Bob Hope once said, “If you watch a game, it is fun. If you play at it, it’s recreation. If you work at it, it’s golf.” There are a lot of opportunities for one to ‘work,’ as the legendary Hope said, in Perham and surrounding lakes area, home to several premier golf destinations that are friendly, and challenging, for golfers of all ages and experience levels. PERHAM The Perham Lakeside Golf Course is located at 2727 450th Street in Perham, and features three nine-hole golf courses: Pine, Oak and Maple. The Maple course plays at a par 37/38, while the Oak and Pine courses are both a par 36. The course features several elevation changes, as well as natural wetlands. Perham Lakeside’s signature hole is the second hole on the Oak course, which is a par 3. Golfers have to carry the water if they want to find the green on this challenging par 3. Perham Lakeside features opportunities for league golfers as well, with men’s nine and 18 hole golf leagues on Tuesdays, while women’s leagues are on Wednesdays. Joe Kauffman is the club manager, while golf superintendent is Jeff Fjosne. Nick Anderson is the head golf professional at Perham Lakeside. GETTING READY FOR THE GOLF SEASON begins with a few early steps JOSEPH KAUFFMAN

Getting ready for the golf season is an important first step and as I thought about that, a few things came to mind. First, is your equipment ready? It’s a good idea to get the clubs out and make sure they didn’t get beat up in storage over the winter. Take a warm wash rag, wash down the grips, get the grime out of the grooves of the clubs, and hopefully you should be good to go. Also take stock of your clubs and how you played last year. Is the new driver that Rory McIlroy is swinging a must have? Is it time to give that Scotty Cameron putter that Adam Scott has been using a try? Were you just not hitting the greens with your iron shots towards the end of the year? Is it time for some new grips? If Jordan Spieth has a Superstroke grip on his putter, you had better get one too. All of these questions arise at this time of year. Second, is your body ready for 18 holes of golf? I’m a huge believer in getting your body stretched out

Toys & Games, Candy, Frozen Yogurt & Popcorn, Baby, Gift Baskets

before playing a full round of golf. I will see guys come into the shop after their first few rounds of 18 holes, and they are beat. Sitting in the ice house for the previous five months, doing 12-ounce curls and pulling up crappie after crappie does not necessarily get the body in shape for swinging as hard as you can for four hours. Your muscles get sore and tired when they aren’t used to a particular activity. So to get ready early in the year, I recommend getting outside and taking 100 easy practice swings several times before you plan to play a full round. Practice your swing, and get loose. This is a great exercise mid-season as well. Even if you take a cart and will be riding all day, it’s still nice to get to the course early, stretch out, and hit a half bucket to get the muscles moving before your round. Making sure your equipment and body are ready for a new season of golf will go a long way in helping you enjoy the sport this summer. Joseph Kauffman is the Golf Manager at Perham Lakeside Golf Course.

MANY OPPORTUNITIES TO RUN IN 2016 JASON GROTH jgroth@perhamfocus.com Running events continue to be a staple of the Perham community and the surrounding lakes area. That trend continues with several events in the Perham area, including the annual Perham Road Racing Series. The Perham Racing Series consists of six different running events in Perham. The Racing Series started with the Freeze Your Face 5K, continues with the Turtle Fest 5K/10K and Half Marathon, the Average Jo Junior and Average Jo Triathlon and the annual United Community Bank Turkey Trot in November. Along with the Perham Racing Series, there are many great opportunities that runners can take advantage of in the lakes area. Perham Living Mature Mile and Family 5K The Perham Living Mature Mile and Family 5K is an event used to promote wellness in the community. It’s inclusive for members of all ages. This year, they have added a toddler race for kids up to four years old to participate in. It features the annual Mature Mile, which is an untimed event for participates that are 60 years and older. The event welcomes all participants, regardless of their fitness level. The Family 5K run/walk is a timed event. The Perham Living Mature Mile and Family 5K takes place on Friday, June 3 at the Perham Living complex. Color Dash 5K Another popular running event that drew more than 700 runners in its first year was the annual Color Dash 5K. The event is a fundraiser for St. Paul’s School in Perham. Fifty percent of the proceeds from merchandise sales and participant registration go to the local charity hosting the event. It’s an untimed event that begins at Arvig Park. Last year’s color dash in Perham raised more than $13,000 for St. Paul’s School. Turtle Fest 5K/10K/Half-Marathon The 21st annual Turtle Fest running event will have an added twist. In year’s past the event was just a 5K event at Arvig Park. However, the Perham Cross Country Boosters have decided to combine two events into one with the Turtle Fest event this year. This year, the annual Perham Harrier Half Marathon will be ran in conjunction with the Turtle Fest 5K. The event will feature the 5K, 10K and now the half marathon. The event takes place on Saturday, June 18 at Arvig Park, with the proceeds from the event going to the Perham Cross Country Team. Average Jo Junior and Average Jo Triathlon The Average Jo Triathlon returns for its 13th running on Saturday, June 24. The event kicks off on Friday with the annual running of the Average Jo Junior event at the Perham Area Community Center. This yearly event combines running, swimming and bicycling all in one. The Average Jo is considered a Sprint Triathlon, which means it is shorter than a full triathlon. The course features a third of a mile swim, a four- mile run and a 12.5 mile bike ride. The sprint triathlon event takes place at Paul Miller Park.

STOP THE SPREAD OF INVASIVE SPECIES DEBBIE IRMEN dirmen@perhamfocus.com Boaters and anglers are reminded as the boating and fishing season starts to help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species. While these species are not everywhere, it will take diligent action to prevent spreading. According to the Department of Natural Resource officers, compliance rates were at 86 percent in 2015, an increase over the previous year when compliance was at 77 percent. Everyone is encouraged to do their part to keep the 95 percent of Minnesota lakes free of invasive species. Because people are more aware of the damage invasive species cause, less than 2 percent of Minnesota lakes are infested with zebra mussels and only about 5 percent are listed as having any type of invasive species. “Minnesotans are doing the right things to help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species, and that is making a big difference in protecting our lakes and rivers,” DNR Commissioner Tom Landwehr said. “This is an ongoing effort, and we need all boaters and anglers to take personal responsibility and do their part.” Over the winter, the Otter Tail County Commissioners hired Spencer McGrew as an AIS specialist to oversee the county’s efforts to prevent the spread of invasive species in its 1048 lakes. Since 2013, the county has taken a proactive approach to stop the spread of AIS such as zebra mussels by establishing a AIS task force.“I’m happy to be on board,” said McGrew, who formerly worked with the Red River Basin Commission in Fargo.

“We have important work ahead of us as a AIS Task Force.” The AIS task force in Otter Tail County is comprised of a diverse group of organizations and individuals and is funded by county taxpayers, county lake associations, state government, grants and other sources. One of the groups taking the lead is the Otter Tail County Coalition of Lake Associations. “We work out details for a public awareness effort,” County Land and Resource director Bill Kalar, “and the task force coordinates efforts with the county board.” Watercraft inspectors are hired annually by the task force and will work closely with McGrew. There are 134 public accesses in Otter Tail County and boat inspections take place from late spring, summer and into the fall at boat accesses. AIS signs put up at these accesses remind boaters to “Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers: Clean, Drain, Dry.” Boaters and anglers are encouraged to maintain their vigilance by following Minnesota’s aquatic invasive species laws: • Clean aquatic plants and prohibited invasive species from watercraft. • Drain lake or river water from all equipment and keep drain plugs out during transport. • Dispose of unwanted bait in the trash, not in the water. Also, lake property owners are reminded that docks and lifts must be allowed to dry for at least 21 days and cleaned before moving them to another body of water. Those who don’t comply face citations, fines, and the possibility of infesting a lake or river.

MINNESOTA YOUTH FISHING REGISTRATION OPEN

Young anglers may participate in a fishing season especially designed for youth this summer. The season concludes with an award ceremony.

The 2016 Youth Fishing seasons dates have been set and registration is open for kids in Minnesota. Young anglers between the ages of 5 and 12 years are eligible to participate in a youth fishing season that starts on July 12. The season concludes on Aug. 13, with a state tournament and awards ceremony on Lake Minnetonka. Anglers may fish on any lake or river in the state on Tuesday nights from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Points will be awarded to kids who show up to fish and for fish that they catch. The format is a catch-and-release, multi-species where anglers earn different point values for different species of fish they catch during the

“game” nights. Throughout the season, the anglers’ points will be tracked on the AAL website. There will be recognition for both teams and individuals in four different age divisions. “We are excited to be implementing a model that replicates other youth sports and gives kids the opportunity to fish as part of a team,” said Kolt Ringer who founded the American Angler League Organization, a 501(c)3 that’s goal is to help communities across the country build and support youth fishing associations. To learn how to participate and more about the American Angler Leagues visit www.fishaal.com.

EARLY SEASON PANFISH

Getting things started

The cold start to April didn’t help the early-season panfishing. The few panfish that ventured into shallow water in late March and early April, retreated to deeper water when the cold spell came. The rest of the panfish that hadn’t made a migration yet, stayed where they were—lingering offshore or outside bays—waiting for the spring warm to actually arrive. By late April, I began to see more panfish in shallow water, but still not high numbers and the ones that were there were extremely close to shore. Fishing early-spring panfish that are only a few feet from shore is not easy. They’re not hard to find, because you can see them, but casting to the fish often spooks them. One thing to know about panfish that enter shallow bays and shorelines early in the spring is that they are not there to spawn—at least not right away. Crappie spawn when the water temps are in the mid-60s and sunfish spawn late in the spring, when the water is 70 degrees. Therefore, the first panfish to enter shallow water in April go there to satisfy a feeding urge—the cycle of life and food begins in warming waters— 12 | SUMMER SCENE MAY 2016

but the fish can be bothered and moody, especially when they are high in the water column (near the surface and visible). They are not guarding beds so they don’t strike out at everything. They don’t chase hard and are typically not assertive or aggressive. Some lakes are more challenging than others. Some have defined bays with dark bottoms and flooded timber (which narrows the search) and can concentrate fish of all sizes. Other lakes are clear and warm slowly and lack good dark bottoms or protected areas—so finding panfish is tricky at best. I pick lakes with stained water and protected bays. I also like lakes that have flooded timber or large areas of bull rushes and have 1,000—5,000 acres of surface area. These larger-class lakes have good populations of both crappie and sunfish and good size variation too. The best ways to fish panfish right after they come to shoreline shallows is to use light bobbers and light-weight lures. (Note: Casting and retrieving small jigs without a bobber to slow it may be too fast.) If you use big bobbers and a gob of

Have you been thrifting lately?

split shots and a lure and bait—you’ll probably scare the fish when the bobber lands. Also, it might be easy to over-cast, in which case you might end up in a tree, power line or dense bull rushes. Try and tone down your approach. Think light. Think sneaky/ stealth. I like to use 1/32-ounce lures with hair—pink and white are always a good bet to begin with. Set the hair jigs (tipped with Gulp fry or live bait), about 1 to 2 feet under your slender bobber. It will be tricky to cast light tackle so it’s beneficial to use a six- to seven-foot fishing pole with new four- to six-pound mono on the reel—the whole thing will cast nicely. If it’s windy and you need to add some weight, just add a little split shot. If possible, try and cast beyond the fish and then pull your lure and bobber over them—it’s a nice quiet approach, and is an easy approach when you’re fishing from the bank. Once the water temps reach the mid and upper 50s along shorelines and in bays, you can relax a bit. While the fish still concentrate along the edges of lakes and bays, they won’t be too close to shore. There will be some forgiveness and room for error. They’ll linger out from shore–over sunken trees, stumps, and along easier terrain like along the edges of reeds and bull rushes. They will be feeding continually and won’t over-react to passing fronts. Also, when the water temps are in the 50s, crappie are getting situated for spawn—call it staging—so they are concentrated and become more aggressive. Enjoy fishing panfish this spring. It’s a great way to get back in the swing of things, and they’re a lot of fun with the right tackle. Good luck. Ross Hagemeister operates Meister Guide Service. Reach him at meisterguideservice.com.

FISHING OUTLOOK from perspective bait shops KELSEE NEWTON knewton@perhamfocus.com Bait shop owners around Otter Tail County get insight on what types of fish are caught and where the fishing hot spots are from anglers. One of the bait shops in Detroit Lakes for the past 16 years has shared some information and learned information on the topic of fish. Quality Bait and Tackle in Detroit Lakes, operated by John and Glenda Store for the past 16 years, shared what anglers have told them about how this fishing season might shape up. Fish season maybe known to most fishermen and anglers to start on May 14, but there are opportunities all year long to go out and catch fish, they said. Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Al Stevens, a fisheries survey and systems consultant, advises anglers to get out early. “”There is no need to wait until the May 14 opener,” he said. “You can already be out fishing for panfish, trout in streams, catfish and a variety of other species.” Different types of bait are often used and anglers may want to consider the type of bait that will catch fish at specific times throughout the summer. David Hull, the owner of Eagles Best, a bait shop and restaurant in Vergas, said fathead minnows and earthworms work well at this time of the season. Glenda hopes people will be patient and allow area lakes warm up a little “to let nature take its course.” Minnesota is known for its 10,000 lakes, but some may not know that in different locations of the state, people may fish before the May 14 opener to catch certain types of fish. “The great thing about fishing in Minnesota is there are opportunities to fish all year, Stevens said, “it depends on your location and the species you want to catch.” In the Detroit Lakes area, “there are a lot of people out pan fishing for crappies, bluegills, pumpkinseed and yellow perch right now” Glenda said. Already, good spots to fish have been located by some anglers this year, including Little Detroit, Lake Melissa and Sauer Lake, Glenda said.

MINNESOTA FISHING FACTS Anglers and waters · There are about 1.4 million licensed anglers in Minnesota. · About 500,000 people are expected to fish on Minnesota’s opening day of the walleye and northern pike season, Saturday, May 14. · Minnesota has 11,842 lakes, 5,400 of which are considered fishing lakes. There are over 18,000 miles of fishable rivers and streams, including 3,800 miles of trout streams. · Average annual expenditure per angler in Minnesota is about $1,500.1 · Although not every kind of fish lives everywhere, 162 species of fish can be found in Minnesota waters.

Participation and the economy · Fishing contributes $2.4 billion to the state’s economy in direct retail sales, ranking Minnesota third in the nation for angler expenditures.1 · Fishing supports nearly 35,500 Minnesota jobs.2 · Minnesota ranks second in resident fishing participation at 32 percent, second only to Alaska.1 Who goes fishing? · Most resident anglers are from urban areas. However, a higher percentage of people living in rural Minnesota fish compared to the percentage of people living in urban areas who fish.1 · Males account for 65 percent of fishing license holders. Females account for 35 percent.

Fishing habits · Significantly more time is spent fishing on lakes than on rivers and streams.1 · The average Minnesota angler spends 15 days fishing each year.1 · Walleye are the most sought-after fish in Minnesota, followed by northern pike and muskie combined, then panfish, bass, crappie and trout.1 1 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation, (U.S. and Minnesota reports) U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. 2 Sportfishing in America, January 2013, produced by Southwick and Associates.
