HOLIDAY MARKETING IDEAS

It’s clear that the holidays will be different for many restaurants. Depending on what phase a state or area is in coupled with patrons’ concerns about dining in a traditional setting — this holiday season, it is time to creatively pivot. Here are a few ideas to market your operation for the upcoming Holidays.

HOW TO RUN A SUCCESSFUL RESTAURANT MARKETING CAMPAIGN 1.

Start early (but not too early). Start posting online and sending out email blasts about three weeks out from the holiday. If potential guests like what they see, they’ll lock in their decision early – but you’ll have to keep reminding them with additional posts and emails. Ramp up your social media posting frequency the closer it gets to the holiday itself, providing more details and doing a countdown to get folks excited.

2.

Use enticing images. Don’t just tell your audience what specials you’ll be running for the holiday – show it to them! We all know people eat with their eyes first, so grab their attention with a high-quality photo of your most-ordered menu items.

3.

Hit all possible marketing sources. Promote your holiday menu wherever possible so it gets in front of the most people – on social media, your website, to your email list, on signage in front of your restaurant, and more. If you have some money to put into advertising, try reaching new customers in your area with Facebook ads.

4.

Partner with another business. While this isn’t a “must” for every campaign, partnering with another local business on a holiday package deal will get the word out to more customers.

MARKETING IDEAS FOR YOUR OPERATION Gift cards are another way for customers to spread holiday cheer

$

to others. Customers spend an average of $59 more than the value of the gift card when they redeem them, so they can generate additional revenue, too. E-gift cards are a fast, convenient gift for family and friends near and far. Customers can purchase online, without having to visit your physical location.

Gift a dessert. What's better than receiving a cake or a pie for the

Holidays? Create a unique and festive packaging you can sell with your desserts for customers to buy and gift to their loved ones. Make sure your packaging has your information on it so the receiver knows where to come back for more!

Meal Packages. If you suspect that holiday gatherings will be

smaller this year with fewer people traveling and some customers only celebrating with those in their household, you could create customizable meal packages available to go. Restaurants tend to promote holiday dinner menus, but some customers might enjoy a festive holiday brunch available for takeout or delivery.

Curbside Pickup. Contactless pickup and/or delivery is a great way to grab those customers who do not feel comfortable walking into a physical building. Designate a few parking spots near the entrance for these patrons with a detailed sign on how to receive their order upon arriving.

Take & Bake Meals. This is great option for those that are hosting

a Holiday gathering that don't want to go through all of the steps of preparing a meal, but want to be able to cook everything on their time. Have everything in oven-ready packages with detailed cooking steps for each dish.

Partner with local businesses. Get together with a local small business and come up with packages you can sell as gifts. Examples of partnerships: Florist: Sell a date night with a gift card and bouquet of flowers. Local non-profit: Sell a meal package that donates a percentage of the proceeds to something like the soup kitchen or the Angel Tree. Event Venue: What's better than not having to cook for the Holidays? Not having to cook AND not having to decorate! Reach out to your local event venue to see if they would want to provide a Holiday decorating package that your customers could pick up with their meal. One stop shop for hosting Holiday dinners!

HOLIDAY APPETIZERS For appetizers, stay away from fried foods that turn sad during travel and re-heating. Focus appetizers on dips, spreads, smoked salmon with flavored cream cheese, cheese boards, charcuterie boards, boiled or steamed seafood, baked oysters, and oyster patties to name a few.

CENTER OF THE PLATE Offer entrees that are whole pieces of protein rather than fabricated. Because of moisture retention in the larger piece of muscle, a whole ribeye travels and re-heats better than a cut steak. Racks of lamb, racks of veal, pork crown roasts, suckling pig, prime rib, and herb crusted tenderloin are good protein examples. Understanding that the consumer will be warming these center of the plate items, consider cooking 50% of the way and providing detailed cooking and holding directions for the best eating experience.

Sauces for these entrees are the professional flavor boost the home cook cannot easily create, so offer pairings. Focus on glace sauces, which are reductions that intensify flavors, along with chutney, aioli, relish, compote, and salsa
