Naklua 'Walking Street' Project
25 BAHT
to open on 21st November
After months of speculation a press conference was held on the 10th November at Pattaya City Hall to officially announce the opening date for the new ‘Naklua Walking Street’ Project, that will help to revitalise one of Pattaya’s oldest areas. The meeting was jointly chaired by Pattaya’s Mayor, Khun Itthiphol Khunplome, his Honorary Advisor, Khun Niran Wattanasartsatorn, and the Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TOT), Khun Nitti Kongkrut. Over the past few months many buildings and sites have received important changes to update them for the commencement of this new project. The new ‘Naklua Walking Street’ will be held every Saturday and Sunday from 4.00pm to 10.00pm, commencing on the 21st November and running until the 7th February 2010, when a decision will be taken on its success in bringing much needed tourists, and more importantly their money, into this struggling area. Pattaya City Hall is confident that the Naklua Walking Street
project will become one of the main tourist attractions in the city, and with Pattaya‘s increasing popularity as an international tourist centre, it has gained the title of the ‘Asian Riviera’. The new project will take place on Pattaya’s first commercial road, at the heart of one of the city’s oldest communities, in the area from the Suporn gold shop to Soi Columbia. The market will feature the selling of fresh and dry foods, as well as ready cooked meals and an abundance of gifts to encourage local residents,
visiting nationals and international tourists. The market project will become the hub of the Naklua Community with many activities arranged for the children and young people of the area, together with concerts, performing arts and amateur dramatics for the local residents and visiting tourists. The market will also look at educating local residents on the world environment, and will publicise the dangers of drugs, energy saving, reducing pollution and preserving our eco system. Honorary Advisor to the Mayor, Khun Niran
Wattanasartsatorn, explained to the press conference that the Naklua sub-district of Pattaya City covers an area which includes seven villages, including Koh Larn Island, and although it was one of the first established areas in the City, it has over the years, because of the lack of sufficient funding, fallen behind other Pattaya areas in the quest to attract the millions of tourists who pour into the city each year. Mayor Itthiphol Khunplome stated that Pattaya City Hall are very conscious that many local residents of the Naklua area have been forced to relocate as there
was no possibility of earning a living in the immediate are, however, he firmly believes that the new venture will bring much needed employment to the area. Continued on page 6
