my favourite acts are always changing. It would make no sense for anyone to bring out the acts that I like, though. Where do you think RAMfest got its name? Same place everything gets its name from. “Famous Face” Mbete decided on it. Do you have any plans to play in Pretoria this year? Denitely. We have our album launch there the week after RAMfest Cape Town at Hotbox Studios. We’re playing Joburg on the Saturday night for RAMfest there. I wanna [sic] hustle to play up there as much as possible. If you met Justin Bieber, what would you say to him? In reality, if I was to meet him I would probably just be polite and move on. Which act are you most looking forward to at RAMfest 2011? Probably Mr Sakitumi.
WIN WITH PERDEBY!
Bittereinder Where do you think RAMfest got its name? From the brains of the guys who came up with the festival. The name just rammed itself right in there. Do you have any plans to play in Pretoria this year? We’re playing Park Acoustics at the Botanical Gardens on 27 March. If you met Justin Bieber, what would you say to him? Cut your hair, boet. Which act are you most looking forward to at RAMfest 2011? Tumi Molekane. Will Tumi and Jack Parow feature in your show for the song “A Tale of Three Cities?” Perhaps. What’s the story behind the name “Bittereinder”? It means an end to bitterness. Plus it refers to the battle between English and Afrikaans in our lives, and how Afrikaans won in the forming of this band.
You and a friend could be going to RAMfest, on us! We have three sets of double tickets to give away – because that’s how much we love you. To enter, simply go to our Facebook fan page (www.facebook.com/perdeby), click “Like”, and write on the wall telling us why we should give a pair of tickets to you. The competition ends at 1:00pm on Wednesday, 9 March, so do it now!
You are no strangers to RAMfest. What lessons have you learnt from previous performances? Well, after last year’s 36-hour drive back from RAMfest, we learned that Volvo isn’t as reliable as people think. Crafty Swedes. Do you think Desmond Tutu would like your music? Probably not, but apparently he is an awesome guy so he would never say anything bad about us … Well, not to our faces, at least. What do you think of this year’s RAMfest line-up? Is there anyone you think has been left out? Awesome line up. RAMfest is the most fun SA festival, hands down. Bummer that Eat This Horse isn’t playing, though … They did break up in 2007, so I guess that’s the reason. Where do you think RAMfest got its name? It was probably a toss-up between CRAMfest, SLAMfest and RAMfest. I guess they chose the shortest one. Do you have any plans to play in Pretoria this year? Big time! We already played Hotbox Studios in January but we’ll totally play more Pretoria shows during the year. It’s our home town, yo! If you met Justin Bieber, what would you say to him? “Can I please have some money? I just need it to buy petrol to get home. I live in Bronkhorstspruit, my girlfriend is in the car and she has the u and she is pregnant. Please, I just need 60 bucks to buy petrol and some bread. Please? No? Okay then, any small change?” Photos provided (PH Fat and Bittereinder) and Facebook (Desmond & the Tutus)
Hier is Perdeby se gunsteling SuidAfrikaanse mode-blogs.
Daar is nog plek vir verbetering as dit by hierdie blog kom, maar Perdeby dink die evolusie daarvan is denitief een om dop te hou. www.fakesartorialist.com “I’m fake, I’m hip and I know it.”

Kaartjies (wat parkering insluit) is by Computicket beskikbaar. TuksCricket push boundaries
LAURA SCHLEBUSCH Cricket World Cup fever has struck campus and South Africa. After the outstanding performance by former Assupol Tuks1 player AB De Villiers in the Proteas’ victory over the West Indies, Perdeby decided to catch up with some of the men involved in coaching, captaining and playing for Assupol Tuks1. Tuks is renowed for its excellent sporting facilities and its competent coaching staff. This holds true for TuksCricket which has appointed Pierre de Bruyn as its new Technical Director. Head Coach Anton Roux says de Bruyn (who played over 100 First Class matches) has brought fresh ideas and a professional approach to TuksCricket: “From the outset he was determined to put together a strong squad that would win the Premier League and … dominate Northerns Cricket.” With a
foundation consisting of values such as honesty, trust, respect and discipline being instilled by de Bruyn, TuksCricket has been able to start the 2010/2011 season on a successful note. Assupol Tuks1’s captain and all-rounder, Maurice Aronstam, hopes to win the Premier League in order to qualify for the National Club Championships which will take place in September. One of the team’s goals for the season became a reality when they won the Knock-Out Cup. Their xture against Christian Brothers College Old Boys (CBCOB) on 16 March is set to be a hard-fought contest of skills as CBCOB are considered to be Assupol Tuks 1’s toughest rival. As captain, Aronstam places great emphasis on his role as a player in the team. He says leading Assupol Tuks 1 hasn’t been a major test of his leadership abilities as yet because: “Being a good captain is not how
Sportgids
you lead a winning team it is how you lead a struggling team.” While there is a major psychological element to being a successful cricketer, Aronstam has overcome it through a combination of experience and helping younger cricketers with their own mental preparation before a big game. Aronstam feels fortunate to have access to the facilities at Assupol Tuks which are of international standards. Tuks has been the training ground of choice for the Proteas and has played host to the Cricket South Africa National Academy, South Australian Redbacks and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Aronstam also points out that aside from the obvious perks to playing for a club with such good coaching and facilities is the fact that selectors always have their eye on Assupol Tuks1 players – which is how AB De Villiers got noticed. Another former Assupol Tuks1 player is
Titans captain Jacques Rudolph. Although the demands of international and provincial cricket limited the number of matches he played for Tuks, Rudolph remembers the club fondly: “It is a privilege to be associated with Tuks as their sporting facility is of a world class standard.” Having graced cricket pitches around the world for the Proteas and then at county cricket club Yorkshire, Rudolph has – at the very least – an idea of what it takes to make it as a cricketer. While luck, talent and access to quality coaching all play their part, he believes that having a mentor is important. Rudolph’s personal goal for the year is to make it back into the Proteas squad. Some of you may remember Tuks student Christo Coetzer who became the rst person to unicycle around Mauritius in 2010. Well he is at it again and Perdeby was lucky enough to nd out about his next adventure: the One Wheel, One People, One Jamaica project. This year, Coetzer is planning on becoming the rst person to unicycle around Jamaica. Coetzer will start his journey on 28 March 2011 when he departs from the Bob Marley Museum at 56 Hope Road, Kingston. While the Caribbean Island’s coastline is 1022km long, Coetzer will cycle an approximate distance of 1200 km. Coetzer will attempt to complete this journey in 20 days which means he will have to cover 60 km on his unicycle a day. This is a new challenge for him as he only cycled an average of 34km a day during his journey around Mauritius.
Coetzer says that his love for Bob Marley and a long standing desire to visit the island helped him pick Jamaica for his adventure. He adds that he strongly believes in Marley’s motto: “I am a child of life” and feels that it describes him perfectly. Coetzer will be making a DVD to document his journey around the beautiful island. Afterwards, he will be writing a book about his experience which he hopes will inspire other people. Coetzer wants to make people aware of the power that lies in their dreams and believes that, “With the courage to follow a dream one can inspire others to do the same.” All the funding and equipment required for the project has been provided and Coetzer and his team are busy with the nal preparations. Perdeby wishes Coetzer luck in his exciting journey and will bring you the full story upon his return. Photo provided

The Big Brag bash CHARLOTTE KEURIS On Thursday night hundreds of students took part in the University’s annual Big Brag. For the sixth year in a row all the residences and day houses gathered in the square to see who has the most spirit. This year Klaradyn and Sonop only managed to come in third place, while Lilium and Taaibos took second. The winners of this year’s Big Brag, with an overwhelming 71% of the votes, was Vividus mans and Magrietjie. The judges were looking for the participants with the most enthusiasm and crowd appeal this year. A total of 14 teams and their mascots participated in this year’s Big Brag. Participants
were also judged on their creativity, use of time and their overall performances during the night. After the judging had been completed bands such as Saarkie, D-siblime and Zinkplaat entertained the crowds. DJ Euphonik also made an appearance and held a battle of the DJ’s on stage. Other festivities of the night included screaming competitions and the announcement of the top jock of Tuks.
