Chair, Perth International Arts Festival

PREMIER OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA

The Right Honourable the Lord Mayor

Vice-Chancellor, The University of Western Australia

Jonathan Holloway has made a major impact on Festival life, not only in Perth, but around Australia, where, judging by the interest of the national media and of people in the arts and the community more broadly, he has really put the Perth International Arts Festival on the map. If you haven’t experienced one of his Festivals, this is the time to take the plunge. He has created a great and varied program targeted to all ages and to a full range of tastes. So, block out three weeks in February and revel in some great arts and cultural experiences that will transform the life of our city.

The Perth Festival is a chance for our community to immerse themselves in a shared celebration of our city’s vibrancy and creativity, and to reflect on the contribution our arts and cultural sector makes to Western Australia.

Perth is increasingly in the spotlight as a dynamic, global and highly liveable city. Our ever-evolving skyline is a reminder of the city’s progress, however Perth’s transformation extends deeper than that. As we look beyond the physical changes we witness the effect arts and cultural initiatives have on our community. Every year it is resoundingly evident that Festival season brings this city alive.

With summer comes the blossoming of our city as it opens up to embrace that vivid mix of the popular, the serious and the surprising that is the Perth International Arts Festival.

The State Government is proud to support a range of events at this year’s Festival, through Lotterywest, Eventscorp, the Department of Culture and the Arts and the Department of Education. A number of outstanding free and affordable events are amongst the highlights of the Festival – including the Lotterywest Festival Spectacular, a mesmerising family event from masters of public theatre, Spanish group Xarxa Teatre, supported by Eventscorp. Once again, the Vital Stages program will tell Western Australian stories in unique and innovative ways, and ensure that the voices of local artists are well represented at the Festival. The Perth Festival offers a unique opportunity to appreciate our city in new ways and explore what it means to be Western Australian – I hope that locals and visitors alike enjoy this year’s program.

The Perth International Arts Festival must be congratulated for creating a truly world-class Festival. In 2014 the Festival will yet again demonstrate the diversity, momentum and power of the arts. The Festival’s exceptional program is full of alluring and challenging events. We will be encouraged to analyse, learn and consider our world from fresh new perspectives. We eagerly await this joyous celebration of local and international art and culture. The City of Perth is proud to continue its loyal association and long term support of this Festival. I hope you will all join me in some late, but oh so worthwhile, nights out and look forward to seeing you there.

A successful festival offers an intense and crowded program, combining entertaining and challenging performances which attract new patrons to the arts, while encouraging the existing audience to push its viewing boundaries. The Perth Festival achieves these goals brilliantly with its outstanding selection of the best arts events the world can offer. At The University of Western Australia we share this quest for international excellence, and are proud of our ongoing, close relationship with the Festival we founded over sixty years ago. We celebrate the achievements of our Festival and the benefits it has brought to our State since its humble beginnings at UWA. It is our pleasure to invite you on campus to share the Perth Writers Festival, the Lotterywest Festival Films and selected special events from this exceptional feast.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Welcome In a world rich with festivals, in a country full of creativity and a city packed with potential we must never lose sight of the big questions: why this Festival … why here … why now? Festivals are the world turned upside down, the mirror held up to our society; they are what allow us to be who we are for the rest of the year, in the knowledge that we will be elevated out of our day to day thinking for three weeks every glorious summer. No two Festivals should ever be the same, and so our challenge each year is to re-invent ourselves, to curate ideas afresh and allow us all to see our world in a new light. It is in this spirit that I’m delighted to welcome you to this year’s Festival. It is the largest we’ve ever presented thanks to the unprecedented and overwhelming support of so many – our key funders and supporters, our sponsors, our benefactors and of course you, our audience.

It is also the most international in terms of the origin of our artists and the stories they are telling. Most importantly, though, this Festival is more connected to Perth than ever. The international and interstate artists we have invited will help us experience our beautiful land with re-awakened senses, collaborating with massive numbers of artists from Western Australia. Whilst the performances, artworks, films and writings have originated from so many points on the world map, what we will experience together in February will be a Festival in and of Perth. And so we give you the 2014 Perth Festival. Cherish it and enjoy it. It’s yours. Jonathan Holloway

Out of the ordinary: Right here right now This summer, you are invited to dive into the greatest collection of international artistic experiences Perth has ever known.

Here, the unexpected abounds in our alleyways, theatres, concert halls, galleries, parks and gardens and we invite you to become an active participant in the extraordinary.

Over 600 of the world’s great artists are set to arrive in Western Australia to entertain, excite, challenge and tantalise us, and they may just change the way we look at our cultural life and our city forever.

Perth International Arts Festival is the longest running annual multi-arts celebration in the Southern Hemisphere and the jewel in the crown of Western Australia’s cultural life. The artists you will see in this year’s Festival aim to transform the way we look at and participate in art with the hope that it will bring our views of the world into sharp focus, while offering exciting and unexpected experiences along the way. In this second year of partnership with Chevron Australia, transformation is our aim and international excellence is the frame through which we look to make and experience amazing art.

In this, Perth’s 62nd International Arts Festival, spectacular works that light up the night sky for thousands are counterpointed by intimate experiences for one person at a time. Classic works of Shakespeare are reimagined, while our perceptions of circus, dance, classical music and theatre are exploded by deft musings and beautiful imaginings from exceptional artists at the top of their game.

Get ready to dive in.

Digital Arts: The Festival in a brave new world In 1953 perth Festival screened world cinema premieres under the Western Australian stars for the first time, and we’ve been breaking new ground ever since. In 1988 we presented the legendary experience of Peter Brook’s epic The Mahabharata. In 2002 we invited Antony Gormley to create 51 striking steel figures and placed them across seven square kilometres of salt expanse in Lake Ballard. In 2012 we invited 30,000 people to dance with angels in a joyous blizzard of feathers outside Council House.

We make the extraordinary possible, on platforms and in territories not usually seen as artistic spaces. Over 61 years the Festival has contributed profoundly to the cultural life of Western Australia, and now we embark on the next stage and platform for your engagement with art: the world of digital. Running through every strand of this year’s Festival are digitally led projects, blurring the lines between artist and audience, making you an active participant in the creation, the execution and the narrative of artistic experiences. We are telling stories, commissioning projects and collaborating with world class artists in a way which is

only becoming possible in the new digital age. This is a journey only a festival can take you on. Perth Festival’s digital programming realises a kind of transformation that artists have long‐strived for; when ideas, stories and audience members connect in both a shared and inherently personal experience. AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE

DECA DANCE

SADEH21

A staggeringly impressive 20-year repertoire is remixed by Batsheva in this Australian exclusive, with the compilation of Naharin’s seminal moments creating a single production of disarming emotion. There is ecstasy and vulnerability, mesmeric solos and ritualistic ensembles. Different worlds are explored, transformed and presented as something astonishingly new. A boldly playful score sees the company’s devotion to adventurous concepts pour over into a perfect musical accompaniment. Deca Dance is an engaging collage from a choreographic master.

Defiantly abstract and intensely emotional, Sadeh21 is captivating. Naharin sculpts with space and silence to produce a work bounding with originality and passion. These dancers are like no other you’ve seen – their movements seemingly with a life all their own, yet in total control. Themes sway from the political to the playful in a journey that explores and pushes boundaries. Projecting both strength and a poignant sensitivity, these are electrifying bodies that move with magnetism. You won’t want to take your eyes off them for a minute.

Life, vivid and vital life: that’s really what everyone, in performance or protest, is exalting here. The Evening Standard (UK) february m

A Midsummer Night’s Dream (As You Like It) Directed by Dmitry Krymov, Designed by Vera Martynova International Excellence Partner

Created for the Royal Shakespeare Company, this work by Russian director Dmitry Krymov is genre-busting alchemy, and in a reimagining of Shakespeare’s great play he imbues such tenderness, grandeur and spectacle, that the theatre seems swollen with joy. At the heart of this exuberant production lies a love story, with endless magic whirling all around it … fruit, flowers and brilliant five-metre puppets … a massive ensemble, an opera singer, two acrobats and Venya, the performing dog. Dazzlingly executed and abundant in emotion, this stunning production assures us of Krymov’s position as one of the most original directorial voices of our generation. This is A Midsummer Night’s Dream with a twist. Krymov creates a wonderfully rich and expansive Shakespearean fantasy, focusing with absolute clarity on the simplicity and beauty of the tale of Pyramus and Thisbe. Crafted with humour, inventiveness and flair, A Midsummer Night’s Dream (As You Like It) is a euphoric interpretation of history’s first great love story. This is spell-binding theatre on an epic scale. february m

Australian Exclusive/Premiere Baxter Theatre Centre at the University of Cape Town in association with the South African State Theatre

MIES JULIE Written & Directed by Yael Farber Based on August Strindberg’s Miss Julie Music composed by Daniel and Matthew Pencer On a remote South African farm, a kitchen smoulders with brutality and tenderness. Julie, the daughter of the Afrikaans farm master, is dangerously drawn to John, one of her father’s servants, as a lifetime of nuanced and flirtatious advances explodes in a single evening of raw and intense emotion. The visceral struggles of contemporary South Africa 18 years after the end of apartheid are laid bare as this couple’s deadly attraction spirals out of control and they battle over power, sexuality, memory, mothers and land. Following sell-out seasons in Edinburgh, London and New York, this explosive new adaptation of August Strindberg’s classic gets straight to the story’s dark, steamy heart to reveal theatre at its most potent and beautiful.

Australian Exclusive/Premiere Nalaga’at Deaf-Blind Theatre

not by bread alone Created by Adina Tal and Nalaga’at Deaf-Blind Theatre Ensemble Conceived and Directed by Adina Tal

One of the most remarkable, most humbling and most profoundly affecting theatrical experiences you will ever have. THE MAIL ON SUNDAY (UK)

Anything is possible. In sell-out shows in Israel, London and New York, audiences rose to their feet to cheer the world’s only professional deaf-blind ensemble’s captivating tour of their inner world. Nalaga’at was born in the hot-bed of Jaffa, Israel, one of the most politically and culturally vibrant places on the planet. This is an uncompromisingly unique company and Not By Bread Alone is a transformative experience. As bread is kneaded, formed and baked on stage, these extraordinary storytellers convey their memories and dreams. Speaking to each other by way of drum beats, sign language, vibrations and touch, they create visually dexterous scenes soaked in tender defiance. If theatre is about communication, here we have an ensemble so in tune with one another, in a realm so complex and subtle, they are positively virtuosic. By no means a story of darkness and silence, Not By Bread Alone is a beautiful tale of something shared and understood. february m

The master of theatre himself, Robert Wilson, takes to the stage with one of Samuel Beckett’s rarely performed works.

Wilson’s desire to challenge the conventions of the stage has attracted high profile collaborators including Philip Glass, Tom Waits and most recently the Berliner Ensemble, whose The Threepenny Opera opened the Festival last year. In Krapp’s Last Tape, Wilson steps out of the shadows to take centre stage in this rare and unmissable theatrical event.

The curtain rises on ‘a late evening in the future.’ An old man sitting alone in his den on his 69th birthday prepares a recording about the past year of his life, as he has done on every birthday since he was a young man. His desk is lit by a single white light, a thundering storm cracks through a constant, chilling silence …

Australian Exclusive/Premiere Beijing Dance Theatre

Haze

Choreography by Wang Yuanyuan

Image: Huimin Li

The company doesn’t merely dance splendidly, it dances ferociously. LA TIMES

Onto a stark and unlit stage, 18 dancers enter to the low hum of white noise: so begins Beijing Dance Theatre’s resplendent portrayal of human movement and human nature. A choreographic work of rapturous beauty, Haze channels the tension between China’s complex struggle with centuries-old traditions and its headlong rush into the future. In an entirely original theatrical coup, the piece places dancers on soft and unsteady ground, a cushioned floor that creates both uncertainty and protection. With every step they are thrown off balance, heightening the dramatic pace of the piece, while enabling a daring breadth of physicality that would have otherwise been impossible. For the Australian debut of one of China’s most celebrated contemporary dance companies, Beijing Dance Theatre brings together three exceptional artists, modern choreographer Wang Yuanyuan, lighting designer Han Jiang and visual artist Tan Shaoyuan. Buoyed by a haunting soundscape of Henryk Gorecki’s Symphony No.3 and Biosphere’s ambient electronica, Haze is a sumptuous and evocative portrayal of a culture in the grip of social and spiritual change. february/march m

This is the best type of theatre, one that challenges, evokes, engages and makes you sit up and pay attention. Australian Stage on Driving into Walls

ONEFIVEZEROSEVEN Written by Suzie Miller, directed by John Sheedy In 2012 Barking Gecko Theatre Company interviewed over 500Â young people and reflected their thoughts, feelings, hopes and anxieties in Driving Into Walls, a highly physical and ultimately moving theatrical production that has since toured Australia to critical acclaim. Shift 2014 and the same creative team travel across our nation to deepen their investigation of teenage life. This fast developing generation of Australians are about to tell us, in starkly honest and revealing confessions, what really lies in their hearts and minds. ONEFIVEZEROSEVEN is the average number of breaths they take each hour, the average number of things they own, and it is the number of emotional moments a young person has in one singular day. In this visually striking work, Australian teenagers allow you a rare and thought-provoking view of everything they have, and everything they hope for.

Drawing inspiration from Parisian flamenco performances of the 1920s, La Curva is an intricate study of the genre, delivered with a seductive avant-garde twist. The traditional elements are there – virtuosic footwork, thumping percussive rhythms and a moody musical accompaniment, but Galván brings something of his own, a full body phenomenon, in a joyous collision of auditory power and experimental movement.

LIONEL SHRIVER: ON LITERATURE AND RELIGION Although her novels confront the moral issues of our times, Lionel Shriver has long avoided religion in her work. An atheist, Shriver confesses that to make her characters religious would, for her, make them ‘unfathomable’. Her fictional characters do not adhere to any faith. Literature and religion share a common purpose in what they address and the purpose they serve humanity: to sustain us with stories. In a candid reflection based on her personal experiences, Shriver examines the intersection of literature and religion in this thought-provoking opening address. NET-WORK A vast net enmeshed with tiny human figures washing against the shoreline is emblematic of Do Ho Suh’s distinguished art that often references architecture and humanity. Inspired by memories and his personal experience of physical and cultural displacement, his poetic sculptures invite imaginative associations. This delicate yet powerful web encourages contemplation of the identity of the individual in today’s global society. Net-Work might suggest the power of the collective over the individual, yet it can equally conjure thoughts of migration, refugees and the traversing and trawling of seas. Do Ho Suh is a highly acclaimed South Korean artist who resides between Seoul, New York and London. THE REFUSAL Embassy OF TIME a collaboration with philip miller, catherine meyburgh and peter galison

By one of the most compelling artists of our time, this powerful work epitomises William Kentridge’s intriguing, multi-disciplinary practice. An all-encompassing installation of five videos which combine the magic of theatre, drawing and music with film and animation. Projections of shadow dancers are punctuated by the rhythmic command of metronomes and appearances of the artist himself. Amidst this sits a ‘breathing machine’, a wooden sculpture akin to an accordion pulsing time. The presentation of this Australian exclusive is a major collaboration between the artist, AGWA, PICA and Perth Festival.

For over 20 years Richard Bell has been an artist and active provocateur who has challenged the state of art and politics in Australia. Embassy is Bell’s first solo exhibition in Western Australia and will feature a recreation of the original Aboriginal Tent Embassy, the protest camp set up in 1972 under a beach umbrella on the lawns of Parliament House in Canberra. This significant solo exhibition presented by PICA and Perth Festival will also bring together a previously unseen selection of Bell’s highly acclaimed paintings and a controversial trilogy of recent videos. MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING DIRECTOR JOSS WHEDON  108min, M SOMERVILLE 25 Nov–1 Dec, 8pm JOONDALUP 3–8 Dec, 8pm

In Joss Whedon’s signature style, an infinitely sexy cast delivers a wildly fresh reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s most playful comedy. Moving from slapstick to calamity and back with dizzying speed, the screen crackles with a charmingly wayward energy that recalls the classic romantic sparring of the studio era. Will love prevail? As clear and light as a California wine, Shakespeare’s most sparkling dialogue meets its match in Whedon. SIGHT AND SOUND
