is comprised of a diverse team of experienced, talented, and passionate professionals who provide a thoughtful and humanistic approach to programming, design, and interior architecture. One of our particular areas of expertise is creating the kinds of spaces that truly support workplace strategies — ones that improve collaboration and flexibility, support new ways of working, and incorporate health, wellness, and sustainability. These are driving factors in every design we create.

5

COLLABORATION is fundamental to our practice. At Perkins Eastman, our team—your team—is not only comprised of the staff specially assembled to work on your project; the team also draws on the skills and expertise of our practice area diversity. This is how we’ve come to be deeply experienced in all aspects of workplace design, including organizational change, cultural realignment, and brand integration. We rigorously research your culture, work processes, and vision to craft a design solution that meets your unique needs and exceeds your expectations.

THE EVOLVING OFFICE Design is about many things, but above all, it is about people. Shaped by the energy and activity occurring within—by those who work, learn, explore, and create there—each project has the potential to radically enhance people’s lives, both personally and professionally.

The two drivers most dramatically changing today’s workplace are the rapid advancement of technology and the influx of a new generation of workers. This has changed how collaboration occurs; it has moved beyond gathering in a conference room to meeting virtually, thus generating solutions using a new way of thinking. No single workplace trend provides the right solution for the majority of the clients we serve. As such there are organizations

that require a traditional office environment to function optimally, while others have embraced the virtual workplace. Perkins Eastman’s project design and management teams are diverse in expertise; they prominently include organizational psychologists and workplace strategists who leverage the thought leadership of our education, healthcare, and hospitality experts.

WORKPLACE STRATEGIES

Just as no two organizations are identical, no two workplace solutions are alike. Each have unique characteristics that drive culture, behavior, and performance. Ten years ago, a typical client engagement process consisted exclusively of basic programming

With the rapid advance of technology, the influx of a new generation of employees in the workplace, and the need

to do more with less and drive productivity, Perkins Eastman moved with purpose to develop our Workplace Strategies team to engage our clients earlier in the process and at a comprehensive level. While developing program metrics and real estate needs, the Strategies team is able to address

a wide variety of client needs

— from business realignment to help heal cultural divides to reengineering the workplace in order to shorten development cycles and speed-to-market to educating staff throughout a corporate consolidation or relocation. 11

FLEXIBILITY

Creating spaces that bring people and new ideas together. “The agile office” is at the heart of many of our current design strategies. Whether it involves the creation of a mobile/flex worker environment or planning multi-

12

functional modular workplaces that can serve dual functions, our clients recognize that flexibility is currency in today’s global marketplace. The ability to adapt

to change and deploy teams quickly in diverse settings is a mark of an engaged leadership team and a key driver of business success.

If a space can be imagined, a workplace design solution exists that can make it a reality.

Work now occurs in multiple locations, at various times of the day, both in and out of the office— and this trend is only going to grow. This provides staff with the ability to work anywhere. A portion of an organization’s team may work in the office to collaborate

with coworkers on a specific project, while simultaneously others will leverage technology away from the office to interface with colleagues and produce work. By balancing “face time” with technology and clear project deliverables, today’s organizations

can reshape how they deliver excellence to their clients. This also allows an organization to reduce its physical footprint to achieve significant cost savings.

SUPPORTING NEW WAYS OF WORKING The modern workplace is a complex environment comprised of various overlapping elements to help support an ever-changing workforce. Individual work environments are unique to some degree in their design in order to best support their products, processes, and services. But each industry—from financial to consumer product to insurance to pharmaceutical to law—shares attributes in common with others; certainly they all face pressures to meet financial targets, recruit and retain key

staff, lower real estate costs, and provide current technology to stay ahead of the competition. Not only do our clients confer with each other about their work environments, but they also are well-informed about how the workplace can help them achieve their goals. Perkins Eastman is a leader in creating sustainable work environments tailored to

each client’s vision and goals. From working with a start-up to an established Fortune 500 company, our creative teams are constantly evolving and shaping new ideas, integrating solutions, and measuring the results in order to evolve with our clients and provide innovative design solutions.

BRAND INTEGRATION A well-designed workplace is an important tool that will enable your business to perform at its best while it communicates, celebrates, and reinforces your business objectives and brand goals.

Integrating brand messaging into the workplace brings value in several ways—among them, increased employee retention and recruitment, improved morale and productivity, and better positioning with clients and visitors.

Our team conducts thorough research, including visioning sessions, stakeholder interviews, and workshops to identify a client’s unique brand characteristics. We then craft those characteristics into meaningful brand expressions for the workplace.

Market and consumer realities are constantly changing and reshaping the broadcast, media, and entertainment industry. Technology, equipment, talent, and content production are thus evolving everyday, new businesses are emerging constantly, and new competition is rising up in the industry from multiple areas. Perkins Eastman and our broadcast media, and entertainment design team are playing an important role in the development of this industry. The team has many years of in-depth experience in designing for every type of space. It is not just that we understand the business; we know how it operates, what makes it work, how content and production workflow progress. Ultimately, we know what it takes to design world-class broadcast and media

24

facilities around the globe. Effectively designing for this industry comes only through thorough knowledge and deep understanding of how media is produced, edited, broadcast, repurposed, distributed, and consumed, and it requires a knowledge of technology, branding, acoustics, workplace environment, broadcast workflow, and highly specific performance standards.

With the constant growth and convergence of these industries worldwide, our design expertise and services apply globally to television, radio, film, music recording, post-production, theaters, and print media alike.

25

MUSIC RECORDING, RADIO, AND POST-PRODUCTION Media can be electronic, news, broadcast, digital, mass, recording, or social. It is produced in or broadcast from spaces that range from a basic office to sophisticated studios and technology-laden control and postproduction rooms.

Most video production content has an audio component that requires a different type of space with specific functional and acoustical requirements. With each client, Perkins Eastman discusses the level of expectation and performance required for

1

26

each space and then translates this information into a design concept. These spaces require careful consideration and elegant resolution to the utmost detail; the complexity of the technology equipment and performance needs require perfect execution

2

of these many moving parts. The design for these spaces must function as seamlessly and unobtrusively as possible in the background of the video production and broadcast work.

TELEVISION, FILM, AND SET DESIGN Designing for television, film, and on-air sets brings together every aspect of media; it involves technology, acoustics, audio and video, editing, mixing, production, set fabrication, lighting, and broadcasting live, on-air events. This brings together the highest number of design requirements of any project. For television and

28

film, our team designs studios and support spaces, redundant power and cooling for infrastructure, integration of broadcast and media systems and equipment, satellite dish farms for up-and-down link ingest, and most important, future-proofing each facility to accommodate growth without affecting existing functions.

In order to design and build for television and film, the design team must effectively manage and coordinate a large number of consultants. Keeping the project organized and on-track is critical, as almost all have an on-air date or other time restriction that cannot adjust.
