During Turtle Fest, turtle races will be held Wednesday, June 17 and Friday, June 19 in City Park. Registration begins at 10 a.m., with the first race at 10:30.

Totally Turtle Fest by Elizabeth Huwe

ehuwe@perhamfocus.com

For the 31st year, Perham is preparing for its annual summer event filled with fun for people of all ages and with all sorts of interests. A key change for the 2015 festival is that it will be held over a shorter time span than in recent years – five days rather than nine. This year, Turtle Fest will be held June 17-21, Wednesday through Sunday. Even though there are fewer days on the calendar, don’t go thinking that there will be less to do during Turtle Fest. “There’s a lot of stuff packed into those five days,” said Dan Schroeder, the executive director of the Perham Area Chamber of Commerce. Wednesday, June 17 There is no better way to start off Turtle Fest than with turtle races.

4 | Summer Scene june 2015

Racers can begin registration at 10 a.m., with heats beginning at 10:30 a.m. The races are held every Wednesday at City Park in downtown Perham, next to the Chamber of Commerce’s building. Train rides on the Perham Express will be available from 10 a.m. to noon. Members of the East Otter Tail County Jaycees will also host an ice cream social at City Park from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday will also be when the first of two medallion hunts begin. Clues for the second medallion will begin Friday. The medallions will be hidden in Perham, with one clue per day released at noon on www.perham.com, in the window of the chamber building and on the Lakes 99.5 radio station. The first to find each medallion will win $500 in Perham Bucks. “Make and take” art projects will also be available for families at the Art

and Events Gallery at the History, Arts and Cultural Association. Thursday, June 18 On Thursday, activities will begin in the evening with the Second Annual Obstacle Course at Heart of the Lakes Elementary School in Perham. The event will include running, climbing, croquet, water balloons, ring toss and more. The course will be open for preschool – fourth grade aged children from 5-6 p.m. The cost is $5 per child or $10 for a family. Participating children will each receive a medal, bottle of water and a token to Goose Gang. At St. Henry’s Church, there will be a BBQ, Pie and Ice Cream Social from 5-7 p.m. The meal will be free-will offering, with proceeds going to St. Henry’s Area School.

At 5:30 p.m., the new additions to the “Waves of Discovery” mural, in the sidewalk beside Photo Magic, will be unveiled. The unveiling will be followed by a historic walking tour of downtown Perham, led by the East Otter Tail Historical Society and the History Museum of East Otter Tail County. The walk will end at the history museum, where refreshments will be served. The cost for the tour is $6. Friday, June 19 Friday also begins with a special, Turtle Fest-only bonus round of turtle races. Time and location is the same as the Wednesday races. Perham Express will also be making rounds around the downtown area from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The Perham Senior Center will have a game day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., along with a pinochle tournament. The Turtle Fest Grand Parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. near St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Due to road construction, the parade’s route will be slightly different than usual, as shown in the map. The United Way’s Pet Parade will be included as part of the Grand Parade.

Sports fans will have several options for participation and observation with the Turtle Fest 5k/10k, Wood Bat Baseball Tournament and Perham Backcourt Club Basketball Tournament going on around town. Motor enthusiasts can check out the Props Over Perham RC fun fly and “Project New Hope” motorcycle ride. Also happening in Perham will be the Perham Center for the Arts’ Craft Fair, located at the center on First Ave. N, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Swingin’ on the green

by Jason Groth

jgroth@perhamfocus.com

Bob Hope once said, “If you watch a game, it is fun. If you play at it, it’s recreation. If you work at it, it’s golf.” There are a lot of opportunities for one to ‘work,’ as the legendary Hope said, in Perham and surrounding communities. The lakes area is home to several premier golf destinations that are friendly, and challenging, to golfers of all ages and experience levels. PERHAM The Perham Lakeside Golf Course is located at 2727 450th Street in Perham, and features three nine-hole golf courses: Pine, Oak and Maple. The Maple course plays at a par 37/38, while the Oak and Pine courses are both a par 36. The course features several elevation changes, as well as natural wetlands. Perham Lakeside’s signature hole is the second hole on the Oak course, which is a par 3. Golfers have to carry the water if they want to find the green on this challenging par 3. Perham Lakeside features opportunities for league golfers as well, with men’s nine and 18 hole golf leagues on Tuesdays, while women’s leagues are on

Wednesdays. Joe Kauffman is the club manager, while golf superintendent is Geoffrey Fjosne. Nick Anderson is the head golf professional at Perham Lakeside. The course features several different rates, with a special rate that starts on Sundays at noon and runs until Tuesday at 11:59 a.m. During this time, golfers can golf 18 holes with a cart for $30 dollars. During the week, it is $53 for 18 holes with a cart, while on the weekend it is $60 for 18 holes with a cart. For more information, reservations and tee-time availability, call (218) 346-6070 or visit www.perhamlakeside. com. Perham Lakeside can be found on Twitter @perhamlakeside. BATTLE LAKE The Balmoral Golf Club has been a staple of the Battle Lake community since 1961. This classic course sits on the shores of Ottertail Lake in Battle Lake, Minn. The course is located at 28294 State Highway 78 in Battle Lake. It’s a classic 18 hole, par 72 that features tree-lined fairways. The course has been voted by Golf Digest as one of Minnesota’s “Best places to play.” The signature hole at Balmoral Golf

Course is the par 3, seventh hole. It’s a downhill shot, where you have to carry a water hazard that is lined with rocks. It sits down from the tee box. The course features 12 bunkers and 11 water hazards, spread out through the 18-hole course. The course has men’s and women’s leagues available for golfers who are interested. John Young is the Professional Golfers’ Association pro on hand at Balmoral Golf Course. It’s $34 during the week to golf 18 holes, while it is $39 on weekends. Golf carts are available. Twilight rates start at 3 p.m. daily. For more information, reservations and tee-time availability, call (218) 8645414 or visit www.golfbalmoral.com. In Ottertail, residents can call (218) 3672055. WADENA Whitetail Run Golf Course is located on 13379 Leaf River Road in Wadena, Minn. The 18 hole course is a challenge for golfers of all skill levels. The front nine is an old-school tree-lined course, it was redesigned in 1996, after it was originally developed in 1926. The back nine features a more modern style golf course that opened for play in 1996. It features june 2015 Summer Scene | 13

plush fairways and challenging greens. The course’s signature hole is the 15th hole, which is a par 5. It has water on both sides of the fairway and features a dog leg at the end of the hole. The course features women’s leagues on Tuesdays, with men’s leagues on Wednesdays. Kevin Ross is the PGA professional at the course. It’s $20 for nine holes, and $30 for 18. It’s an additional $10 for a half-cart for nine holes, and $15 for 18 holes. For more information, reservations and tee-time availability, call (218) 6317718 or visit www.whitetailrungolfcourse.com. HENNING The Oakwood Golf Course is located at 47388 County Highway 16 in Henning, Minn. The nine-hole course, which opened in 1972, is located 2.5 miles west of Henning. The Oakwood Golf Course is a ninehole regulation golf course that plays at 2,940 yards from its furthest tees. The course is a par 36. The course offers a men’s league on Wednesdays. Derek H. Dilly is the club manager. It’s $12 for nine holes, MondayFriday and $14 Friday-Sunday. With a cart for nine holes, it’s $18 for MondayThursday, and $20 for Friday-Sunday. For 18 holes, it is $18 on MondayThursday, while $20 on Friday-Sunday. With a cart on Monday-Thursday, it is $28 and $32 for Friday-Sunday. Facebook and on Twitter, @OakwoodGC. FRAZEE The Frazee Golf Course is located on 34482 State Highway 87 in Frazee, Minn. It’s a nine-hole, par 35 course that features rolling topography, with a mature tree line and water hazards. It came out strongly from the winter with very little winter kill, and is a challenging but fun course for any golfer. The signature hole of the Frazee Golf Course is the seventh hole. The seventh hole is a par 4, which rewards a great drive. It’s uphill to the green and is a challenging, yet rewarding, hole. The course features women’s leagues on Wednesdays and men’s leagues on Thursdays. It’s $16 for nine holes and $25 for 18. With a cart it is $24 for nine, $37.50 for 18. Elaine Palmer is the Frazee Golf Course manager. For more information, reservations and tee-time availability, call (218) 3343831. FRAZEE Maple Hills Golf Course is located on 12561 Maple Hills Drive in Frazee, four miles east of Detroit Lakes, Minn., on Highway 10. The nine hole course is family friendly with rolling hills. It’s a good challenge for experienced golfers and forgiving for beginners. It’s a par 36 course, and golfers have ample opportunity to find the water with their aqua driving range. The course plays at more than 3,000 yards for the nine holes, which are lined with maple trees.

Otter Jam set to rock July Fourth weekend Eric Hendrickx

ehendrickx@perhamfocus.com

Back for its second year, Otter Jam 2015 has moved to the Fourth of July weekend, in hopes of providing an entire day’s worth of rock music for the lakes area population that weekend. “Last year, Otter Jam was in the beginning of June and that was just too early,” said event organizer Joe Rice. “Not everyone is all back to the area then, and with Minnesota weather, you never know. We noticed that this immediate area seemed a little light for things to do for July 4th, other than fireworks, so it seemed to be the best fit for this year’s show.” Four bands, each described as the “best tribute band to their respective artist,” will take to the stage. The music kicks off with “Monny Ray” as a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan at 4 p.m. and will continue with the Bon Jovi tribute band, “Shot Thru the Heart” at 6

p.m. Night-cap entertainment leads off with crowd-favorite, “Freebird,” a tribute band to Lynyrd Skynyrd before the final act of ACDC’s tribute band, “Hells/Bells.” “We really worked hard to make sure we brought in the best music entertainment this year for everyone,” said Rice. “The fans all wanted Freebird back again after last year’s show and I think that just shows the enthusiasm people have for the music at Otter Jam.” Camping will be free again this year at Water Tower Park in Ottertail, right next to the concert area. Music won’t be the only draw for Otter Jam attendees. Lakes Area Concessions will be set up to serve a variety of hot eats. Jimmy’s Pizza will also be at the festival, serving up slices of their pies for any hungry concert-goer. The Ottertail Lions will manage the event’s beer garden for the duration of the music fest.

“We are very optimistic this year, in terms of numbers,” Rice said. “I am hoping for 2-3 thousand people in terms of admission this year, due to the area being flooded with visitors for the holiday weekend.” “I can’t thank the sponsors enough for everything they have done for us in helping to put on such a great event,” Rice said. “Our goal has always been to provide an entire day of fun and entertainment for an affordable price and I do believe we accomplished that again this year,” Advance tickets are $20 and the price at the gate will be $25. Tickets can be purchased at The Otter, Carr’s Lake Country Market, Perham Area Chamber of Commerce and the Brew in Perham, as well as otterjamrox.com. Gates for Otter Jam open at 2 p.m., and the festival will be held rain or shine. Those who are camping can begin setting up at noon with their paid wristband.

More than 1000 people came out for the inaugural Otter Jam in 2014. The crowd is expected to double this year because of the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Take me out to the ballfield by Jason Groth

jgroth@perhamfocus.com

The crack of the bat, the pop of the glove and the umpire screaming, ‘Strike three!’ are just a few of the sounds that people can hear throughout the area on local baseball diamonds. Amateur baseball has long been a staple in the state of Minnesota, with state tournament records dating back to 1924. The tradition of baseball can be found in local parks such as Al Krueger Field at Tuffy’s Stadium in Perham, Washington Stadium at Detroit Lakes, Russ Jacobson Field in New York Mills, the Jake Wolford Field in Dent, as well as fields across the prairie in Fergus Falls, Frazee, Pelican Rapids, Bertha, Bluffton, Henning, Wadena-Deer Creek and Vergas as part of the Countryside/Hi-10 Baseball Leagues. The Countryside League features the Dent Wildcats, Fergus Falls Hurricanes, Frazee Flames and Pelican Rapids Lakers. The Hi-10 features the Bertha Blazers, Bluffton Braves, Detroit Lakes Angels, Henning Giants, New York Milles Millers, Perham Pirates, Shockers (Wadena-Deer Creek), and the Vergas Loons. The 2015 league season began in May, and the regular season concludes in July.

Perham Pirates Since 1904, the Perham Pirates have played their amateur baseball in town, with one small break (due to World War II in the 1940s). The Pirates won the Class B Championship in 1966, defeating Brownton, 5-4. In 1967, the Pirates were defeated in extra innings by Arlington in the Class B Championship. The Pirates hope to return to post-season form under new manager James Mulcahy. 22 | Summer Scene june 2015

In 2014, the Pirates were ineligible from post-season play due to an illegal player. However, that has been cleared up for the 2015 season, and the team has been reinstated at the state level. Last year, the Pirates finished with a record of 7-6, playing a minimal schedule. That has changed for 2015. The Pirates will play more than 20 league and non-league games. Mulcahy stated that the Pirates want to bring back the community for the games. They will be hosting Little League Nights, a Fourth of July fireworks display after the annual game with Dent, bounce houses, baseball bingo, trivia contest and a movie night. The Pirates play their home games at Al Krueger Field at Tuffy’s Stadium. It’s a facility that has recently been renovated and is one of the premier baseball stadiums in Minnesota. Mulcahy added that the community has strongly supported community activities, teams and events. One of the traditional rivals for Perham has been Dent. Those two teams square off annually on the Fourth of July. Bertha Blazers The current era of Bertha Blazer baseball began during the 2007 season, behind the work of Byron Hartung, Bob Sieling and Dave Zirbes. They started the team so that some of the young baseball talent in the area could continue to play through the summer. This era of Bertha baseball has seen a lot of success, posting five straight seasons of 20 or more wins. In 2009, the Blazers broke through, earning a trip to the Class C State Tournament. They followed that up with a 24-7 record in 2010 and a Region Championship. The following season, the history continued as Bertha won a second Region Championship and their first state tournament game. The string of region championships continued in 2013, but came to a close in 2014, after defeats by the Long Prairie Predators and Detroit Lakes Angels. The Blazers are managed by Steve Riewer, who worked with Hartung when the Blazers were first resurrected. Riewer became the manager in 2012, after being a player-coach prior. Riewer mentions that the Blazers have had some good battles with the Wadena-Deer Creek Shockers, and that they have been their most intense rivalry. He adds they see a lot of Detroit Lakes as well. The team opened the season on April 26, with a contest against the Midway Snurdbirds.

ducing quality baseball teams, whether it be the little league team, Babe Ruth team or the Wildcats. He adds the community has always supported, and continues to support, baseball. Kratzke is back as manager of the Wildcats. He has been the manager of the team since the 2012 season. The Wildcats play their home games at Jake Wolford Field. One of the traditions came from a fan who shouted “Hit it over the RED Shed! However, the pole barns beyond the fence in centerfield are green. Kratzke said the statement is now a classic one-liner in the dugout and the stands during Wildcat games when Dent needs a big hit. Dent opened league play with a May 10 date at Henning. Detroit Lakes Angels The Detroit Lakes Angels return to Washington Stadium for another season. The Angels are hoping to build on a strong 2014 season, which saw them make the state tournament. This variety of Detroit Lakes Angels was reborn in 2006, after folding in 1998. Phil Kirchner and Mark Jorgenson are the managers of the Angels. Kirchner stated that the team has some young guys, with a nice mix of veterans returning to the squad. Taylor Fuhs, Bryan Buhr, Mark Jorgenson and Kirchner are the remaining original Angels. He adds they are hoping to compete for a state tournament berth, that they receive a lot of support from the community, and that they try to put on a good atmosphere for the younger players. The Angels opened the season with a match up against the New York Mills Millers.

Dent Wildcats The Dent Wildcats continue a baseball tradition in 2015 that dates back more than 100 years. Baseball has been a part of the Dent community since 1906. In 1906, Dent’s first team was the Dent Reds. Down the road, the Reds became the Dent Ramblers. The Ramblers made three appearances at the state tournament, in 1980, 1981 and 2000. The Ramblers became the Wildcats in 2002. The Wildcats are building off an 11-11 record in 2014. Last season, the Wildcats celebrated a 13-1 win over Midway, a second place finish at the Detroit Lakes Angels tournament and reclaimed bragging rights in the Fourth of July classic with Perham, 7-6. This year, the Wildcats are hoping to add a new tradition. They plan on hosting a Dent Amateur Baseball Alumni Game. As of press time, a date has not been set, but those interested can get more details from current manager, Andy Kratzke, at (701) 214-8035. Kratzke said that the community has a long history of pro24 | Summer Scene june 2015

Vergas Loons The Vergas Loons will return to the diamond for the 2015 season after a year absence. Vergas has been a proud home to amateur baseball since 1949. However, there was not a team last season. The team became the Loons during the 1963 season, and have held that moniker ever since. Vergas has played at the field they are currently at, except for the 1993-94 seasons. During those two years, the diamond was under re-construction and the team was forced to play on the road. The Loons will feature a team of young athletes with some local Vergas citizens and players from the surrounding communities as well. For Vergas, the last game of the season has traditionally been celebrated as Fan Appreciation Day, and has received strong community support. Vergas has four state tournament appearances in its history. It went to state in 1966, 1972, 1998 and 2002. A member of the Loons, A.J. Bunkowske, helped Midway to a state championship in 2010, by driving in the winning run. He was drafted out of Region 16C. Vergas and Dent hold a unique state record. The teams played in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in 1985. They combined to sell more than 1200 tickets to see a Twins game, for their sales effort, they received 10 tickets to the All-Star Game that year. Vergas began the season with a road game at Henning on May 17. Bluffton Braves Baseball started in the small community of Bluffton in 1947, and they have fielded a team every year since then. Terry Geiser is back as the manager for the Braves. He has been a part of Bluffton baseball for more than 40 years. He was

recently inducted into the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame. The Braves finished fourth in the region last year, two years removed from a state tournament appearance. Dustin Geiser said the Braves typically manage to field a competitive team with a group of committed players who are willing to show up each weekend. Bluffton’s biggest event of the season is the annual Fourth of July contest with New York Mills. Geiser adds that the Fourth of July game is always a fun one for the Braves. He also stated that the Braves have fun games with Wadena-Deer Creek. He stated that the team is usually made up of graduates from New York Mills and Wadena-Deer Creek. Bluffton is rich in family tradition. Geiser said that a lot of the same names can be found in the starting line up in every decade since the team started, and the community takes pride in offering a fair playing environment. Bluffton opened the Hi-10 season against rival WadenaDeer Creek on May 10.

New York Mills Millers The New York Mills Millers are hoping for another strong season in 2015. Last year, the Millers advanced to the Regional Tournament, only to be defeated by the Shockers in the opening round. Josh Hendrickx is back at the helm for the Millers. He is in his fifth season as a player/manager for the team. The Millers make their home at Russ Jacobson Field in New York Mills. The Millers return several key players from last year’s squad. Returning will be Jeff Hamann and Alex Helmeke, who provide some punch in the middle of the line-up. The Millers will continue an annual tradition on Friday, July 3 when they host the Bluffton Braves. The 7:30 p.m. start is followed by a fireworks display. Hendrickx said the Millers share a friendly rivalry with the Bluffton Braves, Shockers and the Perham Pirates. The Pirates and the Millers squared off at Russ Jacobson Field, while the Millers return the favor with a trip to Tuffy’s Stadium on Sunday, June 14 at 7 p.m. The Millers opened the season with a contest against the Frazee Flames on Saturday, May 2.
