OUR PRIMARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION PR AC TICE has been creating beautiful and
innovative educational spaces that shape the way students discern, absorb, and retain knowledge for more than three decades. COLLABORATION is fundamental to our practice. Like the families and communities that we work for and with, our team sees education as the key to a better future. From early strategic planning through programming and design to construction administration and post-construction services, we believe that the quality of the environment can support and enhance learning. We also believe that it builds stronger communities. Our passion for research, planning, and design is complemented by our belief in collaboration and engagement. From the very beginning of a project, we engage all of the stakeholders in a process of creative analysis that identifies all of the key issues early on, enabling us to create designs that are uniquely tailored to your vision, mission, program, budget, time, and place. In the following pages, we illustrate how our process can help you enhance learning, explore new ideas, build community, blur boundaries—and even help save the world.

Our approach can help ensure that your entire campus is designed to support education.
SUPPORTING STUDENT SUCCESS
1
By any measure, the environment is a critical factor in ensuring student success. From acoustics, daylighting, and thermal comfort to furniture specification, technology integration, and space allocation, our researchbased approach enables us
10
to unify all of these disparate but complementary systems to create integrated, supportive, high-performance learning environments. By controlling these environmental factors we can help ensure that every child has an appropriate place to learn
and that they can reach their full potential. And because learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door, our approach considers every square foot of a building and its campus. We believe every space must be designed to enhance education.

Tapping our experience with schools around the world, we can help you create a 21st-century learning environment.
21 ST-CENTURY LEARNING Never in history has there been a more exciting time in education. New ideas in pedagogy, curricula, and technology continue to inspire innovative ideas about places to learn. Drawing inspiration from our clients and by collaborating broadly with teachers and students in schools around the world, we continue to explore and define the 21st-century

learning environment. From the evolution of the library into the “learning commons” to the combination of wellness, language, and culture lessons in a new food lab and garden to collaborative, student-centered, project-based classrooms with no “front”—learning has transcended conventional boundaries of time and place.

BUILD COMMUNITY
Dunbar Senior High School Washington, DC, USA
17
Our architecture encourages interaction and engagement, building strong learning, professional, and neighboring communities that come together to support the student.
SCHOOL AS COMMUNITY We believe in the “school as community. Our designs foster strong learning communities of students and teachers, collaborative professional communities of teachers and staff, and cohesive communities of families and neighbors. Using adjacency and transparency we can organize the environment to foster strong and proactive relationships within the school. Through innovative programming
18
we can provide for a host of complementary community needs ranging from parent resource centers to health and childcare. Likewise, with careful programming and zoning and security measures, we can enable active and joint use of the facilities by the school and the community without disruption to the academic program, truly transforming the school into a center of its community.

SUSTAINABLE AND HIGH PERFORMANCE

Our increasingly fast-paced, flat, interrelated world will present many challenges for our children. Chief among them is our ongoing impact on the environment. In extraordinary circumstances, our schools need to be resilient, safe havens for the community.
4
In our children’s daily experience, our schools can become positive agents of change by providing healthy and safe places to learn, conserving resources, and inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards. We can help teachers and students
understand their building’s energy performance to connect sustainability in the abstract— their “footprint”—to real—world examples–for instance, reducing plug loads, recycling concepts, and composting.

Schools today are becoming a nexus of lifelong learning. From early childhood education to early college programs, the term “K-12” no longer accurately describes the opportunities provided by many of our schools; before-and after-school programming is extending the school day and is often engaging adult learners, too. To design for this broader range of
user, we take inspiration and learn from our other practice areas— tapping applicable innovations, for example, from designs for higher education and collaborative workplace environments. Increasingly, we are crossing conventional boundaries with public-private partnerships to create innovative new ways to deliver great places to learn.
