t has become evident that the present official campaign to stamp out visa abuse, as perceived by the authorities, is serious and likely to be sustained. It is no longer possible for foreigners to travel to the border to obtain a back-to-back 30-day visa exemption and a similar crackdown at Thai airports has already started. Basically this means that those aliens entering the country with a 30-day visa can extend their stamp for seven days at a Thai Immigration office but must then leave the country. If they wish to return quickly, they would need to obtain a 60or 90-day visa at a Thai embassy or consulate. Many foreigners attempting to live in Thailand by renewing 30-day stamps on visa runs are thought to be working illegally, i.e., without a work permit. These include teachers in private language schools which claim that the costs of obtaining the paperwork are higher and that some teachers quit anyway in a
high turnover profession. Pattaya Today spoke to four qualified English language teachers, three members of a band and two diving instructors, all of whom said they must return to their home countries. They said they would be unlikely to obtain visas at a Thai embassy abroad as they had so many visa exemption stamps and renewals at land borders. The process of acquiring a work permit is laborious and requires a non immigrant “B” visa to start the process. Employers, such as language schools, say the documentation and costs are very high. A permit, issued by the Ministry of Labour, can take up to three months to issue and the employer becomes responsible for paying income tax on the salary. The minimum, taxable monthly salary for most nationalities is 50,000 baht. A spokesman for the Chonburi Department of Employment said that some Continued on page 4

News Language schools suffering Continued from page 1 foreigners seemed to think the issuing of work permits was as routine as giving a driving license, but this was far from being the case. She added that, as regards teachers, many of them did not intend to remain in Thailand for a long time which complicated the issue. There are 40,000 schools nationwide which are obliged to teach English through native speakers and many are facing dire problems. The obvious immediate solution is to increase teacher salaries and to choose older staff who are keen to remain in Thailand. But the longer term answer may be to move to a fully professional foreign teaching force even if this means increasing student fees. Meanwhile, Immigration
and Ministry of Labour investigators are querying the system of one-year education visas for foreigners claiming to be studying the Thai language. Checks are being made to ensure that the students actually attend classes rather than simply enjoy the advantage of having a long stay visa. Most education visas are now only for a three-month stretch at a time. An allied problem, according to the Immigration Bureau, is that some foreigners trying to live in Thailand do not have sufficient funds for their stay. The current crackdown is designed to weed them out as well. Lack of funds causes some aliens to be a burden on the Thai health service. Research has
suggested that nonpaying foreigners may be costing the country 100 million baht a year. But some observers are skeptical of the campaign. They point out that many aliens requiring emergency surgery here are actually on one-year marriage or retirement visas but cannot find the extra cash needed for a heart bypass. Critics also point out that most foreign teachers would dearly love to have a work permit and that the bureaucracy needs to be simplified to help the profession and the students. Nonetheless, there is one fact on which everyone seems to be agreed: this visa crackdown, unlike those in the past, is likely to be with us for a very long time.
First Thai in outer space by Derek Franklin She’s passed all the tests, visited the launch site, received her ticket and the date has been set. All Pirada Techavijit has to do now is wait until Dec. 6 to become, not just the first Thai woman, but the first Thai ever to fly into space. Thirty-year-old Pirada has always had an interest in space, winning a place at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology to study the subject and then securing a scholarship from the THEOS Operational Training Programme in France where she studied for her master’s degree. With her extensive knowledge gained in the classroom and her interest in all matters space, it seemed only right that she was chosen to join 22 other likeminded individuals from applicants from 62 countries, on a trip of a lifetime. The scheduled flight of a Lynx Mark II will leave terra firma in the United States and take just four minutes to reach 100 km, or 328,000 feet, above the earth. Then the craft will re-enter the atmosphere and glide back to earth. A ride in the Lynx would normally cost US$3.2 million (about 100 million baht), but fortunately for Pirada, a sponsor is covering the cost. On a rare day-off from her work, Pirada recently came to Pattaya to give a lecture to almost 900 students from local schools,
colleges and organizations such as the Father Ray Foundation, which organized the event at Tiffany’s Theatre. It is not often that so many school children can all sit in silence at the same time. But as they listened to the adventures of one Thai female, they were totally absorbed. They listened to the training regime she went through in the US to be selected, and they also listened to her advice that hard work will get you to where you want to go. This is a young lady, who, like all children, had a dream as a young girl and whose dream is now becoming a reality. What better role model could the children of Pattaya have?

In Thailand, BMW Motorrad delivered more motorcycles in the first half of 2014 than
the entire year delivery in 2011. Despite of the headwinds in the market during the first half of 2014, 218 motorcycles were handed over to proud owners of BMW Motorrad nationwide. “It’s going to be another record-setting year for BMW Motorrad Thailand. CoAssets reaches S$1million revenue mark CoAssets (www.CoAssets.com), a real estate crowdfunding site, crossed the S$1million revenue mark within their first year of operation. “CoAssets was officially launched in July 2013 and as of early August 2014, our revenue has exceeded S$1million,” reported company CEO Getty Goh. “This figure is a combination of collected income as well as MOUs signed with the various developers, who will be using our crowdfunding services in the coming months. “Profit wise, we are within the healthy range of between 10 percent and 20 percent. So the results are very encouraging, as it validates our belief that there is a strong demand for
crowdfunding services in the real estate sector.” “While we are a real estate crowdfunding site, our business model is very different from similar sites in places like the United States and Europe,” Goh continued. “Specifically, we do not get directly involved in the deals and we do not collect monies from the funders. We are purely a market place and any arrangement is between the opportunity providers (i.e. developers) and the funders. Akin to what eBay is doing for the auction market, by being a market place for users who want to auction their products, CoAssets is a market place for developers and/or property owners who are interested to get their projects crowdfunded.”

ACQUA WINE DINNER
Collavini Wines and Creative Cuisine
Acqua is one of the coterie of restaurants at the extraordinary Centara Grand Mirage Beach Resort situated on the northern Pattaya shoreline of Wong Amat Beach. The force behind this up-market contemporary Italian restaurant is a well-known culinary celebrity, Alberto Bruni. Hailing from the Liguria region of Italy he has gained an enviable reputation, not only for his exquisite cuisine but also for his culinary passion for sourcing the finest ingredients from Italy’s wealth of gastronomic produce. The evening was hosted by the famous Collavini winery from Udine in the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia situated in the northeastern area between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps. It is a family owned company managed by Manlio Collavini and his sons Giovanni, Luigi and Eugenio. In fact it was Luigi who genially hosted our evening introducing us to the lavishness of these superb wines served in conjunction with the fastidious food pairing of Chef Alberto’s 7-course extravaganza. The restaurant is situated off the main lobby and the eponymous “water” theme is exploited throughout the remarkable décor. Undulating wooden mobiles and fibrous sculptures represent the theme with imaginary wooden coral and artistic embellishments. It was here that we gathered recently to enjoy a glass of Collavini’s Royal Spumante Rosato Brut and to savor a
selection of cold cuts including the distinguished Sauris cured ham. The pre-aperitivo was a cold Pachino tomato juice with a brunoise of summer vegetables, Burrata mousse and basil pesto. These treasured tomatoes from the Sicilian province of Siracusa, combined with finely diced vegetables, crowned with the sweetness of the creamed mozzarella and topped with a soupcon of basil pesto was a sheer delight. The accompanying wine was a Pinot Grigio Canlungo which ideally suited this summer soup with its soft, smooth characteristics yet with a distinctly powerful staying quality. The next course produced a duo of fine tuna preparations. Broiled carpaccio and a tartar of the superior Akame tuna accompanied by a mango and salmon caviar. We just loved this plate of the finest tuna made even more delicious with the accompaniment of the next wine of the evening, a Blanc Fumat Sauvignon Collio. This wine with its dry, clean elegance immediately made best friends with the taste and texture of the tuna. Seared giant Japanese scallops served on a bed of fresh Roman artichokes with a sundried tomato tapenade provided the “pre-main” course. Two soft pillowy mollusks caramelized to exactness accompanied by heritage
artichokes, surely life can’t get any better than this! Enjoyed with one of Collavini’s flagship wines a Broy Collio – it was a superb coupling. Sporting a lustrous straw color with a powerful, yet soft, textured balance it certainly was to be included in the top billing of the pageant of wines we enjoyed at this wine dinner. Roasted guinea fowl was the next surprise to hit the table. Wrapped in Parma ham and filled with spinach and cream of porcini mushrooms it was a sensation. This ham is surely one of the world’s finest gourmet treats and served to embellish the subtle gaminess of the fowl it was a star dish. Married with a MoRe (Merlot/Refosco) with its fresh berry mix and dry tannins it exceeded our expectations. The choice of wines from Collavini’s cellar combined with the expertise of Chef Alberto’s kitchen was proving to be a dolce vita of an evening and yet more was to come. The cheese course approached. The olfactory satisfaction when these plates were wafted before us was supreme. I have to admit that by now my notes are getting pretty illegible and the only cheese name that I can decipher this morning is the Taleggio! Suffice to say they were all served at the perfect temperature and were a memorable (sic!) quartet of cheese triumphs accompanied by honeyed walnuts and fresh fruits. Savored with the pouring of a Merlot dal Pic with its fruit-led weave on the palate and velvety tannins we were replete. It was now time for dessert that had lovingly been prepared to put the gastro-arrivederci on the evening. The dolce momento was a decadent two-flavored pastry languishing in a puddle of the most luscious chocolate sauce we have eaten for quite some time. Enjoyed with more of the Merlot dal Pic (nothing makes better friends with chocolate than red wine) it flawlessly
brought down the curtain on this bella of a wine dinner. Congratulations to all concerned the staff were exemplary in their standard of service and the wines from the house of Collavini a joy. Chef Alberto has carved out a special niche for Acqua. He choreographs the restaurant with professionalism and style and his signature dishes dazzle with contemporary chefery. The abundance of impeccablysourced luxury ingredients contributes to place this stylish restaurant firmly in Pattaya’s upper culinary circle.

Moonlight Restaurant A Smooth Mood and Exquisite Food Moonlight Restaurant was an enthusiastic recommendation from a friend. It is undeniably tucked away and has absolutely no passing trade so unless you make a determined effort you will never know it is there. We urge you to make that effort. Its surprising location is at the end of a long undistinguished corridor in View Talay 7. Enter through the main entrance and keep walking. There at the very end of the corridor on the left side are two doors. Walk through and we guarantee you will be astonished at the visual drama that awaits. Moonlight is a bijou (only 35 covers), chic, little restaurant dressed in red, brown and gold with a classic motif adorning the walls and ceiling. The décor conveys luxury with a touch of theatrics Baroque-style. Compact this restaurant may be but that does not stop its chef from packing a big flavor punch. Chef Gig heads the restaurant team, Art, the manager, meets and greets with charm and confidence while Anny, the bar manager, seamlessly steers the bibulous side of things. Terrace seating is available
for about 16 people, plus there is a curtained private room for clandestine dining and a main restaurant area for another 15 or so which backs on to a wall of wine and bar area. The ambiance is refined and opulent affording privileged views out over the swimming pool and inky black ocean beyond. The menu is decidedly set in the contemporary fine dining quarter of gastronomy. Starters such as soft shell crab salad, sesame crusted seared tuna salad or crispy shrimp salad with roe mayo, mixed lettuce and fruits are B.350 ++. Together with seared foie gras and fruit compote and Fine de Claire oysters it is an impressive opening read. We were sipping a very acceptable Chilean house Chardonnay (B.150 by the glass) as we nibbled on a hot, crunchy roll accompanied by French butter and a moreish vegetable/mayo mix while surfing the menu. For starters we ordered the seared Japanese sea scallops with caviar and the soft shell crab salad. They are both equally as good; the scallops receiving just the correct amount of caramelization
MIXOLOG
topped with a daub of black caviar, reclining on a puddle of sautéed champignon and white wine cream sauce. The soft shell crab salad was a crisp, scrumptious dish. Chef’s penchant for adding a fruity touch was again illustrated with servings of finely julienned green apple, dragon fruit, fresh strawberry and kiwi fruit. It was a light, crunchy bowl of originality. Imported grain-fed premium Australian steaks are a specialty here. The legendary “Tomahawk” tops the list and for carnivores who could handle such a colossal cut it comes in at 600 g for two people (B.1590++). Tenderloin is a daintier weight at 150 g for B.890 ++, while the beef rib eye and beef strip loin will put 250 grams of prime beef on your plate. Another beefy treat is Chef’s slow braised short ribs. Described by many as one of life’s great pleasures they are soft meaty sticks of deeply flavored beef ribs served with truffle mashed potato, baby carrot, broccoli, cauliflower, and fruit gravy.
Back to our choices of main dishes: the Australian lamb chops for Mick and after a short tussle between the slow roasted duck breast with foie gras and bigarade sauce (a classic sour orange sauce) or pan roasted sea bass with soft polenta the fish won (B.390 ++). The tipple to accompany Mick’s lamb chops was a robust Chilean Merlot which paired well with the brilliant piece of meat, seductively charred and glazed and treated with care and finesse. The perfect brittleness of the fishy skin was spot on revealing beneath the milky white flesh which married so well with the sautéed vegetables, sun-dried tomatoes, roasted garlic, lemon and herbs. Items from the grill are served without vegetables and require an order of additional “extras”, perhaps something that management could consider readdressing. Signature pasta dishes are classic but with a contemporary twist of luxury overload. For instance although there is the classic beef lasagna there is also a fish lasagna made with a selection of seafood and Alaskan king crab, or a spaghetti with lobster, shrimp roe, garlic, chili, basil and olive oil or a black ink fettuccine with mussels, shrimp, squid and basil. Traditionalists do not fear your choice of pasta can also be served with a bolognese, tomato, carbonara or pesto sauce. Four

timeless Thai dishes complete the menu before segueing into desserts. It was now time to turn our minds to something sweet to complete the Moonlight experience. There is a Tartufo savant in this kitchen. Tartufo is an Italian ice cream dessert with a frozen fruit filling and has the denizens of Calabria, where it was created, crying in their stradas for the joy of them. Four choices are offered, with pistachio, coffee caviar or almond praline but how could we not choose the Tartufo Al Pistacchio with brie cheese (yes!), blueberry sauce and mixed fresh berries. The alliance of the French creamy cheese was inspirational and the Italian ice a delight. This seductively swish new restaurant serves fine dining in an ambiance of luxe splendor. On the night we dined at Moonlight it produced a succession of triumphant dishes, beautifully cooked, perfectly seasoned, imaginatively presented and lovingly served. Who could ask for more? Do make the effort and discover for yourself the gastronomic delights that await at the end of that long corridor in View Talay 7. Holiday Inn Pattaya opens Executive Tower Especially striking are the new MICE facilities, called The Workshop. The innovative industrial setting contains state-of-the-art technologies and facilities needed for imagination-firing in the commercial sense. The space includes Pattaya’s first auditorium facility within a hotel, a 115-sqm theaterstyle venue for up to 75 people. Three meeting rooms, enhanced by natural daylight, can be modified to meet seminar requirements. “We wanted to create a new, creative meeting space which reflected this industrial concept,” said Kate Gerits, Holiday Inn Pattaya general manager. The materials used include polished concrete walls and floors, particle board features, giant corrugated metal sheet walls and contemporary steel furniture. The breakout area is The Workshop which represents the functional purpose of the space and encourages a casual, team-building approach to working in groups. Thus a circular, stepped auditorium that allows for various setups. The rooftop area includes the Executive Club which has an unrestricted view of the sea, sky and horizon. Cool tones of blue and green are effective in showing the color scheme flowing inside to outside. Synthetic rattan furniture helps create a resort-like atmosphere, while the patterns on the decorative screens mimic the undulating waves of the sea. The terrace is dominated by a steel tree sculpture that represents the rooftop garden concept. Simple lounge chairs and beds encourage a relaxed atmosphere, while fabrics add a light touch, emphasizing the sea concept. Opening of the Executive Tower places Holiday Inn at the forefront of both the tourist and MICE markets in the upscale hotels of the resort. Pattaya has changed a great deal in the last 10 years and has grown more sophisticated as it has diversified its attractions towards business people, families and high-end tourism. Pattaya, in fact, is quickly becoming the equal of Bangkok in terms of cosmopolitan facilities for the discerning 21st century traveler.

Grousing Brits A survey from Thomas Cook and the Association of British Travel Agents revealed these actual gripes expressed to Thomas Cook Vacations from dissatisfied UK customers (note that Pattaya is not mentioned even once). 1. “I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local convenience store does not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts.” 2. “It’s lazy of the local shopkeepers in Puerto Vallarta to close in the afternoons. I often needed to buy things during ‘siesta’ time — this should be banned.” 3. “On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don’t like spicy food.” 4. “We booked an excursion to a water park but no-one told us we had to bring our own swimsuits and towels. We assumed it would be included in the price” 5. “The beach was too sandy. We had to clean everything when we returned to our room.” 6. “We found the sand was not like the sand in the brochure. Your brochure shows the sand as white but it was more yellow.” 7. “They should not allow topless sunbathing on the beach. It was very distracting for my husband who just wanted to relax.” 8. “No-one told us there would be fish in the water. The children were scared.” 9. “Although the brochure said that there was a fully equipped kitchen, there was no egg-slicer in the drawers.” 10. “We went on holiday to Spain and had a problem with the taxi drivers as they were all Spanish.” 11. “The roads were uneven and bumpy, so we could not read the local guide book during the bus ride to the resort. Because of this, we were unaware of many things that would have made our holiday more fun.” 12. “It took us nine hours to fly home from Jamaica to England. It took the Americans only three hours to get home. This seems unfair.” 13. “I compared the size of our one-bedroom suite to our friends’ three-bedroom and ours was significantly smaller.”

14. “The brochure stated: ‘No hairdressers at the resort’. We’re trainee hairdressers and we think they knew and made us wait longer for service.” 15. “There were too many Spanish people there. The receptionist spoke Spanish, the food was Spanish. No one told us that there would be so many foreigners.” 16. “We had to line up outside to catch the boat and there was no air-conditioning.” 17. “It is your duty as a tour operator to advise us of noisy or unruly guests before we travel.” 18. “I was bitten by a mosquito. The brochure did not mention mosquitoes.” 19. “My fiancé and I requested twin-beds when we booked, but instead we were placed in a room with a king bed. We now hold you responsible and want to be re-reimbursed for the fact that I became pregnant. This would not have happened if you had put us in the room that we booked.” 20. “We bought Ray-Ban sunglasses for five euros from a street trader, only to find out they were fake.” 21. “While staying at the game lodge overlooking a water hole, we spotted a visibly aroused elephant. The sight of the animal ruined my honeymoon by making me feel inadequate.”

Worry lines are real. Very real. They are furrows on your forehead or brow—between your eyes. However, while they are called worry lines, they are not necessarily caused by worry. Genes play some role, as does aging. But recognize that if you have lots to worry about day after day, it no doubt takes a toll on your diet, exercise, sleep, stress levels—all of which affects your appearance, not to mention your attitude. And if you are constantly frowning, grimacing or scowling, those facial expressions will induce lines and, ultimately, creases in the skin. Nervous tension is just one of many routes to worry lines which are just one of the facial wrinkles many of us dread…and most of us live with. But you don’t have to. You can visit a skin clinic or a dermatologist for advice or consultation on Botox, dermabrasion, plastic surgery, or any one of a number of treatments to erase those premature lines on your face. Before doing that however, here are a few suggestions that may alleviate some causes of wrinkles or even help eradicate a few lines. Do you sleep on your back? Sleeping in certain positions every night may lead to “sleep lines.” And those lines that can become etched into the top layers of skin do not disappear when you rise out of bed in the morning. For example, sleeping on your side causes wrinkles on cheeks and chin; sleeping face down create a furrowed brow. Avoid such sleep-induced wrinkles by sleeping on your back.

How’s your diet? There’s a direct correlation between what you eat and how you look. Protein is the most important nutrient because it helps build blocks of great skin. And one of the best sources of protein is cold-water fish, such as salmon. Salmon and other fatty fish deliver not only protein but also omega-3 fatty acids which nourish skin and keep it plump and youthful, thereby minimizing wrinkles. Read much? No, learning doesn’t reduce wrinkles, but squinting contributes to overworking facial muscles—and that creates lines and wrinkles around the eyes. So wear reading glasses if you need them. For that same reason, wear sunglasses to discourage squinting
in the bright sun—and to protect your eyes and skin from damaging UV rays. How do you treat your skin? Maybe it’s time you started treating it with Alpha-hydroxy Acids (AHAs), natural acids that lift away the top layer of dead skin cells, reducing the appearance of pores, fine lines and surface wrinkles, especially around the eyes. And stronger forms of AHAs may help boost collagen production. But be mindful that AHAs can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so pour on the sun screen every day.
On that same topic, studies have found that skin creams with vitamin C can raise collagen production, protect against damage from UVA and UVB rays, help reduce dark spots and uneven skin tone, and reduce redness. What kind of vitamin C? The best to combat wrinkles may be L-ascorbic acid. Wash much? Stop. That’s right, stop washing your face. Tap water can strip your skin of moisture and natural oils that protect against wrinkles. So instead of washing your face with water and soap, use a facial skin cleanser or a gel. Drink much? Switch to cocoa. At least one study found that cocoa with high levels of two antioxidants (epicatechin and catechin) protects skin from sun damage, improves blood flow to skin cells, helps hydration, and makes the skin look and feel smoother. Also, adhere to basic skin care truths. Stay out of the sun and, if you must venture out, wear sunscreen and protective clothing. Do not smoke. Use moisturizer, and drink plenty of water.

Treating Acne in Adult Men Acne affects both sexes equally, but men tend to have longer lasting acne than women because of the higher levels of testosterone within the body. Acne in adult men usually starts in their teens and stays with them into adulthood. While acne strikes adult women at a greater rate than men, they are not immune to it. The good news is acne can be treated successfully, even in adults. But why is it important to know what by Dr. Natnicha Loichuen causes acne? Because it will help you treat it right, and get better results from your treatments. Acne results from the disorder of the hair follicle. Excess oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria become trapped within the follicle, creating clogged pores. If the follicle wall ruptures, inflammation occurs and a pimple is created. Most men will experience acne in four different areas with the greatest abundance of sebaceous glands: Face, Chest, Back and Buttocks. A. FACE The sebaceous glands are microscopic glands in the skin that secrete an oily matter called sebum. They are found in greatest abundance on the face. Oily face then makes the skin clogged with bacteria. B. “BACKNE” Acne on the back, or “backne”, is basically caused by the same things that cause acne on the rest of your body. Your body over produces sebum and mixes with dead skin cells and other things on our skin like dirt, oils, bacteria causing a break out. The pores and follicles can become clogged with dirt, lotions, soaps and even the remnants of dead skin cells. If a male does not wash his back properly, then these contaminants aren’t removed from the pores and follicles, thus acne results. Exercise and sports increases the amount of sweat and oil produced by the skin, and sometimes this sweat and oil is not washed right away before it gets clogged in a pore or follicle. The sweat and oil trapped in the pore or follicle create an acne bump. This can be avoided by using a towel frequently to wipe off excess sweat and oil.
C. CHEST Chest acne develops in the same way as regular acne does. Use an antibacterial soap that is especially formulated to treat acne. You might have to repeat the process depending on the product’s or your doctor’s recommendation. However, you also need to make sure that you do not aggravate and cause acne scars by intensely rubbing your body to remove acne. Vigorously rubbing the infected areas will not only cause scarring but will also result in the spread of acne to different areas of the body. D. BUTTOCKS Acne is associated with increased androgen levels and bad personal hygiene. This is especially true for acne on the buttocks. Sweat and dirt can build up between the underwear and the skin, leading to blocked pores. There are several things you can do to prevent or reduce acne breakouts on the buttocks. Exfoliating the skin while taking showers keeps the pores from becoming blocked. Wearing loose-fitting cotton underwear reduces sweating. CONTROL AND TREATMENT Controlling acne relies on a two-pronged approach: proper treatment medications and a consistent daily skin care routine. • Wash your face every morning and at night before going to bed. Use a mild foaming cleanser or acne soap to wash away excess oil. But cleansing too often or scrubbing too hard can irritate the skin. • Don’t squeeze spots. This can make them worse and cause permanent scarring. • Getting enough sleep is the best remedy for healing naturally. It is during this time that your body will replenish itself, getting rid of bad cells and will make new healthy cells. Quality sleep is the door that will lead you to less inflammatory processes, hormone balance and less stress, which will greatly improve the condition of your skin. • Keep your bed with fresh linens. Change sheets and pillow cases often to help avoid clogging your pores with dead skin cells and oil absorbed by the fabric.
• Acne on the body can be irritated by sweat, so make sure you shower right after a workout. Anything that traps heat against the skin, or causes friction, can also worsen breakouts. This includes sports equipment, backpacks, purse and bra straps, and tight clothing. Try to limit these triggers as much as you can. • A consultation with a dermatologist will help you find a treatment that will clear up your skin. The sooner you make that appointment, the sooner you will start seeing results.

Accounting and Financial Reports What is a financial statement? A financial statement is a formal record of the financial activities of a business, person, or other entity presenting the results of operations and the financial position of the company. Who shall have the duty to keep accounts? A registered partnership, public limited company, or limited company established under a Thai law, a juristic person established under a foreign law engaging in a business in Thailand, and a joint venture under the Revenue Code shall have the duty to keep accounts, and must provide the bookkeeping for its business operations in accordance with the details, rules and procedures prescribed under the Accounting Act, B.E. 2543 (2000). Failure to provide bookkeeping or comply with the regulations shall be liable to penalty. All companies in Thailand need to prepare and comply with the following: -Monthly financial reports (balance sheet, profit and loss statement) -Withholding corporate income tax return (PND 3, 53) -Withholding income tax remittance return (PND 54) -Half-year corporate income tax return (PND 51) -Value added tax return (PP 30) -Annual corporate income tax return (PND 50) -Annual financial statement -Accounting transactions record What is a balance sheet? A balance sheet is a financial statement that summarizes a company’s assets, liabilities and shareholders’ equity at a specific point in time. It’s called a balance sheet because the two sides balance out. A company has to pay for all the things it has (assets) by either borrowing money (liabilities) or getting it from shareholders (shareholders’ equity). These three balance sheet segments give investors
an idea as to what the company owns and owes, as well as the amount invested by the shareholders. Why do we need a balance sheet? This report can be used to obtain a complete picture of the financial results and financial position of a business on the last date of the financial year. A balance sheet records the arrangement of money in a business and it shows the accounting value of all the company’s assets, liabilities and equity at one moment in time, which may lead to conclusions regarding the liquidity of the entity. Balance sheet data can be used to compute key indicators that reveal the company’s ability to meet its obligations. When must a balance sheet be made and submitted? The submission of financial statements shall be in accordance with the rules and procedures prescribed by the Directors-General of the Revenue Department and the Department of Business Development. A balance sheet must be made at least once every 12 months. Such 12-month period constitutes the company’s accounting period or financial year. A newly established company should close accounts within 12 months from its registration. This must be certified by a qualified external auditor and must be filed with the Revenue Department and Department of Business Development every year. The balance sheet must be examined by one or more auditors and submitted for adoption to a general meeting within four months after its date. A copy of it must be sent to every person entered in the register of shareholders at least three days before the general meeting. Copies must also be kept open at the offices of the company during the same period for inspection by the shareholders. Where the accounts or the documents relevant thereto are lost or damaged, the person having the duty to keep accounts shall notify the Chief Accounts Inspector or the Accounts Inspector of the loss or damage, in accordance with the rules and procedures prescribed by the Director-General, within 15 days from the date of knowledge thereof, or the date such loss or damage ought to have been known. What happens upon failure to submit the audited financial statement on time? The company’s annual financial statement must be filed, along with its annual income tax return, with the Revenue Department and Department of Business Development, within 150 days after the end of its accounting period. If a company fails to submit its audited financial statement within the required time then the company is liable to a certain penalty or fine which may also be applicable to its responsible officer. Can a company change its year-cycle of account? If a company wishes to change its accounting period, it must obtain written approval from the Chief Accounts Inspector of the Revenue Department by submitting Form SorBorChor 4 together with other documents specified in the mentioned form.

In fund managers' ongoing attempts to cherry-pick sectors that will offer consistent, worthwhile returns to investors over the recent turbulent years, funds have been set up to specifically avoid the machinations of the world stock markets, in arenas that enjoy a very strong demand curve, despite the economic conditions. Although stock markets have rallied in recent months, the fact is that only very recently have they surpassed 2007 levels. Simply put, had your money been linked to the main indices all that time, only now would you have got your original investment back, plus a little extra, with nothing there for inflation. Seven years is a long time to wait for your holdings to claw back their original paper value. One of the interesting sectors that has been attracting attention is the holiday leisure park market. Apart from the fact that it’s on a growth path, a significant number of UK local authority pension funds have invested in such funds, along with many big UK corporate household names. Consequently, we have looked into this area in depth. In the volatile financial world we all now find ourselves, it is not often we’ve been able to identify a particular fund that has demonstrated the business acumen required to deliver good investment performance throughout the turbulence. The UK leisure park business is currently a 3 billion GBP per annum business. The purchase/rental of prime sites and significantly upgrading the facilities is one part of the equation. Sites are being upgraded with modern, fixed units and amenities, resulting in both increased capital values and higher income streams. The institutional funding has allowed their operation to put in place an impressive development and acquisition schedule over the coming years, which is likely to ensure continuing performance, in excess of the stated target returns of 8-12 percent. Keep in mind, there is no correlation between this fund’s strong performance and the stock markets. Once again, we see the scenario that has proved so successful in recent times; a dominant position in a specific sector that’s enjoying very strong demand, with continually rising turnover/income, away from the vagaries of the markets. As with all property linked funds, there is always the question of liquidity. The holding of real assets, by its very nature, means they cannot be disposed of overnight. Nonetheless, the liquidity level maintained in this fund is above the industry norm, while still providing a very worthwhile return. Despite the lingering malaise in some of the developed economies, there is this ‘bull’ period in the leisure holiday park market which is generating substantial profits. Nonetheless, it will not carry on at this level indefinitely. The industry experts forecast a 10-year window in which the UK’s domestic leisure parks will be brought up to world-class standards. In the meantime, there could well be an opportunity to reap rewards from this increasingly successful business. Again--and as you can see--we have a great line up of the best properties from all over Thailand. It’s going to be one of our greatest Thailand Property Awards events to date. I want to stress how pleased we all are to see our Eastern Seaboard’s Silverlake Vineyards and Winery make the finalist list for Thailand’s Best Landscape Architectural Design, which already qualifies them for an award (TPA 2014 Highly Commended at least!) Silverlake’s competitor, the Tuscana Valley Company Ltd., is an incredible Khaow Yai project and development which last year won a couple of awards including Best Residential Development Khaow Yai and Thailand’s Best Landscape Architectural Design. Obviously it’s a strong competitor for the Silverlake Vineyards and Winery. Let’s all join together at the Gala Dinner’s Eastern Seaboard table and show our support for our own Silverlake Vineyards and Winery. Tickets for the annual event, inclusive of cocktail networking reception, fourcourse dinner, wine, beer and all soft drinks throughout the evening, may be booked at info@asiapropertyawards.com. (Bangkok Post, Thailand Property Report, Tropical Homes Magazine, Real Estate Magazine Thailand, Big Chilli Magazine, Tattler Magazine, Homes and Condos Magazine, and others). Furthermore, the American-born entrepreneur is recognized for his many accomplishments in promoting real estate on the Eastern Seaboard, including having been a guest speaker with several of Thailand’s top political and business figures on CNBC’s Managing Asia. Premier Homes is Pattaya’s leader in exclusive property sales and rentals, which may be seen by visiting their website at: www.premierinternational.com. Business success all the way with Allan Ottesen
by Barry Kenyon
What makes a successful businessman? Pattaya Today went along to talk to Allan Ottesen, one of the resort’s best-known, successful “luk khrueng” as he has a Thai mother and a Danish father. In fact the Ottesen family have been involved in the luxury property and hospitality business in Thailand since the early 1970s, initially in Bangkok and later in the Pattaya area.
a
llan’s father and stepmother, Ib and Kannikar Ottesen, were early pioneers of low-rise condominium projects and serviced apartments in Pattaya. “When my father first went into business here, hotel rooms were practically the only available option, and serviced apartments virtually unheard of,” says Allan. Ib and Kannikar are semi-retired now, so Allan is the head of the portfolio of business interests which include Jomtien Boathouse (hotel, pub, wine and grill), The Residence Garden (boutique-style hotel suites with the famous Captain’s Corner steakhouse) and the Jomtien Beach Residence and Jomtien Beach Penthouses near the beachfront. While still a young boy of eight, Allan left Thailand to live in Denmark as he was missing his mother (Allan is a product of a broken home). Already fluent in English and Thai, he then quickly picked up Danish as a third language. By the age of 15, Allan was sure he wanted a professional business career and diligently studied economics and marketing in both Denmark and Australia. After completing a year’s national service in Denmark, Allan returned to Thailand and Pattaya in 2005 to work as a restaurant manager for his father. “I learned so much from my father, particularly about customer care and giving personal attention to people who are spending their hard-earned cash with you,” he says. Although Allan has younger siblings here in Thailand, to whom he relates well, he is clearly a workaholic and manages all the family businesses in an efficient and extremely cheery fashion. “At present,” he explains, “I’m the only family member present in Thailand, so it’s clearly my mission to have a large portfolio of responsibilities.” Allan himself puts his success down to the training given by his father and to simple luck. “I was in the right place at the right
Jomtien Beach Residence time,” he asserts, “and Jomtien has boomed in the last dozen years which nobody predicted at the time.” But this is surely too easy an explanation. There are indeed other factors at work. Being a fluent linguist certainly helps. Allan can converse with ease in three languages which is a skill not shared by many business executives in our fair city. Also, of course, he is a Thai national by birth which also helps and enables him to communicate well with customers and the wider business networks in the city. The family businesses are based in the Jomtien area which is predicted to have the best growth prospects in the whole greater

GM Outlook I follow my father who recognized the importance of customer care when people are spending their hardearned cash with you. Allan with Ib and Kannikar at the grand opening of Jomtien Beach Penthouses as Had Dongtan, after the sugar palms that grow in the area, Jomtien is famous for its seafood restaurants and shopping as well as the many trendy hotels ideal for a getaway weekend or a longer vacation. Jomtien has developed its own identity and is far less frenetic than downtown Pattaya.
Jomtien Beach Penthouses Pattaya area. Jomtien Beach Residence and Jomtien Beach Penthouses are situated on Soi 9 along Jomtien Beach, close to the sea, and providing tropical paradise living in units of various sizes. Jomtien Boathouse also has a prime position on the beachfront road, while The
Residence Garden and the Captain’s Corner steakhouse are located on Thappraya Road. Jomtien Beach in particular, located just four kilometres south from Pattaya town center, attracts many visitors because of its clean, golden sands stretching for over six kilometers. Formerly known
If luck has played any part in the Ottesen success story, it is that the family chose to concentrate its business developments in the potentially most popular area of the booming eastern seaboard resort. The rest is down to effective management strategies.

Tips & Advice
What Our
Readers Say
More farang police
(Joseph Lamont writes) Thanks for explaining what’s going on in the local tourist police (front page Pattaya Today August 1). But I now see on South Road some foreigners dressed up in brown uniforms and helmets – identical to police except that they don’t have rank insignia or guns. They appear to be directing traffic and clamping vehicles which are illegally parked. What is this about? Ed: The traffic division of Pattaya city police are trying this as an experiment to help out Thai officers. The foreigners are still volunteers (with various languages which can be useful) and are not paid. The whole business of foreign volunteers in the local police has become complicated. There are separate groups working for city police, tourist police, traffic police, City Hall, etc. Each group has a different uniform.
Original passport or not
(Carol Lindsay writes) I am very confused by contradictory information on the social media. Firstly we are told we must carry our passports in Thailand at all times for ID purposes, then we are told that a photocopy, a laminated copy or a Thai driving license will suffice. Then the advice changes again according to which police officer is giving the answers. Ed: The definitive answer was given recently by the immigration command in Bangkok. An original passport, a photocopy of the ID page and your visa, a laminated copy or a Thai driving license are all acceptable. If the police are suspicious or believe
you have committed a crime, they can always require you to fetch your original passport.
Deathly procedure
(Henry Corbett writes) I am a UK citizen and am very ill here in Thailand. I want to know what my Thai wife must do when I die, particularly concerning the embassy and the immigration bureau. I have no property here or in UK and my Thai bank account is in joint names with my wife. Ed: The whole matter is not complicated as farang deaths happen every day. You are likely to die in hospital or at home and your wife or the hospital must inform the British embassy. She also needs to obtain a death certificate from the local authority. The embassy will give to your wife a “letter of release” which allows her to move the body to a temple for cremation. The embassy has a list of undertakers, if needed, and they can also arrange transportation of the remains to UK if appropriate and provided somebody pays. There is no actual requirement to inform immigration but it is a courtesy to do so. Your wife needs your passport and the death certificate.
Supermarket rules
(Liverpool Hughie writes) Why do some supermarkets sell booze on a 24-hour basis and others only at specified times? Ed: The ruling about specified times dates back to a military decree of the 1970s which has not been rescinded but doesn’t seem to be enforced a lot. Best speak to your supermarket about this sensitive subject! A: The office is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday except public holidays. In my opinion it’s best to arrive there around 7:30 a.m. and join the cluster of people hanging around the entrance. The office is usually opened to the public at 8:15 a.m.
RENEWING YOUR DRIVER’S LICENSE Q: I have a one-year provisional driving license and I will be applying for my first five-year one next month. What documents do I need to take? A: Letter from immigration (confirming your address), letter from a hospital or clinic indicating you are free of certain diseases, the provisional license and a photocopy thereof (front and back), your passport and copies of the ID page, the current visa and the white card TM6. Q: I have heard that after so long foreigners may apply for a lifetime driving license. How can I do this? A: You can’t I’m afraid. There was a window of opportunity some years ago, but the licensing office no longer gives them. It’s five years and repeat! Q: I have heard that the Banglamung licensing office is often very crowded. What is the best time to go and are there any facilities at weekends to renew your driving license?
Q: What practical tests do I have to perform to obtain the renewal of my five-year license? A: Currently, there is an eyesight test (giving the color of different-sized circles on a chart), an emergency stop procedure and a depth-of-field test, that is, you have to press a button when a moving stick is parallel with a stationary one. All these tests are performed inside the office. If you fail any task two times, you will be asked to return the following day. If you fail yet again, it’s curtains for a year. Q: I have heard that while you wait for your license to be processed, you must watch an hour-long video in Thai (with English subtitles). Is this so? A: Sometimes. The “screening” room has seats while the main hall may be standing room only. Be patient. This is Thailand! Q: What happens if I lose my license or change my passport? A: Lost licenses require a police report which you must take to the licensing office with your current passport and, hopefully, a copy of the lost license. Your passport number appears on your license, so technically you need to obtain a new license if you have a new one.
Snap Judgment Farang Perspectives It’s a fair bet that, generally speaking, expats in Thailand think that General Prayuth has brought about many improvements in the country following the coup of May 22. Most foreigners here may not be too well acquainted with the details of Thai politics, but they can see that public disorder and street riots have stopped, the economy is on the mend and efforts are being made to stop corruption. Efforts to clamp down on taxi and motorbike mafias also have been well received. Indeed, some correspondents to the press and in the social media are arguing that we should leave matters where they are – military rule and martial law. Back in the late 1950s and early 1960s there was such a rule under Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat, a strongman who wielded absolute power until his death in 1963. The obvious question in 2014 is whether Thailand is still suitable for despotic paternalism. The answer is a resounding no. The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) and General Prayuth have made it clear that they intend to return the country to normal politics and general elections after a reform period which will last about a year. Nobody underestimates the difficulty of the tasks ahead but they have to be undertaken. Thailand, admittedly a flawed democracy, has to move forward and not backwards. There are several reasons why the despotic rule of 50-odd years ago could not be reinstituted today on an ongoing basis. The outlook of Thais has changed and there is more opposition to dictatorship than in the past. For example, Sarit was able to control the media, but that is hardly possible today in the complex world of social media which is ever expanding. Today people are more interested in giving their own opinions than obeying instructions from on high. Moreover, Sarit had the excuse of the threat of communism to justify his iron rule. It was popularly supposed in the early 1960s that Marxism could well overthrow several regimes in Southeast Asia under the so-called domino theory, namely that once communism was established in one country, the rest would quickly fall. We know today that this idea proved to be a gross oversimplification, but it was received wisdom at the time. Today, the economic and political context of Southeast Asia is much more promising, with the 10-nation ASEAN Economic Community beginning implementation in less than 18 months. As the NCPO clearly recognizes, Thais have become used to open and messy politics for many years and have their own ideas about concepts such as progress, democracy and even happiness. Nobody today would accept the execution of political opponents or the mass arrest of academics as happened under Sarit. As Professor Thak Chaloemtiarana has written, “The Thai genie has been let out of the bottle and it would be hard to get it back inside.” Nowadays the rural and lower classes in Thailand have grown richer and better educated and are demanding their share of wealth and influence. So the challenges in the “year of reform” which lies ahead are formidable. But General Prayuth has already shown that he has the insight and the determination to achieve political progress and to bring about many much needed economic and financial reforms. What is important now is for a meaningful debate by all sectors of society about the future of the country. It is, of course, a chronic oversimplification to believe that Thailand is basically divided into the privileged urban elite (the ammart) and the rural masses. The reality is much more complex as living standards have risen all round. There are Red Shirt millionaires and financially embarrassed urban dwellers. The military intervention of May 2014 almost certainly prevented a bloodbath by rival factions in the country. Thousands of weapons have been seized by the military since as many illegal arsenals have been discovered, not only in Bangkok but in the provinces too. The future, of course, is in Thai hands. But most foreigners here will be wishing General Prayuth well in his daunting tasks ahead in achieving reconciliation and reform before a general election late next year.

Blacky, Woodsy & Gary sparkle at Crystal Bay! by Peter Blackburn
Another terrific “low season” field of 34 signed up to play one of our favorites, Crystal Bay and there were several returnees and newcomers to welcome. These were Vince Romeo from Melbourne, Tiziano Dal Pastro from Italy, Paul Jackson from Melbourne, Alan White plus Russell Hall also from Melbourne. It was also time to say farewell to Niall Stuart who will shortly be off to New Zealand but he assures us that he will be back in a week or so. Three mini vans were required and we got away from the GS three minutes earlier than our normal 8:30 a.m. departure time and we headed north up Sukhumvit with a good run, not getting caught for more than a few minutes at the main traffic lights in Sri Racha and 45 minutes later we arrived at the course which appeared to be very quiet. After checking in and preparation we made our way down to see the starter who informed us that we would be playing the C and A nines in that order. The numbers in the field caused us to have two three balls so we sensibly sent them away first which meant they got away eight minutes ahead of our booked time of 10 a.m. The weather was great although fairly windy which was good as it helped to make playing conditions a little easier although it made some holes rather tough into the wind. The golf course was in very good condition although some of the greens were a touch bumpy which at time set some challenges. The two three balls slowly got away from us and we completed a very enjoyable round in four hours and fifteen minutes. The company was excellent, weather was perfect, and the course was as usual in top “nick”.
We had three divisions – Division A for handicaps 0 to 14, Division B for golfers on handicaps of 15 to 22 and Division C for handicaps of 23 and over with four places in each division. There were also rewards for nearest the pin on the par threes and longest first putts on the A9 and C9 greens. Your writer, Peter “Blacky” Blackburn shook off his very poor recent form and won the A Division with 40 points which was 4 points better than Takeshi Hakozaki who finished second. With three golfers on 35 points a count back was needed to sort out third and fourth and it was Martin “Toddy” Todd (19-point back nine) who got third spot from John Pierrel (18-point back nine) in fourth place with Mike Allidi (17-point back nine) just missing out. Division B was a close affair with two players on 41 points and it was Alan “Woodsy” White (22-point back nine) who was declared the winner from John Davis (19-point back nine) in second place. Graham “Grunter” Buckingham finished third with 33 points and Ernie Picken was fourth on 32 points. In C Division there was a “bolter” with Gary Monley’s 41 points easily good enough to win from Russell Calcutt, 7 points further back in second place. Yet another count back was required to determine third and fourth with two golfers on 33 points and it was Tiziano Dal Pastro (18-point back nine) who got the “chocolates” from Geri “Birdy” Crilly (15-point back nine) in fourth place. Results for Crystal Bay: Division A – 0 to 14 1st – Peter Blackburn (11) - 40 points 2nd – Takeshi Hakozaki (12) 36 points
3rd – Martin Todd (8) - 35 points 4th – John Pierrel (10) - 35 points
The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by Growling Swan mine host Peter Grey and he accepted the award like the good sport that he is. Andrew then kindly paraded Deefa the Dog and of course collected many donations for the needy in
Pattaya from our generous Growling Swan golfers. Back at the bar there was a very good crowd who stayed for quite some time, running over the events of the day and listening to Geri Crilly’s rule interpretations and of course the blow-by-blow account of his birdy on C3. Another very good day with many more to come. Growling Swan Golf, the home of friendly golf in Pattaya welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low and high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. Emerald G.C. (Stableford) Sponsored by KPK Foods Near perfect golfing weather today to start the month of August with a medal competition at The Emerald course. It’s fair to say the course has improved significantly since our previous visit last month, with most of the new grass on the fairways beginning to bed in, and the greens returning to their previous good condition. The course was quiet and the round progressed smoothly with the leading three ball completing the round in well under four hours. It was a day when Rab McDonald re-found his form after a slump which has seen his handicap rise from 11 to 15 over the first fifteen games of his visit. Rab’s score of nett par was enough to clinch the top spot one stroke ahead of Colin
Grieg, with Steve Durey taking third place a further stroke behind. We welcomed back Lee Butler today after almost a year’s absence from golf while he was concentrating on building a new house, and his caddy made it a memorable day by driving straight over a concrete post and breaking the drive shaft of the buggy! Fortunately Lee was playing in the final group, and after waiting for a replacement buggy to arrive, it took the group the best part of an hour to play the final two holes, and still nobody caught them up. At the presentation Rab McDonald received his KPK food voucher and was in high spirits (supplying an endless stream of jokes) for the first time in weeks – amazing how a return to form can make the world seem a brighter place!

Tips & Advice QUICK TIP
Pattaya Today’s longest running and most popular column of its genre on the Eastern Seaboard ends its 13-year run with this edition.
Interior Design Our daughter and a friend were on the sofa using marking pens to color some pictures. Needless to say, they colored more than just the pictures, redesigning the color scheme of our sofa. The permanent markers left what I hope are not permanent marks on the fabric. How can we get them out? Susan Soak a clean rag in rubbing alcohol and dab the stains gently. Do not rub the fabric, just blot it, rotating the cloth to a clean spot as it becomes soiled. Iron Man My steam iron, now a couple years old, no longer steams. It gets hot and is otherwise in good condition, but no steam. Can you offer any suggestions? Albert The most common reason that steam irons stop steaming is that they become clogged with mineral deposits. Try this, Albert: pour white (clear) vinegar into the iron’s water reservoir, and then set it flat on an oven rack. Plug in the iron and turn the setting to “Steam.” By the time the vinegar is steamed out, your iron should be clean. Between the Sheets Hello, Andy, I would like to know where in the Pattaya area one can buy Perspex sheets with the protective cover on both sides of the sheets, not the brittle type of sheets. Michael Unless you’re stuck on the British brand name, Michael, you should have no problem finding acrylic sheets all over town. I don’t know about the differences between the sheets, that is, single- or dual-sided veneers, or brittle versus tough. I think your best bet would be to check out sign makers near your home or workplace. If you’re in the North Pattaya area, drive up Naklua Road from Dolphin Roundabout. Go approximately a quarter of a mile and on the right side—across from Bank of Ayudhya— you’ll see a shop which carries what might be the largest selection of acrylic sheets in town. If you’re on the South end of town, there’s a sign maker shop on Theppraya Road as you drive south (toward Jomtien) on Second Road past South Pattaya Road (before you reach the flyover).
When you bring home a hand of bananas from the market, separate the bananas from the stalk and from one another. (Best done by cutting at the stems using a serrated knife.) If you don’t take them apart, they will ripen faster.
Sticking Together We moved to Pattaya over a year ago, Andy, but we didn’t unpack all of our things until recently when we finally bought a condo. Anyway, come to find out in opening a box of old photos that many—if not most— are stuck together, maybe from the heat or just being in storage so long. We can’t seem to pull them apart without tearing them. Is there anything to be done? Evelyn Having photographs that are stuck together is common when they’ve been stored or packed for a long period of time, Evelyn. Getting them apart simply takes patience and a hair dryer. Setting the dryer temperature on low, hold the nozzle a short distance from the photographs and slowly melt the photos while gently pulling them apart. Be careful not to pull on them with any force or you may destroy the picture. Germ Warfare I haven’t been able to find (or perhaps don’t recognize because I don’t read Thai) any commercial cleaning products available locally that have disinfectant properties. My husband says we can use plain peroxide which is available at most pharmacies. Is he right? If so, how is it used and for what? Bernice Childress Hydrogen peroxide—or “normal hydrogen” as it is called here in Thailand—is, indeed, an effective and inexpensive disinfectant that has many applications. For your purposes, Bernice, pour a small amount onto a cleaning rag and wipe down kitchen counters, table tops, place mats, etc., to get rid of germs. Or pour the peroxide into a spray bottle and spray on counters and appliances (stove, refrigerator, toaster, microwave, etc.) After using your cutting board—particularly if you’ve used it for slicing or sectioning raw chicken—wash it in hot, sudsy water, and then pour peroxide on it to kill salmonella and other bacteria. Use peroxide full strength to disinfect bathroom counters and fixtures, and diluted (50/50 mixture with water) for your toilet; unlike bleach and other harsh products, peroxide will not harm your septic system. You can also soak your toothbrushes in a cup of peroxide to keep them germ free (rinse well before using). Some people go a bit too far, using it as a nasal spray and/
or mouthwash or hair lightener; that may be unsafe. However, peroxide is an effective first aid treatment on cuts, fungus and skin infections. Repaving with Bitumen I’m having problems with pebbledash/stonewash. When my neighbour had it in Australia the Readymix truck turned up and poured it at least three-inches thick plus with reinforcing. Here they seem to put a cement base and then a very thin layer. It is probably OK for pedestrian traffic but not vehicles. I have had mine done twice in eight years and it is starting to lift again. I am thinking of bitumen, any thoughts and do you know of companies that do small jobs mine is 10 meters by 10 meters (100sq metres). Tony Robbins I assume that you want to repave a drive or a carport, Tony, and I have limited knowledge about the topic. And, sorry to say, I do not know of any outfits that might provide such services. I would venture to guess, however, that bitumen would be a more resilient and a longer-lasting option inasmuch as it’s not as rigid as a thin layer of solid cement. If you are able to find a contractor that takes on smaller jobs, you might suggest that he use bitumen and insist on a thicker pour. It would be a good idea for you to be on-site to supervise the concrete proportions of cement to sand and water to ensure a stronger mix. It also might be advisable to have him use some type of reinforcement such as rebar or at least a heavy wire mesh. Signs of Our Times This sign, “Golf Club Rules,” was actually posted at a golf club: 1. Back straight, knees bent, feet shoulder-width apart. 2. Form a loose grip. 3. Keep your head down! 4. Stay out of the water. 5.Try not to hit anyone. 6. If you are taking too long, let others go ahead of you. 7. Don’t stand directly in front of others. 8. Quiet please...while others are preparing. 9. Don’t take extra strokes. 10. Well done. Now, flush the urinal, go outside, and tee off. Sawasdee khrap talawt pai, Handy Andy

Our Community Father Ray Month by Derek Franklin
Father Ray Month takes place each year in August to commemorate the passing of Father Ray Brennan, the founder of several social projects here in Pattaya. Since his passing on August 16, 2003, the foundation named after him has continued his work and vision and each year remembers his life and work. On the morning of August 2, a convoy of superbikes left the foundation headquarters on Sukhumvit Road to make the 8-kilometer journey to the Father Ray Children’s Home in Nongprue. The bikes were followed by several coaches full of children and students, all of whom are living or being educated at the Father Ray Foundation. Upon arriving at the Children’s Home they met a second parade coming from the opposite direction. Led by a marching band and followed by several elephants, upon which were riding Father Peter and Father Michael, president and vice president of Father Ray Foundation. Children and students arrived to join in the fun from the Father Ray Children’s
Village, Drop-In Center for Street Kids, MERCY Pattaya, Anti-trafficking Center, School for the Blind and the Vocational School for People with Disabilities and they all watched in silence as Father Peter opened the day’s event by laying a new floral garland on the statue of Father Ray. There was free food and the Pattaya Colour Guard entertained everyone with their fast dance routine which saw flags and rifles being thrown in to the air. There was also several traditional Thai dance performances which were preceded by the flower girls scattering rose petals.
Many of the younger children watching scrambled to collect the petals thinking they were a symbol of good luck, and the children screamed in delight as the elephants decided to leave a very large and smelly souvenir. Other events taking
place this month include a memorial mass taking at St. Nikolaus Church on Sukhumvit Road on August 16 at 19:30, all are welcome. More information can be found at www.fr-ray.org or email info@fr-ray.org
been established over many years and are unable to resist a call for help from children and Santikam School was a case in point. Plans were discussed and, fortunately, a local builder presented us with a very competitive quotation and, with the OK from both PSC and Jesters committees, got down to work immediately. As we drove into Santikam School on a hot Thursday morning, Woody from Jesters, Noy of YWCA, William and Nigel of Pattaya Sports Club were surprised when we were welcomed by the school percussion band and many teachers to conduct
the formal handover of the new toilets which were funded by Jesters and Pattaya Sports Club. The visitors were encouraged to join in and dance as the band played. The existing cubicles were upgraded with new toilets with colorful tiles on the floors and walls. The additional cubicles were built in a similar design to the existing toilets, with two new hand basins and some brightly colored paint. It was quite obvious that everybody was happy with the improvements and their appreciation was shown by an official ceremony to formally open the new facilities.
Pattaya Sports Club and Jesters combine to build new toilets by William Macey Forty-eight years ago the Nong Pla Lai area, very similar to Pattaya, was quiet with very little development and it was sufficient for Santikam to open as a kindergarten school for children below school age and to help parents of young children who had to find work, probably in the surrounding fields. When they opened everything was in place and ideal for just a few children, but as more families settled in the area the demand to expand, to take in more and older children, could not be resisted and they now have 250 children below the age of 12. The number of teachers has increased to 15 and the school has most of the facilities like sporting areas and
classrooms to enable the school to provide an education to an ever increasing number of children. But one area that had fallen behind was the toilet facilities. On one side of the school, there were five toilets for children and 15 teachers, not an ideal situation. But on the other side only four toilets existed for 120 children that studied in that area with no washing facilities and, over the years, badly needed some upgrading. It does not take much imagination to realize that there were problems at various times of the day, a mad rush to be the first in the queue. YWCA contacted Pattaya Sports Club and Jesters Care for Kids to ask their help. Both organizations have
Miss Universe New Zealand visits Father Ray Foundation by Derek Franklin Twenty-five finalists of the 2014 Miss Universe New Zealand pageant arrived at the Father Ray Foundation as part of their whirlwind tour of Thailand. Upon arriving, the visitors were greeted by Father Peter and Father Michael,
president and vice president of the foundation, who presented welcome garlands of orchids to the Miss Universe contestants. The visitors were invited to take a seat before receiving a second welcome garland, this time from the children and students, before Father Peter gave a welcome speech. The first performance was from the toddlers who attend Father Ray Day Care Center, who danced a routine about a little caterpillar turning into a butterfly. The second performance came from a group of wheelchair-bound students from Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities. But it was the final performance from the choir at Pattaya Redemptorist School for the Blind who sang two songs,
Amazing Grace and You Are My Sunshine, that touched the hearts of the visitors. But no sooner had the visitors arrived and it was time to go on to their next scheduled appointment, but not before a few photos were taken and the ladies laid flowers on the statue of Father Ray, as the foundation is commemorating the 11th anniversary of his passing this month.

The Importance of Play in a Child's Life by Harry Yadav
It’s true that education is like a building block for a child’s future. All parents dream of a better career for their child’s life. Everybody wants their child to be a doctor or engineer and wants to see them in high posts. In this cut throat competition children get pressurize with their activities to the extent that they don’t get spare time for their own entertainment. Teachers also keep the child busy during the holidays by giving them assignments and
homework. Earlier children used to play with their siblings. So, the children easily got a play environment at the home. However, now the time spent by children in playing was very less as compared to the past two decades. Parents should understand that play is an important activity and they should not deprive their child from this opportunity. Group games allow children to learn the values of team spirit. It also teaches them to cooperate with other members of the team and develop self discipline. This also enables them to face
negative situation in life and make them strong when they get defeated. Many studies have proved that children playing games which have lots of violence are likely to be more short tempered and aggressive. It is the duty of the parents to find out whether the child knows the difference between fantasy and reality. When this problem is not uprooted in the initial stages then it can take very ugly turn in child’s life and they will start presuming that real life is also like the games which they play. It will have a negative impact on children mind because inappropriate games will impart wrong set of values in them. Through play children develop essential life skills; they also learn how to interact with their peers and adults. It is through play that children develop essential life skills; they
learn how to interact with their peers and with adults. There are certain benefits that child get after playing. These benefits are given below: 1. Reduces fear, anxiety, stress, irritability 2. Creates joy, intimacy, self-esteem and mastery not based on other's loss of esteem 3. Improves emotional flexibility and openness 4. Increases calmness, resilience and adaptability and ability to deal with surprise and change 5. Decreases tactile defensiveness
6. Healing process for hurts 7. Enhances feelings of acceptance of difference 8. Increases empathy, compassion, and sharing 9. Creates options and choices 10. Models relationships based on inclusion rather than exclusion 11. Alternative to aggressor-victim model of relationships 12. Decreases revenge and need for self defense 13. Improves touch and nonverbal socialization skills 14. Increases attention and attachment capacities
15. Positive emotions increase the efficiency of immune, endocrine, and cardiovascular systems 16. Decreases stress, fatigue, injury, and depression 17. Integrates sensor motor, kinesthetic and emotional responses In conclusion every child should be allowed to play as they learn so many skills from playing, and from defeating. Play is essential for every child’s development as it make them well balanced grown up and prepare with all the essential life skills needed.
GIS student’s amazing achievement by Mark Beales
A student who overcame incredible challenges to complete a pre-university course has been praised by his teachers. Kyoungjun Lee, or Paul, studied for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at Garden International School (GIS). He recently found out that despite several disabilities, including cerebral palsy, he had been awarded the diploma. Paul, who lives in Pattaya, said he was “relieved, excited and delighted” when finding out his grades. For his examinations, GIS, which is based in Ban Chang near Pattaya, provided Paul with extra support, such as having a scribe to write down answers, larger examination papers and more time – all in line with IB rules. Paul said he wanted to take the IB course at GIS because he “wanted to prove to others that having a physical disability does not mean that I am also stupid.” Paul, who is from Korea, has mild cerebral palsy which results in difficulties walking and also has trouble
with finger movements, so writing is a challenge. He is also significantly dyslexic so reading textbooks was difficult. The 20-year-old explained how this has made studying harder: “In basic terms, I have a great deal of problems in reading and writing. Nearly all study, particularly at higher levels, is heavily dependent on both these skills.” Throughout his school career, Paul has had help from several mentors, and he said this had been crucial. “I have had excellent support from my mentors outside school. My first was a vital and valuable survival resource for about 10 years. When he died, I was deeply bereaved. I was fortunate to find another mentor for most of my IB course.” As well as having a mentor, Paul was given considerable support from the GIS teachers. Paul said, “I was very well supported by GIS. I had a series of excellent scribes who wrote for me and helped me in reading, too. My teachers were supportive and encouraged me. During the examinations, I had the support, cooperation
and writing skills of many teachers to take my dictation without helping me to answer the questions. I thank all the staff, individually and collectively, for all the support and encouragement that they offered me.” The IB course is the world’s leading pre-university course and Paul said to be awarded the diploma was extremely difficult for any student. He also had some words of advice for students thinking about doing the course. He added, “IB is challenging. It is not based on teachers giving information or facts and the students having to learn it and then express it back again in exams. Philosophically, it is dependent on students’ learning to think for themselves and do lots of independent study. “You need to have adequate support outside school as well as from teachers and fellow students. “IB prepares you better for undergraduate and postgraduate studying and creates and develops skills for each of us to become lifelong learners in a creative and
rigorous way.” Paul, who was voted student council president during his time at GIS, now has a new goal – a university placement. He explained: “I want to study psychology at the University of Queensland, Australia, or maybe another Australian university.” Whichever university Paul attends, he is keen to give something back to his community and help others who face similar challenges. Paul said, “I am strongly drawn to doing something for disability rights. “After my first degree, I want to train as a counselor so that I can help others to deal with the problems, pressures and prejudices faced by physical disabilities. I also want to be an advocate for disability rights.” Ian Fraser, IB coordinator at GIS, said, “Paul constantly impressed everyone at GIS with his determination, drive and effort. “We have many wonderful students at GIS who achieve excellent results, but for Paul to gain the IB diploma is remarkable. “We are very proud to
have been able to help Paul, and we wish him all the best for the future.” Dr Stuart Tasker, GIS principal, added, “Paul is a shining example of what can be achieved if you really want something.” GIS, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, has been offering the IB Diploma Programme since 1998. You & Your Pets
Is there a little one in your future?
If you’re thinking about adopting a cute little bunny rabbit, think twice. Then one more time. Those cute and cuddly creatures bite, crap, eat, chew on things, and get big. And they will be around for what seems like forever. Which means feeding them, cleaning their messes, and nurturing and caring for them in sickness and in health. If you’re still considering a bunny instead of a friend, know that the little rascals can be affectionate, fun, and great companions. They are loyal and bright. Inquisitive and sociable. Most importantly, they can be trained. You can teach them to come when called. Teach them to play tag with you. And—the best part—teach them to use a litter box. Rabbits are naturally clean and will do their best to keep their living quarters clean. Most rabbits will choose one corner of the cage to relieve itself. As soon as your rabbit’s choice is clear, put a newspaperlined litter box in that corner. Fill it with hay or pelleted-newspaper litter. If the litter box is changed daily, your rabbit’s home will stay fresh and odorfree. Avoid using clay cat litters (both clumping and non-clumping), as these may result in respiratory or gastrointestinal problems. Rabbits can be messy, so you’ll need to clean your pet’s cage once or twice weekly. Put your rabbit in a safe room or alternate cage as you sweep out the cage and scrub the floor with warm, soapy water. Pick up your rabbit by supporting his forequarters with one hand and his hindquarters with the other— failure to do so can result in spinal injuries to the rabbit. Never pick up a rabbit by his ears; this can cause very serious injury. Brush your rabbit regularly with a soft brush to remove excess hair and keep his coat in good condition. Brush from the back of the head down to the tail. Ask your veterinarian how to clip your pet’s nails. The only place for your rabbit’s cage is indoors. For one thing, rabbits do not like being isolated (like alone in your back yard or on your balcony). For another, rabbits can die of heart attacks from the very approach of a predator (even birds or pigeons). Keep your bunny safe indoors, where he can have plenty of interaction with family members.
Going to the Dogs... Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea. -Robert A. Heinlein
Bull frogs don’t sleep?
Rabbits require a lot of room for housing and exercise. They have powerful hind legs designed for running and jumping. Get a cage large enough to allow him to move freely—at least one-square meter. The cage should have a solid bottom; cover it with plenty of straw or hay so your pet can make a cozy nest. Rabbits can be destructive, usually because owners fail to provide appropriate toys to fulfill their natural urges to dig and chew. Safe chew toys include cardboard boxes, books, and commercially made chew sticks. A nice treat would be a digging box--a cardboard box filled halfway with soil or shredded paper.
Cats for You in Pattaya
Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Contact Paul and Sandra on 0852875004 or look at their useful website http://cats4youinpattaya.webs.com/
Ginny
This lovely ginger girl came to us with a tummy full of kittens all of which have now gone to new homes. Ginny likes to stay indoors so would make an ideal pet for someone living in an apartment; she is a quiet and friendly cat who just loves lots of cuddles.
Vincent
This fine ginger boy had a very bad time a few months ago. He survived being hit by a car but had a broken jaw and sadly lost an eye. He also has the FELV virus which means that he cannot mix with other cats. However, he is a most friendly and loving cat and is expected to live a long and normal life with regular checkups.
Graham
Your rabbit needs a safe exercise area with ample room to run and jump, either indoors or out, several hours a day. Any outdoor area should be fully enclosed by a fence. Never leave a rabbit unsupervised outdoors—even for a few minutes! Cats, dogs and even predatory birds can easily get around fencing material. Also, rabbits can dig under fences and get lost. You can rabbit-proof an indoor area by covering all electrical wires and anything else your pet is likely to chew. Grass hay is vital to your rabbit’s diet and health, and good-quality rabbit pellets are important. Unlimited hay and pellets for the first six months, then reduce pellets to about ¼-cup a day per five pounds of body weight. Pellets should be fresh and plain, without seeds, nuts or colored tidbits. About a third of his diet should include several cups of fresh, leafy vegetables. And don’t forget to provide clean, fresh water in a bottle or sturdy bowl.
This very cute and fluffy grey kitten is one of four born at the Pattaya Today offices. By the time you read this article all should be old enough to go to new homes. They are litter trained and eat solid food, why not choose a pair to come and play with you?
Mollie & Alfie
As you can see in the photo, Alfie’s mom Mollie has now just been neutered. She is a devoted mom and would love to find a new home where she can live together with her young lad. This sleepy pair in the photo actually spends most of their time playing together.
Cat Corner Tip by Dr. RJ Peters to Pattaya’s cat lovers
Cats are carnivores... not cornivores. Be sure their food contains meat, chicken or fish and— more importantly— that your cat’s diet does not consist primarily of grains such as corn, wheat and rice. Dr. Peters is the author of three informative and entertaining books about household pets: Our Amazing Cats, and Our Amazing Cats Vol. 2, now available from Amazon Books and at www.ouramazingcats. com, and her newest book, Our Amazing Dogs. To download ebook versions of any or all three books (about 200 baht each), go to http:// youniquesolutions.com/3Books.html. Dr. Peters’ free newsletter, The Kitty Times, is available at http:// www.theproblemcat.com. (Proceeds from book sales help support abandoned cats; the books help support your emotional health through their heartwarming stories.)
