PERHAM AREA’S

Fourth of July CELEBRATION

KELSEE NEWTON knewton@perhamfocus.com

The Fourth of July celebration in the Perham area has been celebrated for more than 30 years. This year, the fireworks display will begin at dusk Krueger Field in Perham. Permits and signed contracts are part of preparing for the event and usually finished by June 1. Each year donations from sponsors and businesses help raise money for fireworks, according to Richter, from Richter’s Men’s Wear. Last couple years, “they spent $4,500 it’s kind of been at that the last couple years,” said Richter. Flashing Thunder from Mitchell, Iowa, supplies the fireworks. For the Perham Fourth of July fireworks, different size shells and an enclosed location, there will be more ground displays because people are closer. “The ones in town there are going to be seven different ground displays that don’t go up as high, but they are kind of spectacular,” said Richter. Throughout the show there will be different types of shells and for the Perham show there may be a total of 300 to 400 types of shells. 6 | SUMMER SCENE JUNE 2016

“Not one will be the same,” he said. Every year the company that shoots off the display, Flashing Thunder, comes out with new products and every year it’s a little bit different from previous years, according to Richter. Since 1996, Richter has been certified and a part of the fireworks display for the Perham area. Before Richter took over, the Perham Fire Department was in charge, but the state of Minnesota required they be certified for fireworks displays. That’s when Richter decided to take over and got his certificate. The purpose of the fireworks is to “celebrate our freedom in America, and we thank the veterans,” said Richter. Many sponsors and business donations contribute to the fireworks display in Perham, he said. “Without those donors, it doesn’t happen, so we say thank our sponsors,” he said. Sponsors include Perham Athletic Association, KLN Industries, United Community Bank, Arvig, Perham Focus Group, City of Perham, Bremer Bank, Perham Lions, Central Minnesota Credit, Perham Office Supply and Overland Insurance.

LARGEST TWO-DAY ART SHOW OPENS JULY 9 Artists, performers and food part of Phelps Mill Festival DEBBIE IRMEN dirmen@perhamfocus.com This year’s juried art show at the Phelps Mill Festival will feature a lot of new vendors with a more contemporary look, according to Festival director Ken Martin. “There will more art deco, metal art, junk art, work that is appealing to millennials looking to put it in their gardens,” Martin said. “We have a lot of variety this year.” Billed as the largest art and craft event of the summer, the major component of the festival is the juried art show, with 100-plus booths run by various artists selling their work. Exhibitors offer unique items that are made with fine workmanship and some are found only at Phelps Mill Festival. Phelps Mill Festival, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to Otter Tail County each summer, is planned from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 9, and from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 10, at Phelps Mill County Park. Adult admittance is $5 and children 12 and younger may enter free. No pets are allowed in the festival area. The Underwood and Dalton Lions will offer shuttle service from an 80-acre visitor parking lot to and from the festival grounds at no charge, and handicapped parking is provided. Also available at the festival is free WIFI, provided by Otter Tail Telcom/Park Region Telephone, and a cash machine. The popular Underwood Lions pork chops will be served, along with food options from eight additional non-profit groups. The money raised by each group benefits programs and communities served by each. Two popular activities during the festival include the kid’s tent with turtle races, bean bag toss, and art projects planned. Destiny Christian Academy of Ashby will supervise the activi8 | SUMMER SCENE JUNE 2016

ties. Carried over from last year will be the popular “Paint in the Park,” by Art Bar 39. For a small fee, anyone may paint an original work of art. Art teachers will be on hand to help even the most novice artist paint a picture of the mill, Martin said. Entertainment, another popular activity among festival goers, will feature musicians, a magician and a local band, with shows running nearly non-stop each of the two days. Saturday’s lineup includes the organic Vaudeville folk duo, Jack and Kitty Norton and Magic by Chaz. Jack and Kitty will perform at 1:15 and 4 p.m. Saturday. Kitty is the niece of reggae legend Bunny Wailer and Jack’s babysitter was ukulele-playing eccentric Tiny Tim. Together these Emmy-award winning singer/songwriters from Minnesota play a refreshing blend of organic vaudeville folk that one reviewer described as “Beyonce meets Leon Redbone or Alicia Keys meets Tom Waits.” Charles G. Misenheimer of Tofte, Minn., will perform at noon and 2:45 p.m. Saturday. He is known as a strolling magician with his Magic by Chaz routine of an energetic nine-

teenth-century “medicine man,” peddling his wonders. He especially loves performing to kids, though older crowds also enjoy his brand of magic. “I love working on the street, and seeing the excitement when a child experiences magic – sometimes for the very first time,” he said on his website. “The look of wonder when they believe they’re the ones who make the magic happen is priceless. Creating that feeling is what being a magician is all about.” The festival grounds open at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. At 10:30 a.m. a worship service conducted by Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls is planned. Entertainment features the Giving Back Jack band opening at 12:45 p.m. The Fergus Falls-based group is comprised of musicians and vocalists Matt Muchow, Ty Stortroen, Luke Voorhees and Chad Hulter. They have been playing music for most of their lives and play everything from the classic rock n roll era, to the rock sound of today. Once again, Maurice Skogen of Valley Acoustics Sound Co., will provide the sound system, a job he has held for nearly all of the 32 years of the festival. Martin hopes that the weather will cooperate during the two-day event better than last year, when a tornado touched down on Otter Tail Lake, sucked up a lot of water, and “dumped it right on top of us.” “We are overdue for good weather,” he said, adding, “We got all the people out right away last year; everyone helped the vendors get out, though several vendors still lost some stuff.” For a successful festival Martin counts on the assistance of his mother, Val, and countless other volunteers, including the Phelps Mill Country board, festival sponsor. The board is comprised of Jerome Holicky, chairman of the board; David Iverson, Dean Nelson, Jim Adamatz, Mike Brause, Mike Charest and Robyn Anderson.

COLOR DASH 5K Saturday, June 11 A fundraiser for St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Perham, the Color Dash 5k has quickly grown into one of Minnesota’s largest Color Dash races. Last year’s event drew more than 700 runners and raised more than $13,000. Not a runner? Just come and watch! Registration starts at 8 a.m. at Arvig Park in Perham. The race begins at 10 a.m., with the grand finale ‘Color Explosion’ at 11 a.m. GREAT AMERICAN THINK-OFF Saturday, June 11 The Cultural Center in New York Mills is nationally known for its annual Great American Think-Off. Now in its 24th year, the ThinkOff invites armchair philosophers from across the country to share their opinions on select current events and topics. From hundreds of submitted essays, four finalists are chosen to debate their ideas in front of a live audience in town. This year, they’ll be debating whether or not income inequality threatens democracy. Over the years, the Think-Off has been covered by C-SPAN, the New York Times and the Today Show. The debate will be held in the New York Mills School Auditorium at 7 p.m. For more information, call the Cultural Center at 218-385-3339 or visit think-off.org. RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE RIDE Saturday, June 11 Impressively, the little city of New York Mills holds an annual motorcycle charity ride that’s the largest of its kind in the world. The Ronald McDonald House Ride draws in hundreds of bikers every summer from all across Minnesota, the Dakotas and beyond. Over its 14-year history, the event has raised more than $1.2 million to support seriously ill children and their families. The public is welcome to line up along the streets of New York Mills to watch as the riders take off. Other events, including games for kids, also take place around the time of the ride. For more information, visit rmhride.com. PERHAM LAKES AREA RIB AND CHICKEN COOK-OFF Saturday, June 25 Get your grill on! For the past few years in downtown Perham, rib-masters from around the region have gathered for this day-long grilling showdown. Ribs and chicken are cooked and then judged on taste, texture, tenderness and appearance; a serving line is available after all of the judging is complete. Concessions are available throughout the day. The public is able to sample ribs and chicken from all of the grillers, along with a variety of sides. For more information, call 218-849-8466. DENT DAZE Saturday, July 9 Every summer, the Dent Community Club organizes a day-long, family-friendly celebration that proves it’s possible to have really big fun in a really small town. Activities in past years have included games for adults (such as the popular bed races) and kids (little tractor races are always a hit), a parade, petting zoo, food and more. Events begin at 10 a.m. For more information, visit the Dent Community Club’s facebook page. JUNE 2016 SUMMER SCENE | 9

LUNDMANIA SUMMER CELEBRATION IS JULY 8 Activities planned in New York Mills offer fun for all ages DEBBIE IRMEN dirmen@perhamfocus.com This year’s Lundmania Summer Celebration in New York Mills is July 8, and includes many tried-and-true family-friendly activities, as well as the third annual Fish House Festival on Main Ave., according to one of the event planners. “It’s just a fun, typical summer celebration, with food, fun, water and music,” said Amy Wahlgren. “There should be a little bit of something for everybody.” Friday the Cultural Center will hold its third annual Fish House Festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., sponsored this year by Lund Boats, with activities planned in the street near the Center. Area artists will be painting a fish house, which will be raffled off later in the day, decoys and more. Also planned is a youth decoy painting class, live music and games, such as ladder golf and giant Jenga. In the studio above the center will be Art in Your Park art activities for kids. At 6:30 p.m. a live auction and fish house raffle drawing is scheduled. The auction will feature decoys and cabin décor items painted earlier in the day. Proceeds will be split between the Cultural Center and the artists. Sporting Art through Time, an artists’s gallery reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. The exhibit, open from July 6 through 30, features decoys by Jay McEvers, as well as other decoy art10 | SUMMER SCENE JUNE 2016

ists, and sporting art memorabilia from the 1920s through 1960s. The day’s activities start with the fishing tournament on Otter Tail Lake, with results announced at 5:30 p.m. Friday. At noon Friday, the Great Boat Hunt begins on Main Ave. and kids may swim free from 1 to 5 p.m. at Legried Community Pool. At 4 p.m. a coin scramble and inflatables will be in Central Park. Also in the park, food vendors will be set up and the results from the fishing tournament can be observed. The top 10 winners from the tournament will be a part of the main parade, beginning at 7 p.m. The parade is a “pretty good-sized parade,” according to Wahlgren, with approximately 75 entries. As a special feature, again this year, parade organizers will be awarding prizes to entries in the parade. Winners will be judged on Most Crowd Pleasing/Unique entry, or as an Honorable Mention, with the winners awarded Mills Marks. Also in the park, the Boatville Drags run from 4 to 4:45 p.m. in the park. The miniature pedal boat races will include various heats and prizes. From 4 to 7 p.m. a fish fry dinner will be served and the Lions Club and Liquor store will be selling cold beverages beginning at 4 p.m. and continuing through the street dance. The dance features Twilight Jams Entertainment, and begins at approximately 9 p.m.

Relay for Life EOT

looking to raise $135,000 for cancer research, support DEBBIE IRMEN dirmen@perhamfocus.com The annual East Otter Tail Relay of Life walk to raise money for cancer research and support of those living with cancer and their families begins at 5 p.m. Friday, July 8, with the official opening at 7 p.m., and continues until 6 a.m. Saturday, July 9, at the Perham High School track. This year’s theme is “Paint Your World Purple.” Local businesses will be asked to paint the town purple during Relay Week, July 3 through 6. Kits are available. Call Lisa Peterson at 3464747 or Ron Anderson at 346-5352. The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event symbolizes hope and a shared goal to end a disease that threatens the lives of so many people. The Relay was started in 1985, by Dr. Gordy Klatt, who walked and ran for 24 hours a track in Tacoma, Wash., raising $27,000 for the American Cancer Society to find cancer. A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event. Since then, the Relay movement has grown into a worldwide fundraiser, raising nearly $5 billion to fight cancer. To date, approximately 16 teams have formed in Perham and raised approximately $20,255 through various fundraisers. Teams are still forming and a number of fundraisers are planned throughout the month of June. The Relay raised $122,000 in 2016, and set the goal higher at $135,000 for this year’s event. The event features opening ceremonies,

12 | SUMMER SCENE JUNE 2016

food, entertainment and lots of team activities to keep walkers awake overnight. One of the more moving aspects of the walk is when the survivors take the first lap around the track. Cheered on by the other participants and the sound of upbeat music, the Survivors Lap is to celebrate victory over cancer. The selected honorary chairpersons also speak at the event, which is free for anyone to attend. Another lap is taken by the caregivers, to recognize their difficult task of caring for those with cancer and to honor those who have fought cancer in the past. As part of the walk, people may purchase luminaria, which are decorated in memory of a loved one or in honor of a survivor. Candles are lit inside of the decorated bags during the luminaria ceremony and illuminate the walking path throughout the rest of the night. Last year, 5,000 luminaria lined the walking path. This year, Walk organizers hope to have 6,000 to 7,000 bags. Cost to purchase a luminary is $10. The luminaria lighting ceremony begins at approximately 8:45 p.m., and are used to spell out “HOPE” in the bleachers at the field, a symbol for all people living with or remembering a loved one who has died of cancer. For more information on the walk, to purchase a luminary, or to make a donation or enter a team in the Relay, contact Lori Bachmann at lori.bachmann@cancer.org or call 218-847-4725.

A number of groups and teams are planning fundraisers for this year’s Relay for Life walk, scheduled July 8 and 9, in Perham. Money raised at these events goes toward the overall Relay total from the teams and sale of luminaria and benefits cancer research and support programs through the American Cancer Society. Ongoing until the July 8 Relay: Team Got Hope has cookbooks for sale, which can be purchased at Perham Printing and Bongard’s Cheese. Price is $3 for one, or $5 for two. Ongoing until the date of the Relay - St. Lawrence Saints team has necklaces designed by Julienne Boedigheimer for sale. The cost per necklace is $22. Several custom-made styles are available. Friday, June 10 - Team Got Hope will host a cheese and wine tasting event. Tickets are available prior to the event from Jodi at Perham Printing. Cost is $25. Friday, June 10 - The United Community Bank Team will have a barbecue lunch from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Hot dogs, beans, chips, lemonade will be served. Sunday, June 12 - The Calvary Lutheran Team will serve a ham and egg breakfast at Calvary’s Fellowship Hall from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There will also be a craft sale. Admission is by freewill donation for the dinner. Thursday, June 23 - KLN/Shearers team will provide a lunch on the front lawn of KLN. FOR ACCURACY’S SAKE, KNOW NOW HOW TO READ YOUR GRAPH Graphs are wonderful tools. They are suited for every type of angler, and as consumers, we can choose how we make our graphs work for us. I’m a practical person. To suit my fishing style, I try to derive what I need from a graph or computer and become efficient and proficient with a handful of settings. I try to keep my fishing simple. While I have very nice graphs on my boat, I’ve learned to become proficient with the basic information and settings my graphs provide. I feel the most important feature of a graph is the depth reading. Yup. That’s it. Depth sounding! We need to know how deep we are fishing to be repetitive and accurate. When we see the digital number in the corner of the graph screen, we know for sure how deep it is. What ever else we derive from these machines is bonus. Fish are instinctive animals — so to be good anglers we should be instinctive, too. Therefore, be cautious of what you let your graph tell you. What you think you see on your graph’s screen and what is actually under your boat may be completely different. Interpretation is key. Understanding how your graph creates the images it draws is a big first step to becoming a proficient graph user. Take a look at the image I’ve provided for the article. Humminbird makes a wonderful graph — it is a great tool. The image you see is Humminbird’s down imaging scan. I really like down imaging because there is a lot less clutter in its images than regular sonar provides. I also find the color pallet options for down imaging soothing and easy to see. Ultimately, the images are crisp. Most folks looking at the image with this column, see a drop-off and then an island adjacent to the drop. People know that there is an island there because it’s exactly what the graph shows. However, this is not an island. I created that picture. I drew it with my boat. Why? For this. This is Graphing Awareness 101. What you need to know and understand about graphs and graphing

16 | SUMMER SCENE JUNE 2016

is that the depth signal crosses the graph screen as a single line. It never stops drawing the single line. The graph does not know if it’s on an island or drop off it, just keeps drawing a line of depth. The one dimensional image you see looks impressive and “structured.” How did I draw it? I boated off of the drop you see to the left of the alleged “island” and then I turned the boat around at a fair speed and drove the boat back up the same drop. When I got to the top of the drop, I drove off the drop again. The graph recorded the depth changes and the depth-lines happen to “look” like an island. It’s actually just a simple drop off. You need to believe your graph. Your graph works exactly as it should. However, you need to apply yourself and at least be aware that the image your graph displays might not be the three-dimensional structure your brain wants it to be. Case-in-point: If you drive your boat over a long narrow bar in the middle of a lake (one that’s not mapped out), your graph will display that bar as an island. It’ll look exactly like the image in this article. You might think you found an island. Before you start fishing, you need to investigate and make sure you know where the shallow water really goes. The only way to do that is to turn your boat around and see where it goes. The “island” which is actually a long narrow bar, might be a mile long. It might extend from one shore on the lake to the other. You need to slow down and research it. Your graph is programmed to do what it does, and it’s supposed to work for you but you need to interpret the information fairly and subjectively. If you work with your graph, it’ll work with you, and you’ll become a great and potent fishing team. Good luck graphing and fishing. Ross Hagemeister, meisterguideservice.com

MAPLEWOOD STATE PARK

IN OTTER TAIL COUNTY TOM HINTGEN AND DEBBIE IRMEN

Otter Tail County is home to two state parks, Glendalough and Maplewood, located near Pelican Rapids. The maple forest, for which the park is named, turns brilliant shades of orange, gold and red the fall, and is the location of eight major lakes and ponds which offer visitors places to swim, fish, boat and relax. Maplewood Park is home to 50 species of mammals and 150 bird species. The extensive trail system also attracts hikers and horseback riders in the spring, summer and fall, and crosscountry skiers in the winter. New to the state park system this year is same-day reservations at many park locations, which becomes available in May. The change is being implemented to modernize the state park reservation system and make it more convenient and efficient for visitors to Minnesota state parks. Among the amenities available at Maplewood is an interpretive exhibit, gift shop, and boat, canoe and picnic shelter rentals. The park also features 32 campsites with electric hookups. Reservations are recommended during the regular camping season. While visitors to Maplewood may be interested in relaxing, boating, camping or swimming, additional activities are planned at the park over the summer. On June 18, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., visitors may learn wildflower drawing techniques from a local art professor. No experience is necessary and paper, colored pencils and chalk pastels will be provided at no charge. Meet at the Josh Hanson Picnic Shelter. On July 16, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., learn how to draw the birds of Maplewood. No experience is necessary and supplies will be provided at no charge. The workshop will be at the Josh Hanson Picnic Shelter.

On July 17, the Minnesota State Parks and Trails system will celebrate its 125th anniversary with a picnic from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and join park staff at the Josh Hanson Memorial Picnic Shelter to celebrate the Minnesota State Parks and Trails Anniversary. Activities include a variety of music, prairie restoration program, old-time lawn games, and ethnic refreshments and snack food. On Aug. 20, enjoy the beauty of Maplewood and learn drawing techniques from a local art professor at the Josh Hanson Picnic Shelter. No prior experience is necessary. Supplies will be provided at no charge. All vehicles entering a state park require a permit which must be displayed on the lower right corner of the windshield. Day passes or year-around permits are available, either at the park office or at the self-registration kiosk. The park office hours are Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Friday-Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Office hours may vary depending upon staff availability. Use the self-registration kiosk at the park office when the office is unstaffed. Leave a message at 218-863-8383 and we’ll call you back. The park entrance is located seven miles east of Pelican Rapids on State Highway 108. More information on Maplewood is available at http://www. dnr.state.mn.us/state_parks or Google Maplewood State Park Maplewood State Park history Two years before Maplewood became an official state park, eight committee members worked to ensure the park’s establishment. They met regularly throughout the year of 1961. Representing Fergus Falls and Pelican Rapids were Dr. Norman Baker, Rudy Gustafson, M.W. Townsend, Truman Strand, Orlando Olson, Walter Spidahl, Bob King and Clyde ThorstenJUNE 2016 SUMMER SCENE | 17

son. They were authorized to appoint others to represent other towns from throughout Otter Tail County. Early leaders of the future state park appreciated the Maplewood area with its native woodlands of oak, maple, birch, elm, basswood and aspen. The committee discussed options on land in the proposed park area. They pledged to allow people to live in the area for as long as they wished, and not to evict anybody. State legislation was proposed on the establishment of the park. “The future state park’s beauty is known by many area residents who make yearly treks to view the scene, particularly in the autumn,” said Baker, known as the “Father of Maplewood State Park. Early on, it was decided that Highway 108 would be the northern boundary of the 3,200-acre park. County Highway 24 would be the southern boundary and the area would include Halloway Hill, Beers Lake, and numerous other small lakes and woodlands. U.W. Hella, director of the Minnesota division of state parks, also favored the area east of Pelican Rapids as the location for a new state park. This was a time in the nation’s history when John F. Kennedy served as president of the United States, succeeding Dwight Eisenhower. In 1959, four years before the dedication of Maplewood State Park, an estimated 2.9 million people visited state parks throughout Minnesota. “This area (Maplewood) is a considerable distance from other state parks, so it would be a wonderful location,” said Evan Haynes, acting regional chief of recreation resource planning for the National Park Service, An aerial survey of the Lake Lida area, and future Maplewood State Park land, took place in October 1961.

DIGNITARIES HAVE STAYED AT

Glendalough

Now the park is open to all visitors

TOM HINTGEN AND DEBBIE IRMEN Glendalough State Park is nestled in the transition zone between prairie and hardwood forest and offers a true respite from civilization. Crystal clear Annie Battle Lake is a 335-acre, non-motorized “Heritage Fishery” that provides a tranquil fishing experience second to none and special regulations sustain a steady supply of large sunfish, crappie, and the occasional walleye for the frying pan, and large bass for the camera. Near the pristine shores of this lake are a cart-in campground and canoe-in campsites, all free from the traffic and noise of traditional drive-in camping. Annie can also be the starting point for an exploration of the park by canoe or kayak on the connecting creeks. The restored historic Glendalough lodge on the north side of the lake details the park’s history as a private retreat and game farm for the Minneapolis Tribune. A paved bike trail loop and numerous hiking trails, including two interpretive trails, meander along five lakes, through rich woods and blooming prairies. Wildlife abounds year-round, and there are many observation decks along the trails. Trails are groomed in winter for skiing and snowshoeing. Picnicking and swimming is available on two sandy lakes. The park’s trail center and historic lodge are available for day rental, year-round. Both are heated and have flush toilets. Facilities can be reserved by calling the park at 218-864-0110. The park offers rentals of boats, canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards from spring to fall; and snowshoes and cross-country skis during the winter months. In addition to biking, hiking, boating and fishing, the park also offers various activities. To enjoy any of the activities at state parks, a vehicle permit is required. Permits can be purchased at park offices for $5 a day or $25 for an annual permit. On June 17, a workshop for fly tying will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. These flies are truly functional little pieces of art. Participants will tie one or two different types of flies during this workshop. Choose favorite colors or ones you think will “match the hatch.” This workshop is designed to accommodate beginners and all equipment is provided. Participants must be at least 8 years old. Space is limited, so call the park to register. If you want to learn more about fly fishing, make it a weekend and sign up for the Fly Fishing Workshop on Saturday, June 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. At the end of the day on Saturday partici22 | SUMMER SCENE JUNE 2016

pants will even be able to test out the flies on Annie Battle Lake, Glendalough’s unique Heritage Fishery. Participants should bring a hat, sunscreen, water and and a bag lunch. A fishing license is required if you are not a Minnesota resident. Participants must be 8 years old. Meet at the picnic tables by the beach at Molly Stark Lake for a different nature program every other Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. in July and August. These programs are designed for children aged 5-15, but all are welcome. Participants will explore topics like frogs and toads, insects, fish, and more. Program dates are June 22; July 6; July 20; Aug. 3; and Aug. 17. Meet at the fishing dock at Molly Stark Lake every other Wednesday in June, July and August from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. to learn canoeing basics from a naturalist. Topics covered will include safety, parts of the canoe and paddles. Learn strokes before heading out on to the water to practice skills. Equipment will be provided, so come enjoy a paddle on a quite lake. Program dates are June 22; July 6; July 20; Aug. 3; and Aug. 17. On June 25, explore the three lakes in the park and the streams connecting them at Glendalough State Park. These sections are appropriate for beginners through experts, and participants will be under the guidance of experienced instructors. We will start at Molly Stark Lake and paddle to Lake Blanche. All ages are welcome, but children must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $15 per canoe, which includes a shuttle, equipment and life jackets. Bring a lunch, sunscreen, bug spray, and a hat. Registration is required for all participants. Space is limited to 10 paddlers and five duffers/riders (15 people) Or (five canoes). Archery in the park is scheduled from 12:30 to 3 p.m. July 16 and Aug. 6, at the Molly Stark Picnic Shelter. This program covers the basics of archery (safety, proper care of the equipment and how to use a bow). Participants will be able to practice their new skills on the range by taking a turn shooting arrows at targets. Some come learn a new life long skill. All equipment is provided and no personal or outside equipment will be allowed on the range. On Aug. 14, celebrate one of Minnesota’s newest state parks. Glendalough is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Pack a picnic lunch and head down to the historic lodge and trail center shoreline to enjoy your meal. There will be music, games, and a special program to follow. Activities will be available starting at noon and the program will start at 2 p.m. Come early or stay late and tour the lodge, take a paddle, go swimming, hike the trails or take a ride on the paved bike trail Call 320-852-7200 to register for any of the activities listed.

Glendalough State park is located 1.5 miles north of Battle Lake on State Hwy. 78 and 1.8 miles east on Ottertail Co. Hwy 16 to the park entrance. For more information about Glendalough or to make reservations, call 218-864-0110. Biking in Glendalough Bicycle riders in Otter Tail County seeking a change of pace need to go no further than Glendalough State Park, northeast of Battle Lake. A new 5-1/2-mile paved bike path has lured riders to the park, with its trail loop around Annie Battle and Molly Stark lakes. Along the route riders will travel through rich woods and blooming prairies. Bicyclists can pause along the route to learn more about Glendalough and its history at informational stations. The trail loop connects to a paved bike path that takes riders to nearby Battle Lake, close to the airport on the northeast side of town. The paved bike path phase from the airport to the community center, just west of downtown Battle Lake, has yet to be completed. In the near future the bike path from the heart of Battle Lake to Glendalough State Park will be a stretch of close to four miles. For now, riders can and should take advantage of biking at Glendalough. Glendalough history: Glendalough became a state park in the early 1990s, several years after the establishment of Maplewood State Park five miles east of Pelican Rapids and has entertained government bigwigs. In 1952, Dwight Eisenhower took a break from his presidential race with Adlai Stevenson to spend a couple days at Glendalough,

back then owned by executives of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. The future president did some fishing at Annie Battle Lake. Richard Nixon spent a couple days at Glendalough following a 1956 campaign stop in Alexandria, when he served as vice president for Eisenhower. He took some time to swim in Annie Battle Lake. Nixon was elected president in 1968. Their visits are preserved in photographs on display at an outdoor kiosk near the main lodge at Glendalough where Eisenhower and Nixon stayed overnight. Pictures show Ike and Nixon, four years apart, wearing the same sweater loaned by their hosts. “We preserve one of the largest tracts of undeveloped lakeshore in west central Minnesota,” Park Manager Jeff Wiersma said. Little has changed near the main lodge where Eisenhower and Nixon stayed. A look to the southeast side of Annie Battle Lake, with its picturesque view of undeveloped lakeshore, is the same as when Ike and Nixon looked that way close to a half century ago.
