“ The master FIGUEIREDO SOBRAL - in great injustice, the most ignored of the great contemporary Portuguese painters - has been persistently defining himself, along a career that already surpasses the five decades, as a “baroque surrealist” of the highest quality. If this work began as essentially pictorial, it quickly sought other aesthetic landscapes, thanks to a work that made experimentation rhyme with dissatisfaction, between engraving and ceramics, tapestry and sculpture. In all these varied aspects, its unmistakable originality resumes an enormous oneiric charge demonstrated in the profusion of detail. This “dreamed reality” is projected, either through a strict figurative, or through flying abstractions in the intermingling of resins with ink or in the purification of watercolor.

“(...) The philosophical dimension of Umber to Eco or João Rui de Sousa is captured in the subtlety of the relief and subversion of form and colour. D. Quixote and Dulcineia rise up in a love song, celebrating the dream and adventure of eternal lovers. The beauty of the woman and her nakedness are visualized in the crystalline beauty of the poetry of Camilo Pessanha or Adalber to Alves. Natália Correia and Florbela Espanca suggest the mystery of love, embodied by the painter in his surreal and baroque way of expressing himself ”. However, if Figueiredo Sobral began as a painter who also sculpted, he soon became a sculptor who painted. Dissatisfied with the virtual nature of the perspective technique, he seeks to add a third real dimension to his paintings, introducing embossment to them. Hence the multitude of faces that inhabit his canvases, sleepwalkers from a dreamed beyond who mysteriously gaze at us with an unspeakable message that is imprisoned by his lips. (...) The mystery of the characters who, almost obsessively, populate the Master’s canvases, when they come to the surface of the canvas, seem only an attempt to say: what is life but a dream?”. “In fact, Mestre Figueiredo Sobral is an incessant seeker of materials and forms in order to give meaning to his aesthetic universe as an anchor of the modern discourse. Whether using his technique of embossing, cultivated since the 1960s, carved in bulk in a compromise between painting and sculpture of surreal inspiration or a fantastic realism, or expressing himself in the simple lines of soft colors of his dreamlike watercolors or materializing pastel in the sphingique creation of the doll, in its eternal feminine, or in cosmic visions, Mestre Figueiredo Sobral configures his work of the utmost quality in the rigour and search for the surprising and unpredictable. The same work and creativity are projected in the sculpture that deserves a separate place in his work and in the history of Portuguese sculpture. “ Loaded with matter, organized according to different orders, the works of Mestre Figueiredo Sobral differ from each other and they invite us to appreciate these differences. Painter and Sculptor, who all these years turned exclusively to his own ART, hence the technical mastery, the refinement extracted in the continuous act of painting and sculpting. Analysis, reflection, method, system, are allied as a fusion, with matter, form, colour and light. Figueiredo Sobral shows us (...) his constant evolution, his search without fatigue, which makes of each moment an unpredictable reincarnation, a conquest, an enrichment. Biography

José Maria Figueiredo Sobral was born in Lisbon in 1926. He studied graphic arts at António Arroio Secondary School (Escola Secundária Artística António Arroio), with Lino António, Paula Campos and Rodrigues Alves. Sobral worked in a wide range of mediums, including painting, graphic design, illustration, scenography and poetry. His first paintings were first publicly exhibited at the General Exhibitions of Fine Arts, in the National Society of Fine Arts, in Lisbon, immediately after the Second World War in the 1940s. He informally joined the Portuguese surrealist group, formed by António Maria Lisboa, Mário Cesariny. and Cruzeiro Seixas, among other artists. His first solo exhibition was in Castelo de Vide, in 1952. From then on, his work was exhibited in several individual and collective exhibitions. Until the end of the 50’s, Figueiredo Sobral worked in creative advertising and graphic illustration. He also wrote poetry and theatre, and worked as a designer. He was a critic of the regime of António de Oliveira Salazar, having been detained several times for political reasons. He resumed his work in sculpture in the 1960s, and then in ceramics. In 1970 he began collaborating in the manufacture of tapestries with the Portalegre Tapestries Factory. He was co-founder of the publisher Minotauro with Urbano Tavares Rodrigues, a company that published the magazine of the same name. In 1975 he moved to Americana, São Paulo, where he created a sculpture for the entrance to the city at the invitation of the former Mayor, Ralph Biasi. Figueiredo Sobral died on August 13, 2010, in Lisbon, at the age of 85. His monumental sculptures and wall paintings are installed in urban public spaces in Brazil and Portugal. His work is represented in the Boston Museum, The Art World Gallery, Michigan, Interart Gallery, Miami, and in private collections in Portugal, Antwerp, Brussels, Paris, Toulon, São Paulo and Chicago. His work has been included, since 2014, in the Lusophony Collection of Casa da Liberdade - Mário Cesariny and Perve Galeria, and was shown in that context at the 1st Art Biennial of Vila Nova de Gaia and in Turkey, in Istanbul and Ankara, among other locations.
