HEALTHY LIFESTYLES 2013 6

Reflecting on a challenging, and rewarding, experience — BY MARIE NITKE —

what I was eating. And I did, for the most part. I kept decent track of my diet, and made an honest effort to cut down on carbs and processed foods, while amping up my intake of whole fruits and vegetables. Another part of my regimen was working out. I started by going to the Perham Area Community Center twice a week to meet with my trainer, Marie Hanson. She showed me how to use the machines – not just how to work them, mechanically, but how to use them in a way and order that would be most effective for me. Later, she taught me how to use weights. Cardio came even later, after I had some muscle buildup and my body was stronger. At no point was she screaming insults in my face, trying to motivate me through intimidation like I’d seen on TV. Instead, Marie was enthusiastic and kind, and supportive. If I broke down and ate fast food one day, she wouldn’t scold me. Instead, she’d encourage me to get back to business and just keep on moving forward. If I was having a lazy day, she’d work out alongside me so I couldn’t feel too sorry for myself. Knowing she would be there at the gym, waiting for me, made me actually go. Even when we didn’t have an appointment, I knew I needed to get there at least a couple more times a week on my own, because she would ask me about it the next time I saw her. That six-week stint started back in December. It was not glamorous. I repeatedly watched myself get red-faced and sweaty in a pitiless floor-to-ceiling mirror. My muscles were sore, and my limbs and back ached. At times, my lungs got tired and raspy from breathing so heavily, and my shaky, exhausted body felt so weak that I could hardly make it down the stairs of the PACC to get out to my car.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES 2013

Getting healthy is hard. That’s one thing I learned in my six-week stint with a personal trainer. You have to become a tireless watchdog for yourself, accepting no excuses and cutting no corners. You have to make fundamental changes to your behavior and lifestyle. Things that have become habit over the years – such as ordering a pizza when you don’t feel like cooking – become major ‘no-nos,’ and the challenge is to form new, healthier habits. That ‘quick slice’ becomes a ‘quick salad.’ Doesn’t have quite the same ring to it, does it? But it’s also not as extreme as I had imagined. After watching a few episodes of The Biggest Loser, I was convinced that working with a personal trainer was going to be a living hell. I imagined the trainer angrily barking commands and so-called ‘encouragements’ in my face, and me bursting into tears and shouting “I just can’t do it anymore!!” But it really wasn’t that dramatic. Yes, it was hard. But it was also a learning experience. I learned how to pay more attention to my diet and activity level. I learned more about my body’s nutritional and exercise needs, and I learned more about my personal limits. In truth, I learned more about myself. It was also a good experience. After the first few weeks, I started to adjust to my new routine, and my body thanked me for it. I had more energy, and felt stronger and healthier than I had in years. Part of my regimen consisted of writing down everything I ate and drank in a day. Every day. Every little thing. ‘Anything that goes in, must get written down,’ was the rule. I admit, I didn’t entirely succeed at this. I wrote everything down for the first two or three weeks, and then just started taking mental notes. Fortunately, my trainer trusted me to tell the truth about

7

It was not convenient. I was often running five to 10 minutes late for appointments because I was trying to squeeze workouts in between interviews and other obligations at work and at home. I sometimes rushed to work functions still wearing gym pants and sneakers, apologizing profusely for my appearance. I often put off other things, such as housework, recreational time and time spent with my husband, to work out. I also spent a lot more time planning and preparing my meals. It was not cheap. Hiring a personal trainer takes money. The price is not outrageous, or even unreasonable, but it’s not insignificant, either. On top of that, the cost of healthy groceries is surprisingly high, compared to boxed dinners and other processed, quick-fix foods. My grocery expenses more than doubled after I transitioned to my new diet. And, as I’ve already stated, it was not easy. So what was it? In a word: rewarding. It was all worth it. It was also surprisingly fun. I confess that today, a few months after finishing my sessions with Marie, I’m no longer working out as often as I had been, and I’ve reintroduced some old

‘bad’ foods into my diet. But – and this is an important but – I learned things. I learned better habits, and how to eat healthier. Even though I haven’t stuck to a regimen as strict as Marie had laid out for me, I have incorporated many of the things I learned from her into my daily life, and those healthier habits will now always be with me. By working with Marie, I learned: -That the number on the scale doesn’t really mean much. In my six weeks, I lost five pounds. At the start, I was hoping to lose more like 20. But, I wasn’t disappointed. I lost a significant amount of body fat, and gained a lot of muscle. I became more toned – I saw it in the mirror and felt it in the way my clothes fit. I also felt stronger and more able-bodied. -That a lot of things I used to buy at the grocery store are not really that good for me, even things I thought would be okay. Those granola bars, for example? Not so much; too much sugar. And offthe-shelf soup? Too much salt. Even peanut butter isn’t that good for you, unless you buy the all-natural kind. -How to effectively use exercise machines and weights. I used to just sit down at a machine and start pulling or pushing away, pretty clueless about what I was doing. Now, I know how much

weight to set each machine at, the order in which to most effectively use the machines, and how many repetitions to do to make it all worth my while. -That it’s okay to give in to temptation once in a while, or to have a lazy day – as long as you get back into your healthy routine the next day, or next meal. You have to forgive yourself for small transgressions, or you’ll never last through the long-haul. -That getting healthy is hard. I’ve said that already, I know. What I haven’t said is it was hard because I let myself get unhealthy. Unhealthy enough that I knew it was time to make a change. What I learned, maybe above all else, through my personal training experience, is that getting healthy is hard, but once you’re healthy, it’s not that hard to stay that way. Maintaining a decent diet and basic exercise routine will go a long way – for anyone. It’s worth setting aside a little time each day to focus on yourself, and to take care of your body’s needs. Your energy level goes up and your self-confidence grows, and with that, your relationships improve, your work improves, your overall attitude toward life improves. You feel better, both physically and emotionally, and that impacts everything else in your life, in a really good way.

Community health assessment spurs new activities to get people moving

What does it mean to live a “healthy” lifestyle? Is it eating strictly 2,000 calories and drinking eight glasses of water a day? Where does exercise rank in importance? How about getting 6 to 8 hours of sleep each night? Ultimately, each person’s perception of what is a “healthy” lifestyle will be unique. In a community health setting, narrowing down the idea of what is healthy is broader and more generalized, but still has the potential to shape the health of individuals. The community is considered as a whole, looking for issues that affect a significant portion of its people. “Addressing healthy living and chronic disease prevention at the community level is designed to bring the greatest health benefits to the greatest number of people in need,” according to the Centers for Disease Control’s Division of Community Health. “A community approach to healthy living can have farther-reaching effects than the efforts of individuals working on their own to make healthy changes.” As part of the Affordable Care Act, hospitals that are non-profit and tax-exempt are required to conduct community health needs assessments every three

years, then create a strategy to meet the identified needs and make the assessment information available to the public. Perham Health completed its community assessment in 2012 and 2013. “This information… illustrates what we know about physical, social and behavioral factors for health in the community, along with health outcomes related to those factors,” said the report. “The assessment process further invokes discussion and goal-setting to address what we can do as we join forces, to create healthier places to live, learn, work and play.” Sue Sailer, Director of Social Services at Perham Health and a member of the hospital’s strategic team, acknowledged the many changes and challenges in maintaining personal and community health today. “(In) our whole nation, lifestyles have changed,” she said. “The amount of exercise the majority of people get is different than in decades past. The choices of food is different. So, it’s uplifting the need for people to take proactive choices in healthy lifestyles.” According to the report, 75 cents of each dollar spent on health care in the U.S. is related to chronic diseases (heart disease, asthma, cancer and diabetes).

Are you finally serious about weight loss? Do you really want to succeed? You need a coach, a teacher, a confidant.

-Sue Sailor early detection, improved diet, exercise and treatment,” said the report. Of course, making those healthy changes a reality is easier said than done. “Nobody wants to be told what to do,” said Sailer of the tricky task. “Nobody wants to be feeling like Big Brother’s

leaning over your shoulder telling you what to do. The message has to be given… ‘This is your life. If you make these choices that are going to help you… you’ll be better off in the long run.’” “The city, school, county, civic leaders, clergy and health care providers are all working together to gradually promote environments and behavioral inclinations to make healthy choices in lifestyles,” she added. While making the change itself can be daunting, the assessment’s survey indicated that respondents were aware of the issues. Physical health, particularly obesity, poor nutrition and eating habits, and inactivity or lack of exercise were points of concern for those who took the survey. In focus groups, participants cited obesity, diabetes, exercise opportunities for disease prevention and sustaining care for an aging population as their greatest concerns for the community’s collective health. Through this information, along with data from county health rankings, the assessment group decided to focus on three issues through 2016: obesity, mental health and access to specialized healthcare services (possibly including local dialysis, chemotherapy and specialist visits). The first wide-reaching tangible result from the assessment came on June 7 in the form of the Mature Mile and Family 5K, hosted on behalf of Perham Living. “The event is geared to be inclusive for all ages – one to 100 – and to encourage health and wellness at all stages and ages in life,” said organizers.

In all, about 220 people took part in the two events. All age groups were represented – from toddlers being pushed in strollers to senior citizens with their walkers or wheelchairs. “Nobody has to be a great athlete,” said Sailer. “Everybody can move. It’s a simple concept.” Two families who embraced the concept of getting active and participated in the events were the Andersons and the Huebsches. Jim and Margaret Huebsch: The oldest couple at the Mature Mile “I never thought I’d be in it,” Margaret Huebsch said of the Mature Mile. “I thought I could just watch.” Jim, Margaret’s husband, and Duane, one of their sons, had already registered as a pair for the event. “I got Dad signed up,” said Duane. “But, I couldn’t take Mom and Dad at the same time.” The morning of the walk, Duane got a call from Joe, one of his brothers, who was up from St. Cloud, Minn. “He left Wadena and came here about 10:30, I think it was, and told Mom she was in this race,” Duane explained. “He registered Mom real quick, about 15 minutes before the race started.” “He just came and said, ‘Mom, I’m taking you with your walker.’ That’s the first I knew about it,” Margaret said. “At first, you said it was a race! There was no way I wanted to be in a race.” Once they established the event wasn’t focused on speed,

Kaia and Soren Anderson ran in the Family 5K on June 7 with their uncle, Vaun Bruhn. All three have been participating in local runs, along with other family members, for several years.

the family made their way around the course. “Jim is 94 and I’m 92,” Margaret said. They will have been married for 67 years in September. “I think we were probably the oldest couple there.” “It was just nice to get out,” said Duane. “We walked by our former place that we lived in,” Margaret said. The home, which stands a block away from the hospital, was built in 1952, with hay fields for neighbors. As they progressed, Jim would talk about the previous owners of other homes. “I walked part of the way,” Margaret said. “When I got tired, Joe told me to sit down (on her wheeled walker) and he pushed me.” She estimated that she walked about half of the distance, and then over the finish line at the end. “If it works out, I think we’ll do it again,” said Duane. “I think it was very well organized.” While she doesn’t usually participate in organized exercise activities, Margaret stays active by walking from her apartment to the nursing home to see Jim – usually once a day, sometimes twice. “I get my walking in that way,” she said of the circuit, which is indoors. “I know walking is good for a person.”

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES 2014

5K a family affair It didn’t take much to convince young siblings Soren and Kaia Anderson to participate in the Family 5K that was also held June 7. “I wanted to run,” said Soren. “It’s good exercise for you and I get to run with my friends, so I don’t get bored.” He and several friends competed in the race after having a sleep-over the night before. Soren finished the course in 26 minutes and 55 seconds and took eighth place in his division – it was a personal record. Gunnar, the oldest of the three Anderson children, took second place in the men’s 5K division with a time of 23 min-

utes and 52 seconds. “Vaun (Bruhn, her uncle) did it,” said 6-year-old Kaia Anderson of why she decided to participate in the event. She has also run with her uncle in a few other local races, such as the Saps Running 5K in Vergas. The pair crossed the finish line together with a time of 37 minutes and 31 seconds. Kaia got 31st in her division and Vaun took 26th. “It won’t be long before these guys will be beating their uncle,” said Vaun with a chuckle. “It’s fun.” Running has become somewhat of a family affair for these relatives. Vaun got both of the children started on running, and also runs with Erin Anderson, their dad. “Erin and I started running for a diabetes fundraiser several years ago,” said Vaun. “It was ‘Run Around the Rose.’ We ran that race with a niece from Willmar (Minn.), Tara Rudie. She was going to be a seventh grader that year, and we like to think that we inspired her a little bit, to go out for crosscountry, which she did.” Vaun said the plan right now is for Tara to run with him and Erin in the Twin Cities Marathon this fall. Kayla Rudie, Tara’s younger sister, also runs cross-country now and does “quite well,” said Vaun. “I think we’ve rubbed off on them a bit,” he said. “They seem to enjoy it and stay active. We’ve had a lot of fun running these races together.” Although they enjoy running, Soren and Kaia could think of other fun ways to get exercise that might not feel like as much work. “Basketball or jumping on a trampoline,” said Soren. Kaia added gymnastics, dance, swimming and tee-ball to the list. “Get out and run or bike, or play ball,” said Vaun. “Stay active. You just have to make time for it and make it a priority. It seems like there’s always ‘something else’ you could be doing.”

Know where your food is coming from – buy from local producers. Farmers markets are one great place to find locally-grown, healthy foods. Many producers take part in the Minnesota Grown program, which creates a statewide directory of farmers markets, berry farms, garden centers, CSA farms and more. Fresh, locallygrown Early Goliath tomatoes, labeled “Minnesota Grown,” were for sale at the Perham Farmers Market in early July.

more than 840 members who offer their Minnesota Grown products for sale directly to consumers. It is distributed statewide through travel information centers, libraries, chambers of commerce, Explore Minnesota Tourism, member producers’ farms, and at special events like the Minnesota State Fair and Living Green Expo. It is also available on the MinnesotaGrown.com website. In addition to growers at the farmers market in Perham, there are a number of producers within a short distance who carry the Minnesota Grown label. The following are listed in the Minnesota Grown Directory: -Buehler’s Produce has served the Ottertail area for more than 20 years. Their season begins May 1 with bedding plants, flowers and hanging baskets, followed in June by strawberries. July brings potatoes, onions, beans, cucumbers and sweet corn. Next are melons, squash and pumpkins in the fall. You can visit their red barn, located on Highway 108 just east of the city of Ottertail, between May 1 and Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. -In New York Mills, a farmers market is located on Centennial Drive next to the old creamery building. Fresh local tomatoes were already for sale at the farmers market in Perham at the time of this writing, July 9. The flawless red fruits, variety name Early Goliath, bore the label, “Minnesota Grown.” The grower, Diane Matson, said she started the tomato plants in her greenhouse on March 6. “I put them outside in 5-gallon pails by the tenth of May,” she said, adding that she kept the plants protected until all danger of frost had passed. Matson farms 7 acres of produce near Butler. She’s been growing produce all her life. Her parents, Woody and Harriet Arola, were farmers. Matson studied horticulture in college and then came back home to continue farming. She’s been bringing produce to farmers markets for years. For the past five years, the farmers market in Perham has been located at Northern Pacific Park on Main Street, where it is open during the summer season on Wednesdays and Fridays. It is just one of the hundreds of markets throughout the state that offer locally grown produce, all proudly bearing a sticker that says, “Minnesota Grown.” Minnesota Grown is a program begun more than 20 years ago to promote locally grown products. It is a statewide partnership between the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and Minnesota producers of specialty crops and livestock. With the Minnesota Grown logo, customers can easily recognize what is grown locally. There are more than 1,000 diverse members of the Minnesota Grown program, including farmers markets, garden centers, wineries, fruit and vegetable growers, pickyour-own farms, livestock producers, meat processors, Christmas tree growers, and producers of honey, wild rice, maple syrup, cheese and other gourmet products. To use the Minnesota Grown logo, people who grow, raise or process Minnesota products must receive an annual license from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. Over 2 million price cards, stickers and other point-ofsale materials with the Minnesota Grown logo are used by producers and retailers every year. This year’s annual Minnesota Grown Directory includes

fair price. Honey is sold from a small shed outside of Dan’s home, on Highway 78 just north of Ottertail, as well as at the Detroit Lakes Farmers Market and a variety of area stores. -Minnesota Grown is not always just about things to eat. Cupkie’s Christmas Tree Village is a member. Located south of Perham on Highway 14 just off of Highway 78, this farm offers Christmas trees to cut yourself or purchase retail or wholesale for landscaping. Cupkie’s also offers wreaths, garland, pumpkins, spruce tops and a year-round gift shop, plus lots of fun family activities during the Christmas season. The tree farm is open daily in November and December, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays (and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays) January to October. These places and more are listed in the 2014-2015 Minnesota Grown Directory. A comprehensive guide for the entire state, it includes a list of farmers markets, berry farms, garden centers, orchards, CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farms, Christmas tree farms and more. The directory is filled with many family-friendly activity suggestions. It’s summer and farmers markets across the state are open and ready for business. Look for the Minnesota Grown label and get fresh, great tasting local fruits, vegetables, homemade products and more straight from the producer.

A brief history of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture The Minnesota Department of Agriculture dates back to 1885, when the Minnesota State Dairy Commission, a forerunner for the Department of Agriculture, was created for the limited purpose of prohibiting the sale of adulterated milk and the sale of oleomargarine. The commission was started with one department head, one assistant and one clerk who doubled as a chemist. The commission budget was $6,000. The first law in Minnesota regulating food and drink was one regulating the sale of oleomargarine. In March of 1885, the Grain Inspection Law was passed, establishing inspection, weighing and registration divisions and providing for licensing of terminal warehouses. Through the next century, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture established policies and programs designed to benefit Minnesota farmers. In 1979, the commissioner was required to establish a Minnesota food products logo and to promulgate rules governing its use.

During workouts, class participants imitate Hanson’s many different movements, such as walking and kicking. This gets the blood pumping and the calories burning, and improves cardiovascular health – all within the comfortable weightlessness of the water. Surprisingly, the ability to swim is not necessary for water fitness classes. Participants may

If you’re looking for a comfortable, low-stress workout that will leave you feeling refreshed, energized and strong, consider dipping into water fitness. The Water Fitness Program at the Perham Area Community Center offers a social environment for an exercise regimen that is less strenuous on the body than many land exercises, while still beneficial to overall health. “The water provides more resistance and less stress on joints because of the buoyancy of the water,” said Marie Hanson, the water fitness program’s instructor. “The program provides a full

choose to simply walk in shallow water, which helps improve flexibility and support balance. Also, unlike common land exercises such as cardio or weightlifting, all the muscles are used in water fitness. The resistance provided by water burns more calories than any exercises on land, and reduces the risk of injury. While participants burn calories from the workout, the temperature of the water keeps them cool, which prevents the body from heating up and sweating. Those with medical conditions such as arthritis, high cholesterol and high blood pressure find the classes especially beneficial, due to the buoyancy of the water.

This supportive exercise program has been improving the health of those who have been attending for quite some time. A few of the regular participants – Dorothy Merchant, Sharon Neuerberg and Beverly Ellis – all said during a recent class that the workouts have been very helpful. They also agreed that the most favorable part is the fun of it all. Ellis added, “It gets you moving in the morning... a lot!” Water fitness classes take place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. There is a fee to attend. Get in the swing of it

Golfing can lead to better health — BY ROBERT WILLIAMS —

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES 2013 22

Golf provides opportunities for not only physical exercise, but also mental, due to the need for concentration and analytical thinking.

An average-sized man walking and carrying clubs for 18 holes will burn 1,442 calories total, according to an analysis by GolfLink.com. Pulling clubs with a push or pull cart will also help increase calories burnt. Hopping in a golf cart and cruising around the course can cut those numbers nearly in half. Golf also has a feel-good nature about it, providing ample time to spend with friends and enjoy nature, while also kicking in a release of endorphins – all great stress reducers and natural mood enhancers. Getting away from everyday stresses, civilization in general, and ringing cell phones are all part of being out on the course. The low impact nature of the game is also great for elderly players. Combined with a healthy diet, golf has more healing abilities, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol and cutting the risk of stroke and diabetes. It can also help

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES 2013

The game of golf has a number of health benefits and makes for a fun, low-impact form of exercise on a nice summer day. For the most impact on one’s health, golfers need to ditch the golf cart to get the most benefit by walking. Perham Lakeside Golf Club offers a unique space for such exercise: more than five miles of golf course over three nine-hole scenes, 27 total holes, and nearly 10,000 yards of golf. The Maple, Oak, and Pine courses boast beautiful fairways, scenic natural wetlands, and flowing elevation changes, ending in spectacular approaches to wellmanicured greens. The vistas surrounding the greens on the Pine course are an understated and often overlooked benefit of golfing in Perham. For those willing to carry their clubs, the added weight or resistance will give the round an extra calorieburning boost.

prevent hypertension and osteoporosis. The act of golfing works to help tone muscles by adding the swinging of clubs and pulling of hand carts adding to the cardiovascular benefits of hours of walking. An average round of golf takes between three and four hours to play. A round of golf can be as good as a run for cutting the risk of heart disease, according to research from the U.S. National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Golf also requires concentration and analytical thinking, with all the necessary mechanics in line to put the ball in the hole making the game a way for participants to get physical exercise, but also mental exercise. Regular walking can also help ward off dementia, according to a study from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. The study also noted regular playing of golf can add up to five years to one’s life, and the death rate for golfers is 40 percent lower than for other people of the same sex, age and socioeconomic status. One round of golf can take care of the 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise recommended for heart health AMHI by theMission Department of Health. BCOW Statement

Golf’s popularity is conducive to the lifestyles of all kinds of people. It can be played by people of all abilities and ages; solo or in groups, and can be simply a casual pastime or a competitive activity. The overall risk of injury is low. However, injuries still can and do occur. Common injuries are to the lower back, wrist and elbow, head and eye. Causes of injury include overuse, incorrect technique, hitting the ground instead of the ball, aggravation of a previous injury and falling. The game of golf can be intimidating for novices and beginners, but a quick lesson or two on the fundamentals makes the game more fun and far less daunting. Perham Lakeside Golf Club PGA Professional Nick Anderson can help. Whether you are perfecting your swing on the driving range or mastering the difficult shots on the course, Anderson offers individual or group instruction geared to any particular golfing style, experience and personal goals. Summer’s the time to get kids vaccinated New immunization requirements take effect Sept. 1 — BY MARIE NITKE —

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES 2013 28

tion. Kids who are not immunized are at a higher risk of contracting serious and sometimes life-threatening illnesses. “No vaccine is 100 percent safe,” he said, “but the side effects that are common are very mild, and the risks of not being vaccinated far outweigh that.” Measles outbreaks, for example, have doubled compared to 10 years ago, simply because fewer kids are getting immunized. Measles is a childhood infection caused by a virus, and it can be serious and even fatal for small children. What people tend to forget about today, Chapman said, is how fortunate we are to have these vaccines available to us. In 1900, half of all children died from illnesses that are now preventable through vaccination. Some parents object to immunization on religious or philosophical grounds, but others don’t vaccinate their children because they believe that the benefits don’t justify the risks – a belief that is not supported by scientific or clinical evidence. As a July 8 Op-Ed in the Los Angeles Times expressed, “immunization programs have been a victim of their own success. Because of vaccinations, Americans today have little experience with vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles. As a result, they cannot easily appreciate the benefits of vaccination or the risks associated with not vaccinating.” In addition to vaccinations, Chapman said it’s important to bring kids in for regular, yearly check-ups; complete, head-to-toe examinations that will help determine a child’s overall health and wellness. Perham Health patients can access their health records, and the records of their children (including immunization records), online through a tool called MyChart. Visit www. pmhh.com and follow the “MyChart” link to sign up or access the online records. For more information about immunizations, visit www. health.state.mn.us or www.cdc.gov.

New immunization requirements will be going into effect on Sept. 1, and parents may want to take note so they can get their kids vaccinated before the start of school. The new requirements apply mainly to students entering seventh grade and young children enrolling in child care or early childhood programs. The vaccines are ‘required’ under the Minnesota Immunization Law, but medical and conscientious exemptions are still allowed under the law. Parents need to submit documentation of vaccination to their children’s’ schools, or will need to submit proof of a legal exemption. New requirements include: -Meningitis: All students entering seventh grade will need to be vaccinated. Schools may request proof of vaccination from students in eighth through 12th grades. -Hepatitis B: For all children more than 2 months old who are enrolled or enrolling in child care or an early childhood program. -Hepatitis A: For all children over 12 months old who are enrolled or enrolling in child care or an early childhood program. -Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis): For all students entering seventh grade. This replaces the former Td (Tetanus, Diphtheria) immunization requirement, adding the additional Pertussis protection. Tdap is the booster immunization to DTaP, which is administered to children when they are younger. -Kindergarten students must have their final dose of DTaP and polio on or after their fourth birthdays. Dr. Joshua Chapman, a Perham Health physician specializing in internal medicine and pediatrics, said parents are always free to choose whether or not to have their kids vaccinated, and he encourages people to educate themselves on the risks and benefits of immunization. “I never turn patients away for care if they decide not to get their kids vaccinated,” he said. “And I don’t try to make them feel guilty if they decide not to do it.” That said, Chapman strongly encourages immuniza-

A step in the safe direction

Protect your feet from the sun’s rays

— ERIC HENDRICKX —

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES 2013 30

Summer in Lakes Country – the time when we’re finally able to pack away the scarves and long johns and get out the flip-flops and tank tops. With weather so warm and the outdoors so appealing, it seems almost a crime to mention anything negative about being outside. One would like to think that long lines at the local Dairy Queen and swarms of pesky mosquitos would be the only problematic things about spending time out at the lakes; unfortunately, that’s not the case. With half of our year consisting of cold weather and short days, we tend to forget that our skin is not accustomed to the barrage of sunlight that comes with a Minnesota summer. Skin cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer in the United States, with “melanoma being the most serious and aggressive form,” according to Dr. Marc Butcher of Ottertail Podiatry in Fergus Falls. Fortunately, there are numerous ways to protect yourself. On days when you know you’ll be outside and under consistent rays from the sun, make sure to practice the proper strategies to keep your skin safe. Packing sunscreen is the first approach; waterproof sunscreen is best. Sunscreen needs to be applied every two hours – unless you find yourself continually in and out of water or sweating consistently, then it must be applied more frequently. Although most skin cancers occur on the parts of our bodies that see the most sun (face, neck, ears, hands and arms), the most serious melanoma cases sometimes arise on other, often forgotten areas, such as the foot. Feet stay tucked away under socks and shoes in the winter, but in the summer, they’re often in sandals, getting constant sun exposure. And many people don’t think about applying sunscreen to their feet. “People just forget about protecting their feet,” Butcher explained. “Sandals simply do not provide enough protection; sunscreen needs to be applied to the feet as it does any other part of a person’s body” Unprotected from the sun’s rays, the skin on your feet is vulnerable to melanoma. Melanoma on the foot is a serious issue: the five year survival rate for skin cancer on the foot is much lower than skin cancers found elsewhere on the body. Butcher expressed his concern, stating, “The main reason for this is a lack of early detection. People simply do not focus enough time or energy on making sure their feet are protected from the sun.” According to Butcher, “You should check your feet daily; get to know every freckle and every mole. If something is out of the norm, it needs to be checked out.” If you paint your toenails, you should completely remove the polish once a month in order to thoroughly check all areas of your feet, including under the nails. Talk to your doctor about any unusual findings. Knowing your “ABCDs” is a good trick to know if there is any issue with your skin, explained Butcher: “Asymmetry means one half of a mole is different from the other half. Border irregularity means the spot has non-smooth, but uneven borders. Color means the spot has several colors and the coloring is uneven. Diameter means the spot is larger than the size of a pencil eraser.” The good news is, melanomas can often be safely removed with minor surgery. This, of course, is with the aid of early detection. Take this simple advice to ensure your skin stays healthy for years to come.

We can help you plan for the end of a healthy life. Living Will (Health Care Directive) Allows you to direct the nature of your health care should you become unable to communicate your wishes due to illness or injury. Also allows you to give certain instructions regarding funeral arrangements and burial. Power of Attorney Enables a trusted individual(s) to manage your financial affairs in the event of incompetence or incapacity. Last Will & Testament/Trust Legal documents that allow you to express your preferences about how your estate should be handled after your death and, in the case of living trusts, during your lifetime as well. Pay On Death Titling Documents that allow transfer of property on death without a probate proceeding.

Call our office for an appointment and let one of our experienced attorneys assist you.
