Joe Werner is one of the Perham area’s next generation of farmers. With his father, Albert, he cares for about 1,200 head of cattle and grows 700 acres of corn. They have breeder cows, cow and calf pairs, and heifers, as well as steers they sell in the fall. He also has a hobby – growing giant pumpkins. He started three years ago, the same

year he married the love of his life, Jessie. In that first year, he grew a giant pumpkin big enough to be a winner at a local contest. It reached 870 pounds, but then, unfortunately, split. Just one day before his wedding. “I had no idea what I was doing that first year,” Joe admitted during a recent interview. It went a little better his second year, though the pumpkins weren’t the only things growing at the Werner household – the family itself was get-

ting bigger. The couple was expecting a baby girl. “I was afraid I might be pollinating pumpkins while (Jessie) was having the baby,” Joe said, and they both laughed at the thought. He grew a pumpkin that reached 940 pounds that second year, but then it split, making it unsuitable for a contest. Now in his third year of growing giant pumpkins, it’s clear Joe has learned a great deal since those early days. He

Weather critical in determining fall colors • Colors are best when high quality foliage, a product of a warm, moist summer, is exposed to sunny, cool fall days. • Light frosts may also help, but hard freezes can ruin the display. • Physiological stresses on trees can impact the colors. • Cool, wet summers can cause premature displays of color. • A mild summer drought may actually increase the display, but severe drought usually dulls colors noticeably. • In some cases, foliage may die early and turn straw-colored due to a lack of water. • Because it is too dry to produce the vibrant reds, yellows and oranges, a severe summer drought will create a landscape filled with subtler colors of tans, bronzes and auburns. Color your world Area state parks to host fall color activities Perham Focus staff report

The rolling countryside between Perham and Fergus Falls is known throughout the state as a prime place for fall color watching. Explore Minnesota Tourism tells travelers to be sure and check out Highways 108 and 78, along with any other Otter Tail County roads of their choosing, to take in the views during the normal peak season of late September to early October. Visitors will get an eyeful not only of the bright yellows, oranges and reds that paint the landscape every fall, but will also take in the many lakes, hills, farmsteads and other features that make this area so unique. For those willing to take a little hike, a can’t-miss spot for fall color viewing is Inspiration Peak, off County Road 38. From the top of the peak, it’s all woods for as far as the eye can see, in all directions. In the fall, the view is especially grand. The area’s two state parks, Maplewood and Glendalough, are also well known for their fall colors. Both parks offer special events to cater to color watchers and promote autumn tourism. Every year, Maplewood holds Leaf Days, a celebration of fall colors that includes a number of scheduled educational and recreational activities for the public to enjoy. “The Friends of Maplewood will be hosting two weekends of events,” said Jeff Fjestad, of Maplewood State Park. Leaf Days events will take place the last weekend of September and the first weekend of October, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All activities will begin at the Josh Hanson Memorial Picnic Shelter. One of these activities, Nature Photography for Beginners, will include a half-hour instructional portion as well as an outdoor photography session. According to

the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources website, participants in this activity will learn how to take shots of wildlife, plants and landscapes. Digital cameras will be available to those who don’t bring their own. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The course will start at 10:30 a.m. on both Saturday, Sept. 28 and Sunday, Sept. 29. Also starting at 10:30 a.m., Sept. 28 only, will be a class on drawing Maplewood landscapes. Lila Stoffel, a retired Minnesota State University of Moorhead Professor of Art, will teach landscape drawing with colored pencils and chalk pencils. All ages will be welcome, but children should be accompanied by an adult. Supplies will be provided. Later that day, starting at 1:30 p.m., preschool and school-aged children will be able to learn about the many different animals that make their homes in trees, and will make a craft project to take home. On Saturday, Oct. 5, Maplewood will host its third annual digital scavenger hunt as a part of Leaf Days. Teams of up to five people, digital cameras in hand, will explore and take pictures of the park’s fall color displays. There will be a beginner’s division and an advanced division. The first three teams in each division that make it back to the registration table within an hour with the most correct pictures will win prizes. Registration will start at 1:45 p.m., with the scavenger hunt to follow at 2 p.m. For more information on Leaf Days, call the park at 218-863-8383. Maplewood is located seven miles east of Pelican Rapids on State Highway 108. At Glendalough, which is located south of Ottertail (take Highway 78 south to County Highway 16 east to the park entrance), visitors will be able to enjoy the fall colors from the seats of their own bicycles. Glendalough will be hosting a fall color bike tour on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to noon. This casual 4-mile ride will take participants along the park’s newly completed bike trail. A guide will discuss the fall changes in the prairie and forest, while riders enjoy the autumn scenery. For more information, call the park at 218-864-0110.

Weekends in the fall can be a difficult time to fill. Kids are busy with homework, sports and other events. The holiday season begins to loom in the future. Not to mention, no one knows what the weather will be, and it will probably change within five minutes. While it’s tempting to stay inside at this time of year, try to get out, about and into the autumn atmosphere. A little forethought and creativity is everything needed for an awesome autumn outing that the whole family will enjoy. Step 1: Wander the Wonderful Woods Create your own digital scavenger hunt. Try to keep a location in mind while creating the list. Where will it be? Is it Grandpa’s farm, a nature reserve, a local park or the woods by the lake? Location will affect what sort of items are around. An alternative would be to have an ABC hunt. Find something for each let-

ter of the alphabet, and whoever finds the most, wins. While wandering and searching, don’t forget to enjoy the beautiful fall color, and gather some favorite leaves for the next project on this list. If a plant is unfamiliar, try using a field book or smartphone app to identify it. No one wants to get poison ivy. Step 2: LEAF IT TO THE ARTISTS After the scavenger hunt, bring some leaves back home for a simple, yet fun art project. “The kids like doing leaf rubbings after we go outside,” said Sharon Kalina of Cuddlebug Care in Perham. Supplies for leaf rubbings are usually easy to find: leaves, white paper and some crayons without wrappers. Lay the leaf with the bottom, veined side facing up, and then place white paper over the leaf. Hold the crayon chunk so the longer side rubs across the leaf. According to Kalina, this is also a good way to use up crayon stubs and other broken bits.

Kalina suggested cutting and gluing kids’ favorite rubbings onto construction paper. Laminated sheets can then be used as unique placemats for Thanksgiving. Elizabeth Huwe/FOCUS

Layering leaves is another way to experiment with leaf rubbing. Elizabeth Huwe/FOCUS

Use even pressure while rubbing to capture more of the leaf’s detail.

Encourage kids to experiment with mixing colors or different leaves. “I have them use different fall colors … really neat to see the leaf appear,” said Kalina. What happens if the leaf is moved? How does it look after two leaves are layered? Which colors look nicest together?

Step 3: rake in the refreshments After a scavenger hunt and craft, chances are, a snack will be in order. These rake-shaped cookies are sure to be a huge hit. Have a hot mug of apple cider or cocoa to wash it down while everyone shares their favorite moments from the day.

Elizabeth Huwe/FOCUS

Rake cookies and apple cider are a sweet finale to a day of autumn adventure.

Short-term plans, long-term results

Conservation efforts made today help create a better tomorrow Elizabeth Huwe/FOCUS

More than 20 people joined the Soil and Water Conservation District’s tour of projects around the Ottertail area on Aug. 29. Elizabeth Huwe ehuwe@perhamfocus.com

Conservation is a year-long commitment for the members of East and West Otter Tail’s Soil and Water Conservation Districts, or SWCD. In fact, conservation is the foundation of everything they do. On Aug. 29, the two SWCDs held a tour around Ottertail to demonstrate some of their work and explain why it is so vitally important to the area. The dedication of the local team ensures that progress has and will continue to happen. Working for results Darren Newville, district manager of the East Otter Tail SWCD, said partnerships with assorted agencies and private 12 | FALL Scene SEPTEMBER 2013

citizens are vital to completing projects and reaching goals. The conservation districts work with the Department of Natural Resources, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Farm Service Agency, state and federal Department of Agriculture, and more. Of course, even the best of partnerships can run into the occasional snag. “It took us two years to get the permit for this,” said Newville, about a project to save an eroding river bank. Why did the permit take so long? “The DNR doesn’t like using rock,” he said. “They wanted wood.” Over a five-year span, somewhere between 10 and 15 feet of riverside was swept away, according to the project’s engineer. Highline poles had to be moved

back when they were no longer stable. The river was carving its way closer to a home and other buildings. The four stone “stream barbs” were finally installed in October 2012. The rock projections were engineered at specific angles to redirect the current of the Otter Tail River away from the vulnerable bank. Even with this past spring’s high water conditions, the project stayed in place. Today, it continues to prevent any further erosion. “We create short-term plans with the aim of creating long-term results,” explained Newville. When the barbs deflect water, a small dead pool is created, where bits of dirt and other sediment settle to the bottom.

Elizabeth Huwe/FOCUS

Brad Mergens, district manager for the West Otter Tail Soil and Water Conservation District, and Bruce Becker (above right), a Natural Resources Conservation Service district conservationist, explain the process and effects of a wetland restoration program. The 10 acres of restored wetland now drain into Leaf Lake. Four weather stations (above) like this have been installed in Otter Tail County to monitor moisture and other atmospheric data. Elizabeth Huwe/FOCUS

Rain gardens are strategically installed to prevent precipitation from running into other water sources and eroding soil.

Eventually, a sand bar will form and continue to protect the spot. The benefits of stopping the damage are even more far reaching. “Our soil is naturally high in phosphorus, which algae needs,” Newville continued. “When topsoil goes into the water system, phosphorus levels go up, and so does the amount of algae.” Out of control algae growth can then negatively affect the other aquatic life. It’s a cycle that can easily be spun off course. SEPTEMBER 2013 FALL Scene | 13

Elizabeth Huwe/FOCUS

Eric Larson, area engineer for the Natural Resources Conservation Service, checks a stream barb in the Otter Tail River in October 2012. Stream barbs deflect the river’s current from a weakened bank. The Soil and Water Conservation District estimates that at least 10 feet of bank has been eroded over the past five years

Private land, public benefits “It’s really fun to see the end product when you get out in the field and see what’s utilized from everything,” said Julie Welter, the county executive director for East Otter Tail’s Farm Service Agency. She and others from the SWCD’s partner organizations were along for the tour of completed conservation projects. One of the highlights was Carl Moen’s series of land and water management improvements. “When I grew up here in 1951,” said Moen, “we were watering the cattle out of the creek. I just looked at it like … I’m very close to the lake, so it was very easy for the lake people to look at me and be critical of the cattle. One’s there taking a pee in the water, and another one was drinking it. I figured there was no way I could win.” Moen was motivated by more than grossed-out lake-goers. “I very much wanted to do what we did, and get the cattle fenced out of the creek. I think we’ve basically done as much as we could do to avoid any criticism of me as a farmer doing anything to pollute the lake. Everything I’ve done has been to improve water quality.” Through the Conservation Reserve Program and Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program, Moen has planted more than 10 varieties of shrubs and trees along his creek. These plants filter the water, hold soil in place, and provide food for wildlife. Downstream, Moen said, the pleasant water enticed a beaver to build a dam. When the water pools near the dam, more silt filters out, and the water’s quality improves again as it flows to the lake. It’s that same cycle, again and again.

Perham area great for fall hunting, fishing Tom Hintgen For the Perham Focus

Tom Hintgen/FOCUS

Richard Tomhave enjoys fall hunting and fishing in the Perham area and other parts of Otter Tail County. He recently inspected his 12-gauge shotgun in anticipation of this fall’s duck and goose hunting.

Many Otter Tail County residents, especially hunters and fishermen, say that fall is the best season of the year. Among those is Richard Tomhave, an outdoorsman who fishes and hunts in many parts of the county, including areas in rural Perham. “This is the time of year to have your firearms cleaned, and make sure your other fall hunting and fishing provisions are in place,” said Tomhave. “One of my favorite fall activities is goose hunting, and as early as August I want to make sure that my goose decoys are in order.” Tomhave and other active outdoorsmen take seriously their efforts to check out all fall hunting and fishing provisions. They make sure they have adequate supplies, purchase items they’ll need for the upcoming season, and do everything else they need to do in order to make fall hunting and fishing fun and successful. “You can never plan ahead too much,” said Tomhave. He started hunting at a slough near the family farm northwest of Fergus Falls as a teenager in the 1960s, along what’s now referred to as Weyrens Road, where he built a new home several years ago. “Yes, duck hunting is something I look forward to every year, and I can hunt a very short distance from my home” he said. “Over the years I’ve been fortunate to shoot my share of mallards, wood ducks and teal. Goose hunting is something I also enjoy doing.” Tomhave, for the past several years, also has enjoyed fall walleye fishing with a professional guide on various lakes in Otter Tail County. “Fall is a beautiful time for fishing,” he said, “and we usually have good luck catching walleye. Plus, after Labor Day, there aren’t as many boats on the area lakes.” Tomhave also plans to purchase a fall turkey hunting license. The licenses can be bought online, by telephone and where hunting and fishing licenses are sold. Each turkey hunter will be required to select a hunt area prior to purchasing a license.

“Turkey hunting has really grown in popularity in recent years,” he said. “In fact, noted Minnesota outdoorsman Rick Schara says that turkey hunting is now his favorite sport. There are lots of good turkey hunting areas throughout our county.” Rick Long came to live in Otter Tail County in 1975 and has been an avid duck hunter in this area for just short of 40 years. His favorite place to hunt is at a diving duck spot where he shoots mostly ringbills, bluegills and redhead ducks. Long’s main hunting partner over the years has been Van Ellig. Since Ellig is still in his working years, the retired Long often hunts alone at their duck blind. When together, they rely on Ellig’s hunting dog for duck retrieval. Long also uses a boat to retrieve fallen ducks. “We have a variety of duck decoys that we use,” Long said. “Van and I, over the years, have averaged close to 25 days of hunting together each fall. We don’t see each other very often at other times during the year, so it’s this time when we catch up on news about what our families are doing. It’s great camaraderie.” Hunting and fishing openers are a Minnesota sporting tradition, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources wants outdoorsmen to be ready to go. The DNR has a recruitment and retention program goal to provide more opportunities for Minnesotans to connect with their hunting and fishing heritage. Youth groups, hunting organizations and service organizations are the primary partners with DNR on recruitment and retention projects. Any individual or organization that has ideas for new projects or wants to become involved in existing projects should contact the nearest DNR office. Examples of projects include organizing special youth hunting events, the National Archery in the Schools Program, and mentoring programs. The DNR is promoting National Hunting and Fishing Day this year on Saturday, Sept. 28. Outdoorsmen say, “Join us in a nationwide celebration. Hunt, fish and share the pride.”

Museums open their doors to more than historical displays

Members of the Lady Slippers Garden Club held their annual garden show in the Main Gallery of the In Their Own Words Veterans Museum this year. More and more community groups are beginning to utilize space within ITOW for their events.

Perham is home to not one, but two exceptional museums. And lately, those museums have been broadening their reach beyond the usual historical exhibits, becoming centers of social activity and entertainment. The Friends of the Museum, which oversees both the History Museum of East Otter Tail County and the In Their Own Words (ITOW) Veterans Museum, has been offering space for a variety of public uses. Recently, ITOW has been host to a garden show, a Rotary meeting and a child’s birthday party. “While veterans activities will always have priority scheduling at the ITOW, there is plenty of space outside of the exhibit hall and time in the schedule for a variety of community uses,” said Darla Ellingson, Friends of the Museum CEO. “The former VFW building went through $1 million renovation, and has several beautiful rooms that can be used for ongoing or one-time use.” Venues include a 250-capacity main gallery, two meeting rooms, and a midsize room for events of about 75 people. Rooms are served by an auxiliary space that can be used for catering set-up, and accessible bathrooms, with rates that are competitive to area community centers.

operations, with the former VFW streetside lobby used to accept donations of re-saleable merchandise from the public. Down the road, the History Museum of East Otter Tail County has opened its doors to pirates and murderers – well, stories of them, at least. A free monthly speaker series landed treasure hunter Terry Shannon in August, who engaged guests with tales of scouring the Florida treasure coast for Spanish Plate Fleet artifacts. September’s event featured author Shirlee Taylor, who wrote about Perham’s double murder and lynching in the summer of 1882. To see what’s coming up next at the history museum, visit its face book page, or go to the website, historymuseumeot. com. Visitors are also encouraged to stop by and see the place in person, at 230 First Avenue North. For more information about renting space at ITOW, contact Ellingson at darlaellingson@itowmuseum.org or call 346-7678. ITOW is located at 805 West Main Street and can also be found at itowmuseum.org and on facebook. Both museums are generally open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, though hours may vary seasonally.

The ITOW Veterans Museum in Perham is broadening its horizons, opening up to the public as a rentable space for group gatherings. While single-day events are welcome, Ellingson hopes to encourage use by groups or businesses that have a weekly need for space. “Having the ITOW active, especially during the day, will increase awareness for the veterans’ stories contained in the museum exhibits while financially supporting both museums,” said Ellingson. “The community benefits from affordable rates and the earned income assists our nonprofit to be more self-sustaining.” The Friends group already runs an allvolunteer thrift store in the front of the ITOW building to help support museum
