Pattaya cleanup or control by military?
O
fficials in Pattaya are working flat out to improve drastically Pattaya’s image rather than face direct intervention by the military junta’s NCPO (National Council for Peace and Order). The city’s acting Police Chief, Colonel Supatee Boonkrong said he wanted to eradicate prostitution in the interests of public safety and to restore “happiness” throughout the Eastern Seaboard resort. Teams of police, assisted by Thai and foreign volunteers, have rounded up hundreds of women and transgenders. Although they are usually fined 100 or 200 baht and released after being fingerprinted and checked on ID records, the sheer intensity of the crackdown has been a cause of general surprise. Some suspected prostitutes have been arrested several times in a week. Many of those arrested, or rearrested, have been ladyboys who have long been a feature of Pattaya after dark, especially in beachfront areas. But there have been regular, ongoing complaints from foreign tourists about being robbed by transvestites working in gangs. Commonly, one member of the group pretends to show affection to a confused stranger while another with nimble fingers steals a wallet or pendant before making a quick escape on a waiting motorbike. “Although not all cross-dressing males are criminals,” said a Tourist Police officer on Walking Street, “those hanging around at night probably are up to no good.” He added that no other public order problem in Pattaya had been given higher priority by both the previous Yingluck Shinawatra government and by the coup-installed administration from last May. Another subject of the anti-crime crackdown concerns the Pattaya and Jomtien beaches where, traditionally, the hundreds of operators have contravened local regulations by ignoring Continued on page 4

Thief robbed 7-Eleven store
Prompan Promma, 42, from Koh Sichang in Chonburi, was arrested after holding up a 7-Eleven convenience store near Walking Street and then stealing a motorbike which was parked outside. The accused admitted the offenses saying that he intended to sell the bike to a friend in Rayong but then changed his mind and decided to keep his ill-gotten gains. He was additionally charged with using threatening behavior with a knife during the commission of a crime.
Lights out for Gas cylinder causes car fire Pattaya sex show
Residents poured buckets of cold water on a car parked at the Nirun Grand Condo after noticing that it had caught fire. The incident took place in front of a Thai restaurant attached to the condo and the white Toyota was badly damaged before the fire brigade arrived to give the final squirts. The owner, Pongsak Kateboonak, 37, told police he had parked his car as usual and gone to his apartment. Then someone came to his room to say his car was on fire. The mystery was solved after a cook at the restaurant explained that a gas cylinder had exploded which led to a most unwelcome end to a treasured vehicle.
A group of Chinese tourists complained to the police that they had been tricked by a street guide who promised he could take them to premises where live sex shows were being performed. The foreigners each paid him 2,000 baht but, when they arrived at the designated venue, the place was locked up. The guide, Itthinan Pantien, told police later that he had no idea why the place was not operating and became confused as he did not know what to do next. He added that he wanted to pay back the cash to the Chinese visitors but sadly did not have any spare money.
CCTV didn’t support Smothering murderer customer complaint fails to surrender
Police rushed to an Indian restaurant in South Pattaya after hearing that an Omani man claimed to have been beaten up by the owner and his henchmen. But the owner Arthit Khiawraksa explained that the man had come into the restaurant with his girlfriend and had ordered several dishes. He then started complaining about the slowness of delivery even though barely five minutes had elapsed and the
premises were quite full at the time. The customer spoke to Arthit rudely, pushing him and grabbing his shirt. This led to more violence between the two men and the Omani later needed hospital treatment. However, the in-house CCTV failed to show that three workers at the restaurant had joined in the fray as claimed but, instead, tried to stop the confrontation by appealing to reason.
A man who killed his wife by pressing a pillow into her face for several minutes promised his mother-in-law to surrender to the authorities but has failed to do so. Supphachai booked an air ticket to Trat but failed to take the flight. Police are confident he is the alleged murderer because he sent an online message admitting his guilt. He is also suspected of having obtained a fake ID card in the name of a relative who died six years ago. It is believed that the murder may have been committed after Supphachai suspected his wife of marital infidelity.

News Pattaya cleanup or Merit making at Amari control by military? Continued from page 1
Amari Pattaya hosted a merit-making ceremony on the occasion of its 42nd birthday. Executives, led by general manager Brendan Daily, attended their ceremony performed by nine monks. Amari Pattaya offers deluxe accommodation in the resort with its luxury hotel Amari Ocean Pattaya and tropical resort Amari Garden Pattaya.
Bank promotes its services Police arrested ladyboys loitering in beachfront areas
limitations of allocated space, cooking food for customers on the beach or failing to stack umbrellas and chairs overnight. Khun Nat, a beach vendor for 20 years, said “Everyone is cooperating as they want to avoid the army directly enforcing the regulations as happened in Phuket and Koh Samui.” According to local media, the condition of the beaches in Phuket has improved dramatically since the army took the responsibility to clear obstructions and to enforce by-laws which has led to some operators losing their livelihood. During a recent televised speech on Restoring Happiness to Thai People, the army commander and new Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha specifically referred to the evils of some seaside Jet Ski renters who seek to defraud the renting public by chronically overcharging for small dents and scratches or even by claiming compensation for accidents caused by a previous customer. He made it clear he wanted the problem, which has caused many complaints from foreign embassies, sorted out promptly. In Pattaya, the civic authorities have made several half-hearted
attempts over the years to register and regulate Jet Ski operators and to try and arrange group insurance schemes for operators. But several Jet Ski operators admitted that the current crackdown was for real. Tourist police sources told Pattaya Today there had not been a case of harassment of foreigners since the coup leader made his televised speech. Critics argue that cleaning up Pattaya, a resort which provides billions of baht of revenue annually, is a complex matter. They say that ordering prostitutes off the streets, cleaning up beaches and solving the Jet Ski crisis are all “low-hanging fruit”, in other words problems relatively easy to solve in a crackdown. The “high-hanging” fruit, such as endemic corruption among officials at all levels, will be a very different issue. There is also the point that street and nightclub prostitution has likely declined to make way for internet-based dating services which are growing in popularity. “Closing nightclubs and clearing streets doesn’t necessarily mean that casual pickups no longer occur,” as one city policeman delicately put it.

Thailand Tourism Awards now seeking contenders The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is inviting tourism business operators nationwide to submit their products and services for the 10th Thailand Tourism Awards 2015. The submission period starts from now until November 30, 2014. The Thailand Tourism Awards are part of TAT’s ongoing efforts to constantly upgrade and enhance the standards of the kingdom’s tourist destinations, to promote creativity, encourage environmentally-friendly tourism practices, and to ensure the Thai tourism and hospitality industry’s competitiveness within ASEAN. The award is divided into five categories:
tourist attractions; organizational bodies that have strongly supported and promoted Thai tourism; accommodation; health tourism and travel programs. Held every two years since 1996, next year’s awards are the 10th to be held, so 2015 marks the 20th anniversary of the event. The awards ceremony itself is to take place on September 27, 2015, which is also the World Tourism Day. Anyone working in the tourism industry or related businesses can find further details at http://tourismawards.tourismthailand.org or get the application from the TAT’s head office on Phetchaburi Road or at TAT regional offices.
Illegal immigrants found working
A beach vendor who appeared in a video clip on the internet kicking sand at a Russian woman was arrested for threatening behavior. Ping, a Cambodian national aged 28, was upset because the tourist in question sat on the beach but refused to rent either a deck chair or an umbrella. Police invited 100 beach vendors for a friendly chat in the hope this was an isolated incident. The alleged offense occurred a year ago, but surfaced on the internet only recently.
Teacher suspended after assault Police raided two restaurants in Sri Racha and arrested 10 Laos and 15 Vietnamese nationals who were working without the necessary authorization or paperwork. Most did not even have a passport and admitted they had entered Thailand in great secrecy. All were taken to the Immigration Police for processing and deportation.
Tourist charged with lying about robbery
After a mother reported that a teacher at a private school had hit her 9-year-old son with a stick, the teacher in question was told not to report for duty pending an inquiry. The school director Prayoon Jandech said he had talked to all parties in the dispute and confirmed that it was school policy not to use excessive force of any kind in disciplinary situations. It is understood that the teacher is ready to apologize.
Crew member dead after storm An eight-man sailing boat sank in rough seas of Koh Phai, 18 miles from Pattaya, leading to the death of one crew member who became trapped in the engine room and drowned. Adisak Saetang, 41 and the steersman, said everyone on board was told to jump into the heaving waters and wait for a rescue which took several hours to occur. The dead man was said to be called Kid, aged 38 and a Myanmar national.
Turkish pants reveal ladies’ garments A 64-year-old man from Turkey was nabbed for shoplifting women’s clothing at Big C Extra on Central Pattaya Road. Security guards at the store became suspicious when they noticed Sam Hedayat
lingering in the women’s clothing section. They then reportedly saw him stuff garments into his pants and exit the store without paying. Arresting police found eight garments worth about 3,000 baht hidden in the Turk’s pants.
A 48-year-old British tourist, Jaysukh Sudra, has been charged with perjury after making up a sorry tale that he had been attacked by three men with knives near the Tune Hotel in North Pattaya by bandits who ran off with his digital camera, a watch, a mobile phone, personal documents and 20,000 baht. But when police investigators asked for more details, he could not answer them and changed his story, initially claiming the attack had taken place in an alley but later stating it was on the beach. The CCTV at the hotel showed that the man was not carrying any bags on arrival at the hotel nor did he wear a watch on either wrist. But the video
showed he went out at 8 pm and returned four hours later with two bottles of beer in his hands. Faced with the overwhelming evidence of telling lies, he admitted his perjury.
Gamblers face the music again Following a tipoff from a worthy citizen, police raided a den of iniquity in Soi Daeng Dam, Central Pattaya, where 16 card players and roulette addicts were in full session. The arrests were part of the campaign to clean up Pattaya and bring it up to international standards in law enforcement and public morality.

Thailand the tops for retirees Thailand has been named one of the world’s most popular countries for seniors and retirees according to the online newspaper The Huffington Post. The article looked at the ease of low financial requirements to take up residence and found that Thailand shared the honors with Malaysia, Ecuador and Panama. Thawatchai Arunyik, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said “Thailand has long been a popular destination for retirees owing to advantageous exchange rates that ensure pensions and savings go further than in many competing destinations. Thailand offers a retirement visa, renewable annually, with income or bank balances as low as 65,000 baht monthly or 800,000 baht a year. Recently the Thai government has been encouraging tourism by a number of initiatives including visa-free travel for nationals of China and Taiwan, a 30-day extension for passport holders
from 49 countries who obtain an initial 30-day visa-free travel at Thai airports and border crossings and three-month visas for some foreigners seeking medical treatment in the country.

expanding fast
throughout Thailand Fun for beginners and experts alike by Barry Kenyon
The word is spreading fast among tourists and Thais alike that go-karting is for just about everyone. You don’t have to be good at sports, or even particularly strong behind the wheel. Everyone from the age of eight to old-age pensioners can enjoy the thrills, and you don’t even need a driving license.
Billed by TripAdvisor as one of the best attractions in the ever-diversifying Pattaya, EasyKart is situated at the end of Walking Street just across from Bali Hai pier. This is the ideal place to live out your Grand Prix fantasies – assuming you have any – and experience first-hand the thrills of this unique and rapidly expanding motorsport. American Art Ingels is generally believed to be the father of karting. A veteran hot rodder and a race car builder at Kurtis Kraft, he built the first kart in Southern California as early as 1956. The first engines for karts were produced in 1959 and, during the next decade, motorcycle engines were adapted for karts before dedicated manufacturers started to construct engines specifically for the sport. Enthusiasm and dedication are the hallmarks of go-karting, so it’s not surprising that EasyKart’s marketing director and general manager Peter Klein fills the bill. Totally committed since his pre-teen years, Peter has the impressive achievement of European and American trophies and championships. A German-American and a civil engineer by training, Peter is married to a Thai lady and has three daughters to support. He fell in love with Thailand on his very first visit and comments that his rheumatic shoulder hates cold weather in any case. Peter and his business associates opened their go-kart business in Bangkok almost eleven years ago. Situated in the RCA Plaza, the speedway covers 7,000 square metres, making it the biggest go-kart track in Asia with annual visitors well into six figures. Unlike the Pattaya facility, EasyKart in Bangkok is undercover. The Pattaya EasyKart facility is the biggest and most hi-tech in the Eastern Seaboard resort with two tracks that can accommodate individuals and larger groups up to 500, providing three different types of karts with engine capacities varying between 100cc and 270cc. A huge overhaul and reconstruction of the entire site is scheduled for the last quarter of the year with total resurfacing among the new features. Safety is always a key concern at this professionally-run track and all necessary equipment and insurance are provided as a matter of course. There are convenient facilities attached for leisure which include a restaurant, bar and billiards area. “Our leisure area is also superb for watching the go-karts in action as this is as much a spectator as a participant sporting activity,” says Peter.

SUGGESTIONS
Fine Dining on the Dark Side Residents of the “Dark Side” (East Pattaya) will have become familiar with a large orange-colored house that has sat on Pattanakarn Road for over two decades. Take a closer look today and you will see that this family residence has morphed into a restaurant called Suggestions. This is the new establishment of patron/chef Edwin Lormans whose culinary belt has some impressive notches from his globetrotting gastro-experiences. The genre for this new restaurant is bold, modern European food that remains true to chef Edwin’s culinary roots. The terrace offers an al fresco element while the interior is quite dramatic yet cozy bedecked in African violet velvet and glistening chandeliers. A semi-private alcoved area makes for secluded dining while the main room, which is awaiting more tables and chairs, provides a quartet of tables dressed to nines in white napery and sparkling glass. Mick and I were sipping a glass of house white wine (B.130) and perusing the menu when a basket of crusty bread materialized served with a small preserve jar of chicken liver parfait. Smooth, creamy and
delightful it was a delicious prestarter to our meal and was rapidly devoured. The menu spans Europe offering a taste of Italy, France and Belgium from where chef Edwin hails. There is also quite an extensive selection of Thai favorites. Starters offer a trio of bruschettas, the classic tomato, basil and balsamic at only B.95 moving on to smoked salmon cocktail with dill cream, mussels gratinated with garlic butter (B.165), scallops with leek in a white wine sauce, and a two-sized mixed seafood platter of salmon, scallops, crab and shrimp for B.185 and B.245, respectively. Our choices made, we awaited the arrival of goat cheese with toast and honey and beef carpaccio. When they hit the table it was gaspworthy! The goat’s cheese was served on its toast atop a mountain of fresh salad leaves surrounded by shaved radishes, pea shoots and tomatoes dressed with a grassy green olive oil and a traditional balsamico. The creamy, distinctively flavored cheese is from our local goat farm off Sukhumvit Road eponymously named “Daisy and Lulu’s Goat Farm”. I’m not sure to which I owe my thanks – but it was a wonderful flavorsome tranche
of cheese. Mick’s gossamer thin carpaccio was as good as expected, the premier-sized plate smothered with the softest tenderest beef and accompanied by green and black olives, onion and capers. Main courses run the gamut of surf and turf commencing with salmon in a creamy white wine sauce at B.325, tartare of tuna with wasabi and salad or a cooked tuna steak Mediterranean style with a pepper and cognac sauce or big gambas flambéed with Pastis and cream. The turf elements are covered by 220 grams of beef tenderloin or rib eye (B.375) and even that famous dish popularized in the bistros of France, steak tartare. Lamb is not overlooked with chef’s special lamb stew topping the list, lamb chops with a Mediterranean approach, braised lamb shank with dauphinoise potatoes and a chicken roll with truffle sauce, warm vegetables and rosti potatoes. Our chosen main events were then served with picture-perfect presentation on those plates large enough to toboggan down a hill. Chicken fillet “Suggestions” style with warm vegetables and mushroom sauce with silver onions
and bacon for Mick and cod fillet with brunoise (diced) vegetables accompanied by a mustard sauce. My cod was a beautiful affair, cooked to perfection with a small separate boat of creamy sauce and escorted by a selection of snappy flawlessly prepared vegetables, the chicken fillet hummed with flavor swathed as it was in a mushroom/ bacon sauce dotted with silverskin onions and a swirl of that powerful balsamic vinegar. Both dishes were top-notch – with bells on. Dessert now beckoned and we ordered the “Special” of the day, chocolate tartufo. It was quite a toss up between the other tempting confections: chocolate mousse, tiramisu, chef’s crepe suzette and even baked Alaska flambéed with Grand Marnier. Tartufo is a sphere of Italian ice cream dessert composed of two or more flavors of the icy cream. The Suggestions chocolate special was scrumptious, a delightful pleasure bomb indeed and as sweet as a goodnight kiss. Suggestions is a neighborhood nugget. Their mission to provide good quality produce at affordable prices in a relaxed and convivial
atmosphere has been accomplished. We are sure that this fine dining restaurant on the “Dark Side” will rapidly become a firm favorite with food lovers everywhere. Suggestions is open daily from midday till 11 pm but closed on Sundays. Tel: 080 451 4307. How to get there: Take Soi 89 on Sukhumvit Road (opposite Makro) the one with 7-Eleven on the corner. Continue up the road, over the railway line following the signs for Tara Pattana International School. Watch out for a left turn into Pattanakarn Road passing the school on your right and then Suggestions is about 1 km further down on the left-hand side. Look for the orange building.

L’OBERG’INN
Vol. 02 No. 18 | Sep 16-30 2014
thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com
at Casa Viva Inn Jomtien
This new restaurant has only recently opened its doors, not only to the residents of the Casa Viva Inn, but to tourists and locals alike. Utilizing the hotel’s space a charming terrace restaurant has been constructed up a short flight of stairs. Colorful tables and chairs, hanging plants and a white picket fence complete the pleasant décor. The brainchild behind this restaurant is one of Jomtien’s inveterate chefs/ restaurateurs, Jacques Scrimali, who latterly ran Levantini and an excellent French creperie in The Village; he has now turned his attention to this bijou bistro called L’Oberg’inn. Jacques’ background is eclectic, born in Morocco to Italian parents before moving to France his love of North African cuisine remains intertwined with his passion for the cuisine of France. Open from 8 am for breakfast until 11:30 pm it is an all-day dining outlet with a concise Thai and French-style menu. The Thai menu offers the gamut of popular dishes from tom yum goong to chicken massaman, all with exceedingly reasonable prices, some under B.100. We remember Jacques’ exciting recipes from the old days at Levantini and were ready to be re-introduced to his special style of cuisine. The western dinner menu, at present, is short and snappy with only nine options but the flavors are
big and the fine ingredients make for good eating. We passed on the soup (creamed asparagus) and instead opted for an assortment of Italian antipasti with chicken liver confit at B.220 and braised shrimps with garlic and ginger zucchini. However, before the appetizers arrive all diners are treated to a complimentary appetizer of lavish proportions. Servings of that darling dish from Nice, pissaldiere (a caramelized onion tart topped with robust anchovies and black olives), small dishes of marinated zucchini and miniature poached salmon bruschettas. A bountiful platter of amuse-bouche indeed. Tri-colored wines are available, red, white and rose and we plumped for the Chateau L’Escart at B.1,200. A full bodied bottle of Bordeaux blends it pairs well with
the vigor of the Mediterranean dishes. Our starters then hit the table with extra plates for sharing. The antipasti consists of five small dishes filled with a superb chicken liver confit, oil and garlic marinated mushrooms, a delicious ratatouille and scrumptious red and yellow peppers in herbs and oils. Across the table Mick was tucking into braised shrimps on a bed of garlic and ginger zucchini – another hit – the flavors intermingling beautifully with the subtleness of the ribboned vegetable. Main courses offer a fish option, chicken fillets in white wine cream sauce served with rice, beef braised in red wine with carrots, spring onion
and vegetables or an Australian rib eye steak weighing in at 220/250 grams accompanied by a pepper mushroom sauce and Dauphinois potatoes (B.450). There is also another dish highlighting Jacques’
penchant for the dishes of northern Africa called chakchouka. We were intrigued, what is this hard-topronounce dish that in recent years has invaded the global foodie scene and is now on the menu of fancy restaurants from London to New York City and now Pattaya. Chakchouka is so “in” right now we just had to try it for ourselves. It is actually a tomato ratatouille and is the quintessential summer dish of Algeria served in numerous ways, sometimes with fried eggs on top and eaten for breakfast or a light lunch. There are many versions of chakchouka but here at L’Oberg’inn it is presented with beef Merguez sausages and accompanied by couscous with raisins. It’s tastes of rosy, ripened tomatoes, red and green peppers, sweet onions, with a hint of some warmth from chili or cayenne pepper. It’s a wonderful dish and together with those spicy Merguez sausages made for a great experience and one which I intend to copy at home. The sweet, delicate flavor of the perch was offset by a creamy puree of spinach and a rocket salad. Attention to detail sums up
Jacques’ kitchen, the food is healthy, tasty and innovative. Oh, now I’ve forgotten to tell you about the other dish on the menu – lamb “hot pot” inspired from the famous Lancashire favorite and the daily special in The Rovers Return. It comes in its own ceramic pot and is made fresh every day. L’Oberg’inn is a delightful addition to the neighborhood’s eateries. Jacques is passionate about his cuisine and it seems only fitting to finish this write-up with his mission statement: To ensure that each guest receives prompt, professional, friendly and courteous service – To provide, at a fair price, nutritional, tasty, well-prepared meals using only fresh seasonal ingredients – To combine modernity, creativity and tradition in cooking – To ensure that all guests and staff are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve and lastly to thank each guest for the opportunity to serve them. Well, you can’t say fairer than that! L’Oberg’inn is located in Soi Sarita Chalet, a wide soi off Jomtien Beach Road midway between Chaiyaphruek Road and Soi Wat Boon. Turn in and about 50 meters on the left is Casa Viva Inn. Up the external stairs is the restaurant. L’Oberg’inn Tel: 082 640 3366 Email: loberginn@outlook.com
Special Feature deVine Wine Club hosts Stonehedge Winery dinner by Mick and Di Barker
Friday the 5th of September was the date in Pattaya’s oenophile’s diary as the next celebratory wine dinner at The Royal Cliff ’s Grill Room and Wine Cellar. The host for the evening was the president of Stonehedge Winery from the Napa Valley in California, Shahin Shahabi, who had selected six varied vintages to accompany the exquisite food of executive chef Walter Thenisch. The evening was graciously presided over by Panga Vathankul, managing director of Royal Cliff Hotels Group, and the event, as always, was enthusiastically attended. In 1992, the Shahabi brothers began producing wines in the small town of St. Helena situated in the heart of California’s Napa Valley. Stonehedge draws its fruit from some of the best vineyards across the state benefiting from their diversely rich and complex soil and widely varying micro-climates. The first pour of degustation dinner was a Stonehedge Sauvignon Blanc 2012 paired with yellowfin tuna topped with a seared peppered citrus-tomato relish. The intense citrus freshness of this wine made very good friends with chef Walter’s fresh, fruity appetizer strewn with shaved Pecorino sardo cheese and dressed with a herb-infused oil – it was a stunning starter. Pan-fried barramundi fillet followed with braised baby carrots, green peas and fava beans in a herb stock. A 2012 Chardonnay with its rich but clean flavors offset this fish course superbly. Glasses of Merlot 2011 were then served to accompany roasted veal tenderloin on fresh grilled asparagus spears with a veal jus. Another
winner – and well matched with the subtle oakiness of the Merlot which offset the slightly coarse texture but sweet flavor of the veal. We loved the purple carrots. The main event of American-style slowcooked beef short ribs served on a bed of enhanced vanilla potatoes and a cauliflower mousseline married well with the big gun of the evening, Cabernet Sauvignon 2011. With its strong blackberry fruit base and elements of vanilla and smoky oak flavors it was a strong marriage. The short ribs were a highly flavored portion of beef and with the slow-cooked method it made them ooh so tender you didn’t need a knife and the thick rich sauce was absolutely delicious with the vanilla rich potatoes. The dessert course was now upon us and the selected wine was a Stonehedge Terroir Select Muscat Canelli 2009. The confectionary at The Royal Cliff is always superb and this sweet offering was no different. A baked chocolate tart with lavender-infused ice cream, fresh berries and frozen kiwi fruit was laid before us. With its high art presentation and scrumptious flavors it was outstanding. Accompanied by the distinctive aromas and sweet, but not too sweet, balance of the Muscat grape the September deVine Wine Club was harmoniously brought to a close before the final serving of coffee and tea. The deVine Wine Club dinners are held every few months and members and non-members are always welcome. Details can be found on the Royal Cliff Hotels Group website on www.royalcliff.com.

EAT ASIA Thailand’s Hottest Food Show You can say for certain that it was passion that created the new hit English-language food show, Eat Asia. Presented by journalist Natalie Scarr, 27, her excitement for Thai cuisine and ability to eat anything and everything is what is helping to make this journey through traditional food of the Kingdom such a hit. “For me, food is everything. So the chance to experience the heart of Thai cuisine with locals through Eat Asia is more than a dream come true. And the food? Too good for words to explain!” Natalie smiles. Thailand’s innovative food program Eat Asia launched on August 7, 2014. And it already has many international and Thai fans. Filmed exclusively in Thailand and bringing to life an incredible food sojourn, Eat Asia’s premiere season has a nine-episode premiere season which is aired over August and September 2014 and can be viewed on www.theitravelchannel.tv. “The food of Thailand is exquisite. So being able to share this with viewers is a fantastic feeling and I hope they will fall in love with it just like I have.” A new episode will be launched every Thursday evening at 8 p.m. on the iTravel website. This season Eat Asia travels to Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Samui on the ultimate food expedition. Natalie selects one dish
that represents the city, then finds out the dish’s origins, learns how to cook it the traditional way from Thai chefs then scouts out the best places to eat this specialty. For Bangkok the winning dish was pad kra pao, in Chiang Mai it was khao soi and finally in Samui, kaeng som. With a new episode released weekly, Eat Asia is fun as well as informative and honors local gastronomy. And the bubbly presenter says her multicultural background helped her land this role. “I was born in London, but grew up in New Zealand. My mother is Colombian and my father is English but grew up in Zimbabwe. Bangkok has been home now for nearly two years. I’m so proud I can be this crazy mix – it has helped so much to be able to enjoy other cultures.” Eat Asia as a concept came about in early 2014 because when filming travel shows for the iTravel Channel, Natalie had an addiction the creative director, Kirby Repolido, couldn’t help but notice. “Everywhere we went filming I was always tasting all the dishes and asking how they
were made. One day people even took a video of me eating fish tails and prawn heads – so Kirby decided it was only natural that we do a food show because this kind of passion couldn’t be faked,” she laughs. The bubbly brunette has been a journalist for seven years and explains that it was eating aptitude that also made her perfect for the job – downing everything from fiery chilies, fish eyeballs and snakes included! “My obsession for all food constantly surprises people – during filming there was some dishes the Thai chefs couldn’t eat because they were so spicy and they were laughing because I was eating away happily. My friends call me ‘Iron Stomach’ so this was the perfect show for me,” she laughs. Her passion originates from her family and a talent for cooking. “The
week before my grandmother died, she told my mom to make sure my brother and I ate international food because it gave insight into the world,” Natalie explains. “So when I was really young my mom and I would order chicken feet and the chefs would come out of the kitchen to see us because they were so shocked. And growing up we always had offal, chicken gizzards, or Colombian specialties like hot chocolate and cheese or deep-fried intestines.” But she says her love affair with food runs far deeper than just satisfying a craving. “For me, food gives the best memories and a link to your culture, your family, your history – your stomach! At the same time it’s instant. It tastes good – you feel good. I love that. It’s like a language too. You can care for someone by feeding them, or learn someone’s background from their food. It’s never-ending and evolving.” The idea behind the show is to show Natalie’s journey into true Thai food. She explains that they wanted her true curiosity to drive the show so that the end result was unscripted and natural. “We would literally show up and start filming. I was randomly fed by locals, held giant fish, cooked on the beach, burnt myself and
everything in between. The best thing was there was some incredible moments caught on tape that we never could have planned – meeting the grandson of the creator of khao soi, picking vegetables in the heart of Bangkok and closing the final shoot on a Bangkok rooftop with the most indescribable sunset.” Natalie also credits the quality of the show to the Eat Asia crew, creative director Kirby Repolido and cameraman, Syahrhino Putama. “They were incredible. We would be shooting 14 hours a day and one shoot the director had food poisoning and the cameraman was fasting on Ramadan – filming an incredibly delicious food show! But they kept working.” Now the show is gaining a big following, the journalist says she is so humbled and happy to just be able to share a slice of Thai fare with others and hopes to inspire others to enjoy local food and cooking it at home too. “Food is such a joy and sharing it with others is an international language that doesn’t need words. We are so excited to share Eat Asia with the world.” Eat Asia www.theitravelchannel.tv www.facebook.com/EatAsiaShow

Thailand Property Awards 2014 Eastern Seaboard Winners! This year’s Thailand Property Awards once again proved to be another spectacular event with last year being the first time the Gala Dinner had completely sold out in advance. This year we saw another full house sold out in advance of more than 500 guests, including the largest Eastern Seaboard contingency to date. All of the leading real estate agents, property developers, interior designers and architects from throughout the nation’s housing and condominium industry were in attendance at the Conrad Bangkok Hotel on September 11. The evening began with an entertaining reception, where you could enjoy fine wines and appetizers while mixing with the industry elite, including most of the top developers, designers and agencies in Thailand’s real estate industry. Following the wine reception and a delicious four-course dinner, which was pleasantly accompanied by a classical music quartet, the awards were presented. Without question these highly regarded and much sought-after prizes once again showed themselves to be the highest symbol of achievement that a company or an individual can aspire to in Thailand’s residential real estate industry. This year’s event was hailed as an outstanding success, owing to the efforts of its organizer, Terry Blackburn, CEO of Ensign Media Co., Ltd. In just eight years Terry and his Ensign Media team have created a cutting-edge awards venue. In each of those years, in every category, more and more entries have been submitted from around the country, enhancing the competitive nature of the contest.
“We received more than 1,600 nominations this year,” Blackburn reports, “from which more than 350 entries were chosen. The quality of nominations and entries was exceptional, pushing the bar ever higher, showing the growth and diversity of Thailand’s robust real estate industry.” Calling the gathering “a huge success,” the Ensign Media managing director said “it was good to see so many major players supporting our efforts. I was particularly pleased to have such an engaging keynote speaker as Director-General Naris Chaiyasoot of The Treasury Department, Thailand Ministry of Finance. “'The judging process was more rigorous than ever this year,” Blackburn added, “from having a central Bangkok panel make the initial short-lists and then regional judging teams undertake site inspections for the condo and villa categories.” As the final list of winners was delivered to the podium by Paul Ashburn of BDO, one of Thailand’s largest accounting and advisory firms, the largest contingency— those of us from the Eastern Seaboard— sat together excitedly looking forward to learning which of our entries might win. We soon learned that the Eastern Seaboard’s Best Villa Development Award went to The Vineyard, Phase Three, La Residence by Bravothai Lifestyles Co., Ltd. A proud and deserving Terry Collins, managing director of Bravothai Lifestyles Co., Ltd., accepted the award. Also receiving awards for the Eastern Seaboard’s Best Villa Development were the highly commended finalists Amaya Hill by Bravothai Lifestyles Co., Ltd. and Silk Road
Best Condo Development (Eastern Seaboard) Amari Residences by The Nova Group
Best Villa Development (Eastern Seaboard) The Vineyard, Phase Three, La Residence
Best Landscape Architectural Design Silverlake Vineyard & Winery
Place Pattaya by Better Home Development Co., Ltd. Next, the Eastern Seaboard’s Best Condo Development Award was presented to the iconic development company The Nova Group for its impressive Amari Residences condominium. Accepting the award were Rony Fineman and Kobi Elbaz. Highly commended finalists in that same category included the Centara Avenue Residence & Suites by Tulip Group, The Palm, Wongamat Beach by Nova Luxury Developments Co., Ltd. and Waterfront Suites & Residence by Tulip Group. The final Eastern Seaboard contender to take top honors was Silverlake Vineyard & Winery for Best Landscape Architectural Design. It competed against the Toscana Valley Co., Ltd. of Khao Yai, which last year won Best Residential Development
Khao Yai and Thailand’s Best Landscape Architectural Design. To everyone’s surprise the name announced for the 2014 Thailand Property Awards Best Landscape Architectural Design was the Silverlake Vineyard & Winery, and the Eastern Seaboard section of the ballroom was ecstatic. Accepting the award was Dennis Dila who could not have been prouder to receive the award. As you can see, the Eastern Seaboard stacked up some impressive wins. It makes one realize just how competitive Pattaya and the Eastern Seaboard have become--and continue to be--in Thailand’s residential and commercial real estate game. Bravo, Eastern Seaboard! Centara Grand Phratamnak Breathtakingly Stylish A few steps from a beautiful Jomtien beach, Centara Grand Phratamnak is a new luxury hotel at the southern end of greater Pattaya. Many call the Phratamnak area the Beverley Hills of Pattaya, while City Hall claims it will become a Thai-style French Riviera by the end of this decade. It is not for the budget traveller.

he Tulip Group are elite owners and developers of many hospitality constructions in Thailand and currently have five condominium projects and six upscale hotels under construction, working with local and international operators which include Centara Hotels and Resorts. Like other Centara projects in the resort, the hotel’s style and location has led quickly to it becoming a prime venue for high society and corporate events. Centara Grand Phratamnak recently hosted The Miss International Russia Thailand beauty contest final casting, a prestigious event of interest to many of the 136,000 Russians registered with Thai Immigration in Chonburi. The hotel can claim to have a very substantial

“wow” factor that is to ensure a positive consumer engagement with the Centara brand in the form of an absolutely unforgettable experience. The stylish design is the first aspect to strike the newcomer. There’s a magisterial marine-themed lobby – the shark aquarium is unique – extravagant Italian furnishing throughout and a pool and Jacuzzi on the rooftop. The hotel features 165 luxury-appointed guestrooms and suites with all expected facilities and some extras you don’t, including delicate cotton bedsheets. The underwater world theme from the lobby subtly pervades the whole hotel in both the public and private areas. Waves, bubbles, reefs, fish and shells are found blended into many of the architectural features. Blended light and glass throughout create the illusion that water and land have fused.

Oceana restaurant The first phase of Centara Grand Phratamnak opened in October last year. The second phase, which will include Club rooms, suites, expansive meeting facilities and a beach house with Spa Cenvaree, is scheduled to open in stages from this October. The acting general manager is Carl Duggan, a British veteran of the international hospitality industry with 27 years experience worldwide. Born in Guisborough, in what used to be Yorkshire’s North Riding, he became interested in cooking and baking in his pre-teen years and gained early experience washing up in a hotel kitchen when he was barely 14. Armed with a bachelor’s degree in the culinary arts and restaurant service from Harrogate College of Arts and Technology, he has worked in many hotels including 12 years in Hong Kong and over 10 in mainland China. A fluent Cantonese and Mandarin speaker, a most useful tool in view of the ever-increasing Chinese presence in Thailand, he was headhunted for his current post. “I first came to Thailand as a tourist in 1992,” he says, “although my first trip to Pattaya was in 2006. I had instantly fallen in love with the country, its people, its culture and its food, so having the opportunity to work here was indeed a dream come true.” He sees his role as providing authentic hospitality and exceptional customer care in the hotel, while helping to develop Pattaya as a high-end tourist resort for Thais and discerning international travellers. To judge from the overwhelmingly favorable reviews on the influential TripAdvisor website, he has made an excellent start. Centara Grand Phratamnak hosts the Ruffino Restaurant & Lounge which promotes itself as a haven for Italian inspired cuisine and comfort food. Located on the rooftop with magnificent ocean views, Ruffino offers a wide variety of dishes inspired by Italian flavors with a wine cellar which is the envy of many Italian restaurants. The all-day dining restaurant, Oceana, offers a chic and elegant environment along with a Thai-inspired menu with international flavors. The open kitchen offers guests a glimpse of the action, while the shark tank makes Oceana a uniquely exciting dining venue. The hotel in many ways summarizes the

In a competitive world, we aim to offer authentic hospitality and to exceed customer expectations in this vibrant and successful Pattaya City. changes which Pattaya has undergone in the past 15 years, and especially over the past 10. No longer a single-purpose, destination resort specializing in night life, the city has moved upwards and outwards to appeal to a growing number of expats, the new Thai middle class, high-income vacationers and a growing family-centred orientation. The city now boasts not only high-class accommodation and restaurants, but shopping malls and entertainment facilities to rival Bangkok itself. There are 20 golf courses within an hour’s drive of the hotel and family-centred fun is always expanding, most notably in the opening of the Cartoon Network Amazone water park. Centara Grand Phratamnak is part of the massive development which is Pattaya today. It has achieved much in its first year, but the second promises to be even more exciting and successful as the city continues to evolve and improve both its facilities and its image.

Legal & Expat Money
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Expat Money Corner by Tim Whiteley
Where do you put your money?
by: Magna Carta Law Office
Thailand Labour Law – Severance Pay What is severance pay? In addition to any other kind of money agreed by the employer to pay to the employee, severance pay is the compensation that an employer provides to an employee who has been laid off or terminated, whose job has been eliminated, who through mutual agreement has decided to leave the company, or who has parted ways with the company because the company can no longer operate its business or for other reasons. What is the rate of severance pay an employer is required to pay upon termination of employee without cause? When there is termination without cause, it is compulsory that the employer give a written notice and make severance payment to the employee according to the length of uninterrupted service, as follows: Period of Employment Rate of Severance Pay 120 days or more but less than 1 year 30 days 1 year but less than 3 years 90 days 3 years but less than 6 years 180 days 6 years but less than 10 years 240 days 10 years up 300 days This shall not apply to an employee whose employment is contractual or for a definite period and the employment is terminated at the end of that period. Employment for a definite period is allowed for employment in a specific project which is not the normal business or trade of the employer and requires a definite date to commence and end the work, or for work which is occasional with a definite ending or completion, or for work which is seasonal and the employment is made during the season. Such work shall be completed within a period not exceeding two years and the employer shall make a written contract with the employee at the beginning of the employment. What are the conditions wherein an employee shall not be entitled to receive severance pay? According to the Labour Protection Act, an employer may not pay severance pay to an employee when employment is terminated upon any of the following conditions: 1. The employee is performing his/her duties dishonestly and/or intentionally committing a criminal offense against the employer; 2. The employee is willfully causing damage to the employer; 3. The employee is committing negligent acts causing serious damage to the employer; 4. The employee is violating work rule, regulations, or lawful and just order of the employer after written warning has been issued by the employer, except for a serious case with no requirement for the employer to give warning; 5. The employee has not reported for work for three consecutive working days without justifiable reason regardless of whether there is a holiday in between; 6. The employee is being sentenced to imprisonment by a final court judgment. Will an employee be entitled to severance pay upon refusal to move with the employer to its new location? The employer is bound to inform its employees at least 30 days in advance of relocation. When the relocation of the employer’s establishment shall have a vast effect on the employee and its family’s way of living, the employee is entitled to refuse and terminate the contract of employment within 30 days of the relocation notice being received. In this regard, the employee is entitled to a severance pay of not less than the rate for which he/she is eligible. An employer who fails to inform an employee in advance of relocation shall be liable to pay the employee a special severance pay in lieu of advance notice in an amount equivalent to 30 days pay at the latest wage rate. What are the employee’s rights in case of unfair or wrongful termination? If the employee is required to leave his/her job immediately, the employer will be required to pay compensation in lieu of an advance notice equivalent to the employee’s wage to be paid until the effective date of the notice. However, this shall not apply to employees being terminated with cause. If an employee feels that he/she has been wrongfully dismissed and thinks that the employer violates with the employee’s compensation entitlement, the employee has the right to file a complaint to the Labour Office.

No one has a crystal ball and, equally, no one would pretend that the world’s stock markets are the most stable of places at the best of times; however, there was an old adage that, given 10 years, whichever of the main index tracker funds you selected, you would be better off than when you started, even if you bought at a peak and sold in a trough. There are still instances when this is true but, for example, using the MSCI, formerly Morgan Stanley Capital International index, which is often used as a common benchmark for world or global stock funds, had you invested in an MSCI tracker fund during August 2000, by August 2010 you would, a decade later, still be down; something almost unheard of previously. The general malaise of the markets, since the subprime debacle in the United States starting in 2006 has left many wondering where they can find any degree of predictability, away from all the downbeat news from Europe and the subsequent slowing down of the so-called drivers for the recovery of the world’s economies, such as China and India. With historically low interest rates, the banks offer little solace with interest rates unable to match even relatively low rates of inflation, let alone provide any growth. During this period, there has been a significant increase in funds set up covering niche sectors, capitalizing on the high level of demand that still prevails in such markets and the attraction is simply that. The proliferation of such funds is an indication that demand is mushrooming for alternatives that offer reasonable, consistent returns, with a high degree of security. When all is said and done, most of us want the same thing when looking for somewhere to place our nest egg; a reasonable return with little, or no risk! To be frank, that aspiration has always been a tricky match, however, the advent of specialist funds concentrating on arenas where high levels of demand can be seen well into the middle distance, has opened up a number of worthwhile possibilities with a genuine likelihood of fulfilling that promise. Our experience shows that around 95% of those who receive a 6%+ steady return are happy, particularly in these times. Those looking for higher profits should also remember another old adage which still remains true – ‘reward is commensurate with risk’. Actually, the fact is that many looking for more are young with 15+ years to waste aiming for bigger figures. For those of us that haven’t got that sort of time to throw away and require income, a secure 6% + is very attractive. There are several sectors enjoying the benefits of burgeoning demand in this developing market place and a number of well spread managed funds. Nonetheless, careful selection is still required. Of prime importance are the fund’s custodians (the safe keepers of investors’ money). It should be a major international bank. Also, who are the auditors? Again, we should be looking for major international firms. Then, there is the question of where is the fund domiciled; it should be a jurisdiction that is financially well regulated and has a correspondingly high degree of investor protection. Notwithstanding all of the above, everyone’s individual circumstances should be properly assessed by independent financial advisers, prior to making any decisions. What Our
Readers Say
Thailand’s elderly future
(Ken Sutherland writes) Thailand is one of many countries where a shortage of births is imperiling both economic and social futures across half the world. Population numbers have grown almost without interruption for the past 500 years. But no longer. Fewer and fewer children are being born every year and half the world now has a fertility rate below replacement levels. Fertility rates in Europe and US have been below replacement levels for 30 years already and are now respectively 1.6 and 1.8 (the minimum level for sustainability is 2.1). In Japan the rate is now 1.4, the worst rate in the developed world. Thailand now has 1.5. The main reason for these declines is income: the richer the country, the lower the fertility. About nine percent of the Thai population was over 65 in the year 2010, but by 2040 the figure will have risen dramatically to 25 percent. Women are getting married when they are older (shortening the birth-giving years) to spend more time in education and to follow careers. In Thailand today, women make up nearly half the working population.
Re-entry confusion Q: I am in Thailand for just under a month which is OK as I received a 30-day stamp on arrival at Suvarnabhumi Airport. I next to intend to go to Cambodia and expect to be there about 10 days. I would then like to return to Thailand for another three weeks before returning to the United States. However I have been told this won’t be possible as you cannot come back again under the new rules. Is that right? A: No. The new regulations are designed to stop people “living” and possibly illegally working in Thailand by repeatedly going on a visa run. This does not remotely describe you as a bona fide tourist. Although full discretion is now vested in the immigration officer on duty at the airport or border post, you should have no problem receiving 30 days on your second entry to Thailand. But keep your travel itinerary, that is your onward flight to US, in your pocket in case you are asked. Extension query Q: I am a British man who recently received 30 days on arrival in Thailand. I was expecting to receive only a 7 days extension at the local Immigration office but in fact was given a further month, i.e. 60 days in all, for a charge of 1,900 baht. I am worried in case a mistake has been made and I will get into trouble later on. A: It’s not a mistake. In late August the Immigration Bureau announced that nationals from 49 countries – who receive 30 days on arrival without further ado – will have their extension period upgraded from one week to one month. This is what has happened in your case and you have nothing to worry about. But you must leave the country within that time span. No more extensions! Retirement visa letter Q: I need a letter to confirm my income from the British Embassy in Bangkok. This is in connection
The obvious implication is that a smaller number of workers in the labor market will need to support a much larger number of ageing or aged persons with all that means for social services, especially hospitals and medical facilities which are becoming overstretched as matters stand. But Thailand can learn from other countries. Singapore has enhanced a package that provides support for the city state’s nationals in getting married and starting a family. The government there has set aside US$1.6 billion for government funded childcare costs and housing costs for married couples. In Australia, the government has funded assisted reproductive technology services since the 1990s through a universal insurance scheme. The government of Japan has recently taken new measures to fund matchmaking and dating services in the hope of encouraging more citizens to marry earlier and start having babies. What Thailand urgently needs now is serious planning for a social and economic revolution which is already upon the country. with my retirement visa renewal. As I am physically handicapped I don’t really want to face the journey even if it only takes one day. Also I am not keen to give a friend or an agent my permission to get the letter on my behalf as it means their taking my passport which I don’t like. Is there any alternative? A: You can apply by post, provided you can trust somebody to go to the letter box on your behalf! The embassy needs a copy of the ID page of your passport (no harm in copying the current visa page too) which should be signed. No need to send original passport. You also need to enclose bank statements or other documents to prove your yearly income in your first country. Also write a brief letter of explanation of what is your annual income, referring to your documentation to make matters clear. Don’t forget to include your return address and enclose some proof of where you live, for example a utility bill. As regards the charge, best to look up the embassy site under consular services as the details tends to change with the fortunes of the pound. Bird watcher quandary Q: I’m a Frenchman and I want to come to Thailand for a full year as I am writing a book on bird watching and need to do a lot of research in the jungles. If I bring a letter with me from the publisher, will the officer at Suvarnabhumi Airport give me more than the 30 days on arrival? I can get the letter translated into Thai if that will help. A: No, you will get 30 days. The right way is to approach the Thai embassy in Paris to request a long visa. It is up to them what documents you will need and what kind of visa they will award you, if any. It’s not clear from your letter if you will spend 12 months in Thailand alone or if you intend to visit other countries with a bird population within that time frame. Overstay again Q: Because I have been in hospital in Thailand after a heart attack, I will be about five weeks overstay visa when I finally leave the country on my delayed flight. Surely I don’t have to pay overstay when it is not my fault. I intend to take the hospital file with me to the airport. A: You will need to pay the fine (500 baht a day) irrespective of circumstances as neither the hospital nor any friends visited Immigration on your behalf prior to expiry of your visa. It’s too late now. Just pay up and smile. The only exceptions on overstay fines are the recently or long-term deceased!
Snap Judgment Ladyboys revisited The National Council for Peace and Order is making a sustained attempt to remove some of the abuses creating havoc in Thailand’s beach resorts. Already the army has moved into the deck chair and umbrella areas of Koh Samui and Phuket to create what many tourists see as a big improvement from the eyesore they used to represent. In Pattaya, the main emphasis to date has been on the ladyboy issue which appears to be a scapegoat for all the resort’s problems on beachfront areas. Nobody knows how many transgenders (with or without surgery) there are in the resort, but the total certainly runs into hundreds and maybe thousands. Some are not criminals by any stretch of imagination and are found working in hotels, restaurants, offices, hospitals and factories. So far so good. The problem is the considerable number of transgenders who don’t have a job and try to survive by performing sexual services for strangers or stealing from them or both. Sociologists will argue that this state of affairs largely reflects ongoing discrimination against minorities in employment, but the fact is that tourists are being robbed daily, sometimes violently, by transvestites acting alone or in groups backed by a getaway motorbike. The ingenuity shown by the cross-dressing gangs can be truly remarkable. Naïve tourists have even been taken to flats where one member of the gang is waiting under the bed to steal from male trousers which have been taken off during a tryst. The customer is then given a “free” ride back to town. His wallet will still be on his person, with banknotes and other goodies replaced by carefully folded bits of paper. Many prostitutes working alone or in pairs stand idly on beachfront areas as if waiting for the fruit to drop from the trees. They are sometimes described by the police as Coconut Ghosts. The current crackdown is not different in kind from previous campaigns to rid the resort of this alleged blight on its reputation. But this time around matters are more intense. Multiple arrests are made nightly, sometimes involving police volunteers and agents-provocateur, and some prostitutes are detained in the police station on several consecutive nights before being freed each time on payment of a small fine and after ID checks on the police computer. Presumably, the rationale behind the current crackdown is that the transgenders will become weary of constant harassment and give up. The number of tourists looking for sex with a transgender is not large. Mostly, the customers are naïve, curious or don’t even know that the woman they have picked up is actually a man. Many transgenders understand that reality which is why they have to rely on theft. Typically, this occurs after a stranger is approached and touched up before an attempt is made to grab his mobile phone, jewelry or wallet. The problem is substantial and has caused many foreign embassies to make official complaints to the Thai government. Ladyboys have long been a feature of Walking Street although the recent campaign has reduced the number to negligible proportions. Indeed, many will only venture there after the police checkpoints have been closed sometime after three o’clock in the morning. Many tourists actually see the ladyboy phenomenon as just another sightseeing opportunity: the visitor simply smiles to himself and moves on. Some visitors have even commented that they have found the ladyboys a positive feature of their visit to Walking Street. Given the resolve of the National Council for Peace and Order, coupled with the fact that Pattaya is trying to attract more high-end visitors, families and business corporations, it is virtually certain that Pattaya’s beachfront will be changed – and for the better most people will think. Transvestites will be driven to advertize themselves in the social media, as is already becoming the norm for heterosexual and homosexual contacts. Whether the beachfront changes will prove permanent or will last only as long as Thailand is ruled by the all-powerful military, is the central question which only time will tell.

It was a fine and sunny morning as we made our way to The Growling Swan in readiness for our monthly trip to the Crystal Bay Golf Club, and after a late withdrawal due to family illness and two late inclusions we were left with a healthy field of 29. We welcomed back our good friend Nolan Wise from Australia, Paul Moloney from his work in West Africa, Bill Hewitt and his lady Samorn Tamamsri from Pattaya, Vaughan Jackson and Dennis Jackson from Perth, Australia and Dave Corey from Queensland. It was time to say goodbye to another good friend, Marco Beer who will shortly be returning to Switzerland but will be back with us in a couple of months. All were on time so our two minivans departed the GS on schedule at 8:30 am, and after an excellent run north on Sukhumvit we arrived at the golf course just 41 minutes later. It was very quiet there so after check-in we presented ourselves to the starter who informed us that we would be playing the C and A nines in that order. We were invited to tee off at our leisure and our first four ball got away 15 minutes ahead of schedule at 9:45 am. The weather was perfect and with not a soul in sight ahead we proceeded at a fairly good pace and finished the first nine in a little over two hours. The course was in fine shape although the greens were somewhat multi grassed and bumpy but it did not seem to trouble several of the field who posted some good scores. I personally feel that many of us over-criticize some golf courses when we have not played very well therefore I will report that the course on the day was very entertaining. Slowing down on the second nine as it got hotter we managed
to complete a thoroughly enjoyable round of golf in four hours and 10 minutes. We had 3 divisions – division A for handicaps 0 to 15, division B for golfers on handicaps of 16 to 25, and division C for handicaps of 26 and over with three places in each division. There were also rewards for nearest the pin on the par threes and longest first putts on the A9 and C9 greens. “Buffalo” Bill Steinman finally found some form after a week off and was the winner of A division with a fine 40 points, just one point ahead of your writer Peter “Blacky” Blackburn in second spot with John Davis in third place after carding 38 points. The ladies did very well in B division where Samorn Tamamsri scored a terrific 42 points to win and with two golfers on 38 points a count back was required to sort out second and third places. The result was that Thientong Charoenrung (21-point back nine) won that particular encounter with her boyfriend Dave Neal (17-point back nine) who finished in third place. The division C winner was Andrew “Turtle” Allen with a steady 36 points and in another count back with two golfers on 34 points it was Russell “Stud” Calcutt (19-point back nine and 44 putts for the day) who got third spot from Sandy “Cyndi Lauper” Leiper (15-point back nine). Results: Division A – 0 to 15 1st – Bill Steinman (10) – 40 points 2nd – Peter Blackburn (12) – 39 points 3rd – John Davis (14) – 38 points Division B – 16 to 25 1st – Samorn Tamamsri (24) – 42
points 2nd – Thientong Charoenrung (18) – 38 points 3rd – Dave Neal (25) – 38 points Division C – 26 & over 1st – Andrew Allen (33) – 36 points 2nd – Russell Calcutt (33) – 34 points 3rd – Sandy Leiper (34) – 34 points NTP’s A5 – Dave Neal A8 – Geri Crilly C4 – Phil Taylor C7 – Paul Moloney LFP’s A9 – Takeshi Hakozaki C9 – John Davis The Growling Swan NAGA Award, (awarded to the golfer who has the worst score on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by visitor Dennis Jackson and he accepted the award like the good sport that he is. Andrew then kindly paraded Deefa the Dog and of course collected
many donations for the needy in Pattaya from our generous Growling Swan golfers. Back at The Growling Swan the beers were Aussie cold as usual and low-priced so many of us relaxed and stayed for quite some time reminiscing over another very fine day out. Growling Swan Golf, the home of friendly golf in Pattaya, welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low and high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays and Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8 am with transport departing at 8:30 am. For bookings or more information please contact Peter on 080 635 1386 or email to petermalcolmblackburn@gmail. com. We also play bowls out of The Growling Swan every Wednesday and Sunday. Sunday is lawn bowls and Wednesday is indoor bowls. All are welcome and for anyone that is interested the transport leaves The Growling Swan at 10 am on each of those mornings. The Tropical Bert’s group met for breakfast before heading out to Treasure Hill Golf Course. The group hasn’t played here in a while and everyone was eager to again play this challenging course and its signature Alligator hole. Treasure Hill is one of several courses going through maintenance and upgrades recently, and the results are excellent. The fairways are nice and the greens very lush – if maybe a bit slow for some people. This course is always challenging and if the Alligator doesn’t get you there is plenty of water and jungle to swallow your ball. Scores this day were on
the low side. No one broke handicap, and even points in the high 20’s were enough to secure a mention. Bob Watson always announces his departure and arrivals in style. Some weeks ago we wrote that he made his arrival back in Pattaya known by winning. Then Bob made sure we won’t soon forget him by winning the day before he returns home for a few weeks. Now Bob is back and guess what – everyone knows Bob is back because he won this day with a very respectable 35 points off his handicap of 4. Landis Brooks (7) gave Bob a run for his money by taking second place with 34 points, and third place went to Graham Buckingham (21)
with 30 points. To show how tough the course played, the fourth and fifth places each had 29 points, with Max Scott (5) winning on count
back over Don Carmody (26). Near pins: Andre Van Dyk, Don Carmody, Bob Watson, Landis Brooks

Local Sports Double Formula 3 victory again for Stuvik in Belgium Thailand’s 19-year-old racing ace showed again why he is one of the hottest young formula racing prospects on the European scene for the sixth round of the EuroFormula Open championship at Spa Francorchamps. Stuvik secured a dominant Pole position for the first race with a time of 2:15:001 which would be 0.749 faster that second placed driver Palou from Spain and over a second faster than Stern from Israel. Stuvik’s lap time was the fastest ever recorded at the Spa circuit with a EuroFormula Open specification Formula 3 car. Although the Phuketborn Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik felt confident before
the race, the weather was unstable and a slight rain began falling just as the race started. Having had a poor start, Stuvik found himself chasing Palou up the famous Eau Rouge corner and retaking the lead along the long uphill Raidillon stretch. The two drivers would go on to create a thriller of a race, with numerous excellent and clean overtaking maneuvers, as they fought for the lead. Midway through the race the rain got heavier in the back part of the circuit and Stuvik managed to pull away from the chasing driver. In the end the Thai driver took the checkered flag with a lead of 12.6 seconds to extend his championship lead considerably. Spain’s Palou
finished second and Russia’s John Simonyan third. For Sunday morning’s qualification it was again Stuvik who would claim pole position, this time in front of his teammate, Guatemalan Andres Saravia in second and Russia’s Konstantin Tereshchenko in third. Stuvik’s pole position lap
Bunker Boys at The Ranch by Geoff Parker
Bangpra G.C. (Stableford) There was heavy rain earlier in the morning in Pattaya and the sky was heavily overcast as we assembled in The Ranch bar, but our golfers were not to be deterred and we set off on the journey to Bangpra in optimistic mood. There was still very light drizzle falling as we completed registration at the clubhouse, but by the time the first group tee’d off, the rain had stopped and conditions were almost perfect. When we played here a couple of weeks ago the fairways were starting to look dry, but today following the recent rain they were green and lush again. The greens were not as vicious as they can be but were still tricky and perhaps more grainy than when they are at their quickest, which caught out several players on the early holes. The round progressed smoothly and was completed in good time with all four groups back in the clubhouse in a little over four hours. The scores were disappointing
given the ideal conditions, with Raleigh Gosney taking first place on 33 points, one point clear of Paul Smith and Geoff Parker who had to be separated on a count back. John Graham produced the shot of the day on the par three 8th hole, almost carding a hole-in-one as the ball rolled narrowly past the pin. At the presentation back at The Ranch, Tony Robbins was presented with the August Golfer of the Month trophy and duly rang the bell to refresh the thirsty golfers. (Stableford) In contrast to the previous few games which were played in overcast conditions, the weather today was bright and sunny when we arrived at the Treasure Hill course. The course was empty and we tee’d off at our leisure, with the prospect of another great day’s golf ahead of us on a truly testing layout. The course was in great condition at the moment, but the fairways were a little soft today following recent rain, and the problem we would face soon became evident as the group your scribe was playing in lost balls which pitched on the fairway on both the third and fourth holes. After five minutes of searching it could only be assumed that
time was 2:15:032, almost as fast as his best time from the first qualification. The race, which was broadcast live on TV in Europe and web streamed around the world, started at noon and although Stuvik’s car again bogged down on the start, he recaptured the lead by slipstreaming
early leader Saravia up the Raidillon straight and streaked away from the pursuing Formula 3 cars. Such was the Thai driver’s pace, that by the checkered flag he had built up a 13.2 second lead to second placed teammate Artur Janosz from Poland. Japan’s Yu Kanamaru would claim
the third step on the Spa podium. Stuvik now carries a commanding 241 points, towards Palou’s 196 and Janosz’ 179 points, as the championship moves to Italy and the Monza circuit for the penultimate round of the 2014 championship on September 26-28.
the balls had plugged and the frustrated golfers were forced to head back to the tee, truly a frustrating experience which fortunately doesn’t happen too often and is something the professionals never have to face with the presence of spotters. The first three ball were back in the clubhouse in under three and a half hours, but they had opened a three-hole lead after nine holes, and the following group were dismayed to see a six ball group sneak in ahead of them on the 10th tee, an all too familiar problem on this course. Fortunately the interlopers were in buggies and didn’t cause a hold up so everyone was back in the clubhouse in reasonable time. Paul Smith was the only golfer to play to his handicap and duly took first place ahead of Colin Greig with Gerry Cooney, who was playing his final game before his annual visit to the UK, coming in third place.

Emerald G.C. (Medal) Sponsored by KPK Foods Another bright and sunny morning as we headed down Sukhumvit Road to Ban Chang, and when we arrived at the clubhouse the course was once again quiet. Our field of 12 golfers was able to tee off at their leisure with no groups in sight ahead of them – the pleasures of low season golf! It’s fair to say that the course has improved significantly since our previous visit last month, with most of the newly re-turfed areas now well established, and only a few areas of GUR still remain, which were well marked. The greens were slower today but they were never easy, particularly on a medal round, when a misread of the grain and slope can prove very costly. Paul Smith was the only player who could match his handicap on the day, finishing two strokes clear of the recently returned Dave Ashman in second place. Paul has now collected two wins and a second place from the first three games of the month, which puts him

Our Community Return of a legend by Derek Franklin
Former world snooker champion Ken Doherty paid a second visit to the Father Ray Children’s Home to play pool against the children, and everyone, children and workers, were very excited to welcome him back to Pattaya. One little 10-year-old boy was so excited to be meeting Ken again, and also selected to play the first game against the former champion, that he was dressed in his lucky waistcoat when he came down for breakfast. Last year Ken had given this young boy a few tips on how to improve his game. Usually a lively boy who is full of energy and who never stops running around the Home, waiting to meet Mr. Doherty saw him turn into a nervous wreck whose legs almost turned to jelly as he presented a welcome garland. After a warm welcome, the older boys gave an exhibition
of Muay Thai before it was time to chalk the cues and break the balls. Mr. Ken, as he is now known to the children, proved he is a true gentleman by putting his opponents at ease, giving them a chance to pot a few balls, but also showing them why he is still one of the best players around; they were amazed at his skill. Ken Doherty left Pattaya to compete in the six-red snooker tournament in Bangkok before
Baan Jing Jai needs help by William Macey There are many orphans and abandoned children in and around Pattaya, a situation that prompted Piangta Chumnoi to open a small orphanage in 1997. Just a few children to start but Piangta cannot turn away any child that is in need of help and the numbers have increased steadily to 78, both young and a little older. The Beginning of a New Academic Year by Mr. Rob Cable, Mooltripakdee International School After an enjoyable and relaxing six-week summer break, class Year 3/1 at Mooltripakdee International School are feeling refreshed and are raring to begin the new school year! It is nice to welcome back so many familiar faces, as well as seeing a few new students join our school. The children, I’m sure, will be
excited about seeing their friends again and sharing their holiday experiences with the rest of the class. I too am looking forward to meeting my new students and beginning the year in a positive manner. A lot of the preparation work is completed before the academic year has even begun, so that a clear set
of learning objectives and teaching approaches can be established. This typically includes a weekly, termly and yearly plan, timetables, formative assessments, a letter of introduction and notifications to the parents, gathering resources, and finally, staff meetings. Staff meetings are very important because they
allow teachers to liaise with management and discuss any potential problems or concerns they may have in advance of the new term. They are also particularly helpful for teaching assistants, so that they are aware of their roles and responsibilities inside and outside of the classroom. I usually begin the year with some team building activities to familiarize myself with the children and bond with them to make them feel at home in their new classroom. We tend to discuss where we went and what we did in our holidays, which is always a pleasant and interesting speaking and listening activity. I also like to establish some classroom rules and boundaries, so that the children are very clear about my expectations of them, and also understand how important it is to create a safe and positive learning environment. Assessing the children’s ability, especially in English and mathematics is also imperative at the beginning
Generous GIS students help Pattaya library by Mark Beales Big-hearted students from Garden International School (GIS) have helped less-fortunate Pattaya children by donating their old books. To mark International Literacy Day, GIS Prefect John Caules organized several events. One was to encourage students to donate their old books, which were still in good condition, to charity. Dozens of books were handed in to the school library, and these will be passed on to the North Star
Library in Pattaya. John, who is studying for the International Baccalaureate Diploma at GIS, also made a PowerPoint to show every class the importance of literacy around the world. John said he was pleased with how many books had been donated, and added, “It was great to see generous GIS students donating their books to help other children in Pattaya. Not everyone has access to the excellent library and facilities that we have at GIS, so it was great to be able to help others.” The North Star Library
is a non-profit making project that is run under the umbrella of the Father Ray Foundation.

of the year. It enables me to create subject ability groups and differentiate the student’s work based on whether they can complete their exercises independently or whether they require extra guidance and support. It is useful to run some baseline assessments in maths, English reading, writing, spelling and speaking and listening. I also teach science and theme; however, these subjects tend to be more practical based and involve a lot of group activities. Good English literacy skills are required to complete the theory, investigation, history and geography exercises. Therefore, in my opinion, assessing these subjects is advisable, but not absolutely essential. Once the first week of the new term is successfully navigated, I begin teaching the Year 3 National Curriculum for England and Wales at the start of the second week. We complete some English literacy and mathematics exercises, as well as introduce our science and theme topics for the
first half-term. I also begin teaching PSHE (Personal Social Health and Economic education), Citizenship and SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning). These subjects are intended to help children grow and develop as individuals and as members of families and social and economic communities. They also equip children with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and practical skills to live healthy, safe, productive, fulfilled, capable and responsible lives. Our school philosophy at Mooltripakdee International School is to develop the children’s intellect and kind-heartedness, nurture a positive attitude and produce cheerful students, who are enthusiastic learners. As a teacher here, I always endeavour to fulfil this objective. I am now looking forward to completing another successful academic year at MIS. Rob Cable is Primary Year 3/1 teacher at Mooltripakdee International School.

You & Your Pets
Fun with Fido
by Roberta Peters Taking walks is probably the most common activity dog owners share with their pets, along with jogging, biking and even the occasional outing—driving to the countryside, going to the beach, camping trips, etc. Dogs usually enjoy such jaunts as much as we do, but it’s important to take some precautions. When out for walks on pathways, streets or the beach, remember that if the ground is too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for your dog’s sensitive paws, too. So chose an area with natural earth for walking or jogging, and arrange for such activities in the mornings or evenings, when Pattaya’s hot temperatures will not have an adverse affect on your panting pup. Also remember to keep fresh water handy both for you and for Fido. Will your furry companion
be unleashed on your outing? If so, be sure he wears a collar with current ID tags. If there are other dogs or children in the area, it would be a good idea to keep your pet on a leash. Wherever you choose to visit with your pet, have some plastic bags on hand to collect his waste. Before venturing on long runs, consider your dog’s health and age. If he’s young and just starting such activities, work up to longer runs. If he’s aging, keep a close eye on his breathing and allow him to set a comfortable pace. Dogs are social creatures that enjoy being included in your daily life, indoors as well as out. Even if he is kept in your enclosed yard, it’s important that you spend time with him every day. He
Cats for You in Pattaya
Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Contact Paul and Sandra on 0852875004 or look at their useful website http://cats4youinpattaya.webs.com/

This lovely Burmese girl chose to have her four babies at the Pattaya Today offices but transferred to us as foster parents. She is now neutered and is ready for a new home. A very friendly and loving pet for some lucky family.

should not be tethered or confined in a small kennel all day, and he must be provided with an area where he can find refuge out of the sun and rain, and with access to clean drinking water.
This fine little fellow came to us after a grim start in life outside an apartment complex. He has settled in with us quickly and is now one of the liveliest members of our extended cat family. He’s an affectionate kitten and has an inquiring nature.
Cat whiskers—not just hairy adornments
Know much about your cat’s whiskers? They aren’t just for decoration. Cat whiskers are two to three times thicker than cat hair, and they are rooted very deep in the cat’s face. Cat whiskers are your pet’s guidance system. Supersensitive nerves in each whisker help your cat judge distance and space so she knows if an entry hole is too small for her to fit and how high she
must jump to reach a tempting counter top. Ever notice how even blind cats can find their way around rooms? Their whiskers sense where they are spatially. The tip of each whisker has a sensory organ that picks up vibrations in the environment so the cat can detect what’s around her—including other cats, dogs and people. If you look closely you’ll see
whiskers rooted in the thick pads on the upper lip and smaller sets around her eyebrows, chin, and near her paws. Of course, those most prominent are on the sides of her nose; they are the same width as your cat’s body, enabling her to determine if a space is wide enough to squeeze through. Those facial whiskers, as you may have noticed, are not stationary. Muscles on the cat’s face move those whiskers back and forth. Their arrangement tells us—and other animals--how she feels. When relaxed, her whiskers extend straight out from the side of her head. When curious or on the hunt, the whiskers move forward. And when scared, they will be pinned back. Word of warning: Never trim a cat’s whiskers. Without them, the cat would be unable to identify the environment, leaving her disoriented and frightened.

Raggy
Sadly this small kitten lost his mom to an angry dog in a close down restaurant in Jomtien. He managed to stay hidden to escape death and his cries were heard by a kindly Russian couple. He is now doing well and will soon be ready for adoption.
Magic
This little lovely was rescued from a market roof after her mom was frightened away. She was only a few days old at the time and her eyes were still closed. But she is now almost ready for a new and safe home to enjoy her life with you.
Cat Corner Tip by Dr. RJ Peters to Pattaya’s cat lovers
Most cats don’t like to take pills and can be very difficult about it. If your cat needs medication or vitamins, here’s a tip that may help: Crush the tablets or empty the powder or liquid out of a capsule. Mix it into a small amount (1-2 tablespoons) of the cat’s favorite food. If they don’t like canned food, try tuna “juice” or gravy. Don’t mix their medication or vitamin dose into the full serving of food, as they may not eat it all. This is easier to do with vitamins, of course, as medications usually taste very bad and may ruin the flavor of their food. Dr. Peters is the author of three informative and entertaining books about household pets: Our Amazing Cats, and Our Amazing Cats Vol. 2, now available from Amazon Books and at www.ouramazingcats.com, and her newest book, Our Amazing Dogs. To download ebook versions of any or all three books (about 200 baht each), go to http://youniquesolutions.com/3Books. html. Dr. Peters’ free newsletter, The Kitty Times, is available at http://www. theproblemcat.com.
