T

he fair: a pinnacle event of summer.

With tummy-tickling rides, tasty foods, an assortment of games, animals, shows, exhibits and all-around familyfriendly fun, it’s an annual affair that truly has it all. In addition to the carnival, concessions, homemade jams and all that classic fair fare, this year’s East Otter Tail County Fair will feature some new or unique events for people to check out. A visit from the Budweiser Clydesdales, tractor pulls, a demo derby, magic shows, a hypnotist, a selfie scavenger hunt, Lego building contest, zoo animal attractions and more promise to provide a little something for everyone. The fair will start Thursday, July 20 and run through Sunday, July 23 (4-H and FFA activities start two days earlier), at the fairgrounds in Perham. As in the past, different days of the fair will be dedicated to different audiences: Thursday will be Veteran and Daycare Day, Friday Senior 4 | Summer Scene July 2017

East Otter Tail County Relay for Life brings people together in the fight against cancer

V

isitors to the area may notice that there’s a lot of purple around.

From storefronts decorated in all purple to purple Relay for Life signs posted all over, it’s hard not to notice the outpouring of support that local communities are showing this month for everyone whose lives have been touched by cancer. The annual Relay for Life is a big deal in East Otter Tail County, drawing large crowds every year and consistently raising an impressive amount of money for the cause. Last year, the event raised about $135,000; combined with funds raised at the West Otter Tail County Relay for Life, a separate relay held in Fergus Falls, that brought Otter Tail County’s ranking to fourth in the nation for counties its size, and first in the state of Minnesota. “On average, we’ve raised more than $6 for every man, woman and child living in Otter Tail County,” says Ron Anderson, a longtime volunteer organizer for the East Otter Tail County relay. “Most of that comes from the sale of luminaries – we don’t have any huge megadonors. The people really chip in. You’ll see some 4,000 of those $10 luminaries (at the relay). They spell out “hope” in the bleachers. It’s quite a light show.” The East Otter Tail County Relay for July 2017 2017 8 | Summer Scene June

Life started 23 years ago in Perham with seven teams, and raised several thousand dollars, Anderson says. Over the years, the event has grown to include an average of about 25 teams. Many of those teams return year after year, remaining faithful to the cause and working hard to raise more and more money for the American Cancer Society. A sister event – a smaller relay held every summer in Henning – has also evolved, and contributes its earnings to the East Otter Tail County pot. “We have, over the years, been very successful at a state and national level,” says Anderson. “Last year, four teams raised more than $10,000 each, and we had our first team to raise more than $15,000. No other county in the state had that many teams raise more than $10,000. They make us look good.” Anderson says it’s the nature of the people involved in the relay that makes the event so successful; participants enjoy being a part of it, and the organizers work well together. “Basically, we succeed because we like each other,” he says. ‘Lighting Up the Night with the Magic of Hope’ This year’s East Otter Tail County Relay for Life will be held on Friday, July 14 from 5:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next morning, at the Perham High School track.

The theme will be “Lighting Up the Night with the Magic of Hope.” Relay teams will arrive at the track early on Friday to set up their tents and decorate their camps in accordance with that theme. Scheduled activities – all of which are open to the public, and people can come and go as they please – will begin at 5:30 p.m. with games, prizes, food and fun for everyone. An opening ceremony to introduce the relay teams and honor cancer survivors will start at 7 p.m. As is tradition, the relay will begin with a Survivors Lap, an inspirational and often emotional time when survivors walk the track together in celebration of victories achieved over cancer. Caregivers are also recognized during this time, and will share the track with survivors. At 9:15 p.m., a Luminaria Ceremony will begin. This ceremony is held to remember and honor loved ones lost to cancer. The relay’s Honorary Co-Chairs, who are selected beforehand to serve as representatives for the event, will lead this ceremony by walking the track carrying ‘torches of hope.’ From there, the thousands of luminaries placed around the track will be lit – including a large number of bags spelling out the word “hope” in the bleachers – as the St. Paul’s Bell Choir plays in the background. All the other lights around the track will be turned off. Many people choose to walk the track

in silence at this time in remembrance of their gone-but-not-forgotten friends and family members. The idea behind the Luminaria Ceremony is to offer people an opportunity to grieve within a supportive atmosphere of hope and comfort. The relay’s closing ceremony, which will

start at about 11 p.m., will focus on the efforts of the American Cancer Society, along with members of the local community, to end the battle against cancer through advocacy, awareness-raising, fundraising and research. Throughout the rest of the night, relay team members will take turns walking or running around the track. Every team will have a representative on the track at all times during the relay, while others roam the grounds and take part in games and fun activities going on. “Because cancer never sleeps,” the East Otter Tail County Relay for Life website states, “relays are overnight events.” In truth, they’re more than that, at least in East Otter Tail County. While the relay itself is a one-night affair, the leadup to this main event starts about a week earlier. The weekend before the relay, “Paint the Town Purple” begins. In both Perham and New York Mills, the streets of downtown will be decorated with purple as business and home owners put up ribbons and signs, and storefronts feature all-purple displays. Then, on the Tuesday before the relay, organizers will get together for “Bank Night,” an event that volunteer Ron Anderson calls a sort of “victory celebration.” Funds raised up to that point will

be counted, and organizers will get an idea of whether or not their fundraising goal for the year will be met. On Thursday, July 13, the relay will hold its annual Survivors Banquet, which Anderson describes as “a celebration of survivorship.” The dinner, free for all cancer survivors, usually draws about 140 survivors, plus their spouses, other friends and family members, and some members of the general public. This year’s guest speaker at the dinner will be Janet Karvonen, an ordained pastor and former New York Mills school basketball star. The Survivors Banquet is also when relay organizers announce the winners of their annual awards. This year, Terry and Diane Hepola, of Allegro Marketing of Perham, will be recognized as Employer of the Year for going to extraordinary lengths to support a worker affected by cancer, and community members Bob Wilkowski and Dee Anderson will be recognized for their exceptional work for the American Cancer Society. The relay’s Honorary Co-Chairs will also be announced at the banquet. For more information, visit the East Otter Tail County Relay for Life’s Facebook page, or Google “East Otter Tail County Relay for Life” to find the event’s website through the American Cancer Society.
