Custom cabinets? Custom cabinets can be used to accommodate the special needs of homeowners. These cabinets were made to a height of 33 inches, rather than the average 36 inches, for easier access.

CAN-DO!

W

hen it comes to the function of kitchens and other storage-heavy rooms in the home, cabinets are the overwhelming MVPs.

There are several cabinet options for homeowners to consider in new building and renovation projects, and one of those may be unfairly eliminated early on in the planning process because of perceptions. Custom cabinets might sound expensive, complicated and like an unnecessary gamble with limited returns – but Bruce Johnson and Mike Sanders, joint owners of Ottertail Cabinet Company disagree with those assumptions. Mike and Bruce have more than 30 years’ experience each in creating custom cabinet setups in residential and commercial settings. “We fit the cabinets to the space a person has,” said Mike, when asked to sum up what they do. “It’s not, ‘Well, they’re this size, so that’s what you can put there.’ We build something to suit.” For remodeling projects, they will go out to a house, measure the spaces 4 SPRING HOME MAGAZINE 2015

Meet the makers “Boy, that was a long time ago!” Mike Sanders said, laughing, when asked how he got into making cabinets. He first learned about wood working from his father, who did wood working as a hobby. Mike studied architectural technology in college, worked at a large cabinetry business for several years and then started Ottertail Custom Cabinetry 28 years ago. Bruce Johnson took a different route to find his way cabinetry.

“I was an art major in college, and I kind of gravitated to the woodworking business,” Bruce said, adding that he was drawn to the creativity needed to efficiently and effectively use space. He started his own shop, Tectonic Woodworking, in 2001. Mike and Bruce recently combined their respective shops to form Ottertail Cabinet Company, based in Ottertail, Minn.

Left: Wasted pantry space? Not here, with pull-out drawers, indoor shelves and small racks on hinges, allowing for maximum accessibility and storage. Right: With custom cabinets, options for how to use each scrap of space are almost endless – for example, this narrow pull-out spice cabinet near a cooktop.

where cabinets will be and provide an estimate. On new homes, they will start from blue prints and then measure when construction is nearly done to ensure the best fit and that no measurements have changed. “I say I’m not a kitchen designer, but I really am,” Bruce said. “We can go out, start from scratch and design you a kitchen.” “We take their ideas help make them reality,” Mike said of the next step – coming up with the physical plan of what to build and how. “You find out what ideas and expectations they have.” With customers’ increased exposure

to design ideas through magazines, television channels and websites, Bruce and Mike said they’ve begun to see more variety and personalization happening in homes. “That’s fantastic,” Mike said, of when clients bring in clippings for inspiration. “It’s giving them what they want. The cookie-cutter kitchen is no more.” Customization can be done from slabs of granite, all the way down to unique drawer handles. “We’re kind of a one-stop shop,” Bruce said. “We do the cabinets, counter tops, finishing and installation.”

“We’ve done everything from black walnut to alder and cherry to hickory,” Mike said of the variety of woods they have used on past projects. While almost all types of wood can be used for cabinets and be durable, Mike cautioned that, even with the better finishes offered today, softer wood varieties can still be dinged or show more wear. Cabinet doors can also be customized with carving or etching. Even curved cabinets and doors can be crafted now. There are also a host of options for countertop materials offered through Ottertail Cabinet Company. SPRING HOME MAGAZINE 2015

Stone Granite and quartz are the main types of stone countertops. The key difference between the two is that granite is mined and sliced into whole slabs – giving it large, swirling patterns and natural variations within the stone. As natural stone, granite does have some porous qualities, but a sealant is applied to it. Quartz tops are technically manmade, with bits of ground stone formed and bonded into slabs with a polymer. This means quartz tops are nonporous; however, the production process means the patterns are limited to smaller flecks and pieces. Both surfaces are considered to be highly durable. Corian Corian is a type solid-surface countertop that is molded, rather than cut, to work with projects. As a man-made, molded material – sinks can be added as part of the whole piece. While Corian can be scratched, its solid-colored nature means that those marks can be sanded and buffed away for like-new finishes. Laminate Price is the main advantage of using laminate countertops, Mike said. It has also advanced beyond the laminate that many may think of from older kitchens – with innovations such as high definition surfaces that can mimic more expensive materials. Edge treatments have also been added, giving more personalization potential. However, scratches or other damage on laminate is still there to stay – with no Corian-like repair options at this point. It may come as a surprise, but even

Cabinets with contrasting tops can make a statement in a kitchen and bring additional interest with small details in the hardware and door panels.

the insides of cabinets now have customization options. “Cabinets are getting much more functional,” Bruce said. Rolling shelves, back-of-door racks and other innovations mean there are fewer deep, dark cavernous spaces where items can be forgotten. Meanwhile, Mike and Bruce said, customers often find a smaller selection of materials, countertops, finishes and sizes from big-box retailers while searching for a bargain option. The thing is – price tags can be somewhat deceiving. “We are priced competitive too,” Bruce said. “People always think, ‘I can’t afford custom.’ But, if they get a price from us and go to the lumber yard or other store, they realize… they can.” All of the work is included through

their shop, said Bruce and Mike. “You add the other costs in, like the installation, delivery and sales tax,” Mike said of what hidden factors can tip the price of mass-produced cabinets over that of custom. “In our case, where we install the cabinets, you don’t have sales tax. It’s goofy, but… that can make a big difference.” Sales tax is paid on the materials used, they explained – but – when the cabinets are installed, it becomes part of the house and falls under real estate taxes. “I always like to say, we’re complete,” Mike said of the level of service they offer. “All you have to do is dust them out, then put your dishes away. Aloe My husband brought home a small clipping from a co-worker’s aloe plant a few years ago to use on sunburn. “Aloe-icious” helped with the sunburn so we kept him. This is just one of the wonderful benefits of this succulent. The aloe plant has grown quickly and has been repotted several times. Aloe can help remove formaldehyde and benzene, which are found in chemical-based cleaners and paints. The plant is poisonous to dogs and cats, however. Spider plant Another plant that is known for removing toxins from the air is the spider plant. It also filters formadehyde and benzene, along with carbon monoxide. It is also very easy to keep alive and will multiply, allowing a person to share this magical plant with others. Unlike aloe, the spider plant is safe for dogs and cats. Peace lily Peace lilies ranked highest at cleansing nearly all chemicals floating around in today’s home air. These

were the most effective plants at removing benzene, formaldehyde, xylene, toluene and trichloroethylene from the atmosphere. Peace lilies perform well even under low-light conditions. They can be located several feet away from a window. Snake plant Sanseveria, commonly referred to as the snake plant, performed second highest, removing nearly all air contaminants. This was good news because they’re not only easy to grow but longliving, with plants commonly reaching ages of 25 to 40 years old. Being a succulent, they are tolerant of occasional neglect. A NASA research study confirmed that many of these plants remove dangerous air toxins. NASA conducted research nearly 30 years ago to determine if plants could remove toxic chemicals from indoor air. They were looking for ways to cleanse the atmosphere inside future space stations. The closed-in conditions required ways to purify the air of chemicals given off by the space equipment and structural components. The study

SAVINGS That Just Won’t Quit New Construction, Remodeling, Efficiency Upgrading

was the first of its kind, and is still cited today in literature discussing the health benefits of houseplants. NASA used sealed test chambers that were injected with chemicals commonly found in interior spaces. Scientists studied dozens of houseplant species to determine which, if any, could reduce toxins in the air. NASA concluded that houseplants were indeed highly effective at removing harmful substances from indoor atmospheres. They published a list of preferred species, along with specific chemicals that each plant was most efficient at cleansing from the air. Their study has been criticized by some scientists who feel the laboratory test chambers were not modeled closely enough to a typical house to conclude that the results will be equal for homeowners. Additional research under home conditions would be an interesting complement to NASA’s findings. Don Kinzler contributed to this story. He is a lifelong gardener and worked as an NDSU Extension horticulturist.

W

hen Esther McGinnis lived in the Twin Cities, the configuration of her yard didn’t allow her to grow a traditional garden, so she decided to get creative.

“I just started sticking tomatoes here and cucumbers there because I had to have a Greek salad,” she said. She planted her veggies and herbs among her flowers, creating a landscape that was both beautiful and edible. Now that McGinnis is a North Dakota State University Extension horticulturist and Department of Plant Sciences assistant professor, she’s been teaching others to grow their gardens “outside the box” with a method called edible landscaping. 12

SPRING HOME MAGAZINE 2015

“It’s really simple. It’s a matter of incorporating edible plants into the ornamental landscape,” said McGinnis, who has been with NDSU for two years and is also director of the North Dakota Extension Master Gardener Program. “You could have vegetables in the middle of your flower garden. It’s making the most use that you can out of your yard.” It’s a technique that has really become popular over the past five years, McGinnis said, both because yards are getting smaller and because people are more concerned about where their food comes from and whether things like pesticides and herbicides are used to grow the produce. “I think people are a little afraid of vegetable gardening because they may not have done it in the past,” she said. “With an edible landscape, you can start

small. Pop in a few vegetables here. Pop in a shrub that produces berries there.” J.D. Shotwell, who runs Shotwell Floral with his parents, John and Annette, said the increasing cost of produce is driving more people to garden, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. “People can do simple things these days,” he said. “There are a lot more plants these days that are made for patio pots. You don’t have to put them in the ground. If somebody has a balcony, there’s a tomato plant for that.” The selection isn’t as large for potted edibles, he said, and vining plants like cucumbers, pumpkin and squash take up more room, but people don’t have to have a large garden to grow various types of produce. “It’s a great thing for kids as they’re growing up,” Shotwell said. “It’s a great way to show them where food comes

from.” Edible landscapes can be easier to care for, McGinnis said, because they’re typically smaller than traditional gardens. “You can tailor it to your own specifications so you can make it as complicated as you want or as simple as you want,” she said. “It’s essentially just swapping out landscape plants and putting in something you can harvest.” There are no city codes prohibiting gardening in the front, rear or sides of people’s yards in Fargo, Moorhead or West Fargo, but gardens are not allowed on boulevards in any of the cities. When planting edibles next to ornamentals, McGinnis said it’s important to know what the plants look like, and only harvest the edible plants because some ornamentals can be poisonous. Some people are growing plants from seeds in their homes right now, Shotwell said. The prime time to buy transplants, he said, is between

Mother’s Day and Memorial Day. “The key thing for those beginners is to never be afraid to come in and ask,” he said. “It can be complex and it can be overwhelming but it can be very simple, too, with the right direction.” To set up an edible landscape, McGinnis said: - Identify the space you want to plant and tailor your selections for that space. - Plant vegetables in full sun. - Plant lettuce and leafy greens in light shade. - Focus on areas of the yard with good soil. If you’re not sure, NDSU will test your soil for a fee. Contact the Soil Testing Laboratory at (701) 231-8942. - Or start off small by planting fruits, veggies and herbs in containers. (Eggplant and peppers may do better in a container where they get warmer than if planted in the ground.)

-Select varieties that have more aesthetic appeal. -Dinosaur kale (also called Tuscan kale) makes a nice backdrop for ornamental annuals. -Loose-leaf lettuces come in red and green varieties. They’re great for beginners and only take 45 days to mature, so they can be planted at the end of April, picked by early June, and replanted. But once the lettuce starts to bloom, it develops a bitter taste. -Some edibles, like scarlet runner bean, lavender and alliums (which include onions, shallots and garlic) produce colorful flowers. -Use a trellis for vining plants like cucumbers. -Plant herbs like dill, lemon thyme, sage, rosemary, basil and chives. -Swiss Chard boasts colorful stems. -Pansies, Lavender, Nasturtium and Borage are all edible flowers. - Fruit trees and berry shrubs make nice additions to edible landscapes. Pushing back ON ICE PUSH UPS

A

s if dealing with a Minnesotan winter isn’t enough, Mother Nature sometimes enjoys really testing the spirit and patience of lakes country residents with yet another hurdle: spring time ice push-ups on our beautiful shorelines.

Although these ice formations may appear spectacular to passersby, property owners generally don’t share this enthusiasm: these ice ridges have the ability to cause severe property damage. “Ice is the ultimate bulldozer; it’ll 14

Ice push back such as this results in loss of property, as well as costly repairs. This year’s increase in damage is attributed to minimal snowfall.

expand and push up just about any shoreline if it wants to. It can be incredibly strong and destructive,” said Pat Morstad owner of Precision Landscape and Irrigation, one of the few people who actually benefits from shoreline destruction. As homeowners peer out towards the water and take in the uprooted trees and pushed back shore, the thought would likely be, “Now what?” This year, the Minnesota DNR has come out with information sharing the proper procedures for tackling this recurring nuisance. Although there are a few benefits to these soil ridges, such as creating natural barriers for future ice push backs and collecting nutrients, the majority of

property owners will rightfully look to fix or even out ridges. In most cases, a DNR permit is not needed for the work to smooth ice ridges, as long as they fall within certain guidelines. These guides include: damage must have been created within the last year and no more than 200 feet of shoreline was affected. All areas exposed from sand and dirt being removed must immediately be stabilized to prevent further erosion. Removal or grading of ice ridges also must not disturb aquatic vegetation. The Minnesota DNR suggests that affected property owners should first contact their county’s Land and Resource Office for more information regarding

what they can and can’t legally do to fix their yards. “It really is the best idea to give us a call and let us know your issue with your shoreline. We keep a database here of all affected areas and are more than happy to direct you with the best plan of attack,” said Otter Tail County Land and Resource Manager Bill Kalar. Damage done by ice was greater this year, partially due to the weather and below average snowfall. “We have seen many more issues this year over previous years. Snow is a really great insulator, so when you add that and the high water levels to the mix, there are bound to be large amounts of push back and property damage,” said Kalar. With the increased destruction this year, landscaping companies are seeing their shoreline business skyrocket. “We’ve pretty much seen it all this season already. There has been property pushed back that had already been riprapped for protection, causing even more issues. And there has also been the only slightly affected areas that may only take us and our equipment a half hour to fix,” said Pat. These ice push backs don’t discriminate between large and small lakes; shorelines on all sizes of water bodies may be affected. Estimates for shore line repair vary significantly, based on the situation. A simple job may only cost the homeowner $100, while extensive damage can result in tens of thousands of dollars in repairs. “Some cases, there had already been a rip-rapped shore, so we first have to remove all of that rock, then go ahead and focus on leveling out and fixing the actual problem, then go back and re-assemble the rock barrier to the water. It can be a

time consuming job and that’s where the high estimates come in,” Pat explained. Precision Landscape and Irrigation has been busy around the clock fixing shorelines this spring. “Generally, we have a couple guys at every job with some sort of equipment as well. We have specialists in agronomy and have earned many certificates to be able to correctly fix any shore problem,” said Pat. Minnesotans will attest to the benefits and joys of owning lakeshore property, but at the same time, many have a neverending battle with ice and water issues.

Growing Together

Spring best time to divide, repot houseplants

P

lease don’t tell my wife, Mary, but I borrowed her best kitchen knife this week to divide houseplants. But not to worry; instead of just wiping off the excess potting soil, I washed the knife before slipping it back into its storage rack. Spring is the best time to divide and repot houseplants. As March and April’s days get longer and light levels intensify, indoor plants begin a growth spurt. Plants that benefit from dividing include Boston fern, snake plant, peace lily, cast-iron plant, spider plant and aloe vera. Multiple shoots arise from a “crown” where stems meet roots. How often should plants be divided? When their growth has multiplied outward, touching the edge of the pot, leaving very little soil that isn’t packed with roots. Such plants can be repotted into larger pots without dividing, but increasing pot size can’t continue indefinitely. Plants whose centers have become sparse, with all nice growth on the perimeter can be refigured by dividing and replanting the vigorous parts. Dividing is also a way to multiply plants when you’d like a few more. Begin by choosing a container and soil. Plastic pots are more common, but old fashioned unglazed clay pots breathe and are more forgiving of overwatering. Always soak new clay pots in water for several hours before using. Cheap potting soils that feel heavy in the bag are a poor buy because plants won’t grow as well. Top quality mixes are light, high in peat moss and aggregate, and drain well. Miracle Gro Potting Mix and mixes recommended by locally owned garden centers perform well. The plant upon which you’ll perform surgery should be neither too wet nor too dry before the operation. Both extremes make soil and roots less workable. Water the plant a day or two in advance. Cleanup will be easier if you cover the work surface with plastic or newspaper.

To ease the plant from its pot, insert a long knife between the pot and soil/root ball. Slide the knife around the inside of the pot to break the clinging interface between soil and pot. Next place an open hand over the soil between plant stems. Turn the plant over and pull off the pot with the other hand. Avoid tugging on stems because it can injure the crown. If the pot won’t release easily, slide the knife around the inside again. Now examine the plant. Look for natural separations from multiple “offsets” that have sprung from the original. If the plant is a continuous, solid growth of stems, we can arbitrarily divide into portions.

The most common way of dividing is to cut down through the soil/roots with a sharp knife either at natural divisions, or by slicing the soil ball into halves or fourths. Although this usually works, roots are so intertwined throughout that cutting causes huge root loss. Usually the divisions recover, but there’s an alternate method. Before dividing, immerse the soil/root ball in a bucket or tub filled with water. Much of the soil will dissolve, entwined roots will loosen a little, and roots can be teased apart, preserving more. If the crown doesn’t pull apart into desired divisions, you may need to cut through the crown. The size of division to repot is your decision. Large, crowded plants are best divided at least into fourths. You can replant one chunk, or several smaller ones into a new pot. New potting soil is often quite dry straight from the bag, and should be moistened before use. Roots don’t appreciate going into dry soil, and it’s harder to wet once it’s in the pot. Add water to the bag the night before, stir well, and allow to permeate. Choose a pot size at least several inches larger in diameter than the root spread of the divisions. Don’t use a pot too large, or new plants will flounder with too much soil and moisture. Increase pot size every year or two as plants grow. Add a layer of potting soil inside the bottom of the pot. Hold the division with one hand, suspending it in the center of the pot. Add potting soil with the other hand. Jiggle and tap the pot up and down as you fill, to settle and firm the soil. Packing tightly by hand can overly compress the mix. Continue filling until the divisions are at their previous soil depth, and soil is just below the pot’s rim. Soil will settle a little more when watered. Plants seem to grow better if there is less than an inch of “headspace” in the pot. If you’re concerned you’ll hurt the plant during surgery, use a painkiller. The plant doesn’t need it, but maybe you could take a couple aspirin yourself. A DROP IN THE BUCKET, A HIT TO THE WALLET Fixing leaks around the home saves money and the environment

A

drip in the shower may seem like more of a nuisance than anything, but over time all of those little drops make a big splash.

Sixty drops a minute add up to 192 gallons a month. During the course of a year, that’s 2,304 gallons and a lot of money seeping out of homeowners’ wallets. “By conserving water, you will save money,” the University of Minnesota Extension office says in i’s literature about home water conservation. “Using a low-flow showerhead will annually save you an estimated $10 per person in water heating savings alone. Savings can be realized from water and wastewater service fees, electric city bills and longevity of your pumps and switches.” 24

SPRING HOME MAGAZINE 2015

In 2013, five northeast Minnesota groups formed a collaboration to help institutions and businesses save water and energy through reduced costs in bulk sales of items like showerheads and faucets. Minnesota Power, Comfort Systems, Northeast Region Clean Energy Resource Team, the city of Duluth and Niagra Conservation partnered in an effort to increase efficient water use. Across the state, 63 businesses, schools and local governments took part and the savings were estimated at $230,000 a year on water and energy costs. Enough water is being saved annually to fill 27 Olympic-size pools. Only a handful of northeast Minnesota groups took part in what was called the “Make A Splash” campaign. Bill Mittlefehldt, coordinator for the Northeast Region Clean Energy Resource Team, said the low turnout

could be because we have 10 percent of the world’s fresh water on our doorstep in Lake Superior. It’s easy to think we’ll always have that resource, he said. “The world is in a freshwater crisis,” Mittlefehldt said. “We need to be the stewards.” He would like to run the incentive program again. “The message is that there are lots of opportunities to save water, energy and money,” he said. “It’s critical to our water future.” Incentives included new shower heads and faucets that aerate water so less is used. The energy resource team estimates that installing a water-conserving spray valve on a commercial kitchen faucet and using it to rinse dishes could lead to a 60-percent decrease in water use, meaning $410 in water and energy savings.

Mittlefehldt said the saving from aerated faucets and shower heads could save homeowners 75 percent in water use. “I don’t think people understand,” he said of the impacts people have on available water. “We have 10 percent of the clean water in the world, but we have a growing population. Lake Superior is not the same.” The following are some tips for homeowners offered by water conservation experts from across the state: Toilets - Toilets can be the biggest waste of water around the house. A small leak in your toilet tank can be harder to find but result in more than 100 gallons of water trickling away each month. To see if your tank leaks, drop some food coloring in the tank’s water and let it sit without flushing. In an hour, return and see if the color has seeped into the bowl. - Even if there’s not a leak, you should still replace the flapper in the tank once a year. An adjustable flapper will run about $10 and can help you manage the flow. - Even without a leak, toilets can be a big water waster. Models made before 1980 can use up to 7 gallons of water per flush (gpf), but the current federal plumbing standards limit toilets to 1.6 gpf. Energy efficient varieties like dual flush toilets can use as little as 1.1 gpf, but if you’re not ready to invest in a whole new toilet, you can modify your old model. A

tank bag filled with water clips inside the tank allows for less water to fill the space. Even a filled plastic water bottle will work and can save 0.5 gpf. - A fill cycle diverter is another simple fix. The plastic device dispenses more water to the tank than to the bowl during refills, saving 0.5 gpf. - A generation ago some people used bricks to displace the water in tanks but the brick could release sediment which could clog pipes. Use a plastic container filled with water instead. Showers - Before 1980, showerheads could pump out as much as 5 gallons per minute (gpm), but the latest National Energy Policy Act showerhead standards is 2.5 gpm with some as low as 0.75 gpm. Switching to a lower-flow showerhead could save 25 to 60 percent on the water bill. - The shorter the shower, the more you save, with 2.5 gallons used every minute. - It’s common knowledge that showers (as low as 12.5 gallons with a low-flow showerhead) use less water than a bath (up to 35 gallons), but they’re not necessarily as relaxing. If you want a bath, consider filling half the tub instead of a complete fill. - While you’re waiting for your shower to warm up, catch the running water in a bucket and use it to water plants.

Faucets - A leaky faucet can add up to significant losses, but the fix could be a simple solution even a not-so-handy person could complete. Much of the time what’s needed is a new aerator on the spout which can be attached with a wrench. An older faucet can push out 2.2 gpm, but with an aerator (less than $10) a faucet can cut that almost in half. - Keep an eye on your water bill. Compare them monthly to see if there is an unexpected spike.

Springing into action

Expert tips to tackle ng spring cleani

W

ith the calendar flipping to spring, many will take part in the annual ritual of spring cleaning.

bought ahead of time and be ready to go when the cleaning starts. “It’s important to get everything ahead of time so you can keep going without interruptions,” she said.

For many, that could be fruitful effort, while others struggle to thoroughly clean their places. Katie Stauss, president of Maid Simple, a cleaning service in Grand Forks, Minn. said spring is in fact the busiest time of year for her company, but spring cleaning doesn’t have to be as difficult as many make it out to be. Stauss said knowing how to properly approach cleaning the house can make all of the difference. She said knowing some of the most commonly missed places are higher up and harder to reach, such as the tops of cabinets, the top of window frames and doors and the top of refrigerators. By knowing how to prepare and what to look for, Stauss said spring cleaning even can be enjoyable for some. She offered five tips for how to be more prepared for readers’ upcoming spring cleaning:

Declutter the house In the winter, people have a tendency to hang on to things they don’t need because the weather prevents them from going outside. Stauss said people should get rid of things they don’t need or have accrued throughout the year. “Cleaning is a good time for people to go through their belongings and get rid of clutter and other things they don’t need,” she said. Stauss said even a quick run through the house to get rid of unnecessary items will make the cleaning process go smoother and will make a big difference in the end. “When you have a lot of unnecessary items, the house tends to look more cluttered than it might actually be.”

Get supplies ready The first step in going through a fullon spring cleaning is to get the supplies out and ready, Stauss said. Much like preparing a house for painting by putting up painter’s tape and clearing the room, Stauss said she suggests people prep before going into the cleaning. All of the cleaning supplies should be 28

SPRING HOME MAGAZINE 2015

Set small goals A trap many people find themselves in is setting too lofty of expectations when they clean, Stauss said. Many people will expect to get the entire house done in one day, and most times, that’s just not realistic, in her opinion. Stauss said she encourages people to make smaller, more attainable goals. If smaller goals are set, such as getting one room done a day, people are less likely to be discouraged and quit in the

middle of the cleaning process. “When you set smaller goals, you’re more likely to accomplish them and keep cleaning,” she said. Involve the entire family Stauss said the entire family should be involved in cleaning and not just select members of the family. “Everyone lives there, so everyone should help clean it,” she said. She said it’s important for children to try to have fun and enjoy cleaning. If they do, they’ll be more involved and helpful in the long run. In the past, she said she would play games with her kids in order to get them to participate. “Even if it’s something small, it’s good to make things fun for the kids, too.” Reward yourself One of most important parts to cleaning, Stauss said, is to reward yourself in the end. Stauss said the reward can be something simple, such as getting ice cream after everything is finished. “If you set a reward at the end, everyone has something to work toward,” she said. “That helps everyone stay positive and stay on task.” The ultimate reward, however, is the clean house, Stauss said. “Everyone likes a clean house,” she said. “Spring cleaning is a very big deal for a lot of people.”

BE PREPARED

FOR A DISASTER

Personal preparedness includes being ready for emergencies at home, in the car, or anywhere someone may spend time. Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) provides information and resources to help

people better prepare for the possibility of an emergency or disaster. Being prepared can reduce fear, anxiety and losses that accompany disasters. HSEM provides some key steps to be prepared for an emergency. Logistics In case a disaster happens such as a fire or tornado, it’s important to make sure you have a record of everything in your home.

Take pictures and list items of value in every room of the home, including the garage. It’s also important to review your homeowner’s insurance periodically to make sure you are covered in case the worst happens. Make a kit People might be displaced from their homes after a disaster. can last for at least three days is key. The following items are recommended for a basic emergency supply kit: • One gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation • At least a three day supply of non-perishable food • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both • Flashlight and extra batteries • First aid kit • Whistle to signal for help • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities • Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food) • Local maps cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger Make a plan Before an emergency happens make a plan. Sit down as a family and decide where to go and how to communicate in an emergency. A disaster may mean staying in the home or evacuating to an emergency shelter. Keep a copy of the disaster plan in the emergency supply kit. It is important to periodically review the plan. Did an elderly family member move in? Is someone disabled because of an injury? It could change the plan so be ready. For more information on preparing for emergencies, visit www.ready.gov.

Tips for a successful

GARAGE SALE

A

s you work on your spring cleaning, make sure to be thinking about what you do and don’t need and plan for a garage sale.

Follow these few simple tips to make your garage or yard sale a success. Advertise your sale In order to have a successful garage sale people need to know about it. A good way to do that is to place a classified ad in the local newspaper. The Wadena Pioneer Journal can run a classified ad announcing your sale ahead of time. “It’s still the best way to advertise your garage sale,” said Pioneer Journal classified sales/receptionist Jessica Keddy. “In the summer people come in and buy the paper specifically to look for garage sales.” Call 631-2561 to place an ad in the Pioneer Journal, Intercom or online. Deadlines are 5 p.m. Monday for the Pioneer Journal and 5 p.m. Wednesday for the Intercom. To make your garage sale stand out from the others list specific items. “List your most unusual items, men’s tools, fishing, hunting gear,” Keddy suggests. In addition to advertising in the newspaper, good signage is a must. Make sure people can find your sale. Organize Garage sale-goers don’t want to dig through cluttered items that are dirty or clothes that aren’t folded or hung up. Make sure to clearly mark items and keep similar items together, such as clothing, toys, kitchenware or tools. Clothes should be hung on a rack for a nicer display and shelves should be used for displaying books, cookbooks or DVDs. Make sure to have plenty of plastic grocery bags, boxes and newspaper to wrap items for people after a purchase.

Toward the end of the sale, further discount items that you want to get rid of. Any leftover items can be given to local charities.

The right price People who are shopping at garage sales are looking for a good deal. Don’t price items too high. Also, people like special offers. “Churches do it right,” Keddy said. “They often do a buck a bag day the last day.” Place visible signs near books that are 4 for $1 or have tshirts be 2 for $1. Buy three get one free can be a catchy sign as well.

Community-wide sale The Wadena Pioneer Journal sponsors the community wide garage sales each year. This year the community wide sale coincides with June Jubilee, June 18-20. This is a great time to have a garage sale, with people coming from out of town to check out the sales. Garage sale ads will be published in the Thursday, June 11 PJ and Saturday, June 13 Intercom. Call 631-2561 for more information.
