WELCOME TO
LOTTERYWEST FILMS
2017/2018
Perhaps we invented storytelling to relax, to take a break from the stresses of the hunter-gatherer life. Or perhaps it was because sharing in an experience outside of ourselves helps to bring us together. As our stories became more sophisticated, the best storytellers, and the best stories, became famous. Whether it was 60,000 years ago or right here and now, storytelling makes us feel emotion. How does it feel to be the best in the world at something (Borg vs McEnroe), to make art for everybody (Faces Places, The Square), to be in love (Aurore, God’s Own Country), to be a total stranger in town (The Other Side of Hope, Thelma), to be desperate (Good Time, The Party), to make your passion your way of life (Back to Burgundy, Pecking Order) or to live in the world’s best building (Living Architectures)? That’s a lot of feelings and we need a meeting place to make the best of them. Whatever the film and whatever the emotion, our two open-air pine grove cinemas are the very best environments at which to meet and dream. This is the best of the year’s film from around the world and I hope that by showing these 11 films – with more to be announced in January – we can meet as we always have to share stories and the feelings they give us.

What’s so good about ‘The Good Life’?
Two intense souls, one spellbinding sporting duel.
Following the death of his father, Jean reluctantly comes home to his family vineyard after ten years overseas. He reconnects with his wine making siblings and must decide whether to return to his new life in Australia or dedicate himself to the family business.
The Wimbledon tennis championships of 1980 ended with one of the greatest sporting encounters ever seen: Sweden’s ice-cool four-time Men’s Singles Champion Björn Borg, versus snotty New York upstart John McEnroe (a never-better Shia LaBeouf). As the clock ticks down to their utterly thrilling showdown, surprising vulnerabilities emerge.
Set in the Burgundy region’s stunning vineyards, this French family drama abounds in the pleasures of wine, the passing of the seasons and familiar sibling rivalry. ‘A lively and tender look at a family saga, inhabited by a new team of charismatic actors.’ Le Parisien
Whether you know the outcome or not, or whether you even care about tennis, it doesn’t matter – Borg vs McEnroe is fascinating drama and an exhilarating battle of personalities. ‘(LaBeouf) is terrific in a role that shrewdly plays off his controversial off-screen persona.’ Variety

A dinner party from hell gathers old friends in honour of Janet, recently appointed a Shadow Minister. As politics and personalities collide the celebrations turn to chaos and secrets spill out over the vol-au-vents.
Stuffed full of charm, Pecking Order is the year’s funniest, most loveable documentary.
With a barrage of killer one-liners and an energy that zings, The Party is a wickedly entertaining get together you won’t want to leave.

When faced with a midlife crisis do you accept your fate or try and start over?
An absurd jet-black comedy that will leave you breathless.
French with English subtitles
Fifty, separated, unemployed and about to become a grandmother, Aurore feels increasingly ignored by society. After bumping into the great love of her youth she wonders if a whole new life might still be possible. Actress and co-writer Agnès Jaoui is the heart and soul of this witty feel-good film. She brings a touching poignancy to an endearing portrait of an everyday heroine on the road to rediscovery.
English, Swedish and Danish with some English subtitles
In the run-up to his bold new exhibition called ‘The Square’, the wellmeaning head of an art museum reacts shamefully when his mobile phone is cunningly pickpocketed. With its brilliant world of daft media stunts and confounding artspeak, The Square offers a goldmine of awkward dark humour. This deliriously strange parody of art and imagination marks director Ruben Östlund (Force Majeure) as modern cinema’s most savage and inventive satirist. Winner Best Film 2017 Cannes Film Festival

Super-droll Scandi humour takes on a story for our times.
Love thaws a frozen soul in the most striking British film of the year.
Arriving accidentally in Helsinki as a stowaway, Syrian asylum seeker Khaled has hopes for a future as a legitimate Finn. When he crosses paths with grumpy former shirt salesman turned restaurateur Wikstrom, the two become unlikely companions.
Young Johnny Saxby resents toiling on his family farm in the bleak Yorkshire hills. Angry and alone, he lives for the weekend. But when Romanian seasonal worker Gheorghe joins the farm, this hard heart begins to soften.
Director Aki Kaurismäki perfectly nails the experience of helplessness in this surprising comedy. He refuses to shy away from hardship but expertly wraps it in plenty of deadpan northern European humour.
The rural Yorkshire setting is distinct, and you’ll recognise right away the beauty of Johnny’s gradual emotional dawn in this tender, authentic and extraordinarily moving film.

BÊKA & LEMOINE DOLPHIN THEATRE, UWA | 24 & 25 Feb How does it feel to live in a work of art? Since 2008 filmmakers Ila Bêka and Louise Lemoine have made funny and intriguing films that uniquely investigate what we mean when we call a building ‘great’ and how these great buildings can make people think and feel. Their ‘Living Architectures’ series gives us special insight not only into amazing buildings but how they affect the people who use them every day. To coincide with a focus on architecture at Writers Week, we present four highlights from ‘Living Architectures’ – Koolhaas Houselife, Barbicania, The Infinite Happiness and their latest work, Moriyama-san, in its Australian premiere.
