Update on thai driving license
Department of Land Transport office in Banglamung
T
he director-general of the Department of Land Transport, Asdsathai Rattanadilok Na Phuket, recently invited the press to see the new procedures for applying for a Thai driving license. He pointed out that all first-time applicants, both Thai and foreign, must now achieve 90 percent correct answers in a touchscreen written test of 50 questions, chosen at random from a data bank of 1,000. The test covers safety matters on road use and is available in English or Thai. All 1,000
questions and answers are provided on the website www.dlt.go.th for study purposes, although some of the questions in English have clearly been set by nonnative speakers. First-time applicants for a one-year driving license must possess valid passport and non-immigrant visa (original and photocopy), proof of address provided by the Immigration Bureau or foreign embassy or provided on current work permit, medical certificate less than one-month-old and international or
home country license (translated if not in English and certified by respective embassy). Those without such a license are required to take additional practical and study tests. All applicants must pass a short eyesight (color perception, peripheral vision, depth perception) and reflex examination as part of the whole application procedure. Asdsathai stressed that the new regulations were designed to achieve fewer accidents on the roads. The Continued on page 4

Russian arrested for alleged pedophilia Officers from the children’s welfare office obtained a warrant to arrest Anton Protas, a 42-year-old Russian, on sex charges against young boys under 15. At his apartment room in North Pattaya, police found two laptops, a portable hard disc, many flash drives and various dolls and toys. At another address used by the Russian, investigators discovered more material and a pile of condoms. After the one-year license, applicants may apply for a full five-year permit. Required documents are the original one-year license, passport and copy showing current nonimmigrant visa, a new letter of address confirmation from the Immigration Bureau or embassy and a new medical certificate. The only tests required for these candidates are eyesight (color perception, peripheral vision, depth perception) and reflex. There are no further practical tests or written examination. The fee for five years is 505 baht and a further 100 baht for
the plastic smart card. The director-general emphasized that no third party can apply on a driver’s behalf and confirmed that life-time licenses are no longer being issued. In reply to journalists’ questions, Kosin Weerananthanaphan, head of Department of Land Transport in Banglamung, said that if a Thai driving license has been expired for more than a year, applicants must again take the written test and, if more than three years, must begin the process again as for firsttime candidates. TAT and Nat Geo launch “The Beach”
Thailand’s beaches were the focus of an hour-long documentary broadcast worldwide by National Geographic TV last month. The program marks the start of campaigns by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to promote travel following recent political unrest. Entitled “The Beach,” the TAT-supported documentary presented the story of Thailand’s beaches as depicted through the eyes of Ben Horton, a Nat Geo emerging explorer and professional photographer. Horton travelled to Phra Nang, Ao Nang, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Phangan and Hua Hin, covering beaches along the coastlines of both the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, to capture

their pristine beauty and record the experiences of foreigners and local Thais. National Geographic estimates that the documentary was seen in over 245 million households across Europe, Asia and the Middle East. It will be shown 57 times overall, and TAT will distribute it in DVD format at international travel events. TAT Governor Thawatchai Arunyik said, “Due to the political unrest in the first quarter of 2014, we had suspended all advertising in global media and replaced it with stepped up public relations and social media activities to boost visitor confidence. Now that the situation has stabilized, we are ready to resume our global campaigns.”

News Monks needed: Finnish ambassador visits Pattaya City inquire within
Buddhist temples in Thailand face a shortfall of nearly 100,000 monks. Helping to promote a campaign to attract novices, Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome presided over a ceremony at Jittapawan College where 70 men had their hair cut in preparation for being ordained. Thailand is home to about 300,000 temples, 30,000 of which are abandoned and a further 8,000 are served by a solitary monk.
Finnish ambassador Abdellatif Moufakkir and his wife made a courtesy visit to Pattaya where a City Hall reception awaited them. The ambassador said some 160,000 Finns visit Pattaya annually—a high number considering that the population of Finland is about five million. City officials and the ambassador plan to work out a mutual cooperation pact for tourism.
Pattaya dishes out the Thai Food Festival The Thai Food Festival 2014 opens this weekend at Central Festival Pattaya Beach. The city is known for being a great place for tourists to come and have fun as well as for its range of fine dining and great Thai food options.” The three day TAT event (July 4-6), now in its fifth year, will offer specialty dishes from 40 leading Thai restaurants prepared by chefs on-site. The aim is to create a real taste of Thailand. This year’s theme is ‘Herbs and Spices… Thai Taste’ to reflect Thailand’s unique blends of fragrant herbs and spices.
The show will feature such treats as tom yam, somtam, tom kha kai, phat thai, and khanom chin. Cooking demonstrations by three celebrity chefs—Oak, aka Christian Johann from Johann Bistro restaurant; Can, Thanaporn Makornwat from The Local by Oamthong Thai Cuisine; and Book, Boonsamith Pukkanasut, owner of the Book: Rad Na KhunThep and MC of the Foodwork. A host of entertainment
shows will be available throughout the three days including stage performances by a famous group from the Thailand’s Got Talent reality television series and others. News Editor’s birthday celebrated General calls peace
most important
Surasak Tumnanon, editor of the Siam Newspaper, held his 62nd birthday party at the Laan Kon Kan Eng seafood restaurant on Third Road. Guests of honor included Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome, Sansak Ngampichet, former member of the House of Representatives, and Chanyut Hengtrakul, former secretary to the minister of education.
Local labor shortage addressed Following the exodus of foreign workers caused by rumors about crackdowns on illegal migrants, the army has offered a solution. Most illegal foreign workers on the Eastern Seaboard, including Pattaya, are Cambodians mostly laborers in a variety of industries. But 1,500 businesses have been asked to report their manpower needs to the Ministry of Labour so that replacements can be found. Pravit Khiengpol, director general of the Department of Employment, said the exodus of around 100,000 Cambodians illustrated just how many businesses have relied on undocumented workers. He explained that the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO)
had not ordered a crackdown but wanted all workers regulated in order to protect their rights, adding that one-stop service centers would be established for the documentation process. Authorities are also easing legal restrictions to allow workers who have overstayed their visas to continue working while efforts are made to speed up the nationality verification procedure. Chonburi Employment Office head, Pichit Nilthongkham, said the Cambodian labor exodus had damaged many industries including agriculture, fishing, construction and tourism. He added that, although the military had stated it had no crackdown policy, rumors had undermined the morale of many guest workers.
Ladyboys continue robbing tourists
In spite of efforts by the police to clamp down on thieving transvestites on Beach Road, incidents continue on a regular basis. On Soi 4, an Indian tourist was propositioned by two ladyboys who immediately reached into the man’s pocket and removed 27,000 baht and US $900 before fleeing on a motorbike. In a similar incident, an Iranian tourist was kissed by two
katoeys who relieved the man of 200,000 baht. Police arrested more than 100 cross-dressers, but many others lurk on and around Beach Road. A spokesman noted that the problem of thieving ladyboys was made worse by the fact that the profits were often very large; he suggested that tourists should not wear expensive jewelry or carry large amounts of cash at night.
Man dumped—injured and unconscious
An injured construction worker was found unconscious opposite the Pattaya Tourist Police station. The Thai man, Anek, was rushed to Banglamung Hospital with a broken wrist and rib and injuries to his face. Police will question the man when he awakens. Meanwhile, they assume he was drunk and dumped on the roadside.
Chonburi Governor Komsan Eakachai, Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome and other senior figures at City Hall discussed the economic prospects for the Eastern Seaboard. It was noted that lifting the curfew in Pattaya and the rest of the nation produced a turnaround in tourism, improving visitor numbers in recent days as was the intention of the ruling National Council for Peace and Order. Major General Nat Intharacharoen said that the most important thing now is for
the country to be at peace while economic and social reforms are undertaken.
Boat sinks on way to Hua Hin A small motorized craft sank in rough seas near Koh Phai on its journey from Pattaya to Hua Hin. Boat owner Prasit Pinyo, 77, and passenger Tim Bunditsatien, 61, were en route to get some repairs done when the engine room flooded and the boat capsized. The two men were in the water nearly 20 hours before a Navy rescue ship took them aboard.
Python snoozes at Makro
A python measuring four meters in length was found in the Makro parking lot asleep under a pickup. Saichon Masri, a customer at the cash and carry superstore, spotted the snake’s tail and reported it to a security guard who, in turn, arranged for an expert from Thappraya Center to deal with the reptile. The professional snake catcher sprayed the python with mosquito repellent, dazing it long enough to be transported to woodlands where it was released.
Thai teens sell pistol online
Police sent undercover operatives to buy a handgun that was advertised for sale on the internet. A young man and woman—19-year-old Jakkrapan and 18-year-old Sunisa--were arrested for selling a firearm without the necessary certificate. Sunisa said she had stolen the gun from her father and gave it to her boyfriend to sell.
Tourist corpse washed up on beach The body of a 61-yearold Italian, Antonio Lardo, appeared on the northern end of Pattaya beach after being washed ashore by the tides. He was wearing a polo shirt and jeans and bore marks on his forehead which suggested a hard object had struck him. But police do not currently suspect foul play but believe he may have hit his head on a rock after entering the water. A local motorbike taxi driver said he had seen Lardo sitting on the beach earlier in the day and looking very miserable. A few days previously he had been sleeping in front of a 7-11 convenience store looking like a man without any financial resources. The body will be sent for autopsy but provisionally appears to have been a suicide case.

New project listed on CoAssets.com to make early redemption and pay crowdfunders this month CoAssets (www.coassets.com), Southeast Asia’s first real estate crowdfunding site, announced that Polaris Pte Ltd, a Singapore based opportunity provider listed on CoAssets, will be making an early redemption in July 2014 and paying crowdfunders the principal as well as proceeds from the opportunity. “While we are starting to see interests in this area, there is still some way to go before real estate crowdfunding gains mainstream acceptance. Hence, we are continuously trying to demonstrate how crowdfunding can add value to the various stakeholders through such successful deals. Polaris listed the opportunity in July 2013 with a projected time horizon of three years. Although full repayment is due in July 2016, we are happy to share that they will be making full repayment to the funders after just one year,” said Getty Goh, CoAssets CEO. This was one of the pilot real estate crowdfunding projects administered by
CoAssets and the total amount raised was S$80,000 with individual contributions ranging from S$4,000 to more than S$20,000. “In reality, we have more than S$20 million worth of assets in Singapore and we could have easily secured a credit facility with one of the banks to buy the overseas property. Nonetheless, we were intrigued by the whole crowdfunding idea and decided to give CoAssets a try. While we will still go to banks for our major financing needs, we found that crowdfunding offers a less bureaucratic route to fund smaller amounts. More importantly, crowdfunding gives us the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals and the network is something we can tap on if we decide to undertake larger projects in future,” commented Ee Ni Goh, director of Polaris. We are continuously looking at how to minimize users’ risks through robust legal and financial protections. All
these are presently work in progress and details of what such safeguards are will be announced in due course. However, if the response for EPIC 2014 [Expo for Property Investing and Crowdfunding] is anything to go by, we believe many people are excited at the potential crowdfunding holds. Hence, when the various user protections are eventually in place, we foresee that response towards CoAssets and real estate crowdfunding will be even greater,” Dr Seh added. EPIC dates July 18 and 19 at the DBS Auditorium in Marina Bay Financial Centre. This event is supported by the Singapore Tourism Board and major sponsors include DBS Bank, iProperty. com, Wealth Migrate, Dennis Wee Group, and others. For more information go to www.coassets.com/epic.

Shortly after, Freixenet, which was Pedro Ferrer´s nickname as the youngest son of the owners of La Freixeneda wine-growing estate, began to export sparkling wine, later to be denominated by their cava which has become the number one best selling cava in the world. Only wines produced in the traditional champenoise method may be labeled as cavas, those produced by other means can only be called “sparkling wines”. So it was with a glass of the excellent Freixenet Cordon Negro in hand another memorable wine dinner at Sheraton Pattaya was
launched. We gathered for pre-dinner canapés on the terrace and delicious they truly were. Chef Jack had excelled himself, the selection was extraordinary: Iberico ham croquettes, foie gras parfait, gazpacho consommé, beef carpaccio with horseradish aioli, the list went on, constraint was definitely needed as a five-course Spanish themed feast was yet to come. The dinner was being held at Sheraton’s Elements Restaurant which had been transformed into a Spanish bodega for the night bedecked as it was in the vibrant colors of the red and yellow flag. The procession of dishes commenced with an amuse-bouche featuring a favorite ingredient of ours, octopus. The pulpo had been precisely charred and was served with a garlicky Romesco sauce accompanied by crisped chorizo sausage. This classic sauce with its smoky/nutty flavor was further enhanced with paprika oil and the subtleness of the chili adding an unexpected kick to this

opening course. A recipe with legs this one! The accompanying first pour was a Freixenet Mia Blanco 2012. This proved to be a delightful wine of a yellow straw color with sweet floral aromas and a general elegance which accompanied the pre-appetizer most charmingly. The first course was named “ham & eggs” but this was no quotidian dish. The ham element was glazed
pork belly and the egg element was quail eggs. Presented on a bed of green lentils and Iberico ham the textural flavors and seasonings were top-notch and again made an ideal cohort to the now favorite Mia Blanco wine. Surf & Turf was the segundo course. Here a tranche of snowfish had been laid over a piece of Wagyu beef cheek and served with saffron potatoes. For us, this dish should not only be given stars it should be given constellations! OMG it was ambrosial; the serving of the slow braised beef with the delicacy and sweetness of the snowfish was inspirational. It was the culinary equal to an ole! moment. The complementary wine for this course was a Freixenet Mia Tinto 2012. Ruby red with an intense aroma of blackberries and blackcurrants, having been enriched by barrique tones of oak wood and pepper, it was a partnership made in heaven. We then moved on to the third course which presented grilled honey glazed squab with a barley risotto and root vegetables in a chorizo vinaigrette. Again the gastro-pattern of flavors and seasonings were superb. The wine with this course, a Solar Viejo Crianza 2010, was such a treat. This robust wine made from the Tempranillo grape variety was a gem. With a full 14 percent alcohol content and notes of caramel and vanilla this was certainly the big shot of the evening. The squab got along splendidly with this well-structured red and seamlessly brought the curtain down on the quartet of savory courses. We were not finished yet. Chef Jack still had some tricks up his sleeve in the dessert course and Freixenet wines had another treat to present. When the last plate of the evening hit the table it was a Kodak moment, an exercise in gastro artistry, the presentation

(and content) being so artistically painted, it seemed a shame to spoil the configuration by tucking in. Although the goat’s cheese panna cotta was the main event, its allied partners were also a choice act in their own right. Pineapple jam, black pepper honey, vanilla ice and even a jelly made from the paired wine, Freixenet Carta Nevada Semi Seco, the dish was a quick road to heaven and the goat’s cheese panna cotta sensational. The Carta Nevada was also an individual star. Bridging the gap between dry and sweet sparkling the taste was as dulcet and creamy as a smooth custard with just the right touch of acidity to keep it lively. This wine dinner was sensational, the wines a revelation and the six-course pageant of dishes were awesome. This was chef Jack’s first wine dinner for Sheraton Pattaya and it was “muy fino”. All that remains is to say “gracias” to everyone who made this night such a resounding success and to tip our sombrero to the Freixenet wine makers and to the chefs who made this a night to remember.
Add both rums, lime juice, sugar and syrup to a shaker and fill with ice. Shake well and strain into a rocks glass with lime wedges, mint leaves and strawberry.

De’ Papaya puts the ooh la la into Mimosa!
Up until a few weeks ago we had never visited Mimosa. You must have noticed it – it’s that extraordinary collection of multicolored vintage inspired European buildings set on Sukhumvit Road opposite Ambassador City. It has been described as a boutique-style shopping and entertainment mall with a diversity of restaurants and bars. It was opened in February 2013 since which the footfall has been considerable and our interest was tweaked. Having been invited to De’ Papaya restaurant, which is set inside Mimosa, our omission was about to be rectified. Firstly, yes, there is an admission charge to gain entry but the owner of De’ Papaya told us that if you call him from the entrance he will meet you and escort you (free of charge) to his restaurant. The chef/owner of De’ Papaya is Dean, a congenial Thai gentleman who spent his formative training years in Sydney, Australia where he gained massive experience and honed his culinary skills in preparation for the day when he would open his own restaurant. Head chef is Bang Worayod, whose experience and expertise was evident from the word go. Once you have maneuvered your way through the labyrinth of shops,
bars and eateries you will come across a large square carpeted with Astro turf and furnished with smart exterior furniture set under the trees. A live band plays nightly (7 to 11:30), and on the night we visited the atmosphere was bubbling and animated. For al fresco dining this is the place but de rigueur is to wander into the main restaurant and be amazed at the Frenchified monochrome and red décor that resembles a walk through the rues of Paris, the canals of Venice and

desirable Thai dishes and liberally sprinkled with some traditional Russian dishes as well. German beer is a highlight as are the carefullyselected wines, cocktails and mocktails. To commence our Frenchinspired experience we ordered the frog legs (B.220). Other appetizers include prawn cocktail, mussels Rockefeller, fried rock lobster with butter and garlic, som tam, a sashimi platter or the special snack platter of deep fried prawns, squid, spring rolls, samosas and French fries for B.290. The frog legs were served two ways, deep fried and a la Provencal with garlic and white wine. Both were excellent but the floured crunchiness of the deep-fried amphibian won our vote. Pastas, salads and sandwiches are available for a light lunch plus lots of seafood dishes prepared either European style or in the vogue of spicy Thai contemporary. Mixed seafood plates are popular as is the London mixed grill comprising of grilled tender beef, pork loin, chicken breast accompanied by a mushroom sauce or the pork spare ribs and the Australian rib eye steak (B.650). We elected to try a couple of their Thai signature dishes, wing bean salad and spicy prawn and pomelo salad. Penang curry with pork, chicken or beef is available as well as another of our favorites, duck in red curry (B.200). The French fusion dishes range from chicken cordon bleu to their house special French stew “chic” with mashed potatoes. The Thai salads were excellent; the warm wing bean salad displayed the required sour/sweet essence with the exact amount of roasted chili paste, toasted coconut, tamarind and lime juice for our palates, and we enjoyed the kitchen’s twist of serving it in an iceberg lettuce cup. The pomelo and prawn salad (yam som-o) was just as good, the sharpness of the pomelo providing the perfect backdrop to
ancient Rome. It reflects an unusual mix of design (think neoclassical, art deco with a touch of rococo). It’s a very artistic theme and a popular photo opportunity for visitors to the restaurant. The slinky silky black boudoir chairs, the ruby red tablecloths and that chandelier all contribute to its elegant, playful and wholly original design. Once settled inside, we studied the large pictorial menu. Described as French/Thai fusion, it is an eclectic mix of European flavors with lots of

the big succulent prawns laced with chopped mint and coriander leaves. During our meal we were quaffing the house (Spanish) Merlot and can heartily recommend it. One of the big attractions at Mimosa (and the reason for the fee at the entrance) is that throughout the day at 3, 5, 7 and 9 p.m., there is an hour-long cabaret show featuring talented ladyboys of Pattaya. We just managed to catch the last of the late show and can tell you it’s certainly bursting with pizzazz, glitz and gusto. Mimosa is an innovative attraction for locals and tourists alike. Spend some time wandering through the brightly-colored buildings to discover a myriad of multicultural eateries, bars and shops, but make sure you include a visit to De’ Papaya for a taste of European fusion cuisine with a big splash of delicious Thai dishes. To Botox or Not to Botox? by Di Barker
How Is Intradermal Botox Different? Everyone knows about Botox, the line-erasing, complexionenhancing treatment. However, there is a new Botox buzz around and it is known as Intradermal-Botox. The injections are not into the muscles responsible for facial expressions but into the erector pili–the fine muscles in the skin that control pore size. These muscles are literally within the skin, hence the name. They
are the ones that make your hair stand on end or cause goose bumps. This specific procedure is gaining favor for its oil-inhibiting, pore-reducing suppressant that is often the result of living in a tropical climate. Apparently, botulism toxin is just as good as a quick fix for those who suffer from oily skin, enlarged pores, and acne scars as those seeking to tighten their face just a touch in order to ensure a fresher and younger appearance. At Thonglor Clinic in
Jomtien, the resident doctor is a professional injector qualified to administer this treatment. He remarked that many of his patients come from overseas for this treatment and that although the procedure has been around for a while it is only recently that it has started to pick up momentum. The same vials used to freeze drooping facial muscles are injected into the top of the skin as a means of controlling the oil-producing sebaceous glands and tightening the tiny surface muscles that can lead
to visible pores. He commented that his patients typically see results in about two weeks, but that he has had some people tell him that they saw improvements within a couple of days, adding that effects last for about four to six months. Smaller pores result in a smaller skin surface area, thus stretching the skin more over the face, which results in a face lift effect. If you have oily skin, acne or fine lines and wrinkles on your face and neck, IntradermalBotox is an effective, fast-acting treatment that may be a great solution for you. If you wish to learn more about this cuttingedge technique–or if you want to schedule a consultation, contact Thonglor Clinic, Jomtien on (038)

10 Foods That Fight Pain by Laura Cox, www.UrbaneWomen.com
Do you groan in pain every time your feet hit the floor when getting out of bed? Does it feel like you have to physically snap every joint back into place with agonizing results? You may have developed a habit of reaching for the pain killers but there is another avenue and that is to learn about what foods can help you reduce your bodily aches and pains. Here are some suggestions on what to stock in your pantry: 1. Red Grapes Resveratrol is found in fairly large quantities in grapes and this compound is showing definite signs of being an anti-inflammatory. Lab work is showing that resveratrol can block certain cells from receiving the inflammation signal, which indicates that they may help in the battle against inflammatory pain.
6. Dairy This one might come as a surprise, but yogurts and cheeses are effective at reducing pain. Their pain fighting properties are contained in their calcium and vitamin D concentrations. Calcium builds strong bones and vitamin D helps to relieve periods of chronic pain.
2. Turmeric
7. Papaya Papaya is a potent combatant for the fight against pain and inflammation. The effective ingredient is papain and it is so powerful that doctors have developed ways to isolate it and inject it into back pain sufferers. Papaya should definitely be added on to the weekly shopping list. It’s versatile as it can be used in smoothies, added to salads, and can even be enjoyed in a salsa.
Turmeric contains a lot of curcumin – a well-known inflammation and pain reducing nutrient. There have been a number of studies completed on turmeric with positive results on its ability to provide effective relief from pain. Turmeric is an excellent ingredient in many dishes but works best with curry and ginger-based meals. 3. Strawberries

Strawberries are absolutely loaded with vitamin C, a well-known and powerful antioxidant that helps to relieve pain and boost the immune system. So make sure you stock up on them the next time they are in season (this is when they are cheaper and taste the best). 4. Olive Oil This Mediterranean delicacy has a little-known secret, which is the fact that olive oil contains a powerful brew of antioxidant polyphenols. These act in the body to block a common pain-causing mechanism in the body. Moderate use is recommended however, as olive oil can contain up to 120 calories in just one tablespoon. 5. Salmon Most people know about the health benefits of salmon, but do you know that it is also an excellent ally in the battle against pain? The pain relieving properties come from its high concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids, but it also has a fairly decent concentration of vitamin D as well, which is another ingredient useful in the fight against pain and inflammation.
8. Nuts A bit of research will reveal that almonds and walnuts are an excellent source of omega 3 fatty acids and are rich in antioxidants – both of which have terrific pain fighting properties. So make sure you have a handful every day (but not too many as they pack quite a few calories into a small area). 9. Dark Cherries Dark cherries are a good source of anthocyanins, which work in a similar way to ibuprofen or aspirin by switching off the body’s signals for pain. Just throw a handful into your fruit salad or mix some in with your morning juice. 10. Ginger
Ginger has been used in India for centuries to treat inflammation and pain. What the ancient Indians probably didn’t know is that ginger’s pain fighting properties come from its ability to reduce pain inducing prostaglandin levels. Studies of sufferers from muscle pain have almost invariably registered signs of improvement after they were given ginger. Spritzing for beauty Ladies, if you want to be perceived as more attractive, reach for the cologne. That, in essence, was the conclusion of a small study by the Monell Chemical Senses Center, which reported that women’s faces are rated as more attractive in the presence of pleasant odors. Thus, the use of cologne, perfume and other scented products may, to some extent, alter how people perceive one another. “Odor pleasantness and facial attractiveness integrate into one joint emotional evaluation,” said lead author Janina Seubert, PhD, a cognitive neuroscientist on the Monell research project. Perfumes and scented products have been used for centuries as a way to enhance overall personal appearance. Previous studies had shown perception of facial attractiveness could be influenced when using unpleasant vs. pleasant odors. However, it was not known whether odors influence the actual visual perception of facial features
or alternatively, how faces are emotionally evaluated by the brain. Seubert contends that the research findings “may indicate a common site of neural processing in the brain.” The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania study focused on the principle that judging attractiveness and age involve two distinct perceptual processing methods: attractiveness is regarded as an emotional process while judgments of age are believed to be cognitive, or rationally-based. Indeed, it was shown that odor had less effect on the evaluation of age. It should be noted that the study was small, involving only 18 young adults, two thirds of whom were female.
The average adult heart beats 72 times a minute; 100,000 times a day; 3.6 million times a year, and 2.5 billion times during a lifetime.
“These findings have fascinating implications in terms of how pleasant smells may help enhance natural appearance within social settings,” says study co-author Jean-Marc Dessirier, lead scientist at Unilever. “The next step will be to see if the findings extend to evaluation of male facial attractiveness.”

The Division Bell – Pink Floyd The Division Bell is the fourteenth and final studio album by English progressive rock group Pink Floyd. It was released in the UK by EMI Records on 28 March 1994, and the US by Columbia Records on 4 April. The music was written mostly by David Gilmour and Richard Wright; lyrically, the album deals with themes of communication. Recording took place in several locations, including the band’s Britannia Row Studios, and Gilmour’s houseboat, Astoria. The production team included Pink Floyd stalwarts such as producer Bob Ezrin, engineer Andy Jackson and saxophonist Dick Parry. Gilmour’s new wife, Polly Samson, co-wrote many of the album’s lyrics, and Wright performed his first lead vocal on a Pink Floyd album since 1973’s The Dark Side of the Moon.

LAWRENCE IN ARABIA: WAR, DECEIT, IMPERIAL FOLLY AND THE MAKING OF THE MODERN MIDDLE EAST By SCOTT ANDERSON 9780307476418 The story is fascinating and unforgettable. And the characters are so compelling that they seem to have been plucked from a novel. During World War I, the course of the modern day Middle East was set by a handful of young, low-ranking actors who exerted oversized influence on the region. Anderson focuses our attention on four men: a minor German diplomat and spy, an American oilman descended from the Yale family, a Romanianborn agronomist, and T.E. Lawrence himself. As we witness the western nations attempting to carve up a region that they were never able to master, these adventurous and often duplicitous men come to full life–none more so than Lawrence.

Ruffino Restaurant & Lounge Food Highlights The newly-opened restaurant is the first venture in which Ruffino and a hotel operator have combined to use the Ruffino brand for a restaurant outlet. In 1877, Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino laid the foundations of their dream to make the most known and loved Italian wines in the world from the heart of Tuscany. At their winery in Pontassieve, just outside
of Florence, they began producing wines according to strict quality standards and rigorous technical research. Soon, Ruffino became an international symbol of the Chianti region, and won numerous awards, including the prestigious gold medal at the Bordeaux Wine Fair in 1895, affirming the quality of its wine. In 1913, the Folonari family purchased Ruffino

and brought new talent, energy and enthusiasm into the company. They started on a nearly century-long pursuit to develop a collection of estates in Tuscany, all of which matched the standard of quality and uniqueness which was the trademark of Ruffino wine. Over the last 60 years, Ruffino has established seven prominent estates in Tuscany, all situated within the major DOCG production regions including Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Chianti and Chianti Classico. Today, Ruffino continues to meld century-long Tuscan traditions with new state-of-the-art cellar technology and modern winemaking for an ideal symbiosis with the energy of contemporary Italian lifestyle.
Ruffino’s debut menu includes signature dishes that have been collected from different parts of the long Italian coastline. Appetizers range from buffalo mozzarella bites to fresh tomato soup, and zuppa di funghi della maremma, a soup of porcini mushrooms cooked in a beef broth. Grilled zesty and spicy mussels are served with prosciutto-flavored bread crumbs, and there is a saffron fettuccine with pork cheek, truffle, scallops and mushrooms. Along with the extensive selection of Ruffino wines, there is a wide choice of wines from around the world. A live DJ on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, along with a host of food and drink specials throughout the week, including “Buy 1 Get 1 Free pizza” specials, Sunset-hour drink prices, and a 4-course set menu.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS by: Magna Carta Law Office
Marriage Visa in Thailand What is Thailand Marriage Visa? A Thailand marriage visa is the type of visa granted to the foreign spouse of Thai citizens wherein the holder is entitled to stay in Thailand for one calendar year. How do I qualify for a Marriage Visa? You can qualify to be granted a Marriage Visa if you are: 1. Legally married to a Thai national, and 2. Able to satisfy either of the following financial requirements: • savings of 400,000 baht deposited in a Thai bank account two months prior to visa application, or • monthly income of at least 40,000 baht. What are the required documents in applying for a Marriage Visa? - Passport with validity of not less than 18 months - Completed visa application forms - Three passport-sized photos (4x6cm) of the applicant taken within the last six months - Evidence of the spouse’s Thai nationality: Thai ID Card and House Registration Book - Family picture of the applicant with the Thai spouse and child/children - Map to the applicant’s residence in Thailand - Certificate of Marriage - A letter from the foreigner’s embassy verifying the foreigner’s monthly income or monthly pension of at least 40,000 baht, or - Original bank statement and a Letter of Guarantee from a Thai bank reflecting a bank deposit totalling not less than 400,000 baht, or - A valid work permit and a letter from the Thai employer evidencing a monthly income of at least 400,000 baht. Is a one-year Marriage Visa renewable? A Marriage Visa may be renewed annually at the Thai Immigration Office by showing the same documents as required in your first application except that the funds in the Thai Bank must be reflected for three consecutive months prior to the visa renewal. What restrictions must I consider while holding a Marriage Visa? As a Marriage Visa holder, you will be permitted to stay in Thailand for one year from the date your marriage visa is granted. You must report to the Immigration officer in your area of residence every 90 days during your stay in Thailand. During this
period, if you wish to leave and re-enter the country, you are required to apply for and obtain a re-entry permit (single or multiple) at the Immigration Office before leaving the country. If you leave without a re-entry permit, the permit for you to stay for the rest of the marriage visa duration will become invalid. Can I apply for this Visa outside Thailand? You can start the Marriage Visa procedure outside Thailand, preferably from your home country, by obtaining a Non-Immigrant Visa which will be valid for 90 days from the date of entry. A Non-Immigrant Visa can be extended or converted to a One-Year Visa Extension of Stay Based on Marriage in Thailand during the last 30 days of your permitted stay. The 90-day validity of your Non-Immigrant Visa shall give you enough time to deposit in a Thai bank the required amount of money which must be reflected for two months in the bank transaction certificate upon your visa application. Will I be allowed to work if I am holding a Marriage Visa? Marriage Visa holders are allowed to work in Thailand by obtaining a valid work permit before starting to work. This is considered an advantage to any foreigner’s employment prospects as they would only have to deal with securing a work permit. What happens to my Marriage Visa in the event of a divorce? In the event of a divorce, your marriage visa becomes invalid on the divorce date. However, in some cases, the visa holder may be allowed to stay in the country until the expiration of the current marriage visa. So if you expect to divorce, consult a good law firm well in advance.

Expat Money Corner by Tim Whiteley
Making money work – well! No one would pretend that the world’s stock markets are the most stable of places at the best of times, but there was an old adage that, given 10 years, whichever of the main index tracker funds you selected, you would be better off than when you started, even if you bought at a peak and sold in a trough. There are still instances when this is true but, for example, using the MSCI, formerly Morgan Stanley Capital International Index, which is often used as a common benchmark for world or global stock funds, had you invested in an MSCI tracker fund during August 2000, a decade later, you would still be down; something almost unheard of previously. The general malaise of the markets, since the subprime debacle in the United States, starting in 2006 has left many wondering where they can find any degree of predictability, away from all the downbeat news from Europe and the subsequent slowing down of the so-called ‘drivers’ for the recovery of the world economies, such as China and India. With historically low interest rates, the banks offer little solace with interest rates unable to match even relatively low rates of inflation, let alone provide any growth. During this period, there has been a significant increase in funds set up covering niche sectors, capitalizing on the high level of demand that still prevails in such markets and the attraction is simply that. Economics 101, for those of us that initially studied using Hanson textbooks, rams home the point that when demand exceeds supply, prices will rise and any such market will remain buoyant. The proliferation of such funds is an indication that demand is mushrooming for alternatives that offer sensible and consistent returns, with proper security. When all is said and done, most of us want the same thing when looking for somewhere to place our nest egg: a reasonable return with little or no risk! To be frank, that aspiration has always been a tricky match, however, the advent of specialist funds concentrating on arenas where high levels of demand can be seen well into the middle distance, has opened up a number of worthwhile possibilities with a genuine likelihood of fulfilling that promise. Our experience shows that well over 90 percent of those who receive a 6 percent or 8 percent steady return are happy, particularly in these times. Those looking for higher profits should also remember another old adage which still remains true – ‘reward is commensurate with risk’. Actually, the fact is that many looking for more are young with 15+ years to waste aiming for bigger figures. For those of us that haven’t got that sort of time to throw away and require income, a secure 6 or 8 percent is very attractive. There are several sectors enjoying the benefits of burgeoning demand in this developing market place. Nonetheless, careful selection is still required. Of prime importance are the fund’s custodians (the safe keepers of investors’ money). It should be a major international bank. Also, who are the auditors? Again, we should be looking for major international firms. Then, there is the question of where is the fund domiciled; it should be a jurisdiction that is financially well regulated and has a correspondingly high degree of investor protection. Notwithstanding all of the above, everyone’s individual circumstances should be properly assessed by independent financial advisers, prior to making any decisions. Thailand the ‘Come Back Kid’! With the imposed nighttime curfew recently having been lifted after Thailand’s latest military coup it is more than likely to give a much-needed boost to Thailand’s lucrative tourism industry. Scared away by months of sometimes hostile political turmoil, will it take much time to draw back the many overseas travelers that cannot seem to get enough of Thailand? This situation reminds me so well of the post red shirts takeover of downtown Bangkok during April and May 2010 which paralyzed parts of central Bangkok, triggering a military crackdown. Following the end of all of the turmoil in Bangkok international arrivals increased robustly through the rest of 2010 and all the way through to June 2011. At that time the Asia Pacific region experienced the world’s second fastest tourism recovery, according to the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Second only to the Middle East and its 20 percent increase in foreign arrivals, the Asia Pacific region lead the way in the world’s tourism recovery, with international arrivals increasing year-overyear through June of 2011. Thailand’s own international arrivals increased a very impressive 14 percent, which was completely unexpected and most encouraging in spite of the chaotic political turmoil earlier that year. From 1997 to 1998, Thailand’s recovery from the Asian financial crisis depended mainly on exports and although agricultural workers continued to make up 49 percent of Thailand’s labor force, the comparative involvement of agriculture to the Thai GDP has weakened while exports of goods and services have expanded greatly. Yes, agriculture is still the primary means of Thailand’s employment, but industry, commerce, and services account for 80 percent of the Thai gross domestic product. One of Thailand’s greatest contributors to its emerging economic growth over the last 15 years has been its huge emerging auto industry, ranking Thailand as one of the highest among the world’s automotive export industries along with the manufacturing of electronic goods. High-technology products such as integrated circuits and parts, electrical
by Clayton Wade Managing Director
appliances, and of course, vehicles are now leading Thailand’s strong growth in exports. With their tremendous automotive industry selling automobiles and auto parts throughout the region, Thailand has emerged as the second largest manufacturer of trucks in the world behind America. Rising tourism, persistent agricultural exports and a world-class automotive industry have contributed to making Thailand the second largest economy in Southeast Asia after Indonesia. It’s just a matter of time and we will see Thailand moving up the ladder as one of the fastest growing economies in Southeast Asia--poised once again to continue its ‘Comeback Kid’ reputation. With all the coups, chaos and controversy quickly being replaced by a military government that has gained the respect of the entire region, I can just see Thailand once again looking to regain its status as the fastest growing nation in the world as it was back in 1995. So, just how does all of this affect Pattaya and the Eastern Seaboard of Thailand’s real estate industry? Well, for starters, over 90 percent of Thailand’s automotive industry is right here in the Pattaya Eastern Seaboard area. You may ask, just what does the automotive industry have to do with real estate sales in our area. Combined with the Laem Chabang and Map Ta Phut deep sea port industrial sites and their huge petrochemical industries, the Eastern Seaboard’s automotive industry has created a huge rental boom in our area. This increase in rental property consumption has, in turn, created a tremendous interest in investment properties for foreigners and Thais alike. What are the signs of this trend in our local property development scene? The signs are everywhere! The Pattaya Eastern Seaboard area continues to experience unprecedented growth in the real estate sector. There is building and construction everywhere and we are seeing some of the biggest Bangkok developers continuing to present new high-rise developments to the area. Local developers are in heated competition; Pattaya’s Cozy Beach area is
Premier Homes Real Estate Co., Ltd. clayton@premierinternational.com
BMW Manufacturing Thailand plant in Amata Nakorn Industrial Estate, Rayong filling up fast and Jomtien’s Second Road and beach areas are producing one new condominium after another. This unprecedented surge in construction and development is not limited to condominiums as we are seeing a number of our popular residential housing developments launching second and third phases throughout the area and some very nice high-end housing coming onto the development scene. Even Silverlake, south of Pattaya, is showing great signs of taking off as one of the area’s premier destinations with new Silverlake Wine facilities opening as we speak and the new Silverlake water park, Ramayana, is very far along with its construction progress. Yes, as Phuket is now busy trying to reinvent itself, the Eastern Seaboard is placed to be a contender for high-end luxury homes in the coming few years. High-rise beachfront condominiums, inner city living boutique condominiums and luxury housing developments all are going to contribute to Thailand’s greatest real estate comeback to date. With recent yearly Thailand Property Awards results, the Thai real estate sector has watched the Eastern Seaboard climb, step by step, as a contender in this very competitive residential real estate industry. It was just a couple years ago that the entire Thailand property industry took notice as the Eastern Seaboard was without

There is no longer any question about the position the Eastern Seaboard has in the Thailand real estate industry as being second only to Bangkok in condominium design and construction and personally, I can see that one of these years the Eastern Seaboard is going to win Thailand’s Best Condominium Development…..you just watch and see! Remember, it was just a couple of years ago that the entire world was watching as Thailand appeared to be crashing and burning into a rubbish of colored shirts and rhetoric and we are now just emerging from a military coup. That all seems to be far far behind us now as we move into the second half of 2014 with all areas of Thailand’s economy stabilized and growing once again thanks to our impressive military leadership under General Prayuth Chan-ocha. Everyone loves a great comeback and Thailand has provided the world, time after time and once again with another fantastic Cinderella Story in the making. Marketing Amari Ocean and Amari Garden Pattaya Sukanyapach Homchuen has the inside story by Barry Kenyon
Amari Pattaya is part of the Onyx Hospitality Group which is owned by the family behind the Italian-Thai Development Public Company Ltd., one of Thailand’s leading companies with a wide range of commercial interests both here and overseas.

he 523-bedroom Amari Pattaya is at the very heart of the hospitality business on the Eastern Seaboard, being host to leisure, corporate, conference and incentive guests alike. A star player in Pattaya’s luxury accommodation scene for many years, the combination of expansive grounds withy manicured gardens, two swimming pools, a choice of four- or five-star accommodation and a renowned reputation for customer care, Amari Pattaya remains a front runner in the resort hospitality stakes. Appointed in January 2014, executive assistant manager Sukanyapach (Naa) Homchuen has the prime responsibility for bookings operations which covers a wide field and includes supporting revenue targets, customer care, staff training and
a close relationship with housekeeping. Specializing and majoring in the travel industry at Rajabhat Institute Nakhon Pathom, Naa spent around 20 years gaining experience in a variety of leadership roles in Thai hotels and resorts, principally those within the Marriott group. Naa symbolizes the new generation of managers in Thai hotels who are increasingly female and always are keen to achieve their targets by quantifiable targets and results. “We have two choices for guests as regards accommodation,” says Naa. “The original Garden Wing is classified as four-star and the 226 rooms are well furnished with a mixture of mahogany wood and natural-toned fabrics.” She explains that the newer and more modern five-star Ocean Tower has 297 rooms, each with a private balcony, dark wood furniture and sleek glass and
contemporary furniture. When you market first-class Pattaya hotels, by default you also market the city. “Pattaya has changed out of all recognition, “says Naa, “and it is still evolving with the active support of the City Hall authorities. The resort is no longer a predominantly nightlife resort and the choice of accommodation, malls, restaurants and sports in many ways equals anything that Bangkok has to offer.” She adds that the position of Amari at

The widely-advertised Sunday brunch by universal assent is spectacular. As the advert says, “It’s the best reason to get out of bed on a Sunday morning.” Incidentally, there’s a walk-in wine cellar with over 160 branded wines from all over the world including bottles of rare Bordeaux. Also on site is Tavern by the Sea, a sports club and restaurant with big screen televisions and a youthful atmosphere. The decor includes faux American-style gridiron-football memorabilia in one corner and Premier League in the other. There are buffet specials on various days of the

Tips & Advice die during the flight. Thus they may require a nurse or even a doctor to accompany him. Choose an airline and start the procedure is my advice.
Down and Out Q: A friend of mine, who is 78 and ill, has run out of money in Thailand and has nobody to fund his repatriation back to UK. He has a modest amount in a UK bank but has lost his password and cannot access it online. Surely there must be someone or some organization out there who can financially assist this old man get proper medical care back in his own country? A: You can only get the exact attitude of this man’s embassy by contacting the consular affairs section. It has been my experience that embassies largely restrict their services to offering to contact friends or relatives worldwide to send cash to help out. If he is able, your friend should write to his bank in UK and explain about the password. The bank will at some stage want to speak to him personally by phone, but it is possible (not certain) they will reactivate the account. Fit to travel Q: I have a friend in his 80s who wants to return to his home country because he is sick and no longer wants to live in Thailand. He has the funds to return but we are not sure of the procedure. He has a Thai retirement visa but is unclear whether he should cancel it or not. He suffers from a serious heart condition and is an unsteady walker on some days, but I think he is fit to travel. Have you any advice? A: There is certainly no harm in informing his embassy, in view of the circumstances, although they are not responsible for the travel plans of their nationals so it is not essential. No need to cancel the visa. The big issue is whether the airline is willing to accommodate a man in the condition you describe. The possession of a ticket and the opinion of his friends are not good enough. Each airline has its own procedures, usually including the submission of a detailed form and medical documents. The airline is the key player in the scenario you describe as the last thing they want is for a passenger to fall really sick or to
Lionel McCarthy
A former bank executive who spent his later years running Duc’s, a bar and coffee shop near Soi 17, has died after suffering a sudden heart attack. Lionel McCarthy, popularly known as Duc, had previously worked as an executive for several international banks in Europe and in the Far East. Although born in UK, his family lived in Australia where his mother still resides. As a bar owner Duc hosted quiz evenings and book sales and was generally seen as the type of publican who tried to create a “pub” atmosphere. He had a large collection of books and DVDs which were available to his customers on a sale or return basis, and was regarded as an expert on classic movies of which his favorites were Casablanca and Gone with the Wind. He retired from bank responsibilities in 2000 and had rarely left the country until his untimely death in early June. He often enthralled his customers with tales about the history of Pattaya nightclubs on which subject he claimed to be a homespun expert.
Late passport Q: I am still waiting for my new British passport after a wait of two months. But, shortly, both my visa runs out as well as my 90 days report. If my passport does not arrive in time, I will need to pay a lot of fine money to the Immigration Bureau. Surely this is unfair when the lateness is not my fault. You may have seen on the internet that the British government admits there is a logjam of passport applications. A: Going into overstay is likely to cost you more than the 90 days. Thai authorities are not responsible for delays in embassies so you are unlikely to get any discretion I imagine. The one thing you could do, unless the new passport arrives very soon, is to visit the immigration with your current passport if you have it. You could perhaps renew your 90 days using the old one and may even get a new one-year visa – but only if the passport isn’t full or is nearing expiry. In other words, whether you can do anything about this probably depends on the status of your current passport. Obviously if you have lost it or it has expired, you have no chance to avoid the fines. It is for reasons like this that the Immigration Bureau has suggested renewing your passport a year or more ahead of its expiry date. Bangladeshi query Q: I am a citizen of Bangladesh who obtained a two months tourist visa at Dhaka which are almost used up. If I go to Cambodia will I be able to obtain a new visa from Phnom Penh. Are there any other countries which will enable me to come to Thailand again? A: You could, of course, extend your current visa by 30 days at a Thai Immigration office. But you need to return to Dhaka to obtain another visa to visit Thailand. It is not possible at the moment for citizens of Bangladesh to go on a visa run to obtain a new visa as you hope. Same-sex marriage Q: To settle an argument, can my same-sex partner and I get married at the British embassy in Bangkok. I am a UK citizen. A: No. The Thai government does not currently recognize gay marriage or civil partnerships. Some embassies do perform the ceremony but only if the host government recognizes the procedure. Further details are on the British government websites dealing with marriage and civil partnerships.
Duc notoriously was reluctant to visit hospitals or to see to his own health issues. He had been ill for several days before his death but had not sought medical advice. The funeral was held at Wat Chaimongkol, South Pattaya, on June 15 and was attended by around 50 expats and Thais. Lionel McCarthy was 65.
Snap Judgment A very different coup When the history books are written, they will surely distinguish between the 2014 military putsch and its predecessors. Military intervention in 1991 and 2006 quickly led to the army washing its hands and passing over control to interim governments led by Anand Panyarachun and General Surayud Chulanont, respectively. Both of them tried to avoid being viewed as puppets of the military. But it’s all very different this time. Army chief and junta head General Prayuth Chan-ocha is a real reformer and could well become the country’s interim prime minister under a government likely to be nominated in August or September. By that time, the general will be retiring on age grounds from his army job. Such a transition would once have been regarded as unthinkable. But not now. Indeed, it is probable that the majority of people in Thailand would actually welcome the move as they believe that strong and decisive leadership is needed if the country is to undertake major political and economic reform. General Prayuth, unlike previous coup leaders, has already undertaken a number of reforms which have attracted wide public support. They include paying the farmers their due under the admittedly discredited populist subsidy scheme of the overthrown government, beginning to tackle entrenched corruption and promoting a “return happiness to Thais” campaign by free movies and free World Cup matches. The abolition of the curfew has also been a feather in the general’s cap. Initial public reaction abroad was negative as you would expect as the word “coup” is a boo term in anybody’s vocabulary. In particular, the western nations simply pulled out of the bottom drawer their prepared speeches on the need to have a general election as quickly as possible. This hostility has recently been tempered with the United States in particular motioning that it is still friends with Bangkok. It was always unthinkable that president Obama would abandon Thailand and allow China to replace American influence. The ASEAN states have on the whole adopted the position that they should not meddle in the internal affairs of other countries. What is clear is that the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), the mouthpiece of the junta, has learned from the mistakes of previous coups. The 2006 putsch was a disaster from the coup makers’ perspective. It was called to curtail corruption and to end the influence of the Shinawatra clan. In practice precisely the opposite was the actual outcome. General Prayuth recognizes the need to use his powers to bring about real change. This is something both new and revolutionary in Thai political thinking. Of course, everything could unwind. The honeymoon period for the junta won’t last for forever, although, so far, there has been very little substantial complaint. Many of the government’s opponents, particularly the red-shirted ones, have been shunted into silence as part of the deal to free them after they were told to report to the military authorities for a chat. The real test will likely come after the repeal of martial law with its court decisions which cannot be appealed. Politically, Thailand remains divided under the surface. Much remains to be done, not least the recovery of international tourist confidence, but there is a sense at the moment that Thailand is on a path to genuine reform, even to reconciliation. By the end of this year, it will be possible to know whether the belief is well-founded or an illusion.

PSC 133rd monthly golf tournament Following the previous weeks’ AGM, former golf chairman Joe Mooneyham was elected vice president and Mark West golf chairman. Today’s tournament was the swan song for Joe and an introduction to Mark. It being the low season, the number of players was fewer than normal but all had an enjoyable day with the weather not too hot and the course in good shape. Despite the infiltration of a couple of 5 balls, all rounds were completed in around 4 hours. On the reception desk were Joe, Mark and Nigel. Many took the opportunity of meeting Mark and wishing him well, acknowledging that Joe would be a hard act to follow. Later Joe and Mark received the cards and clearly there were going to be some good scores.
The low gross winner was Mike Allidi (3) with a great 72 – gross. Jeff Wylie (6) took ‘A’ flight with a net 74. An unusual situation in ‘B’ flight occurred when 3 players all came in with 41 points, the count-back went to the last 3 holes with Wolfram Krueger (17) being declared the winner. ‘C’ flight produced the best Stableford of the day with Malcolm Farquharson (26) coming in with 43 points. Just a few ladies today; one with 41 points: Rungratree Puangsal (12) was a clear winner. It was an early finish so many went home before going to The Players Lounge for the presentation and buffet. Most players came for the presentation with many bringing their

partners and families to enjoy the excellent food and drink. Nigel introduced Joe and Mark. Joe expressed his appreciation for the support the PSC members had given him over the last 4 years and thanked the office staff, William, Noy, and Nigel, as well as management and staff of The Players Lounge. Mark said he had already appointed a golf committee to assist in him as golf chairman and wished Joe well as VP. Nigel then announced the winners and Joe presented the prizes. The 50/50 draw was won by Bryan Neal. The next PSC monthly is scheduled for July 25 at Pattana Golf Course with the buffet and presentation at Shenanigans in Jomtien. Note this is a change in date.
Stuvik scores double victory in Spain Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik won both races in the third round of the EuroFormula Open Championship at Jerez Circuit in Spain last week. The Thai driver clinched pole position for the first race, in front of Polish championship leader and teammate Artur Janosz. Stuvik proved untouchable as he gradually pulled away from the pursuing Formula 3 cars, winning the race, with Janosz in second and Israel’s Yarin Stern in third. In the morning qualifying round for the
second race, Janosz secured pole position; Spain’s Alex Palou took second place, and Stuvik third. As the race started Janosz cut in the front of Palou, earning a drive-through penalty. Stuvik overtook the Spanish driver through turns three and four. After Janosz served his penalty, the Thai driver found himself in a solid lead and finished 6 seconds ahead of second-placed Palou. Again Stern won third place. Stuvik is now firmly in the lead of the
championship with 124 points; Janosz has 93 points, and Palou 87 points. The fourth found is July 4 to 6 at Hungaroring Circuit in Hungary. After the race, the Thai driver thanked Team RP Motorsport “for giving me such a fantastic Formula 3 car and for being able to build the car so well around my driving style.” Stuvik races for the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand and is sponsored by The Pizza Company, Singha Corporation and Dacon Inspection Services.

PSC Golf from The Growling Swan
Pleasant Valley, Stableford Pleasant Valley was the venue for our first game this week with 24 on the starting sheet. Buckers was back from the UK and his “driver” Tom Cotton also presented himself again. We also welcomed back Alan Ray from Melbourne and Steve Truelove from Sydney. It was sadly time to say farewell to Greg Preferment who is returning to Sydney. After exiting Pattaya effortlessly we headed North up number 7 and arrived at the golf course just 40 minutes later. The car park was nearly empty so after a quick check in we were all raring to go and told that we would be starting on the 10th tee which quite frankly is not my first option but “it is what it is.” The weather was good, hot with some breeze, and the course was looking in very good shape. Our first four ball got away 15 minutes ahead of our allotted time at 9:45 a.m. and with no-one directly in front of us we proceeded at a reasonable pace. As mentioned earlier the course was very good although damp in parts so we played preferred lies through the greens and the greens were somewhat slow with a couple of them having residual sand on them. We stopped for a drinks break just before the fourth tee and after continuing managed to complete an enjoyable round of golf with good company in four hours and 15 minutes. We had two divisions – A for handicaps 0 to 17 and B for golfers on handicaps of 18 and over with three places in each division. There were also rewards for nearest-the-pin on all the par threes and longest first putts on the 9th & 18th greens. It was close at the top of division A with two golfers on 43 points and the resultant countback saw first place being awarded to Mike “Hunter” Gosden (23 point back nine) with Bob Akapita (18 point back nine) finishing second. Another count-back with two golfers on 38
points resulted in Gerd Riedler (20 point back nine) being awarded third place with Mike Allidi (19 point back nine) just missing out. Ken Hole lost two shots off his handicap after the previous Thursday’s 49 points at Bangpakong but it didn’t seem to bother him as he scored 41 points and was the winner in B division. With two golfers on 40 points another count-back was needed and resulted in second spot going to Patrick Poussier (19 point back nine) with Sandy “Cyndi Lauper” Leiper (18 point back nine) finishing third. Results for Pleasant Valley: Division A – 0 to 17 1st – Mike Gosden (13) – 43 points 2nd – Bob Akapita (17) – 43 points 3rd – Gerd Riedler (7) - 38 points Division B – 18 & over 1st – Ken Hole (18) – 41 points 2nd – Patrick Poussier (23) - 40 points 3rd – Sandy Leiper (33) - 40 points NTP’s 5th – Ken Hole 8th – Gerd Riedler 13th – Steve Truelove 17th – Ken Hole LFP’s 9th – Steve Truelove 18th – Paul Kennedy The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by Tom Cotton who accepted the award like the good sport that he is. Tips & Advice QUICK TIP
If you want to improve the appearance of your brass fixtures and ornaments, rub them down with olive oil after each polishing. Just moisten a soft cloth with olive and wipe. The brass will look brighter, will require less polishing and will resist tarnishing.
Rain Bane Pattaya has had some heavy rains lately, Andy, as you know, and I think that’s the reason our tap water is discolored (actually, just plain filthy). I don’t expect you to do anything about that, but maybe you can tell us what to do about the tainted water causing stains in our toilet bowl and sink. Both my wife and I have scrubbed and used all kinds of cleaning products, but the stains won’t come out. What is the best way to clean them and get rid of the stains? Norman Empty your toilet bowl of water and let it—as well as your sink—dry out. Meanwhile, prepare a paste of cream of tartar and hydrogen peroxide. Apply the paste to the toilet and sink surfaces, scrubbing as you do so, and then let the solution dry. Once dry, scrub again, and then rinse thoroughly. Curry Worry Quick question, Andy. I made a curry dish the other night and now—four days later—the pungent odor lingers in my microwave. Now I worry that I’ll never be able to get rid of the curry smell. Any ideas? Hattie Quick answer, Hattie. Chop half a lemon into 4 pieces and put them in a small bowl of water with a few whole cloves. Boil in microwave for 5 minutes.
Your friend’s advice is valid as is your concern, Katrina. But there is more to it than that. First of all, the reason a paper filter should be used is because it removes a substance in the coffee that causes increased LDL cholesterol. Coffee beans contain cafestol, a substance that significantly increases levels of cholesterol by inhibiting the body’s ability to process cholesterol. Paper filters remove this substance from the brewed coffee; basket filters do not. As to white filters containing an unhealthy substance that causes cancer, you no doubt are referring to dioxins, which the World Health Organization has labeled “highly toxic.” True, dioxins are found in chlorine bleached coffee filters, and they do get transferred to your coffee. But not all white coffee filters are chlorine bleached. A. Engler of Boncafe (Thailand) Co., Ltd. assures me that white filter papers manufactured for the Thai-Swiss gourmet coffee organization contain no dioxins because they are not chlorine bleached. Boncafe coffee filters are actually made with an ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free) whitening process; they are totally safe, help protect against LDL cholesterol, and allow the full coffee flavor to come through. I have tile popping off the walls in my bathroom, Andy. The wall behind the tiles looks crumbly. It is in the area above the toilet and underneath the window. What is going on here? How extensive is the repair job going to be? Jenson
Chrome Moan I installed new chrome faucets in my bathroom and kitchen, but they have already become dull, coated with something that I think is either lime deposits or maybe an accumulation of soap residue. Normal scrubbing doesn’t work. What does? Ben Vinegar might be your best bet, Ben. To get rid of lime deposits on a faucet, pour about half a cup of clear, white distilled vinegar into a plastic bag and tie it around the fixture. Leave it there for two or three hours, which should be enough time for the mineral deposits to dissolve. After removing the baggie, wipe the chrome clean. You may need to follow up by scrubbing with an old toothbrush. If the chrome is discolored because of soap buildup, scrub with a solution of 1 part salt to 4 parts white vinegar. A friend told me that I should use paper filters in my drip coffee maker even though it already has a basket filter. My fear is that filter papers for coffee are bleached and may seep cancer causing toxins into the coffee. What can you add to the dialogue, Andy? Katrina
If you guys don’t like noise, Pattaya may not be ideal for you. Thais seem to be unfazed by the cacophony of sounds surrounding them, yet many farang object strongly. Beyond wearing ear plugs, here are a few suggestions: To reduce external noises—but only by about 30 percent-you can apply Acousti-Coat, a latex-based paint, to walls and ceilings. It also covers surface imperfections and reduces the transfer of heat through the painted surface. There also are various types of wall coverings that absorb sound--from plain fabric wallpaper to acoustical wall coverings; most come in solid colors with ribbing or texture. Choose polyester over other materials as it has the best properties for absorbing sound vibration. As an option, you can apply cork tile squares to the wall. These are easy to install and can be wallpapered over if you need a more decorative finish. Another alternative is inexpensive foam-backed "indoor outdoor" carpet. When applied on the walls it works well to deaden sound. As for your windows, double-paned and vinyl-frame windows are the best sound barriers, but they are not inexpensive. Heavy lined drapes also work. Finally, install a solid wood door with a good seal to keep sound from coming in under the jamb. Weather-strip it well and make sure you have a tightfitting threshold or door sweep.
Noise Nightmare Our dream home in paradise has become our nightmare, Andy. Street noises blaring from oversized speakers on passing trucks, music from neighbors’ homes, emergency vehicle sirens, dogs barking, rowdy teenagers in the streets and next door—all are driving us crazy. Can you suggest any way to inexpensively soundproof our home? Kevin and Rudy
I can only imagine what "crumbly" means, Jenson. I suspect that you have water that has entered your walls from the window above. In any event, it looks like you have to repair or replace the wall section. I did this a few years ago for a similar problem (when I had a window in the shower stall). I removed all the tiles and old rotting wall and replaced a couple of wall studs that were rotting as well. After putting in new drywall, I opted for a new surround shower unit rather than tile. If you think that you can do this on your own then go for it. (I like doing that kind of work, but that is by no means an offer to do it for you.) However, there are good self-employed handy men in the Pattaya area that can do the work for you quite inexpensively. First check your window for leaks. Our Community Beach fun day at Pinnacle Jomtien Resort
by Nancy Aly-Hegazy, Special Events Chair PILC Pattaya International Ladies Club (PILC) hosted another of its special events on Saturday, June 14. This time it was at the lovely Pinnacle Resort in Jomtien and was a fun-filled day brimming with pool and beach games, prizes, good food, music and even some dancing. Thank you to all our members and friends who joined us. Though we were nervous about the cloudy conditions and rain we had that morning, the day turned out to be perfect. We had approximately 85 people attend on the day and it was great to see so many different nationalities and families from all over Pattaya. Our daytime activities centered around our young families and were held at Pinnacle’s kids pool. We were extremely fortunate to have our special friend Margaret Grainger, from Hand to Hand Foundation, help us out. Hand to Hand
brought special helpers from Play Around the World to ensure the children were entertained. The fun continued well into the evening at Pinnacle’s beachside restaurant for a BBQ buffet of steaks, sausages, salads, curries, desserts and more. After the feast, PILC drew raffle prizes and sold wine bottles with the profits going to PILC’s charities. A special thank you to Jan Bremauer, guest relation manager at Pinnacle Resort, for his kind donation to the raffle. Jan managed to secure us two vouchers, to Pinnacle’s Resorts in Jomtien and Bangkok, for the raffle. Overall, feedback from the event was very positive, with both adults and children having a great time and enjoying the event. I was asked by several children when we would do it again?! A very big thank you to Hand to Hand and Play Around the World for their generosity, hard work,
creativity and for helping to ensure the day was a great success. Big thanks to Raegan for her wonderful organization skills, Wayne for the photography and music, PILC Committee for sourcing the raffle prizes and of course to the staff at
Pinnacle Jomtien Resort and Spa for hosting the event at their wonderful hotel and restaurant. We look forward to working with you again. The PILC Christmas Bazaar this year will be held at the Holiday Inn on Sunday Nov. 23.
Pattaya Sports Club and Rotary upgrade the water supply by William Macey Situated alongside the new road out of Pattaya, the brightly-colored building just to the right of the motorway is Nongprue School, home to 950 children under the age of 10. The school opened originally as a small kindergarten, the drinking water went through a small domestic water filter which was suitable at the time for there were very few students but as the number of students increased, additional domestic filters were installed. The amount of water consumed by 950 children overwhelmed the filters; they were totally inadequate for the purpose. A big water bottle was introduced with water being siphoned through a small filter, but with many children having upset stomachs, which eventually affected the teachers, a new system had to be considered as urgent. We are all aware of the importance of clean drinking water particularly here in Thailand when the temperature is approaching 100 degrees and humidity is in the high 80s but particularly for children whose bodies are still
developing. Pattaya Sports Club and Rotary Eastern Seaboard looked at the filters and agreed with everyone that something had to be done. Within four weeks everything was agreed and a bigger, more efficient UHV filtration system was installed. An additional benefit is the availability of clean drinking water to the families of the children, generally poor, who save
a few baht by refilling a container when meeting their children at school. Students and staff alike were happy that the water problem was solved. American teacher Philip Delaney arranged a welcome for Pattaya Sports Club and Rotary to formally hand over the new filtration system to the school. During a delightful meal, children thanked those present, in English, for their contribution.

Youth Focus School’s Out for Summer! by Sandra Haeberli, Mooltripakdee International School Hello, Kids, Good News--school’s out for summer. You have had nine months of reading, writing and “rythmatic’ and now it is time to take a much needed break. Don’t you agree? Now with summer break, some of you may be flying off to exciting faraway places. Some may be going to visit grandma and grandpa, and others just be staying home and relaxing around the swimming pool. If you are planning to stay close to home and would like to have some extra things to do, I have a few suggestions to help keep you busy. 1. Spend a day on the beach. There are some very nice sandy beaches around Pattaya, Jomtien and Rayong. You could ask your parents
to take you and spend the day looking for seashells or building sand castles. You can then use your seashells to make a fun craft like sand handprints. These come out really neat and are great to display around your home. To make sand handprints you will need: one large Ziplock bag, 1 ½ cups plaster of Paris, 1 cup water, seashells (collected on the beach) one small dowel rod or sturdy stick. Please ask your parents to help you with this craft. Start by making your handprint in soft damp sand. Move your hand up and down, side to side, to make a deep print. Next arrange your seashells upside down in your handprint. Next pour the plaster of Paris into the Ziplock bag and add the water. Close the bag and shake (not too hard) until well mixed. (You can use a small bowl instead of a bag but work fast as the plaster dries quickly). Next, pour the plaster into your handprint. Put the rod or stick into your print. You will use this as a handle. Make sure it is secure. Let dry a few minutes. Now your print is ready. Pull it out of the sand. 2. Start a diary and record each day of your holiday. You can write about your day, what you did, who you saw, where you went, etc. Take your diary
with you if you travel. That way you can write as things are happening. Diaries are so much fun to read later. 3. Make things. Use recycled materials such as paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, etc. Be creative, use your imagination. An empty cereal box can become a house or a cave for a bat or the body of a robot. 4.Read. There are several book shops in Pattaya where you can find lots of good books on many subjects. There are also a couple of used book shops where you might find some interesting books too. Look through newspapers and magazines and try to find words that you
are familiar with. Write down any words you are unfamiliar with and look them up in the dictionary. It’s a great way to expand your vocabulary. 5. Invite your friends over to cook. You can make sandwiches, salads or pizza. Make banana or mango shakes with ice in a blender. Again, be creative. Then relax and enjoy. Ok, I hope I have given you a few ideas to keep busy and have fun during the summer break. Try to read and write everyday so that you don’t forget too much of what you have learned during the last school year. Have a safe and exciting summer holiday. See you soon!

You & Your Pets
Cat Corner Tip by Dr. RJ Peters to Pattaya’s cat lovers
Does Your Pet Need to Lose Weight? If you know that emotional eating can cause or contribute to weight gain in people, it should come as no surprise that it can do the same in animals. While weight-loss programs for humans seldom address the emotional aspects of stress that lead to overeating, it’s virtually unheard of for animals. However, studies are showing that similar mechanisms affect them, too. This brings up an important point: If the pleasure of eating is used as a coping strategy to minimize stress, simply reducing or restricting food intake can have disastrous consequences, whether human or animal. People may have access to counseling or other means to handle their stress, but dogs and cats do not, perhaps because many pet owners fail to recognize that animals have feelings.
If you want an overweight pet to lose weight, you cannot simply feed them less if stress is a factor in why they overeat. Removing their coping method only adds to their stress and they could become even more interested in eating, possibly leading to food guarding behaviors, or to neurotic traits, like incessant vocalizing (barking or yowling) or destructive chewing or scratching. With cats, soiling in the house could also become a problem. You must discover and repair the emotional problems before you can hope to succeed with a weight loss plan. If the coping strategy of overeating is actually that of the owner, the question to ask becomes: Is that behavior being projected onto your pet? We all want our pets to be happy, but feeding them treats too often is
not the way to do it. One weight loss technique that is especially helpful for most people is adding or increasing exercise in one’s daily routines. Fortunately, this is an excellent way to improve one’s outlook, and it works just as well for our dogs and cats. Someone once said if your dog is overweight, you’re not getting enough exercise. Certainly, walking your dog more often is beneficial to both of you. And while you can’t walk most cats, you certainly can play with them more often. Dr. Peters is the author of three informative and entertaining books about household pets. They include Our Amazing Cats, and Our Amazing Cats Vol. 2, now available from Amazon Books and at www.ouramazingcats.com. Her newest book is Our Amazing Dogs. To download ebook versions of any or all three books (about 200 baht each), go to http:// youniquesolutions. com/3Books.html. Dr. Peters also publishes a free newsletter, The Kitty Times. Cats for You in Pattaya
Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Robin
This little fellow was rescued by a couple of English lads who found him looking very sick and sorry for himself in South Pattaya. A quick trip to the vet showed a nasty bite wound on his leg and a severe cold. This photo was taken after just a few days on medicine and he is now well enough to go to a new home.
Holmes
This lovely tabby boy was dumped outside a kindly man’s house along with his 5 siblings. He took them in and asked us to try and find homes for them. Four of them now have new families but this one is still waiting for his new forever home.
Watson
This friendly tabby and white boy is brother to “Holmes” in the adjoining article. Just like the two fictional detectives they rarely go anywhere without each other. They would make a lovely pair for someone with room in their hearts and home for these two little bundles of fun.
Molly and the Kids
This lovely mamma cat was abandoned by her owners while pregnant. She recently gave birth to these 2 lovely kittens. They are in a temporary home now but we need to find her a permanent home urgently. When her babies are old enough (8 weeks) we can have them back here to re-home. Meanwhile you can have the fun of watching them grow up!
Going to the Dogs... Ever consider what our dogs must think of us? I mean, here we come back from a grocery store with the most amazing haul -- chicken, pork, half a cow. They must think we're the greatest hunters on earth! --Anne Tyler
