▲ Vicki Gerdes / Summerscape This four-foot sailboat, titled “Colorful Breeze,” was designed by artist Shelly Paxton for the “150 Sails Up in DL” public art project, part of the city’s Sesquicentennial celebrations.
On Friday, July 30, continued festivities will feature the Coast Film Festival at the Lake, an event “showcasing creative professionals and amateur filmmakers who have the unique ability to inspire through adventure short films,” according to the event application submitted to the Detroit Lakes City Council in April. The all-day festival will include “a whole evening of short films,
panels with the creators, live music and togetherness,” and there will also be youth activities incorporated throughout the day. In the parking lot next to the bandshell, the Noon Rotary Club will be hosting its Food Truck Fridays event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., so festival-goers can enjoy a variety of tasty treats from local food truck vendors. Activities at the museum
This summer is also the 150th anniversary of the establishment of Becker County’s government, and the local museum is marking the occasion with a new Becker County history book, set to debut as part of the July 29 celebrations. Written by former Detroit Lakes Tribune reporter Pippi Mayfield, the book is intended to be an update on the “Pioneer History of Becker County” book written by Alvin H. Wilcox and published by the museum in 1907. Mayfield will be on hand to sign copies of her book during the festivities. A revamped edition of the Wilcox book will be available for purchase, as well. In addition, a Sesquicentennial exhibit opened at the Becker County Museum on May 27, featuring historic banner displays provided by sponsoring businesses and organizations, as well as a host of memorabilia from the city’s, and county’s, 150-year history. A familybased component of the exhibit will include photo collages contributed by families with a long history in the community. The exhibit will be on display through the end of the year. The Becker County Museum is located at 714 Summit Avenue in Detroit Lakes.
▲ Vicki Gerdes / Tribune A half dozen local food trucks were parked in front of Kent Freeman Arena on Friday, April 30 for the Sailboat Regatta Party, celebrating the “150 Sails Up in DL” public art project. Visit them all! More food truck festivals are planned this summer in Detroit Lakes, including both Trucks & Tunes and Food Truck Fridays, which take place in the City Park.

LAND & LAKES
Things to do on land GO HIKING From trails to parks to city sidewalks, there’s a plethora of places to put your foot down in the Lakes Area. Read on to learn about several of the best.
Dunton Locks County Park This 53-acre park (pictured) just south of Detroit Lakes has nearly 4 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails on the hills along the shores between Lake Sallie and Muskrat Lake. The northern trails wind through hardwood forested hills that were once a gathering spot for Sioux Indians, and remnants of Indian burial mounds are still present throughout the park. The southern trails also wind through rolling, wooded terrain.
Mountain View Recreation Area The 3 miles of natural surface trails at Becker County’s Mountain View Recreation Area wind their way through a mature, mixed hardwood forest. The trails are wide and offer several different loop options. The trails are used for
horseback riding as well as hiking in the summer, and crosscountry skiing in the winter. Separate single-track mountain bike/snowshoe trails are also being developed. Parking for 10-15 vehicles is located along Tower Road in Detroit Lakes. SUMMERSCAPE | 13

North Country National Scenic Trail
Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge
Spanning seven states and over 4,600 miles, the North Country Hiking Trail is the longest hiking path in the United States. The trail through Becker County runs 62 miles from Itasca State Park to the Becker County-Otter Tail County line near Frazee. Suggested hikes on the trail include: • North from the Highway 34 Trailhead (located two miles east of Becker County Road 29), out-and-back: Hike as far as you want then return. You will cross through prairie fields and see wetlands. • South from Highway 113 Trailhead in the White Earth State Forest, out-and-back: Hike through a white pine plantation then return. • Highway 113 to CR-39 Trailhead, 4.3 miles: Hike through a mix of hardwoods and pine plantations and over some hilly terrain. Part of this hike is along the Laurentian (Continental) Divide.
The North Country Trail also runs through the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, a quiet and pristine place for outdoor play. Access the trail from 400th Avenue, Blackbird Wildlife Drive or the Pine Lake Parking Area on County Highway 29. In addition to the North Country Trail, Tamarac offers several miles of other hiking trails. Park at the Discovery Center and take the 1/4-mile Discovery Loop, or the 1.5-mile Bear Paw Trail, which goes to historic cabins. On the Old Indian Hiking Trail, follow in the footsteps of the Ojibwe people and experience the beauty of the maple basswood forest. This 2.4-mile loop trail is accessed from County Highway 29. For more information, visit fws.gov/refuge/Tamarac/.
Greater Sucker Creek
This gem boasts 117 acres of natural woods and prairie with accessible paved paths, unimproved trails, marshwalks, a designated trout stream, amphitheater and interpretive signs. The park is located on the southeast side of Detroit Lakes, just off U.S. Highway 10.

As for mountain biking, Detroit Mountain Recreation Area (pictured below) is the easiest and closest trail system, with downhill trails and cross-country bike trails as well as a progressive skills loop trail. Contact the club by visiting the Woods and Wheels ATV Club Facebook page or woodsandwheelsatvclub.com. Trail maps are also available at the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce office.

GO SWIMMING, FISHING, BOATING The most popular public place to take a dip in the area is Detroit Lakes’ mile-long, sandy City Beach (pictured on facing page, top right). It’s open to everyone, but dogs and alcohol are not allowed. The space is quick to fill with people in the summers, usually being the busiest during the hottest hours of the day. Tanning and swimming are always popular here, and boat rentals are available right on the beach, at J&K Marina, or a few miles east at the Holiday Inn Marina. A number of restaurants are just across the street from the beach, and food trucks and the Ice Cream Truck regularly visit the neighboring City Park. 26 | SUMMERSCAPE
Other public beaches in the area can be found at Middle Cormorant Lake, Eagle Lake, Town Lake, Wolf Lake and in Osage, Frazee, Vergas and Ottertail. Perham has a swimming beach at Paul Miller Park, north of town. Visit the Becker County Parks and Recreation website, or Otter Tail County website, for more information on these. In addition, fishing is popular year-round here, whether it be from piers, boats, shorelines or fish houses. There are dozens of public water accesses across both Becker and Otter Tail counties; visit the county websites for maps and more information.

GO TUBING DOWN THE OTTER TAIL RIVER Charlie’s Tubing and K&K Tubing, located right next to each other on Highway 34 in Detroit Lakes, both offer rides down the Otter Tail River. Tubes -- for riders, dogs and coolers -- as well as parking and rides to the river entrance, are provided by both businesses. Rides down the river are about 2 hours long straight through, but many tubers like to stop at the popular sandbar along the way. Water shoes are recommended for first-time tubers. You’ll also need to know how many drinks you have, and they need to be in aluminum cans. If you want to beat the crowds, go early or later in the afternoon, as prime time tends to be around 2 p.m.

SPOTLIGHT CELEBRATION: PERHAM’S TURTLE FEST
Go, go, go to Perham this summer Don’t miss the town’s beloved Turtle Races and Turtle fest BY ELIZABETH VIERKANT | FOR SUMMERSCAPE
E
very summer for over 40 years, Perham’s International Turtle Races have attracted a crowd of people who come from all over the world. Held each Wednesday throughout the summer at Turtle Race Park, located next to the Perham Area Chamber at 185 East Main Street, the turtle races are a beloved tradition in this tiny Minnesota town, and are the backbone of the community’s big multi-day summer event, Turtle Fest.
30 | SUMMERSCAPE
The events were scaled-back and otherwise impacted by the pandemic last summer, but are coming back in full force this year, with races every Wednesday from June 2 to August 25, and Turtle Fest scheduled for June 16-20. People can register for the races starting at 10 a.m., and the races begin at 10:30. Everyone participating gathers in the park’s center circle and, with the blow of a whistle, lets the turtles loose. The first turtle to get to the outside ring wins.
SPOTLIGHT CELEBRATION: PERHAM’S TURTLE FEST The winners race again, until the top three are decided. Turtles are provided at the races, and anyone of any age can participate. A $2 donation is requested, with all proceeds going toward future races. The one exception to the races-onWednesdays rule happens during Turtle Fest, when there’s an extra race on a Friday. Other Turtle Fest activities include: trolley rides and a parade on Friday; 5k, 10k and half marathon runs on Saturday, along with a pancake feed and a visit from some zoo animals that day; a medallion hunt throughout the week, with a $500 prize; a craft fair with food vendors on Friday and Saturday; and more. Perham Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Dan Schroeder says the best part of Turtle Fest is that it’s all community-organized. According to him, it’s something the community puts on to say, “Thank you for doing business in Perham!” A full schedule for Turtle Fest and other information can be found at perham.com/turtlefest/.

SPOTLIGHT CELEBRATION: THE NORTHWEST WATER CARNIVAL
A wet and wild wingding
The 2021 Northwest Water Carnival BY DETROIT LAKES NEWS TRIBUNE STAFF FOR SUMMERSCAPE
D
etroit Lakes’ ultimate summer celebration, the multi-day Northwest Water Carnival, will be making waves again this summer after getting being dampened by COVID-19 crowd restrictions last year. The 2021 carnival is set to take place July 9-18. As usual, the event will be a celebration of all things wet and wonderful, with water fights, a sand dig and sand castle concert, pup plunge, inner tube races, water balloon games, tug-o-war on the beach and much more.
▲ Publicity Photo Clay Walker will be the Saturday night headliner at this year’s Bash on the Beach. The Bash was still tentative at press time.

SPOTLIGHT CELEBRATION: THE NORTHWEST WATER CARNIVAL
▲ Detroit Lakes Tribune file photo The carnival’s Parade of the Northwest always makes a splash. Bring your water cannons and squirt guns to join in the fun — just be respectful and leave the floats with ‘No Spraying’ signs alone.
Annette Korth, a leading organizer, previously told the Detroit Lakes Tribune that, “We’re super excited to bring it back. This was only the second time in 86 years when we didn’t have a Water Carnival. It’s a staple to our community.” The 2021 carnival will be the 85th one in Detroit Lakes’ history. The longstanding event is put on by the local Jaycees club, which Korth is a member of. Korth and another Jaycee, Mandie Tretbar, are this year’s Water Carnival Admirals, meaning they’re the primary people in charge. A wide range of events are on the
schedule for this year’s carnival, which is essentially a holdover of last year’s event schedule. All the smaller group activities that are traditionally part of the carnival — like the pageants, kids’ games and inflatables, and everything already listed above — will for sure take place, Korth said. Larger group events, like the kickoff party on West Lake Drive and the Bash on the Beach lakeside concert, were still tentative at press time, with the hope that state restrictions on group gatherings would be loosened or lifted by then. A final decision about those larger events -whether to have them or not, and what if any restrictions might be in place -- was expected to be made by June 1. The demo derby remained tentative yet, as well, Korth added -- but the big Parade of the Northwest was a definite “go.” Headliners for
the still-tentative Bash on the Beach two-night outdoor concert are Terri Clark and Slamabama on Friday night and Clay Walker on Saturday night. Tickets and additional information about the Water Carnival, including a full schedule of events, is available online at dljaycees.com.

TRY AND GET AN EAGLE No, not the sharp-beaked kind — we don’t recommend that — rather, the golf kind.
