PERKINS E AS TMAN’S TR ANSPORTATION & INFR AS TRUC TURE PR AC TICE embraces the

technical complexity and civic potential of urban infrastructure at all scales of the city. We design facilities for all modes of transportation—from intercity and commuter rail to buses, from light rail stations to subway, and from waterfront promenades to parking facilities. Our work ranges from reimagining the future of a single street to the planning and designing for the entire transformation of an urban network. We apply what we have learned in creating places that have stood the test of time to help communities plan for a more resilient future.

5

COLLABORATION is fundamental to our practice. We recognize that close working relationships with our clients is critical to our design process and success. At each step, the emphasis is on building consensus, ensuring that key issues are resolved and agreement is reached before proceeding to the next stage. This approach has enabled us to: develop a high level of sensitivity to the requirements of both agencies and developers; reconcile often disparate perspectives to develop solutions unique to the situation; and obtain difficult approvals in the most challenging of contexts.

Emphasizing the civic aspect of urban infrastructure We recognize the potential of transit to create compelling places of arrival that become the focus of civic life. Our approach emphasizes the civic aspect of

urban infrastructure, building the public realm, and a sense of scale in the environment that welcomes both passengers and pedestrians. The most successful

examples not only create value for surrounding property owners and transit agencies but for the larger community, as well.

LEVERAGING TRANSIT TO CREATE LASTING VALUE

Joint development and public-private partnerships We design facilities that integrate with, and enhance, what’s around them. This approach has helped our clients leverage the value of their infrastructure investments while producing a superior experience for passengers and passersby.

Successful transit-oriented development is ultimately a collaborative effort that requires the participation of a variety of players. Our diverse portfolio has provided us with an understanding of the needs of municipalities, transit agencies, and developers alike. This work has taught us

that functionality, station access, and maximizing development opportunities can be addressed together to create a greater whole. We bring these skills to the complex problems presented by joint development, air-rights development, and large-scale designs for transit-oriented communities.

Accommodating the complex operational issues of contemporary urban infrastructure Perkins Eastman has designed facilities for all modes of transportation, from intercity and commuter rail, light rail, and buses to

automobiles, bikes, and walking. We know how to accommodate the complex operational issues of intermodal and multimodal

facilities without losing sight of their inherent significance as both gateways and civic buildings.

Integrating public infrastructure into the larger context Public infrastructure, from headhouses to light rail stations and levees to vent shafts, works best when integrated into the fabric of the community. Integrating transit facilities into the surrounding city

fabric is not only key to increasing transit ridership but also the longterm value of both transit agency properties and those around them. Weaving the infrastructure needed to protect our cities from

the threats posed by a changing climate into the public realm can make for a more resilient community—and one that is healthier and more prosperous, as well.

and new and innovative types of public environments. This experience has taught us that the success of urban infrastructure relies on more than a single functional purpose—for example,

getting people from station to station. The best examples take into account how people get to, and through, these facilities, and make what is around them better.

PROCESS Our process is critical to our success. Our approach is to first interpret what we see and learn, rather than to just record and map. We look at each element—such as access, street patterns, development sites, and views—separately in order to see them in a different way and only then bring them together in a design that captures the unique qualities and characteristics of the place.
