Fishing for some family fun? Lots of old and new events

BY PAULA QUAM pquam@perhamfocus.com

planned for the 108th annual East Otter Tail County Fair Few things evoke sweet, old-fashioned summertime memories like the county fair. It’s an event that has, for more than a century, captured the crowds at the East Otter Tail County Fairgrounds in Perham. 4 | SUMMER SCENE JULY 2018

This year the fair runs Thursday, July 19 to Sunday, July 22. Although tradition runs deep for the family-friendly event, the fairboard works throughout the year planning and making sure that the old favorites are met with new, fresh aspects. Fairgoers this year will be treated to a few “firsts,” including Polka in the Park Sunday after-

noon. “This will have live music just like you heard in the old days,” says Diane Sazama, fair manager and secretary treasurer of the East Otter Tail County Fair and Agricultural Society. Ironically, as Sazama was booking the act for the fair, she realized Erick’s Dance Band is the same band that played at her own wed-

ding dance 30 years ago. “So that kind of made me feel old,” she laughs, “but I think everybody is just going to love this. If people want to dance, they can dance; if they want to just grab a beer from the beer garden and sit back and relax, they can do that, too.” The band plays a variety of oldies, including country, polka, waltzes and more. The fair will also feature a blacksmith for the first time. Joe Skjaret will be showcasing his art with demonstrations that’ll give people the feeling they’ve momentarily stepped back in time. “And then another thing we’ll try this year is... pig races, which we won’t charge for, but we’ll do a freewill offering,” says Sazama, who says they’ll also have a free will offering at the pancake breakfast on Sunday with funds being used to help with fair costs. There will be a fee for grandstand events, as well, with prices there staying the same as last year. “It’s really affordable for the way our economy is — a really reasonable way for a family to spend the day,” says Sazama. Also new to this fair is its scheduled comedy act, Tricia & The Toonies, who will be at the park shelter Saturday. This family-friendly performance will have kids and adults interacting in the show, as the comedy act features puppets and a whole lot of laughter. “And then the K9 demonstration is new this year, too,” says Sazama, who says the Perham Police Department’s Mike & Ike duo will be on hand to show fairgoers some of their crime fighting tricks. That’ll take place at high noon on Saturday on the baseball field.

In the spirit of public service and first responders, the fair always features some of the area’s finest when it comes to keeping residents safe. This year the Vergas Fire Department will have some if its firefighters and equipment on the scene to showcase what they do. “That’s on Saturday morning, so kids will be able to go into the fire trucks to see what’s in there and talk to a fireman,” says Sazama, who points out that it is the East Otter Tail County Fair, and board members try to do some outreach beyond Perham to include outlying communities. Party animals For anybody who has been to a county fair, it’s no secret that the animals run the show. Like every year, the local 4-H and FFA groups will be ascending upon the fairground barns, show animals in tow. “The barns will be full this year!” says Sazama, who says for the past couple of years, this aspect of the fair has become so popular, it’s actually become a challenge to get all of the animals properly housed in the barns. “But we’ll do our best to make sure everything is safe out there,” she adds, “and as far as the exhibits go, they’ll have a pretty full house there, too.” Sazama explains that while the 4-H and FFA groups have their own impressive entries, there is also something called “open classes.” This is where anybody can bring in their projects and talents for showcasing to be judged. “One of the areas that’s growing here is the homemade wine and beers,” she says,

“and so we just encourage people to bring out their jams and jellies, baked goods, sewing items, jewelry items, quilts, photography, art…” There is no pre-registration for the open category, but entry is Tuesday and Wednesday. “You don’t even need to be from our county,” adds Sazama, who says she loves to see the leadership being built among the youth that participate in the county fair. “Because they’re our future, and it’s cool to see the talent that each of these kids have, and I think it’s an awesome opportunity for some hands-on stuff,” she says, adding that a lot of people don’t often get the opportunity to to be exposed to the agriculture venue or see animals up close like they do at the fair. “At the Children’s Barn they can pet the animals and hold the baby chicks, and I think that experience is really cool for a lot of people,” says Sazama, who worked the barn for several years with her husband. “Some of those kids would come and stay for hours — I’ve had kids fall asleep there,” she laughs. Of course fair attendance varies from year to year, depending on the weather, but Sazama says it always keeps people coming out. “It’s a safe place for people to go,” she says, “but it’s just a nice community event — the time of year when you get to see people out and just visit.” Sazama says they’re always looking for more volunteers to work at the fair; to do that, call her at 218-346-2054. ‘THE IDEA OF

community’

Pie and Ice Cream Social has

BY MARIE JOHNSON For Summer Scene

been bringing people together in Perham for 52 years The annual Pie and Ice Cream Social at Calvary Lutheran Church in Perham is all about community — it’s about the Calvary church community coming together to hold the event, the community of the greater Perham area coming together to take part in it, and, in the end, the local community being rewarded by it. A longstanding summer event, the Pie and Ice Cream Social is now in its 52nd year. Barbeque, pie and ice cream are served for a minimal cost, with all proceeds going back into the community through local nonprofit organizations like Someplace Safe, Celebrate Recovery 8 | SUMMER SCENE JULY 2018

and others. “The money does not stay at Calvary,” says Karen Mathiason, a key organizer of the social. “It goes to very worthwhile organizations that need help, and that help other people.” Every aspect of the social is put together by the men and women of Calvary, with women from the church baking more than 75 pies for the event every year. Mathiason says they usually serve about 400 slices of fresh pumpkin and various berry pies at the social, “and they are scrumptious.” Barbeque plates with chips, a pickle and lemonade are also served. Those plates cost $4.50 each, or it’s $6 for a plate with an extra barbeque. Pie and ice cream is $4, and ice cream only (with fun toppings to pick from) is $1. The social is held on opening night of the East Otter Tail County Fair — Thursday, July 19, from 4-7 p.m. — so Mathi-

ason says some families like to head over to Calvary for dinner after a fun day of rides and animals at the fair. “This past year, quite a few families came,” she says. “We served almost a record number. It was good to see families with children there… It brings a lot of people in from different communities — New York Mills, Ottertail, etcetera.” A Songfest takes place in the church sanctuary during the social, with Calvary choirs and individual singers performing throughout the evening. Mathiason said the whole thing just has a very neighborly, easygoing feel. “I think it’s just the idea of community,” she says. “You may be able to see your friends or neighbors there, or you can bring a friend or neighbor along. It is just a very, very friendly group. We’re a community, and we share that with others.”

Summer Celebration

a shared effort in New York Mills

New York Mills’ annual Summer Celebration is more like three celebrations in one, and each one takes planning and coordination by different community stakeholders.

Lund Boats, for example, is heavily involved in the Lund Mania Fishing Tournament, and the Cultural Center is in charge of the annual Fish House Festival, while the New York Mills Civic & Commerce Association oversees other aspects of the celebration, such as food, music, kids’ activities and the big parade. In the end, it’s a collaboration well worth

the effort — the Summer Celebration is always a fun and family-friendly event that offers a little something for everyone. Taking place this year on Friday, July 6, activities will be ongoing throughout the day and evening at various locations in downtown New York Mills. For more information, visit www.explorenewyorkmills.com.
