Serrie: the road to nals BEYERS DE VOS On the nights of 12 and 13 April, this year’s Serrie prelims kicked-off one of the busiest parts of the res calendar. The much anticipated event was, by all standards, a successful one, with most residences performing as well as was expected. Jasmyn, Erika, Asterhof, Magrietjie, Curlitzia, Sonop, Boekenhout, Vividus Men, Olienhout and Olympus made the nal cut and will be performing in the nals. JC de Jager, a member of STUKU’s general committee and a Serrie judge, said that he found the performances impressive. “Every residence has a different idea of what Serrie is and the way the format changes every year is impressive,” he commented. Duncan Platt, a member of the SRC, called the event “very good”, specically noting the fun atmosphere and the fact that, for the most part, the programme managed to nish ahead of schedule. Danelle Kritzinger, a member of the STUKU executive committee responsible for Serrie, called the night “awesome” and said that this year Serrie was “taken to a whole new level.” The only sour note of the evening came courtesy of Kollege, who was asked to leave certain venues after their performance was deemed too lewd to continue.

This was the rst year that STUKU introduced a website (www.stuku.co.za), which provided people with an electronic schedule for the night, accessible via their cell phones, and the opportunity to comment on the performances they saw. The website, which went live the day of the ladies prelims, was the brainchild of Platt, who holds the service provider’s portfolio on the SRC, under which STUKU falls. He told Perdeby that he had the idea after it became difcult in previous years to get hold of a programme. The results were also made available via the website. According to Kritzinger the website will be used for the nals and will become a common feature of the Serrie experience in years to come. Most people who commented via the website gave positive feedback and seemed to at least agree that Magrietjie, Erika, Vividus Men and Boekenhout would make the nal. The nal results conrmed this. Concerns that there were irregularities with the results, which were not calculated by STUKU but by an external auditor, arose early on Friday morning (15 April), but Perdeby can conrm the authenticity of the results, which were vouched for by both the SRC and the external auditor. The nals will be held on Thursday 21 April. Tickets are on sale at Tukkiewerf from R15 per person.

Letter to the editor ANONYMOUS INVIGILATOR Invigilation is surely done with passion despite the fact that students often refer to us as drill sergeants of the SANDF or bouncers from the old age home. Some even refer to it as a paid hobby but it hardly pays the transport cost let alone to afford a sandwich or a cold drink. This surely proofs [sic] that we invigilate for the love of the future generation. Before students are allowed to enter a venue invigilators must rst search the venue for illegal notes and possible dangerous items. We also clean the venue so that students don’t need to ght their way through bottles, papers, bags and what I recently had to remove….a used condom. Do students come to university to earn a degree or to catch a baby or some STD? [sic] We are often confronted by students who are disgruntled if we insist that you present your student

Let’s talk about rock and roll. Actually, no. Let’s start with the something far more mundane and far less appreciable. Everything in life is peppered with little annoyances. You can’t escape them really. Whether it be the turnstiles which refuse to function, or the rude receptionist at the campus clinic (who seems to think decorum is more important than the dying friend you’re holding in your arms) or the card machine at Fego which is always (and I mean always) ofine whenever I want to pay with a card, or ClickUP (just in general) or the printers in the library which seem to be designed to steal credits from you or the ATMs on campus which work according to their own magical timetable, all of us have to cope with certain tiny nuisances each day. But then there’s a day (a day we’ve all had) where all of those things happen at once, transforming into a series of unexplained, comical mishaps, the likes of which are usually only seen in bad Katherine Heigl or Anne Hathaway movies (not that any of them are ever good really). I had a day like this last week. I was not happy. I probably didn’t make the Perdeby ofce a fun place to work that day. There were tantrums and screaming and general impatience with everything and everyone. But then (drum roll please): rock and roll. I switched the radio on (technically it was a laptop, but for the sense of nostalgia I’m going to call it a radio) and Johnny Cash came crooning from the speakers, with his deep, swaggering voice and made me feel so much better. It’s kind of amazing, the power of music: the ability it has to capture and dene exactly how you are feeling, the way it can connect random moments in your life

and give them some kind of meaning. Of course, it’s a completely false, pseudo-poetic sense of meaning. But it works. It takes the prosaic and for a brief moment turns it sad, sexy, euphoric or angry. All music can do it, but rock and roll does it best. Probably because it comes attached to a lifestyle (a lifestyle which has been dangersously romanticised) that promises to do exactly what the music does. Which is why it is so easy to see why sex, drugs and rock and roll go so well together. They all have the same kind of power. Other things can do that too, of course. Books, movies, television. And hopefully, once a week, we manage to convey some of that in this paper. Some sense of community, some insight into your lifestyles and your interests. We certainly did this week. We have articles on nudists, on the new proposed legislation to increase the legal drinking age, as well as an interview with rock phenomenon aKING. Sex, drugs and rock and roll. Of course, sometimes life is about the prosaic and the serious, so we take a look at Tuks’ Varsity Cup defeat and the recent uproar caused by Afriforum. Then, do yourself a favour and read the letter to the editor published below. It is a rare insight into the secret lives of invigilators and certainly conrms all my own suspicions about these enigmatic gures. This anonymous invigilator has some advice for all of you who dress like strippers and swear like sailors and can’t afford Dettol. Shame on all of you. We’ll be back after the holidays with a special election edition. Until then, as “anonymous invigilator” recommends, don’t “catch a baby”.

card before entering the exam hall, but this common procedure is to ensure that the correct person writes the exam. Unbelievable as it sounds, some students actually pay other people to write exams on their behalf, especially if that student has had a late night at the square. When caught out, and found guilty, this student will not be able to write any exam at TUKS for some time. Why should students sit directly behind each other with a space of one arm’s length between them? This is because some students turn into chameleons once the exam starts. A student’s neck would suddenly be stiff and needs to stretch closer to the fellow student’s exam paper to enable the chameleon eyes to stare at its prey (the other student’s answer sheet). [sic] Yes we do walk up and down the hall to look for all those illegal notes written on rulers, legs, clothes, hats, shoes or tissues (left as so-called rubbish on the oor). After a while one cannot help but notice the slogans on T-shirts ranging from religious to utterly disgusting. Call me a prude but these disgusting T-shirts leave a lasting ‘bad’ impression.

Being moderately older than the average student probably precludes me from judging fashion but somehow some girls hardly ever dress. We all appreciate a beautiful body including curves but please leave something for the imagination. The way some girls dress will soon leave strip clubs out of business. Why pay if you can get it for free at TUKS? If you have to show off your G-string…at least wear a clean one. I have recently come to the conclusion that most students are related to that Afrikaans rapper….what’s his name again? Not related? Then how is it you speak alike? “P^$s my F^%^n ou dis mos f*%$#n k%$%!” [sic] I suppose the foul language also explains the state of some of the student’s hygiene. Where some students can be heard from a mile away others can be smelled. But then I realise that booze is expensive and when it comes to a choice between Klippies and Dettol chances are that Klippies will kill more than just 99% germs [sic] from inside. As parents of current, former or future students we know how stressful an exam can be and how frightening we might look, but all of us care about you.

The Autumn season of graduations opened almost three weeks ago. It is an exciting time for those who worked hard with their eyes focused on the goal. As I sit on the stage, watching the excitement of friends and relatives, listening to ululations, praise-singing and other noises made by supporters, I cannot help but think that the great moment people had been waiting for has arrived. For many, the celebrations carry on until the early hours of the following day while for some, it is only a passing moment in a schedule that is dominated by the demands of their next level of study. I have to acknowledge that faculty staff who attend graduation ceremonies always seem elated to see the fruits of their labour being appreciated in that manner. As Dean of Students, I sit there thinking: “well done! It was not so long ago that I welcomed this lot as rst years. Now I have to shake their hands as I welcome them to the alumnus status and wish them ‘hamba kahle’ in their next level of development.” I also wonder what they are taking along as they leave the University of Pretoria. Academics could argue as I did when I was still lecturing, that they have given them everything they were supposed to know and that the rest, for example, application in real life or

further research, is in the hands of individuals. But that is a given. People come to university to acquire knowledge, expand the knowledge they have or learn the skill of generating more knowledge. This happens primarily in a classroom context. However, learning takes place everywhere and best practice in other contexts shows that learning outside the classroom is deemed more valuable for it is integrated with life experiences. It happens in the Student Centre during lunch breaks, on the lawn between the Aula and Student Affairs building, in the cafeteria and on the grounds at Groenkloof where some girls play netball, in our residences, on the sports elds and in all the structures to which our students are afliated. This is what makes a “well rounded” person. I trust that those who leave the university at the end of their studies have a thing or two outside class to which they can ascribe their development. The university has offered opportunities for involvement in student governance structures, service providers, faculty and day houses, mentorship programme, residence life, sport, societies and community engagement. There are also spaces where sometimes robust but healthy debates take place. We need to ask which of these has helped individuals become well-rounded persons? Are they able, besides analysing a chapter in a book or solving a

mathematical problem or producing a very sophisticated painting or identifying which gene is responsible for which hereditary disease or being able to write an anti-virus computer programme, to relate to fellow human beings in a healthy, civil manner? Are they able to take appropriate decisions in different situations? Will they be able to roll up their sleeves and work with their hands in a situation that calls for that? Are they the kind of graduates who will remember to comb their hair, cut their nails, polish their shoes or sing the national anthem with a lot of pride? I suppose these questions should also be asked about the alumni who are still in the making. They stand a good chance of becoming even better people when they leave this place. I was asked by some of the readers, including the Chief Editor of this paper, to continue with the discussion of our role in Hateld. Owing to the fact that graduations are currently taking place, I thought that questions that bother me around this time of the year should be prioritised. I will return to Hateld in the next issue. Meanwhile, I wish you all a safe and pleasant Easter break. Best wishes Prof McGlory Speckman Dean of Students

Res Update

Pssst... would like to thank both the residences that actually made the effort to entertain at Serrie this year and the residences that should’ve just stayed in bed that evening for boring us to death. One of the rst things Pssst... noticed was that the ladies are really taking the whole sexy thing a little too far this year. We’re looking at you, Magrietjie. The Katjie ladies went for a “Little Red Riding Hood” theme this year and Pssst... must admit that some of them really did look lost. If you are going to give a so-so performance make sure you do it with condence, ladies. Pssst... would like to ask someone, anyone, from the Groenkloof campus to please educate Kiaat. Pssst... gets that your theme was centred around toxic substances and that toxic substances can kill, but there was no need to die on stage. Pssst... thinks Kiaat’s band should have stuck to hitting drums because they really looked like they were in pain while doing their gumboot dance. You might’ve been doing your fellow Kiaat Serrie members a favour by dancing in front, but you denitely weren’t doing the audience a favour at all. But Pssst...wasn’t too sure about doing upside down splits in short tights. The doctors also couldn’t wait to show off their glow in the dark jocks. There is a reason why it’s only done by Mopanie, guys. OP tried to add some colour to Serrie with their owery hippie performance. OP tried. No, really, they did. Pssst... would like to commend them for trying to be different. It seems the guys from Taaibos are nally tired of sucking and they actually lifted a nger in effort and tried to live up to the high standards of Serrie, instead of dropping them like they’ve always done. Taaibos has clearly made an impression on Kollege. The “wife beaters” and their tasteless 18 LSN performance should have just stayed in Kollege on the evening of Serrie to watch the paint dry on their rocks. But then Pssst... did think that some of Kollege’s Serrie members were underage themselves. By sommige koshuise was Kollege half-pad deur hulle opvoering gestop en sommige van hulle liedjies was verban. Pssst... is surprised at how Kollege got a band to make their stupidity sound musical. It seems the Mopanie guys are losing their manners this year. Mopanie made Madelief’s pyramid tumble. If you are not in this week’s Pssst... then there was either not enough space or Pssst... didn’t want to waste space. See you at the nals (or at your pity parties). And remember to name and shame them (or yourself) at pssst@perdeby.co.za. Over and out.

Photo: Mpho Tsauri

Rag partners Boekenhout and Katjiepiering (Bokatti) have stepped up to help those in need with their Save a Sole initiative. The idea is to collect old school shoes from around Pretoria and donate them to the less privileged. According to Roger Player, Boekenhout Rag HK, they “wanted to do something very different from just donating clothes. When you think of school shoes, you are always reminded of your rst day at school. It is exciting to be part of that memory.” The initiative was launched in 2010 and will run for four years. Each year will have a different objective. “This year’s objective was to create awareness of the project,” says Player. Bokatti got Springbok rugby player Pierre Spies to assist with the campaign and a video of the programme is available on YouTube (www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kn9eEZxTr4). “All of us have to give to those in need so it’s wonderful to make a difference and to help out where we can,” said Spies. “Well done to the students who came up with this.” Even though this is the only year Boekenhout and Katjiepiering will be Rag partners, the residences have decided to continue the project together and foster a relationship between them. Collection points for old shoes have been placed around schools in Pretoria and one has been placed in the Rag ofce on campus. Once collected, the shoes will then be given to SA

Care to make sure they are organised and distributed properly. Player encourages anybody who has a pair of school shoes that they are not using (seeing that you are no longer in school) to donate to the cause. Illustration: Hanro Spangenberg

UP and SAPS tackle crime KOKETSO DLONGOLO AND ANKE OLIVIER

On 6 April, the University of Pretoria (UP) received an award from the South African Police Service (SAPS) in recognition of its committed partnership with the Brooklyn police. Station Commander, Brigadier Wiese, honoured the university with a certicate that he handed over to UP Rector, Professor Niek Grové. The university also awarded the Brooklyn police with a certicate in recognition and acknowledgement of the professional services rendered by SAPS. The awards were in recognition of the combined efforts of the police, UP and the Hateld community in combating crime in and around Hateld. Brigadier Wiese said that the main objectives of the partnership are to improve service delivery, jointly ensure crime reduction and improve the rate of crime detection in Hateld. He highlighted that the 2010 Fifa World Cup was successful because the university and the Brooklyn police worked well together to ensure the safety of the Spanish team (the team resided in one of the university residences) as well as the safety of the general public. He said, “It is the commitment and dedication of everybody that ensured a safe World Cup.” In agreement, Professor Grové said, “You

Colin Fouché, head of security at UP, speaking at a press conference honouring the UP-SAPS relationship

cannot accomplish anything in life on your own … this is what this project is about. The university needs the support of the community and the police.” In closing, Mr Colin Fouché, Director of the Department of Security services at UP, declared that the conference marked the beginning of what will become a lasting legacy. He said, “It is a great honour and privilege to be associated with you [the Brooklyn police].” The Department of Security at UP in partnership with SAPS has made more than three major arrests in and around UP in the past month. One of these was the apprehension of Mr Casper Leach who was arrested for the theft of two bicycles on UP’s South campus, one of which was worth an estimated R15 000. He then sold the stolen bicycle to a Nigerian man for R500. Bicycle theft has been an ongoing problem on campus. Leach has also been accused of stealing a car radio, takkies and a ash drive out of a car. Police found several knives, a screwdriver, medication and a diary in his possession. In his diary Leach wrote: “I was on LC again today. I was out on my mission, but as usual I had to wait for the mission to come to me. I aimed for 300, but only got 200.” According to UP security, reports of cell phone theft at the LC de Villiers cricket clubhouse came to an end after Leach’s arrest. He has been sentenced to one year imprisonment.

NINA VAN WYK On 13 April, Charl Oberholzer, National Under Chairperson of AfriForum Youth and President of the SRC at the University of Pretoria (UP), was announced as the new chairperson for AfriForum Youth. This followed after the former chairperson, Ernst Roets, was appointed as acting deputy chairperson of AfriForum.

Oberholzer has been active in AfriForum Youth’s leadership for years. Roets said that he relinquished his duties to Oberholzer with an easy heart, because he has the fullest confidence in Oberholzer’s leadership abilities. “In his role as president of UP’s SRC he (Oberholzer) has already made a big impact and proved himself as someone who is willing to act fearlessly when it comes to the protection of students’ rights.” Roets added that his years working as national chairperson of AfriForum Youth were the best of his life. He said that the experience and the knowledge that he gained, as well as the friends he made he would not exchange for anything. With his new position at AfriForum, Roets will still be involved in AfriForum Youth as advisor and supporter. Oberholzer said that he will continue with his battle to free young people from affirmative action as well as his campaigns to keep mother tongue education available. “To be the chairperson of the fastest growing youth movement is a great honour and an opportunity to make the already marginalised youth’s voices count.” Photo: up.ac.za

CANSA Shavathon rocks campus

Duncan Platt

DAVID CROSS Hateld campus served as host to one of ve CANSA Shavathons which took place on 5 April. Students were sprayed and shaved, as volunteers and sponsors worked to ensure that a sum of R21 900 was raised in support of CANSA. 2011 is the rst year in which a CANSA Shavathon has taken place on all ve campuses of the University of Pretoria. Anneke Bothma, one of the event coordinators, said, “It is important to show

that Tuks is actively involved in community fundraisers, and if I could just add to that, this is the rst time that we are going live on all campuses.” For a R50 donation students could have their hair shaved or sprayed in any colour of their choice. Members of the SRC, as well as the Tuks Rag Queen, Petrone Snyman, were some of the student volunteers who teamed up with sponsors (Pie City, Big Al’s, Piazza Foods and Coffee Buzz) to deliver the fundraiser in support of CANSA.

Duncan Platt, a member of the SRC and possessor of the service providers and technology portfolios, said, “ It is important to spread awareness of cancer, as it affects society to a magnitude of which many of us remain completely oblivious.” Event coordinators Anneke Bothma and Mia Badenhorst were immensely satised with the results of the fundraiser and hope to see the awareness, participation and overall recognition of the CANSA Shavathon increase not only on a national, but a global, scale.

SRC involved in internal struggle THEUNS VAN RHYN The SRC was involved in a joint appeals tribunal on Friday 8 April where the gay and lesbian society, Up and Out, and the Black Lawyers Association (BLA) appealed to re-register their societies for 2011. Up and Out was prevented from reregistering for 2011 because they failed to le a management report with the SRC last year. Anné Thiart, who holds the SRC societies portfolio, said there had been a “mix-up” between this and last year. “This was because of the gap left when the TSC (Temporary Student Council) changed back to the SRC.” She explained that there had been a TSC instead of an SRC because due to the violent protests at the voting points on campus in 2009 a SRC could not be chosen for 2010. Up and Out was plagued by internal problems last year when the former executive committee chairperson stole money out of the society’s account. Current Executive Chairperson of Up and Out, Jade Williams, said there had been a “moral breakdown” in the

“We only found out about the stolen money in September. Then everything just fell apart.” management of the society. “We only found out about the stolen money in September. Then everything just fell apart.” He explained that there had been two interim chairpersons before he took the position. “I became chairperson only to realise that we hadn’t led a management report and that we aren’t registered.” The three constitutional tribunal judges that made up the panel were Johnathan Leibbrandt, Kule Smit (both fourth-

year LLB students) and Khomotso Moshikaro (a third-year LLB student). There were apparently 20 other societies that also neglected to hand in their management reports, but only Up and Out and the BLA launched appeals. Smit said that according to the Constitution of Student Governance, they had to consider all the unregistered societies because otherwise “it wouldn’t be fair.” According to Moshikaro the hearing was mainly inquisitorial. “We just got the story from all sides.” Leibbrandt explained that they considered various documents when hearing the case. “We looked at the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, the Bill of Rights, the Student Bill of Rights and the Constitution of Student Governance. We considered freedom of movement, just administrative action, access to information and the limitations of both constitutions.” It was ruled that unregistered societies would be given a chance to register as new societies between 18 April and 9 May. Smit made it clear that they were able to hear any internal matter and that it did not have to come through the SRC.

alkohol dieselfde doel verrig as Vanish.

Volgens die INF (International Naturists Federation) is nudisme “a lifestyle in harmony with nature, expressed through social nudity, and characterised by self-respect of people with different opinions and of the environment”. Albei vind plaas in relatiewe

privaatheid, byvoorbeeld by die huis. Sosiale nudisme vind gewoonlik plaas in `n gemeenskap van nudiste. Klere is gewoonlik opsioneel by hierdie plekke, behalwe by die swembaddens en saunas.

Wel, so iets.

Student life might run dry Government to raise legal drinking age CHANÈ MACKAY To drink or not to drink? The choice may no longer be yours, as government recently proposed new laws which will prohibit anyone under the age of 21 from purchasing or consuming alcohol. What exactly does the proposed legislation involve? Could it curb underage drinking and how would it affect drinkers who are over 21? The proposed legislation includes plans to increase the minimum age at which alcohol may be purchased or consumed from 18 to 21 and to establish harsher sentencing for public intoxication and drunk driving, which is already a risky endeavour considering the current increased police presence. Familiar phrases like: “Real men don’t drink pink drinks Dave” or “Met eish ja!” may disappear from our cultural vocabulary as the legislation would limit the broadcasting, location and content of liquor advertisements. Bathabile Dlamini, Minister of Social Development, said that the government’s plans to intensify the war against alcohol and drug abuse, as well as the war against crime, will be aided by the proposed new laws. Last month, a team of experts presented a five-year plan for dealing with substance abuse to government. According to Dlamini, a significant budget would be allocated to the implementation of this plan. The hospitality and advertising industries contribute greatly to the South African economy. Still, President Jacob Zuma criticised the alcohol industry, stating that we cannot ignore the impact of adverts “that glorify alcohol as providing the ultimate enjoyment and fancy lifestyle.” President Zuma also confirmed that government is considering restrictions on the hours and days on which alcohol could be sold and on the number and location of liquor outlets.

Several studies have shown that alcohol and drug abuse amongst South Africans is linked to many criminal offences and other harmful behaviours. A government crackdown on substance abuse has been anticipated for some time. Yet it has been argued that the proposed laws will not significantly decrease alcohol abuse in young adults or improve the crime rate. In fact, it has been argued that prohibiting alcohol consumption for people under the age of 21 may simply increase underground liquor sales and underage drinking. This in turn would add to the burden

on the police. Minette van Niekerk, a fourth-year medical student, points out that “by the age of 18, a person is considered to be responsible enough to drive, pilot a plane, make debt, have sex, get married, raise children and even vote.” Van Niekerk question how 18-year-olds can be considered mature enough to do all this and not be allowed to drink legally. Despite harsh words from government, local bar owners and alcohol companies alike are in favour of responsible drinking, though they advocate stricter enforcement and compliance with existing legislation rather than further restrictions. SAB District Manager, Sizwe Mkhasibe, says: “We are proud of the products that we produce and strongly believe that these should be consumed responsibly by adults.” Managing Director of Aandklas, Marcus Oosthuizen, feels that Aandklas, like most restaurants, pubs and clubs in student areas, would simply not survive the new legislation because their trade relies mostly on 18 to 25-year-olds. He also said, “Aandklas agrees that there is a social problem with alcohol, but increasing the legal age for alcohol consumption to 21 is not the solution.” Oosthuizen commented on the fact that the new legislation would deprive students and young adults of the personal choice to drink or not. He added that the unique culture and traditions of student towns like Stellenbosch and Potchefstroom would cease to exist. Though the debate surrounding the new drinking laws continues, it should perhaps focus on effective strategies to combat underage drinking and substance abuse. It should concentrate on education, the promotion of stable family environments and healthier alternatives for bored youths, such as large-scale sports and other recreational programmes. aKING on rock `n roll, growing up and comfy pants

The review

The interview KIRSTI BUICK & LISA DE KLERK aKING’s new album, The Red Blooded Years, has been dubbed their “musical evolution”. Was it the addition of Thieve’s Andrew Davenport and keyboard, or Hunter Kennedy’s bowing out that brought on this musical metamorphosis? Perdeby was at the Pretoria leg of their album launch to nd out. What sets the new album apart from your previous ones and why is it considered to be your “musical evolution”? Well rstly, the most obvious thing is the fact that Andrew joined us on rhythm guitar and backing vocals after Hunter Kennedy left to do other projects. Also, we added a keyboard to the mix so that denitely made some kind of sonic change. aKING is constantly evolving anyway. Tell us more about the title? It [“The Red Blooded Years”] was the rst song we wrote and the actual song sets the mood for the album. As we carried on writing we realised that most of the tunes are sort of based around youth. The Red Blooded Years has been called your “coming-of-age” album. What’s the worst part of growing up? The worst part of growing up is being seen as old. In the eyes of most 18-year-olds we’re like 200. Favourite track on the new album? Laudo: I think I’ll know what it is in a couple of months when we sort of work through it again. We’re still too close to the actual process to know. Hennie: I think it’s also because we haven’t started playing it live so we’re not sick of it yet. So every song still has a special place.

Laudo: A song gets a new life when you play it live. It’s a different song entirely, actually. Now that Hunter has left, what is the writing process like? [It’s] a common misconception that Hunter wrote all the songs and that Hunter was the driving force behind the band. Laudo actually wrote most of the songs before Hunter had even joined the band on the rst album. We all denitely had a contribution lyrically and musically. What should aKING fans know about Andrew? They should know that the only thing that he ever puts on his steak is blue cheese sauce. What was the best part of working on the music video for “The Runaround” with Louis Minnaar? Louis Minnaar. The fact that he made it so easy. We’ve shot music videos for like two days straight and this took like 6 or 7 hours. We rocked up there at 8 in the morning and wrapped up at quarter past 4. Since the release of Dutch Courage in 2008 you’ve come out with two more albums, that’s three albums in less than four years. What’s the recipe for your ongoing success? It’s more productivity than success. We’re all pretty much like workaholics when it comes to the music. We don’t want real jobs. We really really really want to do this. As soon as you start feeling that you’re losing speed or altitude or whatever, it gets you red up to write more songs, write new albums, play more shows, that kind of thing. The longevity of albums is really not long. You have to keep on going and we’ve learnt our lesson that if you break your momentum it’s difcult to get back into your stride.

What kind of response have you received to The Red Blooded Years thus far? We’ve had a pretty positive response. Well, people wouldn’t say it to our faces if they didn’t like it. The only kind of half-negative thing would be that people are nding it a bit hard to get used to the keyboard, but I think that’s only people who don’t like keyboard. The rock reviewers say the ballads cause us to lose momentum on the album. But our most successful songs have been the ballads, like “You and I”. All good rock bands always have great ballads. It should be a journey instead of a monotonous ride. The launch of the album has seen you perform and promote it in various venues throughout the country. What is the one thing you always take with you on the road? Our instruments? Eye drops? We always bring our cameras. And we always try to bring comfortable pants. They make you feel at home. You gain and lose weight on tour as well, so they must be stretchy. What’s on the cards for aKING for the rest of the year? We have a bunch of friends who are producers, DJs and musicians and we’re going to basically supply them with the separates of our recordings and then they’re going to remix them. We’re very excited about that. They’re people that we sort of admire and look up to. They’ll play around with our tracks and we’ll see what comes out of it. That’ll kind of determine what direction we go productionwise. We’ll move along to a different kind of production – we’ve done the standard rock thing. Our song writing approach will always stay like that, but the production part of it might change.

NADINE LAGGAR The third album to come from aKING, The Red Blooded Years, contains all the iconic elements that fans have come to expect: Laudo Liebenberg’s gruff vocals, hard-hitting riffs and lyrics that will stalk your consciousness long after you hit the stop button. However, the thematic concept of the album, relating to the band’s youth, and the replacement of Hunter Kennedy with Andrew Davenport on guitar, have most denitely had an effect on aKING’s sound. The rst track, “Any Other Way”, sets the stage for the band’s regression back into their youth with an 80s-style keyboard intro. This causes momentary panic before the guitar riff kicks in and all is right in the world again. Despite this, there is an undercurrent of cynicism in The Red Blooded Years with tracks like “The Runaround” or most explicitly with “Cut-Throat-Tongue & Razor” which makes use of heavy guitar riffs and lyrics mixing sex and violence as only rock and roll can. On the ipside, there are a couple of tracks that come off as a bit at, such as “All in the Wind”. The 80s-style keyboard in this track walks a very ne line between artistic progression and being cheesy. aKING redeems themselves though, with tracks such as “Kick Me” and “Red Blooded Years” which contain the right ingredients to elicit that surge of emotion in a way that only aKING can. In its totality, The Red Blooded Years will not disappoint hardcore aKING fans but compared to Dutch Courage and Against All Odds it seems more like a precursor to a renewed sound than the nished product itself. Kombineer `n bietjie kulturele diversiteit, `n bietjie Johannesburgse

geur en net `n titseltjie Florence + The Machine.

SpazaShop Boyz Wie? We Shall Embrace Wie?

Hmmm. A Place Called Here And Now, opgeneem.

Dit lyk mooi by `n denim, sowel as mooi sykouse, soos Charné Oosthysen bewys

Nadine Wubbeling

UCT takes Varsity Cup SAMANTHA EVANS UCT ended their FNB Varsity Cup campaign victorious after defeating FNB Tuks in Pretoria on Monday 11 April. The visiting side, who has been in the nal twice before, was elated to nally take the cup home after losing to Maties the last two years. In the rst half UCT got off to a promising start. An inside pass to Gregg Mallet from Tim Whitehead presented Ikeys with the chance to put seven points on the board, giving them a lead in the rst two minutes. Tuks took full advantage of the string of penalties conceded by UCT to get back on top. Tuks y-half and captain, Wesley Dunlop, converted two of the penalties to bring the score to 7-6. Tuks’s rst and only try came from Jean du Plessis. Dunlop followed it up with a successful conversion, making the score 13-7 for Tuks. UCT made a number of mistakes which eventually cost them three points when Dunlop converted another penalty in the 36th minute. UCT then moved into the Tuks half and y-half Demetri Catrakilis scored three points for his team, making the score at half time 16-10 for Tuks. Tuks went into the second half with a slight lead but spent most of it playing a defensive

game and conceding penalties. Catrakilis scored a penalty in the 50th minute. He followed it up with another just ve minutes later after Warwick Tecklenberg was penalised at a tackle, bringing the score to 16-16. UCT hooker Matt Page scored a try and Catrakilis converted, putting UCT back in the lead. Tuks were then penalised at the scrum and Catrakilis converted again with just 10 minutes left on the clock. Tuks spent the nal ten minutes attacking the UCT line and was held up over the line on two occasions. UCT was penalised as Tuks gave it one last try but a knock-on signaled the end of the game. The nal score was 26-16 to the visiting side. Tuks captain Wesley Dunlop said that his team played outstanding rugby in the rst half and they produced a clinical performance, but they went into the second half defending and that was their downfall. He added that the Varsity Cup as a whole is a great platform for young players who are still studying but want to play rugby on a competitive level. The 2011 Miss Varsity Cup was crowned during half time and Nicole Greef from Tuks was crowned as the rst princess. This year’s second princess was Miss UJ, Chloe Geraghty, and the winner was Miss Pukke, Erena Stofberg. Foto: Keith Pyper

TuksRowers at USSA Sprints

MARI-LOUISE DE KOCK TuksRowing can hold their heads high as four of their rowers made it into the Blues and Grudges teams at the 2011 USSA Sprints. The USSA Blues and Grudges race is an exhibition race that takes place after the Regatta once a year where Tuks rowers David Hunt, Kate Johnstone, Carmen Lammerding and Imogen Mackie all qualied for the respective men’s and women’s teams. Hunt made it into the USSA men’s Blues Eight team fort he second time and Johnstone made it into the USSA Blues women’s team for the third year in a row. Lammerding and Mackie both secured a place in the USSA women’s Grudges team, Lammerding making the Grudges Double team and Mackie making the Grudges Four team. Hunt told Perdeby that “rowing for Tuks has given me the opportunity to train and race with many experienced athletes such as Beijing Olympian Shaun Keeling, double u/23 world silver medalists James Thompson and Matthew Brittain, as well as last year’s u/23 World Champions, Lawrence Brittain and John Smith.” Johnstone seconds this statement by

saying that she is very fortunate as a rower as many of the national athletes are based at Tuks and exposure to the training and mindsets of top class athletes has been a phenomenal experience. According to Lammerding, she has a very hectic university timetable and sometimes practises on weekends as her demanding timetable does not allow her to do so during the week. Although self-discipline and hard work are the key principles in these rowers’ training, in the end it is very rewarding: “I probably enjoy the feeling that all your hard work has paid off when you beat someone else in a race,” said Hunt. Not only does rowing have the visible end results, but the rowers also benet from the learning experience of pushing themselves physically and mentally. Mackie said: “No matter how hard the session is, friends will always make it better. You will always have fun doing a sport that is too amazing for words.” Although these rowers have made it into the Blues and Grudges teams they will continue rowing for Tuks. Photo: up.ac.za
