Hotel occupancy best in years But tourist profile is changing L

ove it or hate it, the 2013 Songkran water-festivities have seen Pattaya hotels fuller than at any time since the heady days of the 1990s. It’s a similar story in other Thai beach resorts including Koh Samui and Phuket.

Surapong Techaruvichit, president of the Thai Hotels Association, said the generally peaceful atmosphere in the country was responsible for the hotel occupancy rate reaching over 90 percent. He denied that the appreciation of the baht had made much difference as currencies throughout Southeast Asia have been marching in the same direction.

Rooms are selling fast on the continuing recovery in foreign tourist arrivals. In March, arrivals surged 20 percent at Thai airports and border crossings year-on-year, making it highly likely that more than 25 million foreigners will visit the country during this calendar year. About one third of all foreign tourists visit Pattaya

on average for four or five nights, spending an average of 3,000 baht per day.

Nonetheless the visitor profile is changing. A recent survey of Walking Street, Pattaya’s most popular night-time entertainment district, showed that Russian, Middle East and Chinese visitors now outnumber western Europeans, Australians and Americans. Aware of the trend, the Foreign Tourist Police Assistants are actively trying to recruit more speakers of Russian and Asian languages.

The hotel industry, meanwhile, is facing a shortage of skilled labour, especially housekeepers and receptionists to serve the growing demand. Wages are rising in accordance with market forces. “We can no longer pay the minimum wage. Even manual workers and those working in four- star hotels now receive a minimum of 10,000 baht monthly,” according to a source at one of Pattaya’s most exclusive resorts.

News Serious damage in condo fire

Fire trucks responded to the 22-storey Royal Cliff Garden Resort when smoke was reported coming out of a 21st floor unit. Condo owner John Owen, a New Zealand citizen, said that the fire started in his bedroom.

His two sons were sleeping in a second bedroom. Total damage was estimated at more than one million baht.

One theory is that the conflagration occurred after a lit cigarette was ignored, although investigations are continuing to check for other possible explanations.

Motorbike thieves idled

Nongprue police have arrested five suspected members of a motorbike theft gang and confiscated nine stolen bikes, various spare parts and a collection of illegal methamphetamine tablets.

All of the gang members reportedly pleaded guilty. However, the gang ringleader, known as Thanasak, escaped the police dragnet and is being hunted down.

TT&T suffers explosion

Two fire trucks were dispatched when smoke was seen coming from the four-storey TT&T building on Soi Khaonoi.

A motorbike taxi driver said that she was waiting for customers when she heard a succession of bangs. Fire specialists noted that there were eight large batteries on the building’s roof and suggested that the recent hot weather had caused them to overcharge and subsequently explode. The fire was quickly extinguished but the building had to be temporarily closed.

Slot machines seized in raid

Police impounded 10 slot machines and arrested their owner, Chen Yi Wien. The man was charged with organizing an unlawful lottery. The Soi 7 game shop was contravening the law by making available slot machines which enabled winning punters to exchange tokens for cash, which is illegal in Thailand. An undercover policeman discovered the operation and busted the owner, several patrons and staff—taking the lot to the police station. An employee said nobody had the faintest idea that the harmless games could result in prosecution.

Rayong transforms public transit Rayong’s five-year-old fleet of motorised streetcars in Klaeng municipality will be transformed into a real railbased system in the next three years. The cars, which run on liquefied petroleum gas, are popular with tourists and locals alike. Several routes carry about 450 passengers daily.

The idea of streetcars is spreading to other provinces including Nakhon Ratchasima and Ayutthaya, but not to traffic-gridlocked Pattaya, which is said to be unsuitable without a major infrastructure investment.

News Centara Hotels & Resorts names Brulhart area GM Thirayuth Chirathivat, chief executive officer of Centara Hotels & Resorts, reports that Andre Brulhart has been promoted to area general manager and will remain general manager of Centara Grand Mirage Beach Resort Pattaya. He also will oversee the new Centara Grand Modus Resort & Spa Pattaya, which will open in the third quarter of this year.

Brulhart, a Swiss national and a graduate of the Lausanne Hotel Management School in Switzer-

land, has more than 30 years’ hotel experience in Europe, USA and mainly in Asia. Beginning his career at the Hong Kong Hilton, Brulhart has also held positions at the Kahala Hilton, The Regent Bangkok, Sofitel Metropole Hanoi, and The Plaza Athenee Bangkok.

He joined Centara Hotels in 2005 as resident manager, Centara Grand at Central Plaza Ladprao Bangkok, then was GM, Centara Karon Resort Phuket before coming to Pattaya.

Best Hospital Executives Award Dr. Pichit Kangwolkij, deputy CEO – Group 3 and hospital director of Bangkok Hospital Pattaya, was presented with the Best Hospital Executives award by the Thailand Hospital Administrator Association. News Thailand finally getting it right - maybe The government proposal that traffic switch to driving on the right side of the road instead of the left has sparked controversy in the Kingdom. The suggestion, coming from the Public Works Department, will be introduced to Parliament in June. If enacted, the mammoth changeover will be effective in January.

Tongchai Matchamonton, spokesman for the Department, said that the move would prepare Thailand for ASEAN as most of the 10 member states drive on the right. This is true also of China with whom ASEAN members are planning to cooperate in huge transport initiatives and building programmes.

One of the negative factors in the equation is the recent instruction from the Royal Thai Police to close all bars in the main entertainment areas by 2 a.m. and those in the suburbs by midnight. “It’s ridiculous to expect a party city like Pattaya to have these restrictive licensing rules,” said Dave Broughton, a UK expat, with a substantial stake in nightclubs.

“Time and time again we have lobbied for a 24 hour licensing situation in Pattaya, just like in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap in Cambodia, but our pleas are ignored,” he added.

But other bar owners see a subtle change in tourist behavior. “Going out to the bars and clubs is very much a western thing to do,” said the owner of a Pattaya mini-mart, “but the new generation of Russians and Asians often prefer to buy their booze in shops and convenience stores and enjoy themselves back in their hotel rooms.”

She added that many new-generation tourists liked to visit the best known entertainment districts but did not necessarily spend heavily there.

Tongchai said, “Already Thailand is planning its rail transport to have the same gauge as neighboring countries. Driving on the right is the next logical step in order for Thailand to become the transport hub for Asia.” He added that people would be given ample notice and that he did not expect the change-over would result in many more accidents.

Indeed, he argued that many tourists were killed in crashes precisely because Thailand was out of step with most of the world as regards left and right on the roads.

Pratumnak office burgled yet again

Furthermore, establishments were instructed to use the latest technology and to ensure that CCTVs were in working order.

More than three million baht in property was stolen from the newly-opened Hop On Hop Off offices on Pratumnak Road, according to Frederick Mitchel, owner of the tour company.

The Canadian national said that he returned from an evening out to find that the four-storey building in South Pattaya had been ransacked and foreign currency and luxury items stolen.

Investigators could not immediately find any forensic evidence.

They said their records showed that these same premises had been targeted by thieves on five previous occasions.

German tourist in death leap

Sawangboriboon volunteers and a Pattaya Memorial Hospital team rushed to Central Festival Pattaya Beach after learning that German national Christian Klaski had climbed over a rail on the fifth floor and jumped to the ground. He died later in hospital having sustained serious head injuries. A security guard alerted police. The 34-year-old victim was identified from a police report in his possession concerning a lost passport.

Following an ammonia leak at an ice factory in Pornprapanimit 8, Nongprue, many villagers complained about the burning to their faces. Mai Chaiyanit, mayor of Nongprue, admitted that the leaks had occurred before and said that the factory might need to be closed permanently if warnings went unheeded.

More raids on Walking Street In the ongoing crackdown on drugs, more than 100 Thai customers in two Bali Hai clubs provided police with urine samples to test them for drugs. The two separate raids nailed three men and five women who tested positive; they were transported to a hospital for another examination. Police apologized to foreign customers for the inconvenience and exempted them from the tests. The licences of the two establishments were also examined and found to be in good order.

Thief and would-be rapist escapes Police rushed to a dental clinic in Nongprue sub-district responding to calls that a robber had terrorized a family before escaping across the roof with a haul of 9,000 baht. Sittan Tongbai, owner of the three-storey building, said that he was asleep on the third floor when he heard calls for help from the floor below where his son, his wife’s sister, Sompit Suporn, and two children were asleep. Sompit said she was awakened by noises in

the room and switched on the light to discover a burglary in progress. The robber threatened her with a screwdriver, demanding that she hand over cash and her wallet. He then made an unsuccessful attempt to rape Sompit and stabbed her in the arm with a pair of scissors before making his escape. Police said that the robber had entered the premises through a window on the roof which was close to adjoining buildings.

Big C Supercenter Plc this year will invest 8 billion baht opening 200 stores--big and small—and building two distribution centres impervious to flooding. Thus, by year’s end Thailand will be home to 119 hypermarkets, 31 Big C locations, 275 mini-marts and 140 Pure drug stores. The company said its minimarts will include more facilities at petrol stations. Preparing to benefit from more purchasing power among Asian tourists with the onset of the ASEAN Economic Community, Big C will have 1,250 stores in operation by 2016.

The Bridges of Hope gives information and offers advice to local job seekers as well as providing medical assistance to worthy cases.

National Museum Volunteers now in Pattaya The National Museum Volunteers (NMV) has created a branch in Pattaya that will provide the opportunity to study the art, history and culture of Thailand and its neighbors through lectures, workshops, excursions, and study groups.

NMV, a non-profit organization which has served the National Museum Bangkok since 1969, began its work here last year. The first activities organized by long-time NMV Bangkok members Victoria Kudriaseva and Margot Weinmann—Pattaya residents--were a lecture to the Pattaya International Ladies Club, and the formation of a small study group which researched

Thai culture and made a presentation to their fellow researchers. NMV-Pattaya has grown from five to 23 members in the past year.

This year NMV plans a lecture series beginning this month and a study group in late May; everyone is welcome to participate.

NMV, under the auspices of the Fine Arts Department of the National Museum, is meant to serve the National Museum in Bangkok and the public through activities that promote Thai arts, culture and heritage.

Good Samaritan returns nearly 200,000 baht Honesty is not entirely a forgotten word in today’s cynical world. Thaveesak Phanwilai, 43, found a wallet containing nearly 200,000 baht and returned it to its rightful owner.

The meat vendor came across the lost item at the Nong Yai railway junction. When he looked inside, he discovered 90,000 baht in cash and a cashier’s check in the amount of 106,000 baht. After discussing his options with his

wife, Thaveesak contacted Sophon Cable TV to help locate the owner. Reuangsak Deboonchai, the 50-year-old owner of a rice shop, had already notified police that he had lost the wallet and funds.

He reclaimed his valuables at a ceremony organized by the cable company. Police said they would award an Outstanding Citizen Certificate to Thaveesak, whilst Reuangsak provided a financial re-

ward. For his part, Thaveesak said he could never be happy using someone else’s money; Reuangsak said the money, which must have fallen out of his pocket, was badly needed to feed a hungry family (presumably his). Major General Katcha Thartsart, police commander, pointed out that the incident was a good for Pattaya tourism as it reflected there are still some good people around town.

News Emergency cover for Songkran The Bangkok Hospital Pattaya prepared for the annual water-throwing with teams of doctors, nurses and a 24-hour standby ambulance. First aid training was also set up with Banglamung police station and the Sawangboriboon Foundation. Over one hundred hours of medical training have been completed so that hospital staff and volunteers are prepared to meet any contingency. Local police stated that road checkpoints and resuscitation centres would be operational throughout the holiday period.

Police nationally have stated that this year local authorities in tourist areas such as Pattaya must enforce much stricter regulations than in the past. It is forbidden to throw water from pick-up vehicles and the largest type of water cannons

are prohibited. Certain areas of the city are supposed to be earmarked as no booze and no traffic enclaves.

However, Pattaya police station was unable to specify exactly which parts of the city would be included when contacted at press time.

The best advice is to enjoy Songkran – or leave the country if preferred – but to avoid alcohol and to

remember that most fatal accidents at this time of the year are drinkinduced. Pattaya tourist police have added that drunken behavior and use of large water pistols on Walking Street will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Water throwing will be particularly prevalent in Naklua on its special day, Thursday April 18, and in Pattaya on Friday April 19.

Phalang Chon Party appoints board

Phalang Chon (We Love Chonburi Party) met at the Tide Resort in Chonburi to confirm its newly-appointed leader Sontaya Kunplume and to name new board members. Sontaya said that the party is expanding its base in Chonburi province and beyond and wants to

attract new grass-roots members. He added that this was very important as the Eastern Seaboard is developing fast with the expansion of U Tapao airport, more motorways and the prospect of hi-speed trains in the near future.

Sanctuary of Truth plans for Songkran The Sanctuary of Truth has issued its plan of events for the Songkran festival. Events will be separated into four zones, namely the watering of the wooden Buddha, Thai traditional games, building a sand pagoda and watering Buddha relics.

Thai passport office for Pattaya An official passport office for Thai nationals is set to open at The Avenue in June. Sasiwimon Prammanee, manager of the shopping complex on Second Road, said that the new service facility will encompass 300 square meters within the mall. The office currently is being decorated. Until now, Thais in the Pattaya area have been forced to travel to Bang Na, Bangkok--the nearest point for obtaining or renewing a Thai passport. A Department of Consular Affairs spokesman said the Pattaya initiative had been under review for several years owing to the growth of the Eastern Seaboard city which had led to many more Thai men and women living locally.

Interview with

John Burgess

Author of A Woman of Angkor

“Angkor is in the heart of every Cambodian,” says John Burgess.

It is also in the heart, it seems, of this former Washington Post correspondent. Burgess’ first fictional novel, A Woman of Angkor, tells the story of a regular family living in Angkor approximately 900 years ago, during the period in which the now famous temple of Angkor Wat was built. The protagonist, Sray, is a physically beautiful woman who is internally tortured by a mysterious secret from her past. Trying to capture the thoughts and mindset of people living so long ago seems like a daunting prospect, but Burgess downplays the difficulties.

“The first thing you do is build on the historical record, what we know about that civilisation. You take that historical basis and you try to build on it with some imagination,” Burgess says of the process. “You do that in part by trying to look at what life is like today in Cambodia and in Thailand, those areas that were part of the Khmer empire. We know that the Khmer empire was very influential moving forward to today’s society, and you can make an educated guess that some of the sort of attitudes and world views that people had then are not so different from ones people have today.

“The other thing is,” he continues,

“we’re all human beings...there are some of us who are ambitious, some of us who are passive...I think the basic human condition is not that different today from 900 years ago.”

Burgess’ fascination with Cambodia dates back to 1969, when he first visited the country and fell in love with it. He returned to the region in 1971 to take a job at Bangkok World, an English-language newspaper, and remained in Asia for the following nine years. In 1979 he covered the exodus of Cambodian refugees after the fall of the Khmer Rouge. “Witnessing this first hand had an impact on me that I’ll never forget,” Burgess says. During this

Burgess returned to the US in 1980, where he landed a job at the Washington Post, and he spent the next couple of decades working for the paper in Washington, Japan and Korea. It was in 2002, when Burgess and his wife decided to take their two daughters on a family holiday to Cambodia, that his passion for Khmer culture was reignited. Throughout the next year, Burgess researched the history of the Khmer Kingdom and

in 2003 he started writing A Woman of Angkor. Burgess retired from the Washington Post in 2008.

When asked what it is he loves about Angkor, Burgess says he is “attracted by the physical beauty of what they created”.

“You think they had so little.”

He continues, “But what was this incredible religious faith ... that was driving them, through each generation, to build something so huge and so beautiful.”

Magnolia is a large genus of about 210 flowering plant species in the subfamily Magnolioideae of the family Magnoliaceae. It is named after French botanist Pierre Magnol.

Khao Yai, in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, is just 220km or 2.5 hours drive northeast from Bangkok.

Two decades ago, Khao Yai high plateau was known for its national park: it was a spot for boy scouts and nature lovers, with tents for rent, campfires, bird watching, elephant spotting and stargazing. It was no lifestyle destination; there were only a handful of 3-star resorts back then, consisting of al fresco roadside log house establishments serving succulent pork leg, super hot som tam and local Singha beer. Hotel California was the ubiquitous soundtrack, ad nauseam.

Jump forward to the 13th year of the new century, the year of the snake in the Chinese zodiac, and Khao Yai is undergoing intense development.

Today in Khao Yai there’s everything (except Starbucks) from agro-tourism, world-class golf courses and elegant, outdoor Tuscan restaurants serving French wine and Belgian beer. There are no less than three local vineyards, exquisite hotels and boutique resorts and, of course, shopping-including Italian-themed al fresco malls with pink clock towers and piazzas boasting names like Palio. The latter is an enclave that has charmingly been designed, right down the minor details, to

resemble a small Tuscan town. For the kids there’s plenty to do, including a visit to the American cowboythemed Farm Chokchai, an exciting cattle ranch.

Flare New menu is Thai-tastic!

Raise your eyes skywards over Central Festival Pattaya Beach and there ascending 34 levels into the heavens is sited the most futuristically designed hotel to enter Pattaya’s hospitality destinations.

This ritzy 5-star hotel has now firmly established its reputation, not only for the ultimate in hotel hospitality but also for their bevy of restaurants offering top-notch cuisine, on trend bars and of course their bargain deluxe buffets.

The hospitality team at the Hilton Pattaya is constantly pushing the envelope to offer innovative and desirous culinary events to please their old friends and to attract new ones. With this creative spirit to the fore the menu at their signature Flare restaurant has been totally transformed. Chef Maytee has dug deep into his traditional roots to produce a menu of “resurgence”

Thai cuisine reintroducing the flavours and ingredients of days of yesteryear.

Philippe Kronberg, general manager of Hilton Pattaya, explained the rationale behind the new menu saying, “Thailand is home to some of the finest dishes in the world and we believe in showcasing the best of what this country has to offer to both our domestic and international guests. I am confident that our diners will truly enjoy this authentic menu which has been given a contemporary twist.”

Mick and I were invited to sample the new menu and that is how we found ourselves meandering through the minimalist décor of this stunning hotel. Hand blown glass orbs and artisan designed cages spectacularly lead into their flagship fine dining restaurant, Flare. The lighting is soft and flattering the ambiance opulent bedecked in gossamer, it is serene, sensuous and gorgeous.

The menu is indeed traditionally inspired with rural overtones but

with chef’s predilection for the finest global ingredients, it is served with the many superior elements that factor into the gourmet Flare kitchen. We commenced our dinner with an assortment of spring rolls the likes of tuna and seaweed, prawn and vegetarian (B.350). Crisp little treats all served with a trio of dipping sauces. This was swiftly followed by a big favourite dish of ours, but one we hadn’t spotted on any menu for quite a while – yum pla foo (B.350). The quotidian dish is made from catfish but here the kitchen uses prime sea bass fried to fluffiness and mixed with shrimp popcorn, green mango and a spicy, tamarind/lime dressing.

Delicious.

Next up was a sweet clam curry with betel leaves (kaeng hoy waan bai chaplu). No allowances here for the farang palate! – it zinged with chili heat, the woody nutritious flavour of the pak wan adding a distinctive element when blended with the sweet fishy clams. Bamboo fish (B.650) was the next dish to hit the table and what an eye pleaser that proved. Spectacularly served in a bamboo case, the grilled fillet of sea bass had been marinated with special herbs and came accompanied by a

selection of chili dips. A wonderful recipe bursting with tastes of the field and briny ocean. The final savoury dish to be presented was gaeng hed (spicy mushroom and salted fish broth with snake gourd, pumpkin, basil and ya nang leaf). A jungly mix of vegetables adeptly combined with a forager’s basket of herbs in a saline fish broth. It sang with gourmet reminiscences of “ahaan boran” (ancient food) and we loved every spoonful.

Other dishes on the menu include an Australian beef massaman curry (B.550), sun-dried Kurobuta pork and palm heart salad, roasted duck in red curry with cherry tomatoes and

lychees and many more. Specialities of the house offer black crab, Maine lobster, tiger prawns, Australian strip loin beef or corn fed chicken, which can all be prepared to your individual taste baked in a clay pot, grilled, stir fried, deep fried.

Paired with our Thai dinner we were served wine from the distinguished Granmonte Asok vineyard in Khao Yai. The first pouring was a Chenin Blanc, which with its fruity and floral overtones ably escorted our first dishes. The second pouring was an elegant Heritage Syrah 2011 which again proved an excellent companion to the intense, robust flavours of the Thai curries.

Dining at Flare is a joy from the moment you step into its sensual space and take pleasure in the pampering environment. Prices here reflect the sophistication of the 5-star locale and the cuisine but, having said that, the experience rewards accordingly and the dishes are amazingly good. For a luxury culinary event it would be hard to beat Flare at the Hilton Pattaya.

Pakarung Beach Front Bar & Restaurant On Na Jomtien’s Golden Beach Golden Beach is the hidden jewel of Na Jomtien and here, amid swaying palm trees, a long stretch of honey blonde sand and a sky blue sea is located the latest hip new Thai restaurant in the area. Serving the freshest seafood, their signature cocktails and the very best of Thai traditional cuisine, it is indeed a charming venue.

Only 20 minutes from Pattaya, you’ll think you are ensconced on some tropical island the ambiance here is so idyllic. This striking new rotunda-designed building is the inspiration of its owner/entrepreneur, Apirat Palankrun, and run by the highly qualified general manager, Somboon (Rung) Panyathi, who makes it a real pleasure to visit this life style destination.

The stars were shining the night Mick and I visited and, after being greeted by Rung, we surveyed the scene. Seating is either on the spacious deck overlooking the beach or directly on the sand under the lantern-lit palm trees on cozy rattan

sofas providing sinking comfort beside the sea shore. My recent foot injury prevented us from walking down to the beach so we settled ourselves on the terrace and enjoyed

the privileged nightscape of this gorgeous beach.

The bar serves a wide range of tropical cocktails as well as spirits, wines and beers. A Chang beer promotion is running at the moment offering four big bottles for B.349 or three small ones for only B.179. The menu is an example of authentic time-honoured Thai recipes with special emphasis on local seafood.

Our dinner set off charmingly with a couple of spicy salads; the combination salad with crispy squid rings and the som tum pla krob (spicy papaya salad with crispy fish) priced at B.199. Both dishes were sensational, singing with chili, tamarind and lime and packed with fat juicy

prawns and healthy ingredients. If you are a Thai salad fan, other options would be spicy fried whole sea bass salad, glass noodle salad with sea food or the raw shrimp marinated with fish sauce and lime juice.

A reliable Thai gastro-meter is always the tom yum and our serving of this famous fiery soup came loaded with mixed seafood and mushrooms in a perfumed lemon grass spicy soup (B.299). Piquant, peppery flavours bursted with zesty zing igniting the palate with instant head-clearing intensity (in a good way) – it was a winner. Other hot and sour soup options include sea crab soup, mullet clear soup or steamed whole squid with spicy lemon sauce - there’s definitely a soup wizard in this kitchen. Humungous New Zealand mussels then hit the table. These big, fleshy mollusks glistened and gleamed in their tangy sauce and were truly delicious and one of our top favourites of the evening.

It was then time to enjoy the deep fried whole sea bass served with a mango spicy salad. Fried to perfection, it was soft, succulent and tasty. Stir fried sea crab with Madras curry powder is another top seller as are the mantis shrimp with garlic and pepper. Although Pakarung is predominately a Thai seafood emporium they do serve a selection of international dishes such as salmon, either smoked or a grilled

steak, spaghetti with bacon and dried chili or carbonarra and T-bone or pepper steak.

Desserts are another speciality here and we couldn’t leave without trying chef’s signature chocolate fondant. It came escorted by the creamiest of vanilla ice cream and a cloud of divine Chantilly cream.

Sheer decadence on a plate, the molten chocolate oozed seductively into the ice cream and cream to fuse together in a most sinful way.

Pakarung is an on trend beach front bar and restaurant offering Thai seafood cuisine at its best. The setting is glorious, the sea food polar fresh and professionally prepared and the staff young, enthusiastic and helpful.

Kimchee spiced Beef Yukke with egg yolk, sesame oil, wasabi sour cream, fresh currants, tsuke maki and Korean pear in lemon juice I gravitate towards ingredients that have very distinct, inimitable flavor and adding them to my dishes stamps my cuisine style a unique memorable flavor profile. Kimchee is one of those undeniably Korean gems that I cannot take out of my Asiatic pantry anymore. When someone says Korean food, you can’t help but think of kimchee. There are a lot of different types of kimchee in Korea, and on this dish, we concentrated on exploring the inspiration from those flavors. I like the play on different temperatures, different textures and different tastes within one bite and this combination is a great example of that. The spiced salinity from the kimchee sauce, sweet, crisp freshness from the pear, tartness from the currants, umami from the pickled daikon, acidity from the lemon juice, meatiness from the beef and creaminess from the yolk. Not to mention the quick and easy concoction from my mixology collection! This is so good we came up with a new word….

Spiced Lover Sochu Cucumber 1 oz Lime Juice Sriracha and kimchee sauce Scallions 2 oz Simple syrup

Hard -muddle 3 cucumber slices, scallions, simple syrup and 3 drops of sriracha/kimchee mixture and the lime juice. Add 3 oz of your favorite sochu, fill with ice and shake hard for at least 20 times.

Strain into a glass and garnish with a strip of cucumber, slice of lemon, some fresh currants and a spear of scallions.

F or the beef: 3 oz beef ribeye, cut in small strips or diced like tartare** ¼ tbsp sugar 1 tbsp light soy sauce ½ tsp sesame seeds ½ tsp sesame oil ¼ tsp kimchee sauce 1 egg yolk Salt and Pepper to taste Pink Sea salt

For garnishes

Mix the sour cream and wasabi thoroughly and add a little lemon juice. Set aside in the cooler for at least 30 minutes to let the flavor blend together.

Chill the beef in the freezer for a few minutes until firm but not frozen—this will make it easier to cut. When the right temperature is achieved, trim the edges off to make sure to avoid contamination then cut into slices about 3mm thick across the grain, then cut into strips about 3mm across and 2.5cm long. Place in a clean chilled bowl, cover with plastic and keep in the cooler until ready to serve.

Peel and core the pear and cut into matchsticks. Toss them in a little lemon juice to prevent browning especially if not serving the dish immediately.

As close as possible to the serving time, mix the beef with sugar, sesame seeds, soy sauce, pepper and finally sesame oil and kimchee sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste, Arrange the meat in a mound in the middle of a plate, then make a dip in the centre and carefully place the egg yolk in it with the pea sprouts. Spoon some of the wasabi sour cream on the plate and top it off with the micro wasabi sprouts. Add some of the Asian pear on the plate and garnish it with the tsuke maki and edible flowers. Sprinkle finishing Pink sea salt on top of the yolk.

North Korea attacks the White House

There is a long line of Hollywood movies devoted to the awful things that can befall a US President – being skyjacked, drowned by global warming, eaten alive, captured by aliens. You know the sort of thing. The new movie Olympus Has Fallen topically concerns the nastier side of Pyongyang.

A North Korean plane with sophisticated missile-deflecting shields and a group of Kim Jong-un’s finest posing as South Korean security experts create violent mayhem in and around the seat of American government.

Needless to say, there’s lots of blood, guts, disemboweled bodies and so on. The plot – if that’s the right word – centres around disgraced Secret Service Agent Mike Banning (played by Gerard Butler) as the only good American left alive after the sneaky North Korean attack. His job is to rescue the US President (Aaron Eckhart) and a whole pack of senior staffers including our old friend Morgan Freeman as the House Speaker and the acting president-in-a-crisis.

One of the irritating features is the continual showing of a wrong spelling on the screen: Whitehouse instead of White House!

Like all nasty movies this one has its moments of humor, including Abraham Lincoln killing a North Korean terrorist (actually it’s the great man’s stone bust falling on the luckless guy) and the secretary of defense being dragged away by the North Koreans even as she screams the official pledge of allegiance. There are also some redundant characters, including Banning’s wife who has nothing to do or say of the slightest consequence, except maybe kiss her husband once or twice.

The attack on the White House has been planned by hitman Kang Yeonsak whose aim is apparently to unify the two Koreas by murdering the US President and blowing up most of Washington. Of course, he fails and is eventually killed in a knife fight with the main hero. Indeed, the US President is so impressed by Banning’s performance that he reinstates him as head of the presidential security detail.

Incidentally he had lost the position in the first place when the President’s wife died in a car accident some months previously. If all this had actually occurred in practice, one can only imagine what might have happened to North Korea and the Kim family-dynasty in the fallout. Presumably everything and everybody north of the armistice line would be burnt crisps by now.

Early indications are that Olympus Has Fallen is doing well at the box office, reversing a trend whereby American disaster movies have not been pulling in the crowds.

Perhaps the secret of its success is the North Korean angle. It’s a sobering thought that Kim Jong-un’s recent sabre rattling about the United States becoming a sea of fire should have had the odd consequence of boosting Hollywood’s coffers. You just never know.

Built in Korea. Big in the States. Impressive Dynamics Honestly. I swear. My hand on my heart.

I admit that of all the Korean sedans, SUVs, luxury vans and MPV's that I have driven, Hyndai's all-new Elantra sedan tops my list. Why? Well, for starters it was named 2012 North American Car of the Year ahead of big dogs like Ford Focus and Volkswagen Passat. The “NACTOY” jury consist of more than 50 American and Canadian automotive journalists. I trust my fellow hacks and I do like the looks of the Elantra and the test drive truly impressed me.

OK! The styling. “Fluidic Sculpture”, that's what they call the Hyundai design, dudes. This is the fifth generation Elantra and the best looking so far. The madein-Southern California Hyundai design

approach spells it out: “Fluidic sculpture considers the interplay of wind with rigid surfaces to create the illusion of constant motion”.

The front stands out with a bold, entirely new designed-futuristic wrap around headlights. Side view: I especially like the pronounced shoulder-line crease that runs through the door handles and the way the rear fenders transition into the rear bumper. The posterior does look a tad BMW-esque. I dig the curl around tail-lights, too. This sedan looks stunning from any angle. The Pattaya Today demo unit is painted in cool creamy white. The “Fluidiuc sculpture” design also comes with an additional benefit of a wind cheating 0.28 drag co-efficient.

The interior trim of our top-of-theline model is in black. Quality fabric upholstery. Fine fit -and-finish including all the bells and whistles. I like the keyless entry and ignition feature. Only a green start-and-stop button. That's it. For the drivers a power seat. Other important features: USB, smart phone,

iPad connectivity and a well laid out stylish dashboard. The deep recessed gauges and meters are easy to read and to operate. A good-to-grip, leatherwrapped three-spoke multi-function steering wheel.

The wheel base has been increased to give more room and comfort for the rear passengers including armrest and cup holders.

Now. the engine room.

Open the lid. Not the lid. The hood! There's Elantra compact efficient 1.8 liter Hyundai petrol power plant providing 150 hp and 170 Nm torque.

“Why would you call your company Visa2Britain when many of your customers aren’t going to UK?” I asked Mr Chang who is the founder and owner of one of Pattaya’s best known immigration, law and visa centres with offices in Jomtien adjacent to the immigration bureau and in Pattaya next door-but-one to the main city post office.

Mr Chang (full name Jesataporn Sriboo), a young-looking Thai businessman in his late thirties with very good English, confides that his earliest venture in Pattaya was running a popular bar which was frequented mainly by British tourists and expats. “So when I decided to go into the visa business, it seemed natural to use a name including the UK.” He readily admits that the name may seem anachronistic today as Pattaya’s visitor profile has changed so much, but concludes, “The name has stuck and become very well known locally. It’s a kind of institution now so I wouldn’t want to change it.”

But why would anyone want to use a visa and immigration office?

Surely foreigners and Thais can deal with embassies and immigration authorities on their own? Mr Chang agrees they certainly can and many do. Nevertheless it is easy to go wrong. Dealing with bureaucracies can be difficult and the rules seem to keep changing all the time. There are sometimes language difficulties or confusion about which documents you actually need and whether they need to be original or photocopies. “I recall one guy who had to visit his embassy in Bangkok four times to get a document officially verified and even then he failed because he forgot to take his passport on the last trip.”

Given that Thailand has more than 20 million overseas visitors a

year, and a goodly number coming to Pattaya, it’s not surprising that there are a fair number of visa agencies in the city – around 30 at the last count. “Yes there are good ones and bad ones, professional and amateur, but I can only speak for myself,” confides Mr Chang. “I and my 15 staff have many years experience so we are prepared for almost any problem. I think it helps that I am a Thai national which has enabled me to consolidate and extend my contacts in the complex world of immigration and visas. Another advantage is that Visa2Britain is happy to give free advice whether it leads to a sale or not. People can shop around and that’s fine.”

A typical scenario is that a foreign man wants to take his Thai girlfriend back to his home country for a holiday or even to marry her. “There’s no question that the

Especially for longer visas, including settlement visas for the UK, there may be a translation test for the Thai applicant including speaking, listening, writing and reading. The test is taken at a computer screen so an understanding of basic information technology is also needed. “If these visa applications fail,” explains Mr Chang, “It’s usually because the sponsor in the home country hasn’t provided sufficient detail about his income, or hasn’t got a sufficient salary or pension.” It’s not difficult to understand why specialist advice is eagerly sought by these applicants as the information on government websites is not invariably easy to follow. That’s putting it mildly!

The other side of the coin, of course, is the situation of foreigners wanting to come long-term to Thailand. There are basically four types of one-year visas available in the Kingdom. The most popular by far is the so-called retirement visa which has a strict minimum age of 50. There is also a one-year visa for a foreigner married to a Thai, or with Thai family responsibilities, as well as a long-term education

governments in UK, mainland Europe and the United States have toughened their visa policies in recent years.” The important things, apart from preparing all the documents, are to tell the truth and to keep plenty of evidence of an ongoing relationship when the parties are in different countries. For example, saying you keep in touch by Skype isn’t any use as there won’t be a documentary trail. “And you can’t have

visa for those hoping to improve and extend their language skills.

The fourth type of one-year visa is a work permit linked to a non-immigrant “B” visa. On a typical day in Mr Chang’s offices there will be a continual drift of foreigners looking to fit themselves in to what can appear to be complex regulations.

Some are simply looking to avoid the long queues which are often associated with the police immigration bureaus themselves.

So what of the future? Yes Pattaya is changing. For example the number of retirement visas given to Russians is rising every year and there has been a recent rush of work permit applications for Japanese managers at Laem Chabang port and the nearby Amata City industrial units. On the romantic front, many more gay couples are applying for a visa for the Thai partner to visit Europe to marry or to enter into a civil partnership.

However, it should be noted that gay unions are not currently recognized under Thai law, although spokespersons for the main political parties have promised to “look at” the matter.

In less than three years time the 10-member ASEAN coun-

tries will introduce the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) which over time will establish a free-trade zone and lead to much more travel between the countries. The official language of the AEC will be English. “In addition to our teaching facilities in Pattaya, we have opened a language school at Chachengsao which is attracting many Thais wanting to improve their English in readiness for the AEC implementation. We are planning now for big changes later,” confides Mr Chang.

Visa2Britain is certainly a dynamic organization with an eye firmly fixed on the future. Much else of what they do – extending visas short term, obtaining passports, reporting your 90 days, dealing with overstays, offering a marriage service for foreigners wishing to wed in Thailand, liaising with embassies – would require a separate article. There is certainly a wealth of experience in Mr Chang’s organization. As he freely says, “It’s not only what you know but who you know. This expertise enables us to offer the best public advice in the maze of regulations covering immigration and allied matters.”

Centara to open sixth Pattaya hotel Centara Hotels & Resorts will open its sixth hotel in Pattaya next quarter with the signing of a management contract to operate the Centara Grand Modus Resort & Spa Pattaya. A contract was signed late last year with hotel owner Sweet Water Point Company Ltd. “We have always been very confident indeed in Pattaya as one of Thailand’s prime destinations, and this new property is a strategic signing for us that places our third Pattaya Grand branded hotel in yet another key part of the city,” said Thirayuth Chirathivat, chief executive officer of Centara Hotels & Resorts.

The beachfront hotel, on Naklua’s Wong Amat Beach, is adjacent to the Sanctuary of Truth.

“We have Grand branded hotels at North Pattaya, South Pattaya and Jomtien, and the new property at Naklua places us in a very strong marketing position,” says Chris Bailey, senior vice president for Centara Hotels & Resorts.

Centara Grand Modus features 215 rooms (more than half of which have sea views), two restaurants, Spa Cenvaree, fitness centre, Kids’ Club, three swimming pools with a pool bar, beach club, and meeting and function rooms.

The development also includes 300 condominium units, of which 80 have been sold.

Shell’s four new lubricants may boost sales by 50 percent The Shell Company of Thailand Ltd. introduced a new lineup of motorcycle lubricants for automatic four-stroke engines that may help boost sales of Shell Advance products by 50 percent this year. Comprised of Shell Advance AX7 4-AT, Shell Advance AX5 4-AT and Shell Advance Scooter Gear Oil, the new lineup is formulated to optimize engine performance and keep abreast with the demand of the Thai market where the popularity of automatic motorcycles keeps growing.

Emmanuel Mignot, the company’s regional general manager for Lubricants Business, calls the Thai motorcycle market “one of the highest growth markets in this region due to agility of motorcycles and the traffic conditions in Thailand that make this type of vehicle highly popular among Thais. In 2012, the number of registered motorcycles has already surpassed 19 million units in Thailand.

And while these motorcycles create a demand of 100

million litres of lubricants per annum, nearly half of them is demand for four-stroke engine motorcycles.

Last year, sales of automatic motorcycles accounted for 50 percent of all new four-stroke engine motorcycle sales. As the global leader in lubricants, Shell is aware

of the growth and highly prioritizes the segment of automatic motorcycles. We have therefore developed a new lineup of quality lubricants exclusively for automatic motorcycles to fully cover the demand of Thai consumers.”

In terms of distribution, Shell is extending its partnership with DKSH (Thailand) Co. Ltd. as the official distribution partner of Shell lubricants for indirect channel. Through this partnership, Shell takes advantage of DKSH’s capability to make products readily available to motorcyclists through a nationwide network of distribution channels of more than 16,000 shops, including oils and parts retailers, independent motorcycle repair shops, Shell Advance oil change centers and more than 550 Shell fuel stations.

Shell has set aside a marketing budget of 30 million baht to build consumer awareness of the new products and build the brand through a variety of media channels this year, including TV, printed publications and online media. A sales promotional campaign, Enjoy Every Ride, will be launched. This business-to-consumer promotion will be implemented as a lucky draw campaign called “Win the Ride of Your Choice with Shell Advance”. Motorcycles will be awarded from now to September.

Are we out of the woods yet?

The short answer is no. There is still de-leveraging going on in many of the world’s major economies, with some ongoing uncertainty, which is the mortal enemy of the markets.

Macro issues like North Korea threatening nuclear attacks don’t help either. Other imponderables, like a new strain of bird flu in China, have sector-depressing effects as well; regional airlines and soya bean stock have already been hit.

Notwithstanding the unexpected and unpredictable, ultimately the so-called developed world will get back on track, but expect sluggish, low growth for some little time yet from the US and particularly Europe. Rather than calling it a ‘Depression’, the ‘speak’, in money circles, is ‘The Great Recession’. Nonetheless, it’s not all doom and gloom; the facts indicate that lessons have been learned and changes have and are being made. Whilst the euro zone moves slowly and its decision-making process is cumbersome, to say the least, there are signs that the economically more ’troublesome’ southern European countries are turning their situations around with varying levels of progress and success. The fact is that Europe remains the largest trading block on the planet and, although part of its finances might be bent--if not broken, the union will haul itself out of the mire, hopefully, leaner and fitter. You only have to look at how the world reacts to economic shocks in Europe to understand how important it is–largely with panic due to the realisation that Europe in the doldrums affects the whole world financially.

So, where do we look for decent, stable returns on money? Still, the markets are far too unpredictable for the feint hearted. As is my want, I was locked into my Bloomberg and CNBC screens, alternating between the two. Almost simultaneously, two highly respected economists, one on each of the feeds, came out with completely different and opposing views of how the worlds’ stock markets would go in 2013. One said it would be a ‘bull’ year and the other said, the ‘sale in May’ philosophy will come early this year as investors take flight, with fears that the recent rises have gone too far. With this kind of ‘expert’ disagreement, how can anyone hang their hat on such uncertainty?

Most of us are the same; we’re looking for something better than the banks will give us, without collapsing with shock into our toast and marmalade, watching the value of our hard earned cash jump hysterically up and down.

There are some possibilities that have come more to the fore in recent years. In an endeavor to offer investors a secure, consistentlyreasonable return, funds have developed in sectors where demand for their services far outstrips supply. There are several examples of this, in several sectors where, although difficult to believe, prices have never dropped since early on, or before the financial crisis or, indeed, since their inception. With something over 40,000 funds available, it is like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack. Nonetheless, they do exist.

Visiting these fine Bangkok developments and having their management teams make their development presentations and lead us through the showrooms and buildings themselves is a fascinating opportunity to see Thailand’s very finest luxury condominium and villa developments at their very best.

As you can see, the Thailand Property Awards is truly a spectacular event and Terry Blackburn deserves a tremendous amount of credit for having produced, in just a few years, Thailand’s cutting-edge residential property awards venue.

Gay marriage in Thailand? Doubtful (Jay Kettering writes) I think your recent editorial that same-sex civil unions or marriages are on the cards in Thailand in the near future is overly optimistic. I agree that Thai cities often have large gay scenes and it is said that Pattaya has the biggest one in the whole of Asia, even though many bloggers in the social media have noted that the bars in Sunee Plaza, Boyztown and the Jomtien Complex are often nearly empty these days.

I also agree that Thai soap operas often have openly gay characters, although these are invariably very camp individuals, usually in female attire, whose function is to make the audience laugh. Admittedly Thailand now has transgender politicians and openly gay talk show hosts, although the numbers in these categories are very small indeed. Let’s not kid ourselves too much.

A poll recently conducted by NIDA showed that almost 60 percent of the Thai population is opposed to same-sex marriage on the grounds that it is unnatural and sets a bad example to children. In a way this is strange as Buddhism as a religion says nothing about banning homosexuality, unlike the Christian tradition. Nor does Thai law specifically outlaw homosexuality – unless pedophilia or prostitution are involved – but simply says that a marriage can only be approved when both a man and a woman consent.

Visa fees at Vientiane Q: How much is the visa fee to enter Laos at Vientiane airport?

A: It depends on your nationality – between US$20 and US$50. The Laos government recently announced that Russian visitors are to be free. Discussions are still underway to have joint visas with other ASEAN partners, but details are still unclear.

Multiple entry to Cambodia Q: As I visit Phnom Penh several times a year, I am investigating the possibility of a multi-entry visa but I’m not making much progress. There does not seem to be any provision at the airport for anything other than singles.

A: You could inquire at the Immigration Bureau opposite Phnom Penh airport, but most people contact one of the tourist and visa shops on the main tourist strip by the river in Phnom Penh. A one-year multiple entry will cost you just short of US$300 but no special documentation is required. However, the multi-entry is only available as a business visa (not tourist), so make sure you obtain a business visa for US$25 the next time you enter by air. If you buy a tourist visa, no can do, we are told.

Airport question in Cambodia Q: I have noticed that you no longer pay the US$25 exit fee on leaving Phnom Penh or Siem Reap airport on your way out. This is because the fee is now included in your ticket. Yet the office to collect these fees is still open. Why is that?

A major factor here is that Thailand works on a largely civil law rather than a common law system.

For all these reasons I for one just don’t believe that Thailand is on the verge of a breakthrough with regard to gay civil rights. The subject will simply become lost in the mass of other topics demanding the time of parliament, notably charter amendment, government borrowing, reconciliation and the rest. As time goes on I would suggest that ASEAN will become more important socially as well as economically. Therein lies the hope for change. After all, the progress of gay rights in the UK over the past 20 years has owed much to European initiatives in Brussels.

A: There are one or two budget airlines where you may have to pay the exit fee which is not included in your ticket. Also Cambodian nationals sometimes have to fill in a form.

Age limit for a retirement visa Q: I know the minimum age for a Thai one-year retirement visa is 50, but many people have retired from work before that time, so is there any plan to reduce the age barrier? To give one example, there is no such minimum age restriction in the Philippines.

A: This is a commonly raised question, but there is no plan to lower the age in Thailand, according to the Immigration Bureau. They point out that the age dropped from 60 to 55 and then 50 some years ago. The easiest one-year visa for “young” long stayers in Thailand is probably the education visa, unless you are married to a Thai spouse.

Arrest at the airport Q: I have a two weeks overstay here in Thailand and I am sick with worry that I will be arrested at the airport or that my name will be placed on a banned list.

Do I have any alternative to put my mind at rest?

A: You will not be arrested as long as you have the cash for the fine, namely 500 baht per overstay day. Nor will you be banned from Thailand. You could pay the fine at a local Immigration office but, in that case, you will need to buy a further week’s extension for 1,900 baht. The important point is that short overstays, of say a few weeks, can be sorted out by paying – period!

Waiting for passport Q: I dropped my passport in the washing machine and it is ruined. I have applied at my embassy for a new one but I will be in overstay by the time it is ready. Will I be liable for the fine as I have no choice but to wait.

A: You are responsible for the overstay at 500 baht per day no matter what the cause of the problem. You could discuss with your embassy the possibility or otherwise of an emergency travel document which is usually a much quicker procedure.

Today's Editorial Pattaya-Bangkok gambling In the news yet again, another Pattaya “casino” has been closed by the police. Given that gambling is officially illegal in Thailand, you would be right in supposing that the establishments in question tend to be secretive and not lit up with neon signs. Typically they operate in houses or the rear of commercial buildings and offer some rather basic games such as hi-low (guess whether the next number is bigger or smaller than this one) and a variety of card games reminiscent of snap. Occasionally there might be a basic roulette table or a few slot machines known in Thai as too ma (horse boxes).

Because of the obvious fear of being raided and closed down, the premises are invariably humble. There is little point in spending a fortune on painting and decorating if you are likely to be in handcuffs any time soon. Typically, the police learn of the existence of a casino through a third party complaint or an upright citizen who can’t bear the thought of crime in his neighborhood or a punter angry at losing his funds. A raid follows in which police surround the premises in the hope that nobody will escape – though some do manage somehow to slip through the net in the darkness – whilst those unlucky enough to be caught are usually fined 100 baht at the police station before being advised to go home and mend their ways. The organizer or householder may face a court appearance before being fined a larger sum.

One of the strange features of casino raids in Pattaya is how little money is actually found in the pot, rarely over 500 baht and on one occasion as low as 20 baht. There is considerable speculation why this is so, but it’s likely that the betters are mostly poor people trying to improve their lot in life by gambling with their low wages. There was an incident in 2007 when aerial police from helicopters raided a cruise ship moored in Pattaya bay, rumored to contain rich foreigners enjoying blackjack, but it was a false alarm.

Bangkok, unlike the much smaller Pattaya, seems to have a more substantial gambling problem in its vastness.

Several times a year senior police officers are transferred and shuffled after organized betting is discovered in their jurisdictions. Only last month, the national police chief said there would be more raids by the elite Crime Suppression Division because of information that some city police stations are turning a blind eye to illegal dens. This has been said for many years and has been highlighted by Member of Parliament Chuwit Kamolvisit who last year claimed that a Bangkok casino gave police two million baht a day to be allowed to keep open. Businesses like that are attracting high-rollers and not punters making minimum wage.

When arrests are made, the target is usually the gamblers themselves rather than the big-time operators and owners. It seems that any Bangkok taxi driver can take you to a casino as they know precisely where they are located.

According to a recent study, there are at least 170 gambling dens in the metropolis which together generate up to 200 billion baht a year. Annual revenue from gambling dens in the entire country has been estimated at four times that gigantic sum.

Public opinion polls routinely confirm that most citizens do believe that the police routinely accept bribes from gambling houses. One obvious answer to the whole problem is for Thailand to introduce lawful casinos. But that is not going to happen any time soon. Meanwhile, illegal casinos of one sort or another will continue as long as there are corrupt law enforcers, a huge public demand and high returns. A start could be made if major casino operators and owners were targeted and their personal property sized following a conviction. But the situation isn’t likely to improve without a liberalization of the law. It’s also true, of course, that even countries with lawful gambling have illegal casinos operating in the shadows. No easy solutions.

Summer season and heatstroke

Summer in Thailand is especially this mouth, April. So please be aware of some simple symptoms that can lead to your dog’s death from heatstroke!

Heatstroke can be life-threatening, so such be treated as an emergency; it requires immediate treatment.

Because dogs do not sweat (except minimally through their foot pads), they do not tolerate high environmental

temperatures as well as humans do. Dogs depend upon panting to exchange warm air for cool air. But when the air temperature is close to their body temperature, cooling by panting is not sufficient.

Common situations that can set the stage for heatstroke in dogs include: - Being left in a car in hot weather - Exercising strenuously in hot, humid weather - Being muzzled while under a hair dryer - Suffering from a high fever or seizures - Being confined on hot concrete or asphalt surfaces - Being confined without shade and fresh water in hot weather - Having a history of heat stroke - Puppies or old dogs - Sick dogs and those with chronic health conditions like heart or lung disease - Dogs not acclimated to warm weather - Dogs with flat faces and short noses, also known as brachycephalic, like Pugs, Boston Terriers, Pekinese, Boxers, Bulldogs, Shih Tzus; these breeds don't pant as efficiently as breeds with longer noses Heatstroke begins with heavy panting and difficulty breathing. The tongue and mucous membranes appear bright red. The saliva is thick and tenacious, and the dog often vomits. Rectal temperature rises to 104° to 110°F (40° to 43.3°C). The dog becomes progressively unsteady and passes bloody diarrhea. As shock sets in, the lips and mucous membranes turn gray. The animal

collapses, seizures, falls into a coma, and death rapidly ensues.

Following an episode of heatstroke, rush your dog to a veterinarian immediately. Heatstroke can be associated with laryngeal edema. This seriously worsens the breathing problem and may require an emergency tracheostomy.

Other consequences of hyperthermia include kidney failure, spontaneous bleeding, irregular heartbeat, and seizures. These complications can occur hours or days later.

What to do if your dog gets overheated If you think your dog (or any dog) has heatstroke, take immediate action: Move him immediately to a cool area – either into the shade or preferably into air conditioning.

Assess his condition – is he able to stand? Is he conscious and panting? If so, offer him small amounts of water to drink; take his temperature if possible.

If he's at 104ºF or lower, remain with him in a cool environment. Watch him carefully and keep offering small drinks of water. A large volume of water all at once might cause him to vomit, which will add to the risk of dehydration.

When he seems more comfortable, call your veterinarian for next steps. The doctor may want to evaluate your dog even if he seems fully recovered.

If your pet is unable to stand on her own, is unresponsive to your voice, touch or the sight of you, or is having seizures, check for breathing and a heartbeat.

At the same time, have someone contact a veterinary hospital (or make the call yourself if you're alone with your pet) to let them know you'll be bringing her in right away. It's important to alert the clinic you're on the way so they can prepare for your arrival.

Begin cooling procedures by soaking her body with cool water – cool, but not cold. Use a hose, wet towels or any other source of cool water that is handy. Take her temperature if possible.

Concentrate the cooling water on her head, neck and the areas underneath her front and back legs. Carefully cool her tongue if possible, but don't let water run into her throat as it could get into her lungs. Never put water in a dog's mouth if she can't swallow on its own. Put a fan on her if possible – it will speed up the cooling process.

After a few minutes, re-check her temperature. If her temp is at or below 104 degrees, stop the cooling process. Further cooling could lead to blood clotting or a too-low body temperature. Get her to a veterinary clinic ASAP--even if she seems to be recovering.

Flip and Flop are two young cats who were disabled at birth and cannot walk.

They still enjoy happy and reasonably active lives and, surprisingly, they don’t need much special care. But you need to have plenty of time to give them all the love and attention they need.

Tammy

Tammy is a really friendly black and white puss living in a cage at our local animal hospital. Sadly she has been diagnosed with feline leukaemia which means she must be an indoor pet so that she cannot pass on the disease to other cats. She needs no special care, just regular vaccinations, and is expected to live a normal lifespan with careful monitoring.

Fab Four

The Fab Four (John, Paula, George and Ringo) were dumped outside a house close to where we live. Luckily the owner of the house heard their cries and brought them into her home for safety. We now have them as temporary adoptions in our shelter. They are still very young but will be ready for new homes in a few short weeks.

If it’s not the quality of bulbs available in this country, do you know what the other possible problems could be and how I could check it out?

The problem also might be too high a wattage bulb in too small an enclosed fixture (such as a globe; if the heat can't get out--the bulb burns too hot, leading to short bulb life). Same for recessed lighting fixtures which often get covered, blocking necessary ventilation (heat can build up around the bulb, causing short bulb life).

The light bulb package should have an average life expectancy printed on it (though sometimes you might need help from someone who reads Thai). The typical incandescent light bulb is good for roughly 900 hours (at 10 hours a day that's three months; at 24 hours a day it's a little more than a month). Newer energy-saving bulbs may last up to three years. If you compute the average life of your bulbs and discover it's clearly less than the manufacturer's rated life, then you may have over-voltage in your home. Occasionally this causes more serious problems.

Get a cheap multimeter to check.

If the voltage is 125V or higher, talk to the power company about it--7 or 8 extra volts on a 120V

Naklua Nick’s New Nuke I just bought my first microwave oven and when I opened the box I found that all instructions for operating, care and cleaning were in Thai. Unable to read Thai, I hope you might provide some tips on how to care for my new appliance. Cleaning tips also would be helpful.

Nick in Naklua Depending on the manufacturer of your new microwave, Nick, I would think you could find the company website and search for an owner’s manual online. If I were giving you advice, I would say never operate your microwave when it is empty, use only containers that are specified as microwave

safe, and never place metal items in the oven. I would also suggest that you cover food to avoid unnecessary spatters, and keep a small cup or vile of water in the corner of the oven. As to cleaning, wipe up spills at once. Wash regularly with water and mild detergent (never use scouring powder or abrasive pads); rinse and wipe dry with a paper towel or clean cloth. Especially clean around the door edges and opening to prevent soil buildup that could prevent the door from closing tightly. If spots seem dried on, boil water in a glass cup a few minutes to create steam, which should loosen the soil. Leave in oven 5 minutes, then wipe dry.

Be careful not to pick up a cup of boiled water from the microwave; it may erupt and burn you. To remove odors from the oven, either clean the interior with a solution of 1 tablespoon baking soda to 1 cup warm water, rinse and dry, or mix 1 part lemon juice to 3 parts water in a large glass cup and boil 3-5 minutes. Let cool. Then remove water and wipe dry.

Frank, Forthright & Frigid Dear Agony Ivy, Disappointing nudity I have been a naturalist most of my adult life and, on retiring to Thailand, I thought I would be able to express myself as nature intended by abandoning my clothes when circumstances permit. Of course, I don’t expect to walk around in public as a naked individual but I was looking forward to the experience in controlled circumstances.

For this reason I joined a Thai Nude Club on the internet thinking that my dreams would come true. But I was very wrong.

The club I joined had 600 members according to the woman who took my money, but I never saw anyone else at all during my several visits there. There were tennis courts but nobody ever played any games on them and the swimming pool was invariably completely deserted. I am so lonely, so what can I do?

You did enclose in your letter to me a photo of yourself in the nude and there is no denying you are on the ugly side to say the least with a large belly too. This is likely the reason why the other club members are avoiding you. I notice in the internet advertisement for this particular nude club that the one place where you can wear clothes on-site is in the tuck shop. The best thing may be to sit there fully dressed as there’s a better chance you might actually get a conversation.

Ester If you’re storing potatoes you bought from a market and plan to use them within a few days, Ester, it makes little difference how or where you keep them.

On the other hand, if you found a great sale and bought a large quantity of potatoes that you will be keeping for the next several months, proper storage is crucial. When buying or sorting potatoes, and before storing them, get rid of all the green, bruised or infected spuds. Storing unhealthy potatoes with healthy potatoes threatens the entire collection. Then put them in a cool, dark space with good ventilation—but not in the refrigerator, which is too cold. Cold air will sweeten them and make them turn dark when cooked. Ideally, store them between 4.5 to 10 degrees (45 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit), which may be difficult in our climate, but nevertheless important. It is also important to keep them out of light, which turns them green, making them toxic. Not good. Also, keep your potatoes away from other vegetables and fruits--particularly apples. As potatoes age they release ethylene. That will cause apples and many other fruits and vegetables to spoil faster. That’s the main reason why a fridge crisper is far from ideal. Art in Early Learning

Art is a very important part of early learning development in school and at home.

Friedrich Froebel, the founder of Kindergarten, believed that children need to be in-

volved in creating art and enjoying the art of others. Art helps improve all-sided development in young children.

The main areas art helps a child’s development are • Socio-emotional development • Cognitive development • Motor development Art improves socio-emotional development in young children as they feel a sense

of emotional satisfaction. Children like a choice of different materials giving them independence and control. When children work in small groups they learn to build each other’s self esteem by comparing their creative work. Children will also learn important social skills when sharing materials.

For very young children art should be a sensory exploration activity. Children love to see art being created in real time. Feeling different materials builds knowledge of objects in the world. As children grow they began to represent real objects, events and feelings in their artwork. This allows them to portray emotions which at a young age can be difficult in conversation.

Arm movements required for painting and drawing build coordination and strength. Wrists and finger movements using scissors, clay and play dough develop fine motor dexterity and control. These skills help form letters and spacing in formal writing.

When children work on an art piece it is okay to suggest a theme. Too much direction though will limit their imagination and emotional development in the piece.

Children should be encouraged to complete work alone with minimal or no physical support. Give children a small amount of choice when creating art using paint, crayons, scissors, glue and clay. Too many choices can be overwhelming; not enough choices can limit creativity.

Now with the new art gallery in Pattaya, Art in Paradise, children have a place to interact with different forms of sensory art.

It is a good way to get children inspired in creating their own interactive artwork using inspiration from other artists.

Mountain Shadow G.C. (Stableford) A sudden drop in numbers today as the Songkran exodus seems to have started a little early, so we were down to a single flight for the first time for quite some time. We arrived at Mountain Shadow to find the car park almost empty and were anticipating a quick round, but unfortunately we were put out behind two slow 4-balls, so it turned out to be another long day.

The temperature was as hot as anyone could remember and with the accompanying high humidity, most players were happy just to survive the round! It was a day when having a golf buggy was a real advantage. Reg Smart duly seized the opportunity to score his first outright win of the year ahead of the ever consistent Colin Greig. Reg had 34 points after 14 holes but fell victim to the tricky closing stretch of holes, which was made even more difficult due to a strong wind which developed as a thunder storm passed close by. Colin Greig won the fewest putts competition again, but someone pointed out that if you counted the putts from off the green, he would have also won the most shots with a putter competition!

Only three near pins were hit: Colin Greig, Geoff Hart and Gerry Cooney. Fewest putts competition: Colin Greig (27 putts) Royal Lakeside G.C. (Stableford) Maybe it was the longer trip than usual, or maybe memories of the blisteringly hot round on Monday, but there were even fewer golfers today. It was a hot day again, but some relief was provided by the strong wind that was blowing at between 2 and 3 club’s strength. The course was in good condition as always, apart from the usual complaints about there being too much sand in the bunkers. Lee Butler came back to the clubhouse looking like a drowned whale, after having sweat out several gallons of beer, but he still managed to card the best score of the day to take the overall win. Mike Grasser was playing his last game before returning to the States, but unfortunately he had to cut the round short due to a back injury – not a great way to finish a holiday, Mike, but hopefully see you back again later in the year.

Fortunately the course was not too busy and the round was completed without any major holdups. As the first 4-ball was waiting to tee off from the first tee they watched Peter Habgood hit a great second shot from the first fairway back towards the second green, following an errant tee shot. Some minutes later they also watched as PJ Redmond and Jerry Waselenkoff were in deep discussion standing over two balls on the first fairway before Jerry jumped into his buggy and headed off to the second green. Jerry returned with Peter Habgood in tow and it transpired that Peter’s superb second shot had actually been played with the wrong ball – not a great way to start a round! Other than that little drama at the start, the only other major drama was Neil Griffin carding a great score of 39 points to win the honours on the day, beating Colin Greig on a count-back. Neil also had the distinction of winning the near-pin prize on the 173 yard par three 12th hole, using a driver to put the ball two feet from the pin – proving it doesn’t matter which club you use! We said goodbye to Gordon Melia on his final game of the annual visit, and we look forward to seeing him and Marion again in the autumn.

Khao Kheow (Stableford) It is always a bit boring reading these write ups when all you really want is to know who won, or the last page, so for a change we will give the results first and then go into all the boring stuff.

After all the winners only read it when they win, so for a change it will be nice to get it over with, especially as Carole Kubicki is on her way home soon and we will all then be able to win. Bye bye, the Kubicki’s.

So in the A Flight, 0 to 18, the winner was Brian Parish with 39 points ahead of a count-back on 33 points that saw Landis Brooks in second, Mark West in third and Mashi just missing out. In the B Flight the winner was Carole Kubicki with 37 points ahead of a count-back on 36 points that saw Derek Brook in second and Andre Van Dyk in third. Just think if it had been next week I would have won. Yes, age has caught up and I have slipped into the group of players with character, grey hair and paunches. Woe is me.

Rubbish over, let’s get to the really interesting things. It is really hot out there. The course was in good condition, and we had a good round playing the B & C Nines. That’s about all for the course, except they are sanding the A Nine, as we have played it before. Oh, by the way, it is a really good course with a friendly staff.

I won’t go on about the traffic on the way back , that is normal, but I must say on the way back, living on Beach Road, I was reminded of the ongoing ‘Saga of Beach Road’ and the number of times I have seen major disruption there. Dig it up, fix it, wait a while and dig it up again.

Then block up the town for a sing song or party or such for days. Over the years it has proved better comedy than a TV

programme. Now they are building a third lane, I am advised, when all they really need to do is stop anyone parking on the road and they have three lanes. Change direction from Pattaya Klang to Pattaya Nua and all the busses can stop and let the passengers off, so no sheep on the road and a shepherd not deeded.

Well I feel better now and next week normal service will be resumed. T.T.F.N. On this day we had a good turnout, and were soon at the course. We could have got away a bit sooner than we did as the starter tried to get us away, however we mislaid one of the busses.

Still we got away a bit early and made good speed. The course was in good condition, but we had the normal hot conditions and a nice wind to cool us down.

Round over, it was back to Bert’s for the results. In the A Flight, 0 to 18, the winner was Bill McGarvie with 38 points ahead of a count-back on 37 points that saw Landis Brooks in second and Mark West in third. An Unusual Purchase for the Camillian Social Centre

by William Macey A visit to the Camillian Social Centre in Bang Chang is always something to look forward to. When visiting, the one thing that is certain is a warm, friendly welcome from Father Peter, his staff and all the children. This year’s bi-annual visit by Pattaya Sports Club was no exception.

The Camillian have 65 children who, through no fault of their own, now live with HIV. Until a cure is discovered, they

the temperature when the children left home was minus 23 degrees Celsius, just a normal day for the time of year. They, along with many other Russian children, arrived at the Father Ray Foundation to perform for the children and to take part in a talent competition.

Dancers and singers from local dance institutes, international schools, as well as several schools throughout Russia all competed for a large crowd and three judges who sat in front of the stage.

For many in the audience, including the children of the Father Ray Foundation, the highlight of the event was watching the dancers from northern Siberia.

Dressed in fur-lined coats, leather boots and topped with a fur hat, they danced around the stage with so much

A large drain on finances is the purchase of adult diapers. Yes, I said diapers. So off we went to Makro in the Camillian bus, and a lengthy spell of negotiations took place with the management, following which, Makro were left with no stocks of adult diapers. We could not have managed without the services of Jimmy, who has been at the Camillian for two years and can speak Thai. He demanded and obtained discounts from Makro which enabled us to buy a bus-full of diapers and still had some funds to purchase some rice which is in short supply at the moment.

Back to the centre where a simple but welcome lunch was served, photos taken and the end of another trip to the Camillian Social Centre.

Even the disadvantaged have talent

by Derek Franklin A talent is not a privilege of the privileged. A person from a disadvantaged background with a talent for education, sports or the arts will only realize his or her ability if given the right opportunity.

Children living at the various projects managed by the Father Ray Foundation are given time to take up a hobby, and anyone who shows a talent is encouraged to pursue those interests. Several residents have shown they are so talented in painting they have been commissioned to produce paintings, and many such works have been sold at different auctions in Pattaya.

Seeing the level of professionalism in the art of children living at the Father Ray Children’s Home, several students from the Ruamrudee International School in Bangkok came up with an idea of selling Christmas cards designed by the children.

While the children were making their designs, the Bangkok students contacted companies throughout Thailand and asked them to sponsor the printing of the

cards, with the promise that their company’s logo would appear on each card.

So popular were the finished designs the first batch sold out within days. The print shop worked overtime to produce thousands of cards that were sent all over the world.

Several companies were so impressed with the collaboration between the Bangkok students and the Pattaya residents they made additional donations.

On the first Sunday of the school holidays the children of the Father Ray Foundation gathered together for a day of arts and crafts. More than 200 children-from two-year olds to teenagers-- painted on canvases, decorated sculptures and learned new skills.

At the same time, students from Ruamrudee International School traveled to Pattaya with the proceeds from the Christmas cards sales; they presented 1 million baht to Father Peter, president of the Father Ray Foundation. The cleric said the funds will be used to provide a space where the children can practice their hobbies and interests.
