turns150! What about playing tourist in your own backyard? Take a look around and you will find plenty of fun activities right here without piling everyone in the car for a long drive and a whole lot of, “Are we there yet?” And this summer, with Otter Tail County celebrating its 150th anniver-

sary, towns all around the county are joining in the fun with activities the whole family can enjoy. Chris Schuelke, executive director of the Otter Tail County Historical Society in Fergus Falls, said there will be historic downtown walking tours throughout various Otter Tail County

communities this summer, as well as other special events taking place in conjunction with regularly scheduled community festivals. Then, in September, the 150th anniversary celebrations will culminate with an original, local theatrical production, “Otter Tail the Musical.” “Otter Tail is a big county, and we felt the walking tours would be a good way to commemorate the history in a handson way, so that people can see the buildings and hear stories and interact with the environment instead of sitting inside and listening to a lecture,” Schuelke

explained. The historic downtown tours will kick off Friday, June 8, in New York Mills, the night before the Great American Think-Off Contest is held there, and Schuelke said the tour will explore the buildings, stories and people from Mills history. The following week, there will be a walking tour of downtown Perham at 7 p.m. “We’ve done this one for several years,” he said. “Perham has retained a number of historic buildings in their downtown, and it’s a great time for

people to learn about building features that they don’t always notice on their daily walk.” He added that as part of the celebration, many communities are taking advantage of micro grants to put on special events linked to local summer celebrations. As part of Turtle Fest, Shirley Davidson from the In Their Own Words Veterans Museum in Perham received a grant to put on an Old-Fashioned Carnival, June 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Arvig parking lot in Perham. The VFW will have a food booth, and activities will include a hula hoop contest, a costume contest, various old-fashioned carnival games with prizes, a magic show and a variety of vendors. For those interested in the more sordid tidbits of Fergus Falls’ past, on the 15th of June a mystery tour will begin at 8 p.m. “We talk about some events that have been hush-hush over the years — some legends, rumors of events and people you may have heard about,” Schuelke said. Other historic walking tours will include: July 6, an exterior tour of the state hospital in Fergus Falls; July 12, downtown Henning; July 20, Pelican Rapids; and July 27, Battle Lake. It’s a good time to get out and learn a little more about your neighboring communities, rack up steps on your Fitbit, and take part in some of the local festivals you’ve always meant to get to but just haven’t quite meandered over to yet. The anniversary fun wraps up September 14-16 with the help of Play Space Productions, a group collaborating with the museum to write an original musical about Otter Tail County. The group has been gathering stories from people in the county and the production will feature local actors and musicians. “We are trying to make people aware of their history and heritage in a fun and creative way, and we feel these events will achieve that,” Schuelke said.

The sculpture park in New York Mills will be one stop along the way during a historic walking tour of the town on June 8. Kim Brasel / Summer Scene

TURTLE FEST 2018 Turtle Races go on every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Turtle Park in downtown Perham. Perham Focus File Photo

BY KIM BRASEL For Summer Scene

Four full days of family-friendly fun Turtle Fest 2018 is just around the corner, and organizers say this year’s event will be another fun, four days filled with familiar tried-and-true events as well as some new offerings for locals and tourists alike. Now in its 34th year, Turtle Fest will run from Wednesday, June 13 to Sunday, June 17 in Perham. Perham’s International Turtle Races — the beloved summer tradition that inspired Turtle Fest — turns 40 this year. Chamber of Commerce President Dan Schroeder said one of the big new Turtle Fest events this year is a carnival, complete with games, rides and a street dance. Shirley Davidson, director of the In Their Own Words Veterans Museum, said the idea for the carnival came out 8 | SUMMER SCENE JUNE 2018

of a meeting for one of this summer’s other major events in the area, Otter Tail County’s 150th Anniversary celebration. “They were looking for each town in the county to come up with an idea to celebrate the anniversary and have it tie in with a local event,” she explained. “I went to the city and asked, ‘What are we doing at Turtle Fest this year?’ and suggested doing a carnival.” The carnival will be on Saturday, June 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Arvig parking lot. Events will include oldfashioned carnival games and prizes, a costume contest, a hula hoop contest, a strolling magician and magic stage show, live music and a bounce house. The VFW will provide food and drinks, a variety of vendors will be on hand, and at noon there will be free cupcakes and juice at the East Otter Tail County History Museum, along with other activities. All proceeds from the carnival will go to the local history museum.

Another fundraiser Davidson put together is a gun raffle for a numbered Henry Big Boy 45LC. The museum is selling 1,000 tickets and the prize is on display at Gene’s Sport Shop in Perham. It is inlaid with gold and has various Otter Tail County landmarks etched into it. Also new to Turtle Fest this year will be a visit by New York Times author William Kent Krueger, who will give a presentation at New Creation Church on Thursday, June 14 at 7 p.m. Perham Librarian Susan Heusser-Ladwig was instrumental in bringing Krueger to town. “She took that project on herself. I think it’s a great example of a community member kicking in to the celebration,” Schroeder said. Other highlights of Turtle Fest will include free trolley rides around Perham, a $10,000 raffle, and a $500 medallion hunt, which starts at noon on Wednesday, June 13. Clues will be released at noon each day until the medallion is

On Thursday will be a Walking Tour of Historic Downtown Perham, one in a series of historic tours taking place throughout the summer as part of the county’s 150th anniversary celebration. Schroeder said the Grand Parade on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. is another popular event. That will be followed by music and fun at Brew Fest at 7:30 p.m. at The Brew. “The parade is always a big hit,” he said. “We have five or six bands that participate… We are hoping the University of Minnesota semi might be back, we have the Highlanders of the North bagpipe group, and the drumming group.” Saturday will kick off with a fireman’s breakfast from 7-11 a.m. and then the allday, city-wide rummage sale will be going on. Schroeder said the city-wide sale is one of the biggest events that goes along with Turtle Fest. Also on Saturday, a half-marathon, 5K and 10K will begin at 7 a.m. at Arvig Park. These annual runs typically draw about 200-300 people and raise funds for the Perham High School Cross Country team. Schroeder said Saturday will have plenty 10 | SUMMER SCENE JUNE 2018

of activities to keep families busy: Perham EMS will host a Safety Zone, there will be a scavenger hunt, a music and arts festival will take place at the Perham Center for the Arts, Project Hope will host a motorcycle ride, and New Creation Church will hold a hog roast. Sunday wraps up with a a breakfast fundraiser hosted by the Perham Rotary. Of course, there are also the popular turtle races. Races start Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in Turtle Park. Schroeder said the Chamber couldn’t put Turtle Fest on without the support of the community and sponsors. “We are so grateful to everyone who steps up to help,” he said. “Without the community, we wouldn’t have a Turtle Fest.”

‘SUCCESS OR FAILURE:

WHICH PLAYS A LARGER ROLE IN SHAPING ONE’S LIFE?’ Great American Think-Off debate coming up June 9 BY KIM BRASEL For Summer Scene

T

he 26th Annual Great American Think-Off will take place Saturday, June 9 in New York Mills, with the four finalists set to debate this year’s question, “Which plays a larger role in shaping one’s life: success or failure?” In addition to the chance to debate the topic, the finalists, who hail from Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Louisiana, each won $500 and an all expenses paid trip to New York Mills that includes a stay at the Whistle Stop Bed and Breakfast. The four finalists are Tonya Abari, Anthony Berryhill, Mark Bland and Rudy San Miguel. Bland and San Miguel will be arguing for success while Abari and Berryhill will argue that failure plays the larger role in a person’s life. Betsy Roder, director of the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center, said they have had people from all 50 states submit essays during the course of the contest, and this year, essays came from four foreign countries: Nigeria, Spain, China and Namibia. Anyone can take part in the contest. There are no geographic or age requirements. Roder believes the youngest final12 | SUMMER SCENE JUNE 2018

ist ever was about 16, and the oldest was in their 80s. Roder, who has been with the Cultural Center since 2011 and director since 2015, feels that keeping the Think-Off going is important, as the event highlights interesting perspectives and ideas and encourages everyone — whether rural or urban — to be open to hearing those ideas. Founder John Davis believed rural America had interesting ideas that needed to be heard, and that’s a big reason why he started the Think-Off, the Cultural Center, and an artist residency program. Originally, the Think-Off was modeled after a boxing match, and contestants had to weigh in and bring a trinket. So how does someone in Texas — or China, for that matter — learn about a philosophy contest in New York Mills, Minnesota? Roder said it is a grassroots effort. The Cultural Center sends posters out all over the country, and relies on media coverage. “We’ve been on C-SPAN, NPR and The Today Show, which has helped, plus word of mouth from past finalists and social media,” Roder explained. The committee tasked with coming up with the questions each year takes input from the community, and ultimately their goal is to come up with something

that is both timely and timeless. In an era when civil discourse seems to have be a thing of the past, some might think choosing a question to debate in public might be tricky. But Roder said the Think-Off shows that it is not. “It’s a great way to showcase that you can still have a civil discussion about a wide variety of topics,” she said. She added that she’s been to quite a few of the debates, and while some may get heated, they have never become uncivil, and she enjoys seeing people continue to discuss the debate topic at the reception held after afterward at the Cultural Center. The debate itself is held in the New York Mills High School auditorium. This year, the finalists will be available to meet the public at a special Kick-Off event on Friday, June 8 at the New York Mills Sculpture Park, beginning at 7 p.m. There will be live music and a walking tour of New York Mills. Roder explained that with so many people coming in for the weekend, organizers thought it would be fun to add an event in town for people to enjoy and showcase some of the historic buildings and unique aspects of New York Mills, such as the sculpture park. For more information on the ThinkOff, the finalists, or the Kick-Off event, visit the Cultural Center’s website at www.kulcher.org or call 218-385-3339.
