Since 2018, the Club has been globally recognised as one of the world’s most sustainable golf clubs, having implemented a number of environmentally-friendly initiatives on-site through its two on-going campaigns, #KeepitGreen and GAME ON. Through its sustainability campaigns, the projects implemented on site and commitments to global environmental movements, such as the UN Sports for Climate Action Initiative and becoming carbon neutral, the Club has been proud to be recognised with numerous accolades in recent years.

IMPLEMENTATION OF GPS SPRAYING EQUIPMENT The Club has purchased GPS spraying equipment to increase efficiency and reduce the amount of product applications used by targeting specific areas of the golf courses at one time The use of GPS spraying equipment has helped to reduce product applications by up to 30%

Sentosa Golf Club’s first ever sustainability campaign, #KeepItGreen, was launched in January 2018 at the SMBC Singapore Open. The campaign was designed to increase awareness for the game of golf amongst youngsters in the local community, as well as draw attention to sustainable practices within golf. #KeepItGreen was unveiled by Asian golf star Gavin Green, who supported the campaign through the tournament, with Sentosa Golf Club in association with the Singapore Golf Association, by offering free rounds of golf to local juniors for every green in regulation that Gavin hit during the week. The campaign has now become a way of life at the Club with a number of sustainable initiatives having been implemented over the last few years. INSTALLATION OF RESERVOIR LAKES As part of The Tanjong’s redevelopment in 2016, the Club installed six large reservoir lakes around the golf course The installation has allowed the golf courses to become self-irrigating as storm run-off water is recycled from the lakes and used as irrigation for both golf courses

REMOVAL OF SINGLE USE PLASTICS AND INSTALLATION OF WATER STATIONS AROUND THE GOLF COURSES The Club has banned the use of single-use plastic water bottles from its golf courses Water stations have been installed at various points around the golf courses to allow members and guest to fill a single re-usable water bottle throughout their rounds The initiative has helped to save around 300,000 plastic water bottles over a two-year period

INSTALLATION OF A SINGLE HEAD CONTROL IRRIGATION SYSTEM The Club has converted its irrigation system to a single-head control irrigation system, allowing it to reduce its water resources by up to 40% INSTALLATION OF RECHARAGEABLE LITHIUM BATTERIES IN GOLF CARTS All of the Club’s golf carts now use Lithium-ion batteries rather than standard lead batteries The new batteries are rechargeable and have a lifespan of up to eight years, therefore allowing the Club to save more on wastage as the batteries are not needed to be replaced on an annual basis FIRST GOLF CLUB IN ASIA TO USE CARBON PRODUCTS IN AGRONOMY PROGRAMME Sentosa Golf Club became the first golf club in Asia to introduce carbon products in the form of Biochar into their agronomy programme Biochar helps to remove more carbon from the atmosphere as it develops the soil and enhances its foundations to give it a healthier soil profile It is estimated that Biochar in soils could help to increased the uptake of carbon from the atmosphere by up to 10% The use of Biochar has allowed the Club to reduce fertility applications by up to 50% and pesticide applications by up to 95%

CREATION OF BEE COLONIES Bees are one of the world’s most important species as it is estimated that one third of the food we eat in the world is a result of bees. However, the world’s bee population is estimated to be down by around 75%. Four stingless bee (Heterotrigona Itama) colonies were originally created on-site behind the ‘Pyramids’ on The Tanjong’s 4th hole with the intention of raising awareness for the importance of bees to society and playing a part in maintaining the world’s population. A new colony of Apis Cerana or Singapore Honey Bees has also been introduced at the Club in an effort to multiply the current colonies and produce more honey. The new hive is place behind the old structure of Berhala Reping at The Serapong’s hole 6. A bait hive has been placed next to it to encourage existing bees in the area to settle and build honeycombs. The existing colonies were created and helped managed by John Chong, Founder of BEE AMAZED, a visitor centre in Singapore that provides knowledge and information on local bees, honey and basic beekeeping techniques.

Later this year, the Club are set to become the first golf club in Asia with the ability to grind down food and horticultural waste to reuse as fertilizer on the golf courses after it was awarded a golf sustainability fund grant by The R&A. It is estimated that up to 40kg of food waste generated each day along with one tonne of horticultural waste produced each month will be recycled, resulting in an estimated cost saving of up to 30% on monthly waste disposal over a one-year period. A direct contract for the supply, delivery and installation of its horticultural waste composter, including maintenance and the supply of enzymes for a period of two years has recently been awarded by Sentosa Golf Club to Thai-based GreenGlove Technology International Pte Ltd.

WORLD’S FIRST GOLF CLUB TO... JOIN THE UN SPORTS FOR CLIMATE ACTION INITIATIVE On 31 July 2020, SGC made history by becoming the world’s first golf club to join the United Nation’s Sports for Climate Action initiative. The initiative aims to support and guide sports organisations and their communities on a path to achieving the global climate goals set out by world leaders in the Paris Agreement. Launched at the 2020 SMBC Singapore Open, GAME ON is Sentosa Golf Club’s call to action for the golf industry to respond to climate change. It is designed to unite the game’s key stakeholders with the wider golfing community to implement new modern processes to the betterment of the environment, as well as encourage golf clubs worldwide to introduce and accept the GAME ON agronomic and operational model.

It calls on sporting organizations to acknowledge the contribution of the sports sector to climate change and our responsibility to strive towards climate neutrality for a safer planet.

It is connected in its similarities with the R&A’s Golf Course 2030 sustainability initiative that also considers the impacts, both positive and negative, of a changing climate, resource constraints and regulations on course conditions and playability. GAME ON DOCUMENTARY In October 2020, the Club marked its achievement of being named ‘World’s Best Eco-Friendly Golf Facility’ by premiering a new environmental documentary film to raise awareness of the importance of climate change in golf. The film showcases to viewers some of the key measures already implemented at the Club, such as the creation of bee colonies and installation of reservoir lakes; serving as inspiration to golf’s response to climate change, as well as helping clubs around the world to understand the importance of reducing their own carbon footprint.

COMMIT TO CARBON NEUTRALITY In April 2021, Sentosa become the world’s first golf club to commit to becoming carbon neutral by 2022 at the HSBC Women’s World Championship. Contributions from golf rounds will be set aside to support to purchase of certified carbon offsets throughout regional Forestry or Blue Carbon projects to help sequester atmospheric carbon, defend against deforestation, and foster conservation of forests, mangroves and reefs.

THE SERAPONG RENOVATIONS Shortly after launching GAME ON, the Club tackled the renovation works of its iconic Serapong course, in the midst of a global pandemic. Conducting these important renovations in the most sustainable way possible was at the forefront of the Club’s ambitions. For example, by engineering a new sand profile with two laboratory partners to renovate large, 16 year old greens negated the need for numerous trucks to clog up roads to both discard and deliver many tonnes of sand from the property.

SINGAPORE WORLD WATER DAY (SWWD) The Club was among 10 Singapore landmarks participating for the first time in PUB’s (Public Utility Board) City Turns Blue initiative to mark World Water Day. Other landmarks like Resorts World Sentosa and Universal Studios Singapore were lit up in blue from 20 to 22 March 2021 as part of the initiative.

COMMUNITY AND MEMBER ENGAGEMENT Temasek Polytechnic Ideathon A total of 18 secondary schools, 29 teams and 133 secondary school students participated in Temasek Polytechnic’s annual Tourism Innovation Competition (TIC) that occurred on 27 May 2021. The TIC is a platform of industry players to engage with students from upper secondary on specific challenges to be part of the solutions and this year was focused on how to better engage visitors and influencer behaviours towards sustainable waste management. The Club participated in the Ideathon judging and has sponsored experiential prizes that will allow students to understand Sentosa Golf Club’s business and sustainability initiatives in greater depth. Wild Singapore Survey Sentosa Golf Club has recently worked alongside the founder of Wild Singapore, Ria Tan, who visited the Club in July 2021 to conduct the annual intertidal survey along The Serapong’s shores of holes 6 and 7. Alongside the Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC), the team assessed the number of species that are located amongst the golf course. This is important in building up the Sustainable Sentosa Island Community and also in preparation for SDC’s Environmental Impact Assessment engagements for the Sentosa-Brani Master Plan.
