n Planting plain-looking bulbs in the fall will ensure your garden beds yield lots of colorful flowers, like these bright yellow daffodils, in the spring.

Planting fall bulbs yields colorful flowers in the spring P

lanting bulbs in the fall begins the great waiting game for gardeners who wonder if the plants will survive the winter or if the look of the garden will be what they imagined. Mary Dertinger, one local gardening expert, offers a few tips to ensure the success of fall planting. “Plant now to the end of the month such bulbs as daffadils, Siberian squill and allium,” the manager of Jean’s the Right Plant Place, suggested, “tulips probably could be planted a little later.” Planting now, she said, allows plants more time to plant their roots. Daffodils, the bright yellow flowers of spring grow to a height of about eight inches, and the squill is one of the first spring bloomers. The allium comes in various heights - some get quite tall, Dertinger said 6

n To plant properly, place the bulb into the ground, point up, three to four times the height of the bulb deep.

– so if the plant is of the tall variety, consider planting it at the back of the garden, behind plants that are shorter. Tulips now come in various bloom times, so if one wants the perennial to blossom from May to early June, Dertinger suggests planting several varieties in one hole for the extended blooms. Of course, the spring weather will dictate how well or long the tulips will bloom, she said. Planting bulbs isn’t difficult, she said. Just remember to plant most bulbs three to four times the height of the bulb. For example most tulip bulbs are about two inches high, so plant them about six inches down. Dertinger offered this step-by-step process for planting most bulbs: -Dig a hole about six to eight inches deep, spacing each hole about four to six inches apart. - Add a couple inches of compost to the hole - Add about 10 bulbs per hole - Add bulb food to remaining amended soil and fill in the hole 8

FALL HOME MAGAZINE 2015

“About the only wrong thing you can do is plant the bulb upside down,” Dertinger said. “The point should be planted up.” Proper fall watering is also important. Water as you would any new planting, being particularly mindful of dry spells common in the fall. Windy days in the fall are frequent and help remove the foliage from trees in preparation of winter, but also tend to dry out soil more quickly. To prevent overwatering, dig down a couple inches along the plantings to determine if water is required. Dertinger also suggested gardeners may want to mark where and what was planted in the fall because in the spring memory may fail you. Also, she cautioned against cutting back the leaves of the spring plants as the leaves are what feeds the bulb for the coming spring’s bloom. Let it die back naturally, she said. Melinda Myers, a gardening expert, TV/radio host and author, suggests planning spring flowering bulbs after the nighttime temperatures hover

consistently around 40 to 50 degrees. Waiting until the soil cools reduces the risk of early sprouting that can occur during a warm fall, she said. Those tired of battling the animals may want to plant resistant bulbs such as daffodils, hyacinths, Fritillaria, alliums, Camassia, glory-of-the snow, snow drops, squills, and grape hyacinths, Myers said. You may find it is easier to avoid the problem than battle the animals with repellents and scare tactics. In addition to planting bulbs, fall is a good time to put in other perennials, trees and shrubs, according to Myers. “The soil is warm and the air cooler, so the plants are less stressed and establish more quickly,” she said, adding “Select plants suited to the growing conditions and be sure to give them plenty of room to reach their mature size.” Getting some garden plants started now will ensure a colorful spring next year.

ith an aim for a rustic modern style in her lake home on Big Pine Lake, one lake home owner incorporated reclaimed wood, an all-natural color scheme, with a lot of cherry wood and some brick. “I love the look of the reclaimed wood,” she said. “It’s very warm and inviting. And there is a story behind each one.” 10

The couple moved into the house in May 2014, but the process of building the home started in 2013, as the couple went over floor plans with their architect, Kelli Wegscheid of Harmonious Architecture. The home, built on a 1.25-acre lot, features an open floor plan and a view of the woods and lake from nearly every vantage point in the house which was important to the couple. “When you walk in the door, we wanted people to see the lake,” she said.

On the main floor of the 2,503-square foot home is the kitchen, dining area, a great room, den and master bedroom suite, a pantry and the laundry room. Perhaps one of the favorite rooms of the house is the 14-by-14-foot threeseasonal screened porch. The windows incorporate EZ Breeze windows – window panels that accordion up and down over the screens to allow light in and keep rain out. And built at an angle, the porch’s view the lake isn’t blocked by support structure, she said.

“(The house) was built for light, air movement and the view,” the homeowner said. Indeed, the windows are large and uncovered throughout the home, with an eye to allowing the natural outdoors into the house. Transom windows located high on the inside walls of the upper bedrooms allow light and air to circulate, making it virtually unnecessary to run the home’s air conditioning, she said, though it was turned on twice this year for the comfort of her guests. The kitchen, with its central island, is situated to allow the homeowner to be a part of her guests’ conversations. The cooktop, installed in the island, allows people to stand around while she is cooking. On the west wall is a desk area designed to accommodate technology, keeping the devices charged and organized, she said. A large window over a desk looks out on the front yard. The walk-in pantry keeps her small appliances and cooking staples close at hand. “Everyone has iPads, Kindles, phones and whatnot, and they can plug their devices in and they are in one spot,” she said. “My husband sits (at the desk) all the time and does his work there.” The upstairs of the home has a loft feel, allowing guests to overlook the great room on the lower floor. The two bedrooms each have an outside view, as well: one of the

lake – the sunrise room on the east – while the other has a garden view, and is what the homeowner calls the sunset room because it faces west, she said. “I’m a gardener so our guests can look over the garden in that room,” she said. The upstairs railing and that on the patio outside is made of cable and cherry wood lending to openness and unobstructed views. The master suite is large and bright with a view of the lake, opening onto a stone patio. The bathroom in the suite has a walk-in rain shower and a window with a view outside located in the shower. Because the home is surrounded by mature-growth trees privacy is not a concern, even in the shower, the homeowner said. Another unique feature of the master bath is the Rain Forest Granite counter which resembles birch trees, carrying the outdoor theme into the bath. The homeowner consulted with her daughter who does interior design for the finishing touches, she said, locating side lamps that look like an upright tree branch, and a friend provided the evergreen tree candle holders. The dining table, coffee table and side tables were created with reclaimed pine barn wood from Valley City, N.D., by Grain Designs. In fact, all the wood touches in the home are reclaimed wood, with a story, the homeowner said. The door to the laundry room uses a reclaimed sliding

Lawn care

a year round pursuit starting in the fall n Lawns need attention in the fall to ensure they have a productive spring.

M

ost of us can’t wait for the first blade of grass to peak through the patches of melting snow in the spring. To best ensure dormant grasses transform into luscious lawns, however, is a year round endeavor.

Many homeowners think lawns need less care in the fall because the grass grows more slowly. In fact, just the opposite is true. During this time of year, grass is busily feeding - absorbing energy, moisture, and nutrients - in preparation for a long, quiet winter. Give it a little attention now, and you’ll be rewarded with a thick, healthy spring lawn. 16

FALL HOME MAGAZINE 2015

There are several ways to prepare a lawn for winter, says local lawn expert Pat Morstad from Precision Landscape and Irrigation. “Its best is to do a complete lawn program where fall is just simply part of a bigger, year-round program of regular fertilization and getting rid of broadleaf weeds,” noted the local lawn man, According the most recent University of Minnesota Extension Office fertilizing guide, healthy lawns depend on many factors including adequate water for growth and evaporative cooling, sunlight and carbon dioxide for energy production, and oxygen for respiration. “Lawn growth depends on nutrients

or essential elements absorbed by roots from the soil,” said the guide, adding when natural soil processes do not provide adequate supplies of these elements, fertilizer should be applied to, “maintain optimum grass growth. In short, the purpose of fertilizing a lawn is to add the necessary nutrients in the required amounts and at the proper time to achieve the best turf plants. At least eighteen elements are required by plants for proper growth added the extension office. Fortunately, most of the elements are supplied to grass plants by natural soil processes. Three elements, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, are considered primary macronutrients, noted the ex-

tension office, because they are often required in larger quantities than are made available through natural soil processes. Soil tests are necessary, though, to establish which elements are needed for a specific lawn site. Soil tests can be obtained by submitting a soil sample to private soil testing facility or to the University of Minnesota Soil Testing Laboratory. Mid-to-late fall is a great time to fertilize. Simply use a crank-style broadcast spreader, but for optimum coverage, consider using a walk-behind drop spreader, noted a Popular Mechanics website tip on lawn maintenance. It may take a little longer, said the site, especially on hilly yards, but a drop spreader provides the best way to apply an even, consistent layer of fertilizer. Most lawn experts agree: If you fertilize your lawn only once a year, do it in the fall. Why you might ask? Because grass leaves grow much more slowly as the weather turns cool, but the grass roots and rhizomes grow quickly at this time. (Rhizomes are the horizontal plant stems that lie just beneath the soil’s surface; they produce the blades of grass above and the roots below.) Dormant fertilization at the end of fall is key, added Morstad. “You need the grass to go dormant to best survive the winter: Mother Nature knows best. So, do fertilize right before the snow flies. It sets up the turf for a nutrient rich in springtime.”

Fall also means taking care of weeds. Too often lawns can be too lush, creating a place for pathogens to grow in addition to the desired grasses, added Morstad. If broadleaf weeds, like dandelions, have taken over your lawn, now is the time to take care of them. Weeds, like most plants, are in energy-absorbing mode during the fall too. They’re taking in everything that comes their way, including weed killers. Apply an herbicide now and you’ll have a weed-free spring. Most herbicide manufacturers recommend applying the weed killer during early-to-mid autumn, when daytime temperatures are consistently above 60 degrees Fahrenheit. So, start preparing for a green spring now. Fall is a great time to prepare a lawn for hibernation or start a new one added Morstad and hydro-seeding is the way to go. A combination of wood mulch, fertilizer and seed, hydro-seeding blends all the key lawn growing components into one, big slurry that just needs to be sprayed onto a barren lawn space, encouraging good spring turf outcomes. “It becomes the best growing environment. You can hydroseed in the fall to start a new lawn or prepare an existing one for winter,” said Morstad. So not only is preparing ones fall lawn landscape easy, it is essential and the perfect time to ready turf for a great spring show.

BY ERIC HENDRICKX

n Many steps need to be taken in order to properly winterize a cabin for winter. The furnace, septic tank, plumbing and lawn all need to be addressed in order to ensure a problem-free season.

Winterizing

that seasonal cabin or lake home

W

ith the warm weather wrapping up for the summer, and the leaves beginning to show off their warm hues, it is safe to say that winter will be upon us shortly.

For the communities in Otter Tail County and surrounding lakes areas, the seasonal resident or “snowbird is likely to be packing up and making the anticipated move south; where winter likely means pants and a sweatshirt. Although the thought of leaving the cold weather and snow behind for the year may be enticing, it isn’t as easy as 18

FALL HOME MAGAZINE 2015

packing a bag, locking the door, and heading south. There are certain preparations that need to be made in order to safely leave a cabin or home vacant for the winter. According to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, if you do not plan on using your summer home at all during the cold winter months and are winterizing your plumbing, simply turning off the furnace is acceptable. It is though, suggested to vacuum ones furnace interior, change the air filter as needed and check any belts for wear each year. If you have a high efficiency furnace that is left on at a lower temperature

for the winter, it is imperative that one check to make sure there is no water drip into the system to ensure there is no freezing as a result. Winterizing the plumbing is another important aspect of preparing a cabin for the off-season. Even though insulated plumbing may help prevent freezing, it may not provide enough protection unless there is a continuous heat source keeping the pipes at an above freezing temperature. If the water is to be shut off, then the pipes should be completely drained to avoid freezing inside the pipes themselves. Water heaters and appliances also need to be drained in the same

n Change out dirty furnace filters to ensure air quality is at its best as you lock everything up and prepare to leave for winter.

manner. According to Cathy Tran, Supervisor and Plumbing Plan Reviewer for the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry, other than being drained, the water distribution piping can be blown dry from the system with clean, compressed air from an oil free compressor or storage tank. Each faucet in plumbing fixtures must be emptied properly in order to avoid winter issues down the road. It is best to contact a plumbing professional for any specific recommendations and requirements. Taking care of and maintaining your septic tank correctly is vital for avoiding costly repairs the following year. According to the University of Minnesota Water Resource

20

FALL HOME MAGAZINE 2015

Management Educator Extension, one should consider pumping the septic tank when closing the cabin for the winter, or if it’s rarely used. If you live in an area with a high water table, make sure your tank was designed for high water table conditions. In many cases, late fall pumping is not recommended for that reason. If the water table is high around the tank, it can cause pressure on the tank, potentially damaging it or causing it to pop out of the ground. Something else to think about, when the tank gets pumped, it takes time for the bacteria to get back to normal operating conditions. Lastly, taking care of one’s lawn should be taken into account.

If fall lawn fertilizing is a must, a phosphorus-free product must be used; and should be applied no closer than 20 feet from lakes or rivers according to the MPCA. Raking and collecting leaves in order to compost them will also keep bodies of water clean as well as provide natural fertilizer for your wintering lawn. One should also consider leaving the lawn alone after September, that extra growth length will help capture snow and provide insulation for anything needing to be protected below. Taking the necessary precautions before leaving for the season reduces the risk for any unwanted surprises when returning again in the spring.

Orange bird feeders

fun for birds and humans

O

ne of my favorite fall crafts is making homemade orange bird feeders. To me, this simple, organic bird feeder is a great way to kick off fall, as it brings together all the colors and smells of the autumn season. Simple, quick and very aromatic, it is also a great project to do with kids 22

of all ages. Waxing a bit nostalgic here, I use to make these feeders with my own kids when they were in preschool, and it has remained a fall favorite ever since. This technique allows for subtle changes to be included thus personalizing the feeders to your desired result. Whatever size organic cup you can think up, will change up the size of the project. Big or small, it’s up to you.

An orange cup bird feeder, for example can be made using leftover orange halves and simple items from your pantry. You can upcycle orange halves used for juicing by turning the hollowed out halves as into bird feeder “cups”. In addition to a variety of great premixed bird seeds and feeds on the market and available at local pet food stores, a person can make their own bird mix by combining things such as

sunflower seeds, peanuts, dried cranberries, corn kernels and sesame sticks. Once combined add a combination of melted 1/4 cup of butter and 1/2 cup peanut butter. Once combined over a low heat, pour a tablespoon or two of the peanut butter/ butter mixture into each cup to help stabilize the tem and provide a base for the homemade bird feed. This will help prevent the feed from falling out of the hollowed orange halves. Sprinkle a handful of your nut and berry mix into each cup and pat it into the base. There you have it, a homemade bird feeder! Adding a pop of color to your landscape as well as a meal to wildlife present, now place your cup outside: either string up with twine and hang from a tree branch or simply stake them in a garden on a sturdy stick. After you’ve finished, you can tell your friends and family, “It’s for the birds!”

Switching to LED bulbs

is becoming more affordable and appealing n LED lights can be used most anywhere these days, even sleek lamps and sconces.

T

he use of LED bulbs in homes is on the rise nationwide, and with good reason. Not only are they more energy efficient than their traditional counterparts, LEDs are becoming more affordable upfront. Indeed, of the United States’ four billion residential light bulb sockets, less than 10 percent are filled with LED lighting; but by 2020, more than 50 percent will be LED, according to industry estimates. This year alone, the consumer lighting market is anticipated to more than double 26

with LED, while traditional CFL bulb usage is expected to decrease. LED is not a new technology and has been on the market for years. So what is driving this sudden consumer shift? New light bulb designs are making these cost-efficient bulbs more convenient, attractive and affordable. In fact, certain designs retail as low as under $10 for a three-pack of bulbs, a price point that will entice many homeowners to make the switch to LED. Designed to be a good alternative to general purpose replacement CFL bulbs, they also can be used anywhere, from sockets found in basements, sheds, and garages to table and floor lamps, adding up to substantial energy savings over time. These bulbs are available instore at a variety of hardware or big box retailers such as The Home Depot. Electric companies are also actively helping people to switch to LED. Lake Region Electric Coop, for example, offers a way to even pay for these energy saving, yet sometimes costly bulbs through their EASY-PAY program. n Just by painting one wall in orange can create a sense of vibrancy in a once cool, white room.

Fun uses for leftover paint I

f you’re sitting on a stash of leftover latex paint, you have a gold mine when it comes to home decorating. With a little imagination and creative flair, you can use paint leftovers to give your home extra appeal, and have lots of fun in the process.

Want to give it a go? Here are 10 great ideas, courtesy of the Paint Quality Institute. Try one, try all, or better yet, try something that’s yours alone. Regardless, you’ll be surprised at the way forgotten paint can infuse new life into your home interior. -1. Make kitchen items kitschy. It 30

FALL HOME MAGAZINE 2015

takes only a little leftover paint to impart canisters, coasters, or the handles of wooden spoons and spatulas with bright, fun color that can make cooking more joyful. -2. Colorize some flowerpots. In the same way, planters and flowerpots can be decorated with paint color -- the more, the merrier. Paint them one solid color, or embellish them with pattern for more panache! -3. Dress up a dresser. Have an old dresser that’s tired-looking? Spice it up with paint. Use different colors on different parts for added visual interest. Do the same with an old stool, table, or cabinet.

-4. Rejuvenate “junk” furniture. Check out your attic or your neighbors’ discards. You might find hidden treasure in the form of a unique piece just pining for a fresh coat of paint. -5. Put a stamp on your walls. Add pizzazz to painted walls with a handcrafted patterned border. Fashion a “stamp” out of an old sponge in the pattern of your choice, then dip it in the leftover paint and dab new color onto the walls. Voila! Custom design. -6. Speak with an accent. Express your home’s individuality by adding accent color to a door, doorway, or an entire wall. The unexpected color will make your interior something special.

n Adding an accent color like blue can add a completely different calming feel to a room.

-7. Beautify a built-in. Embellish built-in bookcases, cabinets, or a mantelpiece with leftover paint to create striking elements in your décor. -8. Stencil something. Using a homemade or commercial stencil, apply paint to just about anything – a piece of furniture, a wall, or even the floor. It can render the ordinary, extraordinary. -9. Make like an artist. Why buy art supplies, when you already have a handpicked palette of colors you like? Use them as 32

is, or mix them as needed to create murals or fine art. -10. Frame your artwork. Repaint the frames on your prints, paintings, and drawings to give them a fresh appearance. Or, paint a simulated “frame” right on the wall to draw attention to favorite objects or sculpture. Most of these projects take just a small amount of paint, but they can make a big difference in your home décor. For more information, go to www.paintquality.com.

Fall home and garden clean-up projects n Cleaning a deck is a whole lot easier these days thanks to power washers.

Tips for powering washing

F

all is the ideal season to tick items off your home exterior to-do list. The weather is finally cooler, making the work more enjoyable; and a thorough fall clean-up will give you peace of mind all winter.

Your MVP during home maintenance season can be the pressure washer. Up to 75 times more powerful than a garden hose, a pressure washer is a versatile tool that offers an efficient way to get a variety of cleaning tasks done. Deck Once you’re ready to stash away outdoor furniture for the season, remem34

FALL HOME MAGAZINE 2015

ber to wash it down first for a deeper clean than a garden hose can provide. Before moving these items into storage, first let them dry completely. Ensure your deck is free of mold and debris. A thorough clean will also serve to prep your deck for weatherproofing with a stain or sealant (another useful task to include on your fall checklist.) Outdoor Surfaces Special attachments for the washer can rejuvenate driveways, patios, sidewalks and other large flat surfaces quickly and with no streaking. Attachments come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Make sure you get the right one for the model of your power washer.

Grill Cleaning your grill is a breeze with a pressure washer. First disconnect the propane tank and move it away from the area. Disconnect any electrical lines. Prop up the hood and remove the grates. Treat the entire grill with a degreasing solution, working from the bottom of the cart up to the grill bed. Let the degreaser work for a few minutes. Be careful around gas hoses, connections, electrical components or heating elements. Using a general medium-pressure spray pattern, flush detergent and rinse any residue, working from the top down. Let the grill dry thoroughly, then coat with nonstick oil to help reduce future build-up.

Safety Operate a pressure washer only outside, far away from windows, doors and vents to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide gas from accumulating and potentially being drawn towards occupied spaces. Always wear goggles and closed-toe footwear when operating a pressure washer. Don’t spray near children, pets, electrical wires, or power lines. After use, allow the unit to cool down before storing. Efficiency To switch between jobs more efficiently, consider a unit that offers versatility in its function. Look for models that offer a high pressure mode as well as a high flow mode which delivers up to five gallons of water per minute to rinse away soap and debris on delicate surfaces like patio furniture, vehicles and second story windows. 36

FALL HOME MAGAZINE 2015

n Power washer attachments can increase the many large, outdoor cleaning jobs that can be tackled in a shorter time and with a lot less effort.

Power washers can make any job easier. When it comes to outdoor cleaning of siding, sidewalks and decking, they can make big jobs smaller by simply the flip of a power button and swish of a wand.

So, the next time you have a big outside clean up task, think of grabbing your power washer to save you valuable time and elbow grease. (StatePoint)

Make over your door

Tips to make a grand entrance

T

here are many reasons why a home could need a door makeover. Entry doors, like other major components of the home, can wear out over time and need to be replaced. Additionally, homeowners may “inherit” a door on a home they’ve recently purchased and wish to change the style to a better one in order to complement their home’s personality. “Homeowners don’t need to live with a front entry door that they don’t like or that has become inefficient over time,” says Donna Contat at Therma-Tru Corp. “From a curb appeal and investment standpoint, it can make good economic sense to replace a front entry door.” In fact, entry door replacement consistently ranks among the most valuable remodeling projects in the annual “Cost vs. Value Report,” published by Remodeling magazine. The experts at ThermaTru are offering tips for evaluating your current door, and insights on door aesthetics and components. 38

FALL HOME MAGAZINE 2015

n A fiberglass door with doorlites and sidelites creates a stunning entryway.

-Evaluate your current door: touch your door. If you can feel the exterior temperatures from the inside, you may not have adequate insulation. Also check its appearance. For wood doors, check for warping or rotting. For steel, check for dings and rust. Final item: does the style of your door

match the design of your home? -Check on what’s inside your door: A door is actually a system of various components. Locks should operate smoothly and be strong enough to help protect your home. A multi-point locking system that engages a series of locks at several places on the frame can offer peace-of-

mind. -Slam your door: doors experience wear and tear over time. Be sure any replacement door you purchase is constructed and tested to withstand harsh treatment. Consider materials such as fiberglass, which can offer the beauty of such classic materials as wood, while being low-maintenance and long-lasting. -Does your door have appeal: curb appeal isn’t just a buzz word? It’s the wow factor people get when they drive by your home and the cozy feel that welcomes guests to come in and stay a while. Try a paintable fiberglass door to add a pop of color or stick to the classic look of wood grain, which, when stained, adds warmth. Either way, you can make your home’s entryway stand out with a door trim surround kit, as well as decorative or privacy glass for doorlites and sidelites. For more information about evaluating your current door for form and function, and insights on making future door purchases, see your local hardware store, lumber yard or visit ThermaTru.com.
