Turtle Fest: Perham’s ultimate summer celebration Marie Johnson editor@perhamfocus.com It’s the ultimate in family fun: kids’ games, a big parade, train rides, a magic show, turtle races and so much more.

It’s nine full days of activities, planned to please all ages and interests.

It’s Turtle Fest.

And it’s back in Perham for its 30th year.

“It’ll be a good time for people,” said Dan Schroeder, executive director of the Perham Area Chamber of Commerce.

“Coming to Perham, coming to experience our way of life, coming to our lake area, and then having this summer celebration on top of that... it’ll be a good time.”

The chamber has resumed a leadership role with the festival after handing the reins over to a group of volunteers a few years ago. Turtle Fest was later taken over by the Perham Lions, who last year chose to scale back their involvement.

For a short time, the fate of the festival was unknown. What was known was that it was going to take the full support of the community to ensure Turtle Fest’s future. Perham was called to action – and it answered. Business owners, civic organizations and individual residents got behind this summer’s festival, helping to organize activities and making donations to ensure Turtle Fest’s success.

“The community has stepped up for their summer community event,” said Schroeder. “We’re very thankful to our community for stepping up, not only financially, but also to the groups who 4 | Summer Scene June 2014

stepped up to coordinate some of the events.”

The result of those efforts is a nineday-long festival as chock-full of events as ever, with many old favorites returning, and some promising new things planned.

FIRST, WHAT’S NEW: Pet Parade United Way of Otter Tail County has come up with a new way for kids to have fun, be creative, interact with animals and other people, and all while raising money for a good cause.

The first-ever Pet Parade, taking place

during Turtle Fest’s Grand Parade (more on that later), will feature families and their pets – dogs, rabbits, ponies and other domesticated animals, except for cats, which are excluded.

Many of the pets will be donned in full costume, and owners can win prizes for categories such as ‘Most Unusual Pet’ and ‘Best Overall Costume.’ There will also be an award for ‘Best Stuffed Animal Display,’ as stuffed animals may also be entered.

It’s an event-within-an-event that promises to be as much fun for the spectators as the participants.

New to Turtle Fest this year is the addition of the Miss Perham Pageants, which include competitions for Miss Perham, Miss Heart of the Lakes and Miss Perham’s Outstanding Teen. The new tie-in with Turtle Fest makes sense – pageant winners have a presence at the Turtle Races all summer long. The pageant will be held Saturday, June 21 at Perham High School at 7:30 p.m.

Proceeds from the entry fees will go toward United Way’s Imagination Library.

Vintage Motorcycle Show Local man Paul Buendiger, who in the past has organized an annual motorcycle ride as a fundraiser for Dreams for Kids, will this year be holding a vintage motorcycle show instead, with help and support from his wife, Kaie.

Funds raised at the show will go to the local children’s charity, just as funds raised from the ride used to.

The show will feature at least 50 vintage bikes, 25 years old or older, including some unusual, unique or smaller bikes – “stuff that you don’t see every day on the street,” according to Buendiger.

The bikes will come from all around the region, and will be in various conditions. Some may be for sale.

The bikes will be on display throughout Turtle Fest, June 14-22, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, in the building next door to Brew Ales and Eats on Main Street.

People are invited to stop by any time. A $5 entry fee is requested, and additional donations will be accepted.

More new stuff The two museums in town will be getting in on Turtle Fest this year, offering a

Kids’ History Mystery Tour, geocaching through a ‘maze’ and a community photography exhibit.

Perham retail businesses will also be getting more involved with Turtle Fest, offering a prize drawing for those who shop at participating stores June 2-21.

Shoppers will be able to sign up to win $500 in Perham Bucks at participating retailers. The lucky winner will be announced by June 23.

While not a new event for Perham, the Miss Perham Pageants will be new to Turtle Fest this year. The pageants will take place at the Perham High School auditorium on June 21, at 7:30 p.m. A new Miss Perham, Miss Heart of the Lakes and Miss Perham’s Outstanding Teen will all be crowned.

Other new events will include Chinese Yo-Yo and Kendama (Japanese toy) demonstrations, an ice cream social, a magic show by local magician Nick Bretz (a.k.a.

ImagiNick), a Kids’ Obstacle Course, and a scavenger hunt golf game.

A Farmer’s Market will be going on Wednesday, June 18, and the city-wide garage sale will be held Saturday, June 21.

RETURNING FAVORITES: Grand Parade Every year, the parade is the icing on Turtle Fest’s cake.

Consistently featuring 80-100 floats and big trucks, costumed characters, marching bands and plenty of other funloving participants, the parade is always sure to please people of all ages.

This year’s parade will feature three area high school marching bands, appearances by Victor the Viking, Clifford the Big Red Dog and Super Hero Word Girl, and a chance for spectators to win prizes through a cell phone competition.

“It’ll be bigger and better than before,” said Tyler Krumweide, the leading organizer of the parade. “Come out, relax, enjoy the parade and shop Perham.”

The parade route will be the same as last year, starting at Perham High School and making its way past St. Henry’s Area School before heading toward 8th Avenue SW via 3rd Street SW. Medallion Hunts Amateur sleuths enjoy this annual ‘treasure’ hunt around town, which offers seekers the chance to win cash prizes.

This year, two medallions will be hidden in separate locations around town, for two separate hunts. The first hunt will

kick off at noon on Saturday, June 14, with the second beginning Wednesday, June 18.

Clues to where the medallions are hidden can be found online at www.perham.com, or heard on the radio at Lakes 99.5FM. The hunts will last until the medallions are found.

The first people to find the medallions will each win $500.

Turtle Races At the heart of Turtle Fest are its Turtle Races. The races, which started in 1978, were so popular that they became the inspiration behind Turtle Fest.

Held every Wednesday all summer long at Turtle Park in downtown Perham, an extra race time will be held during the festival. Races will start at 10:30 a.m. (registration at 10 a.m.) on Wednesday, June 18 and Friday, June 20.

Art in the Park Artists and crafters from around the region will display and sell their handmade wares outside the Perham Center for the Arts on Friday, June 20, all day.

There will be live music on the grounds throughout most of the day.

Arvig Summer Fun Event Arvig, a Perham-based telecommunications company, always draws a large crowd with this annual community event, which features food and activities for kids. It will be taking place this year

More returning favorites Many of the old crowd-pleasers will be back again this year, including a demolition derby, Props Over Perham Fun Fly featuring remote-controlled airplane demonstrations, community breakfasts, sports tournaments, and an American Idol-inspired singing competition.

This brand-new event promises to amp things up in Ottertail.

Featuring both local and touring country and classic rock bands, this half-day-long music festival will start at 4 p.m. (gates open two hours earlier) and finish around 10:30 p.m.

The Kentucky Headhunters, a County Music Association award-winning group, will headline, with other professional performances by Freebird (a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band) and Jeremiah James Korfe, a musician from Clarissa, Minn., known for his stint on the reality TV dating show “Sweet Home Alabama.” They will perform on a 32x34’ covered main stage with a top-of-the-line sound system.

On a side stage, local groups of young musicians will perform, such as the Perham band, Border Patrol.

Camping will be available on site for those who prefer to stay overnight.

Ronald McDonald House Ride – Saturday, June 14 Riders, start your engines. The 13th annual Ronald McDonald House Motorcycle Ride in New York Mills will be held Saturday, June 14 with camping and concerts beginning on Thursday June 12.

Rain or shine, the ride will take off from the New York Mills VFW along U.S. Highway 10 at noon. Registration for the ride will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

After the ride, there will be a hog roast, door prizes, live bands, and a burnout contest. The public is welcome to attend.

Great American Think-Off – Saturday, June 14 The Cultural Center in New York Mills will host its popular battle of the minds at the Think-Off on Saturday, June 14 at the New York Mills School auditorium. The debate will begin at 7 p.m.

Finalists for the 22nd annual event were chosen based on their essays for the topic “Love or fear: which motivates us more?”

Jason Steck and Paul Terry will argue that fear is the greater motivator while Therese Helker and Jennifer Nelson promote the power of love. All are from Minnesota.

Fourth of July Fireworks – Friday, July 4 Celebrate America’s birthday with baseball and fireworks at Krueger Field and Tuffy Stadium on Friday, July 4.

The game will start at 7:30 p.m., with the Perham Pirates taking on the Dent Wildcats.

Depending on the weather and the baseball game, fireworks are expected to begin around 10 p.m.; somewhat later if the skies are clear.

Admission for the game and fireworks is $3 for ages 18 and up, $1 for students and children 12 or under get in for free.

The long and lovely road Otter Trail Scenic Byway beckons travelers with beautiful scenery, historic sites and inviting communities lina belar for the focus From pines to prairie, past thousands of lakes and winding rivers, filled with discovery at every turn, scenic byways lead travelers along paths that capture the best of Minnesota.

There are 21 Scenic Byways in the state, several of which are also designated as National Scenic Byways. In addition to their scenery, the routes were selected for their cultural, historical, natural and recreational qualities.

In Otter Tail County, the Otter Trail Scenic Byway connects the cities of Perham, Battle Lake, Fergus Falls and Pelican Rapids in a circular route that travels past inviting towns, historical sites, state parks, and the serenely beautiful scenery of the west central lakes district.

Highway signs featuring a cartoon otter lead the way along the byway. The sign was developed by Chamber of Commerce directors from Perham and Fergus Falls at a time when the scenic byways were first proposed. Interestingly enough, in

a recent marketing survey, a majority of people thought this was the official logo for Otter Tail County. It’s not, but it’s still a friendly face to follow.

The circuitous route is 150 miles long and makes a great day trip – one that can be done time and again with different goals in mind.

Say, for example, that your idea of a good time is a variety of outdoor activities. In that case, the first go-round to take should be one that includes exploration of the state and county parks along the Otter Trail.

About a half-hour south of Perham, off Minnesota State Highway 78, is Glendalough State Park. To get there, travelers pass by several scenic lakes, including Otter Tail Lake, the largest in the county. There are places to stop and park at Glendalough, but don’t linger too long if you want to visit all the parks along the byway in one day. At Glendalough, there are six undeveloped lakes to enjoy and hiking trails of varying lengths.

Back in the car, turn south to Battle Lake and then east on Minnesota Highway 210 to Vining. At Vining, check out the

unique giant sculptures the town is known for and then head south toward Urbank before turning west to Inspiration Peak.

At 1,750 feet above sea level, Inspiration Peak is the highest point in the county, and one of the highest in the state. There is a steep, but short, path to the summit. From there, on a clear day, you can see for miles around.

At this point, you might want to head toward Fergus Falls. On the way, you’ll run into the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center, where a nature trail and boardwalk wind through restored grasslands and wetlands.

Visit Fergus Falls, then head north on County Highway 1 toward Phelps Mill County Park, where a picturesque 1889 flour mill has been preserved, along with a historic bridge over the Otter Tail River. One of the best naturally regulated waterways in the country, the river offers numerous opportunities for fishing, swimming, tubing and canoeing.

which goes north to Pelican Rapids. At Pelican Rapids, go east on Highway 108 to the entrance of Maplewood State Park, where it is possible to spend the rest of the afternoon driving through lush woods, swimming in clean, clear lakes or hiking a treasure trove of trails.

People find Maplewood beautiful all year long, but it’s spectacular in the fall, when the basswood, oak, and sugar maple trees create a palette of colors hard to find elsewhere.

From Maplewood, the Otter Trail leads back to Perham, where a variety of options for dinner can be found as you wind down your trip.

There’s much to be seen along the Otter Trail Scenic Byway: art, museums, historical markers, quaint gift shops and clever thrift stores. And what about all those secret spots to fish, or places to stop and take a stunning photograph?

The Otter Trail connects so much worth seeing that it’s hard not to be overwhelmed. Just remember: this is something you can do again and again.

MUSEUMS In Perham, the In Their Own Words Veterans Museum is a one-of-a-kind museum based entirely on the oral his-

tories of area veterans. Also in Perham, the History Museum of East Otter Tail County provides fascinating glimpses into the people, places and events of the area.

In Battle Lake, the Prospect House and Civil War Museum holds the remarkable history of one man’s family and his experiences as a soldier in the Civil War. The Otter Tail County Historical Museum in Fergus Falls is sometimes referred to as one of the best county museums in the state, known for its interpretive exhibits and and exceptional research library.

HISTORICAL MARKERS Eleven miles south of Perham, on Highway 78, a historical monument and interpretive sign marks the original town site of Ottertail City, on Otter Tail Lake.

Established in 1858, Ottertail City was the first county seat. Because everyone believed the railroad would come through the city, it developed rapidly into a booming community. By 1870, there were over 1,000 residents, most of them living in tents. To serve the town, there were blacksmith shops, carpenter shops, a brewery, a wholesale liquor store, and 36 saloons, where all kinds of gambling flourished.

When the Northern Pacific Railroad chose a route further to the north, the town disappeared, almost overnight, and the county seat moved to Fergus Falls.

Later, when the Soo Line Railroad was constructed in 1904, a new Ottertail City was built a few miles to the east of Highway 78, on Highway 108.

About midway down the eastern shore of Otter Tail Lake is a historical marker for the Craigie Flour Mill. James G. Craigie came to Minnesota and built a dam on the creek that runs into Otter Tail Lake at Balmoral, where he also built a grist mill. His enterprise, “Snow Flake Flour,” became a great success.

The first historical monument in Otter Tail County was erected in 1928 at Old Clitherall, the first permanent settlement of Europeans in the county. It was founded by the Cutlerites, a branch of the Mormons who fled religious persecution in Illinois. The marker for the now vanished settlement of “Old Town” is two miles from the present town of Clitherall, named for a U.S. land officer, George B. Clitherall.

Phelps Mill, from which the county park takes its name, was built in 1888 along the banks of the Otter Tail River.

so low that the mill had to be closed.

In 1965, the mill and the grounds were established as a county park. The mill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the mill are display panels on each floor explaining the process and machinery.

Pelican Rapids lays claim to the oldest resident of North America, that of “The Minnesota Woman.” In 1931, a highway crew discovered the skeletal remains of a young woman believed to be at least 10,000 – and possibly as many as 20,000 – years old, a member of a race who lived virtually in the shadow of glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age. The historical marker is located three miles north of Pelican Rapids, on U.S. Highway 59.

ART The new Perham Center for the Arts, housed in the former St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, has hosted several exhibits and concerts, and is planning many more.

The Lakes Area Community Center in Battle Lake sponsors a 13-week summer concert series called “Come To The Lakes,” which includes well-known area groups as well as some very talented local artists. Also in Battle Lake, Art of the Lakes gallery fea10 | Summer Scene June 2014

tures the work of 125 visual artists.

In Vining, artist Ken Nyberg has used the whole town as a backdrop for his giant sculptures. A giant clothespin, a pair of pliers squishing a bug, potted cactus, deer and an elephant made mostly of lawn mower blades are just a few of the current line-up. One of Nyberg’s sculptures, a giant otter, is located in the city of Ottertail, at the intersection of Highways 78 and 108.

Fergus Falls contains two important galleries – the Kaddatz and Lake Region Art Gallery, as well as the renowned Center for the Arts. Formerly a movie theatre and vaudeville house, the Center for the Arts presents high-quality music, dance and theatre programs all year long.

Also, the Minnesota State Community and Technical College, M-State in Fergus Falls, hosts a variety of art exhibits and programs that are open to the public.

PLACES TO PHOTOGRAPH AND ENJOY NATURE Rush Lake, to the east of Highway 78 where it enters the Otter Tail River, and the small lake to the west are great places to see wildlife. At sunset, it’s often possible to capture a memorable picture.

old bridge approaches.

Glendalough State Park has abundant wildflowers and wildlife. Sit quietly someplace for a while and something is sure to happen. Eagles are seen more frequently in the county than they used to be.

Osprey nests are often found atop power line poles or other tall poles.

Battle Lake has some interesting buildings to photograph. In late afternoon, check out the wood buildings north of the grain elevator.

Nyberg’s sculptures in Vining are photogenic anytime. A cloudy or hazy day will give interesting results.

The historic State Hospital in Fergus Falls is worth a photograph or two.

Recently spared from the wrecking ball, its future is still unknown. For more information, contact the Otter Tail County Historical Society.

In addition to its historical importance, Phelps Mill is probably the most widely photographed and painted site in the county. Go on a sunny day when the red of the mill really stands out.

Maplewood State Park is a photographer’s paradise in fall, when beautiful pictures are assured. All year long, the park has vistas to capture, as does the road between Maplewood and Perham.

Local motor enthusiasts introduce two new seasonal events Marie Johnson editor@perhamfocus.com If you have an eye for vintage or unique cars, trucks or motorcycles, you’re in for some real treats this summer.

Local motor enthusiasts have created two new seasonal events in lieu of the annual Perham car show, which will not be held this year.

The Perham Classic Cruise-Ins and Hot Rod Hangouts are both recurring events that will take place one evening a month, all summer long. The Cruise-Ins are held the third Friday of every month in downtown Perham, from 5-9 p.m.

Hot Rod Hangouts are held the second Sunday of every month from 4-6 p.m., in various locations including Perham, New York Mills, Vergas and Ottertail.

Both events are geared toward the ‘car crowd,’ offering opportunities for taking the ‘toys’ out for a spin and talking some shop. The public is more than welcome to attend; share in some ‘car talk’ with the experts, or just browse.

Perham Cruise-Ins “There’s no such thing as too much fun.”

That’s the thought behind the Perham Classic Cruise-Ins. Every third Friday of the month, all summer long, classic cars and motorcycles of all colors, makes and models will line the streets of downtown Perham.

Meanwhile, their drivers and riders will gather at local restaurants and stores, grabbing a bite to eat and socializing.

Some even bring lawn chairs with them, setting up a temporary ‘camp’ on Main Street’s sidewalks.

The Cruise-Ins started May 16, and the first one was deemed a success after a strong turnout despite chilly weather.

People showed up from all over the area, including Perham, Detroit Lakes, Vergas, Park Rapids and other communities.

Frank Vorderbruggen, a leading organizer of the Cruise-Ins, said he’s hoping as many as 100 cars will show up at future events, as the weather warms and people get more antsy to get their classic cars and bikes out of the garage.

“I want to fill the streets,” he said.

“There are a ton of collector cars in the area, and a ton of bikes, and people are just frothing at the mouth to get them out and show them off.”

Open to all classic car and bike owners, the Cruise-Ins have no formalities, no judges, and no prizes. They simply

“You just show up, have a burger, and talk with other car and bike people,” said Vorderbruggen. “It’s just a fun atmosphere. There’s no such thing as too much fun.”

Vorderbruggen and his friend, Mike Yokum of Perham Auto Repair, modeled the Cruise-Ins after a similar event held in Detroit Lakes every summer.

They talked to the owners of The Brew and The Station House restaurants to get them on board, and then approached the Perham Chamber and city officials, all of whom “were all for it,” according to Vorderbruggen.

The Cruise-Ins are intended to bring attention to Perham’s Main Street area restaurants and shops, some of which will offer special deals and extended evening hours in return.

“We thought it would be a nice way to promote Perham’s downtown district,” said Vorderbruggen. “Anything I can do to give back to the community.”

Cars may park up and down Main Street and its side streets, with reserved parking offered on the north side of Main Street and in the parking lot behind City Hall.

No special criteria needs to be met to take part in the Cruise-Ins. Vorderbruggen suggests that classic car and bike owners simply “let your pride be your guide.”

friends this past winter, soon after learning that the car show would not be held. Wanting to fill that hole – and even expand on it – they created the monthly hangouts.

“We wanted to make something where motor enthusiasts – cars, trucks, bikes, whatever – had a place to get together with other motor enthusiasts to talk cars,” said Weatherhead. “It’s a hangout place for hot rodders or people who are interested in motor sports of different kinds. A forum for everybody to get together and talk motors.”

The hangouts are not just for classic cars. They’re open to all makes, models, styles and conditions of vehicles. Flyers for the hangouts say “all motorheads welcome.”

“Whatever it is, if you’re proud of it and you want to talk about it, bring it down,” said Weatherhead.

The first hangout, held May 11 at the Perham Dairy Queen, “turned out very nice,” according to Weatherhead. “It was wonderful. We had a total of 31 vehicles there... Especially with it being on Mother’s Day, I thought the turnout was just terrific.”

The next Hot Rod Hangout is scheduled for Sunday, June 8 at The Otter Supper Club in Ottertail from 4-6 p.m.

Weatherhead said the July hangout will be held in New York Mills, at a location yet to be announced. The August hangout will likely take place somewhere in Vergas. For updated locations and other information, visit the Jems and Jalopies Motor Club Facebook page.

Finger-lickin’ food and fun At Perham’s Second Annual Rib Cook-Off Elizabeth Huwe ehuwe@perhamfocus.com Looking for a sizzling good time complete with ribs, music and games? The Perham Lions’ Second Annual Rib CookOff is sure to hit the spot.

“I was told it was the ‘event of the summer,’” Perham Lion Mark Schmidt, the cook-off’s chairperson, said after last year’s event.

Rain or shine, cookers will kick off on the morning of Saturday, June 28 at 157 Second Street SW in Perham (outside the former United Community Bank building).

Fun for everyone else will begin at noon with live music by Dan Holt, Schmidt said. There will also be a bean bag tournament.

Food will be served around 4 p.m.

Entries at the Cook-Off are evaluated by a team of judges.

Organizers plan to have 25 teams competing in two divisions: the main contest and Yellowjacket’s Choice. Prizes will be awarded through fourth place for the main contest. Yellowjacket’s Choice will have first and second place titles.

Rose City BBQ took first place in the main contest last year, with Kicking Boar BBQ taking the Yellowjackets’ Choice honors.

Only the ribs will be judged for the competition. Judges will be looking at the taste, tenderness and texture of the

ribs. Appearance will be used as a tie breaker, should a tie occur.

All of the proceeds from the cookoff go toward supporting Yellowjacket Activities for the Perham-Dent School District.

At the 2013 cook-off, the community and attendees raised $5,000 to fund programs.

As of mid-May, 15 cookers had registered and reserved their spots for this year’s contest. Those interested in seeing how their ribs stack up against the competition may enter through June 14. Call Mark Schmidt at 298-2368 for more information.

Teams must supply their own equipment and power in addition to conforming to Minnesota Department of Health food handling requirements.

historic churches of the Perham area Lina Belar For the Focus St. Lawrence Church About 11 miles south of Perham, and a short distance east on County Road 14, is St. Lawrence Church of Rush Lake, the first Catholic Church in the area. It was built by a colony of Germans who left Mercer County, Ohio because of religious difficulties.

The first arrivals included Joseph Boedigheimer, Joseph A. Doll and Casper Schoeneberger, who came to Rush Lake by way of the Crow Wing Trail. They settled in the area in 1866 with their priest, Joseph M. Albrecht, and were joined shortly after by 50 more settlers who left Ohio to escape a Jacob Doll was one of the first pioneers to arrive from Ohio and settle in Rush Lake, where they established St. Lawrence Church, the first Catholic church built in the area.

The community consisted of brothers and sisters of the Society of the Most Precious Blood and families who settled on homesteads in the area. The original religious community was supported in part by a farm on which the brothers and sisters worked.

The first church was made of logs, but it was the same size and in the same location as the present church. In the spring of 1879, fire destroyed the log church. The present church was built the following year. Bells, which had been brought from Baden, Germany, were saved from the old church.

After Fr. Albrecht died in 1884, the church at Rush Lake, which had been dedicated to “Our Mother of Miracles” and called St. Mary’s at the time, was without a priest. The Benedictines received title to 700 acres of land, including the church site. In 1885, Father Lawrence Steinkoeer organized the parish and the name was changed to St. Lawrence, after the priest’s patron Saint. The Benedictines retained control until 1896, when Abbot Bernard turned the parish over to Bishop Zardetti of St. Cloud. In 1952, the Precious Blood Fathers were again given control.

Today, St. Lawrence is part of the St. Cloud Diocese. The last Precious Blood Father was Father Meyer, who left in 1985.

The church continues to have a strong and active community of members. The interior has been remodeled but still retains the woodcarvings of the altar that had been brought from Germany in the 1880s, as well as a number of statues.

To accommodate the increased population in summer, mass is held outdoors, on a carpet of grass, surrounded by pine trees and the sounds and smells of nature. In early summer, the songs of frogs rise from the nearby swamp, and sometimes a curious chipmunk or squirrel attends the service. Later in summer, chamomile growing wild in the parking

lot releases its sweet smell. The first Sunday in August, the church hosts a Polka Fest, to which everyone is invited to join in a rollicking good time.

The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, built in 1887, still stands today as the History Museum of East Otter Tail County. Prior to that, it served as the Perham library from 1929 until 1997.

Episcopal Church of the Redeemer The History Museum of East Otter Tail County, located on First Avenue (County Highway 8) in Perham, just north of the railroad tracks, began its public life about 126 years ago. Around New Year’s Day of 1888, the first celebration of divine services was held by Rev. E.S. Polke in what was then called the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer.

The church, as such, lasted less than 10 years. A split in the congregation caused people to go across town to the Methodist (Episcopal) Church (now the United Methodist), or just drift away.

By the 1920s, the American Legion Burelbach Post No. 61 had taken over the building and suggested that it could also be used as a library. Perham’s library remained in the building until near the end of the 20th century, when the new library was opened.

In 1998, the building became home to the History Museum of East Otter Tail County. A capital grant from the Minnesota Historical Society helped to restore the building, and a few years later the cupola, visible in early photographs, was restored.

ing was done by Nathaniel McConachie, a master stonemason who came from Scotland. He built a number of stone churches in Minnesota and North Dakota. All the churches were inspired by medieval gothic architecture, with a belfry tower, steeply pitched roof, wooden doors with iron strap hinges, deeply recessed openings and roughly hewn and irregularly sized field stones.

A perfectly-matched addition was added to the north of the building in 1941. The south section still looks much like it did when it was first built in 1887, with the addition of gardens created and maintained by the local Lady Slipper Garden Club.

St. Stanislaus Catholic Church On the corner of 1st Avenue NE and 5th Street NE is the St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, which was built to serve the Polish population of Perham.

It was first organized in 1883, and

was the wealthiest Catholic church in Otter Tail County by the turn of the century. It was also the largest, in terms of membership, with over 750 members.

The first Polish church was a wood frame building erected in 1884 for $10,000. Services were conducted in Polish and Latin. A Polish Catholic School soon followed.

By the 1920s, the parish decided to build a more permanent structure and commissioned the renowned architect, Victor Cordella, to design it. The priest at the time, Father Kuzniak, set high standards for this building. According to correspondence and church documents, it appears the contractors may have found him a bit difficult to work with, but the resulting church, which opened in 1922, was well-built and unique in the area, with a bell tower completely clad in copper.

The building has not been used as a church since 2009, when the parish joined forces with St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Perham, thus ending a 125-year-old legacy of the Polish having their own house of worship.

In 2010, the History Museum of East Otter Tail County commissioned an evaluation of St. Stanislaus in order to determine its eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

The building is now under the auspices of the Perham Center for the Arts.

St. Henry’s Catholic Church St. Henry’s Roman Catholic Church of Perham was incorporated April 23,

1885. The present brick structure is located on 2nd Avenue SW, a block and a half to the south of Main Street. It was built in 1905, replacing an earlier wood church from 1875. A major addition matching the existing building was added on in 2012.

Next to the church is the present St. Henry’s Area School, which was built in 1916. The first Catholic school in town opened in 1883 in a wood frame building. There were 60 pupils, both Catholic and Protestant. Two Benedictine nuns made up the first faculty. Only German was spoken in school, thus the students had to memorize their Baltimore Catechism in German.

St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Another Catholic church deserves mention, although it is no longer standing. In 1867, a year after the arrival of the settlers at Rush Lake, a group arrived from Stearns County, Minn., to settle at what became St. Joseph, near Marion Lake. They were followed the next year by a number of homesteaders, including Michael Schmitz, Florian Fehr, Martin Fiedler, George Seifert, George Reider, Joe Zimmerman and Balthazar Fuchs.

The parish of St. Joseph was founded in 1869 by Father Francis Pierz. The first church was built of logs in 1871 and had a dirt floor. It was replaced in 1882 when Father Joseph F. Buh was pastor.

In 1898, the church was enlarged and refurbished. Father John Wildenberg served the parish from 1925 until 1965 and continued living in the parish in retirement until his death in 1966. The church was destroyed by fire in 1965.
