Welcome to Season Two of Lotterywest Festival Films Our program of the best new films from around the world continues with nine more weeks at UWA Somerville and ECU Joondalup Pines, Australia’s finest outdoor cinemas. It has been a huge pleasure to select the films for Season Two, which include Miles Ahead and La belle saison, both of which were finished just in time to be unveiled in Perth, and The Wait and Sherpa which will be presented by their directors, our guests at the Festival. Season Two also incorporates films that are like nothing else you will see all year – The End of the Tour, Embrace of the Serpent and A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence, to name just three. We also introduce The Big Picture – three classic films, which have influenced Perth Writers Festival guests, James Bradley, Lauren Groff and Patrick deWitt. Each writer will give a brief introduction to the film they have selected before it screens at UWA’s Dolphin Theatre. Selected features will be accompanied by new Australian short films, and look out for dance film, Spear, at the State Theatre Centre of WA, and Screenkids, our short animation program for children at the Subiaco Arts Centre. There is a lot to get excited about this season – summer is looking good. Tom Vincent Program Manager: Film Photo: Tom Vincent cr. THE WAIT + THE GUESTS, 11 mins
Cast: Juliette Binoche, Lou de Laâge DIRECTOR PIERO MESSINA, 98 mins, M Italian and French with English subtitles Mon 1–Sun 7 Feb, 8pm | UWA Somerville Tue 9–Sun 14 Feb, 8pm | ECU Joondalup Pines Single mother Anna (Oscar-winning actress Juliette Binoche, The English Patient, Chocolat, Three Colours: Blue) is in shock following the death of her teenage son Giuseppe. Shuttered up in a villa in mourning, she is visited by Giuseppe’s girlfriend Jeanne, who is unaware of recent events; and Anna is in no hurry to reveal the truth. The Wait is a calm, stylish and atmospheric tale, with a spine-tingling lead performance from Binoche as a woman in denial. Piero Messina is a guest of the Festival and will attend screenings on Monday 1, Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 February for Q&As.
AUSTRALIA/NEPAL
SHERPA: TROUBLE ON EVEREST DIRECTOR JENNIFER PEEDOM 96 mins, CTC Sherpa, Nepali and English with English subtitles Mon 8–Sun 14 Feb, 8pm | UWA Somerville Tue 16–Sun 21 Feb, 8pm | ECU Joondalup Pines A moving story of courage and greed, set against the magnificent backdrop of Everest. This documentary was filmed during the calamitous 2014 climbing season, when 16 Sherpa guides were killed while moving across an ice-flow to aid Western climbers. Following the disaster, climbers and Sherpas entered into a tense mountaintop stalemate. This exhilarating film exposes many truths about money, Nepal, and the meeting of first and third worlds atop this alluring, spiritual peak. Jennifer Peedom is a guest of the Festival and will attend the screening on Monday 8 February for a Q&A.

THE END OF THE TOUR Cast: Jason Segel, Jesse Eisenberg, Joan Cusack, Anna Chlumsky DIRECTOR JAMES PONSOLDT, 106 mins, M Mon 15–Sun 21 Feb, 8pm | UWA Somerville Tue 23–Sun 28 Feb, 8pm | ECU Joondalup Pines Teeming with ideas to swell the heart and dazzle the mind, this film relives the 1996 meeting-of-minds between author, David Foster Wallace, who was hurtling to unprecedented fame for Infinite Jest, and hotshot journalist, David Lipsky. During their road trip through the wintry beauty of the American Midwest, these two smart but fragile minds debate everything, from art, writing and ego to candy, TV and Die Hard. It was, in Lipsky’s words, ‘the best conversation I ever had’ and now, thanks to two enthralling performances, it has borne one of the best films of the year.
FRANCE
LA BELLE SAISON (SUMMERTIME) Cast: Cécile De France, Izïa Higelin, Noémie Lvovsky DIRECTOR CATHERINE CORSINI, 105 mins, MA French with English subtitles Mon 22–28 Feb, 8pm | UWA Somerville Tue 1–Sun 6 March, 8pm | ECU Joondalup Pines That giddy, all-consuming thrill of first love is conveyed with great empathy in La belle saison. It is 1971 and smart, young Delphine is bored at home on her parents’ farm in the verdant French countryside. She flees to Paris and immediately falls for older Carole (Cécile De France, In Harmony, 2016 PIAF), a leader in the emerging women's rights movement. La belle saison is many things all at once – a swoon-worthy love affair, a fascinating snapshot of the 1970s and a window to female friendships across a cultural divide. Beautifully realised ... a luminous, golden-hued period piece. VARIETY 5

THE LEGEND OF BARNEY THOMSON + NULLA NULLA, 15 mins Cast: Robert Carlyle, Emma Thompson, Ray Winstone, Tom Courtenay DIRECTOR ROBERT CARLYLE, 96 mins, MA Mon 29 Feb–Sun 6 Mar, 8pm | UWA Somerville Tue 8–Sun 13 Mar, 7.30pm | ECU Joondalup Pines Barber Barney Thomson (Robert Carlyle, The Full Monty) has a problem – his banter is so tedious that he’s become a liability at his Glasgow workplace. As events take a grisly turn and customers and staff start to disappear, Barney, with blood on his hands, turns to his bingo-loving mother, played by a near-unrecognisable Emma Thompson (Love Actually, Nanny McPhee) for help. A salty, Scottish black comedy, enhanced by Thompson’s macabre matriarch. Emma Thompson is cast uproariously … this is pulp with the seeds left in, and you’ll be picking them from between your teeth for weeks. THE TELEGRAPH (UK)

MILES AHEAD
Cast: Don Cheadle, Ewan McGregor, Emayatzy Corinealdi DIRECTOR DON CHEADLE, 100 mins, CTC Mon 7–Sun 13 Mar, 7.30pm | UWA Somerville Tue 15–Sun 20 Mar, 7.30pm | ECU Joondalup Pines After changing music forever, not once but multiple times, Miles Davis disappeared from public view in 1975. Afflicted by painful health problems and nursing both a drug habit and a broken heart, Davis slunk into wary, reptilian hermitage in his chaotic New York apartment. This fascinating episode of Davis’ life, incorporating his fleeting flashes of creative alchemy, is captured by director and leading actor, Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda). Oscar-nominee Cheadle has made a film for fans and newcomers alike; it’s a gutsy, absorbing account of Davis’ complexity, and a demonstration of how to depict a mercurial genius.

ICELAND
RAMS Cast: Sigurður Sigurjónsson, Theodór Júlíusson, Charlotte Bøving DIRECTOR GRÍMUR HÁKONARSON 93 mins, M Icelandic with English subtitles Mon 14–Sun 20 Mar, 7.30pm | UWA Somerville Tue 22–Thur 24 & Sat 26–Sun 27 Mar, 7.30pm | ECU Joondalup Pines Gummi and Kiddi are brothers and neighbours, yet they have barely spoken in 40 years. They are rival famers in a tiny sheep-breeding community, hemmed into a remote Icelandic valley. Men of immense pride but very few words, Gummi and Kiddi are forced to interact when their rams are threatened by disease. A thread of deadpan Nordic humour runs through this tale of sheep, liquor, stubbornness and deep-buried love, which was a major crowd-pleaser at the Cannes Film Festival. An accomplished, original work ... filled with wintry melancholy and captivating charm. SCREEN INTERNATIONAL

EMBRACE OF THE SERPENT Cast: Jan Bijvoet, Brionne Davis, Antonio Bolivar DIRECTOR CIRO GUERRA, 125 mins, CTC Spanish, Portuguese, German, Catalan and Latin with English subtitles Mon 21–Thur 24 & Sat 26–Sun 27 Mar, 7.30pm | UWA Somerville This exquisite, dreamlike tale of Amazonian adventure is a treat for all the senses. In 1909, German scientist Theodor Koch-Grunberg travelled down the Amazon to learn about its people and search for a fabled healing plant. Thirty years later, American Richard Evans Schultes tried to repeat Koch-Grunberg ’s research. Embrace of the Serpent is a poetic, philosophical and even trance-like journey through time and space, full of gorgeous images, strange thrills and potent ideas. Embrace of the Serpent is ... one of the most singular cinematic experiences you could hope to have. THE PLAYLIST

OUR LITTLE SISTER + THE BOYFRIEND GAME, 7 mins Cast: Haruka Ayase, Masami Nagasawa, Kaho, Suzu Hirose DIRECTOR HIROKAZU KOREEDA, 128 mins, CTC Japanese with English subtitles Mon 28 Mar–Sun 3 Apr 7.30pm | UWA Somerville Tue 5–Thur 6 & Sat 9–Sun 10 Apr 7.30pm | ECU Joondalup Pines This subtle family drama with an uplifting Japanese flavour is the latest film by master director, Hirokazu Koreeda (Like Father, Like Son, 2014 PIAF). Set in a bright, warm summer in picturesque Kamakura, the story concerns three sisters in their 20s who welcome a 14-yearold half-sister into their house after the girls’ errant father passes away. The sisters’ friendship, as well as their battles, are acutely observed. Our Little Sister is a cherishable summertime delight. Quiet, understated and gentle, and presented with wonderful freshness and clarity. THE GUARDIAN (UK)

A PIGEON SAT ON A BRANCH REFLECTING ON EXISTENCE Cast: Holger Andersson, Nils Westblom, Charlotta Larsson DIRECTOR ROY ANDERSSON, 101 mins, M Swedish with English subtitles Tue 29 Mar–Sun 3 Apr, 7.30pm | ECU Joondalup Pines Mon 4–Sun 10 Apr, 7.30pm | UWA Somerville This series of quietly absurd, deadpan comic delights comes courtesy of Sweden, in a masterfully composed movie that’s like no other. Winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, A Pigeon... is the long-awaited follow-up to director Roy Andersson’s 2009 PIAF hit, You, the Living. But no prior knowledge is necessary as we recognise the pathos of being human via encounters with a pair of inept salesmen, a nervous flamenco student and King Charles XII of Sweden. Sublimely ridiculous and exquisitely silly, this film overflows with life-affirming soul. 11
SPEAR Cast: Hunter Page-Lochard, Aaron Pedersen, Djakapurra Munyarryun and Bangarra dancers DIRECTOR STEPHEN PAGE, 84 mins, M Fri 26–Sat 27 Feb, 7pm STUDIO UNDERGROUND, STATE THEATRE CENTRE OF WA Adult $17 Friends $15 Conc $16 Full-time Students $13
A foot in each world. A heart in none. Acclaimed artistic director and choreographer, Stephen Page, brings Bangarra Dance Theatre’s outstanding dance work, Spear, to the screen. Using gesture and dance, Spear follows a young Aboriginal man named Djali (Hunter Page-Lochard) from the outback to the streets of Sydney on his quest to understand what it means to be a man with ancient traditions in a modern world. Stephen Page is a guest of the Festival and will host a post-screening Q&A on Friday 26 February. A weird, wonderful milestone of a dance movie. THE GUARDIAN (UK)
