MUCH relieved Pattaya police called an urgent press conference on October 28 to announce that one member of a mainland Chinese gang, who had broken into hotel guests' room safes over 30 times, had been arrested. Investigators acting on a tip-off had gone to the Green Park Resort in north Pattaya where Mr Liu Hua Rong, aged 30, was arrested.
He agreed that he and three other gang members (two Chinese men and a Chinese woman) had broken into the hotel rooms of dozens of guests in the resort and opened their wall safes. The modus operandi was that the female gang member, Ms Lee Fang aged 39, would walk into a classy hotel and book a room for the night. Later, her partners in
crime would join her to assemble a small CCTV camera in the corridor where they could watch the movements of other guests. The group would then choose a wealthy looking victim and wait for him or her to go out. They would then enter the room with a skeleton key or fake entry card and descend on the wall safe which they could open in 45 seconds using the latest sensor and computer tech-
nology. It was only when the legitimate owner of the room opened the wall safe that the theft would be discovered. By then the criminals had absconded. Pattaya police had earlier compiled a compendium of wall safe crimes and were sure that they were all the work of one group. Several hotels had been chosen for the hi tech crime and some individuals had lost the equivalent of thousands of US dollars, credit cards and important documents. Continued on page 4
