Unique Rarities: The Special Exhibition of the Danish West Indies

N

ordia 2017 marks the 100th Anniversary of the sale of the Danish West Indies to US with the largest special exhibition to date with almost 100 frames with the very best of the philatelic objects known. You can experience several exhibits in the completion classes but also a number of invited exhibits will give our guests a unique view of the islands history. We also proudly present some remarkable exhib-its from the Danish Postal Museum (Enigma) including the outstanding DWI exhibit originating with G. A. Hagemann, RDP FRPSL (1877-1971), and the International Large Gold exhibit originating with Dr. Torben Geill (1896 -1989). G. A. Hagemanns early studies of the Danish bicoloured stamps and The Danish West Indies is still famous to all collectors of these areas, and he has been called the Philatelist of the Century. Furthermore we present the collection of proofs and essays from DWI. These contain original drawings, preparatory studies, proofs, colour trials and printings of outer frames, central images (in intaglio), and complete sheets (perforate and imperforate) from the St. Thomas Harbour issue of 1905. And finally the 3 cent and 7 cent bicoloured issue of 1873 in complete imperforate proof double sheets. One sheet is printed on one side and the other is printed on both sides. These unique objects have never been shown outside The Danish Postal Museum. In addition to this we present a minor exhibition from a local pharmacy, St Thomas Apotek, with original fixtures from the only remaining pharmacy from the DWI. Danish West Indies Society will also participate with their travelling exhibition regarding the history of the DWI. Mossgreen Auctions from Australia will participate and have viewing of lots from the famous Swedish-born “Hans von Strokirch collection, which will be on their auction later this year. Also the Danish Auctions-house Bruun-Rasmussen has viewing of extraordinary DWI items for a later auction.and also Frank Banke Philatelist amongst others will bring a large number of better DWI objects.

Nordia’s Polar Salon Hal Vogel

(4th International Polar Philatelic Exhibition)

« Polar Salon » (an international polar philatelic exhibition) is held every few years at various international sites. The fourth « Polar Salon » held in 2017 is being held in conjunction with NORDIA in Denmark.

1. What is « Polar Salon » and what can visitors expect to see in the exhibition devoted to Polar Philately?

Polar philately consists of philatelic material with a polar (Arctic/Antarctic) character. It has been an organized international philatelic activity since the mid-1950’s. Seeing a broad display of material in this

12 September 1871 Stockholm, Sweden, dispatch to Dr. Carl Wyström aboard Ingegerd by someone wishing to communicate with the scientist as he was returning from the single season Swedish naval Greenland geological expedition that also had supported Adolf E. Nordenskiöld’s 1870-71 expedition.

[18]

field should interest those currently involved in polar philately and those with a curiosity or developing interest in polar philately. The field at first can appear daunting to those unfamiliar with its major areas. This is because it encompasses so much (expeditions of all sorts, parts of aerophilately, sections of military postal history, thematics [polar oriented subjects] and geographics [traditional philately from sites in the polar regions]). Visitors will see exhibits from within these five major categories that will help them better understand and enjoy this field’s wealth of philately. Attendees also will be able to have another advantage, since they will

be able to take pleasure in seeing at one location the full range of its material from the classics and earliest examples to clever and interesting presentations of polar topics with contemporary items. Many should find exhibits that interest them, as well as types and categories of material that they may never have regarded before as either “polar” or accessible. Of course, being part of a world class philatelic exhibition, it also will have those premier examples from polar philately that should tantalize everyone who views them. This is an uncommon opportunity to view a variety of extraordinary polar material at a single venue.

2. What is the link between the Polar Philately exhibition and NORDIA?

International polar philatelic exhibitions are held regularly in various countries that normally have some polar activities association. Previously, for example, they were held in France, Germany and Monaco. These are countries with a strong polar expeditionary history. Denmark, of course, also has a strong association with polar activities and one of the polar region’s major geographic entities (Greenland). Other Nordic countries also have a vivid polar presence both now and in the past. Scandinavian countries have more of a polar heritage, since many have at least a portion of their area that is decidedly « polar. »

3. What are the highlights of the Polar Philately exhibition?

There will be polar philatelic exhibits of extraordinary material comparable to the most exciting items found in general philately. A number of exhibits will have one-of-a-kind items, as well as those with significant coverage of a subject that may not have any rivals, due to scarcity of the material. Some of the more notable polar exhibits include, but are not limited to: - Mail documenting the earliest French and German Antarctic expeditions (early 20th C.). - The only known mail from the first Antarctic expedition (Belgian) to winter in the Antarctic (late 19th C.). - Earliest known Greenland material (18th C.). - Material that documents the earliest transit of the Northwest Passage (mid19th C.). There also will be exhibits with more accessible material that present their subjects in a manner that allows them also to be greatly admired and appreciated for how well they display their subjects.

4. Why is Polar Philately such a fascinating subject?

This is one of those unfathomable questions that has been asked for as long as people have been drawn to the polar regions and its philately. One category of its material is described as “archival,” and also can be found in some other fields of philately where it also has great attraction. These are items imbued [19]

Fig,. 2/2a: 13 August 1928, Copenhagen with Greenland origination markings (written date 9 July 1928) from Alf Killerich to Aarhus, Denmark, from aboard the Danish research vessel Godthaab, while serving on this scientific cruise off West Greenland as a hydrographer and photographer.

[20]

with history (in this case, polar history) that you might expect to find in museums and archives as would be an important historical artifact. Adding the nature of the material’s association (i.e., an important polar activity) gives these items an attraction beyond what can be found in their basic postal nature. Even modern polar philatelic material has an added sense of fascination, since it too has been in the polar regions. There is a sense of fascination associated with events in the polar regions that tends to be very inviting to many. To some it may be the added sense of physical and emotional hazard due to the very challenging environment. However, many simply are drawn to its beauty and character without any care as to why. Explorer and first to the North Pole, Robert E. Peary, when asked over 100-years ago why he continues to explore in the High Arctic, replied that he had contracted “Arctic Fever.” Substituting “polar” (Arctic and Antarctic) for just «Arctic» would make it the pleasant “affliction” of many in polar philately. In terms of its philatelic material, it has some aspects that make it one of the few types of philately that

has some areas that cannot have a catalogue or ready reference of all that might exist. Besides the existing one-of-a-kinds, there are new discoveries (especially of early polar expedition postal history) made every year. In some cases, expeditions (exploratory and scientific expeditions are at the heart of polar philately, though not its entire corpus) would be unknown today, were it not for their philatelic finds. So just as existence in the polar regions can be challenging, so can be pursuit of much of its philatelic material. This also can be very attractive to those who seek an added flair to their philately.

5. What special showing is the «Polar Salon» featuring?

Since this year’s NORDIA is honoring « Greenland, », the Polar Salon’s organizers wished to join with our hosts in supporting this theme by having the first multiframe exhibit emphasizing Pioneer Period scientific and exploratory expeditions to Greenland. This will be the first time that any international exhibit features material from expeditions to Greenland that emphasizes those from the Pioneer Period (pre1954), especially from the 19th and early 20th Centuries. The two illustrations with this article demonstrate examples of what can be seen in this exhibit, but they are NOT in this featured Greenland expeditions display. They are comparable to what is in the exhibit and give us an additional opportunity to see what sort of extraordinary and interesting material can exist in such a presentation.

Catalogue It is worthwhile to look forward to the Exhibition Catalogue with a series of interesting articles on Vejle, The Danish West Indies, an article on Byrd’s transatlantic flight, Richard Wagner, modern philately - just to mention some of the ten articles on the 124 pages. A must for your philatelic library, and one of the best souvenirs you can get from this memorable event. Sold at the incredibly low price of 30 DKR.
