What is up with all the cool venues closing? Those of you who are new to all this won’t necessarily know what I’m talking about. But people from the old guard will know that Pretoria has lost some of its best live music
venues over the last couple of years. What I am talking about here is not the Square. I am not disputing that that little corner of sin lives on in continuous debauchery, hopefully for many years to come. But the Square cannot be the be all and end all of good party places in Pretoria (I know some of you will disagree with me, but give it a year and we’ll talk), and it seems all the other ones are disappearing. Speak to anyone who is a Pretorian, who has lived here for more than two years, and they will have the same complaint I do. In my head I trace it back to the loss of Zeplins. Zeplins was a kind of circus of rock and roll. A Mecca for every kind of stranger. It was one of a kind, and nothing since has even come close to recreating its magic. Then we had Hotbox Studios, a modern day secret garden, a hedonist heaven, an alternative cave of wonders. Hotbox had the best parties in town, for a while. They still have the occasional party there, little tributes to lost glory, but it’s hardly the same. Then, Tings and Times, the home of hippies and reggae, the resting place for the high and the happy, closed its doors. And while a version of Tings (bastardised, without the live music element, less cool, but still pleasant) lives on in the Eastern suburbs, it cannot compare to the original. Even Cheeky Monkey Lynwood, which was the reigning live music venue for a while, bit the dust. What survives, what we are left with, is a single awesome live music venue, Arcade Empire, and one or two not so great ones. So, what is a poor boy to do? Shuffle between Arcade Empire and Aandklas, with

the occasional foray into the Square proper? I have no problems with any of these places (everybody knows I practically live in Aandklas), but there was a time, a very short time, where most of the venues I mentioned were open at the same time. And this made Pretoria a great place to party. The choice of being able to rock out at Zeplins or chill out at Tings, or of seeing Yesterday’s Pupil at Hotbox on the same night as Tidal Waves are playing at Tings is what made it so cool. I fear (the horror!) that Pretoria might be losing its cool. Here is what I need: I need someone to open the next great Pretoria venue, a venue that someone will write about one day, with the same frustrated nostalgia that I am using now. A venue that you can stumble out of on a Friday night after watching your favourite band and say, “that is the greatest place on earth”. Until that happy day, we’ll have to make due with what we’ve got. In the meantime, read the Perdeby. Read out interview with Die Antwoord. As always, they were charmingly zef. Read all our reviews. Read the article and then go onto the website and read our preview of tonight’s Varity Cup game. Ag, read all of it, just to be safe. And then go party. Afriforum, UP meet in court Intervarsity news
DANIELLE PETTERSON Rhodes Rhodes University will soon be holding its sixth annual silent protest to highlight sexual violence in South Africa, according to their website. The protest, organised by the Dean of Students Office, will be held all day on 23 March. The protest has five different kinds of participation: silent women will be gagged all day with no food or water wearing t-shirts saying “sexual violence causes silence” in English or Xhosa. Rape victims will reportedly also take part, and will be wearing t-shirts branded with the words “rape survivor”. Those who cannot be gagged, such as staff, will wear t-shirts that read “Solidarity with women who speak out.” Stellenbosch Stellenbosch University’s drama department will also be taking on feminist issues with its first production for the year this month, reports their website. The production, a cabaret entitled Vagina Dentata – A Cabaret carries an age restriction of 18 and is not suitable for sensitive viewers. The website describes it as “a daring and provocative musical satire” that deals with the unique stories of South African women. “It’s feministic, sexy and does not beat about the bush,” the website states.
Charl Oberholzer
DAVID CROSS The dispute between UP and Afriforum. regarding the 2011/2012 SRC election came one step closer to resolution on Friday, when Afriforum Youth and UP management appeared in the Pretoria High Court. In an interview with Charl Oberholzer at the Pretoria High Court he revealed AfriForum’s primary ambition was to have a permanent SRC appointed with immediate effect. “We need to constitute a new SRC - that is our only purpose here today,” said Oberholzer. The former SRC President also expressed his belief that the events that led to the
university’s decision to have a re-election were biased and blatantly unconstitutional. Both parties presented their cases before the judge in a 6 hour sitting, which was brought to an end by the judge’s decision to resume the case next week. This case follows after the 2011/2012 student parliament elections were declared null and void by UP, after AfriForum distributed pamphlets that had not yet been approved by the IEC, as per UP election rules. The pamphlets, which were distributed on the Hatfield campus, contained the names and pictures of faculty candidates. Under their
photographs was the caption, “Vote for the AfriForum candidate in your faculty”. Faculty house candidates are supposed to be voted for by merit rather than political party association. Both UP and AfriForum advocates refused to comment, expressing they were not at liberty to discuss the case. The court case is set to resume this week. UP has said that no decisions regarding a permanent SRC will be taken until the verdict has been delivered. Until then, a temporary representative body (TRC) has been formed to manage the SRC’s duties.

AfriForum vs UP – what the other parties have to say MARGEAUX ERASMUS Francois Cloete, VF+ Studente Chairperson “I agree with AfriForum, UP did act unconstitutionally. There was a legitimate election held last year. Because of the delay with the results, a Temporary Student Committee (TSC) was formed again. This would discourage democracy at the University of Pretoria. VF+ feels that the results of last year’s election must be released and that a re-election would just waste time and money. Students don’t worry about stupid politics. They want a Student Representative Committee (SRC) that works for them and the policy of the party that they voted for in the Student Governance structure.” Tokologo Ngakane, SASCO Chairperson “While we respect AfriForum’s right to access the South African courts (it is what the ANC and other liberation movements fought for), we do, however, think it is quite petty and distasteful of AfriForum to go and solve student matters in a court instead of them showing a sign of remorse for transgressing the rules of the Student Governance constitution and the rules as set out by the IEC. As SASCO we will not be deterred in fighting for students of the university,
especially students from working-class backgrounds. AfriForum must face up to their transgression, it’s as simple as that.” Jordan Griffiths, DASO Chairperson “This court case isn’t about the constitution but more about AfriForum attempting to save face and prove the university wrong. AfriForum have stated time and time again that they didn’t break any rules because of the fact that there are no written rules. However, there is one rule which is written down in our constitution which societies are aware of and that is that you must have any election material approved by the IEC before you distribute it. This is located in section 79C. Without their approval, no material goes out. AfriForum completely ignored this rule and as a result, it is the students of the University of Pretoria who suffer. Their behaviour undermined the democratic process and there was almost universal agreement among societies that the election wasn’t free and fair. While AfriForum will argue that the university went too far in announcing a re-election, the fact is that they have only themselves to blame. While AfriForum attempts to fight the university and preserve its reputation, the students will suffer as they still don’t have a fully empowered SRC. Unfortunately, it seems that in this whole process the needs of the students have been placed last.”
Thabo Mdlalose, Deputy Chairperson of COPE@TUKS “AfriForum taking the university to court is unfortunate, however, well within their rights as a society on campus. COPE@Tuks applauds this bold stance by AfriForum as it clearly indicates the influence societies have at this institution. If the university is solely promoting student interests, we believe they would have released the results so that student parliament and the SRC were in order. They should’ve accepted the R50 000 fine AfriForum paid and released the results to ensure that the student votes were not in vain. The students of the University of Pretoria achieved nothing from the university’s stance of withholding the results. Who then benefited from this? Certainly not the students.” Mthokozisi Nkosi, Temporary Student Committee (TSC) Chairperson “The elections might have been free but they were certainly not fair at all. The university was therefore correct to impose punishment on AfriForum as that would help, in the long run, to send a strong message to societies that if election rules are broken there will be repercussions. AfriForum also has every right to challenge the decision made if they feel it isn’t fair.”
Tshwane University of Technology The Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) Pretoria Campus was recently robbed of R900 000 by what appeared to be Coin security guards, according to the TUT website. The robbery, which took place on 24 January, was carried out by robbers dressed like Coin security guards driving a vehicle which resembled those driven by Coin employees. “They passed about seven security points at which they were identified visibly and by means of personal as well as company identity cards before they could enter the collection room. They were well aware of all the protocols to be followed during money collection,” said Dr Doeke Tromp, Chief Financial Officer. TUT security guards suspected nothing until the actual coin vehicle arrived an hour later. According to the website the case is currently being investigated by SAPS. University of Cape Town Students of the University of Cape Town (UCT) took to the streets on 9 February in the annual “Sax Appeal” drive, reports their website. Sax Appeal, a UCT Rag initiative, is a satirical magazine written by UCT students. Students dressed up in creative outfits in their attempts to sell the magazine to motorists for R20. Students aimed to raise R1 million through the sale of 40 000 magazines. All proceeds go to SHAWCO (Students’ Health and Welfare Centres Organisation). University of the Free State A student at the University of the Free State (UFS) recently made it into the Guinness Book of Records. Wheelchairbound Herman van Heerden did so by holding a stationary wheelie in his wheelchair for 10 hours and 1 second. He achieved his record attempt on 11 October last year but had to wait three months for his attempt to be verified and become official. Herman was born with spina bifida, a congenital disorder caused by the incomplete closing of the embryonic neural tube, which leaves some vertebrae overlying the spinal cord which does not fully form, so it remains unfused and open. Herman, who only had to hold the wheelie for four hours to achieve a Guinness World Record, did not have any food or water during the attempt, nor was he allowed a bathroom break.

Rag: time for a change?
MARGEAUX ERASMUS The Rag Procession has come and gone, but once again the question of Rag’s future has raised it’s ugly head. Perdeby covered various stories concerning the future of Rag last year: from Tuks Rag’s debt problems to allegations concerning the discontinuation of all the TuksRes traditions, including Serrie, Ienk Melodienk, Rag and Spring Day. All this culminated in a response from the University of Pretoria’s management saying that Tuks traditions are not in danger and that Rag would definitely continue in 2012. Dr Willem Jorissen, the Acting Director of Student Affairs, confirmed this stance earlier this month saying, “As with all the collective organised student-life activities, the value it adds will continuously be evaluated.” Dr Jorissen assured Perdeby that “there is no hidden agenda on the future of Rag” but added that the university is evaluating the impact of all student activities such as sport, culture and Rag on “student academic success” and the so called “holistic development of our students.” Rag (Reach out and Give), a charity organisation, oversees three main activities at Tuks: the UP Beats Festival which sees local bands and artists performing on stage at the Rag farm, the Rag Procession where Tuks’s residences and day houses parade their floats to bystanders and collect money for charities, and the crowning of the Rag Queen. Tuks Rag Executive Member of Networking and Archives Thato Moagi told Perdeby that they have tried to preserve the structure and traditions of Rag, but that Rag has been forced to change as a student provider because of the dynamics and regulation of the university.
However, Rag at other universities have been undergoing several changes over the last few years. The Oppidan Press, an independent paper run by students of Rhodes University (RU), wrote in a 2011 Orientation issue that RU Rag was cancelled in 1992 because of students’ excessive drinking and misbehaviour. Their Rag comprised of a procession, and often concluded with a Rag ball that evening. According to the article, “Rag was once a highly anticipated event amongst Grahamstown residents.” But as the events eventually came to be considered too “alcohol-orientated”, residents in Grahamstown lost interest in supporting it. Now Rhodes takes part in community-based projects to get students involved in their community. More recently, Stellenbosch University (SU), underwent a dramatic transformation. Angélique Mills, the Maties Prim Committee Vice Chairperson told Perdeby that last year, the Prim Committee felt that change was needed in the Rag event and they decided to only participate in “Vensters”, a ten-minute show put on by the residence and their Rag partners. As a result, the Rag committee was disbanded in August 2011. The reasons for this decision are numerous, ranging from the high cost of Rag to insufficient input from students and a waste of time that could be better used by residences in their Welcoming Programme. Mills added that the Matie Community Service used to get its funding from Rag, and in an attempt to prevent this department from losing money used to help the community, SU established the Maties MAD² (Making A Decision 2 Make A Difference) committee. “Thus MAD² was created to help refocus the main aim of Rag: to bring in funds for MGD while having student fun,” said
Mills, who is also the MAD² Head Coordinator. “The welcoming experience that first years have has not been detracted from or disadvantaged in any way. On the whole, the events MAD² offered were very successful and enjoyable to first years. I can really only see the committee moving forward with the students of Stellenbosch,” said Mills Corné Zanberg, the Rag Chairperson for the North-West University (Pukke), said that he cannot imagine life as a first year without the opportunity to experience Rag. “Pukke Rag has not changed a lot during the past few years and the spirit and manner in which Rag is held is still the same as [it has always been],” said Zanberg. According to Zanberg, Pukke Rag differs from Rag at other universities because their SRC has two Rag portfolios, namely Rag and SRCS (Student Rag Community Service). The SRCS is a registered NGO and Rag is one of its fundraisers. Zandberg said that together, the Rag and SRCS form the biggest studentdriven charity organisation of its type in the world. Zanberg said that the current system and regulations that are in place at Pukke should prevent Rag from being changed in the future. He added that it will be up to the next two Rag Chairpersons to decide whether Pukke Rag will continue. Students have been asssured that Rag at Tuks will be preserved for at least the next few years. But is it time for Tuks Rag to make a change, or is Tuks doing Rag the right way? Tweet your thoughts to @perdebynews or @MargeauxErasmus. Photo: Gerhard Louw & Marius Veldhyzen van Zaten

McCarthy Audi, TuksRag and the A1
McCarthy Audi have made their presence felt on campus throughout the Rag celebrations but they’re not done just yet. After being crowned as the Rag Queen for 2012, one extraordinarily lucky lady will be driving the Audi A1 for the duration of her reign. With curvaceous lines belying the power this car contains, it’s not exceptionally difficult to be seduced by the Audi A1. The engine is surreptitious in sound but not in performance. The urban landscape is quickly and efficiently navigated with the help of dynamic suspension and the optional MMI navigation on a 6.5 inch screen above the control unit on the dashboard. The control unit itself is just as impressive, with two Micro SD card slots with a 20GB hard drive that may be used to store music and various other files. Optional steering wheel controls make the driver’s access to all these features effortless. The tabbed display screen means you stay informed: whether it be the music file you’re jamming to or your Audi A1’s average fuel consumption. The Audi A1 comes with two optional equipment lines: Attraction, for the trendy; and Ambition, which is the sportier version. It is available only as a three door. Prices range from R219 900 for the 1.2T FSI (63kW) Attraction to R312 000 for the 1.4T FSI S line (136kW) Ambition, excluding optional extras. A diesel engine is also available as the 1.6 TDI from R247 000. It’s not the cheapest car available but why spend money when you can make it?McCarthy Audi is giving students from the University of Pretoria an opportunity to act as professional spotters. Bring a potential customer to McCarthy Audi and if the transaction is successful, you’ll receive R1000 on presentation of your valid student card. The promotion is only available at the following McCarthy Audi dealerships: Audi Centre Menlyn (012 365 8300), Audi Centre Arcadia (012 300 8300), Audi Centre Westrand (011 375 4800) and Audi Middleburg (013 243 2214).

Pssst... Only two weeks in, and Pssst … is already overflowing with too much gossip to handle. Speaking of too much to handle, Pssst … sees Nerina first years are finding life in the big bad world a little draining. Word of advice, passing out in the study centre after only a few days of lectures does not bode well. Blykbaar is `n ekstra jaar of so in Kollege Huis nie a bekomernis nie, so lank as wat die bier flooi. Shame. Pssst ... hears that the men of Kollege claim that while Nerina girls can party, Jasmyn girls are easier to get up to their rooms. Yes, Pssst ... saw you doing the walk
of shame, girls. The Slurpies have been living up to Jasmyn’s reputation, apparently. Seems as though Kollege’s bad boy image is rubbing off on the Jagsmyn girls. Perfect combination? Pssst ... thinks so. Speaking of trying to get attention. Pssst ... hears the reason Inca and Lilium first years on main campus are dressed in their Ienkdrag is because they are being punished after a few of the girls being caught in Kiaat huis. We expect no less from Lilium, but Inca? Maybe, for once, they’ll be interesting this year. It was Drastoel last week and Pssst ... hears Mopanie went around hurling insults at all the losers after they won. Warning boys, Maroela is on the warpath so you might want to watch out. Speaking of Drastoel, Sonop first years reportedly got it pretty bad after they broke Sonop’s winning streak. When the semis returned to the house, there was no sight of either the HK or the first years. Pssst ... has a feeling it wasn’t pretty? Pssst ... is worried about the new Boekenhout first years, after the guys left their very drunk girlfriend stranded and palmed her off onto a bunch of strangers. Nice. Pssst ... understands the reason Maroela’s been getting into so many fights lately is because they gearing themselves up for their annual Boksaand event. The manne got into serious trouble with Tuks for advertising Boksaand on campus. Pssst ... will definitely be there, though. So watch for the next edition. As always you can send your tips to m.perdeby. co.za. Or tweet them for the world to see @ perdebynews.

BEYERS DE VOS You know how people are annoying? Well, here is a list of the top ten most annoying types of people. Enjoy. 1. People who are can’t be drunk properly. People who get angry or sad when they get drunk are no fun. These people should try alternative methods of taking the edge off. Like water aerobics. Or knitting. 2. People who talk in movie theatres. There is no need for you to explain what is happening on screen or repeat any of the dialogue. We’re all watching the movie, we can all hear for ourselves. Why are you in a movie to talk, anyway? Shut your face up.
Last week’s solution:
Videos: liked our reviews of the new Jack Parow or Van Coke Kartel albums? You can watch the music videos for their latest singles on the website or our Youtube channel.
3. People who walk through the crowd at concerts. You know those people who try and get to the front halfway through a set, because they have “friends” waiting for them there? Or people meandering through the crowd? Where are you going? Stand still and watch. It is really annoying to have a constant flow of traffic around you while you are trying to watch people making their sweet music. 4. People who don’t understand how Fego works. It is no use stepping one step away from the till when you’ve bought whatever it is you’re going to feed on. You are just making it impossible for everyone who is waiting to collect something to get to the collection point. You’re clogging it up.

5. People who jump to the front of traffic queues. The stereotypical culprit here is taxis. But I’ve seen a few students do it too. Patience is one of them virtue things, after all. 6. People who ride elevators for one floor. How lazy do you actually have to be to ride from the third to the fourth floor of the HSB? I marvel at your ability to even walk to the campus, if you can’t manage 20 steps. 7. People who walk slowly or stop suddenly in the middle of walkways. Do you not realise that there are a million people behind you who need to get somewhere? 8. People who ask a question just as class finishes. All you are doing is keeping dozens of students from getting the coffee they’ve been craving for an hour (see number 4). You are a cruel, cruel person. 9. People who don’t understand how queues work. You are not going to be any closer to the front of the queue if you stand so close to someone that they can tell what religion you are. The queue is going have the same amount of people in it regardless of how little space there is between them. So just back the fun bus up a bit, okay? 10. People who don’t understand what it means to party in Aandklas. You have to get on the tables and dance. It’s what you do in Aandklas. If you don’t know that, get out. Rule number three: as jy nie dans nie is jy f*kol.

Laughing gas: the cheap high that huffing can buy BERND FISCHER Demi Moore’s recent hospitalisation caused a worldwide media frenzy. After entertainment news website TMZ broke the story, the two most popular searches on Google were “Demi Moore” and “nitrous oxide”. To many, the latter term might come as a surprise. Usually, when we hear that a celebrity has been rushed to hospital for a drug-related incident, we expect to hear about Hollywood’s usual favourites: heroin, cocaine and prescription painkillers. Nitrous oxide belongs to a category of drugs known as inhalants. More commonly referred to as “whip-its” or “whippets”, it is taken by inhaling the nitrous oxide from aerosol cans that use nitrous oxide chargers. These include, but are not limited to, cooking spray and whipped cream – this, of course, is where the habit got its nickname from. Users will first empty out the cans into a balloon or plastic bag to make the inhalation process easier. However, the use of this drug for recreational purposes is uncommon for people of Moore’s age. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health in the United States, two million American teenagers had abused inhalants such as nitrous oxide in the year 2009. Sadly, this trend has also made an appearance among South African teens. Just last year, a 15-year-old pupil from Crawford College in Sandton died after inhaling a household spray in an attempt to get high. But why is this drug so popular among the youth? Two reasons: first, it is easily attainable (and legal), and second, according to medical professionals, the effect of nitrous oxide inhalation can mimic the intensity of other more addictive psychoactive drugs. Although only a brief high of a minute or two is experienced, Dr Harris Stratyner of the Caron Treatment Center in New York says that inhaling this gas results in a feeling of euphoria while experiencing an
out-of-body sensation. Stratyner maintains that it is not all fun and games. “If you use a lot of it, you’re not going to wake up,” he says. Hypoxia of the brain, a condition in which the brain is deprived of oxygen – and consequently dies – is a very common result of inhalant abuse. “Dark holes” in the brain have been recorded in patients who participate in nitrous oxide inhalation. Other effects include a feeling of warmth and a sense of disorientation, but also nausea, vitamin B-12 deficiency (which can lead to anaemia), blood vessel haemorrhages in the lungs, cardiac arrest, seizures and even the possibility of falling into a coma. The drug
is also known to stimulate weight loss and to cause depression and memory loss. Back in the 1800s when its properties were first discovered it was a fashionable drug used among poets and aristocrats at “laughing gas parties”. “Those who inhale the gas once are always anxious to inhale it a second time,” states a recovered pamphlet for a Victorian laughing party. Although addiction was not medically classified as a disease back then, its history is clearly an indication that the gas has always had the tendency to be addictive. Today, nitrous oxide has an important
function in the medical industry. Dentists use the gas before dental procedures and local anaesthetics (such as novocaine injections) are administered. However, under these conditions the gas is regulated with oxygen because nitrous oxide displaces oxygen in the human body, causing carbon dioxide levels to rise. It is this increase in carbon dioxide that leads to shortness of breath, loss of consciousness and ultimately the possibility of damage to the brain. A gas which is also used in race cars to increase power output of engines can evidently not be safe for the human body, especially when abused. As far as treatment of the addiction goes, it’s highly unlikely that someone will enter rehab for nitrous oxide addiction because often the gas cannot be detected in urine or bloodscreening tests. It’s therefore the responsibility of informed society members to help the people that they think might be addicted. The most common signs of abuse include chemical odours on the individual’s clothing or breath, an unusual amount of empty containers being disposed of in their home, and sores around the mouth. Although rehabilitation centres for inhalant abuse are rare and difficult to find, there are organisations that can help. The National Inhalant Prevention Coalition, WeDoRecover and other similar organisations aid you in locating relevant treatment centres in your vicinity. Despite proof of negative long-term health effects and a number of recorded deaths each year, it appears that little public attention is given to nitrous oxide inhalation. It is at times like these that we must ask: is it our responsibility as a society to make sure that this drug habit remains a topic of discussion?

(“The Money and the Power”) is all about keeping it gangster soos die ANC, sodat jy nie met iemand hoef te praat as jy nie wil nie.

coloured rapper genoem Skallywag. Yo-Landi se solo album is genoem Die Stem.
P.H.Fat will be releasing a new five track EP, titled You Are Going To Die, that will be available from their website (www.phfat.co.za) for download on 20 February. In a surprise move Smooth Mike (vocals), Disco Izrael (vocals) and Narch (beats and production) left the record label that released their debut album Dinosaur Blood in 2011 to reclaim their independence. “Much of our success can be attributed to what could be called ‘piracy’ so we decided to legitimize that process,” say the three-piece from Cape Town. “We think in certain situations that the record label concept will work. In our case, where we want to do whatever we want, we are certainly not sure. That’s why we’re trying out the concept of giving away music. It’s awesome when we can show up and do a show in a place where nobody has ever paid for our music and some people know our words. We want to encourage that.”
According to P.H.Fat, their latest offering is more selfish, dark and honest, “In some regards it’s a typical second album.” All of which is hinted at in the ominous title, You Are Going To Die. “The title is about the idea of confronting the inevitable. Nobody on earth can say what happens after the point of death. The one thing we can all say for certain is that we are all going to die. P.H.Fat would hate to lie to you. It’s quite a liberating thought really. One of the absolutely equalizing facts of belonging to the human race.” You can’t, however, live off of good natured sharing and caring. So for the fans who would like to support P.H.Fat, you can make a donation via EFT, Paypal or SMS. Perdeby will be giving away one double ticket prize to P.H.Fat’s gig at Arcade Empire on 1 March for the Pretoria leg of their tour. To enter tweet @perdebynews or go to our Facebook page and name one of the tracks found of P.H.Fat’s new EP release.

Working met Roger was a total mind-f**k. Hy is soos ons f*kken guru of iets.
Afrikaans rap has been evolving since bands like Brasse Vannie Kaap and Not My Dog hit the scene in the late 1990s. Contemporary artists such as Die Antwoord and Jack Parow are blazing the trail for zef Afrikaans rap, pushing the boundaries of what is considered acceptable language in a traditionally conservative Afrikaans culture. Jack Parow returns after his platinum selling 2010 debut album, Jack Parow. His latest offering, Eksie Ou, showcases Parow’s mixture of boeremusiek, dubstep and rap. In Eksie Ou, Parow overwhelms listeners with an array of collaborations including Francois van Coke, Gazelle and South African music legend David Kramer. On the album, Parow comments on the paranoia evident in the Afrikaans and South African culture. Many of the tracks have a light feel to them at first – something to bounce around to – but all of them contain serious social commentary. Parow sings about everything from racism to alcohol abuse, from consumerism to the tokolosh. Eksie Ou laments superficiality in society and
the supposed loss of masculinity. The track “Biscuits & Biltong” features David Kramer, whose distinct guitar style gives the listener the urge to swing a poppie around the room in an impromptu langarm. Playful songs such as “Laat Ons Suip” remind you of what it is to be South African at a braai with a beer in hand. The chorus embraces a feeling of old Afrikaans boeremusiek before twisting back into Parow’s signature beat. With a poke at African mythology, “Hosh Tokolosh” is a cheeky collaboration with afrotechno group Gazelle. “Hard Partytjie Hou” features Francois van Coke and comments on the state of South African music with lyrics such as: “Yo, as jy van die liedjie hou, p**s vir Nicholis Louw.” “Spring Moederf*kker” features P.H.Fat and is a dangerous combination of commentary on sex and religion while boasting a dubstep base line. The album is an interesting and successful combination of many styles of South African music, languages, cultural norms and mythologies. If you weren’t a fan of Jack Parow before, you will be after Eksie Ou. RATING: 7/10

Ek dink ook as ek my
One can dream.

Review: The Dubious Salvation of Jack V
BEYERS DE VOS It is almost a prerequisite for any South African author to write a novel concerning the greatest of South African literary themes: apartheid. Lately, it has produced stale and forgettable offerings: the genre is saturated with contrived, unoriginal voices. Into this swirl of recycled narratives comes The Dubious Salvation of Jack V, the debut novel of London-based, South African-raised author Jacques Strauss. And what a breath of fresh air it is. Two things count in its favour: its relatively short length and the charming sincerity of the narrator, Jack Viljee, whose views of the world are both naïve and surprising, funny and incisive.
The plot is simple: Jack is an 11-year-old boy growing up in Pretoria in the late 1980s. His mother is English and his father is Afrikaans. He has a younger sister. He spends most of his time with his domestic worker, Susie. His life is perfectly suburban, but when this life is disrupted by the arrival of Susie’s son, Percy, things get a little more complicated. Jack loves Susie like a second mother and sees Percy, who is angry and dangerous, as intruding into his ordered life. And when Jack betrays Susie, he begins to realise that life is not as straightforward as he always thought. The simplicity of the plot is the book’s greatest strength. The politics of the time are constantly present, even in the comfortable domestic delusion of Jack’s world, but Strauss never allows it to dominate his narrative. Instead, it manifests itself in small ways in his hero’s life – in the stories Susie tells him, in the behaviour of a friend’s parents, in discovering his sexuality, in the small tensions of a bilingual household – allowing Jack’s childlike reactions to these relatively normal events to speak volumes about the darkness and the dangers of the time. Jack’s world includes homophobia, abuse, racism, religious prejudice and great instability. But much like Scout Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, Jack is utterly relatable. He gives the novel an affable and bracing voice, allowing Strauss to handle his themes – loyalty and betrayal, loss, morality, truth and the power of lies – with a deft and readable ease. Strauss has a smart and original style. He has created a funny and thoughtful story, a captivating record of the experience of growing up in a confusing world. Both undeniably South African (readers from Pretoria will find scenes from the city especially touching) and remarkably universal, Strauss has done what so many have tried and failed to do: reinvigorate a tired genre. For that alone, he should be lauded. This is a great book. Cover ilustration: Louse Z. Pomeroy

Tuks continue flying start in Varsity Cup KATLEGO PHEEHA After having thrashed arch rivals UJ in their first match of the 2012 FNB Varsity Cup, Tuks proved their dominance in Pretoria by beating neighbours TUT Vikings 40-0 on 13 February at the TUT stadium. TUT had some good scoring opportunities early on but failed to utilise them. The lost opportunities would become the story of the game for the TUT Vikings. Only a few moments after TUT failed to capitalise on the break by Graff, his opposite number Wesley Dunlop found himself with a similar break. However, the men in white made no mistake, as Dunlop made a clinical outside pass to centre Jerome Pretorius. He passed to Blommetjies, who crossed the line comfortably for the first try of the game in the seventh minute. Dunlop then kicked the three-point conversion to give Tuks an 8-0 lead. After the first strategy break, Tuks started the second part of the first half on a high and spent most of the rest of the first half inside the TUT 22. Tuks formed a very effective rolling maul after a great lineout on the TUT 15-metre line. However, a moment of brilliant defence by TUT saw the maul overturned and the ball cleared. There was no respite for TUT as minutes later, Tuks kicked for touch after being awarded a penalty and after another good lineout, Tuks was just metres from the try but a knock-on by Pretorius saw the chance go begging. The teams went into the change rooms with Tuks still leading by only eight points. In the second half, both teams looked more energetic. TUT controlled the ball well but were unable to get past the Tuks forwards. The pressure, however, began to show as TUT won a penalty close to the goal posts, but decided to kick for a touch. During the 49th minute, Tuks made an unexpected substitution as star flyhalf
Dunlop came off the field and was replaced by Willie du Plessis. Tuks seemed to be taking control of the ball and territory as they patiently moved the ball towards the TUT goal line. A high tackle saw Tuks being awarded a penalty
on the TUT five-metre line, which was quickly taken by hooker Jacques Momberg who pushed his way through three defenders to score the second try of the game. Du Plessis then kicked the conversion to give Tuks a 16-0 lead in the
53rd minute. The flood gates seemed to open up as three minute later, centre Dabeon Draghoender showed some individual skill as he broke through the line and sprinted 40 metres to score the third try of the game in the corner. Despite the difficult angle, the kick was made to look easy by du Plessis and Tuks now led 24-0. Both teams once again tried kicking for territory whenever they could, but some great team work by Tuks saw the TUT defence split open yet again and flyhalf du Plessis continued his great start to the season as he received an inside pass and then sprinted over the try line to give Tuks five more points plus the bonus point. He then converted his own try and Tuks looked comfortable with a 32-0 lead. Moments later, Draghoender made another great sprint after some fancy foot work and once again ran all the way to the try line, only for the try to be disallowed as the TMO declared it was inconclusive on the uncertain grounds of whether or not the ball was properly grounded over the line. Tuks mounted one final attack after the siren had gone, and a good rolling maul controlled by captain Jono Ross saw Tuks being awarded a penalty try. The conversion kick was good and the game ended with the score at 40-0 in favour of Tuks. Tuks will face NWU-Pukke next, at UP’s LC de Villiers stadium on 20 February. The NorthWest side has proved to be a challenge for Tuks in the past. Coach Nollis Gilbert will no doubt be aware of his side’s ability to win big games at crucial times and will be hoping for another good all-round performance by Tuks.
Waar is jy oorspronklik vandaan? So ek is `n ware Cheetah. Hoeveel byeenkomste woon jy per jaar by?
Ek oefen vyf ure elke dag. En hopelik ek, as dinge goed gaan.

AmaTuks held to draw by Black Aces
CARLO COCK AmaTuks continued their unbeaten run in the National First Division (NFD) on 14 February in their Valentine’s Day clash with Mpumalanga Black Aces at Absa Tuks Stadium. Having gone into the summer break at the top of the NFD log, AmaTuks were firm favourites to take all three points against a Black Aces side that was second from the bottom. Of the two teams, AmaTuks started off better, playing some good football, but neither team created much in the way of chances in the opening 30 minutes. Black Aces created the first scoring chance 36 minutes in but striker Marawaan Bantam’s shot went just wide. Soon after, Black Aces had another chance to take the lead from a free kick, but failed to trouble Siya Mngoma in the AmaTuks goal. AmaTuks then created a few chances of their own in the closing moments of the first half. First Philani Khwela failed to capitalise on some good play by AmaTuks down the left wing, shooting off target. Then striker Chibuzor Ngwombo placed his effort wide of the goal after a glorious throughball from Sibusiso Themba. Just before the half time whistle, Sandile Mazibuko missed another great chance, shooting straight at Black Aces goalkeeper, Sherwyn Naiker. At half time, Steve Barker made a bold move, bringing on Lucky Mzizi off the bench, which changed the game in the
second half. Mzizi made an immediate impact, delivering a perfect cross from a corner only for Siya Shoyisa to miss his header in the 49th minute. During the 53rd minute, Mzizi found himself in space on the edge of the Black Aces’s penalty area but miss-cued his shot, sending it high over the bar. AmaTuks were certainly on top, playing the better football and dominating ball possession. The chances kept coming but the home side’s finishing left a lot to be desired. During the 59th minute, Khwela failed to finish off a great cross from Mzizi completely missing his attempted header. Mzizi then had another shot of his own, this time narrowly missing the bottom corner of the goal. During the 65th minute, AmaTuks missed another clear opportunity after a good one-two passing exchange and through-ball from Khwela, Ngwombo this time the culprit. AmaTuks were made to pay for their catalogue of misses in the 69th minute when Marawaan Bantam gave Black Aces the lead. After some brilliant passing on the edge of the box, Bantam curled an unerring finish into Mngoma’s top corner. As brilliant as the goal was, it did come against the run of play and soon the familiar pattern of the game continued. With just over 15 minutes left to play, AmaTuks were in danger of suffering their first defeat of their NFD league campaign. AmaTuks increased the tempo of the game with some good passing and during the 75th minute, Ngwombo
missed his header after a good early cross from Khwela. During the 78th minute, Shoyisa was denied at point-blank range by Naiker, who was having a good day in the Black Aces goal. Then during the 82nd minute, AmaTuks were reduced to ten men when Setjhaba Mmuso was sent off. Two minutes later though, the home side levelled matters with a fantastic individual goal from Junior Sibande. After beating the Black Aces defence with some neat dribbling, Sibande fired an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner to make it 1-1 with a few minutes left to play. Not satisfied with the prospect of taking only one point from the game, AmaTuks went in search of the winner, but were denied during the 89th minute when Mzizi’s quick footwork and well-timed pass gave Ngwombo the chance to win it and he shot straight at Naiker. The draw was AmaTuks’s 7th of the season and saw them move three points clear of Thanda Royal Zulu to the top of the NFD log. While AmaTuks will be disappointed to have dropped points at home against such lowly opposition, they have now gone unbeaten an impressive 16 games since the start of the season and the quality of the performance suggests AmaTuks are in with a good chance of finally getting promotion to the PSL. Tuks 1 secure Knock Out Cup semi KEVIN VAN DER LIST The Tuks 1 cricket side made light work of Sinoville in their first game of the Knock Out Cup when they thumped the visitors by ten wickets at the TuksOval on 12 February. The Knock Out Cup consists of the top eight teams of last year’s Premier League, each vying for the top spot in a knockout tournament. Tuks’s victory will see them progress to the semi-finals where a team and date must still be finalised. Sinoville managed a mere 60 runs in 38,5 overs. This total proved to be no challenge for Tuks as they finished off the game in the eighth over, scoring 63 without loss. Because of Northerns’ commitments, the Tuks 1 side was short of six players, but “Tuks blew [Sinoville] completely off the field,” said Tuks 1 coach Pierre de Bruyn. He added that the boys have been working hard and that they are mature and disciplined in what they do on the field. Opening bowler Leon Nel struck in the first over of the game and from then on Tuks managed to take regular wickets. Tuks’s brilliant bowling was coupled with outstanding fielding
and a few risky shots from the Sinoville batsman who tried to relieve pressure, but which only resulted in Tuks wickets. Sinoville were unable to consolidate and were 12 for 5 in the eleventh over. Despite Sinoville’s lengthy 64-ball partnership which only yielded 15 runs, they still lost wickets. The visitors suffered another setback when one of their batters had to retire, hurt from a blow to the hand. Tuks’s leading bowler in the Premier League, Ernest Kemp, having taken 31 wickets in the league so far, had figures of 10-2-2-9. Tuks was intent on ending the game quickly when they started their innings. They smashed the ball all over the park and were soon 39-0 after five overs. The innings yielded nine boundaries to the one of Sinoville. Brothers Reghardt (28) and Anton Verster (35) scored their runs off 23 balls each. Sinoville coach Evert Laubscher put the loss down to their poor batting display and Tuks’s ability to restrict their style of play. Tuks will now look forward to the semi-final in the Knock Out Cup and five remaining Premier League matches. Photo: provided
