Will Pattaya Get a New Garbage Power Plant?

Pattaya Mayor, Khun Itthiphol Khunplome, recently enjoyed what turned out to be an interesting meeting with representatives of the Provincial Electricity Authority, on the subject of producing cheaper electricity. The Provincial Electricity Authority suggested a proposal for turning the tonnes of waste created in Pattaya into electricity. They explained to the Mayor that at present a very small percentage of the waste created is recycled. They estimate, that after recycling,

the remaining garbage could produce around 200-300 mega watts of electricity, this would ease the burden on the Kingdom for being reliant on the importation of fuels to create the power. Deputy Director of the PEA, Khun Pasorn Wiangket, stated that the

PEA, are at present selecting an appropriate site where in excess of 100 tons of garbage is available on a daily basis. The company is aware that nobody wants the site near to their home, and the company are doing everything within their power to affect the least amount of residents. They realise that Pattaya is a tourist destination; any plant would need to be away from tourist areas. The Mayor was very interested in the discussions,

as Pattaya would be a superb location, already producing in excess of 350 tons of garbage every day. Both sides are looking forward to the next meeting when the proposal can be explored further. Already this year staff from Pattaya City Hall have visited Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and China in endeavours to discover more information on the foreign administrative arrangements for garbage disposal. With the hope that other

administrations around the world can give insight into the best method of waste disposal. The new power plant will be a joint venture between the Chonburi Provincial Office and the Chonburi Local Organisation Office Region 3, which includes coverage of Banglamung, Sattahip and Pattaya. The authorities have already promised investment in excess of 3 billion baht. The previous arrangements for the disposal of Pattaya waste, has not gone smoothly and an alternative method is desperately required.
