PREMIER OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA
The Right Honourable the Lord Mayor
Vice-Chancellor, The University of Western Australia
The 2015 Perth International Arts Festival is Jonathan Holloway’s last and brings to culmination the various threads his previous Festivals have pursued. Jonathan’s strong emphasis on community involvement will be reflected in the extraordinary Royal de Luxe commemoration of the centenary of Anzac, which will engage hundreds of thousands of Western Australians throughout the state.
The 63rd Perth International Arts Festival is a chance for all Western Australians to participate in a wide range of experiences.
Spanning more than 60 years, Perth International Arts Festival and the City of Perth share a longstanding partnership. The Festival has consistently delighted and challenged Perth audiences and each year brings the community together in a celebration of culture and ideas.
The University is proud to be associated with the 63rd Perth International Arts Festival, one that coincides with the centenary year of the Gallipoli landing and the beginning of the Anzac tradition.
The full Festival program includes some truly outstanding international productions that are coming to Australia for the first time – works of such scale and significance that they are rarely performed outside London or New York. I would like to congratulate Jonathan and the Festival team for once again delivering such an extraordinary program of events. There is something for everyone, and I encourage you to make the most of this, Jonathan’s final bow to Western Australia.
One of the highlights will be Royal de Luxe presenting The Incredible and Phenomenal Journey of The Giants to the Streets of Perth. Over three days, two Giants will take us on a journey and enthral audiences as they make Perth their home. The State Government has supported The Giants as a gift of immense cultural, community and commemorative importance to Western Australia. The story, inspired by the spirit of Anzac, will transcend generations and ignite the imaginations of our children. This world-class event – exclusive to Western Australia – is a special way to commemorate the centenary of Anzac, and will be talked about for years to come. The State Government, through Lotterywest, has been the principal partner of the Festival for more than 20 years. An import ant program has been Vital Stages, which offers local artists the opportunity to be part of the Festival experience. This Festival will be the finale for Artistic Director Jonathan Holloway. We all thank Jonathan for his creative vision and for all that he has brought to Western Australia.
Perth International Arts Festival has a reputation for bringing unexpected, amazing and inspiring works to our city, and 2015 is no exception. The Giants, accompanied by their human chaperones Royal de Luxe, will traverse the streets of Perth over three days in February, inspired by our unique Western Australian stories. The Incredible and Phenomenal Journey of The Giants to the Streets of Perth will be the biggest free public arts event Western Australia has ever seen and we welcome the Giants as part of the state’s commemorations for Anzac’s 100th anniversary. Their arrival on our shores is a reflection of the scale of character and commitment of Artistic Director Jonathan Holloway, to whom we bid farewell at the end of his four-year tenure. He will truly leave behind giant shoes to fill and fond memories for the people of Perth to enjoy for many years to come.
The Festival’s history of bringing world-class performances and unforgettable experiences to the Western Australian community will continue in 2015. Artistic Director Jonathan Holloway has again proved his genius for selecting events that resonate, this time with The Incredible and Phenomenal Journey of The Giants to the Streets of Perth – inspired by stories first told in many Western Australian families 100 years ago. The University’s campus will come alive during the Festival with some exciting new events, as well as the Perth Writers Festival and Lotterywest Festival Films. As the Festival’s founder, the University congratulates Jonathan Holloway on his wonderful directorship and looks forward to this, his final Festival, as it inspires and engages the wider community.

Royal de Luxe The incredible and phenomenal journey of
The Giants to the streets of Perth Commemorating the centenary of Anzac Fri 13–Sun 15 Feb 2015
Do you remember what it was like to be a child? To see the world with wide-eyed wonder?
Once upon a time in a desert in the west, a Little Girl Giant fell from the sky into one of those communities in love with the stars, the earth, the trees, the water. One day, she found an old book full of love and sorrow, hope and lost battles. The Little Girl Giant knew then what she had to do. With a tear in her eye, she climbed aboard her boat and set sail across the sand for the big city …
Over three memorable days in February, we will be immersed in a modern-day fable, played out by the Giants across the streets of Perth. This is our story, our people, our culture and our country. The Incredible and Phenomenal Journey of The Giants to the Streets of Perth takes inspiration from uniquely Western Australian stories – of ancient lands, Gallipoli-bound troops and a little girl in a lighthouse who buoyed their spirits. This is our chance to ensure a new generation of Western Australians comes to hold dear that which has shaped us. free and spectacular

Once we have walked with the Giants, our city will never look the same again. IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES There are certain moments in history that etch themselves on our minds, momentous occasions we remember long after the fanfare has faded – The Incredible and Phenomenal Journey of The Giants to the Streets of Perth will be one of those moments. Put aside the day-to-day, surround yourself with those you know and love, and be part of a truly transforming commemoration of the centenary of Anzac. This is an experience to be shared and remembered.
BE IN PERTH IN FEBRUARY 2015 The Giants is a three-day event with surprises each day. The story begins on Friday 13 February and as the Giants walk our streets, they will become part of the city and include us all in the spectacle. On Saturday, the story – and the theatre – continues, until Sunday when we come together for the finale.
MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR EXPERIENCE The Giants are sure to attract large crowds and we want you to make the most of your experience. In late January, information will be available online and in The West Australian to assist with your planning. You will find details on the Giants’ routes, as well as times, road closures, vantage points, accessible areas, transport and parking. You will also find out how to get involved through Anzac Profiles and Postcards from Home. And if you have friends or loved ones joining you from interstate or overseas, we have visitor packages available to assist in their travel arrangements. We are all about ‘the moment’ within a performance – that golden moment when artists and audiences share a live space for the first time. As a festival, half of our energy goes into delivering to you the best experiences from around the world. The other half – the half you rarely see – goes into identifying and supporting Western Australian artists to create their best work. Our purpose is to work with them, to assist them in putting their extraordinary talents onto an international stage.
The 2015 Vital Stages program allows us to employ more Western Australians to contribute to Festival events than ever before. That means more artists reaching more people and creating exceptional art – it is something that could only occur at Festival time. Together, we are enhancing cultural life in Western Australia, for all Western Australians.
With essential support from Lotterywest, Vital Stages is an important part of the Festival and enables us to home in on stages of the artistic process where support – whether through investment, resources, advocacy or advice – would enable a project to be realised.

WE’RE ALL LEARNING. ALL OF THE TIME. Festivals are essential in engaging children and their families in dynamic events that live on in their memories and imaginations. Shared stories that are experienced live bring us together, make our community stronger and contribute to an enriching cultural life. The 2015 Perth International Arts Festival truly has something for everyone. Thanks to our Family and Education Program Partner Rio Tinto, we now engage with more than 10,000 school students and thousands of families each year. Festival events are linked to key learning areas in the Western Australian curriculum, and are layered with workshops and professional development opportunities for students and teachers. Much of this activity cannot be seen when you sit in a theatre, but it bubbles away among the youngest theatre makers, critics and audiences of Western Australia.

REACHING FOR THE STARS.
To be world-class takes talent, energy and opportunity.
Our job, on the other hand, is simple – to reach out to the world’s greatest artists, to handpick the most relevant work, and to present it in a way that creates the most memorable experiences for everyone involved. This year’s Festival has the potential to deliver an almost infinite number of such moments, and we will all experience them at different times and in myriad ways. Perth International Arts Festival is the longest running annual multi-arts celebration in the southern hemisphere, and Western Australia’s premier cultural event. In this third year of our International Excellence Partnership with Chevron Australia, we have been able to reach out to even more artists of unparalleled quality and diversity. It is a partnership like this that helps us to dream big and deliver extraordinary live arts experiences for you, and for all Western Australians.

To witness Anthony Minghella’s Madama Butterfly is to witness the best visual theatrical production opera currently has to offer. The Huffington Post
Madama Butterfly By Giacomo Puccini Directed by Anthony Minghella
Hailed as ‘the most beautiful show of the year in operatic London’, Anthony Minghella’s Olivier Award-winning Madama Butterfly is performed in Australia for the first time. Known for directing films such as The English Patient and The Talented Mr Ripley, Minghella has created a stunning mix of cinematic images and traditional Japanese theatre. This is the late director’s only opera production and is celebrated as the most iconic staging of Butterfly. Puccini’s tragic love story tells of Butterfly (Cio-Cio San), a young Japanese girl who falls in love with an American naval officer, Pinkerton. Shortly after their wedding, Pinkerton returns to America, leaving Butterfly alone to await her husband’s return. Set to the gloriously romantic melodies of Puccini’s music, this moving story of devotion and betrayal has established Madama Butterfly as one of the world’s most performed and beloved operas.

Mark Morris Dance Group
Mozart Dances Choreography by Mark Morris Music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
New York’s most acclaimed dance company, Mark Morris Dance Group, visits Perth for the first time with a masterful work that entices, enthrals and uplifts. Mark Morris is a titan of modern American dance, and when his choreography is matched with the music of Mozart, the result is nothing short of astonishing. In Mozart Dances, an 18-strong dance ensemble is joined by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and pianists Colin Fowler and Amir Farid in a monumental display of exquisite art. The performance exudes mastery of form – the inevitable consequence of Morris’ artistic and structural genius. Befitting of Mozart’s compositions are the lightness, surprise and joy of the choreography. Its playfulness and wit remind you that it’s good to be alive. Mozart Dances is a powerful and stirring performance you feel deep inside. From the soaringly balletic to the exhilaratingly modern, this is dance that turns on a dime. february M

It is synthetic theatre at its boldest, most expressive and physical, where the imagination stalks unchained on stage and the spirits of the land move unseen among us. The Australian (on crying baby)
Concept by Dalisa Pigram and Rachael Swain Directed by Rachael Swain Choreographed by Dalisa Pigram and Serge Aimé Coulibaly Storyteller Edwin Lee Mulligan
In the dead of night on 7 August 1980, a convoy of 49 drilling vehicles left Perth for the dusty plains, purple escarpment and old boab trees of Noonkanbah Cattle Station. They were stopped by a wall of people whose now-infamous protest set a new direction for Aboriginal land rights forever. In 30 years we have come so far, but as we face our future, have the questions changed or are they still the same? Who will be there to sing the rain song when the sky speaks?

BLACK DIGGERS
One hundred years have passed since the Great War yet some stories remain untold – Black Diggers is one of them. Through interweaving vignettes, an all-star cast of male actors tells of the hundreds of dispossessed Indigenous soldiers who heard the call to arms and stepped up to fight for Australia on the battlefields of Europe.
This production has been commissioned with support from the Balnaves Foundation.

Ubu and the Truth Commission
Conceived and directed by William Kentridge Written by Jane Taylor Puppets designed by Adrian Kohler Presented by arrangement with Arts Projects Australia Renowned artist, animator and director William Kentridge and Handspring Puppet Company (War Horse) combine their powerful visual storytelling forces to create a momentous piece of theatre, laced with a dark and sardonic wit. Drawing on the historical archive of the hearings at South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, as well as Ubu Roi, a licentious buffoon created by the playwright Alfred Jarry, the play provides a glimpse into the devastating complexities of apartheid.

A dreamy mingle of installation art with wistful monologue and projection. The Paper Architect is a filigree fantasy.
A paper architect sits secluded in his workshop. In this intimate setting, we look on in awe as he plays out wistful fantasies with his elaborate paper creations. When he places a cut-out dancing woman onto an intricate paper set, she comes alive. He adds a paper man and watches their romance unfold. Birds fly overhead, leaves flutter from a tree and firecrackers flicker across the night sky as we share the model-maker’s hopes and desires, and feel his joys and sorrows.

HACK THE FESTIVAL
Bring your young future posties to one of three venues during the Festival to take part in The Future Postal Service. This high-energy, big-thinking mail delivery game captures the thoughts of children and delivers them to adult passers-by, allowing kids to make an adult-dominated space their own.
Australia’s first ‘art hack’ is a fast-paced event where you are the artist. Working at the convergence of art and technology, you and your team have 24 hours to create a digitally interactive artwork. It could be an app or a website, or it may involve robotics or projection. As long as your idea is interactive and it is art, then you are invited to Hack the Festival.
Children move through a series of stations, thinking, drawing, writing and delivery training, before they put on the official blue hat and deliver a postcard, as a random act of kindness, to a person walking by. Part installation, part intervention and one big game of post, The Future Postal Service is a delightful and insightful experience for adults and children alike. Supported by

Blending dynamic circus acts, such as trapeze and Chinese pole, with giant rabbit heads, Rubik’s cubes and blindfolds, all set to a bewitching mix of show tunes, ballads and electronica, this creation delights and enchants.
Circa has been rapturously received by audiences in 30 countries across six continents. With Beyond, the company provides you with not only a spectacle but also an extraordinary experience – a circus of the heart. february M

Les Arts Florissants and William Christie
in an Italian Garden
Les Arts Florissants is one of the most renowned early-music groups in the world. Founded by eminent harpsichordist William Christie in 1979, the acclaimed group has carved out its own place among the best orchestras performing today. In this rare Australian concert, Christie and the full orchestra are joined by six singers, selected from across the globe as part of his world-famous master-class academy Le Jardin des Voix. This is a celebration of Christie’s great passion – Italian Baroque lyric work, with arias and ensembles by Vivaldi, Handel, Scarlatti, Stradella, Steffani, Caldara and Cimarosa. Delight in a musical banquet as this extraordinary ensemble brings to vivid life the music of Baroque masters.

Tuomo Prättälä and Felix Zenger Artistic director Matthew Hoy SCORed by TILMAN ROBINSON
Lauded Finnish composer, singer and pianist Tuomo Prättälä and his beatboxing compatriot Felix Zenger join an ensemble of ten of Western Australia’s finest instrumentalists to produce a fusion of electronic, acoustic, scored and improvised music.
Accompanied by the period instruments of the renowned Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, images from London, Paris, Delft, Leipzig and Venice draw us into the very buildings where the great composers once played for their patrons. On the walls hang now-famous works by Vermeer, Canaletto and Watteau – novices at the time.
Arranged by exciting young Australian composer Tilman Robinson, and incorporating new works by Prättälä and other leading contemporary Scandinavian composers, this concert has been created exclusively for the Perth International Arts Festival.
Leading us through the hallways and salons, narrator Blair Williams shares stories of the people who lived and worked in these remarkable homes. And for a moment in time, we imagine we are there with them.
Like the Northern Lights of their homeland, Prättälä and Zenger bring together a mysterious, unexpected and impressive combination of elements.

Hailing from Brooklyn, their instantly addictive, sharp-witted, post-punk garage-rock nods to early Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Velvet Underground. If you haven’t stumbled across Parquet Courts already, this is the night you will fall under their spell.

The pop pioneer of the 80s and 90s has made a triumphant return with her first solo album in 17 years, the bold and provocative Blank Project. With elements of beat poetry, avantelectronica and beautiful, rich vocal melodies, the effortlessly cool Neneh Cherry demonstrates a rare and dizzying capacity to traverse pop, tough techno and hypermodern rhythms. Cherry performs alongside duo RocketNumberNine in what promises to be a feverish live show.

Charlie Musselwhite is a harmonica master. His subtle yet expressive playing, along with his ragged, world-weary vocals, have earned him an induction into the Blues Music Hall of Fame, 35 Blues Music Awards and 11 Grammy nominations. Among bluesmen, he is a legend and rumour has it he was the inspiration for Dan Aykroyd’s character in The Blues Brothers. Geoffrey Robertson QC is one of the world’s leading human rights lawyers, and his book Crimes Against Humanity has been an inspiration for the global justice movement. Robertson has been counsel in many notable Old Bailey trials, and has won landmark rulings on civil liberty from the highest courts in Britain, Europe and the Commonwealth. Described by Christopher Hitchens as ‘the greatest living Australian’ and by The Times of London as ‘anti-establishment, republican and Australian’, Robertson delivers the opening address of the 2015 Perth Writers Festival with trademark intelligence, humour and humanity. Presented in association with the Law Society of Western Australia.
Lawyer and revered TED speaker Bryan Stevenson has drawn comparisons with fictional hero Atticus Finch for his compassionate and steadfast pursuit of justice. He has been representing capital defendants and death row prisoners in the Deep South since 1985. As an idealistic young man, he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most in need. Stevenson’s work has earned him a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, the Olof Palme Prize for international human rights, and membership of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. To take in your hands a beautifully produced magazine is to carve out a moment of time in which to dream and explore. Existing in the realm between the printed page and online publishing, artfully curated publications are flourishing, defying ongoing predictions that the age of print magazines is ending. Celebrate the editorial creativity of this thriving medium in a series of discussions with the masterminds behind publications, such as Kinfolk, Dumbo Feather, Renegade Collective, Frankie and Alphabet Family Journal.
As we eagerly await the third instalment of her Tudor saga, Mantel has published a new collection of ten short stories, The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher. At this special event, Hilary Mantel joins us via video link from London in a live conversation with a special guest host on stage at the Concert Hall.
In her hugely successful memoir Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert took us on a spiritual and gastronomic journey around the world. Written with warmth and humour, it became a favourite among readers across the globe, sat on The New York Times Best Seller list for 187 weeks, and was transformed into a blockbuster film starring Julia Roberts.

The Visitors + THE END The visitors John Curtin Gallery, CURTIN UNIVERSITY Thur 12 Feb–Thur 2 April Mon–Fri, 11am–5pm Sun, 1–5pm
Tokyo-born, New York and London-based Mariko Mori is one of the most important artists of our time. Through an exploration of themes such as life, death and rebirth, her work resonates with audiences around the world.
The Visitors, an immersive, nine-channel musical video installation, fills the John Curtin Gallery. Captured in a single take within a rambling mansion, nine intimate portraits of Kjartansson and his friends are recombined into this rapturous ode to femininity.
The End – rocky mountains Fremantle Arts Centre Sat 14 Feb–Sun 5 April 10am–5pm daily
Rebirth is an immersive, contemplative experience composed of installations, glowing LED sculptures, photographs, drawings and videos. Quiet and beautiful, this thoughtful and absorbing exhibition takes us from a sculpture symbolising the eternal cycle of life to the creation of a pulsing white hole - where stars are born. Emanating positivity and generating wonder, Rebirth celebrates our existing balance with nature and gently places you between the earth and the wider cosmos.
This double bill provides comprehensive insight into Kjartansson’s energy and breadth of work, making it clear why in 2009 he was the youngest artist ever to represent Iceland at the Venice Biennale.

In an honest, unruly and comic TV series pilot, Moffatt quizzes eight artists on what art means to them. Australian Artists at the Freud Museum London
PICA, Perth Cultural Centre Thur 19 Feb–Sun 12 April Tue–Sun, 10am–5pm
An Internal Difficulty brings together seven Western Australian artists to examine the figure of Sigmund Freud in his domestic context. In 2013, the artists undertook a residency at the Freud Museum in London, the townhouse in which Freud and his family settled after fleeing the Nazi occupation of Austria. The museum houses the late psychoanalyst’s extraordinary collections of art, antiquities, textiles, prints, furniture and library, with the iconic psychoanalytical couch as its centrepiece. Stemming from privileged insight into Freud’s final months, the artists’ resulting works represent an intimate reconsideration of one of the most influential figures of the 20th century.

There is hardly a shortage of movies about rock ‘n’ roll, but there are few as perfect – which is to say as ragged, as silly, as touching or as true – as We Are the Best! THE NEW YORK TIMES Returning to work after a leave of absence, Sandra is faced with the incredible task of persuading her colleagues to forego their bonuses in order to guarantee that she keeps her job. With only the weekend to convince the majority, Sandra must summon reserves of courage to argue her case.
