One step, one race, after the other by Jason Groth

jgroth@perhamfocus.com

The 2015 running season kicked off early in Perham, with the annual running of the Freeze Your Face 5K on Feb. 7. That event was one of many road races that take place in the Perham community. In fact, runners have a chance to participate in nine events as part of the newly formed Perham Race Series. The series provides participants with an extra incentive to start, and then continue, running. Participants who complete six of the series’ nine events are entered into a drawing to win $500. Participants pick up a punch card at each event, and have the card punched after each event they participated in for a chance to win the cash drawing. The Perham Race Series consists of four races in June, starting with the Perham Health Mature Mile on June 6. The Mature Mile is a community event to promote wellness. The event is an untimed event for participants who are more than 60 years old. The Mature Mile loops around the Perham Living campus, as well as several community blocks. The event also consists of the Family 5K Fun Run/Walk. The Fun Run/Walk uses the community’s Wellness and Wildflower trails. “That event really features a 5K for anyone that wants to do a 5K, but then it features a mile after the 5K that is done as a family,” Perham Cross Country Head Coach Jeff Morris said. “It’s an untimed event that is more about getting out there and promoting physical fitness. 4 | Summer Scene May 2015

The Mature Mile focuses on senior citizens and up. It’s a real neat event to do as a community and as a family.” The next opportunity is a new fun run to the community. It’s the St. Paul’s Color Dash. Dash events have gained popularity throughout the country, and Perham’s will be on June 13. The event is an untimed 5K, where participants are splashed, sprinkled and sprayed with different colors at each kilometer point. Fifty percent of the proceeds from this run benefit St. Paul’s Lutheran School. “They are trying to do different things where it’s not always about getting a medal. It’s kind of nice getting a memory too,” Morris said. “It’s not even as much about as racing, it’s about getting out there, participating and having fun—those are what those events are a lot about.” The third event of June is the 20th annual Turtle Fest 5K/10K on June 20. The Turtle Fest 5K and 10K is a traditional race held at Arvig Park, which coincides with the annual Turtle Fest in Perham. “Jim Lee started the event and he was phenomenal in starting it. It was one that we (Perham Cross Country Boosters) took over,” Morris said. “Turtle Fest has a lot of history and Lee did an awesome job for many years organizing that event. It’s been a great event with the Turtle Fest events that happen that week. A lot of lake people come out and say, ‘Part of our vacation is going to end our vacation running a 5K or a 10K as a family.’” The fourth and final event of June

involves bicycling, running and swimming. The 12th annual Average Jo Triathlon is on June 27. “We have been doing the triathlon for going on 12 years, and it has really been amazing,” Average Jo Triathlon Race Director Jill Shipman said. “It started with 75 racers, and now we are up to 200. We have some real incredible people that come through here. We have the beginners as well. It has been really good, and good for the community to see the event and to see how it works.” Shipman quickly credits the help that the triathlon receives from the community. “We have a lot of volunteers that help. It’s just a great event,” Shipman said. “It keeps growing every year. Everyone is happy; we have a great group of volunteers.” From the beginning, Shipman believed that the event would grow and hoped for it to reach this point. “I always think big. We are at a good point. I don’t want it to get too much bigger,” Shipman said. “It’s manageable, and we want to make sure everyone is safe.” The race series takes a slight break, but heats back up with the sixth annual Harrier Half Marathon and 5K on July 25. Both events are on USATF certified courses. Morris said the half marathon is the brain child of Bob Beseman, who is a parent involved with the Perham Cross Country program. “Our community has done a great job of bringing support to that event,” Morris said. “It has a little bit more to offer to people, because when people are

starting to get to that distance, it’s not so much of just running a road race, it’s a lifetime goal. There are a lot of people that want to run a half marathon or a marathon. It’s a real neat event to give people the opportunity to do something that they normally wouldn’t be able to do.” The race series will switch to the wheels with the 20th, and final, Cal Miller Bike Race on Aug. 16. The race series concludes with two new events, one in October and one in November. On Halloween, the Perham Race Series will be hosting the first-ever Zombie Crawl, while on Thanksgiving weekend, the first annual United Community Bank Turkey Trot will take place on Nov. 26. “We have great events, great marketing and the town is so good,” Shipman said. “We promote our activities really well, healthy living and a healthy community.” For more information on the Perham Race Series, search Perham Race Series on Facebook or www.perham.com.

Bret Setterholm teaches sixth grade in Battle Lake, Minn. Over the summer, he works as a professional fishing guide and fishes in tournaments.

by Elizabeth Huwe

ehuwe@perhamfocus.com

Bret Setterholm got introduced to fishing “many years ago,” by his parents while growing in up in New York Mills. “I’ve always had Lund boats in my blood, growing up there,” he said, chuckling. The boat company is now one of his business sponsors. Now a sixth grade teacher in the Battle Lake School District, Bret has spent 18 summers continuing the tradition his family started: teaching others about fishing. “I loved to fish all the time,” Bret said. However, when working construction jobs over the summer after college, he didn’t always have much time to get out on the lake. “I just asked my dad one time if I could start a guide service in the summer and use his boat. That’s kind of just how it started… and it all just clicked.” And so, Bret’s Guide Service was born. He primarily leads fishing excursions targeting walleye. “That seems to be the most soughtafter fish among all my clients,” Bret said of the Minnesota state fish. He has done 6 | Summer Scene May 2015

trips for muskies and other species too. He said he likes to try to keep clients who are visiting and staying at a resort on that same lake, to help show them around “their” lake. But, there are exceptions to that rule. “I go where the bite is,” Bret said. “You’re out there every day, so you know if it slows down on one lake… you’ve got to switch it up the next day.” Bret said about 80 percent of his trips are on Otter Tail Lake, but he also goes to Big and Little Pine, Rush and West Battle lakes. “I think it’s going to be one of our better openers… it’s been so nice out,” Bret said in late April. “The water’s been running about 50-55 degrees, so those fish should come out and be pretty hungry by opener.” Hungry fish sounds like good news for early-season anglers – but what are they hungry for? “Spottail shiners (minnows) are the bait to go with right away on opener,” Bret said without a second thought. “Those shiners are the ones that are starting to spawn then, too. It’s kind of like a buffet for walleyes and all fish. Shiners are pretty much the number one

bait, for me.” As for where to go on a lake to find walleye, Bret said the “best” locations transition throughout the summer. Early-on, Bret said, lake inlets are a hot spot for fishing action, since the water is somewhat warmer from being in shallower rivers. “Everything’s going to be washing down,” Bret said. “The minnows are going to be feeding there and everything feeds on everything else.” Around June, Bret said more of the action shifts to shoreline breaks, points and inside turns. In July and August, fish tend to move toward mid-lake humps, said Bret. For those who aren’t as familiar with the area’s lakes, Bret said it is pretty hard to go wrong. “As far as lakes to target, all the lakes are good around this area,” Bret said. “We’re very lucky to have the lakes we do around the Perham area. They’re just unbelievable. You can even go to small lakes, it doesn’t have to be the wellknown lakes, to do well.” For more information about fishing with Bret, visit www.bretsguideservice. com.

Boaters and anglers are encouraged to wear a life jacket anytime they are on the water. In 2014, there were 14 boating-related deaths in Minnesota and in 13 of those cases, the person who drowned was not wearing a life jacket.

Fishing questions answered at Fish Minnesota Where on Lake Vermilion is Wakemup Bay? When can I fish for bass? How can I buy a license? Find answers to these and other questions at Fish Minnesota, the easy-to-use Department of Natural Resources fishing website at www. mndnr.gov/fishmn. “At Fish Minnesota, you can find fishing information and regulations in a user-friendly format,” said Al Stevens, DNR fisheries lake and stream survey program consultant. “It’s a good place to get your fishing questions answered.” The DNR created Fish Minnesota last year as part of Gov. Mark Dayton’s Plain Language Executive Order that directed state agencies to make information easier to access and understand. “We didn’t stop at Fish Minnesota. We also reworked the new fishing regulations booklet this year to include similar question-and-answer formats, and DNR-wide we are doing more to communicate in plain language,” Stevens said. Fish Minnesota wraps in the DNR’s popular LakeFinder site that lets users search for information on more than 4,500 lakes and rivers throughout the state. Smartphone or tablet users can open LakeFinder Mobile and find nearby places to fish using GPS-enabled devices. They can even buy a license with their device. Customers who purchase online via smartphone won’t receive a conventional paper license. Instead, they’ll receive a text message or email that serves as proof of a valid fish or game license to state conservation officers. A printed copy of the text or email also can serve as proof of a valid license. Besides LakeFinder, Fish Minnesota includes fishing regulations, definitions of common fishing terms, locations of fishing piers, and answers to basic fishing questions. “Learning what you need to know to go fishing shouldn’t be complicated,” Stevens said. “This site provides that information and gives anglers details about lakes and regulations.” The printed 2015 Minnesota Fishing Regulations booklet is available at DNR license agents, and at www.mndnr.gov/ fishmn. Aquatic invasive species are everyone’s concern Bret said one of his chief concerns while bringing clients around is boat cleanliness and doing his part to stop the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS). “I like to stress that a lot, because, everybody around Perham, these are kind of like ‘our’ lakes,” Bret said. “We want to be real safe so we don’t get a lot of that (Eurasian water) milfoil and zebra mussels.” For more information about preventing the spread of AIS and a list of water bodies that have been designated as “infested,” visit www.dnr.state.mn.us/invasives/aquatic. Prepare now for a safe boating season Before launching into open water, boaters are reminded to inspect their boats and boating equipment and review regulations, which can be found in the 2015 Minnesota Boating Guide at www. mndnr.gov/regulations/boatwater. “The best time to make sure boats, equipment, and safety items are in legal and proper working order is before your first launch of the season,” said Debbie Munson Badini, boat and water safety education coordinator with the Department of Natural Resources. “No one wants to break down, get a ticket or have a safety emergency after waiting all winter to get back on the water.” In addition to making sure boats are equipped with all required safety items, it’s important to take extra precautions during the cold water season, when more than 30 percent of Minnesota’s boating fatalities take place. While children younger than 10 years old must wear life jackets while aboard watercraft when underway (i.e., not tied

to a dock or anchored for swimming), boat and water safety officials strongly recommend that all boaters wear life jackets anytime they are on cold water, no matter their age. “Wearing a life jacket is an imperative part of staying safe on the water during the spring months when the water is extremely cold,” Munson Badini said. “In the event of an unexpected fall or capsizing, having a life jacket on can make all the difference. Adult boaters resistant to wearing a typical life jacket are encouraged to try inflatable styles, designed to make preventive use more convenient and comfortable.” Before the first launch, boaters should verify their motorboats are equipped with the following: -U.S. Coast Guard-approved wearable life jackets for each person on board. -A Type IV throwable flotation device on boats 16 feet or longer. -A horn or a whistle. -Type B U.S. Coast Guard-approved fire extinguisher. -Navigation lights in working order. -Valid boat registration, with num-

Renewals can be done in person, or online at www.mndnr.gov/licenses. Springtime in Maplewood State Park by Lina Belar For The Focus

Maplewood State Park, located west of Perham, is one of the area’s most popular destinations in the fall. Each year, the maple forest turns red, yellow and gold, providing a brilliant display that attracts visitors and photographers from hundreds of miles around. But, Maplewood State Park provides another kind of display in spring. “It’s a different palette of colors,” says Park Manager, Don Del Greco, “there is every shade of green. The pale yellows and reds and oranges of the budding leaves give a hint of what will come in the fall.” Spring is a great time to take a leisurely drive along the scenic roads through the park to observe the wildlife. The park is host to 50 species of mammals and 150 bird species many of which can be seen from the comfort of your car. To see some of spring’s hidden treasures, you may want to get out of the car and get a little closer to nature. Peer into the wooded areas as you drive along and you’ll see both hepaticas and bloodroot. Pull to the side to study them more closely. The sharp-lobed hepatica is one of the first to bloom. This year, hepaticas were found as early as April 13. These flowers come in shades of purple to pink to blue, rising bravely above the lobed leaves. When a cold spell threatens, they curl their heads down and wait it out, insulated by the fuzzy hairs on their stems. They grow close to the ground in damp, shaded areas, often at the base of maple trees. The bloodroot is another early spring flower, blooming even when snow is still on the ground. It will send a stem up to 8 12 | Summer Scene May 2015

inches high, topped with a delicate white flower. Bloodroot gets its name from the red-colored juice in its veins, which was used by Native Americans for decoration. Another early bloomer is the pasque flower. These fuzzy, light blue flowers are often found in roadside ditches where they can be mistaken for clumps of dust or lint. Look for them at the edge of prairies in dry, rocky soil. Throughout the woods are wood anemones and nodding trillium. Later in May, large-flowered bellwort, with hanging, yellow bell-like flowers, are visible in many areas throughout the park. Also blooming in late spring are the yellow lady slipper and showy orchid. Because the park sits astride the imaginary line dividing the grass prai-

rie from the woodland forest, there are many varieties of wildflowers to be found. Helpful guides are available for wildflower seekers. Kids (and adults) can answer the wildflowers’ call on a geocaching adventure that is taking place in 74 state parks and 7 state trails this year. In the Perham area, Maplewood, Glendalough, Buffalo River, Lake Carlos and Itasca are included. Some parks, like Glendalough and Buffalo River, are geocaching checkpoints where GPS units can be checked out for free. All these state parks and recreation areas have hidden caches containing a special wildflower card at each. The more cards collected, the more rewards you can earn. This year the hunt began on

Earth Day, April 22, and will end Oct. 31, 2017. A new card will be featured each year. More information is available at mndnr.gov/geocaching. “One of the pleasures of wildflower hunting,” says Del Greco, “is that they won’t fly away and you don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn to find them, like a birder.” Maplewood is also an excellent site for birders. Its wide range of habitat provides for excellent diversity. The Hallaway Hill Trail and Overlook provide a panoramic view of the park and make good observation points. On the lakes, waterfowl, gulls and terns, congregate in spring and fall. In the woodlands, look for red-shouldered hawks. Some of the most exciting birds to look for in spring are the 25 species of neotropical migrant warblers. These tiny birds, weighing no more than a couple of postage stamps, migrate from Central America. They fly mostly at night and come to rest in the park in the morning, where they feed voraciously before flying on in search of their nesting grounds. These birds, which are some of the most colorful signs of spring have equally colorful names, such as: yellow-rumped warbler, magnolia warbler, chestnut-sided warbler, blue-winged warbler, goldenSharp-lobed hepatica sprouted around April 13 this year in Maplewood State Park.

winged warbler, Tennessee warbler and more. Maplewood State Park is open yearround for visitors. Walk-in camping and two electric-equipped sites are available. Campground water is shut off for the season but water is available at the contact station. During the season, the park has a variety of sites available: 71 drive-in sites and 32 electric sites, three backpack sites and a horse camp with 24 sites. Horse trails are now open for the year. One group camp that accommodates up to 30 people is also available. It is in a semi-wooded area between Bass and Beers Lakes. There are also three yearround cabins with electricity, one of which is wheelchair accessible. For reservations, call the state park reservation service or register online. Reservations are recommended for weekends and holidays during the regular camping season, but are not needed Nov. 1 - April 1. Pasque flowers have tiny hairs on their stems to protect them during mid-spring cold-snaps.
