British passport chaos resolved

Y

et another new system for Brits wanting to renew their passports in Thailand had a dismal start after a compulsory email contact address was invalid for several days. At the end of March, the British embassy website announced that postal applications to Liverpool passport office (the system introduced as recently as last January) had been scrapped. British subjects now have to follow a new bureaucracy, the third change this year. Previously applicants applied through the Hong Kong consulate general. The website now states that all applicants must turn

up at newly opened offices at Trendy Office Building, 28th Floor, Sukhumvit Soi 13, Klongtoey-Nua, Wattana, Bangkok, to hand in their documents. But, in order to do this, applicants have to write an email to BangkokHMPO@ vfshelpline.com giving a choice of three dates they could visit for their interview. However, early applicants needing a replacement passport found that their email bounced back with a postmaster message in Thai stating that the electronic address was out of order. Dozens of would-be passport applicants in Bangkok,

Pattaya, and Phuket angrily complained to embassy personnel or anyone else willing to listen. Mark Kent, the British ambassador, said in a statement last week that the technological glitch had originated at the Foreign Office and the passport authorities in UK but had now been resolved. The new system requires all applicants in Thailand–whether renewing their passport, ordering one for the first time, or reporting a lost or stolen one-- to report with their documents in person at the Trendy Office Building. They must appear a Continued on page 6

News Robbery victim praises police Russian national Tatiana Ostapchuk, 33, said she was well satisfied with the police response after an armed man entered her unlocked house at 2 a.m. and demanded all her valuables. The intruder escaped with the woman’s iPad, Cannon camera, and iPhone, in all valued at about

100,000 baht. Later that day, police arrested 23-year-old Chaimongkol Damlongtan, having traced his location using the GPS signal of the stolen phone. The gun also was recovered; it turned out to be a toy. All the lost goods were returned to the robbery victim.

Electrician breaks Car dealership leg in fall set ablaze

Police and Sawangboriboon volunteers rushed to Big C Extra on Central Road in response to reports that a man had fallen off the building. Sanit Pungsaengchan, 35, was found with leg injuries on the outside ledge of the first floor. His sister

said Sanit is an electrician who was accustomed to working on high buildings. She believed that on this occasion he had taken a nap from his duties and toppled down at least two floors. He was later said to be comfortable in the hospital.

Police are investigating a blaze at the Mitsubishi garage on Sukhumvit Road which damaged two cars before firemen brought the fire under control. It is thought that the

fire, which occurred after the car dealership was closed for the day, may have begun in a garbage dump. Investigators said they were not sure yet of the exact circumstances.

Bag snatchers arrested Two men were arrested by police after a member of the public reported the license plate number of their getaway motorbikes. Saran Pinyoying and Danai Konkam, both 22, were found with various stolen items, including an iPhone and cash. They admitted to stealing a foreigner’s valuables in North Pattaya some days previously and to similar offenses.

Cambodian cook took his own life

A young Cambodian was found dead near Pacific Park in North Pattaya. The unnamed man, the apparent victim of a suicide, had worked as a cook at a local seafood restaurant. The dead man’s sister said she had

no idea why her brother had killed himself, as he had never complained to her. A loincloth was found tied tightly about the man’s neck, but it is possible he had taken pills. An autopsy will determine the cause of death.

Naked farang corpse found in empty building

A Eu r o p e a n - l o o k i n g foreigner, probably in his fifties, was found in a deserted building near Soi 11, Jomtien, by local youths who were exploring. Police estimate he had been dead for about four hours but, curiously, was not wearing any clothes.

There were wounds on the body, which led the police to assume there had been foul play. The man has not been identified because there were no documents or papers at the scene. Embassies have been asked to check their files for missing persons.

Focus on elderly care

At a Public Health Department seminar on aging, Dr. Pornthep Siriwanarangsan, director general, pointed to a rapid rise in the number of Thai people older than 60, a segment of the population that is rising even as the birth rate is dropping. Research suggests that more than 90 percent of the elderly have health problems of some sort, including diabetes, depression, osteoarthritis, and obesity.

Some suffer from all four. Those attending the seminar agreed that organizations focused on social care should work together to exchange technology and policies to improve the lot of the aged. It was also noted that more and more older people are living alone or in public sector homes as many families find it difficult to provide adequate care for and attention to their relatives.

second time to collect their passport once it arrives from the UK where it is produced. The VFS visa-processing office for Thais applying for a British visa has also moved here from Regent House. The revised rules for British passports are specifically for Thailand. For example, applicants for a British passport in Cambodia still must deal with the Liverpool passport office, and those in the Philippines and Malaysia must apply online. It is thought that the complex

and burdensome bureaucracy for Brits in Thailand is needed because of the large number of fake documents thought to be in circulation. “We feel the need to check out every passport application with the person and the paperwork in front of us,” said an embassy official who could not be identified because she was not an official spokesperson. If you need a British passport it is most necessary to check out the detailed procedure and the backup documents required by referring to British Embassy Bangkok on your search engine.

Sportsman Pub – a Pattaya institution Situated in Soi 13, between Beach Road and Second Road, the Sportsman Pub and Restaurant has become an institution in Pattaya. Opened in 1997, the emphasis is on traditional and home-cooked English pub fare with all the trimmings. A recipient of Trip Advisor’s Certificate of Excellence, the Sportsman prides itself on a welcoming and all-embracing atmosphere which includes all live sporting events on seven big screens, weekly golf tournaments, a Thursday quiz with rollover bonuses, and regular Five Star visa trips to the Cambodian border. Not to mention the friendliness of the staff, which has become a byword for true hospitality.

The Sportsman is run by Dave Bowers, whose connections with Thailand go back 25 years. A true British entrepreneur and golfing enthusiast, Dave started off selling Balinese batik at a flea market in the south of Thailand before opening beer bars on Walking Street and then opening his current business. “Our aim is simply to create the style of an English pub in Thailand’s most popular seaside resort,” says Dave. “The rest is really history.” Food, of course, is the key to success in Pattaya, and the Sportsman is a team leader in this regard. Every Sunday, for example, there is an all-you-can-eat carvery which is

commonly applauded as the best in town. It’s designed to satisfy the palates of the discerning diner as well as the taste of the demanding trencherman with five succulent roast joints, special steak and kidney pie, Yorkshire pudding, and all the trimmings. The all-day British breakfast can’t be beat, even by the greasy spoon cafes back in the UK, whilst the Thai menu covers the spectrum of local food with a choice of spicy specialties. Another British favorite–fish and chips–is recreated here with that real, golden crispy

Captain’s Cove European & Thai Restaurant A relatively new eatery has opened on Thepprasit Road near Soi 11. It’s called Captain’s Cove. Mick and I called by the other evening and were introduced to Ola, “the captain” who is the owner’s husband and inspiration for the restaurant’s name. He is a Norwegian seafaring man who spends his life skippering ships across the stormy seas while his charming wife, Ouie, controls her international and Thai kitchen with the same enthusiasm and commitment. This family-style restaurant is filled with comfortable touches: a big widescreen for showing the latest sports events, a bean-bag zone for laid back enjoyment of the matches, a kids’ playroom for the young ones, and a friendly horseshoe-shaped bar for more adult pursuits. Center

stage, however, is the restaurant where Ouie’s modern cuisine crosses continents in its gastronomic quest for the most interesting mélange of dishes. From 4 until 8 p.m. there’s a 2-for-1 promotion on their Chardonnay and Merlot house wine, which normally is B.150 per glass. Specially-selected labels also are available with a full complement of proprietary brands of spirits, beers and liqueurs. Complimentary tacos and salsa are provided to nibble while you make you choose from the menu. So with our happy-hour wine in hand we studied the extensive menu. Linda’s Restaurant Stylish, friendly and laid-back

Linda’s Restaurant has been a culinary landmark in Jomtien for some time now and we were amazed when we realized, that we had never visited this popular neighborhood eatery before. This was rectified recently. Linda suggested we dined one Friday night as a Salsa Evening had been arranged and they always proved to be lively happenings. Linda Eiksund is an interesting lady. Born in Hong Kong, she then spent 30 years in Norway where she trained as a chef and restaurateur before moving to Thailand, founding the successful partnership of the Norwegian Properties Group and creating the eponymous Linda’s Restaurant. The large terrace sparkles with convivial atmosphere and the cool interior offers a wealth of well-dressed tables, either on entrance level adjacent to the stage and dance floor or on the elevated zone with large picture windows and a cocktail bar. Having ordered our wine–an excellent Cotes du Rhone (B.1,650), we sat back and read through the extensive menu. Linda’s is open for breakfast with an abundance of choices from their Small Breakfast of strawberry yoghurt, fresh fruits, toast and jam for only B.89 to

the Luxury Norwegian of smoked salmon, egg and caviar, Italian salad, waffles with strawberry jam and Norwegian brown cheese at B.195. The cost-cutting lunch menu offers a variety of plates for only B.160 such as grilled chicken leg, garden salad and French fries, Swedish hash, or Norwegian beef soup and thin crisp bread, to name a few. Also, budgetbusting dinners can be had for only B.195 highlighting the likes of beef stroganoff, 300 grams of pork spare ribs, or chicken satay, plus there are daily specials (with much reduced prices), omelettes, hamburgers, baguettes and, of course, the famous Norwegian open sandwiches. The majority of the menu is firmly set in the magnificent mountains and fjords of Norway with every conceivable Norwegian specialty and festive dish. Fish farming is the foundation of Norway’s coastal economy, so little surprise to find Linda’s menu bursting with the best fish and seafood. Global cuisine is not overlooked and, as you will learn from further reading, Australian rack of lamb and New Zealand T-bone steaks rub shoulders with schnitzel cordon bleu and Italian lasagna. Mick and I, however, had already

decided to delve into the delights of fiskesuppe (fish soup), bacalhau Noruega (salted dry cod), and Fiskekaker med stekt lok (fishcakes with fried onions and potato). The fish soup was a velvety concoction of cream, salmon, potato, and carrots, which I loved. Portions here are enormous, so come hungry. Aquavit-marinated salmon with mustard sauce was a wonderful dish accompanied by a cucumber-made pot full of mayonnaise, salad, and lemon; the taste was smooth and succulent. Next to arrive was the Norwegian bacalao. A more than substantial piece of cod was served with olives, New Zealand mussels and accompanied by a rich tomato sauce. The snowy white cod fell in shards under my knife with the salty flavorings striking a vibrant note against the comfort of the tomato sauce. The fish cakes were definitely a different kettle of fish from the fish cakes that we cook at home. Made with fish, milk, eggs, and potato flour, the textural interplay produced a slightly looser version, but the flavors zinged through and, accompanied by the abundance of fried onions and potatoes, it was a heartening dish. Other main courses of note are pan-fried snow fish (B.795), poached king lobster, mixed seafood grill (B.595), pepper steak, surf and turf, and Australian rib eye. The menu spans 14 pages so the options at Linda’s are wide-ranging. The 3-course set dinner is B.595 and on the night we visited offered Norwegian smoked salmon to start followed by beef steak, finishing with a homemade tiramisu. There are well over 30 Thai dishes and the Sweet

Temptations desserts are more than tempting, including pancakes with butter cream, banana split, hot apple cake Norwegian style to cheese cake, lemon sorbet, fresh fruit, and an array of ice creams. It was 9 p.m. by now and the setup was starting for the Latin rhythms of the evening to begin. Participants started to arrive, the ladies in salsa and mambo-inspired dresses, headed by the well known dancer, Catalino J. Gotengco Jr. and his dancers. The evocative music struck up, the dancing commenced and suddenly we had a salsa fiesta at Linda’s Restaurant. These spirited Latin American dance parties are held twice a month, so do check Linda’s website for details. Linda’s Restaurant Thappraya Road, Jomtien, opposite the Jomtien Complex Open daily from 7 a.m. till late Tel: 038 252 726 or 087 813 0115 www.lindasrestaurant.com

The Okura Prestige Bangkok

Five-star luxury and supreme comfort in the heart of Bangkok

by Mick and Di Barker

Main Lobby

The Okura Prestige Bangkok harmonizes the Japanese principle of “Wa” with Okura’s philosophy of “Best ACS” (Best Accommodation, Best Cuisine, Best Service) to create a hotel that provides unrivalled hospitality, comfort and luxury in a city already well known and appreciated for its outstanding levels of customer service. Directly quoted from the hotel company’s overview this admirable mission statement is now a reality as Mick and I can verify after our overnight stay at this stunning hotel. For most Japanese, wa is a feeling close to perfection; a group situation in which everything goes smoothly, without contestation or ill will, everyone knows their place and acts accordingly. Up & Above Restaurant and Bar

Best Cuisine: The haute cuisine Yamazato is situated in its “haute” location on the 24th level of the hotel. Already honored by the Thailand Tatler’s Best Restaurant award for 2013 this stunning restaurant offers the finest cuisine using traditional Kaiseki ryori methods. The 6-course signature Kaiseki set offers a royal Japanese experience while the a la carte options offer top-grade sashimi and a teppan chef who personally prepares your choices at the teppanyaki table. The sake list is comprehensive with carefully selected labels from the best houses in Japan as well as a selection of Japanese draught beers and the finest wines from around the world with a sommelier on hand to suggest the best possible pairing for each dish. Elements Restaurant is inspired by the famous Michelin two-star Ciel Bleu at the Hotel Okura in Amsterdam and represents a new generation of lifestyle dining with a firm food ethos. Henry Jordan, chef de cuisine, and his stalwart team exhibit their skills in

The first Okura hotel opened in Tokyo in 1962. Since then the newly created Okura Hotels & Resorts have created 23 properties in Asia, Europe and the Americas. The opening of the Okura Prestige Bangkok marks a new phase and the Prestige collection of hotels and resorts is set to expand with more than 20 new properties scheduled to open over the next five years, beginning with the Okura Prestige Taipei. their open kitchen enabling their guests to enter into the culinary theatre that unfolds as the evening progresses. Up & Above Restaurant and Bar defines the art of all-day dining. Natural materials and subtle hues create a leisurely spare in which to enjoy a restful breakfast which Mick and I did recently. The fresh fruit and juice bar was a sight to behold the scale of the selection and quality of the produce phenomenal. Orders for a wide selection of egg dishes are taken at table and delivered later, the cold cut corner and Japanese selection were inspiring and the pastries, crepes and waffles sheer perfection. An international buffet lunch with live cooking stations is held later in the day and on Sundays the hotel has created another culinary innovation raising the bar on the phenomenon of Sunday brunch. A la carte dining is also available featuring popular western dishes and specialties from various regions of Thailand.

Deluxe Room

Best Accommodation: The rooms, of which there are 240, all offer inspiring panoramic views across the dynamic Bangkok skyline through triple-glazed e-coated windows that insulate against both heat and noise creating an ambiance of serene synergy. We were more than impressed with the standard of latest technological developments that each room tenders. From the finest Egyptian cotton sheets to the supertechno bathroom amenities to the digital bedside control panels and flat screen internet TVs every possible element has Deluxe Suite Living Room been honed and perfected. Club levels are positioned on the highest floors and offer an exclusive level of privacy with bespoke services and the highest level of service in the Okura Club lounge. Club Lounge

Best Service: The Okura Prestige Bangkok indisputably puts the “Wa” factor into Bangkok hospitality. The harmony experienced between staff and guest is inspirational and their desire to please to be professionally applauded. The delicate beauty and subtleties of Japanese culture resonate throughout the hotel and fuse seamlessly with Western functionality and expectation. Meadow Bliss

1. Essential Oils There are a few essential oils which have been shown to have properties that can help against cellulite. Some of the oils in this group include lemon, lavender, geranium, cypress, grapefruit, rosemary, and juniper. You can use each of the oils by themselves or combine them into a potent massage treatment oil. Massage is relaxing and it is also a great treatment for smoothing out your skin tone to reduce the visibility of cellulite.

A 30-minute session of fast walking 4 or 5 times a week is all that is needed. 4. Eat a Good Diet Get rid of alcohol, sodas, sweets, pastries, and – hard as it may be – you need to forgo the gravy as well.

2. Dry Skin Brushing

For this method, a natural bristle dry skin brush will be needed. They aren’t expensive and are readily available. Brush your skin with small circular motions over your butt and thighs, being sure to include any other areas where you have visible cellulite. The brushing motion breaks down the fatty deposits responsible for the orange peel appearance. Once you’ve finished brushing, you might also like to apply a sunless tanning lotion. The darker tones will make the cellulite dimples standout less. 3. Regular Exercise

Start up a regular exercise regime. Cellulite is identical to the fat stores everywhere else on your body, so reducing your surplus fat is only going to do good things for reducing the cellulite appearance. You are also increasing muscle tone so the shape of your skin will be formed by the muscle rather than the lumpy fatty deposits.

Cellulite is fat, and seeing as fat is mostly directly linked to our diet, you are only perpetrating the bumpy skin look. Increase your intake of fibers with more fresh vegetables, fruit (especially the sour variety), and fish. You know what you’ve been doing wrong so there’s no need to go into it here. Don’t skip your breakfast – make sure it’s a healthy one, and don’t be tempted into scoffing down late night dinners. 5. Stay Hydrated Cellulite is formed from hardened lumps of fat just below the surface of the skin. As our skin ages and becomes thinner the cellulite becomes more visible.

Keeping yourself well hydrated will ensure that toxins are flushed out of your body – which helps to stop the connective tissues from hardening and forming cellulite. For additional information on skin care, beauty, health, fitness, romance, hair care and more, go to www.urbanewomen.com

<<< Got Dry Skin? Try This… If you are suffering with dry skin, here are several tips that may alleviate the condition and also may help make your skin supple and smooth: • Use a humidifier to help keep your skin hydrated if indoor air is dry. • Wear cotton and other natural fibers. • Drink two to three liters of water, juice, and other liquids every day. • Eat omega-3 foods. Essential fatty acids can help fortify the skin’s natural oil-retaining barriers. Foods rich in omega-3 include salmon, halibut, sardines, flax, walnuts, and safflower oil. • For redness or inflammation, apply a cool compress or an over-thecounter hydrocortisone cream on the area for a week. If these don’t provide relief, consult a dermatologist. • Limit showers or baths to one a day and use only warm (not hot) water. • Use gentle, liquid shower creams; avoid anti-bacterial soap. • Apply moisturizer daily and use sunscreen before stepping out during the day.

Jawline Contouring Without Surgery A prominent jaw looks handsome on men, but women born with a strong jaw line often want to correct it. For this reason, jaw line contouring has become a popular cosmetic by Dr. Natnicha Loichuen procedure–one that typically is performed on women. It has the ability to achieve a less prominent jawline, create a harmonious balance with other facial features and soften the facial appearance. While Botox is a remarkable way to get rid of wrinkles, smoothing out creases in the skin isn’t the only thing that it can do to improve an individual’s appearance.

Botox also can reduce the size and modify the contour of a jaw line as it can shrink the size of the masseter muscle. What is the masseter? The masseter is a muscle located in the jaw. It is responsible for jaw movement, it allows the teeth to clench or chew. People who have a large masseter (hypertrophy) often have a square jaw line. When you clench your teeth, the masseter muscle protrudes. How the procedure works The procedure involves injecting Botox directly into the protruding muscle, focusing on the lower portion and avoiding the parotid glands, which produce saliva. It works by blocking nerve impulse to the masseter. This allows the masseter to relax so that it can gradually reduce in size. By reducing the muscle at the point of attachment to the bone, the bone can also reduce over time giving longer-lasting results without compromise to the strength of the bone. When will I see the result and how long will it last? Because Botox produces slow atrophy of particular muscles, results are not immediate. Unlike regular Botox of the upper face–where results are seen in a week to 10 days and last three to four months, improvement following masseter treatment may not be apparent for a month or more. On the other hand, the benefits typically last for six to 18 months.

Botox is temporary. Over time, muscles slowly will regain movement. After being injected with two treatments, most patients do not need additional treatments with Botox. Those who seek further contouring typically come for repeat injections every 6 to 9 months, depending upon your doctor’s advice. The results should be dramatic after a year of treatments. Who is a good candidate for this procedure? The most important criterion to decide if you are a good candidate is the thickness of your masseter muscle. The relative thickness of the masseter can be easily determined by biting down hard and feeling the outer jaw line. If the muscle appears to be almost rock-hard and enlarged in appearance when you clench your teeth, you may be a good candidate to have this procedure done.

In order to determine whether this solution is suitable for you, a consultation must be arranged with the doctor to discuss your expectations and assess your facial structure. If the masseter is not pinpointed as the reason for your square jaw, jaw line sculpting with Botox may not be deemed suitable and an alternative may be suggested.

The Ten Most Common Senior Diseases by Pensiri Panyarachun, Absolute Living Thailand

There is no doubt that we are living longer than previous generations. Staying healthy is important at any age, but particularly for older people. Degradation of the human body starts as early as age 30, and that is a major contributor to many ailments suffered by aging adults, most of whom are contending with two or more of the following: 1. Brain Age is a major risk factor for most common brain diseases, including mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and cerebrovascular disease which often strike older adults and are characterized by progressive deterioration of nerve cells, eventually leading to cell death. 2. Diabetes Diabetes, when blood glucose levels (blood sugar) are too high, can lead to dangerous health problems, such a heart attack or stroke. Older people with diabetes and high LDL cholesterol should monitor their diets, exercise, and take cholesterol-lowering medication. They also should have regular examinations of their eyes, feet and kidneys. 3. High blood pressure (hypertension) You can have high blood pressure, or hypertension, and still feel just fine. That’s because high blood pressure is asymptomatic. The silent killer is common in older people and a major health problem. If not controlled with lifestyle changes and medication, it can lead to stroke, heart disease, eye problems, kidney failure, and other ailments. High blood pressure is sometimes reflected in shortness of breath during light physical activity or exercise. 4. Incontinence Incontinence is the involuntary loss of bladder and/ or bowel control, resulting in the loss of urine and/or fecal matter. Incontinence is not a disease in and of itself. Rather, it is a symptom of some other disorder. For the elderly, it is always important to see a doctor about any problems with incontinence. 5. Vision It's a fact of life that vision changes occur as you get older. Many eye diseases have no early symptoms, but an exam can detect eye diseases in their early stages before vision loss occurs. They may develop painlessly and you may not be aware of changes to your vision until the condition is quite advanced. An annual eye exam can help diagnose devastating eye diseases, like glaucoma and macular degeneration, early, increasing the chance of maintaining healthy vision later in life.

6. Kidney In a healthy aging person, kidney function remains normal. Illness, medications, and other conditions, though, can affect the ability of the kidneys to function properly. The kidneys can be affected or damaged by various diseases. Age increases the risk of problems, including inflammation or swelling of the kidneys, diabetes, urinary tract infection and incontinence, as well as cardiovascular disease. 7. Heart Coronary heart disease remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in older adults, despite improved survival and declining mortality. Muscles in aging hearts may relax less completely between beats; as a result, the pumping chambers become stiffer and may work less efficiently. In old age, the heart also may not pump as effectively as it once did. Heart problems in old age may affect quality of life, length of life, or both. 8. Prostate Prostate enlargement is a common condition associated with aging. About a third of all men over 50 will have symptoms of prostate enlargement. Many experience urinary changes as they age, which may be caused by inflammation or enlargement of the prostate gland. Troublesome urinary symptoms are sometimes, but not always, symptoms of prostate cancer. When urinary changes cause problems, they can be treated successfully by lifestyle changes, medication, surgery or a combination of the three. 9. Anemia Anemia often points to a serious and possibly treatable medical condition. It can be a temporary condition, a consequence of other ailments, or it can be a chronic problem. Elderly people with anemia are 40 percent more likely to have problems that keep them from being independent. These problems include poor balance and not being able to walk long distances, making them prone to falls, heart trouble, depression, and loss of memory and concentration. 10. Obesity Obesity is an unhealthy excess of body fat, which increases the risk of illness and premature death. Obesity can exacerbate age-related decline in physical function and lead to frailty.

HTC One M8 As their followup to the incredibly popular One, HTC has announced the One M8, an indisputably-gorgeous Android-powered all-metal unibody phone. At its core, the One M8 features Android 4.4 KitKat, a 2.3GHz quad core processor, 2GB of RAM, up to 32GB of storage expandable through a microSD slot, and all the connectivity options you'd expect. What's really important are the updates to the camera, battery, and gesture control. An updated camera gets pixels that are double the size you would find on most phones, letting you shoot in low-light conditions, while making it possible to use a number of new special effects. Its improved battery will last up to 40 percent longer, while a new standby mode will keep your phone running for 14 days. And gesture-control shortcuts let you turn on your screen, answer calls, and lock the phone without swipes or taps.

LG G Watch What will certainly be the first of many watches powered by the recently announced Android Wear, Google's operating system tailored specifically to wearable devices, the LG G Watch is still very much in its early stages. The project represents a close collaboration between the folks at LG and Google, bringing together leading producers of both hardware and software for what will likely be an impressive device. Specific details, including hardware specifications, have yet to be released, but it's definitely the start of something big for the Wear platform.

Bangkok International Motor Show - 35th edition Cars, pickup trucks, super bikes, gadgets and pretties galore. The hottest automotive event in the Kingdom. The annual Bangkok by John K. Lindgren International Editor-in-chief: Motor Show, aka carsanook.com BIMS, rolled out at Thailand's mega expo venue: Challenger Hall 1-3, Impact Muang Thong Thani. The strap line for the 2014 show--Beauty in the DRIVE (Beauty in the drive?) The 12-day event boasted 28 car makers, nine motorbikes, seven audio and 87 accessory brands from Japan, Korea, Malaysia, India, Europe, the United States and Thailand. The kickin'-the-tires-and-slammin'the doors (and ogling pretties) extravaganza 2014 started on March 26 and ended on April 7. These days, the entrance fee is 100 baht. Year 1979 was debut of Bangkok Motor Show, an open air event at the hot and humid Lumpini Park. The entry fee 3 baht! The nearby Thai-Belgian bridge wasn't even built nor the MRT station. But the ‘79 Motor Show still attracted 380,000 visitors; last year's BIMS at Muang Thong Thani 1.7 million people and 40,000 orders were placed. Motor Show organizer Dr. Prachin Eamlumnow, chairman of Grand Prix Group, said the large number of new models launched before and at the show will significantly help spur car sales in Thailand. Some highlights this year: The American Ford Company showed off their new downsized, EcoSport subcompact SUV propelled by a 1.5 liter

5-speed automatic power shift loaded with new features. Price: 669,000 to 829,000 baht. The Japanese presented the allnew 2-liter sport compact Mazda3 in sedan and 5-door hatch-back versions equipped with Mazda's new SkyActiv technology providing improved fuel economy, outstanding performance and low emissions. Price range: 833,000 to 1,094,000 baht. Nissan, nee Datsun, rolled out the all new Livina--a compact MPV with a 1.6 liter, 114-horsepower petrol engine. Price: 672,000 baht. The prestigious Lexus marque showed off its new ES 300h hybridpowered luxury sedan combining fuel efficiency and eco-friendliness, i.e. Hybrid Synergy Drive. Power comes from 2.5- liter petrol and electric motor. Four driving modes: Normal,

Sport, Eco and EV. Yours for a cool 3.5 million baht. The German powerhouses--BMW, Mini, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Volkswagen--impressed visitors with their premium segment imported (CBU) and locally assembled (CKD) luxury automobiles. Bayerische Motoren Werke, BMW highlighted the stunning i8 concept car. A futuristic, sleek plug-in hybrid combining electric and petrol power with a sprint capacity 0-100 in 4.4 seconds. The über-chic Mini presented the new third generation Mini Cooper S. A 2-liter turbocharged pocket-rocket, 192 horsepower, top speed 192 km/h. And the frugal Mini Cooper Diesel. A downsized 3-cylinder, 1.5 liter twinpower turbo. Fuel consumption: 26 km/L. Price starting from 2.2 million. The coveted Mercedes-Benz brought the all-new C-Class with a high-tech 4-cylinder turbo mated to a 7-speed G-Tronic transmission. Plus LED Intelligent Light System for safe night driving. MB claims that the fuel consumption, thanks to the aluminium body, has been cut by 20 percent. C 250 AMG: 3,19,000 baht and the C180 Exclusive. Price: 2,790,000 baht. Also at the elegant Mercedes stand, the new GLA-Class, based on the A-Class platform, the smallest SUV Mercedes has ever built with the smallest engine, a 1.6 liter petrol 7-speed power plant. Retail price: 2.4 million baht For the ultra high-net-worth individuals two legendary motorcars; the Rolls-Royce Phantom priced 42.5 million baht, and the iconic James Bond, 007 sports car, the Aston Martin

V12 Vantage S appeared at the Motor Show for the first time. The Italian Ducati motorbike stand drew a big crowd due to the sexiest pretties of the show. Ducati 1199 Superleggera (English Super light), the fastest road bike in the world. Also on the stand, the iconic Monster 1200 and Monster 1200S, the iconic Ducatis that started the naked bike phenomenon over 20 years ago. Ducati Thailand pampered their fans, the Ducatistis, with attractive sales campaigns complimentary canapés, espressos and cappuccinos at Desmo Cafe. Looking to buy a new sedan, MPV, a heavy duty pick-up truck, a big fat bike or you just want to pimp your ride with cool accessories? Head

for the Motor Show next year at end of March beginning of April. Or the Thailand International Motor Expo in November-December; both shows are at Impact Muang Thong Thani. 2013 BIMS became a member of Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles, (International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers) and Bangkok is firmly listed in the world's motor-show calendar. www.oica.net So if you can't visit Detroit, Frankfurt, Geneva, Paris (Salon International de l'Auto), and Tokyo motor shows, try Impact Muang Thong Thani - Challenger Hall 1-3. Retailers rank Thailand sixth in target markets Asia Pacific retailers are focused on expanding in the Asia Pacific region, a recent global report by CBRE Research has found. A survey entitled “How Active Are Retailers Globally?” found that Asia Pacific-based retailers see significant potential in Asia Pacific, and that all of their top 10 target destinations for expansion in 2014 are within the region. Thailand is ranked in the sixth position as a target for 29 percent of Asia Pacific-based retailers, while China is the most sought-after market (58 percent), followed by Vietnam (48 percent), Malaysia (42 percent), Indonesia (39 percent), and Singapore (35 percent). Top Ten Target Markets for Asian Retailers in 2014

Source | CBRE Research “The relatively lower levels of interest by Asia Pacific retailers in expanding in American and European markets reflect a cautious attitude to expanding out of their core markets,” said Sebastian Skiff, executive director of CBRE Retail, adding, “but that said, we are beginning to see a number of Asia-based brands working on strategies for

global markets. For example, Chinese brand Bosideng opening on Oxford Street in London and a number of other Chinese brands looking to launch New York and Australia.” Around 14-million-square meters (149-million-square feet) of new retail space is currently under construction in Asia Pacific. Half of the new supply is in China, mostly in Shenzhen and Guangzhou. The bulk of the remainder is in Southeast Asian markets including Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. “In Q4 2013, four new retail projects opened in Bangkok providing around 40,000 square meters of new space,” according to James Pitchon, executive director, head of CBRE Research and Consulting in Thailand. “The total retail supply in Bangkok at the end of 2013 stood at 6.32- million-square meters, consisting of shopping malls, which shared 61 percent of the total market and can be categorized into three main types; community mall, enclosed mall and on-site retail facilities.” Global retailers’ targets The report found that retailers globally are predominantly targeting countries with mature retail sectors, although a number of emerging markets in Asia Pacific also feature strongly. Retailers originating from Europe have shown a strong bias towards their own region with less than 15 percent of retailers targeting markets outside the region. Retailers from the Americas are biased towards the US, but are also targeting European markets, and in particular Germany. China leads the way for Asia Pacific, ranking as the fifth most popular destination for global retailers, with 22 percent of surveyed retailers targeting the market in 2014. The importance of China globally cannot be

by

underestimated, in part because of the impact having a presence there has on sales in other regions. Looking at Thailand, Jariya Thumtrongkitkul, senior manager of Retail Services at CBRE Thailand reported, “International brands which expanded their business lines in the Thai market in Q4 2013 include Sephora and Victoria's Secret Beauty & Accessories at Siam Center, Pull & Bear at Siam Center, Brioni’s first store at Gaysorn Plaza. Mid-range fashion brand openings included Carhartt, Pedro, and Kenneth Cole at CentralWorld Plaza,” In Vietnam, middle class consumers with rising incomes and a hunger for style continue to draw retailers’ interest. Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi were both ranked in the top 10 cities of most new retailer entrants in 2012 and 2013, according to CBRE’s Retail Hotspots in Asia Pacific report. The liberation of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on wholly-owned retail businesses from 2015 is expected to further stimulate this trend. Meanwhile, the economies of Malaysia and Singapore are strengthening and as a result consumer sentiment is expected to improve in both markets. In Malaysia an influx of new supply is due over the next few years. The resulting increase in available space, and expected lower rental levels in these new venues, should provide an added incentive for international retailers wanting to expand there. In Singapore, stability in the economy and the employment market has laid a sound foundation for domestic consumption. Retail spending has also been boosted by the growth in international tourists, especially affluent ones, following the opening of major new visitor attractions. Singapore has since become one of the gateway cities for brands new to Asia. Of some concern though for retailers in Singapore is the availability of qualified sales floor staff.

Legal & Expat Money FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS by: Magna Carta Law Office

Trademark Registration in Thailand What is a trademark? A trademark is a recognizable sign, design or expression which distinguishes products or services of a particular source from those of others. The trademark owner can be an individual, business organization, or any legal entity. What types of trademarks are recognized in Thailand? Trademarks, collective marks, certification marks, and service marks may be registered in Thailand. Service Mark is a special type of trademark used in connection with services instead of products. Businesses use service marks to identify their services and distinguish them from others’ services. Certification Mark is used by the owner in connection with goods or services of another person to certify the origin, composition, method of production, quality or other characteristics of such goods, or to certify the nature, quality, type, or other characteristics of such services.

Collective Mark is a trademark or service mark used by companies or enterprises of the same group, or by members of an association, cooperative, union, confederation, group of persons, or any other state or private organization. Is it compulsory to register a trademark? Thailand does not officially require trademarks to be registered. However, there are numerous benefits to be considered. What are the advantages of registering a trademark? A. Registering a trademark provides greater legal protection against counterfeiting and infringement as it protects a company's name or logo and grants the trademark owner exclusive nationwide ownership of the mark B. Registering a trademark deters others from using your trademark. The registered trademark will appear in trademark search reports ordered by others, likely discouraging others from proceeding with registration of the same or similar mark, and C. Registering a trademark provides the trademark owner with greater remedies as it increases the likelihood of the successful filing of a dispute resolution case from an infringer. How can a trademark be eligible for registration? For a trademark to be eligible for registration, it must be distinctive and should not be similar or

confusingly similar to a trademark registered by another. The trademark must not consist of any characteristics mentioned in Section 8 of the Thailand Trademark Act B.E. 2534 (with B.E. 2543 amendment). The applicant or his agent must have an office or address for communication by the Registrar in Thailand. What types of trademark cannot be registered under Thai Law? According to Section 8 of the Trademark Act B.E. 2534(with B.E. 2543 amendment), trademarks having or consisting of any of the following characteristics cannot be registered: • state arms or crests, royal seals, official seals, Chakkri emblems, emblems and insignia of the royal orders, and decorations; • national flags of Thailand, royal standard flags, or official flags; • royal names, royal monograms, abbreviations of royal names or royal monograms, or names, words, representations, terms or emblems signifying the King, Queen or Heir to the Throne or members of the royal family; • national or official emblems, names, monograms and flags of foreign states, international organizations, and head of a foreign state, unless permission is given by the competent officer of the foreign state or international organization; • official emblems and emblems of the Red Cross or appellations Red Cross or Geneva Cross; • a mark similar to a medal, diploma, certificate, or any other mark awarded at a trade exhibition or competition held by the Thai government or a Thai government agency for public enterprise, or any other government organ of Thailand, a foreign government, or international organization unless such medal, diploma, certificate, or mark has been actually awarded to the applicant for goods and is used in combination with the trademark; • any mark which is contrary to public order, morality, or public policy; • a mark, registered or not, which is identical to a well-known mark as prescribed by the Ministerial Notifications, or so similar thereto that the public might be confused as to the owner or origin of the goods; • geographical indications protected under the law on geographical indications; How long does trademark certification take? The entire process takes approximately one year from the date of filing. However, trademark protection begins on the day the application is submitted. How long is the trademark protection valid? Registration of the trademark entitles the owner to protection of his trademark for a period of ten (10) years from the application-filing date. However, this can be renewed within 90 days before the expiration of each 10-year term. When an application for renewal is filed within the prescribed period, the trademark shall be deemed registered until the Registrar orders otherwise. The renewal of trademark registration shall be in accordance with the rules and procedures prescribed in the Ministerial Regulations.

Equity Release…..

Unlocking cash from existing offshore assets and raising the bar on equity release schemes So what do you do if you want to buy overseas property perhaps to live in, perhaps to retire to, or to generate rent from to supplement your other income? You don’t want to empty your bank accounts of your savings or sell your portfolio holdings. And vendor- or developer-finance is not an option. Well, before you abandon the idea completely, it is perhaps worth looking at your asset column for alternative ways of freeing up capital that you can put to work elsewhere. Home equity loans Releasing equity (the difference between an outstanding mortgage if any and the current value) from your existing overseas property is a well-documented method of raising cash via a traditional re-mortgage facility. This is worth looking into if you have some equity as well as easy access to a friendly lender who is not allergic to expatriates! If however, you do not own a property with equity, then there are other ways to access capital. Asset-backed lending from offshore portfolio structures Many expatriates and / or retirees living overseas will already have an offshore investment structure or portfolio bond that has, over the years, with ad hoc top-ups and investment returns, risen to a valuation of US $500,000 or more. In many cases, that can be used as security to provide access to a cash loan secured by the portfolio itself. A lending ratio of 50 percent loan-to-value would, in this example, release $250,000 cash lent to the investor on a rolling-term basis. The underlying assets in the portfolio would have to be of a low risk nature at outset to qualify, and then be conservatively managed going forward, but even so could will still provide a return higher than the interest cost of the loan in the current environment . There are risks involved: if the portfolio valuation were to fall below a certain limit which could in theory lead to a margin call from the lender, so a word of caution here is to avoid holding cross-currency loans and risky stocks or funds inside the portfolio. That said, the days of lending against highly-aggressive portfolios are largely in the past now as we enter a new world of cautious lending strategies being adopted by banks. Many will now only look to be lending against low- to moderate-risk assets such as blue chip stocks, investment grade bonds, government gilts, and professionally-managed unit trusts. One of the main benefits of asset-backed lending of course is that the security that you put up for the loan remains invested even after the loan proceeds have been released to you–whether that be the portfolio or the first property. If your loan is costing 5 percent a year in interest, and your portfolio is conservatively managed yet still returns 7-8 percent pa, then this can be a very viable option. An experienced investment professional should be able to properly structure your portfolio, prior to submission of a loan application, to maximize the chances of success. With proper, on-going monitoring and a full understanding of the risks involved and how to mitigate them, this can be a very powerful tool for individuals seeking cash funding for new ventures or those who would like to buy a property in Thailand with cash.

What is actually happening in Russia? With widespread political media frenzy regarding Russia and the Ukraine, one could easily imagine signs of fear or concerns for what may happen. However, this is actually not the case! The normal people of Russia understand the intricacies of the historical situation, and most believe, if left alone, the situation would have been solved. So what does this all mean to

daily business? Not a lot, according to Kim Waddoup, CEO of the aiGroup in Russia, organizers of the successful Overseas Property Shows in Moscow and St. Petersburg. ‘In preparing for our Moscow Overseas Property & Investment Show last month, we were concerned for our exhibitors. Not for their safety, but would there be enough visitors for them over the two days of the show?’ said Waddoup. ‘We have seen general decreases both in our own portal (www.1property.ru) and in the Russian search engines for the number of searches for property abroad for certain destinations but, on the other hand, we have also seen increases (Dubai, Montenegro). Incidentally, searches for Property in Crimea have increased dramatically,’ Waddoup added. ‘Our 160 exhibitors from 27 destinations were eagerly awaiting the opening of the show,’ he continued. ‘Would the visitors come? A small crowd entered as we opened the door and then they just kept coming and coming. In fact,

we welcomed 5,907 visitors over the two days; just a very small decrease of 7 percent on our last show in October. ‘Exhibitors from all over the world who participated were also relieved, and while the situation is in every one’s mind (thanks to the press), it was business as usual. ‘Many regular participants also noted that most of the visitors were more genuine--now actively planning to buy property abroad rather than just looking. All reported an increase in the number of firm enquiries and many were amazed at the number of inspection visits being planned in the next months. ‘In fact, business was better than normal, as many are looking to move some assets out of Russia soon. ‘It is true that the Rouble has lost value on the money markets, but this does not seem to be affecting many people, especially as a great number have savings in hard currencies. Yes, Russian people are concerned with what is going on but they are not over-reacting to the media hype, and life continues as normal.’

Thais do mean business! (Part I) As I mentioned in a recent article, less than 2 percent was the biggest dip Thailand experienced in its 15-year run of recordbreaking tourist arrivals; that minuscule drop occurred in the midst of the global recession and financial crisis of 2007–2008. Incredibly, the Indonesian earthquake which triggered the horrendous tsunami at the end of 2004 resulted in a mere 1 percent drop in Thailand tourist arrivals. Concerning Thailand’s political unrest between 2009 and 2010, tourism actually increased from 14.15 million arrivals to 15.9 million--an increase of one million visitors! Looking back at that period of time, I remember in June of 2010, I attended a Bangkok breakfast lecture presented by Ensign Media, publishers of Property Report Asia Magazine. The guest speakers at that particular Property Report LIVE event were Raimon Land’s deputy vice president for research and development, Simon Dervillé, and James Pitchon, executive director at CBRE Thailand. It was a very well attended group of some of Bangkok’s top real estate professionals and all were gathered looking to network over breakfast and to capture some insights into the Thailand real estate industry’s future. CBRE’s James Pitchon talked about the stability in the Thai real estate market and was a month or so earlier quoted in the Bangkok Post saying, “Thailand is facing a very limited impact from the sub-prime mess in the United States, mainly because Thai banks are still haunted by the ghosts of 1997 and have been very conservative in their lending to the real estate sector.” Stability is one thing….and being

conservative is another, but what really surprised most attendees was when Raimon Land’s Dervillé took the microphone and announced that a total of 1,087 condominium units were transferred in the fourth quarter of 2009 at an average price of 98,551 baht per square meter! Even more surprising, he went on to say that during that same period, Thai buyers represented more than 90 percent of Ramon Land’s sales, while foreigners made up only 8.8 percent, showing that the political upheaval had upset the international investment market more than the Thai buyers’ market. Even our own Eastern Seaboard Nova Group headed by Rony Fineman launched their well-marketed ‘The Cliff’ in the Cozy Beach area during the same fourth quarter of 2009, selling 41 percent of their 400+ condo units; 61 percent went to Thai buyers--unequaled on the Eastern Seaboard throughout the entire 2003 to 2007 condo boom. Yes, the fourth quarter of 2009 saw the Thai economy post 5.8 percent GDP growth, primarily due to Asian markets’ exports bouncing back, which consequently lead developers to releasing more projects and local Thai buyers queuing up to buy as their confidence roared back into the industry with condominium presales totaling 15.1 billion baht in the fourth quarter of 2009, an increase of 380 percent over the same quarter in 2008. Yes, I can hear you now…..“But what about the first quarter of 2010 with the red shirts and the complete chaos that ensued and snared Thailand into the international limelight as a ‘failed democracy’ falling into political disrepute?”

Red Shirts 2010

Government Opposition 2014 Believe it or not, the first quarter of 2010 was very active in inner-city Bangkok, with one of the key findings of Raimon Land’s research being that the demand from Thai buyers had been remarkably strong with many developers turning their attention to this target group. In fact, during the first quarter of 2010, three land sites topped the one-million baht per square wah price level….that’s 1,000,000 baht per four-square meters folks! The market price of land at that time in those three locations--Siam Paragon and the areas in front of the Chidlom and Phloen Chit BTS stations--was estimated at 1-million-baht per square wah or 400-million baht a rai, according to the latest survey by the independent property consulting firm Agency for Real Estate Affairs (AREA) headed by Dr. Sopon Pornchokchai. Even into the second and third quarters of 2010, Raimon Land was finding that Thai buyers continued to represent two-thirds of their sales, gaining significant ground over the foreign demand that was prominent during the preceding two years. It is simply astounding to me that the Thai economy recorded its best growth performance in 15 years, with the 12 percent growth in the first quarter of 2010, despite all of the political unrest being perpetrated by the red shirts’ takeover of downtown Bangkok. Yes, the gross domestic product in the first quarter of 2010 increased 12 percent (equivalent of one-year growth), which represents the strongest growth since the second quarter of 1995.

He himself has been in the real estate industry going on 28 years, having started his career in the United States where he was licensed and practiced both real estate sales and property management in Seattle, Washington. Clayton personally was responsible for

bringing in the first 53 General Motors executives for the start-up phase of Thailand’s General Motors manufacturing facility and had a three-year exclusive with the company. Following that experience, he placed most of the start-up executives for the Eastern Seaboard’s BMW manufacturing facility. The American-born entrepreneur is known

You talk about ‘Amazing Thailand’ and I have personally seen this entire scenario before here in Thailand. Those of us that were here in 1991 remember that Army chief Suchinda Kraprayoon overthrew the government of Chatichai Choonhavan, eventually making Suchinda Kraprayoon prime minister for the very short period from April 7, 1992 until May 24, 1992. During that time, Thailand experienced a coup d’état, a military junta-style government takeover and yes, Thailand was the world’s fastest growing economy at 9.2 percent from 1987 to 1996! Is Thailand capable of doing it again? Is Thailand capable of being the world’s fastest growing economy again? Despite the political impasse that we have been experiencing for more than six months now (since November 2013) between the Yingluck Shiniwatra government and the growing opposition movement, Thailand once again broke its tourism record with more than 26 million arriving tourists in 2013. As well, Thailand is once again showing strong signs of growing foreign investment with huge commercial and residential development projects in the making, which we will take a closer look at in my next article. I have been here more than 23 years now and I say anything is possible with this amazing country…..and my experience has been like the title on the famous Expat's Guide to Doing Business in Thailand by Robert Cooper…..Thai’s Mean Business! throughout the Asia-Pacific region for his writing, public speaking and television presentations. His many accomplishments in promoting real estate on Thailand’s Eastern Seaboard include having been a guest speaker with several of Thailand’s top political and business figures on CNBC’s Managing Asia. Siam@Siam Pattaya

Benjaphon Angsaengtham General Manager Siam@Siam Design Hotel Pattaya

Shaking off the old & pioneering the new

by Barry Kenyon

If you ever wondered what “new Pattaya” might be like, compared with the “traditional” city, there’s no better place to start than the 268-room Siam@ Siam Design Hotel Pattaya. Located on Second Road, opposite Big “C” and Central Centre, this ultra-modern accommodation is bound to impress.

t

he artistry here is both surprising and bold, brought to life by a member of the long-established Phornprapha family which runs Siam@Siam in both Bangkok (Rama 1 Road) and Pattaya. Bold colour is everywhere – bursts of blue and sapphire here and rich dashes of orange and yellow there – with every space in the lobby and other public areas brought to life. Vivid underwater scenes entwine with Siam@Siam’s signature industrial style, especially autobmobiles, to create an atmosphere which is absolutely unique in Pattaya city. Words can hardly describe the overall impression of urban art

space. You have to be there. The general manager is Benjaphon Angsaengtham, a 49-year old Phuket-born boy who looks considerably younger thanks to a careful diet. A well-travelled guy with a degree in hotel management from Brighton University, UK, he represents the new breed of Thai hoteliers who are in tune with contemporary trends. “It’s all about customer service,” he says, “I like to be hands-on, to apply a personal touch and to typify Thai hospitality.” He adds that to be really successful you have to work continually at staff training and customer satisfaction. With a huge satisfaction rating on the feedback website

Trip Advisor, Siam@Siam can certainly feel the hotel is on the right track. Benjaphon highlights several factors to explain the success. “This is a family-run business,” he explains, “so the decision-making process is simple and straightforward. We are a new hotel in town with the latest hi-tech equipment which even includes two swimming pools with speakers

playing underwater. Also people love our guaranteed fast internet connection and the latest wizardry in the gymnasium.” The hotel has a wide mixture of nationalities, as you would expect, but there’s no particular emphasis. South East Asians mix with Russians, Chinese, Australians, Americans and Western Europeans including a solid British following. “We do tend to attract the younger market internationally, including families, who are here for business or pleasure.” There’s also substantial accommodation on the 23rd floor to cater for the growing MICE (Meetings Incentives Conferences Exhibitions) market in Pattaya with the latest audio-visual technology to support the facilities and an impressive outdoor green balcony overlooking a spectacular view, a full-function bar and a la minute food station. There is a large number of budget choices when it comes to picking a room for your stay but they all feature intricate handcrafted furnishings, high ceilings and large bay windows. There are all the usual room amenities. The colour schemes are quite unlike any seen elsewhere in Pattaya and are led by strong features representing

I like to be handson and to typify Thai hospitality takes central place, jellyfish lamps adorn the ceiling and a fish tail shapes the bar. The industrial theme is maintained by naval ships and submarines. There’s a wide-ranging and tempting menu of Thai and international dishes with a special after-hours menu from 10 p.m. At the top of the house is The Roof Mixology with its stunning double-level pool surrounded by rich greenery and star-patterned lighting. General manager Benjaphon is understandably confident about Pattaya’s future. “The city has moved a long way from its traditional dependence on night-life entertainment, but progress is really just starting,” he says. “City Hall has announced that its aim is to create Pattaya as the Thai French Riviera within 10 years and I think that Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome and his team have made a very good start.” Benjaphon adds that the main improvements still required are related to infrastructure. “There is to be a new underpass project on Sukhumvit Road starting soon to help relieve traffic congestion, and the next step is the creation of a hi-speed rail connection from Bangkok.” Siam@Siam Design Hotel Pattaya is an impressive project underpinned by

elements of nature, the ocean and industry. Quirky design features and recycled materials combine to provide home comforts and modern amenities for guests to relax at their leisure. Near the lobby on the ground floor is the totally surprising Car Bar which celebrates the world of automobiles and motoring with jeeps, rickshaws and even a flying car – suspended from the ceiling as a light fixture – providing playful and

decorative elements. There’s also an outdoor area with car seats, tents and lawn chairs evoking a rustic or backhome environment. Completing the car-themed experience are lamps made from tricycles, street-inspired walls and

even maps across the ceiling. Guests can appreciate this intriguing space whilst sipping a cocktail or enjoying a snack. The principal restaurant is The Big Fish on the sixth floor, an all-day dining outlet with a difference: an oversized fish

a very capable Thai business executive. Both of them reflect the Pattaya of the 21st century – vibrant, futuristic, youthful and ambitious. The Thai French Riviera looks decidedly on track!

Tips & Advice

What a waste of money! (Charles Winton writes) What a farce the Pattaya pelican-type road crossings have been. They were installed in 2010–at a cost of over 50 million baht, I read at the time–on many busy roads in the resort. Almost from day one they have either been ignored altogether by drivers or been put on standby mode (flashing amber) by the local authorities. Woe betide any pedestrian who thought that he or she had the right of way when the signal turned green for walking! At long last I am pleased to see that someone from City Hall has accepted that the whole project was a waste of taxpayers’ money. Meanwhile, Pattaya’s traffic chaos continues as the rest of the rules-of-the-road are ignored as well. Parking is allowed more or less anywhere and I now see that double parking is becoming increasingly common on Thepprasit and Thappraya Roads. Until the laws are enforced, and people punished, Pattaya’s traffic woes will just go on deteriorating. Eventually, we will end up with 24-hour gridlock everywhere.

Time for political solution (Lee Jacobson writes) I am fully aware that Thai politics is not the business of foreigners here. The trouble with that argument is that the country is dependent on foreign currency and a constant flow of tourists from the four quarters of the world. I simply cannot understand why the opponents of the government cannot see that,

if they succeed in bringing down the Pheu Thai-led administration and replace it by a ‘neutral’ prime minister, then the Red Shirts will simply start doing what their enemies have been doing for four months: marching around, blocking traffic, inconveniencing the public and heaping violence on themselves through grenade attacks in the dark. So the country is going round and round in circles. The only answer can be a compromise–a general election in a couple of months but a prior guarantee in writing by all parties about the electoral reforms needed and a pledge, lodged with the Royal Household, that there will be a subsequent general election using the new rules.

Amazing Pattaya (John Patterson writes) Having recently arrived in Pattaya, I was expecting to see the city very quiet. I had read in the British papers about all the political chaos here which was deterring tourists. Yet what do I find? Walking Street was packed out with visitors (admittedly many Russians and Chinese), the high-class malls were busy, and my three favorite restaurants doing very good business. I even had difficulty getting a room at the three-star hotel where I have stayed during my trips over the past seven years. Yet Pattaya is less than two hours’ drive from where all the political trouble is supposed to be! It seems that Pattaya is a success story in its own right. Making money takes precedence over all other human activity. Well done Pattaya. You are indeed amazing.

business on May 18. I am leaving the country for a short holiday on May 22, so my question is whether I need to report or not. I don’t want to pay a fine or have my name put on some list or other. A: You are in the clear on this one. The regulations state that you can report your address two weeks before the due date or one week after it. Since you are leaving Thailand less than a week after your due date, you do not need to report. I assume you have a re-entry permit and that you are a oneyear visa holder. Your 90-day cycle begins again when you come back into the country. Failing visas Q: I realize that all countries have different regulations, but what are the most common reasons why a Thai woman fails to get a visa to visit her boyfriend in Europe or Australia? I’m really looking for bottom-line advice here. A: There are really three bottom lines. The embassy will be looking for solid reasons why the applicant will return to Thailand after the holiday – employment and the ownership of land or other valuable assets are the most obvious proofs. The sponsoring boyfriend also needs to demonstrate he has a regular income and access to accommodation for the duration of the stay. Finally, it’s very important to demonstrate the quality of the relationship such as the regularity of the contact when they are in different countries, financial help, etc. Everything needs to be backed up by copious documentary evidence of which you can never have too much. Pointless 90 days Q: As the holder of an annual work permit, I cannot for the life of me think of any good reason why I need to report my address every three months. Surely it would be better if long-stay foreigners were simply told to inform Immigration as and when they move addresses? A: The point has certainly been mooted, but nothing has yet happened along the lines you suggest. There are hundreds of thousands of foreigners in Thailand reporting their 90 days – don’t forget all those Myanmar and Cambodian guest workers – and Immigration always says it needs up-to-date records as so many people move often. Giving exemption to certain categories of people would not be easy to implement. Regular reporting also assists the authorities in contacting you if they need to. Giving a false address is a criminal matter by the way! 90 days quandary Q: I am due to report my address for the 90 days

The falling pound Q: Given that the UK pound has virtually collapsed now – I remember when it was 90 baht to the pound – I wonder whether there are any plans in government circles to reduce the 800,000 baht requirement for a retirement visa. It is getting very difficult to raise the amount because of de facto devaluation. A: You won’t be surprised to hear that there are no expected developments along the lines you suggest. Exchange rate fluctuations are a fact of life everywhere. It should be noted that more retirement visas are granted to Brits than any other nationality, although that may not be true for much longer! Overstay question Q: Owing to hospital treatment I shall be nine days overstay when I leave Thailand. I understand that the fine will be 4,500 baht, but somebody told me I might be arrested or banned from returning to Thailand. Is that true? A: Your fears will not be realized! Simply pay the fine and proceed. There are no other consequences. There will be a receipt in your passport but you will be welcome to return to Thailand anytime. Not my fault Q: I suffered a near-fatal heart attack in Thailand earlier this year and will now have about seven weeks overstay problem. Since the reason was ill-health surely there is some discretion by the authorities to cancel the fine of 500 baht a day. I have all the medical receipts and reports. A: You will have to pay, I’m afraid. Overstay is overstay no matter what the reason. The only exempt categories are the people in a wooden box or in an urn, and I am glad you are not in either group.

Snap Judgment The lessons of death Recently a 36-year-old murderer, known only as Nui, was sentenced to serve life in prison for the particularly brutal rape and killing of a six-year-old Bangkok girl last year. It is suspected that the transient, without even an ID card to his name, may have murdered many other children, perhaps aided by the fact that he was not formally registered as a Thai citizen. The provincial court’s presiding judge said he was sparing Nui the death penalty because he had confessed to the killing. Nonetheless, the case raises the issue as to why Thailand needs the death penalty at all if child killers, surely the most abominable of criminals, are to be exempt. There currently are more than 100 prisoners on death row in Bang Kwang Central Prison, mostly on convictions for drug dealing and murdering adults. Thailand has already travelled far down the abolitionist road. There have only been two executions by lethal injection since the retirement of machine-gun executioner Chavoret Jaruboon in the late 20th century. Bundit Charoenwanit and Jirawat Phompruek were killed on August 29, 2009, giving rise to fears that Thailand was reintroducing the death penalty on a regular basis. In fact, no further executions have taken place. The question then arises why Thailand has not abolished the death penalty altogether in line with most countries in the world. There are many reasons. The idea of the death penalty being a deterrent to crime is still popular in Thailand, as reflected in social media and public opinion polls, so any political party advocating abolition would be risking the loss of votes in the polling stations. Not to mention the fact that, in recent years, the Thai political scene has been continually a red-hot potato in its own right without the added dimension of a public debate on lethal injection. The most likely outcome is that the death penalty in Thailand will slide into disuse, rather as it did in Britain. Although Britain formally abolished hanging for murder in 1965, a working gallows was maintained at Wandsworth prison in London until the 1990s to deal with treason, arson, and piracy, but the rope was in fact never needed. Eventually the gallows were dismantled. Some continue to argue that the death penalty is needed in the 21st century. They can point to the United States, Japan, China, North Korea, Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia where executions, sometimes grisly affairs indeed, are still performed for a variety of reasons. It is argued that fear of the final penalty is a deterrent, or that bad criminals deserve to suffer, or even that the relatives of a victim have the right in revenge to throw the switch on the condemned man or to pull the chair in public view from under his strangling body. Against this is the testimony of those who actually killed their fellow citizens on behalf of the state. Chavoret Jaruboon, who died in 2012, wrote in his autobiography, The Last Executioner, that he came to believe that none of his executions had actually deterred crime or benefited the victims. The only purpose, he candidly wrote, was to exact revenge. Albert Pierrepoint, who incidentally executed around 500 criminals as opposed to Chavoret’s 55, also confessed in his memoirs very much the same sentiments. He had become an abolitionist–although it is true that in his dotage he began to waver after a policeman friend of his was shot dead. Nonetheless, if two of the last century’s executioners who were also published authors can argue in print that the death penalty achieves nothing worthwhile and should be discarded, then it is without doubt time for a rethink in the Land of Smiles.

PSC golf from The Growling Swan Bangpra – Stableford It had been quite some time since we had played Bangpra, one of Pattaya’s oldest courses, and we were all looking forward to reacquainting ourselves with it and as Monday was a Thai Public Holiday we opted for a game on the Tuesday. We had 27 golfers signed up for the day. As we assembled at The Growling Swan we welcomed John Waugh from Darwin, Australia, Graham Rice from Gove in the Northern Territory of Australia, and Leif Kikgaard, Jan Lovgreen, Lotte Boskov, and Arne Max Pedersen of Denmark. After a good run up Route 7 we arrived to find the course quite busy, which gave us plenty of time to prepare and have a practice putt. We were called to the first tee quite quickly and managed to send our first group, a three ball away 30 minutes early. It was hot and humid with just a bit of wind. The course was in great shape, although the greens seemed to be just a tad slower than usual for this course but still posed problems for those faced with downhill putts of any size. It was slow going as there were holdups on most of the par threes and, after taking a couple of drink breaks, we managed to complete the round in the fairly-slow time of four hours and 40 minutes. It was great to play the course again after a long break and with the excellent company it was a very enjoyable day. We had two divisions–A for handicaps 0 to 16 and B for golfers on handicaps of 17 and over, with four places in each division. There were also rewards for nearest- the- pin on the four par

3’s and longest first putts on the 9th and 18th greens. Martin Todd returned to good form and won the division A with a fine score of 39 points, and with two golfers on 36 points, the resultant count-back saw Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei (18 point back nine and 13 points on the last six holes) take second spot from Mike Allidi (18 point back nine and 11 points on the last six holes) in third place. Big Bill Steinman finished fourth with a steady 35 points. Things were tight at the top of division B with two players on 38 points, so another count-back was required. That saw Arne Max Pedersen (19 point back nine) take first place from Lotte Boskov (16 point back nine) in second spot. Thientong Charoenrung came third with 34 points, one point ahead of Jan Lovgreen in fourth place. Results for Bangpra: Division A – 0 to 16 1st – Martin Todd (9) - 39 points 2nd – Alain Taddei (16) - 36 points 3rd – Mike Allidi (3) - 36 points 4th – Bill Steinman (10) – 35 points Division B – 17 and over 1st – Arne Max Pedersen (17) – 38 points 2nd – Lotte Boskov (18) - 38 points 3rd – Thientong Charoenrung (18) - 34 points 4th – Jan Lovgreen (18) – 33 points NTP’s 2nd – Jan Lovgreen

8th – Thientong Charoenrung 12th – Sal Brizzi 17th – Leif Kirkgaard LFP’s 9th – Dave Neal 18th - Bill Steinman The Growling Swan NAGA Award (going to the golfer with the worst score on the day-which is not made public) was won by firsttimer John Waugh. He accepted the award like the good sport that he is. Thientong then kindly paraded Deefa the Dog and, of course, collected many donations for the needy in Pattaya from our generous Growling Swan Golfers. It was then back to the bar for several coldies and reminiscing over the day’s golf. Growling Swan Golf, home of friendly golf in Pattaya, welcomes golfers of any persuasion– low and high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays and Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8 a.m. with transport departing at 8.30. For bookings or more information contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or email petermalcolmblackburn@gmail.com We also play bowls out of the Growling Swan every Wednesday and Sunday. Sunday is lawn bowls and Wednesday is indoor bowls. All are welcome. Transport leaves The Growling Swan at 10 a.m. on each of those mornings. For more information call Paul Rennison on 0843 454 005.

Sailing strong for 10 years: Top of the Gulf Regatta Top sailors from around the world heading to Top of the Gulf Regatta May 1 to 5 Top of the Gulf Regatta celebrates its tenth anniversary this year with top sailors from around the world heading to Pattaya to compete in Asia's largest multi-class regatta next month at Ocean Marina Yacht Club. Regularly attracting in excess of 250 boats and more than 600 sailors from over 30 countries, Top of the Gulf Regatta is known around the world for its competitive sailing across a diverse fleet of boats. This year organizers expect one of the most competitive fleets yet with boats and crew from Singapore, Australia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and from as far away as England and the United States. “The tenth anniversary is shaping up to be one of the best yet. We have a strong line-up of international boats and crew who will be racing a large fleet of local talent across twelve classes this year,” said William Gasson, chairman of the organizing committee. An iconic event in Pattaya's sporting calendar, Top of the Gulf Regatta has become

a Festival of Sail, bringing together a large fleet of keelboats and multihulls, dinghies, beach catamarans, windsurfs, the prestigious Coronation Cup and the Thailand Optimist National Championships. Seeking to promote sailing in Thailand, organizers have worked closely with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand for 10 years supporting grassroots sailing here and have given thousands of young Thai sailors the opportunity to develop competitive sailing skills at an international-standard regatta. Thai youngsters have gone on to compete in regional and world sailing championships in recent years, as well as in the Olympics. Having introduced windsurfing to the Regatta a few years ago, organizers this year bring the RS: One Asian Championship to Thailand for the first time. Gasson expects more than 30 national team sailors and Olympic hopefuls from around Asia to compete.

Top of the Gulf is the only regatta in Thailand operated from a marina. “Ocean Marina Yacht Club have been instrumental in the development of sailing in the Gulf of Thailand and in the success and growth of the Top of the Gulf Regatta over the past 10 years,” said Gasson. PSC Golf from Tropical Bert's Khao Kheow (Stableford) The first Tuesday of every month is at Khao Kheow. The question is why? The answer is because this course is one of the best around and does not make you feel anything but welcome as you play. This is also a really difficult test of golf, so when you finish your round you know that if you played well you deserve your score. So onto the course and the test for the day was the C & A nines in that order, and seeing that the players had ‘done good’ in the last couple of Tuesdays, I thought we would play off the yellow tees. This is a real test of golf and I really cannot understand how these 18 holes are considered easier than 18 holes on many courses we play. The C nine was, I believe, an add-on after the original A & B nines were finished, and to my mind it is a little lesser than the other two; it does not feel quite as polished somehow, but that is not to say it is any easier. In fact, for me this is the hardest of the three nines. And I started with two none returns just to prove it. With the wind quite strong, the day turned out quite difficult. After the C Nine the A nine, stroke index wise, is classed as even more difficult but it has a certain class. After a gentle start it turns quite difficult and the first par 3 is a real

monster when the wind is against you, and as is usual two from our four ball went in the water and one in the bunker. Still Mashi got on the green. Talking of the greens they were quite good on this day, if a little difficult. Round over, and I have to say this was one of the hottest days I can remember for some time, it was into the welcome shower and up to the restaurant. The restaurant has a fine view and it is a pleasure to sit and relax after such a hot day. Back at Bert’s a little early it was time for a couple of cold ones before the results. As planned the results were more like we expect from a tough day at Khao Kheow. In the A flight, 0 to 17, the winner was Mark West with 35 points on count-back over Brian Parish in second. In third place was Maurice Roberts with 34 points. In the B Flight, 18 up, the winner was Jim Ferris with 35 points ahead of a count-back on 34 points that saw Tom Herrington in second and George King in third. So a great day ended with a few more ‘cold un’s’. T.T.F.N. Near Pin John Hackett, Max Scott, Dick Warberg AVD, Long Putt Walter Baechli, Derek Brook Wangjuntr (Stableford) This being a long drive away,

fewer than normal turned out, but with the decision to play the valley course we still had a reasonable number. We have just reached season starts and the sports days have started to come in, so the regulars who play with us, year in and year out, will still be there week in and week out playing at low season rates. It is an ill wind, etc. So the group turned up at Wangjuntr to play the valley 18 holes, this after we played the highland 18 holes last time and, frankly, were not very impressed. ‘Spectacular’ but overly so. So we went to play these 18 holes that we have played a few times before and remembered as being an enjoyable course. However we also remember that the last time we played it poured down and the place was swamped. We hoped for better on this day. Getting to the start here is quite easy, and we saved time not travelling to the highlands start, so we were soon off. As said the last time we played here the skies opened and we were swamped out and the skies looked as if we were due some rain on this day. So it was with some apprehension we got away. Now the good news, there was not one player who did not say this course was not in really excellent condition and all had a very enjoyable round. So a really super

by Derek Brook

course on the day and well enjoyed by all. The one hiccup was that the greens have two pins on each green and on the back nine there was some problem which to play, very minor as the greens were really good. Of course it rained for a short time and after 40 minutes or so we were able to complete the round. Not only that, but the course drained fast and did not unduly affect play. This is a fine course and well worth a visit. So round over it was into transport and back to Bert’s. Back at Bert’s it was soon time to give the results but not before we all said ‘well done’ to Doug Maiko for his hole in one. We all said well done to Doug. The runaway winner on the day was Mike O’Brien with 43 points leaving the rest in the dust. In second was Andre Van Dyk, off his new ‘golfers’ handicap after playing so well of late. With 36 points he won on count-back over Dave Edwards in third. We then had a count-back on 35 points that saw Andy Purdie in fourth and Jim Ferris in fifth. Then, believe it or not, Doug Maiko bought the golfers a drink. Now there is another first; more surprising than his hole in one. Well done and thanks Doug. T.T.F.N. Tips & Advice QUICK TIP

If you enjoy soft drinks, use the tab on top of the can as a straw holder...

Old Spice Andy, your April Fools’ Day column was brilliant. I’ve always liked reading Ask Andy and I’ve enjoyed your subtle humour from time to time, and this last time your wit shown through (even in some of the dated lines you used). That said, I have a question for you. About a month ago you provided some useful information related to storing herbs and spices. But I’m left with the question: if I keep herbs and spices properly stored for a long period of time (years, maybe) will they go bad and make me ill? Cheers, Lester Thanks for your kind remarks, Lester. In answer to your question, dried-up, decades-old spices won't make you sick, but they will add little—if any--flavor to your food; nor will they impart any nutrients or health benefits. The experts at McCormick suggest that seasoning blends are good for up to a year or to two; herbs and ground spices, one to three years, and whole spices up to four years. Assault on Batteries Andy, is it a good idea to store torch batteries in the fridge? Does that help them retain their charge longer? Johnny Both Duracell and Energizer—two of the world’s leading battery manufacturers—pooh-pooh that idea for flashlight or any other type of batteries, Johnny. They stress that storage in a refrigerator or freezer is neither

required nor recommended for batteries produced today or for battery-operated devices. Cold temperature storage can in fact harm batteries if condensation results in corroded contacts or label or seal damage due to extreme temperature storage. To maximize performance and shelf life, says Energizer, store batteries at normal room temperatures (20°C to 25°C). Shock Treatment We change many equipments in kitchen, Khun Andy, and the fitters make new electric plug for washing machine, oven, cooker and etc. but when we touch the machine on metallic part we get the electric shot. Builder say now can not connect on earth so we must to keep shoes when we want to use something. Is possible to change or must break new kitchen? Somsak Electrical shocks are a common problem in houses with old wiring, Somsak, but unusual in newer homes. You’re right to be concerned because proper grounding is necessary to ensure that any misdirected current will flow through the ground wire instead of through you. Without the ground connection, you may well be the best or only path to ground (or earth), and you can receive a shock. What can you do? My best advice is to call in a qualified electrician and ask him to present you with several solutions and the estimated cost of each. Don’t be guided entirely by price; safety is the priority. Remember that you are dealing with a potentially dangerous

After opening the can, just swing the tab around so that it acts as a straw holder that also helps prevent the straw from floating out of the can. element; it is worth spending a few extra baht to protect your family from shock or worse. If a professional electrician is out of the question, then one of the cheapest and simplest ways to address the problem is by using a ground fault interrupter outlet. This is a less expensive option in many hard to re-wire cases. Instead of running a ground wire, or connecting a ground connection to the outlet, you will rely on the GFI function to provide personal protection. Such an outlet will trip when there is not the same amount of current flowing in both electrical lines. So when some of the electrical current starts to travel into the casing (toward you), the GFI will trip and stop all current flow. Better than just letting it travel to the ground via the ground wire, it stops all current flow preventing any shocks. Do not use it on equipment that uses a surge protector (like your computer). Caution: Before doing any electrical work, shut down all power. Make sure you are only working on dead, deenergized circuits. Unwanted Mat Finish We recently had the interior of our house painted, Andy. In the one room where we have carpeting, the workers dripped some paint onto the carpet. How can we get those stains out? Nina Spray window cleaner onto the carpet where there are paint stains, then wipe the paint away using a rag.

Something to Sneeze At My wife has severe allergies, especially to mold, and I have a problem with humidity (I know, Pattaya probably isn’t the best place for either of us— particularly at this time of year). Can you give us any advice on how to best eliminate or at least reduce humidity in our home, thus stemming the growth of mold as well? Nigel Unless you’ve got an airtight house or condo, Nigel, you probably won’t be able to totally eliminate humidity. But you can reduce it by trying some of the following: *Replace your bathroom exhaust fan with a high-volume model that moves a lot of air. More efficient models use a rotary blower instead of a fan blade and are quite. *If you have a clothes dryer, make sure it is vented outdoors. Check the vent tube or pipe for leaks. *After using your clothes washer, leave the lid open to let it dry out. *Vent your kitchen range outdoors. *When cooking, use a lid on pots to reduce released steam. *Put de-humidifiers in rooms or areas that are damp. *Use your air conditioner. Even when cool, don't open windows and doors to save money. Entering humidity will cause mold to grow and will cause your air conditioner to work harder, costing you more. *Check everywhere for water leaks and make needed

repairs. *Insulate cold water pipes so that condensation doesn't collect. Chip Shot Why do you think paint on walls outside my house split and crack? Now it’s only the top coat. First I noticed only hairline cracks, and then the paint began flaking and chipping. Did I apply the paint wrong? Can I fix it? Aldo The problem as you describe it could lead to complete failure of the paint over time, and you should do something sooner rather than later. As to why the paint is splitting, flaking, etc., it may have been caused by lowquality paint with inadequate adhesion and flexibility, perhaps too much thinner mixed in with the paint, spreading the paint on too thinly, poor surface preparation, or painting under windy conditions that caused the paint to dry too fast. You can try to correct cracking that does not go down to the substrate by removing the loose or flaking paint with a scraper or wire brush. Then sand to feather the edges before priming any bare spots and repainting. What Goes Around, Comes Around by Mercy Center When encountering people living in slum surroundings and desperately in need, one initially imagines that they have been born into poverty. This is not always so. It could happen to any us given the circumstances many of them have faced: death of a spouse or children to whom they had looked for support in their old age; single mothers reduced to begging or stealing or forced into the world of drugs or prostitution in order to feed their families; children or spouses in jail, or terminally ill; or investments that tied up money for a number of years. Such was the case of a grandmother we met while delivering food to a slum

community in Pattaya where residents had been forced to move from their homes when the landowner sold the property. Mercy Pattaya workers tried to locate them, but it was no easy task. One day, however, they met Grandma on the street and learned that the owner of the land on which they had lived previously, had offered them another piece of land nearby, rent free, and many of the original community (including herself ) had taken up residence on the cleaner, healthier site. Some days later, she astounded the Mercy Pattaya team when she donated several thousand baht. It seems that savings she had invested many

years earlier and virtually forgotten about had matured with an excellent rate of interest. Thrilled at her good fortune, Grandma now wanted to thank the organization for all the help she and her friends

had received during their lean years. We often hear, "What goes around, comes around," but less often in this context-a financial blessing from a most unexpected source.

How a native language can help develop English by Edward Emmet Learning, understanding and speaking English is very important in today’s life. English is either the first or second language in most countries around the world. English is the main language used on the internet and in books, so learning new information in a non English speaking country can be difficult. It is important for children who are non English speakers to learn English as a second language. The main problem parents have is forgetting the importance of the language of their child’s mother tongue. Studies show that most skills learnt at a young age in a native language can be easily transferred to English. If your child is able to read in any language, they can use this ability and transfer it

to the skills needed to read in English. A valuable reading skill is the capability to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words from context. Also when planning essay writing, examinations or other written work, the tools used in a native language can easily transfer to English. If your child is in international school it does not mean they will complete their studies in an English speaking educational system. Most children complete their education in their native country. Children who have problems speaking their native language can often feel alienated from their parents and families, which can lead to depression and loss of cultural welfare, which is why it is very important to keep developing your child’s mother tongue.

The best way to have strong native speaking skills is to have private lessons with a native speaking teacher once a week. Another way that parents could help their children to develop their native tongue is to have good native reference books or textbooks at home. When meeting family members or native friends in a non educational environment they should not be discouraged to speak in their native tongue. With one wheel (one language), you can go from place to place. With one big and one small wheel (one good and one not so good language) you can go farther and faster. With two equal-sized wheels (two strong languages) you can comfortably go anywhere you want!

GIS adds a new dimension to lessons by Mark Beales, Garden International School

IB students look on as Garden International School (GIS) teachers Stokes and Gordon practice using the Ban Chang school’s latest technology-a 3D printer. The technology works on the same theory as a normal printer but instead of using ink to produce documents, the device uses plastic to create 3D objects. Objects can be designed on a computer using a range of 3D modeling programs which are split into layers through a software program and then sent to the 3D printer where it is

produced. The newly-purchased device adds a new dimension to Design and Technology lessons at GIS. For more information, visit www.gardenrayong.com

Cats for You in Pattaya

Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Interesting Facts about Cats

If your cat’s tail is quivering while she’s close to you, it’s a demonstration of her affection for you. But if she is thrashing her tail, keep your distance because she not in the mood to play or be fondled.

Jelly

Went to a new home a few months ago but, sadly, the resident cat there did not accept the newcomer and she is back with us. She loves lots of attention and cuddles, by the way.

Some Buddhists in Japan believe that the body of a cat is the temporary resting place of spiritual people. So when cats themselves die, they turn into super spirits. The ability of a cat to find its way home is called “psi-traveling.” Experts think cats either use the angle of the sunlight to find their way or that cats have magnetized cells in their brains that act as compasses. During the Middle Ages, cats were associated with witchcraft. On St. John’s Day, people all over Europe would stuff cats into sacks and toss them into bonfires. On holy days, people celebrated by tossing cats from church towers. During the time of the Spanish Inquisition, Pope Innocent VIII condemned cats as evil and thousands of cats were burned. Unfortunately, the widespread killing of cats led to an explosion of the rat population, which exacerbated the effects of the Black Death. A cat’s nose pad is ridged with a unique pattern, just like the fingerprint of a human. REMINDER: Foods that should not be given to cats include onions, garlic, green tomatoes, raw potatoes, chocolate, grapes, and raisins. Though milk is not toxic, it can cause an upset stomach and gas. Tylenol and aspirin are extremely toxic to cats, as are many common houseplants. Feeding cats dog food or canned tuna that’s for human consumption can cause malnutrition.

Cat Corner Tip by Dr. RJ Peters to Pattaya’s cat lovers

When introducing a new cat to your home, do not simply set him on the floor and expect that he immediately will make friends with other pets or people. Chose a small room to put the new cat in and allow him to become familiar with his new surroundings and—more gradually—with new mates. Remember, it may be a stressful experience for the little guy to be subjected to a strange environment, people and other pets. A slow and gentle introduction to all things new will go a long way toward a peaceful outcome, and may preclude the cat from soiling your floor or furniture.
