PRACTICE FIRE SAFETY • Test your smoke alarms at night to see if your child will wake up and respond to the alarm. Children sleep more deeply and may not wake up. If your child does not wake up to the alarm, try an alarm where you can program your voice to alert him or her. • If you have hearing problems, use alarms with flashing strobe lights and vibration. • Plan and practice two escape routes out of each room of the house. It is important to have an alternate escape route in case one is blocked by fire.

Follow these tips to avoid the burn:
Every year more than 80% of the fires that occur in the United States take place in the home. • Fireplaces and space heaters. Keep flammable materials away from fireplaces and space heaters and stay in the room while you are using them. If you must leave, set a timer or take something with you that will remind you to return to the room. • Outlets. Don’t overload them and make sure that any cords you use are in good condition. Get rid of cords that are frayed or tattered. • Smoking. Do it outside. The simple action of going outside to smoke will keep you alert and focused. You won’t forget you are smoking, nor will you get careless and leave a cigarette smoldering in the ashtray. • Candles. One random spark
from an unattended candle is all it takes to make a whole room go up in flames in a matter of seconds. Put candles in non-tip holders away from animals and children and extinguish them when leaving the room. Carelessness is another factor that often contributes to fires. It doesn’t pay to be careless with fire. Be cautious around flames and follow these safety tips: • Keep extinguishers near all heat sources. Read the manufacturer’s instructions and know how to use them. Pay close attention to the expiration dates and purchase new fire extinguishers as needed. • Install smoke alarms. Don’t assume the smell of smoke will alert you to a fire, especially if you’re sleeping. Place smoke alarms on each level of your home
and outside sleeping areas and test them monthly to make sure the batteries are still working. If you are hard of hearing, consider purchasing a smoke alarm system with strobe lights and a vibrating pad. • Create an escape route. Be prepared for the unthinkable by planning an escape route from every room with at least two exits and practicing it often. Purchase rope ladders for second-story rooms and place them near the windows. Keep a flashlight and any other aids you might need to escape quickly, such as eyeglasses or a cane, by your bedside. The more you know about fire prevention and the more prepared you are in the event of a fire, the better off you’ll be. Get busy and learn everything you can.
