PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Members, I trust you have all been keeping well. Allow me to begin this message by extending Sentosa Golf Club’s welcome and hospitality to the field of 75 players and 12 LPGA officials participating in the HSBC Women’s World Championship from 29 April to 2 May 2021. HSBC Women’s World Championship 2021 Recognised as one of the premier golf events in Asia, the tournament makes its welcome return to Singapore’s shores and the Asia-Pacific region after a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although this year’s event will be played without spectators and run under strict tournament protocols for pandemic safety, there remains much anticipation and excitement surrounding the event. We are delighted that defending Champion Sung-hyun Park and World No.1 Jin-young Ko will headline an exceptional international field, along with fellow South Korean and two-time winner Inbee Park, major winner Danielle Kang from the U.S. and five-time LPGA Tour winner, Minjee Lee of Australia. Against the backdrop of a yearning for recovery from the pandemic, there is much at stake for Sentosa and Singapore from this tournament. The SGC team aims to deliver a successful event to reinforce our city’s appeal as a safe, vibrant destination that is open for business and tourism. SGC has been working closely with the event organizers IMG, Sentosa Development Corporation and the Singapore Tourism Board on “tournament bubble” requirements, pandemic protocols and potential early vaccinations for the safety of our staff. It would be remiss of us to imagine that there can be no risk of potential imported cases from this event, but members can be assured that firm measures are in place. The SGC team are seasoned tournament warriors and members can count on the team to deliver a safe event that showcases to the world again our immaculate, tournament-ready golf courses and world-class facilities. May I also extend my thanks to members for accommodating the relocation of our golfing and F&B offerings from the main Clubhouse to the Sentosa Pavilion and The Serapong during the tournament. This is temporary and has been organized for your safety.

SGC President Andrew Lim

The success of this major event in Asia will hopefully lead to positive knock-on effects for professional golf, sports and international events across the Asia-Pacific region. Peacock Cup SGC has been strong supporters of local golf and have four touring professionals under our sponsorship programme: Koh Dengshan, Koh Sock Hwee, Abdul Hadi and Jesse Yap. Given the COVID-19 pandemic over the past year, they have had limited opportunities to compete, but I am heartened to share that SGC members have come together to help raise funds and create a monthly tournament – The Peacock Cup, with prize money to support and motivate our pros to practise competitively. While initial funding has been secured, we welcome additional voluntary member contributions in this meaningful endeavour. Please contact the Golfing Reception for more information. New SGC Committee It is my pleasure to inform you that Vernon Khoo has been reappointed SGC Captain and Gloria Kuok has assumed the role of Lady Captain from 1 April 2021. Please join me in congratulating Vernon and Gloria. I would also like to thank Lyn Yeo for her leadership, contribution and dedication during her tenure as Lady Captain of SGC. We have also made the following additions to the Committees with effect from 1 April 2021: • Tay Liam Wee has joined the General Committee • Bernard Teo, Claus Nicolajsen and Hurh Joon have joined the Greens Committee • Lillian Lim has joined the Ladies Sub Committee We have strived to ensure we have a good line up who will contribute strongly to our Club. Sentosa Golf Club is one of the best in the world and the Committees aim to guide the Club to achieve greater accolades and remain the admiration and envy of golfers. We also look to members for your support as we continue to work on building a culture of warmth, courtesy and friendliness among both members and staff. Thank you and happy golfing! GOLF COMMUNITY UNITES FOR INAUGURAL PEACOCK CUP Abdul Hadi won the first ever Chairman’s Peacock Cup on 11 March, although this was a day worth celebrating for many reasons. This new competitive golf series will be held monthly on The Serapong with prize money generously funded by members, to help the Club’s adopted Tour Professionals remain financially stable and match ready for when tournament golf makes its return. It aims to increase and heighten awareness in the golfing community of the sponsored touring pros programme and will hopefully pave the way for future sponsorship opportunities for them. The inaugural flight included the following pros: Koh Deng Shan, Jesse Yap, Abdul Hadi, Koh Sock Hwee. Hadi certainly looked sharp as he took control on the second day and posted a final score of 139 (-5). Koh Deng Shan finished five shots back, with Jesse Yap third and Sock Hwee fourth. The inaugural tournament was made possible with enthusiastic support of the team at SGC, including Captain Vernon Khoo, GM Andrew Johnston, Nicole Thew, Committee members Tay Liam Wee, Bernard Teo and Timothy Yong, and with the inspiring and visionary support of Chairman Bob Tan. Thank you to everyone who supported the event. If you would like to make a voluntary contribution to the Peacock Cup, please scan the QR Code below.

GENERAL

GOLF NEWS CHOO ENDS FOUR-YEAR DROUGHT

MATSUYAMA LANDS MASTERS CROWN Asia has its first male Masters Champion after Hideki Matsuyama won by a shot from Will Zalatoris. The 29-year-old looked to have the tournament in the bag, following a 65 on Saturday, but then he overshot the 15th green and Zalatoris made a late run. But the Japanese superstar could afford a bogey at 18 to make a huge slice of history. “I can't say I'm the greatest, however I'm the first (Japanese) to win a major, and if that's the bar, then I've set it. It's thrilling to think that there are a lot of youngsters in Japan watching. Hopefully in five, ten years, when they get a little older, hopefully some of them will be competing on the world stage.”

NEW SLIM RANGE FROM BUSHNELL

The Serapong was the stage for Choo Tze Huang's first win in four years as he won the first leg of the Singapore Pro Series Invitational and, with it, the winner's cheque for $3,000. Choo, who closed with a bogey for a 72 and total of 141, won by one shot from SGC’s sponsored pro Jesse Yap who missed a birdie on the last to win. For Choo it was his first victory since 2017 and he is now planning to play in Japan. “I felt I swung good under pressure and held myself up well mentally. I'm very happy with the win and this gives me confidence that the changes to my game are paying off. Hopefully, this is the first of many wins in 2021,” he said.

OPTIONS APLENTY WITH NEW TITLEIST BAGS

Bushnell have released two new additions, with the V5 Tour Slim Edition and the V5 Shift Slim Edition. They have moved the battery to the back of the unit which has slimmed down the outer casing so it fits even better in your hand. Which in turn leads to a steadier connection and therefore fewer errors. Both models have a ‘Bite’ magnetic cart mount which allows you to attach it to a golf cart as well as Bushnell’s Jolt technology which produces a short vibration when you lock on to the pin, plus the PinSeeker where a red ring flashes along with the vibration. The Shift Slim edition has a new and improved slope algorithm. To find out more, please visit the Pro Shop.

Titleist have added a collection of new, stylish golf bags for the new season with four stand bags and two hybrid bags being introduced. The Players Collection stand bags all offer plenty of pocket options as well as being ideal for those golfers who want a lightweight stand bag without sacrificing on storage. The Players 4 Plus StaDry is the stand-out bag here with a new tee, drinks and apparel pocket, four full-length dividers, eight pockets in total and a new double strap. The Hybrid collection is for the player who likes to carry and use a trolley, so the best of both worlds. The Hybrid 14 and Hybrid 14 StaDry both have 14 full-length club dividers and have an added cart strap loop that allows easy access to your valuables when strapped to the trolley.

T

he HSBC Women’s World Championship is genuinely one of my favourite events. We were all so disappointed when the 2020 event got cancelled so I think we are all very happy and grateful to all the partners in confirming that the tournament will be taking place this year. It always attracts an amazing field, it is justifiably referred to as 'Asia's major', so it is one that I would love to win. I definitely feel like I belong now having won a Major, as well as winning again on the LPGA Tour. Competing against the best players is what you practise for and I have so many friends out on Tour that I really enjoy hanging out with – but we are all there to compete once the tournament starts.

I love Singapore. In normal times I would be really looking forward to the shopping – it's amazing, as are the awesome restaurants. But this year I'll have to settle for the beautiful Tanjong Course as well as the fabulous weather! It is always in amazing condition and it sets up so well with loads of really exciting holes where you really have to think. The course is just beautiful and the fact that you could turn around and see a peacock or a monkey any minute is pretty unique. I've played here twice and I'm hoping that the slightly later date will work to my advantage. I tend to build through the season so this would be a great place to record my first win of 2021. Women’s golf in Asia is really high profile compared to the UK and the US. It will be weird

www.sentosagolf.com

The fact that you could turn around and see a peacock or a monkey any minute is pretty unique not to have spectators at Sentosa, but I guess we are kind of used to it now. This is a very important time for the women's game. There is a lot of focus on women’s sport and I hope that we can draw those eyes onto us in golf and really capitalise on all the interest. To anyone who wants to get started with golf I’d just say have fun first and then take a few lessons to really start developing some good habits. This is such a big year, but if I could represent Great Britain at the Olympics and help Europe win the Solheim Cup, I’d be pretty happy.

WORLD’S BEST READY BE REUNITED AT SEN

Asia’s Major returns to the LPGA Tour after a one-year hiatus due to the pandemic and the field is as sensational as ever. This will be the eighth time that the HSBC Women’s World Championship has visited Sentosa, the first five being played on The Serapong before moving to its new home on The Tanjong.

S

ung Hyun Park, who has two majors to her name already, has had to wait two years to defend her title after a closing 64 saw her overhaul Minjee Lee. Park’s week had been steady rather than spectacular, then everything happened on the Sunday for the Korean. “It had been coming all week,” explained her caddy David Jones. “She was owed so many putts and

12

this time around they were dropping. Every now and then an enigma comes along and that’s what she is.”

62, but it was Wie who made up for her near miss in 2017 when she led after three days.

The previous year we had another US Open champion prevailing with Michelle Wie also finishing like a train. Wie, who has since become a mum, came from five shots behind and signed off with a 65 via a 36-foot birdie putt from just off the front of the final green. Five players equalled or broke the course record of 64, Sei Young Kim came home in 29 for a

The injuries and slumps were soon forgotten as she landed her fifth win on the LPGA Tour, 83 tournaments after that famous win at Pinehurst.

@sentosagolfclub

“I think that has to be the best putt of my career so far,” she said. “It's been a tough journey since 2014. It's been kind of well documented. I've had some injuries, had a really bad year, just lost a lot of confidence.

I'm just really proud of myself for pulling myself out of it. I just wanted to get revenge after last year a little bit,” Wie said. “I kind of came with a slight chip on my shoulder.”

compatriot Stacy Lewis closed out the first of three wins in 2013. Na Yeon Choi, who Lewis would also pip to win the Women’s British Open at St Andrews later that year, was runnerup for the second consecutive year.

But Wie’s putt pales into relative insignificance when you cast your mind back to 2014 when, bizarrely, Paula Creamer was also getting back in the winner’s circle after her US Open victory and a collection of injuries.

Lewis’ win didn’t materialise after any final-day heroics, this was more of a grind as she battled her nerves to get the job done with a closing 71. “The last four or five holes, I was pretty nervous, I'm not going to lie,” Lewis said. “I just played hard and put my head down and tried to make as many putts as I could and fortunately I came away with the win.”

Paula Creamer got her major breakthrough at Oakmont in 2010 but her next win would come courtesy of a play-off with Azahara Munoz at Sentosa in 2014. The last time Creamer had been involved in extra holes was at the Kingsmill in 2012 when she and Jiyai Shin parred the 18th eight times before returning the following morning, playing a different hole and three-putting it. This time Creamer made eagle from 75 feet and that was very quickly that.

The only two-time winner since the tournament’s move to Sentosa is none other than Inbee Park. The South Korean superstar bookended her gold medal in Rio with victories at Sentosa. The first came in 2015 when she defeated the two players either side of her on the world rankings, the then World No.1 Lydia Ko and No. 3 Stacy Lewis. Come the end of the tournament Park astonishingly hadn’t dropped a shot all week.

“I could stand there all day long and hit a putt there, and charting it, it was saying five, six feet, and you know, it hit the back of the hole and went in. I really didn't even watch the last four feet of it. I was just hoping it would slow down when it was near the hole and then it disappeared. I seriously cannot tell you the way I felt. It was like somebody just knocked the wind out of me. It was pretty amazing. It might be one of my favourite wins and that's taking a pretty big leap right there.”

“That’s a big accomplishment for me, and I think I’ve done that probably once before only, and to have pressure every day since Thursday, I think it’s something that I should be really proud of.” At the start of the week Park thought level par would be competitive and so struck up a bet with her dad; should she make a birdie her dad would pay up $500, she would lose $1,000 for every bogey. Final score: Park $7,500, her dad $0.

“I think it ended up really nicely,” Park joked. “It gave me extra motivation I guess. It’s so fun and something other to motivate on and something else to concentrate on.” The 2017 victory contained just two bogeys and a double, but Park would still finish on a tournamentequalling 19-under aggregate thanks to a closing 64. This included an incredible run of eight birdies in 10 holes and her 64 was just good enough to see off Ariya Jutanugarn. The win was even more impressive given that Park hadn’t played since Rio in August 2016 until early in 2017 due to a thumb injury. After an 80 and a withdrawal in the Bahamas Park, tied 30th in Thailand, she was then victorious in Singapore. “I thought it might take maybe a

couple months to get back out on the Tour and to get my rhythm back. I thought I was going to be just a little bit rusty,” said Park. “This week was totally different. Especially the final round was just what I wanted.” In between Park’s double we had her countrywoman Ha Na Jang and it’s hard to say what was more impressive about her dominant performance – her 19-under aggregate and four-shot victory or her dance on the 72nd hole. After firing a fairway wood to 10 feet Jang knocked it in and celebrated with a dance inspired by Beyonce’s Super Bowl performance. “I’m watching the TV and really good music with Beyonce,” Jang said. “I’m trying to dance after my putt. Yeah, single lady. I’m single right now, too.”

Sentosa Golf Club continues its march towards

CARBON NEUTRALITY • Being the first in Asia to introduce Biochar as a fertility enhancement. This has reduced fertility needs by 50% as well as many other supportive applications that are no longer required

From 1 April this year, every round of golf at Sentosa Golf Club (SGC) will be carbon free. The Club is making a commitment to join the United Nations Climate Change Challenge — The Race to Zero (carbon emissions) in 2020 and this is aligned to making Sentosa Island a carbon-neutral destination by 2030. As part of this commitment, the Club has embarked on a path towards carbon neutrality, using wellknown sustainability approaches employed by multinationals1 with similar goals.

• Deploying GPS spraying equipment to reduce application use

Based on the Green House Gas Protocol (GHGP), SGC has undertaken the important first step of establishing its carbon footprint. Major emissions contributors from our operations including electricity consumption, fuel used for vehicles, F&B operations and consumables used in maintaining the golf courses, were tabulated.

SGC intends to sustain such initiatives into 2021, installing two waste digesters to limit carbon emissions by grinding down waste on-site and reusing it as fertiliser. The Club also continues to explore alternative energy solutions such as solar, as well as other sustainable food produce options.

The Club has already introduced many measures over the past five years to push the envelope in carbon abatement. These include:

• Installing a single-head irrigation control system (reducing water resources used by up to 40%) • Creating sustainable herb gardens and bee colonies • Banning all single-use plastic bottles

contend with residual annual emissions estimated to be around 4,009 CO2 equivalent tonnes2.The Club intends to fulfil its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by purchasing certified carbon offsets through regional Forestry or Blue Carbon projects, which will sequester atmospheric carbon while defending against deforestation and fostering conservation of forests, mangroves and reefs. This purchase translates to just over $80,000 for the year. SGC’s vision is to deliver a worldclass facility of exceptional quality, and our commitment to carbon neutrality will safeguard our longterm future and allow us to be a model for sustainability in golf worldwide. “When it comes to climate change, it isn’t game over. It’s very much GAME ON!” 1

Nevertheless, despite these measures, we will still have to

Multinationals with goals towards carbon neutrality include Temasek, Apple and Microsoft Based on a carbon profiling study on 2019 consumption

Every round of golf played at Sentosa Golf Club will be carbon free starting 1 April

• Installing energy efficient air conditioning, heat harvesting and lighting systems to achieve BCA Green Mark Platinum accreditation for its main Clubhouse – the only Club to attain this standard in Singapore • Converting golf cart batteries to rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries that last for up to eight years • Recently installing five electric vehicle chargers

GAME ON! Leading the Charge

W

e are going to witness a lot of change over the next ten years – change for the better. Sentosa Island is set to become a carbon-neutral destination by 2030. That’s the mission set out by Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC). When it comes to climate change, we always say at SGC, ‘It isn’t game over, it’s very much GAME ON’ – and we are committed to do everything we can to meet this goal. The process of achieving carbonneutrality starts with businesses across the Island looking at their own carbon footprints, and the Club has benefitted from getting additional guidance from SDC’s sustainability team. This has been crucial in helping us put new plans into action, and build upon our numerous existing sustainability efforts, such as the removal of single use plastics and installing our enhanced irrigation system. There can be no doubt that sport’s environmental impact is significant, but we are starting to see progress. For example, Formula One intends to make all Grand Prixs fully sustainable by 2025, whilst the World Athletics Federation aims to be carbon neutral by 2030. Golf, too, can be a real force for good. Golf clubs around the world can no longer sit on the bench and watch. Everyone must get on board and begin to participate; otherwise, we will soon reach the point of no return in our fight against climate change.

It isn’t game over, it’s very much GAME ON

@sentosagolfclub

We relish being the first in many sustainability projects, a ‘test bed’ for ideas that can be implemented and extended across Sentosa Island, which is why the Club is delighted to announce a new partnership with Porsche Asia Pacific. Electric vehicles (EVs) are an important part of meeting global goals on climate change. As of January 2021, there were just over 1,200 electric

vehicles, out of a total combination of 636,483 units (0.2%) in Singapore – an incredible stat, and one that has to change. We are confident that it will. Change continues apace at the Club. Many of you will have noticed the five new EV charging stations at our outdoor car park. They’ve been installed as part of Porsche Destination Charging, a global charging network available only at premium lifestyle

destinations. SGC is the first golf club in Singapore and the Southeast Asia region to join the programme, and we would like to encourage everyone to take a more sustainable approach and go electric for the good of the environment. Singapore’s target is to phase out all internal combustion engine vehicles by 2040. Sustainability is a top priority for Porsche, which aims to have 50 per cent of its vehicles sold www.sentosagolf.com

to be either fully electric or plug-in hybrid models by 2025. “By leading the charge in expanding charging infrastructure for drivers in Singapore and around the globe, we hope the adoption of electric vehicles will become more widespread,” says Henrik Dreier, Director New Business Fields at Porsche Asia Pacific. “Our goal is to become the most sustainable and recognised brand for exclusive and sports mobility in the world.” 17

NEWS FROM SENTOSA ISLAND

CARBON NEUTRAL GOAL RECEIVES BIG BOOST

SDC has stepped up its efforts to make Sentosa Island carbon neutral by 2030 by signing a significant partnership with investment company, Temasek. Decarbonising energy systems, reducing food waste and greener travel options are all key focus areas, as is increasing awareness on sustainability and sustainable practices amongst Sentosa’s visitors. One of the first steps to be taken by SDC will be to engage the island’s businesses for a carbon profiling initiative. The insights on carbon emissions will set the island-wide carbon profile baseline and subsequently guide future carbon mitigation and abatement efforts by various stakeholders on Sentosa.

DISCOVER A BETTER WAY TO EXPLORE WITH GOGREEN From 13 March to 6 June 2021, our Island Partner, GoGreen, will be extending its offerings beyond Sentosa with a new pop-up bicycle and kick-scooter rental store on St John’s Island – plus you can also explore Lazarus Island and Eagle Bay Beach via a connecting bridge. This is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the rustic atmosphere of these beautiful islands. Choose to take in the scenic views, enjoy a workout, or simply relax and have a picnic on the beach. GoGreen’s pop-up store will operate daily 11am4pm, Fridays to Sundays.

NEW ROAD TO AND FROM TANJONG BEACH

ISLAND WAIVER FEE EXTENDED

With effect from Wednesday 24 March 2021, please note that motorists heading to, or leaving Tanjong Beach are to use a new connecting road located off Artillery Avenue. This new route will permanently replace the former access road to facilitate the development of the new Raffles Villas. As directional signage will be placed in the vicinity, do slow down as you familiarise yourself with the layout.

We are pleased to share the news that Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) will extend the waiver of island admission fees for all guests until 30 September 2021. Just to remind everyone, free island admission will apply via Sentosa Express (via the VivoCity Station), and for those travelling by car through all gantries at the Sentosa Gateway. Existing ways to enter Sentosa for free will also continue to be in place, including via the Sentosa Boardwalk, SBS Transit’s Service 123 (only distance-based bus fare applies), as well as through cycling.

RULES FOCUS 90-DEGREE RULE ENSURES GOOD HEALTH

The 90-degree rule has been brought in to protect the conditioning of the Club's two championship courses

The 90 degree RULE is not a suggestion.

this is 90º ball B

you can walk this far

ball A

NO!

Please do your part and observe the 90-degree rule

Have you ever noticed how the grass and weeds in an untended garden seem to grow so well and healthily? One of the reasons is because there is no downward pressure on them to impede their growth, like being stepped on. Similarly, the grass on our fairways and rough would grow more healthily if downward pressure were not exerted on them. Of course, this is just not possible, so we must look at other ways to reduce damage to our turf, which allows it to heal properly. One of the ways to maintain its health is to observe the 90-degree rule for golf carts. This has been introduced at SGC to strike a balance between the convenience of buggy use against damage to the turf. The 90-degree rule is different from “free roaming”. With the former, a buggy travels along the cart path until it is alongside a golf ball and then

enters the course at a 90-degree angle towards the ball. After the shot is played, the buggy then exits the course in the same perpendicular manner to return to the cart path until it is alongside the ball again. Free roaming, meanwhile, as the name suggests, implies that the buggy can travel freely on the fairway and rough without restrictions. With the exceptionally high utilization of our courses now, we see over 400 golfers a day when both courses are open. You can understand how difficult it is to keep our grass healthy so that members can always enjoy world class conditions, and why allowing the free roaming of buggies is not feasible. The health of the fairways is our priority and to do this, we require the co-operation of you, our members, to adhere to the 90-degree rule. It is not impossible to envisage a scenario where we restrict buggies to the cart path if too much damage is done to our fairways. Thank you for helping to maintain our beautiful courses.

TANJONG TIPS Believe it or not, our immensely talented member Amanda Tan once thought The Tanjong was easy. That was a while ago. The Singapore golfer freely admits she was not quite right about that, and she is only too happy to share a few strategy secrets for playing what’s become one of her favourite courses. Overleaf, Amanda picks out two holes where sound strategy is required — so bear this in mind next time you are out there…

INSTRUCTION

TANJONG TIPS Hole 5 (Par 5, Index 3) Off the blue tees, we must take note of the trees on the right close to the tee box as we try to miss it right. For the second shot, it is crucial that you’re aware that the centre left portion of the fairway slopes quite significantly to the water, more so than it looks. Up ahead, and regardless of where the pin is, you should be happy to find the centre of the putting surface. Tidy up for par and its job done and onto the next.

Hole 11 (Par 4, Index 2) For anyone who tends to miss the odd tee shot left, it would not be such a disaster here, as it gives you a clearer shot into the green. It might sound negative when we talk about where it might be ‘good’ to miss, but it is something all good golfers are aware of. On the second shot, for a front and centre pin, missing short is no bad thing. If you miss short when the pin is at the back, the up slope is quite big, therefore you will find yourself with a tricky two putt.

Please note the Out of Bounds zones referred to on page 21 of Rules Focus in the last issue are ‘Internal Out of Bounds zones’. Members may refer to the notice boards in the changing rooms for more information.

AGRONOMY CORNER

A WORK OF SCIENCE AND ART Every major tournament presents unique challenges, none more so than now when we find ourselves in the midst of a pandemic, and the SGC team has been adapting to the new environment to prime The Tanjong for the HSBC Women’s World Championships (WWC). In normal years, SGC would run our golf courses at 65% occupancy to give them time to recover. Additionally, it allows our Agronomy crew the time and space to perform crucial maintenance activities. However, The Tanjong has been operating at almost 100% capacity every day since June 2020 when the Circuit Breaker was lifted. As a result, we’ve had to adapt in a number of ways:

• Divots are almost double to what we are used to seeing, leading to increased fertility applications to push the plant to recover and fill in. • Ball marks have increased. We have had to adjust mowing heights and fertility applications to allow the plant to handle the high traffic, wear patterns and ball marks better. With higher fertility, we have also had to core more frequently. • Traffic stress on the turf has accelerated. The rough and fairways have become damaged and grass stops growing at times. • Compaction is also elevated. With higher compaction the plant struggles

to get the air required to be healthy. Plant stress, fatigue and diseases become prevalent. Normally we’d start tournament preparations three to four months in advance, adjusting mowing heights a little each week and later each day on putting surfaces, and rolling the surfaces to build faster green speeds in the lead up to the tournament. One of the last steps is reducing plant food, so that the plant nearly stops growing, to maintain a consistent pace throughout the tournament. There is a limited time the plant can handle all the reduced mowing, rolling, dehydration and starvation, before they crash. Factor in Mother Nature and diseases, on top of day-to-day golf traffic, and it is truly a combination of science and art to ensure tournament level course conditions. The HSBC WWC date has been an unknown for most of the year, so we’ve had to remain nimble on our feet planning goals so course conditions are at their peak for tournament week. The team has been up to the challenge, and we hope that you will watch this year’s great competition and identify with our never-ending journey to thrive and search for the perfect golf playing conditions for everyone to enjoy.

It is truly a combination of science and art to ensure tournament level course conditions.

18 Holes With…

INBEE PARK In the latest issue of 18 Holes With…we sat down with two-time HSBC Women’s World Champion, seven-time Major winner, and current Olympic Gold medalist Inbee Park, to discuss her love for Singapore and how much she is looking forward to playing The Tanjong again… At what age did you take up golf? 10 years old. Dad wanted me to start earlier but golf didn’t look fun, so I delayed it by a few years. What is your best ever round and where was it? Shooting 66 in the final round at the Olympics to win gold was special! My best ever round was a 61 in Canada. What was it like to represent your country and win at the 2016 Olympics? Amazing. An honour to represent my country and a once in a life time experience. Will you be defending your title in Tokyo later this year? I need to qualify first and that is a very important goal for me this year. Do you have a favourite from your seven Major wins? They have all been very special for different reasons.

What has been your favourite ever win? Winning gold at the Olympics. Who would make up your favourite fourball? Whomever you can have fun with no matter what happens on the course. Who is the greatest golfer of all time? Tough question. There are so many players to mention from Arnold Palmer to Annika Sorenstam, Tiger Woods, or Seri Pak. What is your favourite club in the bag? My Hybrid, XXIO X, (23°), Graphite Design Tour AD GT UT-65 for its accuracy, and putter as always! What is your greatest moment in golf? Same again, winning gold at the Olympics. Have you ever achieved a hole-inone? I’ve had around 10 holes in one

— I even had one in my practice round for the Olympics. What is the greatest advice you have ever been given? Enjoy what you are doing, and the hard work won’t feel like work at all. What advice would you give to a young player looking to go pro in the women’s game? Be patient and try to best understand the game before you become pro. Which of your two wins is your favourite – 2015 or 2017? 2015 because going bogey free for 72 holes on The Serapong still gives me goose bumps. How do you rate your chances going into this year’s tournament? Any time you have won somewhere you feel extra confident. I’m looking forward to returning and doing my best to win for a third time. What do you like about playing The Tanjong? I feel very comfortable playing the course and love the views — the course always looks stunning and in perfect condition. How would you describe The Tanjong in three words? Beautiful, challenging and immaculate. What is your favourite thing about Singapore? Everything – the food, people, atmosphere, golf course, and city.
