fter trial runs in Pattaya and Phuket, the tourist court initiative is now spreading fast in Thailand. A new Bangkok venue opened in Pathumwan municipal court last month and 15 more are planned nationwide in the next year. The tourist courts aim to deliver quick and fair rulings in usually minor cases involving foreign holidaymakers who may not be in Thailand long enough to wait for the normal, lengthy proceedings. Secretary-General of the Judiciary Office, Phattarasak Vannasaeng, said that the initiative had already drawn praise from embassies, the media and the travelling public.

Pattaya opened the first tourist court in September last year after concerns that the Thai judicial system was not coping adequately with short-term visitors. However, the new courts are not separate from the traditional judiciary but can settle consumer protection and civil cases, including Jet Ski ripoffs, provided both parties agree to the arbitration. Another advantage of the tourist court is to take witness statements from vacationers, including video-conferencing, without their needing to turn up at a subsequent trial. Continued on page 6

News Street vendor stabs tourist
Polish national Andrew Kuswik was stabbed when he came to the assistance of two Russian women on Walking Street. The 47-yearold tourist said he noticed two Russian women haggling with a street vendor over the price of a trinket. So he decided to assist but was unable to
communicate with the vendor because they did not speak each other’s language. An argument ensued and the vendor stabbed the tourist in the arm. He was treated at Banglamung Hospital. Police are following up on the incident, but Kuswik could not remember what his assailant looked like.
Robbery in North Pattaya
Iranian tourist Mohammad Safai-rad, 61, returned to his North Pattaya room to find the door lock had been jimmied and his room safe stolen. A thief escaped with about 30,000 baht. Believing it was an
inside job involving more than one person, police questioned the building staff. The security guard claimed to have seen nothing unusual, despite there being only one entrance to the building. Investigations continue.
Dead woman wrapped in plastic The decomposed body of an unidentified woman was discovered on the open deck above a French restaurant in South Pattaya. About 20 years old with shoulder-length hair, the woman--whose corpse is in an advanced state of decay after about two months--is thought to have been strangled. The body, wrapped in a plastic bag and covered with wood and a blanket, was discovered when a neighbor complained about a strong stink, prompting the
restaurant owner to have the roof checked. Police were told that the door leading to the roof was permanently locked and the area had not been used for months. A women working in the area, Dao Boonsawas, had reported to the police that her relative living nearby had gone missing. Investigators surmise that the murderer was a foreigner but declined to say more, fearing the additional information would cause the guilty person to flee the country.
Diner stabbed in restaurant
A 21-year-old man from Buriram was stabbed twice while eating with friends in a Pattaya restaurant. Worawit Saengaroon said he was eating quietly with friends when a man from a neighboring table approached and asked why he was staring. Worawit denied
any such action. Nevertheless, the man stabbed him in the arm and back, then fled with his female companion. Worawit fell to the floor as police and emergency services were called to the scene. The victim’s parents said they would file a police complaint.
Pattaya hotel suffers fire Firemen were called to the Apex Hotel on Second Road when fire broke out, possibly arising from an electrical short. Upon smelling smoke, hotel guests rushed from the building carrying their belongings. Several fire engines were summoned and doused the flames for more than hour before the fire was totally extinguished. No injuries were reported. Inquiries continue to determine the fire’s cause.

Pattaya Marches On! Thailand’s favorite beach resort seems to have ignored the political troubles in Bangkok over the past few months. Pattaya tourist arrivals remain buoyant and almost 10 million visitors, domestic and foreign, are expected to visit the city in the calendar year 2014, generating income of 170 billion baht. The top nine tourism markets for Pattaya are Russia, China,
Germany, the Middle East, India, South Korea, Taiwan, Britain and Eastern Europe. Although Britain has certainly slipped from its number one position throughout the 1990s and the 2000s, there are nonetheless record numbers of Brits applying for one-year retirement visas. There is also evidence that some British tourists are now including several Southeast Asian countries in their itinerary,
especially Cambodia, Vietnam and Myanmar, rather than spending their entire vacation in Thailand. A recent poll, conducted by Pattaya Today, suggested that most overseas tourists knew clearly that demonstrations in Bangkok did not overlap with Pattaya. One respondent said, “Pattaya is always a fun city, so it’s just a question of bypassing Bangkok when political tensions run high.” Asked about their reservations, 92 percent said Pattaya’s problems were largely related to weak law enforcement, especially street crime and Jet Ski rip-offs. Only eight percent of 120 respondents mentioned political instability in the country as a disincentive to tourists. Chonburi province now has more than 500 hotels and 50 tourism sites to serve its growing tourism industry which is a key revenue earner. The resort’s proximity to Bangkok and Suvarnabhumi airport, an hour and a half ’s drive away, is invariably mentioned as a plus for the beach resort. Latest figures from Pattaya’s hoteliers give an occupancy rate of around 75 percent, especially in the four- and five-star luxury sectors.
Meanwhile Veranda Group, the luxury hotel company, has this month boosted confidence by agreeing to spend at least 2 billion baht, excluding land costs, to build its fourth property in Pattaya. Located on Na Jomtien beach, the mixed-use property will consist of the 150room Veranda Resort and Spa and also the Veranda Residence Pattaya Condominium which will have 364 units and four villas. The scheduled completion date is 2016. Property gurus say that an
underestimated factor in Pattaya’s continued popularity is its improved infrastructure. The availability of first-class hospital care, good schools and impressive shopping and entertainment facilities to rival Bangkok all play a part in encouraging property investment on the Eastern Seaboard. A City Hall spokesman added, “Pattaya has long discarded its traditional image of offering only night clubs to the visitor. It’s become a vibrant and sophisticated city in its own right.”

The head of all Thai police, General Adul Saengsingkaew, visited Pattaya Police Station where he witnessed the ongoing training of traffic police who committed to improve the flow of traffic throughout the city.
Volunteers assist the elderly
Following 70 hours of training, 40 voluntary workers visited pensioners in the Naklua area to offer health checks and advice on exercise and accident prevention in the home. The program is seen as a positive response to the growing number of aged residents here who are living largely or wholly on their own.
Honest taxi driver tipped
A lucky Iranian tourist got back his 50,000 baht after a driver reported his find at Pattaya Police Station. Wichean Ponkongh, 58, a Chonburi-based taxi driver, said he had transported three Iranian tourists from U-tapao airport to Pattaya. After dropping his fares, the driver found an envelope containing the cash and contacted Pattaya Police. It was confirmed that 25-year-old Ramin Rajaeetabar had reported that he had lost his holiday money. The Iranian gave the taxi driver a modest reward.
Local government officials inspected Nokkrayang Canal in response to complaints from locals that the waterway was unfenced and had led to people falling in, especially at night. The Pattaya City Council is deliberating whether the threat warrants building a fence.

News Tourist courts successful Continued from page 1 The courts can also award compensation, for example following a serious accident involving loss of life. Pattaya tourist court’s first-ever case was to settle compensation after two Chinese tourists were killed in a speedboat accident last August. In this case the speedboat operators agreed to arbitration whilst the criminal case against the driver was referred to the normal criminal court. The tourist courts do not try serious criminal cases against foreigners, for example involving drugs or serious assaults, and those accused of most crimes must apply for bail and await their case in the normal way. Nor can the court impose settlements against the will of one party or the other. Such disputes have to be referred to the traditional courts. The Pattaya tourist court has so far handled over 30 cases, mostly civil suits involving tourists, and most of them have been settled. A much larger number of cases, almost 200, have been heard by the Phuket court. It is not

clear why there is such a large discrepancy, but it is likely related to the much heavier international publicity about scams and cheating in the southern resort. If a foreigner wishes to approach the tourist court, he or she must first obtain a police station report about the incident in question. The tourist should then present this document and others in his possession, including photographs of the incident and witness statements (if any), at the Pattaya tourist court which is lodged in the main court buildings in Jomtien on Thappraya Road, open to the public in office hours. Official
translators in various languages are used extensively. Observers say that the majority of cases brought to the attention of the tourist court are complaints from foreigners about personal security, thefts, unfair business dealings, credit card fraud, scams and minor injuries. However, some well-known scams persist – especially the Jet Ski menace. This is likely because tourists who are pressured to pay excessively for small or non-existent damage may be discouraged by the operators from seeking outside intervention, or told they will end up paying even more if they don’t settle on the spot.
Police descended in force on Second Road and hauled away fake-brand clothes, shoes, sunglasses, and watches valued at about two million baht. A Pattaya police spokesman said the
government had ordered the city’s law enforcers to pay particular attention to the problem of faux brands because of the prevalence of the problem on the Eastern Seaboard.
Chinese tour guide killed in crash
Bystanders detain scissors attacker
A would-be thief wielding a pair of scissors was subdued by locals when the assailant tried robbing a German tourist on Pattaya beach, opposite the Tropicana Hotel. The alleged attacker, 41-year-old Pun Krasae,
was held by locals until the arrival of police. A shirt vender, 34-year-old Nattasit Tetrit, said he came to the rescue of the foreigner when he heard a woman shouting that a farang was being robbed.
Mysterious drowning in North Pattaya Police rushed to North Pattaya Beach in response to reports that a corpse was floating off shore. They recovered the body of an Asianlooking man wearing trousers and an orange t-shirt. One of his shoes was found on a marker buoy, used for describing the area of safe swimming, which led police to speculate that the deceased had been drunk and perhaps was leaping from one buoy to another-unsuccessfully. Foreign embassies have been queried to determine if one of their nationals is missing.
An accident outside Pattaya Floating Market resulted in the death of a Chinese tour guide. A pickup vehicle (without a license plate) crashed into the back of a stationary tour bus which, in turn, hit 25-year-old Liu Miaoya, a guide working for Lucky Sky Express Company. She was pronounced dead at the scene, having
suffered multiple injuries. The driver of the pickup escaped with minor injuries, and two bystanders suffered broken bones and were rushed to the hospital. A witness said the pickup was speeding along Sukhumvit Road toward Sattahip and swerved before mounting a pedestrian walkway.
Dane killed in crash
A 67-year-old Danish national was killed when his motorbike crashed into a van on Sukhumvit Road. Ole Laursen was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The van driver, Mormo Hasdaeng, said he had not time to avoid Laursen’s motorbike when the Dane turned directly into the path of the van and against the traffic signal. The Danish embassy has been notified.

Level 34, Hilton Pattaya
Mick & Di The Big Fish at Siam@Siam Design Hotel Pattaya The Food Lovers
thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com
A magical mystery tour of the unexpected The latest hospitality location to join Pattaya’s plethora of 5-star hotels is the extraordinary Siam@ Siam Design Hotel Pattaya. Forget the quotidian in interior design forget everything you have seen, experienced or viewed in the past and be prepared to be amazed. This remarkable pleasure dome oozes, screams and shouts with raw design and vibrant colors inspired by modern pop culture, folklore and fantasy. Eclectic imaginings of a visual artist have been inspirational in creating a modern art gallery hotel with 268 guestrooms and suites. Quirky design features and recycled materials are enhanced by home comforts and modern amenities to create highly appealing spaces where guests can marvel at the daring design of this conceptual establishment. Mick and I visited recently and were (truly) gob-smacked by the size and scope of this idiosyncratic hotel. Drawing on the rich motoring heritage of the founding Phornprapha family, cars and their mechanics are inspirational to the décor as is the ocean and its fishy inhabitants. The Car Bar on the ground floor reveals surprises at every turn, jeeps, rickshaws and even a suspended flying car form the decorative element while exotic molecular cocktails and traditional Thai snacks (with a twist) are given
the inimitable Siam@Siam Pattaya stamp. Journey to The Big Fish on the 6th floor and the environment plunges you headfirst into the fantasy world of the ocean; jelly fish lamps adorn the ceiling, a fish tail forms the bar with industrially conceived elements of naval ships and submarines all vying for attention. We were welcomed in the restaurant by the marketing communication and public relations manager, Satachai “Pob” Thongrubkew, and the executive chef, Chatree “Long” Wongsriphaisan, and swiftly served two signature cocktails for tasting. “Tom Kha The Cocktail” was a unique taste sensation, visually it was amazing, a profusion of dry ice billowing from a
martini glass and taste wise imparted a considerable spicy kick to awaken the senses. The other cocktail was called “The Mumbai Story,” a Bombay gin base with triple sec and generously laden with passion fruit. Long commenced his training at The Oriental in Bangkok and then went on to join some of the premium fine dining establishments in the capital. His contemporary Thai menu is intense with marine wealth, but is also studded with culinary nuggets from the western world albeit fused with Southeast Asian twists and turns. We started our meal with a strawberry savory salad studded with walnuts, orange segments and cream cheese bubbles. Tossed with an excellent strawberry/balsamic dressing it proved a refreshing approach to a cleansing starter salad. Other starters offer larb moo (spicy minced pork salad), seafood fritto misto with a wasabi tartar and a sesame salad or a fiery grilled beef salad with chili paste, lemongrass and fresh mint (B.250). One-dish meals are a popular choice here with noodles heading the list; Chan rice noodles are served with white prawns, bean sprouts, peanuts and a tamarind sauce or their signature Siam@Siam Pattaya fried rice which offers a choice of chicken, crab meat, pork, prawns and a fried egg (B.290). Wanton Mille Feuille fuses culinary techniques from the west and east combining layers of crispy wanton with prawns, tofu, bean sprouts and tamarind sauce. We chose the special chicken skewers accompanied by peanut sauce and pickled sweet cucumber. Although satay-motivated the pieces are bigger forming a substantial skewer, the sauce however is a wonderful peanut concoction to slather and smear over the tender chicken. For burger lovers the beef patties here are gourmet in the extreme. Their house burger is 150 grams of minced prime Wagyu beef,
topped with cheddar cheese, crispy bacon and a fried egg and served in either a sesame or black ink bun. For even more luxury overload the Truffle Burger presents not only Wagyu beef but also black truffles with onion rings and potato wedges (B.420). A quintet of pizzas is showcased from Margarita through Milano, Krapraw seafood to Hawaiian and a connoisseur’s truffle paste with Parma ham, Parmesan and arugula. We then chose to sample pla thod nam pla (filet of sea bass, chili and green mango salsa). Deep fried to succulent crispness and offset by the sweetness of the mango salsa it was delightful. All the main courses shine through with chef’s global techniques. Dishes such as Australian beef strip loin with sticky rice and spicy tamarind sauce (B.300), stuffed baby squid with minced pork in Thai green curry, or slow cooked Australian lamb shank in Massaman curry with Thai sweet potatoes, roasted peanuts and shallots. The fantasy décor continues on the 24th and 25th floors where the theme moves to the mythical forest of The Roof Mixology inspired by the Himmapan legend. It is believed that these forests are located below the Buddhist heavens and are invisible to the eyes of mortals who can never approach or enter. The forest concept segues into The Roof restaurant where seasonal meals can be enjoyed under a gazebo or The Roof Wet Edition where evening dips in the pool can be enjoyed accompanied by tapas and molecular cocktails. Head further up to The Roof Chilled Edition where French or Thai cuisine is served in the open-air cinema to the backdrop of classic and newly released movies.

The Great Hornbill Bistro & Wine Shop Enjoy the vineyard experience without leaving the city
One of the first large scale wineries in Thailand (established in 1989) is the Khao Yai Winery at the edge of the National Park, 300 to 380 meters above sea level. Producing the famous PB Valley range of superior wines it was the birthplace of wine production in Thailand. The vineyard is a popular destination not only for the daily wine tasting tours but also for a visit to the famous The Great Hornbill Grill. Now, however, Bangkok can boast its very own mini vineyard and its own The Great Hornbill Bistro. Nestled into the heart of Bangkok on Sukhumvit Soi 39, it is a breath of fresh air in the city and you can escape to a vineyard without ever leaving the city. This sister venue to the one in Khao Yai follows the same principles right down to the country cottage feel and décor. Mick and I were invited to meet the personable manager, Heribert Gaksch, and to sample the dishes that make this unique bistro such a draw to tourists and locals alike. Heribert is an Austrian national and some items on his menu reflect his love for the cuisine of his homeland with house specials like roast pork knuckle. However, Chef Jom Vayupak’s culinary expertise is firmly in the mode of contemporary international and a whole profusion of modern dishes are included in his repertoire. Entering through the leafy terrace and into the rustic bistro with its barrique room housing genuine oak

with an assortment of vibrant leaves including rocket, cherry tomatoes, chukka wakame, fried bean curd, and grapes sprinkled with sesame seeds and accompanied by an interesting hoisin sauce. A brilliant healthy start to our Great Hornbill dinner. A delightfully crisp quesadilla followed tucked with a profusion of flavors including tomatoes, onion, spinach, mushroom, sour cream, chilli and cheese-it was sensational. Also served with another interesting salsa with the citrus element provided by pomegranate seeds and the more robust facet of miso and sesame oil--we loved it. For the next wine tasting we moved on to a PB Khao Yai Reserve Shiraz 2011. With its powerful elegance of cinnamon, nutmeg and oak we enjoyed it immensely. To accompany this wine we tasted another house specialty from their pizza menu, calzone. Perfect pizza dough had been folded and shaped like a half moon and stuffed with tomato and mozzarella it was liberally doused with an exceedingly flavorful arriabata sauce. Steamed clams followed served in a garlicky white wine sauce with lemon (B.190). The Great Hornbill Bistro with its vineyard setting and informal atmosphere is a super find in the city. From 11 a.m. all-day breakfasts are available. Organic egg recipes the likes of smoked salmon eggs Benedict (B.260), breakfast burritos or steak and eggs are top-sellers here. Ditto the spicy pork goulash (B.180), the GHB club sandwich, and the classic fish and chips. Thai fusion dishes complete the menu highlighting Chef Jom’s love of his homeland’s cuisine.

barrels it immediately appeals. The casual relaxed atmosphere invites informal gatherings and laid-back eating. With an outstanding selection of PB wines, many by the glass and an extensive menu to satisfy all the day’s needs from breakfast to dinner it is a veritable gem in the city. As we sipped the first pouring of the evening, a glass of mellow Chenin Blanc, we took time to read the many inspirational quotes that Jom has thoughtfully etched onto the windows. We commenced with a refreshing healthy salad packed

A different approach to control your weight by Thonglor Clinic
The homeopathic approach is a safe and natural approach to weight control and body contouring. Homeopathic principles of teaching the body to heal itself are well documented. Weight loss always involves the issue of skin tightening. As the weight drops, sometimes the skin loses some of its elasticity because it has been stretched for too long. Omeoformula preparations address this problem and provide a natural detoxification at the same time, returning you to a healthier, thinner self. Another complaint of weight loss is the lack of energy that often comes with dieting. We have less energy as the calories are reduced; the metabolic pathways tend to go into a sluggish mode. Omeoformula preparations help to control these energy fluctuations by teaching the body’s metabolic clock to keep on ticking at an optimal speed. The metabolic stimulation also helps to prevent disease by maintaining perfect balance in your system. What is Omeoformula 1-2-3? Omeoformula 1-2-3 is the answer for people who are looking for best method to lose weight safely and get healthy at the same time.
Omeoformula 1-2-3, based on homeopathy, is a natural healing method found by Dr. Samuel Hannemann in Germany 200 years ago. Since then, homeopathy has been spreading and is well accepted because of its efficacy without side effects for those in all ages and genders throughout all European countries and America. Omeoformula 1-2-3 treatment is based on natural ingredients such as multi-vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and cell extracts of different excretory, vascular, muscular, and hormonal systems. All these ingredients must be prepared trough homeopathic procedures; multiple dilutions are done with potentiation processes. A common saying in homeopathy is “LIKE cures LIKE.” This means that by recognizing the cause of the problem and its physical source, we can use the same element to cure it by diluting it into the minimum strength. In effect being a similar method as a vaccination! How does Omeoformula 1-2-3 works? Omeoformula 1-2-3 helps to reduce weight to firm the areas and works to detoxify your body at the source of the problem. Every natural ingredient in Omeoformula 1-2-3 will act in a different phase and work systemically to synergize each other into the best possible effects.
The four-phase action of Omeoformula 1-2-3 is: 1-Detoxification is the most important procedure to eliminate and release all waste and toxins from the body. These accumulate and are caught in our bodies, leading to obesity and excess weight gain, fat deposits, and cellulite. Omeoformula 1-2-3 will help supporting the functionality of physiological pathways of the liver, kidney, and lymphatic systems through a detoxifying process. The fewer toxins in our body, the better you can lose weight and healthier you are. 2-Increased metabolism is the second mode of action; Omeoformula 1-2-3 will accelerate these metabolic processes. The better your metabolic systems works, the better fat can be burned. 3-Good circulation will help transport all those nutrients in the blood to damaged cells. Thus, cells can regenerate themselves and health is returned. Nutrition and Cell therapy is the third mode of action with Omeoformula 1-2-3. This is achieved by supplying nutrients to the cells in the right quantities and proper sequence so that all cells can repair themselves and health can then be restored.
4-Restructuring is the fourth action of Omeoformula 1-2-3. After all the cells in the body are provided with all nutrients and cell tissues the needed, they will reorder themselves naturally. Your body will be rebalanced and recharge itself into top form. Your immune system will be strengthened to fight intrusive toxins and diseases. Your body will learn to eliminate fat and defend itself from being attacked by free radicals and the unhealthy environment--finally keeping you in good shape and healthier forever. How many Omeoformula 1-2-3 sessions are needed to produce good results? As there are many factors to weight gain, and each individual is different, the results of each treatment will vary in accordance with the individual and his/her build. Omeoformula 1-2-3 will help adjust the balance of your body by detoxifying, accelerating metabolism and blood circulation, supplying nutrition, and rejuvenating the whole body so that it can easily fight the causes of weight gain. The more efficiently your body can burn calories, the slimmer you will be.
All these processes will happen naturally without any ill effects. Omeoformula 1-2-3 will help you get rid of fatty deposits and keep you healthy forever. Look better, feel better! Each session consists of painless injections in problem areas and follow acupuncture lines. Omeoformula 1-2-3 is a natural based-treatment procedure that helps in reducing and adjusting your weight excellently and for the long term. We recommend that you take a weekly course of 7 to 10 times sessions, followed by 1 or 2 times a month after the course is finished to help maintain good results. Please consult expert physician before taking treatment. For more information contact Thonglor Clinic 038 252 055.

Your endocrine glands are the ones that provide hormones for your body, and yes, you definitely need them. Together with the nervous system and the immune system, the endocrine system helps the body to cope with different events and stresses. For example, Human Growth Hormone (HGH) from the pituitary gland determines your height (amongst other things). Too much HGH leads to gigantism, while too little HGH produces dwarfism.

3 Simple Steps to Styling a Beach Wavy Hair at Home by Gwen Vasquez, www.UrbaneWomen.com
If you love the way your hair looks when you’ve been to the beach or for a dip in the pool, but not so much the after effects of salt or chlorine in the water, or you can’t get away that often, you’ll be glad to know you can get the beach babe look without ever leaving the house. The change in your hair when you’ve been bathing or swimming is due to the extra moisture giving it a heavier texture, and that makes curly hair relax into waves while straight hair appears thicker and fuller with more volume. And in this article, we’re going to show you how you can get a beach wavy hair at home by using the right products after your daily shower… 1. Work It Wet Your hair doesn’t have to stay wet, and you don’t have to keep dampening it during the day, but it does help to start this look working on wet hair. That’s because the products will lock in moisture, and it’s easier to work them through your hair when it’s wet as compared to when it’s dry. 2. Dry It gently If you want your hair to be wet and wavy, you won’t get it by blasting your hair with the dryer on full heat. Work a heat protecting curling foam or mousse through your hair (just like when you’re applying shampoo to your hair) for an even coverage. Using a diffuser (a large flat disk with prongs or fingers that attaches to the nozzle of your hairdryer), take your time and dry your hair until it’s just damp. Don’t brush or comb your hair first, and allow your hair to curl into the cup of the diffuser. Then, use your fingers to tousle
each section into gentle waves, moving on before hair becomes completely dry. 3. Perfect Finish Give your head a quick blast with cool air to set your waves, and use a glossing spray instead of a normal hairspray to finish off. Glossing sprays add a fine layer of silicone that helps keep hair looking wet even when dry, and you don’t need to set the beach babe look in place. It’s a natural style that should have bounce and movement. As a final flourish, braid a few strands of ribbon into the side of your head, or add a flower behind your ear or a flower barrette, or tie long hair back with a headband, and you’re good to go, beach baby. For additional information on hair care, beauty, health, fitness, romance, skin care and more, go to www. urbanewomen.com

Is It Just Old Age or Is It Alzheimer’s disease?
A perfect “Home” for your retirement
by Pensiri Panyarachun, Absolute Living Thailand
How do you know if it is Alzheimer’s disease? As people get older it’s common for them to forget things. Elderly can often result in memory loss, whereas Alzheimer’s disease can cause loss of cognition, which includes things like memory, understanding, communication, and reasoning. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia among older people. Dementia affects one in 14 people over the age of 65 and one in six over the age of 80. So far, no one single factor has been identified as a cause for Alzheimer’s disease. It is likely that a combination of factors, including age, genetic inheritance, environmental factors, lifestyle and overall general health, are responsible.
Here is a checklist of common symptoms to help recognize the warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease: 15 Early Signs and Symptoms of Alzheimer’s 1. Always in bad mood and irritable: A person with Alzheimer’s disease may feel upset with normal things that happen in day-to-day living. They may feel sad with normal conversation with family members. 2. Memory loss that disrupts daily life: Memory loss is a basic symptom of Alzheimer’s. They may forget recently learned information or forget important dates or events. They may ask for the same information over and over. 3. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps: A person with Alzheimer’s disease loses things and is unable to go back over their steps to find them again. They may put things in unusual places. Sometimes, they may accuse others of stealing. 4. Leave home with no aim or destination: A person with Alzheimer’s may walk out of home with a purpose but suddenly lose their memory. They may find themselves standing in the middle of nowhere. It will be very dangerous if they have no contact devices with them.
Absolute Living Thailand introduces you “Long Lake Hillside Resort”, an ideal lifestyle concept of retirement resort located at Banglamung, Pattaya. We combine resort-style living with special care and emphasize on quality of life for seniors.
5. Poor judgment: A person with Alzheimer’s may experience changes in judgment or decision-making. They may have problems in calculation when buying things. Sometimes, they may pay less or over than the cost of things and confuse to calculate the change. 6. Confusion with time or place: People with Alzheimer's can lose track of dates, times, seasons and the passage of time. Sometimes they may forget where they are or how they got there. 7. Difficulty completing familiar tasks: People with Alzheimer’s often find it hard to do daily tasks. For example, they may have trouble cooking, ironing or driving to a familiar location. 8. Self-care less: Some people with Alzheimer’s may forget to do routine things such as taking shower, shampooing or changing clothes. They may wear the same clothes for 2-3 days without notice. 9. Changes in mood and personality: A person with Alzheimer’s can become confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful or anxious. They may be easily upset at home, with friends or in places where they are out of their comfort zone. 10. Withdrawal from work or social activities: A person with Alzheimer’s may remove themselves from friends, hobbies or social activities. They may have trouble remembering how to complete a favorite hobby or play favorite sport. 11. Problems with words in speaking and writing: A person with Alzheimer’s may have trouble following or joining a conversation. They may struggle with vocabulary; have problems finding the right word or call things by the wrong name. They

may stop in the middle of a conversation and have no idea how to continue or they may repeat themselves. 12. Repeating the same activity: They may do the same things again and again during the day. For example, they may start eating after they just finish the meals 30 minutes ago. 13. Trouble understanding visual images: Some people with Alzheimer’s may have difficulty in reading and judging distance or determining color or contrast. 14. Challenges in planning or solving problems: They may have trouble following a familiar recipe or keeping track of bills. They may have difficulty concentrating and take much longer to do things than they did before. 15. Sleep disorder and sleeping problem: Some Alzheimer’s may have problems getting to sleep at night. They often have problems with sleeping or may experience changes in their sleep schedule. While there are some common symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, it is important to remember that everyone is unique. Every person affected by the diseases is likely to experience it differently. So, people with Alzheimer’s will need more support from those who care for them. Eventually, they will need help with all their daily activities. What’s more, the Mini was designed with the selfie-taker in mind, thanks to its 180-degree screen and its narrow focal range, taking shots of you and your friends with

The fourth generation all-new HONDA CR-V
Big on looks smaller in size and flex-fuel compatible
Do you recall the first affordable SUVs (sport utility vehicles) in the kingdom of Thailand? No! Not those heavy, weird looking, modified PPVs (passenger by John K. Lindgren pickup vehicles), but Editor-in-chief: the first generation, carsanook.com utilitarian styled Japanese Honda CR-V with that bulky, grey spare wheel sticking out at the back. The Honda mini SUV was conceptualized as a budget alternative to the full-size large luxury SUVs; the black, big Ford Explorer V8s with men in black, CIA agents riding on the sideboards. Or the dark navy blue Range Rover Vogue SUVs driving the Queen, the British Royalty and Mr. and Mrs. Beckham. HONDA CR-V was launched at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show. Voila! A new compact SUV or 'soft-off roader' was born. An economical four-cylinder family-friendly, easy-to-drive part van and part saloon car. This new Honda was an instant hit all over the world. Five million units sold in 19 years. Still goin' strong! Fast forward to anno Domini 2014. The fourth generation Honda CR-V is now in showrooms. Pattaya Today took one unit out for a spin.
and motorways. Including Bangkok City, Sukhumvit Road, U-turns, traffic jams and underground parking. And the more I drove the new CR-V the more I liked it. The new Honda CR-V in Honda showrooms nationwide comes with two engine variants, the familiar 2.0-liter model and more powerful 2.4-liter topof-the-line drive. Priced 1.5 million baht.
nose section. In the front the new deep-set projector headlights and more aggressive three-bar chrome grille. Look at the back and large, angular crimson, tall tail-lights. Topping off the new CR-V is a shark-fin roof antenna which gives this family SUV a sharper and more menacing look. Interior Step in. Climb aboard. The cabin is comfortable, cavernous and quiet. High quality fit and finish with stylish black leather upholstery. The new dashboard integrates Japanese form and function with a five-inch color LCD intelligent-multi info display (i-MID)
Walk around impressions Twilight Blue Metallic is the new cool exterior color of our CR-V. The design DNA is still iconic Honda CR-V, but the fourth generation boasts a more aerodynamic stance with deeper sculpting of the body-lines and a bolder
with readouts of audio display, fuel consumption and an easy-to-read analogue clock (with hands). Since this is an SUV there are plenty of storage recesses, boxes, bins and cup holders. For bigger, bulkier items at the pull of a handle, the 60/40 split rear seats fold themselves flat to provide enough space for a family Korean refrigerator and a Japanese microwave oven plus Thai biodynamic groceries. Engine Let's pop the hood. Our top-of-theline 2.0 4WD model comes with the legendary Honda i-VTEC 2.0 liter power pack pumping out 155 horsepower. The Honda CR-V diesels have still not arrived in the kingdom – but the new CR-V runs on all fuel variants except cooking gas (CNG) and diesel i.e. E85, E20, Gasohol 91/95 and good ol' high octane petrol, aka benzene or 'gasoline' if you prefer. The Honda CR-V drinks about 11 kpl combined city/ highway driving. The drive train is very Honda. A smooth, five-speed auto transmission. Our 2-liter AWD (all wheel drive) demo unit delivers enough oomph – but if you want more there is also a 2.4-liter
version. But the extra power, speed and torque will cost you more in fuel consumption. Money in bank or money in the tank? You decide. The drive The driver’s seat comes with an excellent vantage point, like all SUVs. The French call it “Au volant la vue c’est vie”. Commanding view. As the driver I like the positioning of the gearstick in the middle of the dashboard. When you're in the F1 racing mood you can use the paddle shifters. I drove this car, sorry compact SUV for three days solid. Highways, byways, expressways
The verdict This is a rock-solid 5-seater family SUV with sexy, chic looks and fun to drive, too. Honda CR-V is still the benchmark in the compact SUV (crossover) segment in terms of standard features, comfort, safety, ride and resale value. “Honda the Power of Dreams” That's what the Honda tag line says. Well, dream on... or book test-drive at your nearest Honda dealer. All-new Honda CR-V

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
by: Magna Carta Law Office
Buying an Existing Business in Thailand What are the pros and cons of buying an existing business in Thailand vs. starting a new business? Buying an existing business can provide considerable benefits over starting a new business. But before you take over an existing business or start a new one, you should fully understand all the downsides related to both options. An existing business already has an established customer base, an established location, inventory and suppliers, trained employees and a reputation in the market; you only have to improve or keep up on what has already been achieved. Starting a business is certainly risky; that is why many new companies fail, having to deal with many uncertainties, especially with regards to profitability and customers’ response to the company’s products and/or services. When purchasing a business, the financial statement of the business somehow helps to establish a value for the company. The company may show significant receivables on the balance sheet, but the question is whether these can actually be collected or will eventually be written off as bad debts. When you start a company, you will be in full control and will be able to develop the business according to your own specifications. You can gather your own management team as you can have the freedom to select the best people you can find and those who can work well with you and as a team. When you buy a business, you absorb the people already in place and it takes time to get rid of the poor performers. In an existing company, the new owner may struggle to implement changes because the policies and procedures are already in effect. What are the significant concerns to ask a business owner before acquiring their business? Addressing the current business owner, these significant concerns can help you assess the existing business. -It is important to ask for all the documentation that can help you confirm the revenue history of the business. This will give you a clear idea of how the business has been doing over the past years. You may also want to find out how much money has been flowing in and out of the business on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. Proper accounting of the expenses and revenues will give you a good idea of the potential profitability of the business. -You need to be aware of any impending legal responsibilities associated with the business. Find out whether the existing owner is aware of any past, current or potential legal disputes related to the business operations. Find out if the business has any contract disputes, employment disagreements, leasing issues, or government regulation issues. -The business owner needs to provide a financial record of assets and liabilities of the business. Find out what the business owns, and what the business owes. Do the assets outweigh the liabilities? Is the owner aware of any financial assets or liabilities that do not appear in the company's records? -It is necessary for you to obtain from the business owner a copy of any written contracts entered into by the business so you can be aware of all contractual obligations.
- The business owner must be required to produce evidence that the business is properly registered with the government agencies in the district in which it operates. Ask the business owner for copies of all documents related to government taxes which include tax returns, tax ID numbers, and more. What can I do to safeguard my potential investment? Buying a business in Thailand involves a huge amount of money, so the legal and financial aspects of buying a business are extremely important. It is recommended to seek legal assistance and have a competent lawyer and accountant perform due diligence on the existing business you plan to take over. Due diligence is a procedure performed to review and verify all the relevant information about the business you are considering. A competent lawyer will be able to: -verify important details regarding the target company, such as its registration details, current directors, current shareholder list, recent financial statements, and any outstanding back taxes -assist in drafting and preparing the share transfer agreements and a contract detailing any other terms and conditions regarding the sale of the company -prepare the legal documents and government forms necessary to register the restructuring of the company Can I purchase only the business without purchasing the company running the business? Yes, the business alone can be purchased excluding the company running it. This option is beneficial to you as the buyer because the liabilities involving the first company will not be absorbed by the new business owner. But this option may need to consider such cases where there are business licenses that are difficult or no longer possible to obtain.

Expat Money Corner by Tim Whiteley
UK Budget 2014 – Pensions Introduction and article quoted from Brooklands Pensions The UK government's spring budget has signalled its intent to dramatically reform the way in which members of UK registered pension schemes take benefits. The key message from Chancellor George Osborne is flexibility; budget 2014 announces "radical reforms to give people greater freedom over how they access their pension savings and to support savers at every stage of their lives". These reforms will radically overhaul the UK defined contribution pension market as the UK government "introduce the most fundamental reform to the way people access their pensions in almost a century by abolishing the effective requirement to buy an annuity". Members of personal pension schemes, like Self-Invested Personal Pensions (SIPPs) and Small Self Administered Schemes (SSAS) will have greater flexibility over how they "access their pension, and will support savers to make the long-term decisions that ensure they can benefit from a better and more secure financial future.” The expert technical team at Brooklands Pensions have summarised the key announcements and assessed the impact that these will have on pension savers. Summary of Key Points Effective from March 27, 2014 • Increase capped drawdown limit from 120 percent to 150 percent of an equivalent annuity for all drawdown pension years starting on or after March 27, 2014 • Reduced flexible drawdown minimum income requirements from £20,000 to £12,000 • Increase from £18,000 to £30,000 the total pension wealth that people can have under trivial commutation rules. • Increase of the small pension pots limit, raising the size of a pension pot that can be taken as a lump sum from £2,000 to £10,000 Effective from April 2015 • From age 55, full withdrawal of pension fund (after 25 percent tax free lump sum) permitted and taxed at marginal rate of income tax, rather than current rate of 55 percent • Providers of defined contributions pension schemes will have a duty to provide free and impartial face-to-face guidance at retirement to their members. Also Announced.... The government also has announced consultations to amend legislation to the current tax rules that apply to pensions upon death. They believe that the 55 percent tax charge is too high and will engage with stakeholders to review these rules. As a result of the government's plan to increase the flexibility of defined contribution pension schemes, they have announced restrictions on the portability of public sector defined benefit (final salary) pensions and will therefore legislate to remove the option to transfer benefits away from these schemes. Whilst they have said that in principle they wish to extend greater choice for members of defined benefit schemes in the private sector, they are yet to announce what this will be. The government also will legislate to provide Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs broader powers to prevent pension liberation with greater control over the registration and de-registration of pension schemes. The legislation will provide immediate effect of these powers from March 20, 2014. The government will consult on ways to give equivalent treatment to QNUPS (Qualifying Non-UK Pension Schemes) and UK registered pension schemes to remove opportunities to avoid inheritance tax. What does this all mean? The increase in the capped drawdown limit from 120 percent to 150 percent of an equivalent annuity, will only really be relevant to members already in drawdown, or plan to commence drawdown between March 27, 2014 and April 2015. For members that are already in drawdown, the increase will not be effective until their next pension income anniversary. From April 2015, all members in a defined contribution scheme will be able to access their entire pension from age 55. This also includes those already in a pre-existing drawdown arrangement. Individuals will have the option to select the level of income they choose to receive and will be taxed at their marginal rate. For those of pension age who do not want to wait until April 2015 to access their defined contribution pension fund, the Chancellor has reduced the minimum secured income requirement for flexible drawdown from £20,000 to £12,000. Therefore, should a member be in receipt of a secure pension (i.e. state pension in payment, annuity, final salary pension) of at least £12,000, they can select an uncapped income of their choosing, which will be taxed at their marginal rate.

Hospitality Group managing director Mike Batchelor, “especially given that it is a strongly trading asset with solid growth prospects due to its exceptional location, spectacular views, and a globally-recognized brand.” He noted that average occupancy is over 70 percent year-round.

High Season! What High Season? This is the second year in a row that Pattaya and the Eastern Seaboard have seen a relatively tame high season as concerns the local real estate market, on the surface anyway. No booming sales and property buyers have all but disappeared leaving us with a condo boom that has lost 50 percent of its market share with the absence of Thai buyers and lost a lot of its lustre. Or has it? True, those boom town high seasons from a couple years back have disappeared, but then again it really does seem that Pattaya and the Eastern Seaboard have evolved to the point where it is pretty busy year round now. With the emerging markets coming in behind the huge Russian market we are now seeing lots of Indians vacationing here and, more recently, they are shopping for properties. We also have Middle Eastern vacationers and property buyers, and the long awaited Chinese boom is starting to slowly show its presence for sure. With this diversity of people with their differing holiday cycles we are now seeing an Eastern Seaboard that has vacationers year round and property shoppers year round. It’s almost as if it is ‘good season’ year round with peoples of varying cultures always present on the beaches and shopping on the streets of Pattaya and the vicinity, and that means shopping for condos and houses as well. Knowing that approximately 50 percent or more of the properties were being bought
by local Thais and having that market all but disappear during this period of political unrest could be absolutely devastating to the Eastern Seaboard Pattaya real estate sector but the house and condo market are still moving forward with sales being made and new developments coming onto the market place. One thing that I am noticing is that the vacuum left by the disappearance of the Thai buyers has been taken over by some pretty confident investors and I’m not just talking about one or two condo unit investors. No, I’m talking about one or two condo floor investors and as well multiple house investors. Now in times like this when the country is in turmoil, Thais are not buying properties here as much as before we could be in for a really tough time, but we are not and so far so good! Is this confidence being displayed by willing investors a good sign and is it sustainable? Only time will tell, but having been the one that published the ‘O’ word (oversupply) more than a year ago, and being the one that announced at the April 2013 Government Housing Banks Real Estate Information Center’s seminar in Bangkok that the Pattaya condo boom was over, I must admit I am surprised at how well the market is still chugging along. When investors are willing to put millions of baht down betting on the future of our real

Pattaya’s perpetual high season estate market and developers are also willing to invest huge amounts of money to start up their new condo and housing development projects, that’s a great confidence builder and makes one very positive about the Eastern Seaboard’s future. Now I am well noted for being bullish and very confident about the Eastern Seaboard’s real estate sector and I still am. With all that is going on around Thailand it spells nothing but continued success for the entire country, including Pattaya and the Eastern Seaboard. Almost every single economic indicator for the big players in Thailand’s industry sector and the big players in the Thailand real estate development game are looking great. There is huge investment money coming from Japan, Singapore and others who share the confidence that Thailand really is an industrial hub for ASEAN and Asia as a whole. Chiang Mai is absolutely booming with progress in tourism and in residential, commercial, and industrial project development, and other resorts like Koh Samui, Hua Hin, Khaow Yai, and Phuket also are doing well. Real estate development is doing so well that in the last two years the Thailand Property Awards has added Khaow Yai and Chiang Mai to their awards list for villas and condos, and this year’s 2014 Thailand Property Awards has just added Phuket’s holiday paradise resort neighbors Krabi and Phang Na to the growing list of successful real estate marketplaces. So the overall feeling and perception is actually looking very promising for Thailand’s real estate business, but short term are there any signs of panic or confidence loss amongst local property owners?

There have been a few, not many, but a few property shoppers that have balked and put their purchases on hold but most foreigners still seem willing to follow through with their purchases despite the political turmoil. Now with so many new properties, particularly condominiums, coming on the market, one indicator that is a bit alarming here in Pattaya is the resale market--both second hand condo re-sales as well as many brand new condo re-sales. What I am starting to notice is some of the second hand re-sales and new construction re-sales are starting to crack in their pricing and I am seeing some unseen prices surfacing on the market. I recently received an email from an owner of a condo in one of the area’s (Pratamnak Hill) most popular condos which is very well located and one of the best rental buildings in South Pattaya selling their apartment at an asking price of 45,000 baht a square meter; this is a prime building. In another top luxury condominium building right on the beach, a property owner is selling his condominium right now at a little over 50,000 baht per square meter; that is 30 to 40 percent less than this building’s units had reached during the 2003 to 2007 condo boom. So once again, with all these thousands and thousands of new condos coming on line over the coming 12, 24 and 36 months, we do need to keep a close eye on the supply issues for the short term. That is why long term I say, ‘High season. What high season?’ It’s always a high season in Pattaya!

The many retirements of
Barry Kenyon by Francis Ortiz
It was just one job after another, he says UK expat Barry Kenyon has had so many jobs in Pattaya that he has almost lost count. He started off teaching English as a second language in the 1990s and then started Pattaya bridge club which he sold in 2001. For many years he was the British honorary consul in the resort before retiring in 2010, but carried on until 2013 as assistant information officer at the Immigration Bureau. Not to mention his being the deputy editor of Pattaya Today from 2003 to 2008.
n
ow 72, Barry says he’s certainly slowing down, although he still writes freelance articles and has just completed a book, Honorary Consul Pattaya, which was published as an e-book available on Amazon Kindle and is now a paperback available in Thailand and soon worldwide. (See the instruction at the end of this article for a free copy). He adds that he maintains his role with the Tourist Police as the media officer dealing mainly with press enquiries and video shoots. He recently completed, with Siamese Vision Media Company, a video on the work in Pattaya of the Foreign Tourist Police Assistants. “So many expats I know become bored with their life in Pattaya after they realize that weekly trips to the golf club and regular visits to the pub simply aren’t enough to give structure to their life,” he says. “There have been times in the past when I have had too much on my plate, but I feel that’s better than being bored stiff just waiting for the sun to go down.” He adds that he has never
deliberately sought any of the jobs he has held. “Actually they just fell into my lap.” Born in war-torn Britain in 1941, Barry was brought up in Lancashire and attended Colne Grammar School and Liverpool University where he gained a first-class honours degree in classics (Latin and Greek) and ancient history. Realizing that these subjects were not much in demand in the 1960s, he took a further degree and postgraduate diploma in sociology and criminal law. He spent much of his working life in colleges in the UK and overseas, and quit in 1992 to start a new life in Vietnam as an English language teacher-trainer. “This plan fell through when the college in Hanoi accidentally burned down, so I fell back on exotic Thailand and the alluring Pattaya.” He started working for the British embassy in 1997 after another disaster. He founded Pattaya bridge club in 1994 and had to contact the embassy
for advice after one of the members died suddenly of a heart attack in the Le Cafe Royal where the club then met. “The embassy told me that they had nobody at that time to deal with Pattaya emergencies, and that was the beginning of a 13- or 14-year relationship.” He adds that Pattaya was a very different city in those days with many more

Brits and no Russians or Chinese to speak of. “The other differences were that Thailand was a good deal cheaper than it is now, there were fewer street crimes and the property boom hadn’t started.” Very recently, he published his memoirs, Honorary Consul Pattaya, which he describes as nearly 14 action-packed years in the tourist hotspot. “I felt it’s a story worth telling if only because it reflects what can go wrong when you holiday abroad or become an expat. Over the years I dealt with down-and-outs, the bankrupt, the sick, the jailed and the dead.” It’s also important for people to know what the embassy can do in these circumstances – frankly a lot less than is generally understood. In my later
years with the embassy, the government in London became more and more dominant over what you could do - and what you could not - for clients. I was even told I was working too hard and over-servicing. By 2010 I was glad to quit.” There is also quite a lot of humor in the book as Barry details the very odd requests from British visitors, including the recipe for Princess Di’s wedding cake and a plea to help find Elvis Presley who was believed to have escaped from his coffin and was living above Burger King on Beach Road. “It’s all in a day’s
work. I was attacked by ladyboy thieves while carrying out my duties for the embassy and even managed to stay upright during an autopsy observation when other witnesses were fainting.” Another weird incident was when he was asked to intervene in the matter of a large billboard on Sukhumvit Road showing Adolf Hitler welcoming visitors to Pattaya with a stiff-armed salute. “I had to persuade the local authorities that Hitler makes a bad advertising model for a fun city like Pattaya and is completely unacceptable anyway because of his involvement in the death of 50 million people in the early 1940s.” The book Honorary Consul Pattaya also recounts several of the criminal cases in which Barry was involved. They include Colin Martin, the Irishman who spent many years in a Thai jail for murder, who later wrote the bestseller, Welcome to Hell. There was also Michael Stacpoole, the bagman for British politician Jeffrey Archer, who ended up being deported from Thailand for visa overstay, and Paul Cryne, who committed a murder in UK while on bail in Thailand for allegedly being involved in one here. There are key sections in the book on the decline and fall of the British consulate office in Jomtien – it closed little more than a year after Barry’s retirement, the attempts by the gutter press in UK to discredit him after he was awarded the MBE, and insights into the role of the Tourist Police Foreign Volunteers on Walking Street. An amusing final chapter looks at the differing roles of honorary consuls around the world. Asked if he has any regrets on his 20 years plus in Pattaya, Barry says his failure to learn Thai properly is the main one. “It’s so easy in Pattaya to rely on the fact that many people speak English that I fell into that particular trap. On the other hand, I never expected to spend so long here. But now I couldn’t envisage living anywhere else.” “Pattaya, warts and all, is still a great city.” (In Thailand, a complimentary copy of Honorary Consul Pattaya is available by contacting Kathy Reyes on 0896079850)

Tips & Advice you may have to pay the exit fee which is not included in your ticket. Also Cambodian nationals sometimes have to fill in a form.
Visa fees at Vientiane Q: How much is the visa fee to enter Laos at Vientiane airport? A: It depends on your nationality – between US$20 and US$50. The Laos government recently announced that Russian visitors are to be free. Discussions are still underway to have joint visas with other ASEAN partners, but details are still unclear. Multiple entry to Cambodia Q: As I visit Phnom Penh several times a year, I am investigating the possibility of a multi-entry visa but I’m not making much progress. There does not seem to be any provision at the airport for anything other than singles. A: You could inquire at the Immigration Bureau opposite Phnom Penh airport, but most people contact one of the tourist and visa shops on the main tourist strip by the river in Phnom Penh. A one-year multiple entry will cost you just short of US$300 but no special documentation is required. However, the multi-entry is only available as a business visa (not tourist), so make sure you obtain a business visa for US$25 the next time you enter by air. If you buy a tourist visa, no can do, we are told.
Age limit for a retirement visa Q: I know the minimum age for a Thai one-year retirement visa is 50, but many people have retired from work before that time, so is there any plan to reduce the age barrier? To give one example, there is no such minimum age restriction in the Philippines. A: This is a commonly raised question, but there is no plan to lower the age in Thailand, according to the Immigration Bureau. They point out that the age dropped from 60 to 55 and then 50 some years ago. The easiest one-year visa for “young” long stayers in Thailand is probably the education visa, unless you are married to a Thai spouse. Arrest at the airport Q: I have a two weeks overstay here in Thailand and I am sick with worry that I will be arrested at the airport or that my name will be placed on a banned list. Do I have any alternative to put my mind at rest? A: You will not be arrested as long as you have the cash for the fine, namely 500 baht per overstay day. Nor will you be banned from Thailand. You could pay the fine at a local Immigration office but, in that case, you will need to buy a further week’s extension for 1,900 baht. The important point is that short overstays, of say a few weeks, can be sorted out by paying – period!
Airport question in Cambodia Q: I have noticed that you no longer pay the US$25 exit fee on leaving Phnom Penh or Siem Reap airport on your way out. This is because the fee is now included in your ticket. Yet the office to collect these fees is still open. Why is that? A: There are one or two budget airlines where
Waiting for passport Q: I dropped my passport in the washing machine and it is ruined. I have applied at my embassy for a new one but I will be in overstay by the time it is ready. Will I be liable for the fine as I have no choice but to wait. A: You are responsible for the overstay at 500 baht per day no matter what the cause of the problem. You could discuss with your embassy the possibility or otherwise of an emergency travel document which is usually a much quicker procedure.
Richard de Vere dies in Thailand One of Britain’s best-liked illusionists died in Chonburi General Hospital last month at the age of 46, following a heart attack and 10day illness while on holiday in Thailand. The star is remembered as a master of illusion at Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s Mystique show for many years. He was cremated at South Pattaya’s Wat Chaimongkol with arrangements made by long-term friends Ray Cornell and Darrell Bevers who run the Venue Residence in the Jomtien Complex. Born in Bolton in 1967, Richard was the grandson of a former member of parliament for Bolton West. His interest in magic started at the age of eleven when he began doing tricks for his playground chums. He worked at Liverpool’s Royal Court theatre as a pantomime dame from 1989 and became a friend of the late comedian Bernie Winters who trained him and bequeathed his much-loved St Bernard, Schnorbitz. The animal accompanied Richard on many of his later stage appearances. Richard starred in his own UK-based show, Beyond Belief, from 2008 to 2013. He told a Lancashire newspaper in 2006, “With a lot of
practice, illusion becomes a skill and the key is to make it interesting for people to want to go on watching.”
Snap Judgment Conspiracy theories everywhere The mysteries surrounding the disappearance of Malaysian Airline flight 370 were tailor-made to fit any number of conspiracy theories. Actually, the North Koreans diverted and captured it to increase their leverage in world affairs. Or the Chinese themselves want to show everyone–eventually– that they are cleverer than the United States. Not to mention the likelihood that aliens from outer space did the dreadful deed as a precursor to their forthcoming invasion of planet Earth this coming Christmas. Even the current political impasse in Thailand is the subject of many conspiracy theories on the internet. One view says that the whole thing has been engineered by China (or America in some versions) to enable that imperialist power to take over the Thai state. Another theory speculates that the whole trouble has been engineered by the Thai military to produce such a dreadful mess that a military coup will scarcely be opposed. Still another postulates that the political conflict has been created by black magic or supernatural forces intervening to punish Thailand for its craven immorality and corruption. How do we explain the popularity of conspiracy theories, especially amongst devotees of the social media? Well, gossip is the world’s most popular hobby and there’s no better place to exchange it with your friends and allies than on Facebook or whatever. Trying to impress your contacts with more and more outlandish opinions is all grist to the rumor mill. We feel a lot better when we share our perspectives with other people. In fact, many conspiracy devotees hold flatly contradictory opinions at one and the same time. For example, people can believe both that Princess Diana faked her own death and yet also concur that the British royal family arranged her demise in the Paris tunnel. Those who believe Adolf Hitler escaped from his Berlin bunker in 1945 are happy to accept that he spent his final years on the moon or in Paraguay or in a Worthing tea shop, or even all three. The more the merrier. Most of us feel powerless in the world of today. It’s complex and there’s little we can do to change it except to turn up at the ballot box once in a while. But voting can’t be that important, said Mark Twain or it might have been Disraeli, otherwise the powers-that-be wouldn’t allow you to do it in the first place. Consequently, when a disaster occurs such as a terrorist attack, an outbreak of disease, or a missing airliner, some of us go hunting to find the malicious agent responsible for the whole thing. It doesn’t help much if your critics call you a crackpot. Contrary opinions only reinforce what you were thinking in the first place. Thus, if you believe that the anti-cigarette campaign in most countries is actually an excuse to reduce spending on health care by crash-strapped governments, you can carry on puffing in the glad knowledge that the weed isn’t doing you any harm at all. To give a contemporary Thai example, if you believe that Suthep’s street demonstrators in Bangkok are throwing giant fire crackers and grenades at each other to try and increase public sympathy for his cause, you will absolutely reject any proof that the other side was responsible for creating the almost nightly violence. Videos can be faked and selfies can be photoshopped. There is also the reassuring thought that some conspiracy theories are actually correct. The torpedoed Lusitania in 1915 did indeed carry weapons and shells in spite of contemporary denials. They are there for all to see scattered on the sea bed. Republican officials did indeed bug the Democratic headquarters at the insistence of president Nixon even though he went blue in the face denying the rumors at the time. And it’s certainly true that Queen Elizabeth the First was in fact a man. She went prematurely bald, employed a barber to shave her every day, and was sometimes observed standing up in the privy.

PSC Charity Classic a huge success by William Macey
Recent Race Updates: 2014 F1 News: The new turbocharged V-6 F1 with their associated hybrid energy technology and the new sound from the engine package has a lot of fans and promoters disappointed. The first F1 race in Australia 2014-style is a lot quieter, with a throaty growl replacing the wailing scream of the V10 and V8 eras. Even on TV, it’s quite a soulless feeling, compared to the howl of a sound that used to fill the airwaves. The FIA, F1, and the teams hope to fine-tune the sound in the future (of course at a cost). Nico Rosberg won the Australia race, and deservedly so, however the excitement is lost when we have to look to future races with the new F1 engine package. Compare and imagine if you went to a rock concert and they turned down their music by 50 percent, would the fans be disappointed? Probably, the sensory overload and the experience just wouldn’t be the same. The 18th year of the eagerly awaited Pattaya Sports Club Charity Classic Tournament was held on 21 March at the Burapha Golf Resort. This event takes weeks of planning and preparation and Joe Mooneyham, golf chairman, worked hard to make this a most successful event. The competition was a two-person scramble with prizes on every hole and for the top-10 pairs. Two days after the official announcement the list was full and Joe had to increase the field from 144 players to 160, yet there was still a waiting list. In addition to prizes for every hole, there were raffle prizes which included green fees for four people from the EGA golf courses, golf clubs from Pattaya City Golf, including TaylorMade SLDR Driver, TaylorMade Burner Driver from Mick Beresford, two ball putter from Eddie Bielby, two bottles of Johnnie Walker from Tara Pattana International School, a dozen Titleist Pro V 1 x golf balls from Kyle Roadley, and a 60/40 split for the final raffle ticket drawn.
Singha Corp came through again with tremendous support, providing Sanvo Sports energy drinks to everyone prior to teeing off as well as providing golf and shoe to the winners, shirts and umbrellas to the other top-10 winners. They also furnished free drinks during the presentation which, as you might guess, proved popular with everyone. Mike, Burapha general manger, presented the C & D nines in pristine condition and as president of the EGA also helped make this an outstanding event. In near-perfect golfing weather, the overall scores were very good. Another great supporter of this event was Chris Balzli of Sinto Shirts who provided 150 shirts free of charge. Joe thanked all who participated in today’s tournament with a special thanks to the Sponsors: Platinum Sponsors: Singha, EGA, Sinto Shirts Gold Sponsors: Jackalope, Pattaya City Golf Hole Sponsors: The Golf Club; The Player’s Lounge; Classroom

great portion of our regulars. In addition to these carries there were another 12, mostly over water and with many elevated greens the golfers were in for a tough day. Carts are compulsory and the 10-minute ride to the first tee showed the necessity. Word of warning to future golfers, there is only one drinks hole after the fourth and you come round again after the 13th so stock up. Another quirk of this course is that two fairways are shared and if your caddy doesn’t speak English too well it can be a bit confusing. Mine host, Buff, was having a good day until the fourth fairway where a beautiful bunker shot landed two feet from the pin, unfortunately it was the wrong one! A lot of the greens are not visible from the tee so having to play blind and not knowing any potential problems wasn’t what I would call fun, a subsequent visit should be easier. The course itself is very scenic, well manicured with good fairways and greens, although the latter
erred on the slow side. The combination of carries, and lack of course knowledge inevitably contributed to low scoring from the 14 golfers. Only Colin Greig in first place on 38 points and Peter Hapgood in second, a point behind, managed to master the problems. Even our tame golf pro, Keith Smithson, could only muster 30 points partially due to water sneakily placed down a steep bank behind a green. A fourth course is under construction next to Silky Oaks but the majority of our fraternity are still struggling with numbers 2 and 3. Tips & Advice QUICK TIP Questions posted in today’s Ask Andy column are holdovers from the past; they either were inappropriate for a do-it-yourself column about problems around the home, or they simply were inappropriate. Nevertheless, this one time we deal with them in our annual April 1 edition of Pattaya Today. Be warned that this column is rated R (for “Ridiculous”). Long- time Andy readers will note that the names of some of those submitting questions have been omitted, and for good reason: They walk the streets of Pattaya. Pattaya Tales Dear Andy, I see that Pattaya’s former British Honorary Consul Barry Kenyon has a new book out called Honorary Consul Pattaya. (Coincidence? I don’t think so.) Anyway, I fondly recall Barry’s having been very helpful when he volunteered at the Immigration Office in Jomtien, and that he has had a long, long career and vast experiences in Thailand, well beyond his years with Pattaya Today and his activities with the Volunteer Tourist Police here. Knowing that he is still your colleague, I was wondering if you could tell me how old Barry is? Reggie Old Barry is fine. Thanks for asking. Conversion I’m having trouble with measurements as I redesign my house. Can you tell me how to change centimeters to meters? Yes. Take out “centi.” Ask Another Question Do you know how to easily remove floor tiles without breaking them? Gino Yes. Dog Gone Economy We’ve got two large dogs that are eating us out of house and home, particularly now that the price of dog food we buy has climbed to 99 baht. Wow! That’s almost 700 baht in dog money. Not So Fast Dear Andy, my boyfriend told me that the speed of light is almost 300,000 kilometers per second, but what is the speed of dark? Anon PS--I am a blonde, so to help me understand your answer please type slow. S…L…O…W. Sing-A-Song Why do hummingbirds hum? Louise Because they don't know the words.
Red meat is not bad for you Fuzzy green meat is bad for you. Hard Water; Easy Answer I see many questions in your column talking about hard water. What exactly is hard water? Ice. Criminal Vision Andy, what is the difference between robbing and burglarizing? Robbing is stealing money or property from a person or a place. Burglarize is what the robber sees with. Faux Kitchen Funds Khun Andy, some time I see story in Pattaya Today talk about counterfeiters go monkey house. You can tell to me what mean counterfeiters? Nok Counterfeiters are workers who put together kitchen cabinets. Your Serve What is the easiest way to prepare a sit-down dinner for 20 people? Judy Hire a caterer.
Plumber of the Month
argumentative and I don’t know how to deal with that. I was hoping you would suggest some ideas that would help me. Al There are two theories related to arguing with women, Al. Neither of them is effective. Song of Six Pence I’ve been looking at property, Andy, and have trouble understanding land measurements. Back in Europe we used hectares, which is a term used here, but in Thailand they also refer to something called a “rai.” What is a rai? Rene A rai is 400 square wah, the equivalent of 4 ngan. When You Gotta Go Andy, I got a leak in my sink. Karl OK, Karl, go ahead. Ant Rant When a reader asked you how to keep ants out, you advised making a chalk line because ants would not cross chalk. I did that and ants in my apartment don’t even pause before marching over the line with no fear. What’s up with that? Van Some ants haven’t gotten the message yet, Van. Hapless Jaywalker At the busy intersection near my house there is no traffic light, and almost every day a man is hit by a car or motorbike. What can be done about that? John Tell that man to stay out of the street. Save the Planet I’ve got an enlarged prostate, Andy, and must pee about every hour. My wife complains that I’m wasting too much water each time I flush the toilet. What can I do? Max Pee in the shower.

In-Laws Out My in-laws from Udon Thani visit us about once a month and invariably family arguments arise which alienates everyone for the next month or so, then they come back to Pattaya for another round in the battle. What do you suggest?
Remind them why everyone loves Santa Claus; he visits people only once a year. Take a Walk My dog is getting very fat, Andy. What does that mean? It means you’re not getting enough exercise. Age-Old Question Why, Andy, do you often promote the use of vinegar? Alice That’s really a two-part question, Alice. The first part is, “Why?” That’s a question that has been asked for millennia, particularly by philosophers and clerics. We don’t have space enough in this column to respond to such a profound question. As to your second question, “do you often promote the use of vinegar?” Yes, I do. Stuck in the Muddle Khun Andy, now I study English with my wife. She ask what mean “dilemma.” I cannot answer. Maybe you can tell to me? Somchai I can’t define the word for you, Somchai, but I can give you an example of what a dilemma is: Imagine yourself in bed with a beautiful, naked young lady on one side and a katoey on the other. Who would you turn your back on? Communication Problem Please tell my wife she is wrong when she says there is no need to wash fruit and vegetables before eating them inasmuch as you must peel them anyway. Felix Tell her yourself. Young Love I’m getting tired of so many articles in newspapers and on TV about pedophiles in Pattaya and, in fact, throughout Thailand. They are a menace and I abhor them. There, I’ve said my piece. Fritz You can say lots of bad things about pedophiles, Fritz, but at least they drive slowly past schools. Hope you’re all having a good April Fool’s Day. --Handy Andy

Dah’s success story
Some years ago the Mercy Children’s Home took in a pretty little girl named Dah. Her parents had separated and her older sister was unable to care or her. It was a heartbreaking time for the girls, as they were very close. They kept in touch over the years. When her sister became more financially secure, she requested that she be allowed to have Dah live with her. After doing some checking and determining that the sister offered a secure environment, the home prepared to say goodbye. It was a happy/sad day for everyone; Dah was
leaving many friends who would miss her happy, smiling face and sunny disposition. However, since she was a scholarship student, we knew that we would still be able to keep in touch regularly. We had always felt that she had a natural talent for art. This was borne out recently when Dah’s school chose her to enter an art competition sponsored by the United Nations on the importance of water in the world. She won her age (10-12 years old) group with a beautifully-crafted and thought-provoking piece showing how one person’s
actions impacts on so many others. The prize was an allexpense paid trip to New York and a monetary prize to be shared with the school. Dah was proud to be able to help her family, and we are proud to share her success story. Currently in her last year of high school, she hopes to continue her education where her artistic abilities will be nurtured; her goal is to become a gifted artist and environmentalist. Dah has determination and talent; we pray that circumstances do not

rob her of her dream. We would love to be writing the story of her first exhibition and saying with pride, “Dah was once one of our children.”
PSC provides essential water to students by William Macey There are 90 plus schools in and around Pattaya which includes 11 major schools in the city. Many are in isolated areas and the children come from poor families struggling to make ends meet and finding it difficult to provide everything a child needs to complete their education which includes compulsory uniforms. Wat Nong Ket Noi School is but one example and Pattaya Sports
Club was asked to solve a big problem which concerned the drinking water. There are 600 students at the school and, when an extension is complete, the problem becomes even greater for there will be an additional 150 children. Clean drinking water is vital for everyone, particularly young children whose bodies are still developing. So it was
an easy decision for the PSC committee. The problems were immediately obvious: the filters had passed their sell-by date, the taps and the refrigerated water faced the sun most of the day, and the taps had broken. We noticed something that could help solve the problem: while there were no taps to supply drinking water, there were a dozen taps that allowed the children to wash their hands and faces. New filters were installed
on the existing, outdated filters were replaced, and additional taps were installed at both ends of the school. Furthermore, a roof will be built to protect the refrigerated tank from the sun’s rays. The school’s director and most of the children welcomed YWCA representative Noy and representatives of PSC. It is a joy to experience the gratitude shown by everyone at the school for the efforts of PSC and YWCA.
Volunteers clean Cosy Beach...again Fifty volunteers from local companies, Green Pattaya, and Pattaya City Hall cleaned Cosy Beach of three truck loads of rubbish. The cleaning crew brought their own food to share, and food also was provided by Nova Group, Siam Bayview Hotels, and Green Leaf Hotels. Kingdom Property provided water. A month earlier, Green Pattaya had removed a truckload of rubbish from a Cozy Beach gully, from which a further three trucks of rubbish were carried away this time. The gully seems to invite beachgoers to deposit their refuse in the dip, which quickly appears to be a garbage dump. Even while the Green Pattaya team was having lunch, nearby tourists were discarding their rubbish in the gully. Before the next clean-up, Green Pattaya will work with City Hall to erect signs and
to talk with the people who make money from the beach. Volunteers are welcome to join the effort from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 5 at Cosy Beach with Radchada “Toy” Chomjinda, director of HHN Foundation Thailand.

Youth Focus CALL! Why is it so important in ESL? by Bhavini Vara, Mooltripakdee International School
Today I am going to talk about CALL, what is that you ask? Well it means computer assisted language learning. I think that the role of technology in the 21st century has become very important in the classroom for many reasons. I believe
often with the students as it allows me to present any topic in many different, fun and interesting ways. What I have found is that the students enjoy learning English when we use the computer as we play interactive games and songs, for example, that are fun and educational at the same time, making the learning process much more pleasant. One example of a CALL class is where we use the Oxford Owl reading website where I choose a book appropriate for that particular group of ESL students. The book is projected on
that it can help to motivate and aide students on their ESL journey while opening their eyes to a new world and way of learning that is very different from traditional learning resources such as books. In my classroom I use the internet and computer quite
the projector so that all the children are always focused on the same page. We read aloud together and I help the children with vocabulary that they are not familiar with or have difficulty pronouncing. After reading the book together I play the audio section for each page while we review the book. In some cases we play games related to the book we have just read.
This ensures that the children have understood what they have read. This also gives us the opportunity to review again new vocabulary and sight words that the students have come across. I believe that these CALL classes are a success as I can see that the children enjoy them and, most importantly, that they took another small step in their ESL journey.
PTA and teachers had set up food stalls that presented visitors with choices of food from all over the world, including French snails, crocodile, and pork pies. Students then put on a spectacular show ranging from Thai dances to dazzling Spanish dances, and from a stunning Chinese fan dance to a stupendous Indian dance. The day ended with some K-Pop
performers and a Ceilidh band, which had everyone tapping their feet. After such stunning performances, Friends of Garden PTA arranged a lavish and delicious lunch for all guests with more foods from around the world. For more information on GIS, based in Ban Chang, visit www.gardenrayong.com.
GIS celebrates International Day by Abhigyan Khullar, Garden International School Garden International School has students and staff from more than 40 countries, and its International Day was a huge celebration of this diversity. Every year GIS holds an International Day; this year the school extended the tradition to an entire week of activities making it more fun and memorable. Students
could choose from cuisines from China, Spain, Russia, and Italy. Not only this, but head of Languages, Ms Clifton, who was a key co-ordinator of the event, also added fun activities. All secondary students were divided into 20 teams (representing countries not currently at GIS) and were given daily challenges such as making a poster for a
given country and building famous monuments of that country from recyclable material.
There was also a team quiz and team sports like plank racing, human camel racing, and volley blanket. Perhaps the most fun was the cat-walk competition where students had to dress in the native clothing of a given country. To end this exciting week on International Day, a Samba Band kicked off the event followed by short extracts of all the national anthems of countries represented at GIS. After this, Friends of Garden
Dr Seuss Day by Mark Beales, Garden International School To celebrate Dr Seuss Day, students and teachers from Garden International School (GIS) got dressed up and read many of his amazing stories.
The GIS Prefects chose six of the famous characters and joined in the fun; they even got to eat specially-made green eggs and ham at break time, in honor of one
of Dr Seuss's most famous stories. Primary students read several tales and joined in activities in the library and in their classrooms. For more details on GIS, based in Ban Chang, visit www.gardenrayong.com.

You & Your Pets Elephant numbers in Thailand
Cats for You in Pattaya
Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Contact Paul and Sandra on 0852875004 or look at their useful website http://cats4youinpattaya.webs.com/
In 1850, more than 100,000 domesticated elephants lived in Thailand. Today, according to the Thai Elephant Conservation Center, there are about 2,700 domesticated elephants and an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 in the wild. About 95 percent of Thai elephants are in private ownership; the Conservation Center’s 80 elephants are Thailand’s only government-owned elephants apart from a few in zoos and the King’s ten revered white elephants in the Royal Elephant Stable.
Mickey
This little fellow was rescued near Jomtien. Initially we thought that he had a broken leg but thankfully it was just a strain. When he arrived he was covered from head to toe in fleas so the first job was to give him a bath. He is fattening up nicely now.
Happy April Fool's Day
Molly
Molly has been with us for about 2 years now. She is a bit shy and tends to hide away when we have visitors. However, once she gets to know you she will give you lots of love and cuddles. She’s one of our favorite girls.
Tweety & Maloney
This pair of lovely boys are the life and soul of the party. If there is any mischief to get up to then these two will be in the middle of it! It would be great to find a home where they can be together.
Charlie
Here we have an old favorite Charlie or Charles. This lovely, bouncy cat needs a very special home because, sadly, he is deaf and has only a small amount of vision in one eye. So he needs a very secure place to stay as he is most keen to get out and about. He must be the only cat in the house as he doesn’t like competition on four legs.
Going to the Dogs...
Don’t accept your dog’s admiration as conclusive evidence that you are wonderful.
--Ann Landers
Cats are extremely sensitive to vibrations. Cats are said to detect earthquake tremors 10 or 15 minutes before humans can.
Cat Corner Tip by Dr. RJ Peters to Pattaya’s cat lovers
If your cat is terrified of going to the veterinarian, it’s most likely he or she is simply afraid of getting into a pet carrier and riding in a vehicle. Condition your cat to enjoy the pet carrier by leaving it out and open often, or even all the time. Take your cat for rides in the car now and then without going anywhere, so the cat can get used to the idea that riding in your car does not always mean going to the vet.
