Scootin’ on down to Polka Daze Eric Hendrickx
ehendrickx@perhamfocus.com
Ottertail’s sixth annual Polka Daze is gearing up for another fun-filled dancing weekend September 10-12. Held under the ‘Big Tent’ right in the heart of Ottertail city, this year’s committee is crossing their fingers that Mother Nature will avoid an appearance at the 2015 Polka gathering. Last year, a late Wednesday night storm completely toppled over the event’s main tent. Although the polka festivities went on as scheduled, due to the extraordinary help of dozens of early arriving volunteers, this year’s festival surely wishes to sidestep any weather related incidents. Back again as the event’s main sponsor, the Ottertail Lions Club will be out in full force putting on this area-favorite dancing weekend. Everything kicks off the evening of Thursday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. with George’s Concertina Band playing until 11 p.m. Admission price of just $5. Festivities resume Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. with the Top Notchmen and 4 | Fall Scene September 2015
Marie & The Boys alternating set times from 1-10 p.m. These alternating set times makes it possible for nonstop dancing and music all afternoon and evening. Saturday will see a similar face with the Top Notchmen again opening up at 1 p.m. New to the weekend though will be Jerry B. & Joyce, alternating in until the same commencing time of 10 p.m. Admission for both Friday and Saturday will be $14 for each day which will be good for both bands, the entire day. Free camper space will again be available for all festival goers as each year’s event sees attendees from across the Midwest and even the country. These camp sites will be primitive with no hookups. Food, beer and set-ups will be served yet again by the dedicated Ottertail Lions Club. All bands are described as an “old time variety’ and sure to put on hours of great tunes. There will be a large wood dance floor set up inside the big tent for a great foundation for all dancers alike.
Young and old or anyone in between is encouraged to come out and join in the fun for Polka Daze 2015. The big tent will be located across from the water tower again this year. Ottertail is located 12 miles south of Perham on MN Highway 78 and then 1 mile east on MN Highway 108.
Situated at Ottertail’s City Park, Polka Daze will take place across from the water tower under the ‘Big Tent’ again this year.

MN DNR sets “conservative” deer goals Says will allow populations to rebuild Elizabeth Huwe
ehuwe@perhamfocus.com
For many hunters across the state of Minnesota, the deer season will likely feel very similar to the 2014 deer season. On July 28, the Minnesota DNR announced deer hunting regulations for the 2015 season. “The 2015 deer hunting regulations will be quite similar to last year, with one-deer limits in most of the state,” said Leslie McInenly, big game program leader for the DNR. “Hunters should check the 2015 regulations early, because in the majority of areas, hunters will need to apply for a permit to shoot an antlerless deer.” In 70 of Minnesota’s 128 deer permit areas, hunters must be chosen in a lottery to shoot an antlerless deer and only bucks can be hunted in 14 areas. Around the Perham area, zones that will require a lottery for permits are: 246, 258, 259 and 266. In these zones, prospective firearm and muzzleloader hunters must apply between now and Thursday, Sept. 10 to be entered in an either-sex permit lottery. Bonus permits are not allowed in these areas, but unsuccessful applicants may use their regular license to take a “legal” buck. 8 | Fall Scene September 2015
The 2015 deer hunting season looks promising for northwestern Minnesota as deer numbers are up from last year due to mild temperatures and little snow.
Hunter choice will be allowed in the following hunting areas: 213, 239, 240 and 248. This includes land near Perham and south of U.S. Highway 10. In these areas, there is no drawing for permits. Eligible hunters may take one deer of either sex with their regular license, but no bonus permits will be allowed. Areas 214 and 241 (which cover Perham and land north of U.S. Highway 10) will be managed deer areas for the 2015 season. There will be no drawing for permits. Hunters can take a deer of either sex with their initial license, along with a bonus to take up to two deer. There are no intensive harvest deer areas near Perham. In areas with restrictions, residents of veterans’ homes and residents who are at least 84-years-old may take a deer of either sex during the season. Check with the state DNR for more information. “Given the mild winter for most of the state and reduced harvest last year, we anticipate that hunters will be seeing more deer when afield, and we are already hearing from people that they are seeing more deer this summer,”
McInenly said. According to a separate report from the state DNR, more deer have been seen following the relatively mild winter. “Reports of good white-tailed fawn numbers are coming in from around Minnesota as a milder winter and a conservative approach to the 2014 hunting season are already starting to show results,” said a DNR report. “Deer numbers in the northwest region (including the Perham area) appear to be up from last year,” the report said. “Last winter brought mild temperatures and little snow. A conservative 2014 deer season with a low number of antlerless permits issued has resulted in more does and fawns on the landscape.” “Abundant spring and early summer rainfall has provided excellent summer deer forage,” the report continued. “Deer are feeding in the afternoon and evening in the open, grassy areas and along forest roads, escaping the flies and other insects in the wooded areas.” The report addressed smaller, more localized areas as well: -“In the Bemidji and Park Rapids areas, deer numbers are increasing. There
seems to be excellent reproduction and many large fawns have been observed. Buck numbers appear up from last year and some nice bucks have been seen.” -“In the Fergus Falls and Glenwood areas, deer population numbers remain about the same as last year, both in terms of fawns and adults. The few bucks observed have nice antler growth.” -“The Detroit Lakes area deer population appears to be up from last year. Many does, plenty of twin fawns and yearlings have been sighted. Only small bucks have been observed.” Deer hunting licenses, lottery applications and special hunt applications are available at any DNR license agent, by telephone at 888-665-4236 or online at www.mndnr.gov/buyalicense. The DNR strongly advises hunters to review new deer hunting regulations, permit area designations and boundary changes before applying. Current and up-to-date information is available online at www.mndnr.gov/hunting/deer. Lottery winners will be notified in October.

I’ll be the first one to admit – I know next to nothing about football. One thing I have picked up on – game day is all about the food. Here is a recipe you can make on game day that is just a little bit out of the ordinary, but is still totally tasty (and might make any dieting visitors cry a little bit).
Note: -Serve with garlic bread or toasted baguette slices while hot.

Hike, bike or ride through the colors of fall
Inspiration Peak rises above hardwood forest and prairie hills to give hikers a stunning view of the surrounding countryside.
Elizabeth Huwe
ehuwe@perhamfocus.com
As area leaves start to turn from lush green to vibrant, fiery hues of scarlet, copper and amber, residents and visitors of Minnesota turn out in droves to take in the sight. While driving through the countryside offers a convenient way to quickly see wide areas of scenery, being strapped in a car creates a disconnect with the actual experience of being in nature. This autumn, try a slightly more involved way to immerse yourself in the season’s natural colors. Hike Inspiration Peak Inspiration Peak is a Minnesota State Park Wayside (a parcel of land too small to be an independent park) located in the southern part of Otter Tail County, 16 | Fall Scene September 2015
near the town of Urbank. The peak rises to 1,750 feet – about 400 feet above the surrounding countryside – giving those who climb the paved trail a nearly unobstructed view of the surrounding hardwood forest and prairie hills. Nobel Prize-winning author (and Minnesotan) Sinclair Lewis was the one who penned the name “Inspiration
Peak” for the hill in the 1930s – before that time, it was called Leaf Mountain. In addition to the trail and associated benches, restrooms, a parking lot and a picnic area are available at Inspiration Peak. For more information about this wayside, visit www.dnr.state.mn.us/ state_parks/waysides/index.html.
Bike Glendalough State Park Biking around Glendalough State Park, found north of Battle Lake in the south-central portion of Otter Tail County, is another up-close and personal option to see fall colors. The 12-mile trail takes bicyclists from the town of Battle Lake, around the northwestern side of West Battle Lake and into a loop of the park. Within the park, there is also a 1-1/2 mile gravel path that can be explored by bike and 2 miles of mountain biking trails. Visitors who enter the park on bicycle do not need to pay the same vehicle fee as motorists, however; park officials request that the marked trails are respected – and that bikers not leave the paths. A special fall colors bike ride through the park is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. – noon. The ride will be led by park staff, which will share the history of Glendalough and teach participants about the park’s features. Go to www.dnr.state.mn.us/state_ parks/glendalough/index.html for more information about Glendalough State park. Ride Maplewood State Park Maplewood State Park, located near Pelican Rapids, in the northwestern portion of Otter Tail County, is a local highlight for seasonal horseback riding trails. The park is home to 20 miles of horse trails through the namesake maple forest and a specialized, 24-site horse camp area. Horses can only be ridden on specifically designated horse trails in this and other state parks. Other riding options in the region include the Huntersville State Forest and Lake Carlos State Park. In order to ride a horse in the state park, individuals aged 16 or older must have a horse pass from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Several levels of passes are available
The Glendalough Trail is a 12-mile, 10-foot-wide paved bike path that takes riders past West Battle Lake and through Glendalough State Park.
for a variety of costs, ranging from daily ($5) to annual ($21). Maplewood State Park also has a scenic park drive, along with hiking routes and winter trails for cross country skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing. Fall-themed activities will take place at Maplewood over their “Leaf Days”
events, which will be held Sept. 26 and 27, and Oct. 3 and 4. For more information about Maplewood State Park, visit www.dnr. state.mn.us/state_parks/maplewood/ index.html.
