(MS) - Interior designers have a knack for pulling together furniture and accessories to create rooms with widespread appeal. But not every homeowner has the resources to hire a professional to help turn their interior from drab to fab. Fortunately, it doesn’t always take a pro to transform a home’s interior. The key to creating a beautiful room is planning. Designers do it and so should you. Measure the dimensions of the room and create a sketch of the area using graph paper or computer software. Be sure to plot any windows or doors on the drawing so that you will be aware of obstacles. Homeowners unsure of what they want should browse through magazines or pictures on the Web for inspiration. Search for key phrases that describe your design style, such as Tuscan, farmhouse, country, colonial, etc. Then read up on the components of these styles that define it. This will help you select items that fit with the style. Once a particular style has been chosen, create a design board just like the professionals. Cut out swatches of fabric, select paint swatches, find magazine pictures that fit with your goal and arrange them on a piece of poster

If you are unsure of colors, see which shades were used in the inspiring picture and determine if it will coordinate with your home. When designing, identify or create a focal point in the room and build off of that. This may be a large window, fireplace, or even the entertainment center if it’s a family room. Place furniture around the focal point and then move outward.
It’s also important to keep scale in mind. Large walls or tall ceilings will create plenty of wall space. A small print or wall hanging will be lost in such an area. Be sure to choose furnishings and accessories that fit with the scale of the room. In other words, a huge sectional may overpower a small living room. When choosing colors, make sure they are cohesive. Research the color wheel

that artists use to help with designing the room. Some colors are complementary or opposites and still work together. Homeowners nervous about color should choose a color from fabric or furniture and use a few different shades of the same color in the room. Select an accent color that can be used on trim or as a spot of color on a pillow or accessory. When plotting wall hangings or other decor, odd numbers often look more pleasing to the eye. Experiment with different sizes of framed artwork or different shaped accessories for visual appeal. For example, a few rectangular shaped items with a circular clock and a conical flower vase can mix it up in the room. This is where looking at magazine layouts can be extremely helpful. Many stores sell items that mimic the look of higher-priced items. When copying a designer room, select pieces that are similar, but not necessarily the same brands. Consider shopping at second-hand stores or antique shops for discounted pieces. With a little new fabric or stain, many items can look like new again. Shopping online also may enable shoppers to find items more readily and see how they look in staged rooms. When designing, it never hurts to think outside of the box. Items that were intended for outside may work well inside as well. Hanging lanterns or plant stands could be put to use in a rustic room. Save some money by making some items yourself. For instance, if you cannot find a particular throw pillow or drapery that fits with your style, go to a fabric store and purchase fabric to make your own. Decorating doesn’t have to cost a fortune or look like you pieced odd items together. By following the guidelines of a designer room and selecting lower-priced items that mimic the shape and scale of similar accessories, it’s possible for any homeowner to create a room for less.

Cost According to the Do It Yourself Web site, concrete can cost up to 45 percent more than asphalt to install generally. But if the price of crude oil is high, and crude oil is a component of asphalt composition, then the asphalt could be more expensive. The best way to compare prices is to get a few estimates for each material. Depending on climate, both asphalt and concrete can be prone to cracking. In many cases, it is more expensive to

Concrete vs. asphalt driveways Many homes come with a driveway. Whether leading to a garage or not, the driveway is a convenient place to park one or more cars. If a driveway is in need of repair or replacement, owners often choose between asphalt or concrete. There are certain factors that come into play when making a decision. More often than not, cost is a main consideration and frequently the driving force behind any driveway decisions that are made. Until you realize all of the subtleties behind these materials, you may not be able to make an informed decision.

(MS) -- The trend of using decorative glass to create dramatic entryways continues to grow as homeowners choose to stay in their homes longer and remodel for extended personal enjoyment. Adding a “touch of glass” with a new front entry door can be one of the most effective and economical ways to enhance a home’s curb appeal. Beyond aesthetics, a new entry with decorative glass can add value to the home. According to a national home valuation study conducted by Therma-Tru(R) and TNS, an independent research organization, simply installing a new entryway door has been shown to increase the perceived value of a home by more than $24,000 on average. mend cracks in a concrete driveway than in one made from asphalt. Weather compatibility If you live in a very hot climate, you may want to choose a concrete driveway. Asphalt tends to get soft in the heat, which can contribute to grooves and dents in the surface. Whereas concrete driveways work better in warm climates than cold ones. Salt used on roadways can damage concrete, and cold-weather shrinkage can lead to cracks in the concrete. Rate of repair Despite the cost, some people choose concrete driveways because they tend to have a longer life with less maintenance required. A concrete driveway can last as long as 50 years. Asphalt driveways can last around 30 years, but if they’re not properly maintained, may start deteriorating after just a few years. That’s because asphalt is petroleumbased and very elastic. If left to dry out without adequate sealing, the driveway can become brittle and start to wear away. Concrete driveways can be sealed to preserve their quality, but most people assoR0011620137

ciate sealing with asphalt. This should be done every 5 years or so to prevent the breakdown of the oils in the asphalt. The first application of sealant should be applied no sooner than 8 to 12 months after installation to allow the asphalt to properly cure. Asphalt that is ready for sealing will start to take on a grayish hue. Staining A light-colored concrete can be stained easily from fluid leaks from the underside of a car or leaves. It may take powerwashing to remove the stain adequately. However, stains are much less visible on dark asphalt. But asphalt can do its own type of staining. The oils released from the asphalt can stick to the undersides of shoes and be carried indoors. If you don’t remove your shoes upon entering, these oils may eventually discolor vinyl or tile floors or get imbedded into the carpeting. Variety What you see is what you get with asphalt. There really are no decorative options -it’s merely a simple and practical driveway material. On the other hand, concrete can be colored or stamped to provide designs and aesthetic appeal. If you desire a higher-end driveway, then concrete may be right for you. Both driveway materials will do what they’re supposed to -- providing a durable surface on which to park your car. If you’re looking for low installation costs, then you may want to choose asphalt. For the utmost in durability, perhaps concrete is best.

Equipping the ‘Man Cave’
Guys who are gaming enthusiasts can outfit their man caves with a pool table and favorite arcade games.. A room in the house devoted entirely to male interests is becoming much more popular in recent years. The “man cave,” as it’s come to be called, can shun the decorating style of the rest of the house, and decor may be all the choice of its visionary creator. The man’s domain is no longer relegated to the garage or a dusty corner in the basement. Today’s guys are devoting an entire room to a particular interest of their choice. Some prefer a work-out room with equipment that rivals the nearest gym. Others want to deck-out the room in surround sound and a projection screen to create the ultimate home-theater experience. According to a recent survey by ServiceMagic, a business that connects homeowners with contractors, about 40
percent of respondents said that they have a man cave or room in their home and another 13 percent said the male domain is in the planning or construction phase. No matter what the man cave will entail, there are some steps guys can take to ensure the plans go smoothly. * Create the theme. This is a chance for the man to dream up any design style he prefers. Maybe the walls will be covered in sports memorabilia. Perhaps he desires a dark, solitary space. The room can also be a mix and match of any style, as long as it’s the desire of the guy. * Tech it out. Chances are the focal point of the man cave will be a big-screen television. If budget allows, go for the biggest and best TV with all the peripheral equipment. If budget is a bit more modest,
shop around for a deal and see what can be picked up from swap Web sites or online bidding sites. Also, check out the classified section of the newspaper to find local deals on equipment being unloaded by others for a steal. * Furnish the place. The cornerstone piece of furniture could be a large leather sectional to fit many guy friends. Or, if the man cave is to be a solitary spot, a comfortable recliner. Remember to also include a small refrigerator for refreshments. * Lock it up. For those who want to keep the man cave offlimits, install a lock to keep unwanted visitors out. * Enjoy the space. The man cave is a place where guys can kick back and relax and do what they prefer -- something that may be off limits in the rest of the house.

Think “FRESH” When Selecting Roof Colours (MS) -- Thinking about a new roof for your home? Then think “FRESH.” That’s the advice national color expert Kate Smith recommends for homeowners considering a new roof. “The acronym FRESH stands for fixed features, regional colors, environment, style of home and historic colors,” says Smith, president of Sensational Color. “Considering these five elements can help you select the perfect roof color.”
According to Smith, a southwestern style home in the desert may look best with a slate roof comprised of a Sonora blend of medium and dark terracotta colors gently mixed in with light and dark clay colors. Or, West Coast homeowners seeking the feel of real wooden shakes, but the advantages of fire-resistant polymer shakes, can benefit from an Abruzzo color blend of light, medium and dark mountain tones.
FRESH Approach
solid slate black Bellaforte roof ... or with a Milano blend of grays with a tinge of purple.
* Environment and Surroundings -- Is your home in a rural setting or a downtown? Are you near the waterfront, a desert or a mountain? Temper the colors to complement your surroundings and the natural colors around you. The goal is to stand out while still fitting in. Consider a Mountain blend of multi-width shake tiles that complement wooded settings or a Chesapeake blend of oceanfront grays for coastal area homes.
* Regional Colors -- Each region of the country has prevalent colors based on the housing styles, available materials, natural surroundings and the quality of light. Determine the colors in your area (mostly those you see a great deal of on other homes) to stick with regional colors.
* Style of the Home -- Remember that colors support the home’s style and architecture, not the other way around. So, determine your home’s style (are you a Ranch? Tudor? Art Deco? Greek Revival?) and then research to determine what colors are
* Fixed Features -- These are the permanent design elements of the home that need to be considered a constant feature of the house, such as the foundation, partial stone or brick facades, pathways and retaining walls. Each feature may be of a different mate-

rial, but they usually will have a common color or color cast. Once you identify that common color, you can find a roof tile with a similar color or undertone that will work well for the overall home. For a home with slate tile walkway in shades of gray, Smith recommends a DaVinci Slate Castle Gray combination of three tones of gray in a slate blend. most associated with your style of home. For a Craftsman style home, Smith recommends considering a natural looking shake roof in a New Cedar or Weathered Gray color. And, while you can’t go wrong with an elegant solid black roof, she recommends softening the appeal of the roof by considering a combination of neutral tones, such as medium tan, dark gray and light stone to create a warmer roof appearance. * Historic Colors -- If you live in a historic district, check for local guidelines and/or restrictions on adding colors to your home. More traditional colors, such as whites, browns, and shades of blue and green, work well on historical homes. Match them up with a Tahoe blend of shake roofing tiles with five varying shades of brown and you have a stunning house decor. Smith suggests “playing” online with the free DaVinci Color Design Program to determine the color roof that works best for your home. There are roofing colors and 28 standard color blends available at www.davinciroofscapes.com to make the roof color decision easy for everyone.

Why not get some professional advice and a chance to win a commission-free listing by participating in W Network’s ALL FOR NOTHING?. Ottawa’s very own real estate and design TV series is searching for 6 more lucky homeowners to participate in the second season’s remaining episodes to be filmed this fall. “We are looking for homes that are in need of some major TLC to get ready to hit the real estate market for maximum value” says series producer, Lisa Nault. The types of projects typically tackled by homeowners on the show are kitchen updates, bathroom makeovers, flooring upgrades and curb appeal. By focusing on these most important areas of the home first, all the renovation projects tackled on ALL FOR NOTHING? follow a ‘biggest bang for your buck’ approach. “For every dollar you are asked to spend on home improvements you will make three dollars on the sale of your home” says host and real estate agent Paul Rushforth. “That’s how we’ve had such high increases to house values on the show.” Along with expert advice from Paul Rushforth, participating homeowners receive detailed design plans for multiple areas of their home from award-winning designer, Penny Southam, “I really focus on cost-effective solutions when creating design concepts for ALL FOR NOTHING? It’s amazing to see the transformations that our homeowners are able to achieve in just two weeks on small budgets!”

The homeowner with the highest property value increase wins a commission-free listing from Paul Rushforth Real Estate, saving thousands of dollars on the sale of their home. All the renovations must be completed in a two week time period. Homeowners are encouraged to spend as little as possible and also to off-set their costs by fundraising, bartering, borrowing and rallying friends and family to help. “Your show is the only reason we were able to make enough money to buy our new, beautiful house. I am so grateful to all of you at All For Nothing?!” says Episode 29 homeowner Alison Gerow. “It was such a great experience and I never would have been able to rally my friends to help me as much as they did without you guys. I recommend the show to everyone I know. Two weeks really changed the rest of my life! I now have a beautiful home that we can stay in for years to come. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!” In the episodes filmed to date, ALL FOR NOTHING? has helped participating Ottawa-area homeowners raise the values of their homes by a collective 1.5 million dollars. “In Ottawa, property values increase around 5% annually,” Rushforth says. “On All For Nothing? we’ve seen increases as high as 14% in just two weeks. Home design trends: Choose Gus’s Kitchen Sensual kitchen spaces and Bath for all your (MS) -- According to design experts, the latest hot trend in kitchen decor is the use of different textures, colors and surfaces to create a sensual sanctuary that engages all of our five senses -- sight, hearing, smell, taste, and most of all touch. In her book, “Sensual Home,” Elle Decoration editor Ilse Crawford explains this recent interior design movement as creating private havens with your decor to soothe and enhance each of the senses. “As modern life threatens to become increasingly standardized, suburbanized, unnatural, and uniformly lit, the home is, for many of us, the last bastion of the senses,” she writes. This is why she recommends we tune our homes to involve all of our senses and “restore the balance between mind and body.” In fact, homeowners were already creating these sanctuaries in other rooms of their homes, like the master bedroom and bathroom. Master bedrooms featured sensual silk bedding, cozy comfort duvets, seductive colours and lighting while master bathrooms hosted soothing sensuous spa-like environments created to relax and unwind from the outside world. Up until recently, designers and consumers did not afford these same sensual attributes to their kitchens, Crawford explained. “Over the past 40 years, most of the attention in design has been paid almost exclusively to the way things look rather than to the way they feel.” That has changed with the arrival of sensual kitchen de-

There’s a new hardwood floor so healthy and so ecofriendly that it actually was awarded the “Children and School certification” by worldrenowned standards organization Greenguard. Follow the 3 ‘P’s of home renovation Every home project begins with an idea and ends with the culmination of the job. In between, there are three main components of an improvement project that can mean the difference between success and frustration: Planning, permits and protection. Planning The initial stage of a renovation is the planning stage. Planning is when a homeowner works through the concept of the project and determines what is neces-
sary to complete the task. Many people find it helpful to write out plans and draw up the concept on paper. This doesn’t require expensive architectural software. A simple piece of graph paper plotted with measurements and a sketch is often sufficient for small projects. If the job will be expansive and require an architect or engineer, he or she will often provide a technical drawing. If the project focuses more on decorating than building, some find it helpful to
create a design board. This is where fabric swatches, paint color samples, pictures of furniture and accessories, and any other components of the room are put together. Having a design board enables the homeowner to go to the store with board in tow and match up items to things in the store. Another part of the planning stage is establishing a budget and determining the project’s financing. It can be helpful to make a list of all income and expens-
es and find out how much funding is left over for a project. When getting estimates on the work, whether it will be done by a contractor or a DIY project, the homeowner should then make a list of approximate costs (rounding up) and then compare it against the available funds. Permits Many projects, especially those involving building, demolition, electrical work, or mold remediation, require permits issued by

Quality workmanship at competitive prices At The Cabinet Shop, getting that kitchen or bathroom of your dreams is just a simple phone call away. The business, a 2,000 square foot custom manufacturing facility of kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, is located five kilometers west of North Gower at 3435 Roger Stevens Drive. Owners Deborah Gervais, an accredited kitchen and bath designer; and Alex Clayton, cabinet maker extraordinaire have been at the Roger Stevens Drive location since 2006. Collectively, they have more than 40 years of combined experience in the manufacturing, construction and design industries. “We offer custom cabinetry and millwork at very reasonable prices,” notes Gervais.
“Our pieces are of exceptional quality and are all done by hand… and our price points are very reasonable considering what we do for it.” With The Cabinet Shop, clients get that one-on-one experience and Gervais said she and Clayton take pride in their work and will cater to their clients’ specific needs. “Everything we do is built and set to the space you have, so it all fits properly,” she said. Interior design services can help clients plan their project (and choose the proper finishes, hardware and accessories) and The Cabinet Shop also uses 20-20 design software to produce detailed three-dimensional renderings of what your new kitchen our bathroom could look like.
“We go to your home and measure up the space, with a free consultation by appointment. The experience is much more personalized that way,” Gervais stated. All cabinetry is created on-site in the manufacturing facility, which is equipped with a variety of machinery, including a complete countertop cutting station. Another unique feature to the woodworking shop is the self-contained spray booth. Its state-of-the-art finishing equipment allows The Cabinet Shop to provide custom staining to their clients as well. “Everything comes in here (manufacturing facility), we build it and finish it here and then ship it out. Everything is done in-house,” Gervais commented. They also offer a variety of wood, thermofoil and laminate doors from suppliers including Richelieu, Premoule and Caron, in addition to

local suppliers. Laminate post-formed counter and bar tops from Premoule are also available, as are counter and bar tops in materials such as granite, solid surface and engineered stone.
The Cabinet Shop operates on a by appointment basis only and is not a walk-in retail outlet. Their facility is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and evening and Saturday appointments are also available upon request. to be made and a re-inspection will be scheduled. Should a home be put on the market, all permits may need to be on file or in the homeowners’ possession in order for a certificate of occupancy to be issued to the new buyer. Failure to have permits can hold up the process or result in fines. Protection Homeowners about to begin a project also need to emphasize safety. There are a number of things that can be on hand to make a work environment safer. These include: * Eye protection: This is especially important when working with flying debris, cutting items, mixing caustic chemicals, etc. * Respirator or face mask: Cover the nose or mouth when there is dust or debris in the air that can enter the lungs. When working with toxic fumes, such as when using spray paints or chemical lubricants, a respirator can offer clean air. * Boots: Proper footwear ensures protection should an item fall on the foot or when walking where nails or other sharp items are located. * Fire extinguisher: A fire extinguisher should be nearby in the event of a mishap. * First aid kit: An abrasion or cut may occur, requiring prompt care. * Gloves: When the hands need to be protected or extra traction on surfaces is required, gloves can be a necessity. * Headphones: Safety headphones can protect the ears against loud, consistent noises from power equipment and tools. * Locks: A locked cabinet can store tools, paints, chemicals, and other improvement supplies so that young children or pets won’t have access. When homeowners take the time to plan, obtain permits, and secure the needed protection for a job, they help ensure a safer job that is done correctly.

the town, province or city in which the work will be taking place. The purpose of permits and subsequent inspections is often questioned by homeowners looking to circumvent the system. However, building permits are required to ensure public safety, health and welfare as they are affected by building construction, structural strength, zoning, and code requirements. In essence, building permits are how the government regulates safety and protects both current and future residents of the property. In many cases, homeowners will need to visit the municipal building in their respective towns and apply for a permit. The permit may not immediately be issued. Oftentimes, there is a waiting period during which the project’s legality and safety is examined. Once the project is approved, the applicant will be able to file for the actual permit(s). There is usually a fee or fees for permit application, which covers any clerical work. Work should not begin until a permit is received, and then the permit generally has to be placed in plain sight, such as in a window of the building. Depending on building codes, inspections of the work may need to take place after all of the project is completed or during certain phases. For example, the building of a deck may require inspections after footings are installed and secured, and before the upper portions of the decking materials are attached. If an inspection takes place afterward, the inspector will be looking for key code issues to determine whether the work was completed successfully. If a contractor was used, he or she may have to be present at the time of the inspection. If the work passes, an approval will be given and put on record. If the work fails, applicable repairs will have

Create a Fresh Look for Your Home (MS) -- Before the holidays bring family celebrations and visiting friends to your home, give your home a new look and improve its comfort level. Check out the suggestions below, make your project list, and then go to Woodcraft for the tools and accessories to get the job done. “Put safety first,” cautions Scott Phillips, host of The American Woodshop. “Before you begin your first project, make sure you have eye, ear and breathing protection available and then follow the manufacturer’s directions for all the tools and products you use. Have a first-aid kit and a phone handy, and enlist help for the heavyduty work.” Entrance, Windows & Floors -- Give your entrance an easy update with a new door or add color and new hardware to your existing one. Install new windows that are attractive, reduce heating and cooling costs, and are easy to maintain. And consider installing a hardwood floor in at least one of your rooms -possibly the entryway and/or the living/family room. Kitchen & Dining Areas -- Apply stain or color to your kitchen cabinets and replace hinges and pulls or knobs to brighten your “home cafe.” If your cabinets have seen better days, install new ones -- either store-bought or ones you build. For a wood table and chairs, consider using a stain or topcoat to enhance the wood’s appearance or to match the color of your cabinets. Shelving & Lighting -- Adding shelving anywhere you have unused space (bedroom/bath-
room closets) will help control clutter and provide display space for your favorite photos and collectibles in living room, family room, and kitchen. Enhance cabinets and furniture with new decorative LED lighting. Living/Family Room -- Arranging furniture into “areas” will allow for varied activities simultaneously, such as conversation and watching events on television or playing games. Use plants, a bookcase or a divider to separate areas. Paint walls, hang pictures or stain wood furniture to add color. Handy Helpers from Woodcraft * Rockwell’s 3RILL 12V Lithium-Ion Cordless Drill is perfect for the drilling and driving tasks required to install doors, windows, floors, cabinets, and shelving, as well as your building projects. The tool converts easily from drill to impact driver to screwdriver. * The Milescraft Complete Door Mortise Kit makes it easy to replace interior and exterior doors without damaging the jamb or door frame. * Freeman’s 3 in 1 Flooring Nailer is the go-to tool for installing hardwood flooring. Interchangeable baseplates allow you to install 1/2” to 3/4” nail-down flooring. * General Finishes HP Polyurethane is the preferred choice for finishing floors. It is quick curing, UV resistant and urethane tough. * The Little Hand provides a support, brace or clamp whenever you need an extra hand. Use it to
mount wall cabinets above a counter or bench. It extends 16.5” to 22.8” and has 6” x 6” universal feet top and bottom for maximum support of cabinets. * General Finishes Gel Stain, available in several colors from prairie wheat to Georgian cherry, combines gel and stain in one product that is easy to apply and can be used over new wood or existing finishes as a glaze or to change or update the look of kitchen cabinets. * The Kreg Jig K4 Master System makes building a breeze. Using the jig, a saw and a drill, you can quickly make strong pocket-hole joints for all of your projects. * General Finishes Milk Paint is popular for furniture and crafts and comes in a variety of colors, such as federal blue, buttermilk yellow and sage green. * The Laurey Windsor line offers attractive knobs and pulls for cabinets and drawers. * The Woodpeckers Combo Shelf Pin Template makes drilling holes for shelf pins easy. (MS) - Oftentimes, buying a home opens up a bottomless pit of opportunities for projects and improvements. While some homeowners engage in different repairs and fix-ups out of necessity, many others like to freshen-up their spaces out of personal preference instead of need. But even the most well-intentioned projects can be waylaid if budgets are tight. What many homeowners may not realize is that there are many ways to make updates and changes to a home that do not require a major overhaul or a large price tag. The following are seven projects that won’t break the bank. 1. Move around furniture. You may be able to change the look of a room without spending any money. Interior designers know how to arrange furniture for maximum appeal, but the average homeowner can do it, too. Find a focal point in the room and angle the furniture toward it. Don’t make the focal point the television, however. Try changing the placement of chairs and sofas. Simply moving a curio cabinet from one corner to another may also make a difference. 2. Add lighting. Lighting at different levels in the room can create a vibrant impact. Many homeowners mistakenly put in a couple of table lamps and think that will be adequate. However, properly illuminating a room means varying the lighting to create different moods at different times. Plus, more light can make a room feel more welcoming. 3. Add new pillows or drapes. Changing a few aspects of a room can give it an entirely new look. If you want

Throw pillows are accessories that can easily and inexpensively change the look of a space. to add a splash of color but don’t know what to do, think about incorporating some new throw pillows or change the curtains. An accessory here and there in a bright color also can incorporate a new hue without it being overwhelming. 4. Change knobs or small accents. Give a room a new look by focusing on the small details. Switch out cabinet knobs for something updated and modern. Take inventory of wall outlets and light switches and think about selecting new ones that coordinate with your home decor. 5. Use plants. Empty corners or spots you’re not certain how to fill may benefit from a plant. Plants are inexpensive ways to add instant color and visual appeal to a room. Plus, having live plants can help improve indoor air by filtering out contaminants. A home with plants also feels more cozy. 6. Hang new wall art. It may be time to look at your photos and artwork and make a few adjustments. Finding new prints to hang could instantly
change a room’s ambience. And you needn’t spend a lot of money on professional photography, either. Grab your camera and take a few close-up shots of flowers or take in a landscape scenery. Many of today’s home printers can produce professional-quality prints in minutes. 7. Try a new coat of paint. After you’ve exhausted other avenues, choosing a new paint color may be the new look you desire. Painting is one of the least expensive yet most dramatic methods of changing a home’s interior. With dozens of hues to choose from, and new apps that enable you to take snapshots of things in nature or in your life and match them up to a paint color, you will have scores of opportunities to explore fresh new colors for your home. When you get inspired to make improvements to the home but fear how much it may take out of your wallet, consider inexpensive tricks that can induce a big “wow” factor.

Now homeowners create their own escape by including durable acrylic block products in their bathrooms to energize the room while retaining their privacy.” Available in both operable and stationary units, acrylic block windows are 70 percent lighter in weight than installed glass block units. They come in traditional window styles along with decorative geometric styles. Frosted wave, solar and crisscross patterns molded within the block offer the most privacy in a room. The units can be installed into a standard interior door in less than an hour. Protecting the Pattern A clear protective coat, such as DRYLOK(R) WetLook Sealer is the perfect finish to protect the design from scraping of patio furniture, grease, weathering and washings. Remember to use a product that is made to be a clear protective coat, not a penetrating sealer. A penetrating sealer is designed to enter the pores of the surface and settle into the masonry. It will not penetrate the floor paint. The clear sealer is a protective measure that should be repeated every two to four years depending on the use and exposure of the surface. Bold or subtle, bright or neutral, faux painting techniques can give your floor an expensive-looking makeover that won’t break the bank.

Inspirations for Faux Painted Floors Brick and Stone Brick and stone finishes can add texture and/or color and can be effective indoors and outdoors.
Patterned and Textured Finishes For a finish that isn’t too busy, you can use paint to create subtle visual texture. With pattern, your choice is endless. Covering an entire surface is one option. Alternatively, you could paint a faux rug, perhaps with patterns inspired by oriental carpets. The most important thing to remember is to follow the proper preparation and patching procedures from the product label. If you are using a pressure washer to clean the surface, do not use on a pressure setting above 1750 psi to avoid damaging the concrete. Remember concrete acts like a sponge. Pressure washing and cleaning in general may trap residual moisture in the concrete. To check for trapped moisture, tape a 12” x 12” piece of 3 mil plastic or
aluminum foil tightly on all four edges to the surface. Remove it after 24 hours. If the floor side of the plastic or foil is damp, allow additional drying and then repeat the test. It is very important not to have trapped moisture in the concrete; it is the number one reason why epoxy and latex concrete floor paints fail.
R0011626787
Planning and Preparation Before choosing a design, look carefully at your surface and space. Some designs are useful for disguising flaws in a floor. For other designs you may need to patch and smooth flawed surfaces first. You will also need to think about the traffic in the area you are painting. Is it worth doing an elaborate, time-consuming pattern in a high traffic area? Large, bold patterns may be out of scale for a small room. Equally, small, detailed patterns may get lost in large spaces.
Tiles and Mosaics Faux terra-cotta tiles are a versatile option for porches, patios and dining areas. The earthy appearance creates a warm, earthy feel and goes well with the rustic Tuscan look and matches many decors.

Livable Basements Classic Antiques and Country Decor EMC Business - If you’re looking for Canadian furniture, vintage bone china, silverware and whimsical country decor then you need to visit the Ponderosa Barn. Located on 13 acres on Fernbank road in Stittsville, the square timber barn contains a myriad of antiques that the Woodstocks (Anna & Ron) have assembled since opening in July of 2011. The couple have been interested in antiques since the early 80’s when they operated a store in Orleans. If you can’t find
what your looking for, they will do their best to find it for you. New items are always coming in from auctions or estate sales, so with regular stops at the Barn, you may discover the perfect piece for your home decor. The shop is open Thursday to Sunday (April to November) 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by appointment. Friendly service combined with country charm makes shopping at the Ponderosa Barn an enjoyable experience!
(MS) -- What would you do with an extra floor of living space in your home? Create a fitness area or home theatre for your family? Go ahead and dream a little. “Found space” in your next home can easily be obtained by having your basement made from a pre-cast insulated foundation system. “Basements can be extremely versatile rooms in the home when they’re built with both functional and decorative products,” says Matt Weber, a professional remodeler and editor of Extreme How-To magazine. “It’s important to start by constructing a warm, dry basement that allows in natural light so you don’t feel like you’re in a dungeon.” To begin the process, Weber recommends homeowners research steel-reinforced concrete Xi wall panels. Backed with 2-1/2-inches of DOW Styrofoam insulation, this system from Superior Walls creates a permanent barrier against sidewall water penetration, making the basement dampproof. “When constructing your basement, you can request pre-cut areas in the foundation system for windows,” says Weber. “That way, whether you’re working in a home office or shooting pool with friends, you can crank out acrylic block awning or hopper windows to allow in lots of light and fresh air. And, if the window opens out to an unsightly area, like a window
well, the acrylic block ‘hides’ that area while adding decorative appeal to the interior of the basement.” Available in a wide selection of sizes and styles, acrylic block windows from Hy-Lite, a U.S. Block Windows Company, also provide energy efficiency features. This way, whether your basement is used as a study zone for children or a family game room, everyone is comfortable year round. “Extra living space allows everyone to relax more at home,” says Weber. “You can designate the space as a hobby room, wine cellar, or an expansive woodshop. Just remember to decorate around the windows and accent the basement ceiling to make the room feel like a continuation of your home.” For fast and easy moulding
projects, Weber recommends adding durable Fypon urethane millwork. Lightweight miterless moulding systems require simple straight cuts and eliminate mitering hassles. Two-piece ceiling medallions can snap into place around ceiling fans. The pieces all resist insects, warping and moisture while providing instant designer appeal to the basement. “Having basement space that’s comfortable and functional makes so much sense for homeowners,” says Weber. “By making the right decisions at the time of construction to use pre-cast insulated foundation systems and other reliable products, homeowners are making a long-term investment in their family’s happiness and in the resale value of their house.”

Green ways to clean up leaves Experimenting
‘Leaf ’ them alone Unless the lawn is completely inundated with leaves, it’s alright to leave some behind. Animals preparing their winter nests or hibernation can collect leaves and use them to insulate their cozy retreats. Leaves can act as fertilizer to the lawn and also food sources to insects.
“black gold” for their vegetables and flowers can add fallen leaves to the pile as part of the secret recipe to wonderful fertilizer. What’s more, because this compost pile is likely close by, individuals won’t need to cart heavy leaves long distances for disposal. Simply wheelbarrow them over to the compost heap and dump.
to one area, but they are noisy, smelly and burn gasoline unnecessarily. Instead, look to the old-fashioned garden rake. A person won’t need to visit the gym that day because raking can burn hundreds of calories in an hour and work the muscles in the arms and shoulders effectively. For those prone to blisters, wear gloves and take frequent breaks.

Raking leaves is a green way to clean-up the landscape.
(MS) -- Color has the power to transform any room in the home. Experimenting with color can be one of the most fun aspects of decorating and design, although it can sometimes lead to second thoughts. When that happens, Valspar Paint experts tell us to first allow a couple of days to go from varying degrees of doubt, to falling in love with it. This often happens when you let the new color flirt with you for a while. If, after that,
Art projects Although you can’t use all of the leaves that fall from trees, children and adults can make home decor or art projects with some of the best of the bunch. String leaves for autumn decorating garlands on mailboxes or around doors. Press leaves between waxed paper and iron lightly to make keepsakes. Place leaves in between pieces of clear contact paper or laminating paper. Cut around the leaf design and punch a hole at the top for a hanging string. Use as a bookmark, ornament or doorknob sign. The possibilities for green uses to autumn leaves are many. This fall homeowners can be environmentally conscious in their leaf clean-up.

Much about mulch Fallen leaves can make an ideal mulch, helping to deliver nutrients to the soil during the stark, winter months. Placing shredded leaves around the base of shrubbery and trees can help insulate the root systems and nourish them. Decomposing leaves also provide food to soil insects, including earthworms.
With Color Pays Off
Rake some into bags to place around the perimeter of the home’s foundation for a little extra weatherproofing when it’s cold. Surround outdoor garden containers to insulate the soil of delicate plants that will overwinter outside or in the garage. Trees like palms or figs that need to be covered when it gets cold can get extra warmth from insulating bags of leaves.

Every fall homeowners are faced with cascades of red, purple, orange, and yellow leaves falling from the sky. Amid this rainbow of autumn activity, some people still have “green” on their minds -- as in eco-friendly ways they can embark on fall clean-up. Removing leaves from the lawn and yard is a task that few people relish. It can often mean hours spent gathering leaves and then finding ways to dispose of them. Some homeowners stack leaves at the curb in bins and bags. Others torch them in a huge bonfire. Still others scatter them to the street with a gas-powered blower. While these methods may be fast or efficient in their own ways, they are not the most environmentally friendly ways to handle leaf removal. There are some other tactics you can take. Instead of thinking about ways to remove leaves, a greener idea is to think of ways to repurpose leaves. Even though they’ve passed their prime on the limbs of trees, fallen leaves can be an essential part of the ecosystem after they’ve fallen.

Keep Your Home Exterior in Top Shape (MS) -- Feel like cheating? Forget what the inside of your home looks like for just a bit and focus on your home’s exterior. “The exterior of your home makes a lasting and daily impression on your friends and family, along with your neighbors,” says Mark Clement, professional contractor and host of MyFixItUpLife home improvement radio show. “While the weather is good, my advice is to get outside and fix up problem areas, work on the landscaping and invest in products that make your home’s exterior not only look great, but work great.” Clement, who is in the middle of an ongoing renovation of his 100-year-old home in Pennsylvania, recommends assessing your needs and then diving in on projects. “On the exterior of the home there are
three big, critical areas I recommend people evaluate every year -- the roof, the windows and the entry door. Those are key areas because, along with being visual focal points of the home, they help protect a house from severe weather. And, if you have problems with older windows, doors or roofing tiles, you’re looking at higher energy bills and growing problems that can affect your wallet longterm.” Clement offers these recommendations for keeping your home exterior in top shape: Roofing Tips: 1. Check your roof yearly (from a ladder or from a neighbor’s home with binoculars) to determine the condition of your roof. Look for problem areas, such as missing or broken shingles, along with roofing tiles that may be “flapping” in

The southern exposure weathers significantly faster than the other sides of the roof, so make sure to carefully examine this one. Also, shallower pitches weather faster than steeper pitches. So again, if your roof has a shallow pitch -- like a shed dormer -- make certain you can clearly see it to get a true indication of the condition of your roof.

3. If you’re in the market for a new roof, investigate polymer roofing tiles as a good option. These impact-resistant slate and shake tiles are man-made in a wide variety of colors. Some tiles, like those from DaVinci Roofscapes(R) that Clement chose for his home, have a 50year limited warranty and are ideal for all types of weather conditions, including hurricanes and hail. 4. Since the installation of a new roof exceeds the capabilities of most homeowners, make sure to research and hire a professional roofer. Check to make sure your roofer is insured, licensed and certified. Ask for a written job estimate and references along with warranty information for both the roof you select and his installation services. Entry Door Tips: 1. If you can see light around your main entry door from the inside, the door is hard to close or lock, or the door itself is warped, it’s time to consider a new door. 2. Even if you can’t see light, air may be moving through gaps in the weather stripping at a surprising rate. On a very cold or hot day, hold the back of your hand an inch or so away from the bottom and perimeter of your door. If you can feel air moving or a significant cold spot, that’s a signal your existing door could benefit from
better sealing. 3. Determine what role you would like an entry door to play on your home’s exterior. Do you want it to be a focal point with a splash of color? Is it important that you have decorative glass in the door system? Will you need vented sidelites to allow more light and air into your home? Search the web for “Door Designer” and “My Saved Door” online tools to help visualize how a new door will look on your home. 4. Think about the weather conditions your home’s door faces along with your energy bills. If either run to the extreme, consider replacing your entryway with a high-performance fiberglass door (which has four times more insulation than wood doors). You can also request features such as the Tru-Defense(R) Door System from Therma-Tru Doors that features enhanced weatherstripping, corner seal pad, door bottom sweep and profiled sill that all work together to provide strength and stability in your entry door. Window Tips: 1. Evaluate the functionality and decorative appeal of your current windows. If you have condensation between glass panes, the windows are hard to open or close, your energy bills are soaring or if there are drafts coming in around the window units, then it’s time to seriously
consider replacement windows. 2. Vinyl framed windows are the category of windows with the highest growth rate in the country. Why? These frames are extremely energy-efficient and some of the best have fusion-welded corners and multichambered construction. Plus, maintenance hassles are so low you’ll forget the horrors of rotting frames, scraping and repainting that come with wood windows. 3. Investigate your window options and stick with a national manufacturer that can stand behind a long-term warranty. For his renovation project, Clement selected Simonton vinyl windows. The awardwinning company impressed him with its 65-year history and return-on-investment with their ENERGY STAR(R) qualified windows. 4. Remember that a thermally-efficient window is sealed tightest when it’s locked. So, to keep your energy bills lowers, don’t just close your windows, make sure to lock them. Trim Tips: 1. If you have the opportunity to replace your entry door or windows, make sure to finish off the job with stylish window and door trim. Lightweight and easy to install, weather-resistant synthetic mouldings, shutters and entryway surrounds from Fypon(R) are a definite do-ityourself project for any homeowner. 2. Take an eagle’s eye look at your home. Most houses have louvers placed high above the attic or garage space to allow ventilation in those areas. And, most houses have wooden louvers that can rot with time. Replacing louvers with insectresistant and rot-resistant synthetic louvers can improve the home’s appearance and functionality. 3. Wrap it up. Clement recommends that if you have unsightly porch posts you can easily transform them into showpiece parts of your home by using Column Wrap Kits. The decorative synthetic pieces can be installed in less than 15 minutes around existing structural posts and columns to give an upgraded look to any home.
