BLACK POWDER RENDEZVOUS

SET FOR AUGUST 21-23

BY TOM HINTGEN

Otter Tail County Correspondent

This year marks the 35th Lake Country Mountaineers Black Powder Club Annual Rendezvous. The big event will be held from Friday, Aug. 21, through Sunday, Aug. 23, at the Pioneer Grounds in Perham. The times are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday. “Each year we want visitors to the rendezvous to take the opportunity and go back in time,” says Pat Hodnefield, Lake Country Mountaineers Black Powder Club member. Visitors can watch demonstrations on black powder and muzzle loading, flintlock weapons and more. “We provide a glimpse at what is was like to hunt in the 1800s,” said Hodnefield. “Events at our encampment are a pre-1840s re-enactment.” To get to this unique annual gathering, take County Road 8 one mile north of town. Major activities include Hawkn-Knife, Adults Only Axe Throw, Primitive Bow and Paper Range. Pets are welcome, but event organizers request that pets

Offering a glimpse at life in the 1800s, area mountain men take part in shooting competitions. With a powerful blast, this man shot his muzzleloader on the range at the Black Powder Rendezvous.

Annual get-togethers or rendezvous were held to give mountain men an opportunity to socialize, trade and offer up some friendly competition. When assembled, they became small villages for a day or two.

be kept on leashes. Also, they want pet owners to clean up after their pets. The Lake Country Mountaineers club began in 1980. The first five members were Dale Wright, Jerry Greenwood, Bill Rose, Alfred Dewey and Jerry Lucking. The current clubhouse, which is a log building, was moved into place in 1983. “Today’s members continue the traditional rendezvous,” said Hodnefield, “with a re-enactment of those once hosted by the fur companies.” He and fellow members emphasize that the present-day rendezvous is intended to keep history alive by depicting life in the wilderness of what would someday become America. Before the 1840s, the fur companies held an annual rendezvous and mountain men would gather to trade their furs for supplies, money, clothing or other goods.

“During the rendezvous many would compete with each other for fun having shooting competitions or playing games,” said Hodnefield. “One game was called Hawk-N-Knife. The men would take a stump or log and practice throwing a tomahawk or knife into it.” Canvas tents were used by men for temporary shelters. They would pitch them together to form encampments or a small town. People would trade spices, tobacco, beads and other items. In the mid-1970s the Perham Chamber of Commerce approached Dale Wright and asked him to come up with something of more attraction to Perham’s Pioneer Days. A lease from the city for some land adjacent to the Pioneer Grounds was given to the newly created Lake Country Mountaineers Black Powder Club. Organization for the first rendezvous be-

gan shortly thereafter. An August shoot date was chosen. For year two, trophies and ribbons were part of the shoot. In year three an original tipi was brought to Perham by Cam Stale of Staples. Members said to one another, “That’s really great.” Each year since 1983, workers have continued to maintain the current clubhouse which was formerly a log barn. The original emblem of the club was made by Dale Wright. It was a picture of a mountain and lake behind it, with a mountain man standing in the front. Years later, the emblem became the otter in coordination with Otter Tail Power Company. For more information, e-mail lakecountrymountaineersbpc@yahoo. com

CHASING SUMMER:

Paddle boarding at night can be done with LED lights mounted on the bottom of a board, said Elle Chase. This is one of the tour options offered by Chase Crew.

TEEN’S BUSINESS MAKES A SPLASH IN LAKES COUNTRY ELIZABETH HUWE

ehuwe@perhamfocus.com

It started out as helping on her family’s resort, said Elle Chase of her introduction to kayaking and paddle boarding. At Ethel Beach Resort, Elle would help move the equipment around for visitors or just take a paddle across to the other side of the lake to kill some time. “It’s been kind of in my blood,” she said of being around the water, and she’s always doing something. “I’m kind of a 100 miles per hour person.” Knowing this, it’s maybe less of a surprise that the 17-year-old started Chase Crew over the summer of 2014 with six paddle boards to rent and the help of her dad. 6 | SUMMER SCENE AUGUST 2015

“Those ended up being gone all summer,” Elle said of those first boards. All it took was one banner saying there were paddle boards to rent, and they were booked up. This year, they decided to go even bigger, with paddle boards, kayaks and other lake gear for sale or rent. “Chase Crew, we’re all about summer fun,” Elle said. “If it’s not fun, then it’s not there (at the store). I really want to equip people with the ability to have fun.” “We’re on our second semi-load of paddle boards,” said Elle. There are 200 boards in each load. “It was just crazy, but it’s been really great and super fun.” Instead of going to the resort, Chase Crew now has three locations for picking up rentals or buying equipment: Fergus

Falls, Battle Lake and Ottertail. Elle said she also plans to expand in the near future, possibly to Perham, Alexandria or Detroit Lakes. Having the business has also been a learning experience for Elle. She said the most important lesson she’s learned so far is that, when working with people, attitude can make all the difference. “It’s all about your attitude, not the other person’s,” Elle said. “You can control any situation by how you react.” “Whatever attitude you give off, other people respond to that,” Elle said, adding that meeting so many people has been her favorite experience with the business so far. “You can really get to know someone in like, five minutes, and I love that.” Is there anything else that the teen would rather be doing this summer?

Elle Chase is the 17-year-old who runs Chase Crew, which sells and rents paddle boards, kayaks and other lake gear in the area.

“I love it,” she replied, after pondering the question for a moment. “I mean, I get to have my own schedule. And, I’m not at the stores 90 percent of the time – I’m doing deliveries or I’m at the lake.” “I do have four employees, so we kind of break some of it up,” Elle said, but she does handle all of the phone calls, paperwork and coordinating. “Yes, part of me would like to be hanging out at the lake with friends,” Elle said. “But, I can still do that. It works.” Elle said she was first attracted to paddle boarding because of its versatility and how easy it was to transport. “I’d just strap a board to the top of my VW Bug with the top down, get my dog and go,” Elle said. Her black lab, Jesse, often tags along on the trips – and she is even included on the Chase Crew logo. Versatility was another paddle board bonus, Elle said. She enjoys being able to paddle around or even do yoga or planks on the board as a workout. Elle said many first-timers are often unsure of whether they will enjoy the products, or if it will be too difficult. But, after they (literally) get their feet wet, many customers get hooked. “Anyone can do it, and you don’t have to be athletic,” Elle said of paddle boarding, remembering a rental client who last summer and just paddled while on her knees. This year, Elle said, the woman got a board of her own, was standing and going on longer trips. In addition to the sales and rentals, Chase Crew offers group tours, both during the day and at night, as schedules allow. “There’s LED lights on the bottom of the boards,” Elle said 8 | SUMMER SCENE AUGUST 2015

of the night tours. “You can see, like, 10 feet into the water. But, I could see these bullheads fighting and turtles… it’s really cool.” Chase Crew also has kayaks and “Maui Mats,” which are large, foam mats that float while people stand or lounge on them available for sale and rent. For more information about Chase Crew, visit www.facebook.com/chasecrewbiz or call Elle at 218-371-1249.

A repurposed school bus provides a signature look for the local paddleboard entrepreneur, Elle Chase. Just look for the bus at the corner of State Highway 78 and County Highway 1. It is the hub for rentals and sales in the Perham area.

The Otter Fest parade features vehicles, tractors, and everything in-between each year, captivating all onlookers.

ERIC HENDRICKX

Taking to the streets in Ottertail on August 7 and 8 of this year will be the annual Otter Fest town celebration. As per custom, Friday evening will consist of the popular demo-derby held at the city park under the water tower. The Ottertail Rod and Gun Club will again sponsor this fan favorite event set to begin at 7 p.m. Several vendors will be available for one’s favorite food and beverages during the demo-derby, so large appetites are always welcome. Saturday’s long line up of events begins with the annual Ottertail Lions pancake feed held at the city’s community center. Soon thereafter, the 5K Healing Hearts 5K run will begin. The entry fee for the 5K run is $25, with proceeds going to help kids battling childhood cancers. This year’s Otter Fest 5K will also ramp-up their prizes and awards for top finishers to encourage all area runners to

lace‘em up and get out there on the course. At 10 a.m. the car show starts, also held underneath the city water tower. Otter Fest’s Grand Parade takes off down the road at 11 a.m. with many fun and exciting floats, as always. Whether a person is there to grab some candy or just take in the sights, the Grand Parade rolls through town to the enjoyment of all onlookers. Immediately following the parade, the children’s carnival games will be running full steam for all kids present at the celebration. This year’s games are highlighted by the Pool of Corn, with a hidden ping pong ball inside for the first young treasure hunter to discover. All games at the children’s carnival will be played for prizes and will continue until 1:30 p.m. Bingo is back at Otter Fest and will begin at 1 p.m, held in the community center by the Ottertail Business and Community Association. At 1:30, City Park plays host to numerous games for adults and children alike. Guests of all ages will have the opportunity

to wear off some sugar-filled energy while playing for other small prizes. The children’s ‘Otter Walk’ and bike rodeo take place at 2:30 this year with the Otter Walk described as similar to a cake walk with hidden jars full of prizes from local Ottertail businesses. Due to their overwhelming popularity at their outdoor concert held in Ottertail on July 21, Doc and the Scrubs will be back at Otter Fest playing from 3-5 p.m. next to the community center. If the morning and afternoon have you hungry for more Otter Fest, you’re in luck, as the community dinner and corn feed takes center stage at 5 p.m. Once the food settles a bit, head over to the live music area for a free street dance with music provided by the Erhard Hills Band beginning at 6:30. After the hours of cutting an asphalt rug come to an end, fireworks sponsored by the Ottertail Lions Club will explode into the night’s sky beginning at dusk, signaling the end of yet another Otter Fest.

FINN CREEK FOLK FESTIVAL 2015 ERIC HENDRICKX

ehendrickx@perhamfocus.com

Taking a step back in time, all while providing activities and entertainment for the entire family, is the continued goal for this year’s offering of Finn Creek Folk Festival. Located just a few miles outside of the town of New York Mills, this summer festival staple is back in full force, celebrating its 40th year. Everything kicks off for this two-day festival on Saturday morning with the usual served in the dining hall from 7:30 to 10 a.m. From there, guests can head over and enjoy the garden tractor, kiddie and ATV pulls beginning around 11 a.m. Saturday’s slate of music features the Slew Foot Family Band, who will delight the crowds with their band including

their six children from Gray Eagle, Minn. The family band will hold two performances on Saturday before 5 p.m. Also scheduled for Saturday will be old country music with Jeff Yungbauer, He will be performing the vocals and guitar for country and western/gospel themed music for two shows himself, both held on Saturday. Sunday also begins with a breakfast served in the morning, and proceeds with the antique tractor pull beginning at 1 p.m. The music scene on Sunday will feature two performances by the Benson Family Singers, another family band playing multiple instruments in a bluegrass genre sure to please the crowd. In addition, coming from Fergus Falls will be Marjorie Hanson with her accordion.

“We will have daily information sheets available for everyone coming to the festival that will get a more specific rundown of all entertainment and performances held each day so that nobody misses out on something they really were excited to see,” said Finn Creek Folk Festival President Dave Witikko. Loads of entertainment and activities are set to take place throughout the day at Finn Creek as well, such as food offerings. Both days, food will be available from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., consisting of concessions, Finnish treats, homemade pies and ice cream. The festival’s kitchen and dining building is the place to be for any festival goer looking to grab a bite to eat. Local area artists will also be on hand displaying their works as well as authentic Finnish products including glassware,

textiles, candy, sauna supplies and more. Many demonstrations and tours are set to take place at the festival, too, including tours of the museum, out buildings, schoolhouse, chapel and town hall. Demonstrations include the popular blacksmith shop as well as the looming exhibit. Taking place August 29 and 30, Finn Creek is located three miles east of New York Mills, then south two and half miles on Highway 106 before heading a half mile west on 340th St. Admission to the Finn Creek Folk Festival is set at $4 for adults each day, or $6 for both days. Children age 6-12 are $1 with anyone under six years old admitted for free. There will be RV parking available for the festival with a suggested donation of $20 per night. Whether of Finnish descent or not, the Finn Creek Folk Festival is sure to delight in its 40th year.

Pioneer Fest is open to all ages for free, though free will donations are encouraged. Visitors will be treated to a working pioneer village in action.

PIONEER FEST, REFRESHED AND READY FOR THROWBACK PAUL SCHMITT

pschmitt@perhamfocus.com

Pioneer Fest: it’s not time travel, but the homage to simpler times just might fool you into thinking it is. Running from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, the 45th Pioneer Fest will be held at the Perham Pioneer Village not quite one mile north of town on Highway 8. The festival, in its second year being managed by the History, Arts and Cultural Association of East Otter Tail County, has continued to change its lineup in order to “refresh the fest,” as organizer Darla Ellingson said. Based on community feedback to last year’s Pioneer Fest, there will now be live music at the band shell throughout the entire day. At 10 a.m. will be artists Marie and 24 | SUMMER SCENE AUGUST 2015

Doug performing folk and bluegrass tunes, followed at 12 p.m. by “Off Duty,” the musical persona of Detroit Lakes police officer Tim Eggebraaten, who will offer up classic and contemporary country musical stylings. The music starts to edge in towards rock at around 2 p.m. with Oakland After Hours, and Fargo-based BOOMTOWN to finish up at 4 p.m. Apart from BOOMTOWN, all of the performers are local talent. In addition to the music, Pioneer Fest also boasts a classic car show, and an art and craft sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. featuring hand-made items by regional artists, including ceramics and textiles. The vendor booths will be set up in the ballroom building. Throughout the day, some of the artists plan on offering demonstrations of their crafts, such as skinning, slab-build-

ing ceramics, and painting with alcohol inks. Other demonstrations around the festival include a tractor pull, a sawmill demo and chainsaw sculpting. Food vendors, including an ice cream stand and a beer stand, will be available, so pioneers can grab some grub right on the festival grounds. Visitors can also enjoy the several restored historic buildings that have been moved onto the grounds, including the Westby House, which is a settlers cabin, as well as a small chapel and a barn, where a free photo booth will be set up. Going on right next to Pioneer Fest will be the Black Powder Rendezvous, where the public can visit the shooting range to watch black powder firearm shooting. To end the day on a pioneer feel, bluegrass band Blue Wolf will lay down some

traditional barn dance music in the ballroom at 7 p.m., for what Ellingson called a “cultural throwback to an earlier time.” Members from the Lake Country Mountaineers will be in attendance at the dance to perform a traditional paddle dance. A cash bar and food vendors will be available. Though Pioneer Fest is free of charge

(free will donation encouraged), the dance will cost $5 to attend. Ellingson said that last year the festival was “small but successful,” with 600 total attendees. This year, she’s optimistic the attendance will grow substantially. “There’s a lot more going on at the festival this year, with the longer plan-

ning period and more media coverage,” she said. “We really want this to be a community festival, based on what the community is interested in.” Pets are allowed at the festival, though owners should bring leashes.
