Fair

The East Otter Tail County

Classic summertime fun

Marie Johnson mtjohnson@perhamfocus.com

The fair: it’s the classic summertime event. With fun rides, games, animals, unique foods, live entertainment and much more, fairs have something to offer everyone, no matter their age or tastes. This year’s East Otter Tail County Fair is no exception. With days dedicated to veterans, senior citizens, kids and families, the fair won’t be leaving anyone out. As always, there will be food and games on the midway, rides, a children’s barn and 4-H shows and exhibits ongoing throughout the fair, starting Thursday, July 21 and continuing through Sunday, July 24. Highlights this year will include an all-ages American Wrestling Federation show, a Lego contest, wildlife and reptile shows, kids’ activities in the park, tractor pulls, and pottery and wood carving demonstrations. There will also be live performances by the acoustic duo, Bridge Brothers, and folk musician, Brady Perl, a street dance, a talk with local author Bob Riepe and comedic acts including ventriloquist Kevin Horner and “Farmer Bob and Johnny, the World’s Funniest Tractor.” The East Otter Tail County Fairgrounds are located on the southeast side of Perham. Admission to the fair is free; grandstand events have ticket prices that are usually around $5 to $10. Parking is available on the grounds for $2, or off-grounds parking is free. Audience interaction encouraged during

Melodrama

Troupe performs weekends at Elmer’s Barbecue Debbie Irmen dirmen@perhamfocus.com Audience participation is the name of the game during the Elmer’s Barbecue melodramas staged each weekend – Friday through Sunday – in the pavilion behind the restaurant. “The audience gets to boo and hiss the characters; they are allowed to talk to them,” said Funtastics Production Company’s co-owner Laura Johnson. “We almost teach the audience how to boo and hiss.” This month’s performance, titled, “Goodbody’s Gold,” runs through July 31. The evening begins at 6 p.m., with the preshow beginning at 6:15 p.m., to allow the Elmer’s Barbecue wait staff to set the tables with food. The all-you-can-eat meal is served family-style at tables of six or eight, and includes an authentic Texas barbecue dinner of ribs, pulled pork and chicken, coleslaw, cheese potatoes, corn muffin, lemonade and iced tea. Dessert is served during intermission. The show, about two hours long, begins about 7 p.m. Tickets are $45 and available online at www.elmersbarbeque.com. The play is written by D. Chapelle, directed by Nanette JohnsonCuriskis and produced by the Fergus Falls Funtastics Theatre 8 | Summer Scene July 2016

Troupe. Johnson is in charge of props, sets, costumes and technical aspects of the production. The melodramas, in the same vein as the old Dudley Do-Right animated segments which aired as part of the “Rocky and Bullwinkle Show” during the 1960s, feature “clean, cheesy humor with a tiny bit of innuendo,” Johnson said. The plot involves Grammy Grumpree (played by Brigitte Munsterman), and her lovely daughter, Sugar Goodbody (Teresa Widiger), who own and operate the Earnest T. Goodbody Silver mine. Mr. Ignatz Fowler (Mykenzey Watchorn), a person of questionable scruples and evil purpose, plots to obtain the mine from the ladies. He is ably assisted by Teddi Bustier (Samantha Bottko), a sa-

loon lady with a zest for material things. Hero Bob Faithful (Jake Boerhave) does his utmost to thwart the villain’s plans. Tables in the pavilion are set with glass stemware and linen tablecloths and napkins. In contrast, the dinner is served on old-fashioned rustic tin plates, creating a relaxed and casual atmosphere, Johnson said. With audience participation encouraged, the actors have to be quick-witted and think on their feet, she said, “because we just don’t know what’s going to happen.” Depending on what’s happening on-stage, actors back stage will be thinking through how to bring the audience action into what’s happening in front of the curtain, she said. Last year, a man interjected himself into the play and didn’t seem inclined to leave, which left the cast wondering how to get him off-stage. The actors, all with extensive theatre backgrounds, eventually managed to work his departure from the stage into the script, she said. Actors rehearse for the performances Monday through Thursday, and perform Friday, Saturday and Sunday, as well as time spent outside of scheduled rehearsals memorizing lines, making the Elmer’s gig a significant summer time commitment, Johnson said. The August play is titled, ““Prescription: Murder,” and will run Friday, Aug. 5 through Sunday, Aug. 14. The melodrama is written by Richard Levinson and William Link, and directed by Kevin Klawitter and Michelle Curtis. Produced by the Wadena Madhatters Community Theatre are producing the play.

AYA Tournament showcases

Little Pine Lake

Jason Groth jgroth@perhamfocus.com Anglers of all ages will be taking to the water on Aug. 6 on Little Pine Lake in Perham, with the return of the Angler-YoungAngler Tournament to Paul Miller Park. The tournament is a way to introduce the younger generation to the sport of competitive fishing. Each boat must have one adult and two anglers under the age of 17 to compete in the event. “Angler-Young-Angler is a tournament series format that was originally developed by Lund Boats. They were looking for a way to get kids involved in competitive fishing and in a bigger sense to get them involved in fishing in the outdoors,” FargoMoorhead Walleyes Unlimited’s Kyle Agre said. “They developed this format of a 40-team field of one angler and two young anglers, which would be the makeup of each team. It would be conducted like any of the other adult formatted fishing tournaments that were going on at that time.” Every team that competes in the tournament will receive a prize, but the grand prize winner will be taking home a new boat package. “The winning team will go home with a Lund A-12 fishing boat, a Mercury motor and a Shorelander trailer. It is a great prize package,” Agre said. “You talk about a group of young anglers and knowing that one of those teams is going to take home a prize like that is pretty inspiring.” The top 10 teams will receive tournament plaques, while every team competing will receive some sort of prize package for participating. “Every team goes home with a prize package. Whether they are first, second, third or they are 37th, 38th or 39th, they are going to go home with a room full of prizes,” Agre said. This is the first time that Fargo-Moorhead Walleyes Unlimited will be hosting an AYA event in Perham. They have hosted the annual event in Devils Lake, N.D., Agre said, adding it’s a fantastic way to get kids fired up and excited about the sport. The Devils Lake event routinely fills up within a week of its registration opening. The Perham event is filling up quickly, with more than half of the 40 spots filled. One of the unique aspects from the event is that every team will receive the opportunity to be interviewed on stage by the tournament’s emcee. “We will bring every team up on stage after the event,” Agre said. “It doesn’t matter if they caught big fish, small fish or no fish, we are going to get them up on stage to tell their story and share a memory of the day and get their two minutes in the spotlight. It’s a fantastic way for kids to experience the outdoors and an organized event like this” 12 | Summer Scene July 2016

The tournament uses the Catch, Record and Release format, which preserves the lakes fisheries. The fish are caught and quickly returned to the lake, allowing a better chance at survival. Also, it’s way to curtail fishing limit regulations when it comes to competing in a tournament, while staying legal. “It’s an up-and-coming format for tournaments. The advantage is that we are returning that fish to the water almost immediately after we catch them,” Agre said. “It allows for the team to land the fish in the boat, get a picture of it with a ruler and release the fish immediately.” At the end of the day, the lengths that are recorded in the photos are converted to a weight based on a conversion chart that is universal for everyone in the field, and the winner is determined based on the converted weight. There is another added bonus to the format according to Agre. “It also allows teams to fish the entire day and not have to stop when they have put a limit in the live well,” Agre said. “Because, they are not putting anything in the live well. They are releasing them all. They basically can catch as many fish as they can during tournament hours and record the lengths of everyone of those fish. Each team will select their top six fish, which they will submit for scoring. It takes away the factor that we can only catch a certain number of fish during the day. It takes away the slot limit factor. Any fish that is caught, recorded and released can be submitted for scoring.” The event will take place at the boat landing at Paul Miller Park. During the day, the boaters will receive extraordinary treatment. They will have valet parking for the competitors and receive help in launching their boats. Agre said the Perham area is a fantastic area and it’s a wonderful venue to hold a tournament like this. “The city of Perham and the folks there are very supportive of the idea of getting and keeping kids involved in the outdoors,” Agre said. “They are the next generation of sportsmen that are going to care for and preserve the outdoors. It’s the next generation of people that are going to buy boats and going to be spending money on vacation rentals or vacation homes. It really is passing that on to the next generation. The community of Perham, the park and Little Pine Lake is a perfect venue for this kind of event.” While the tournament is a one-day event, the festivities kick off the evening prior at Paul Miller Park. There will be a picnic, inflatable games as well as the registration and rules meeting. The event kicks off on Saturday with the boat inspection, prior to competition. To register or for more information on the event, visit www. fmwalleyes.com. At the website, there is a drop down menu for the Little Pine Tournament. The site will include a downloadable PDF for the rules and registration for the event.

DNR Question of the Week Q: What are some tips for successfully releasing fish? A: The most important thing to remember about how to release fish without injuring them is to be prepared. Have the necessary equipment readily available: needle-nose pliers, forceps, line clipper, a soft mesh or coated landing net – and oh yes, your camera. It is critically important to minimize the time the fish is out of the water. If possible, unhook the fish while it is in the water. If taking a picture, hold larger fish horizontally with the head and body supported. Do not hold large fish vertically or by the gills or eyes. Play and land the fish as quickly as possible and moisten your hands with water to protect the fish’s slime layer and prevent post-release infections. If the fish is deeply hooked, cut the line inside the fish’s mouth. If it is deeply hooked and bleeding, consider keeping the fish to eat as long as it is of legal size in the open angling season for that species. With the state record fish program now accepting applications for catch-and-release muskie, flathead catfish and lake sturgeon, anglers with a potentially record-setting catch are encouraged to quickly measure and take a picture of the fish before releasing it. Allowing state records to be set via catch-andrelease presents an opportunity to recognize Minnesota’s outstanding fishing opportunities for these species while also formally honoring the skill of anglers who catch and release a trophy muskie, flathead or sturgeon. For guidelines, visit www.mndnr. gov/recordfish. Henry Drewes, DNR regional fisheries manager

Events and activities to kickstart

Otterfest

Kelsee Newton knewton@perhamfocus.com Multiple events will kick-start the 28th annual Otterfest in the city of Ottertail Friday and Saturday, Aug. 12-13. The demolition derby, a popular event sponsored by the Rod and Gun club, will be held at City Park at 7 p.m. Aug. 12 in Ottertail. “It was super huge last year” said Ron Grobeck, Ottertail Business Association President. The first event on Aug. 13 will be the annual pancake feed from 7 to 11 a.m., hosted by the Lions Club at the City Park. Otterfest typically draws in “hundreds” said Sara Lenz, secretary/treasurer of the Ottertail Business Association. Based on past years, popular events planned this year include the classic car show, raffle ticket drawing, a pork feed sponsored by the Buehlers, corn on the cob, minnow races, the Otter Walk, a bike rodeo and much more activities. Food vendors will be available throughout the day. 16 | Summer Scene July 2016

The Otter Walk is similar to a cake walk, except pickle jars are filled and hidden with prizes from local Ottertail businesses. A 5K run to help raise money for the children’s cancer program, A Measure of Healing Hearts for Childhood Cancer, begins at 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 13. Registration is $25 any day prior to the race, and $30 on race day. Bingo is back, and will start at 1p.m., with the bike rodeo at 3 p.m. Anyone who participates in the bike rodeo will be eligible for a chance to win one of 10 bikes that will be given away. Helmets will also be given away. The bike rodeo is a chance for kids to learn different safety precautions and other important aspects of riding a bike. The band, Castaways, will perform from 4 to 7 p.m. followed by a fireworks display at about 9:15 p.m. in City Park.

Calvary hosts 50th annual ice cream social and song fest Debbie Irmen dirmen@perhamfocus.com In keeping with its mission to thank God, share Jesus and help others, Calvary Lutheran Church will host its 50th annual ice cream social and song fest from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 14, at the church. “This is geared toward families,” said one of the organizers, Char Scheel. “It’s like the old-time social. It’s part of relationship building and getting to know people.” She and co-chairwomen, Karen Mathiason and Darlene Nelson, work with 50 to 60 volunteers who make calls and pies, perform, prepare and cook the barbecue meal, serve and cleanup, she said. “It’s a big project,” Scheel said. “People are so willing to help. Most of the time when we ask, we get a yes.” Barbecues and chips, along with pie and ice cream will be served. The popular event, started in about 1966, draws hundreds of people. Last year, about 70 pies, 24 quarts of ice cream and 80

pounds of ground beef for the barbecues were enjoyed during the one-night event. “Last year we had to go out for another two gallons of ice cream,” she said. As with any community project, many people help and donate to the cause, she said. “We’re always grateful for the donations from the community,” Scheel said. “We have a very generous community.” Among the long-time donors are KLN/Shearer’s Snacks and Thrivent. The church is “very active in the community,” Scheel said, adding that the money raised from the ice cream social and song fest will benefit the many church projects sponsored by Calvary Lutheran. Calvary’s Director of Music, Russ Bunker, will perform along with other church and community musicians. Cost for a barbecue plate is $3.50; pie and ice cream are $3; and a dish of ice cream only is $1.

Making golf

fun again

Joseph Kauffman Perham Lakeside Golf Course When it comes to getting upset with myself about a stray drive or leaving a birdie putt short (never leave a birdie putt short), I have been as guilty as the next guy. I am very competitive, as is my wife, and we can barely play a game of Sequence without getting spirited. However, over the past year I have tried to change my reaction to my golf game, asking, “Am I getting paid to do this?” or “Is life going to be any different because of what my scorecard says?” Well, I don’t know if it’s getting a little older and trying to enjoy life a little more, but because of a book that I read

last fall called “Happy Golf Starts Here,” by Bryan Skavnak, I am loving the game more, and actually even playing a little better. I love this book. It’s an awesome look at making golf fun again, like when you were a kid out on the course having fun with your buddies, learning the game, enjoying the outdoors during the five months of non-winter here in Minnesota. This book has some great insights and thoughts on what golf can mean to you and to me. The United States Golf Association started a campaign a few years ago which has been viral in sports social media called “Tee It Forward,” with the goal of speeding the time of play and making the game fun again for everyone. I love this. There is nothing wrong with moving forward a set of tees. This is about knowing your game and what you are able to do, and setting yourself up for success in having fun during your round. As an example, I have a couple of older gentlemen at Perham Lakeside who have lost some distance over the years, and now our white tees are just too much for them. Once they acknowledged this and started playing from the red tees (which are often considered the ladies or junior tees, which is false, as you can play from any tee you want in a recreational round), they are loving the game more because it is more accessible to them. It may have taken a bit to get used to playing from the forward tees, but teeing it forward is a great way to play, I promise. Tee it forward. Go back to playing golf for fun, for being on the course with family and friends, and enjoying the outdoors. We don’t have that many nice weather months so take advantage of them at a golf course near you.

Remove superstition to

catch fish

After being a full-time guide for 21 years, I’ve had the good fortune to be able to spend lots and lots of hours with fish — and fishing, of course. And after all of those intense guide seasons, one thing that I know for certain is that there is nothing more corrosive to the fishing spirit then superstition. Most fishing superstitions or “rules” were passed from one generation to the next with absolutely no legitimacy. For instance, a long time ago, a disgruntled angler couldn’t get a bite one day when the wind was from the east, and it just happened to rhyme with the word “least” so it became a rule. Wow, and that’s kept fishermen suspicious about east winds? But those myths still exist and they still inhibit a fisherman’s confidence. I know this because nearly every day I’m reminded by my fishing guests that those ideas are still a living part the contemporary fishing school of thought. Last season a gentleman I had on board watched as I applied sunscreen on my ears and arms. A moment later I started baiting up the lines. In a very concerned voice he asked why I didn’t wash the sunscreen off my hands before I baited the lines because just the night before he read an article about how fish can smell foreign matter etc. I took his worm in my greasy fingers and took my sunscreen and applied a generous dosage to his bait and had him fish with it. He didn’t fish more than two or three minutes before he caught his first keeper walleye of the day. He felt very misinformed. We’ve all been clobbered with these rules — is fishing really that simple that such stark conclusions can be made? Yes fish can smell sunscreen but it doesn’t mean they won’t like the taste. What about all the rules about the weather? Do fish really bite the least when the wind’s from the east? What about those cold fronts or falling barometers? Sure they change the fish but how badly? First of all, you have to fish to find out. That’s a big deal. You don’t know until you try — sounds more like a work ethic line doesn’t it? When I approach a cold-front day I plan on moving a lot. I keep my boat in constant motion, and don’t try to make fish feed, if they don’t want to bite that’s alright, I just move to the next fish or the next spot. 22 | Summer Scene July 2016

I make long moves — instead of looking for active fish in a mid-sized zone on a lake, I’ll cover larger quadrants trying to find areas that aren’t as severely affected, plus I try to find the largest schools I can to increase my percentages. Cold-front days are fast paced for me and my guests — I don’t waste a single second because every second counts and I know there are fish on the lake willing to bite and I know I’ll find them. Another myth I hear a lot is, “When it gets hot walleyes go deep to find cold water.” For those of you taking a summer vacation this season and plan on doing some walleye fishing, cancel that “rule” out right away. When, and if, walleyes are instinctively drawn to deep water they do so because of their perpetual need to feed — it’s about food not comfort. On a recent morning we caught walleyes in 29 feet. Were those fish trying to cool off? If so, why were they eating our bait? Walleyes don’t know what a boat is therefore they are not afraid of the boat. They may, however, be influenced by the pressure the boat causes, not too unlike a barometric pressure. Engine noise may influence their reaction. Sure they hear and feel the vibration, but it doesn’t represent a natural threat like the presence and feel of a large predator like a northern, musky, otter, or cormorant. Walleyes don’t know what fish hooks are so we don’t need to disguise them. Larger walleyes don’t necessarily live deep. In fact, I catch my largest walleyes of the season in water under 10 feet. People have done a great job over the years personifying walleyes. The one idea I want you to take from this article is that walleyes are fish, not people. They are driven completely and utterly by instinct. When they do something, whatever it may be, they do it in response to many variables in their environment that tell them to do it in order to survive — it’s not a cognitive battle nor is it emotional. They just do. Grasping the very idea that fish are not thinkers will help you to discover easier fishing. It doesn’t mean it’s OK to be a sloppy fisherman, it should just help guide you towards confidence on the lake. Ross Hagemeister, meisterguideservice.com
