PLANNING FOR LONG-TERM GROWTH AND CHANGE Often the first step in our services for healthcare clients is development of a flexible framework that will guide long-term growth and change. Campus masterplanning needs to recognize short- and long-term objectives. The common ground of

both must be to create a robust, high-technology platform that can support complex diagnostic and treatment functions that change as needed. An integrated plan also needs to recognize its cultural and environmental setting so the overall impact is
greater than the sum of its parts. The design that emerges from the planning process enriches our clients’ development and growth strategies.

TRANSFORMATION TO THE NEXTGENERATION ACADEMIC MEDICAL CENTER The academic medical center is fundamentally based on four interacting components— research, education, clinical care, and wellness and prevention. As the engine for innovation and advancement of clinical protocols, their ultimate objective is to
cure and prevent disease. The healthcare networks they control benefit from the development of opportunities to collaborate and coordinate and thereby offer cohesive levels of care throughout the system.

Committed to providing community hospitals with expertise tailored to their needs.
PATIENT-CENTERED CARE AT COMMUNITY MEDICAL CENTERS Community hospitals provide essential primary and secondary care that is accessible to patients and their families and responsive to the cultural base of their communities. The best new
facilities are easy to access and navigate and provide services and amenities for families and staff—similar to a small village. They are equipped with diagnostic and treatment facilities that
support the latest modalities and protocols and are designed to be the introduction to the medical system when healthcare services are required.

Personalized cancer care helps patients transcend clinical treatments, connecting them to a community and providing for their needs as people.
ADVANCES IN CANCER CARE Perkins Eastman has designed more than 40 major cancer treatment facilities in the United States and around the world. Cancer treatment usually involves many clinical visits, and the facilities must respond to the very unique and personal needs of each patient. As cancer 1

increasingly becomes a chronic disease treated in an outpatient setting, buildings need to be designed to engage with the life of each patient and their caregivers. Cancer facilities must also reflect the science behind today’s quickly developing research. Translational
cancer centers produce rapid advances in treatment including new drugs, viral delivery methods, and genetic protocols. Facilities that synthesize new treatment options from their latest research are at the forefront of cancer care.

YEARS OF INNOVATION AT MEMORIAL SLOAN KETTERING CANCER CENTER
SINCE 1993 Perkins Eastman has been privileged to be the architect for more than 20 projects at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), including four groundbreaking outpatient facilities. We are proud to be associated with an institution as renowned for research as for patient care. Over the course of our collaboration we have assisted them in remaking their New York City clinical platform, enabling them to carry out their patient-first mission. The transformation began with the Rockefeller Outpatient Pavilion, which

upon its opening in 1997 established a new paradigm for ambulatory cancer care. For the next two decades we were engaged to develop numerous critical projects that developed their inpatient and outpatient capabilities. These projects include the International Center, Special Inpatient Suites, New Surgical Platform, and several other inpatient facilities. In 2010 the standalone Evelyn H. Lauder Breast and Imaging Center opened, once again creating a new paradigm. We are currently involved in the final construction stages of the Josie Robertson Surgery
Center, which will incorporate the latest advancements of outpatient surgery for gynecological and prostate cancers. Our latest groundbreaking project with MSKCC is the David H. Koch Center for Cancer Care. The project includes 750,000 sf of clinical space for the most acute cancer patients. Its second phase is a healthcare educational facility for Hunter College, in association with Ennead Architects. Its completion in 2019 will mark more than a quarter-century of Perkins Eastman’s work for this transformative healthcare institution.

DELIVERING ADVANCED CARE IN AN AMBULATORY SETTING Ambulatory clinics have become an increasingly central part of the healthcare delivery system. These are the high-technology patient care delivery platforms of our time and will be for the foreseeable future. To plan for the growing importance of this typology, clients and architects must work together to design sustainable, flexible projects that address
both the technological and the human elements. Increasingly, they incorporate tertiary care specialties. Because much of our practice is focused on the complex urban environments on the east and west coasts of the United States, these buildings represent a high proportion of our work.

HEALING ENVIRONMENTS FOR CHILDREN Pediatric hospitals must accommodate the unique requirements of this important population. The complexities of the developmental care required for this medically fragile population require in turn a fully responsive, sensory-sensitive hospital environment. The interior
design needs to be appealing, comforting, and clear to children and their parents, who are already in a state of alarm. In addition to acute care facilities, Perkins Eastman has also designed facilities to accommodate longterm supportive care for special needs children. 27

HIGHLY FOCUSED SPECIALTY ENVIRONMENTS Facilities for specialty treatment centers must be sensitive to medically nuanced programs and fulfill the specific needs of their medical staff and unique patients. From students looking to better understand their own health, to patients getting treatment for rare or less understood diseases, the design of these facilities often
3
relies on technical know-how and understanding of planning requirements that go beyond the usual healthcare programs. To better service these clients, Perkins Eastman has developed collaborative relationships with strategic partners who understand the particularly unique needs of these environments.

MODERN CLINICAL ENVIRONMENTS IN INTERNATIONAL SETTINGS Designing international facilities requires an understanding of local culture, climate, codes, and construction technology. Building projects across diverse global settings means there is no one template that works for every client. Some projects demand cutting-edge, world-class facilities, while other solutions must be adapted for the local marketplace’s healthcare
30
capabilities and construction practices. For those projects, striking a delicate balance between a desire for the latest technologies and the local economy is key. Sometimes we design new institutions where the clinical team is not yet in place. In this case we must advocate for the needs of the future clinical team and their patients.
