Compensation Sought for UK Passport Delays A British House of Commons committee is demanding that British citizens who ended up waiting for three months or more for a new passport should be financially reimbursed. The Passport Agency in UK struggled with 550,000 applications last June and the committee says that many British citizens were left stranded and unable to travel. The MPs also complained that Passport Agency staff had received large cash bonuses in spite of the chaos. Part of the problem was and is that full passports can no longer be issued anywhere in the world except the UK as part of a money-saving initiative to cut staffing by closing some consular sections in embassies abroad. The system is particularly complicated in Thailand where applicants now have to make a personal appearance (or appoint an agent) at Trendy Office in Bangkok, at a time agreed by officials, to hand in and later collect their new passport after the paperwork has been forwarded to UK. In some other countries, postal applications are acceptable but not in Thailand which is believed to have more than its fair share of problems including inadequate or even fake documentation. Currently, the British embassy website is suggesting a two months’ waiting period. Keith Vaz, the House of Commons committee chairman, said “HM Passport Office should lose its agency status and be brought back under direct ministerial control following this appalling series of failures.” He added that there had been a shamefully poor service to an estimated 5.6 million British citizens living abroad. The MPs emphasized that they were particularly concerned that many people
were out of pocket, forced to abandon travel plans or rebook air tickets. Several British applicants in Thailand even made a special trip to UK to take advantage of a supposedly fast-track upgrade there by paying a cash supplement. It is also known that the long delays meant that some British retirees, holding oneyear visas in Thailand, were unable to process their applications in time at Thai Immigration and were forced to leave the country. Another serious problem has now arisen after the Foreign Office website suggested that some people might like to extend the life of their current passport by 12 months rather than be trapped in the long waiting list. It has now emerged that some countries will not recognize such an extended passport. They include
popular destinations such Australia, China, India, the United States, Cyprus, Turkey and the World Cup host country Brazil. The government has now admitted that only 50 countries out of nearly 200 have actually confirmed they will accept extended passports. Vaz commented, “The figures we have reveal that the closure of overseas posts has caused a significant increase in applications. The decision was clearly a wrong one and has been badly managed. The public has been badly let down.” Theresa May, the British home secretary, claimed that only 11 percent of passport applications were taking longer than three weeks to process and added that her officials were still working with foreign Continued on page 6

TAT courts Russian market The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) used Russia’s top travel trade show last month to launch a strong effort to diversify the choice of Russian visitors’ popular destinations beyond Pattaya, Phuket and Samui. The new destinations highlighted include Chiang Mai, Hua Hin, Krabi, Koh Chang and Rayong. In addition, TAT will be seeking to raise the interest of the Russian travel trade in new products such as health and wellness and Chic Travel Thailand. The 200 sqm Thai booth at the OTDYKH International Russian Travel Market included a Thai massage demonstration area and a special section for medical tourism products. TAT headed a delegation of 22 Thai tourism business operators to the OTDYKH-Leisure. The most important travel trade event for the Russian market and CIS countries was organized by EUROEXPO in cooperation with the Federal Agency for Tourism of the Russian Federation and Association of Russian Tour Operators. Thailand has been participating in the show since 1995. This year’s presence is particularly important because it is an important part of the Thai recovery campaign for the second half of 2014. Russian visitor arrivals will be crucial to this overall recovery. Commenting on the Russian marketing effort, TAT Governor Thawatchai Arunyik said, “We now need to get the word out that Thailand is now back to normal and ready to welcome visitors. At our Thailand’s Best Friends Forever Mega Fam Trip and Happiness Street Festival on July 25, we were pleased to see a strong turnout of many specially invited Russian media and travel trade representatives. The critical step now is to convert that positive publicity into bookings for the upcoming last quarter of 2014 and beyond.”

Thawatchai said that the core of the tourism marketing and promotion activities highlight the “Thainess” theme as the unique selling proposition. Other trends from the Russian market include a growth in bookings being made online, more tour operators offering combined destination packages with other Asian countries, and increased use of social media networks, especially via smartphones. In 2015, the TAT Moscow Office has been assigned to organize a project “Wanderlust Russian” that will allow Russian visitors to share their experiences through social media, learn more about niche market products such as spas and luxury travel as well as help each other recommend attractions and activities. They can also find a list of tourism business operators in Thailand.

Following a claim by a Scottish tourist that he had been hit on the head and his belongings stolen, two local men reported to police that they had been in a fight with the tourist but had not stolen anything. Supphakorn and Nitisart stated
that they had been summoned by a lady friend, Sutatta, because she feared being attacked by the Scottish tourist, Stuart Page, and his farang friend, following an argument. Supphakorn explained that they had intervened in a bid to protect
Sutatta and this is why one of the tourists ended up with a wound. However, they went on to say that they had not stolen anything as reported by at least one TV channel. Police inquiries are continuing.

A beggar is a chooser
A German man who has been beginning on Pattaya streets has actually been spending the donated cash in nightclubs. An association devoted to helping destitute Germans took him to a hotel and contacted the man’s embassy. But local media discovered that the man was drunk several times and even paying for staff drinks in go-go bars. The case has attracted a lot of attention on Facebook where Benjamin Holst, 29, is known as “bigfoot farang beggar” because of a deformity. He is believed to have received donations to the tune of 40,000 baht and did not turn up for a scheduled appointment at the German embassy. The owner of a house in Rattanakorn Village, Nongprue, returned home to find that thieves had broken into his house and stolen the safe containing 50,000 baht in cash and various other expensive or treasured items. Although he had installed a CCTV system, the robbers had covered it with a towel before cutting window locks and gaining entry to the bedroom. A neighbor did see a group of three men and one woman carrying away the safe but assumed it was an ordinary house move. However, the neighbor did also have a CCTV system which clearly showed the identity of the alleged criminals. Armed with this vital information, police said that arrests would follow soon.
Garbage truck hit from behind Woman commits suicide by fire
Two men were sent to hospital after their Toyota MPV struck a city garbage wagon which had just parked on Second Road, near the Hotel Tropicana Pattaya. The truck driver, Sombat Kamjad, said it was normal procedure for his truck to move slowly and to stop regularly while team members collected rubbish along the way. He suddenly heard a bump and had no idea why the Toyota driver had not taken evasive action. The two car occupants, both Thai nationals, were said to be comfortable in Banglamung Hospital but still shaken.
Police discovered the cremated body of a female in a burntout car in a cassava field near Khao Chee Chan. It was discovered that the deceased was Pittasnan Darsing, 44, who had been a hospital patient suffering from mental problems. A woman asked for police assistance at a gas station in North Pattaya after she escaped from a dangerous situation in a van. countries to accept the extended passport as an acceptable document for entry. Pattaya has its fair share of expats who became caught up in the passport chaos. 70-year-old Dan Walker said, “When I applied for a new passport last April, you could not even appoint an agent and I am physically handicapped. I had to pay for a taxi to go to Trendy Office, struggle up the stairs, cope with the lift and then discover there was a long queue even though I had my appointment letter with me. My passport took 13 weeks to process by which time I was on overstay and
had to pay a large fine at immigration. I think it is scandalous the way embassy services have been trounced just to save money in London.” British citizens in Thailand needing to renew their passports or who have lost their current one are advised to read the British Embassy Bangkok website very carefully and to follow the detailed regulations therein. The slightest mistake can lead to further delays. However, the British Embassy can still issue emergency travel documents for those without a valid passport who need to leave the country in a hurry.

Bangkok was recently named one of the 11 best destinations in the world for shopping by the renowned travel website, Frommers.com, with the city’s range of markets and malls being singled out for praise. Eleven cities, including Cairo, London, Istanbul, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Paris, have been designated as the world’s best for shoppers. The 11 were chosen not merely for having the widest range of goods and great bargains, but for ensuring that shopping offers an interactive experience, with atmosphere, history and local color, as well as sights, sounds, smells and traditions to enjoy. Bangkok was praised for its malls and outdoor markets with bargains galore, for its range of food and textiles in Pratunam and for the ancient floating markets like the one at Damnoen Saduak. The famous floating markets have long been known for fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers and are a symbol of Bangkok’s tourism industry. Special mention was given to the Chatuchak Weekend Market and its 15,000 stalls selling everything from antiques to clothing and household goods.
Frommer’s, one of the world’s most respected names in the travel industry, has been publishing travel books since 1957 and now boasts over 350 guidebooks and a well-known website, famous for offering impartial and upto-date information on popular destinations, hotels and restaurants all over the world. Thawatchai Arunyik, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said, “It is a great honor to have been included on this prestigious list; after all, some of these markets have been visited by travelers and traders for centuries – literally in the case of cities such as Istanbul and Cairo. “That Bangkok’s markets are so well known internationally is testament to our huge variety of shopping opportunities. From cool malls with the latest tech, to age-old village and canalside markets, there is something for everyone, and our weekend market at Chatuchak is known the world over for its thousands of shops selling bargains galore. With new stalls, markets and malls opening all the time, Bangkok looks set to be the must-visit city for shopaholics the world over.”

Road surfacing begins Storm leaves vendors flummoxed on Second Road
Mystery suicide in hotel Police are still investigating the death of German national Peter Hans-Jurgen Stockmar, 70, who was found dead on his bed with knife wounds at a guest house on Central Pattaya Road. Investigators are satisfied this is a case of suicide as the man had cut wrists and there was no evidence of a struggle or of a theft. Hotel staff said that the tourist had checked in last July and had been a regular beer drinker at the hotel bar. However, the hotel maid used a duplicate key to enter the room after the man had not been seen for a couple of days. She soon realized that there was a corpse on her hands and at once notified the authorities. Speculation suggests that the German was very stressed or heartbroken, or maybe he had a dread disease. The body has been sent for autopsy.

The Pattaya Engineering Office has begun resurfacing Second Road in an attempt to create a smoother side for vehicles whose occupants are currently all shook up. In the meantime, City Hall has apologized for the traffic jams and general inconvenience which are inevitable if progress is to be mad.
Beach vendors on Pattaya Beach Road, Sois 1-5, complained to City Hall that their business was ruined after a sudden gusty wind and downpour flooded the area where they set up their stalls and umbrellas. Local authority officials promised to solve the problem as soon as possible.
Murdered man dumped in canal
A tragedy occurred at a repair shop after a staff member accidentally touched a live wire which resulted in a massive electric shock. Sanga Kulmuanoi, 38, was dead on arrival at hospital. Colleagues said that Sanga was a competent official and that the whole matter was a very unfortunate accident.
An unknown Thai man, probably in his late 30s, was hit with a solid object which crushed his skull before being thrown into a Naklua canal. Police said he had a broken neck and had been in the water face down for about six hours. A resident of the area said the dead man had been living in a temporary shelter near the canal with another man known only as Dam. But the resident, Boonruen Siriwan, 43, added that in the last day or two she had seen only Dam. However, police later confirmed they had arrested a suspect at a disused gas station only 500 meters from the death site. Porn Sonsamlee, 42, allegedly said he was a drinking companion of the dead man but that they had had a furious argument leading to the victim’s death.

SIAM @ SIAM
Friday and Saturday Night’s Fine Seafood Barbeque is now even better with the addition of Fine de Claire oysters and the finest imported lamb
This remarkable new hotel is situated on Second Road, Pattaya opposite Big C. It is the home to a beacon of light in the form of a lighthouse which shines brightly across the Pattaya night sky while a traditional Thai temple bell takes pride of place at the highest point of the building. Intriguing architecture and there’s more to come. The opening words from their brochure sets the scene for the experience at Siam @ Siam Design Hotel, “Find your style – be inspired – experience authentic eclecticism through vibrant spaces with quirky touches.” This remarkable pleasure dome oozes, screams and shouts with raw industrial design and vibrant colours inspired by modern
pop art, folklore and fantasy. Eclectic imaginings of a visual artist have been inspirational in creating a modern art gallery hotel which houses 268 guestrooms and suites. Mick and I visited when the hotel opened last year and were back to enjoy their weekend seafood BBQ in the Big Fish restaurant. Enter the lobby and you will truly be gob-smacked by this idiosyncratic hotel. Drawing on their rich motoring heritage of the founding Phornprapha family, cars are inspirational in their design as is the ocean and its fishy inhabitants. The Car Bar on the ground floor reveals surprises at every turn, jeeps, rickshaws and even a suspended
flying car form the decorative element while exotic molecular cocktails and traditional Thai snacks (with a twist) are given the inimitable Siam @ Siam Pattaya stamp. Take the lift to the 6th floor and on exiting you are thrown headfirst into the fantasy world of the ocean; jelly fish lamps hang from the ceiling, a fish tail forms the bar with those industrially conceived elements of naval ships and submarines all vying for your attention. It is here on Friday and Saturday nights that they hold their Weekend Fire Seafood & Barbeque Night. The executive chef here is Chatree “Long” Wongsriphaisan who gained his culinary training at the famous Oriental in Bangkok before moving on to even more of the premium, fine dining establishments in the capital. This twice-nightly buffet has already gained a faithful following and with the addition of even more luxury items will undoubtedly gain more. Pricing has been kept delightfully cost effective at only B.555 net and B.799 net if you wish to add free flow. These are extraordinary prices for the quality of the produce that is available, especially when we tell you that Fine de Claire oysters have now been added to already sumptuous fresh seafood items. Dinner starts at 6 pm (until 10 pm) and we were fully aware that every food item was constantly replenished throughout the evening, yes, even those expensive babies, the French oysters.
Explore all those pots and chafing dishes before commencing your foray into the delights of buffet dining. The freshest seafood: mussels, crabs, jumbo prawns, squid and of course those oysters languish on their icy trays awaiting your selection. If you wish you can select uncooked shell fish and request that they are cooked directly under your supervision. Sparkling pink salmon, mackerel fillets, chicken skewers, Wagyu beef and various cuts of lamb all await to be handed over the chefs at their live cooking stations. Move on then to the chafing dishes which contain red duck curry, chicken cordon bleu, fried pork, pan-fried sea bass, vegetables in oyster sauce, green curry and more. The salad section offers a myriad of vibrant ingredients, spicy Thai salads to ignite the taste buds such as beef salad with chili paste and lemon grass, wing bean topped with boiled egg, big, juicy vine tomatoes with creamy mozzarella cheese, Parma ham and melon the choices are daunting. Pasta lovers should round to the open kitchen where a selection of spaghetti, angel hair, penne and fettuccini can be custom
ordered with a choice of bolognaise, carbonarra or aioli sauces. Once sated with savouries you can then indulge your sweet tooth with the likes of chocolate mousse, creamy panna cotta, fresh fruit, pastries and the piece de resistance of all desserts – crepe suzette flambéed with Cointreau and topped with vanilla ice cream. Don’t leave without experiencing The Roof Sky Bar on the 25th floor. Open air movies can be enjoyed with picnic-style nibbles on The Roof’s Mixology upper deck. View classic black and white flicks to features from independent film makers and also best of Oscar winning classics. Siam @ Siam is an unexpected, astonishing, bizarre and sometimes weird experience but one you should visit. The Weekend Fire Seafood & Barbeque nights on Fridays and Saturdays offer some of the best value buffets in town and you owe it to yourself to call in soon.

LE BISTROT 89
Puts the “Ooh, La, La” into the “Dark Side” Have you noticed the nascent trend of new restaurants springing up over the railway line on the affectionately called “dark side”? We reviewed the latest one in the last issue – the excellent Suggestions Restaurant. It was on this journey to Edwin Lorman’s new establishment that we spotted Le Bistrot 89 and stopped to look at the menu. Two days later we were seated in this small, homely hangout enjoying plates of garlicky frog’s legs and a tasty, earthy cassoulet bursting with flavour. We were so impressed we were duty-bound to go back and spill the haricots to let you all know about this serendipity of an eatery. As the name implies it is situated on Soi 89 off Sukhumvit Road – see the end for detailed instructions. The powerhouse in this kitchen is Weena who not only cooks a wonderful French menu but also has a loyal following that come to enjoy her traditional Thai food. Married to a French Master Baker, they travelled Europe together spending much of their time in Barcelona and the south of France. Now back in her homeland
she decided to open her own bistro and that decision brought about the birth of Le Bistrot 89. Weena offers all-day dining opening her doors at 10 am until 3 pm for breakfast and lunch and then 6 pm till 10 pm for dinner. The lunch special is only B.200 which includes homemade tomato soup, ham and cheese crepe with salad, ice cream or an espresso coffee. The décor here is bistro to its core, red checked tablecloths, cosy red
lighting with posters and pictures of La Belle France draping the walls. With seating for 35 people the atmosphere positively buzzes with neighbourliness and bonhomie. To kick off the proceedings, Mick immediately plumped for the house pate de campagne or country terrine (B.90) while I found the duck liver salad winking at me. Other starters that took our eye included shrimps baked in olive oil with garlic and parsley (B.150), poached free range eggs with salad and bacon, egg mayonnaise with tomato and basil (B.90), those frog’s legs or an interesting combination salad of cucumber with fresh cream, mint and coriander. Come “avide” (hungry) to this eatery as the portions are extremely generous. The pate de maison is a true rustic affair redolent with pork, liver and bacon - the mixture was delicious. Served on a charcoal grey slate with cornichon and home made pickled onions it was a star dish. The duck liver salad was equally as good; doused in the bistro’s home made vinegar it was a rich lush dish loaded with earthy flavours. Accompanied by the crunchiest, traditionally-made, baguette we have eaten in some time it was all very nicely done indeed. Enjoyed with a pitcher of house wine (75 cl for B.480) we were more than happy to be enjoying the Bistrot 89 experience. The great French classic, Boeuf
Bourguignon is the speciality here and so it was de rigueur that this was included in our ordering, plus that other great gastronomic dish from Gascony, confit de canard. The Burgundy beef (B.230) was a hearty, full bodied dish of strong flavours bursting with an array of vegetables and potatoes that had been baked in red wine leaving the beef so tender as to make a knife redundant. The duck was crisply flavourful as required with this slow-cooking method and the accompanying
apple pie, baked bananas or ice cream and even the fromage plate of blue cheese couldn’t tempt us – we were just to replete with all those wonderful, nourishing dishes we had tucked away. If you were around in the 1960s, you will remember those little bistros that sprang up around the country. Remember the daily changing menus scrawled on blackboards, candles in Chianti bottles, swiggable wine in carafes all served in a friendly, warm and casual atmosphere. Such
sautéed potatoes were a joy; soft and slightly caramelised with the addition of garlic and spring onions they had been sautéed with the lightest of hands. Pork chop with a cream and mustard sauce, braised fillet of duck breast, chicken with a cream sauce and the house quiche Lorraine are all recipes of long standing and presented here in the traditional manner. I have to admit we passed on dessert even though they were featuring lemon meringue pie that night or the a la carte items of warm
a bistro is Le Bistrot 89. Come here for delicious, traditional French fare served at exceedingly reasonable prices and discover for yourself how the “ooh, la, la” has been brought to the “dark side”. Le Bistrot 89 Open daily except Sunday from 10 am till 3 pm and then 6 pm till 10 pm Soi 89 off Sukhumvit Road (opposite Makro), about 300 metres past the railway line on the right-hand side Tel: 08 79 71 1192 www.facebook.com/lebistrot89 Take away service available.

Laser treatment helps restore youthful appearance by Thonglor Clinic
Time always takes its toll on our appearances. Either we become more wrinkly, gain too much weight or start to sprout different skin tags on our body. It is never too late to take action. The worst thing we can do is ignore these problems. Unattractive skin tags can be removed with the aid of laser technology without leaving unsightly scars. The doctor will examine you during a free consultation to assess the best way to approach your special needs. Lasers also have a rejuvenating effect on the skin and can improve early changes. If your masses appear to be more like some skin cancers, then an appointment with the surgeon may be in order. Caucasian skin is more easily damaged by the effects of the sun; all sorts of changes can then be encountered. Asian skin is more subject to developing melasma or to have some scarring post acne. Lasers and rejuvenating products will help to resurface the skin and reduce the depths or severity of old scars. These laser treatments have to be repeated in some instances if the skin lesions are severe. Thonglor Clinic has a special laser that targets colored skin lesions and blood vessels. It can be used to remove liver spots and small red veins that often appear around the nose. This laser can also be used to treat small varicose veins. These capillaries can be zapped away with no scarring. Lasers come in different wave lengths and are used to treat multiple skin conditions. If you are wondering if it is for you, please make an appointment for a free consultation. Just don’t ignore the problem…it won’t go away on its own. Unwanted fat deposits too stubborn to disappear with exercise can be removed with the help of liposuction. This is not a weight reduction method, more a body reshaping intervention. Many
older men present large breasts that make them uncomfortable to be seen on the beach without a shirt. These can be markedly reduced in size and shape. Lower abdomen aprons can also be reduced by up to 4 kg in one session. With our female patients we have to deal more with reshaping saddle bags and ventral fat deposits. Arm circumferences can also be reduced by this procedure. It can reduce the ‘bat-wing’ effect on the arm area. Another area that can be targeted is fatty chins and double/triple chins that some of us sport. This quite often is combined during a facelift operation. Liposuction can be performed in the clinic with some light sedation and the use of saline laced with local anesthetic to make it painless. It is called “tickle lipo” as the feeling is more like a tickling effect when the fat is aspirated out. Wearing a support bandage post operatively allows the skin to resume its place without sagginess. Some bruising is present for one week after the procedure and then a firming effect takes place during the healing process. There is no down time as most people resume their normal activities almost the same day. Only a slight preparation is required medically. The patient must not take aspirin medications or other blood thinning products for one week prior to the procedure. Blood tests are conducted also prior to the surgery to rule out any other underlying problems. Our staff will be glad to answer any questions you may have before making your decision to rediscover the new you! The cold season is the best time to tackle these issues as the beaches are not as much the focus of our daily activities. Take control of your life and your appearance now! Tips for safe driving in the rainy season by City Automobiles
City Automobiles, Jaguar Land Rover’s authorized distributor in Thailand, understands that driving in the rain can be time-consuming, frustrating, challenging, or even risky under certain conditions. Here are some tips to help all motorists drive safely with incident-free progress through Thailand’s season of damp weather. Preparation • Wipers: Your windshield wipers must function well and the wipers must have blades of good quality and in good condition. Windshield wipers are an utterly essential and sometimes overlooked automotive part that results in good visibility, and therefore, good decision-making. If your wipers have not been used for some time, apply some white vinegar to a lint free cloth and run it up and down the rubber; this will remove road grime and improve contact with the windshield. If your wipers still fail to clean the screen, renew them at your local dealer. • Lighting system: Check your car’s headlamps, tail lamps, turn signals, warning lights, backup lighting and all ancillary lighting components carefully. You will need better visibility when driving in the rain, even in the daytime, as it makes other drivers aware of your position and intentions. If you’re going on a long journey in wet conditions,
wipe your headlights and tail lights clean with a piece of cloth when you stop for fuel/refreshments to maintain visibility. • Tyres: If your tyres are not able to grip the road surface properly, the risk of accident increases massively. Choose appropriate all-weather tyres for your car, and increase the pressures by 2-3 foot-pounds per square inch (0.1-0.2Bar) higher than usual (don’t forget the spare!). This makes the tyre surface rigid and enables the water-clearing function of the tyres to work more efficiently. If your tyre treads are below 3mm, this can dramatically reduce grip when braking. If in any doubt about the condition of your tyres, please consult your local dealer. • Battery: For a number of reasons, your car uses more battery power when driving in the rain. Ensure the car battery is in good condition and all electrical systems are functioning well. • Accessories: Ensure that you carry spare fuses and bulbs in case of a failure. Additional items can be sourced from your local dealer.
Safe Driving in the Rain • Do not change lanes aggressively or drive too fast. Drive below 60 km/h over broken or rough tarmac, or on surfaces which are slippery due to an excess of surface water. Try to avoid sudden or large steering inputs where possible. • Keep a minimum 10-15 meters (at city speeds) of distance from the car ahead so you can stop in time in case of an unexpected event – you will need much more distance to stop in the wet. If a vehicle cuts in front of you, ease back and re-establish the correct distance. • If you cannot avoid flooded areas, be prepared for sudden misting up of the interior windscreen and side glasses due to increased moisture in the air. Press the ‘recirculation’ button to help reduce this occurrence. Always carry a piece of cloth in the car to clean the inside glass should misting occur. • Observe water depth on the flooded roads ahead by looking at cars or footpaths in front of you to gauge driving conditions. Be prepared for the car to ‘pull’ left or right if a patch of deeper water is encountered at speed. • After driving on flooded roads, drive at a slow speed and repeatedly step on the brake (when safe to do so) to dry the brake discs and pads. • In cases of severe rain where visibility is below a couple of meters with the wipers on full speed, just stop on the roadside (in a safe location) and wait for the rain to stop or lessen. If stopped at the side of the road, leave your lights on and turn on your hazard lights to warn other drivers of your presence.

Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show drives marine leisure tourism in greater Pattaya Organisers predict biggest boat show yet with top luxury yacht and lifestyle brands showcasing The third annual Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show is set to welcome record numbers of guests and exhibitors from 27th to 30th November at Ocean Marina Yacht Club, Jomtien. Kicking off the Asian boat show season, Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show promotes greater Pattaya and Thailand as a leading marine hub of Southeast Asia. “This is just the third year of the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show and already awareness of the show amongst the marine industry here in Thailand and overseas, and amongst the general public, is fantastic,” said Supatra Angkawinijwong, deputy managing director of Ocean Property, organisers of the show. Over 100 exhibitors and in excess of 6,000 visitors are expected at the show this year which, with its expanded four-day format and 12,000 sqm of in-water and onshore display space
has, in a short space of time, grown to become an important annual showcase of marine and luxury lifestyle in Thailand. Commenting on the growth in exhibitor numbers this year, Angkawinijwong said, “We've had such a great response from exhibitors in Thailand and Asia, and with 12,000 sqm of total display area this year the show will be the biggest yet.” Leading luxury boat brands from around the world are exhibiting, including Princess Yachts and Cranchi, as well as boat builders and accessories, boat services and technology, marine toys and gadgets, super bikes and cars, luxury real estate and resorts. Thailand's first solar assisted luxury power catamaran, the Heliotrope 65, will be showcased in Asia for the first time by Bakri Cono while leading luxury auto marques Rolls Royce and Aston Martin will headline the onshore
display. In addition to the exhibitors, new for this year is the International Fishing Boat Competition (29th and 30th November) and the Boat & Yacht Thailand 2014 Conference (28th November). Other highlights include free yacht cruises, kayak and paddle boat experiences, open-air drinks and food festival with live band, jetpack flying board and radio control power boat demonstrations, games and much more. Geographically located within five hours (or less) travelling time of major Asian population centres, Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show is well positioned to leverage the growing affluence in Asia. According to the 2014 edition of The Wealth Report, the number of UltraHigh Net Worth Individuals (those with US$30 million in assets excluding their main residence) in Asia has

With such wealth in the region, Ocean Marina, in tandem with the Tourism Authority of Thailand, is promoting Pattaya tourism and through the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show continues to grow the marine leisure tourism industry and reinforce the image of Pattaya as an upscale tourism destination. “Pattaya tourism continues to go from strength-to-strength and its coastline is one of the biggest attractions for domestic and international visitors. Ocean Marina is at the centre of Pattaya's marine tourism
and the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show helps to attract more high-end tourists, positioning Pattaya and the Gulf of Thailand as the leading marine leisure destination in Southeast Asia,” said Pataraporn Sithivanich, TAT executive director for Tourism Products Department. Statistics from Ocean Marina underscore this trend with tourists through the marina in 2013 up 32% year-on-year, and exponential growth of 66% since 2010. In response, the marina has recently undergone an expansion programme making it the largest marina in Southeast Asia, and with some of the best cruising grounds in
the region, greater Pattaya and the Gulf of Thailand is the leading hub of marine tourism in Southeast Asia and well-positioned for the opening up of ASEAN and the 2015 ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). “Ocean Marina's recent expansion of both onshore facilities and in-water capacity makes it the largest marina in Southeast Asia. With world-class facilities Ocean Marina is at the heart of Thailand's marine leisure industry and together with the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show are showcasing greater Pattaya, the Gulf of Thailand and the Kingdom's marine treasures to the world,” added Angkawinijwong.

Where is the Pattaya Real Estate Market Today? Shocking news was reported early last month when The Nation broke a story with the sensational headline: Pattaya condo market shrinks 60% in first half! According to the latest Pattaya Condominium Market Research Report released by Colliers International Thailand, the Pattaya condominium market shrank 60 percent in the first half of 2014 due to the country’s political problems. Now that headline alone was enough to horrify the most seasoned real estate
professionals, but just where is our real estate market today as we enter the final quarter of the year? According to Surachet Kongcheep, Colliers associate director of research, there were about 3,800 condominium units launched in the first six months of 2014--about 60 percent lower than in the second half of 2013. Despite that downturn, however, Surachet went on to say that condo starts in the Jomtien area soared by a robust 48 percent. In contrast with the Pattaya

decline in starts, the surge in Jomtien tells us something interesting which makes this shocking article quite a bit more palatable for those of us looking forward to continued progress and prosperity within the real estate sector. One thing that struck me strongly is that with Pattaya land prices still going up, up and away--and the fact that there is less and less land available in Pattaya City, there obviously is going to be a shrinking of condominium launches. Yes, the political situation in the fourth quarter of 2013 and the first five months of 2014 did directly affect the Pattaya property market, but not the entire Pattaya property market by any means. When you consider that the Jomtien area had 48 percent more launches than the last half of 2013, it makes it very clear that the Pattaya inner city area did slow down during the first half of this year but Jomtien is carrying the industry for new construction very well in the condominium sector. Although a shocking headline and seemingly shocking article, I concluded that things really are not that bad, and in the case of the Jomtien area things are doing extremely well considering that we had gone through some political and military maneuvers that could have completely crippled the best of real estate industries. Rony Fineman of the Nova Group launched two more developments in the last number of weeks and we are now able to purchase condominium units at Winston Gale’s impressive Riviera Jomtien, and a number of other

top developers launched or are preparing to launch in Jomtien as well. It makes one ask: is condominium development slowing down inside Pattaya City or is condominium development filling up inside Pattaya City. One thing is for sure: the Jomtien area has not skipped a beat and is moving along very well developing more and more condominiums regularly. So it is safe to say that the real growth area is obviously Jomtien and we have a lot more condominiums in the pipeline waiting to be completed in addition to the 18,850 condominium units scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2014 in Jomtien. Just looking back at the very beginnings of the Jomtien condo boom makes you realize that all of this has happened in just a very short span of time. In fact, the A.D. Grand Jomtien Condominium was first launched just a couple of years back, during those early months after Jomtien Second Road was opened to the public. I will never forget seeing one of those long, white-fabric tent tops with metal pole supports with its back support poles on the sidewalk and its front support poles actually out onto Second Road. They had a few sales people sitting on plastic chairs at small portable tables. Sounds like some kind of joke doesn’t it? Well, let me tell you the A.D. Group sold at least half of those 1,500 condominium units in a heartbeat, and I’m talking about only a matter of months. That was it. From the A.D. Group’s Grand Jomtien

Condominium launch onward, Bangkok and Pattaya developers saw the potential in Jomtien and the potential they saw was huge. Remember The Atlantis? I thought that it was a joke or something. Remember the brand new free car they had propped up on the curb side just outside the sales office? Well not much time has passed and the Atlantis is almost ready for occupancy; it appears that they are going to deliver in a very big way. I was so skeptical in the beginning, asking myself just how The Atlantis developers would be able to deliver what they showed buyers in their brochures and 3D video presentation. But stop by sometime soon and look for yourself as the Atlantis is looking to be a signature Jomtien Second Road residence. I say “bravo Blue Sky Group!” Speaking of the Blue Sky Group I really am looking forward to their completing their Grand Caribbean Resort Condominium on Thappraya Hill just up from Jomtien Beach--a few hundred meters from Second Road. The Blue Sky Group have definitely led the area’s competition to catch the hearts and minds of today’s purchasers and have led the way by bringing about a move towards exciting new residential themes, because simply constructing a condominium building is just not enough in today’s competitive market. So it’s hard to say if the Pattaya condominium market is shrinking or booming, but I am telling you there’s an awful lot of exciting activity--especially in Pattaya’s Jomtien area.

Expecting and Receiving the Best! by Barry Kenyon
New head at Tara Pattana International School What is the “new” Pattaya? It’s the shorthand for the ever-evolving city of the Eastern Seaboard. Once a single-purpose destination offering 24-hour entertainment, the greater Pattaya area has now become much more sophisticated with its own industrial and commercial hub and all the facilities which make it popular with long-term visitors and expats: a growing number of family-orientated leisure pursuits, shopping malls and restaurants to rival the excellence of Bangkok, a wide range of sports and top quality hospitals.

a
nd don’t forget schools. Tara Pattana International School, located in East Pattaya on Pattanakarn Road, is impressive with its landscaped gardens, new purpose-built buildings and first-rate facilities which include a specialist art and design block, a new music room, science labs, basketball courts, cricket nets and (by the end of this year) a brand new 50-meter swimming pool. Technological innovations
Head Teacher Tara Pattana International School include interactive white boards in the classrooms and computerized lesson linkups with schools in other countries including China. At this school you know for sure you are in the 21st century. The owners of the school, Wenxiong (Eric) and Suthinee (May) Sripathurat, are from a well-established family and known for their long commitment to high-quality education. May recalls from her own school days the importance of the House system and good manners in helping her to develop social skills for life which are as
much part of quality education as academic achievement. Eric is a creative businessman with lots of energy and experience of foreign travel, keen to ensure the school provides a truly international perspective in a world today which in many ways reflects a global village. Appointed as head teacher a few months ago, Peter Hartnell actually began here as a teacher in 2010 when the school first opened its doors to students. He’s a graduate of several British universities and taught for many years in UK before
beginning a new career in Thailand in 2000. He was the founding headmaster of two successful international schools in Bangkok before joining Tara Pattana International School. “We don’t want rote learning here,” says Peter, “we want the children to weigh evidence and to be empowered to make choices. "We want staff to notice if a child has a pair of new shoes or a new haircut and to remember their birthdays. With the right kind of teacher-pupil relationship, the sky is the limit for childhood achievement.” Peter

is no remote administrator. He has a fulltime teaching and caring responsibility and does most of his bureaucratic work after three o’clock in the afternoon. The school currently has 112 pupils, roughly the same number of boys and girls, and that population also reflects the “new” Pattaya. Virtually all the children have at least one parent who is not Thai, reflecting the huge influx of expats into the greater Pattaya area. About half the pupils are Russian, but there is a total of 18 nationalities represented including several European, Asian and African countries. As the school is still growing, most of the current students are of primary age. However, a brand new building has opened this autumn to cover key stage three with a curriculum which will guide the youngsters towards the international general certificate of secondary education with examinations set by the boards associated with London and Cambridge universities. “Key stage three,” says Peter Hartnell, “is vitally important in laying down a strong foundation for lifelong learning
as well as preparing young people for the important choices and decisions they will have to make at the end of the course. Students by this time are well equipped to take control of their own learning and to direct it, in partnership with their teachers, towards the goals and aspirations they have for the future. The school is already looking forward to operating post-GCSE courses in several years’ time and will offer GCE advanced level subjects and even the International Baccalaureate perhaps in conjunction with partner schools in the area.” Tara Pattana International School is committed to the truism that education shapes children for life. All students receive an internationally-recognized curriculum based on the national curriculum for England and Wales. But the global village concept is ever-present. Although the language of tuition is English, which incidentally is the unifying language of the 10-country ASEAN block whose ASEAN Economic Community starts to come on line as a free-trade area at the end of next
year, all primary children learn French while many Russian children study Thai (and vice versa) to capitalize on youngsters’ enthusiasm for learning languages as well as ensuring a global challenge in the educational process. It’s a fact of life that, wherever you look in this school, there is initiative and forward planning. Next year the school will be visited by the Council of International Schools to seek accreditation. “I believe we are well-positioned to make the grade,” says Peter, “and CIS recognition is vital for international schools to achieve.” On other fronts, there is an extremely active parents association and the governing body takes a keen interest in all aspects of the school’s activities. Sensitive but vital subjects, including sex education, are under active consideration. The school recently adopted a policy of specializing
in cricket and there is a comprehensive program of summer schools, performing arts and links with other institutions. There’s no question that Tara Pattana International School has a very bright future. It’s offering what children and parents are seeking in the ever-transforming technological, discovery world of the 21st century. The secret is that high standard education is being delivered in a truly caring and family environment.

In fund managers' ongoing attempts to cherry-pick sectors that will offer consistent, worthwhile returns to investors over the recent turbulent years, funds have been set up to specifically avoid the machinations of the world stock markets, in arenas that enjoy a very strong demand curve, despite the economic conditions. Although stock markets have rallied in recent months, the fact is that only very recently have they surpassed 2007 levels. Simply put, had your money been linked to the main indices all that time, only now would you have got your original investment back, plus a little extra, with nothing there for inflation. Six years is a long time to wait for your holdings to claw back their original paper value. One of the interesting sectors that has been attracting attention is the holiday leisure park market. Apart from the fact that it’s on a growth path, a significant number of UK local authority pension funds have invested in such funds, along with many big UK corporate household names, as well as individuals. Consequently, we have looked into this area in depth. In the current financial world we now find ourselves, it’s not often we’ve been able to identify a particular fund that has demonstrated the business acumen required to deliver good investment performance throughout the turbulence and beyond. The UK leisure park business is currently a 3 billion GBP per annum business. The purchase/rental of prime sites and significantly upgrading the facilities is one part of the equation. ‘Camp’ sites are being replaced with modern, fixed units and amenities, resulting in both increased capital values and higher income streams. The institutional funding has allowed their operation to put in place an impressive development and acquisition schedule over the coming years, which is likely to ensure the continuing performance of the stated target returns of 8-12 percent. Keep in mind, there is no correlation between this fund’s strong performance and the stock markets. Once again, we see the scenario that has proved so successful in recent times; a dominant position in a specific sector that’s enjoying very strong demand, with continually rising turnover/income, away from the vagaries of the markets. As with all property linked funds, there is always the question of liquidity. The holding of real assets, by its very nature, means they cannot be disposed of overnight. Nonetheless, the liquidity level maintained in this fund is above the industry norm, while still providing a very worthwhile return. Despite the lingering sluggishness in some developed economies, there is good growth in UK PLC and this ‘bull’ period in the UK leisure holiday park market is generating substantial profits. Nonetheless, it will not carry on at this level indefinitely. The industry experts forecast a 10-year window in which the UK’s domestic leisure parks will be brought up to world-class standards. In the meantime, there could well be an opportunity to reap rewards from this increasingly successful business. Tips & Advice
What Our
Readers Say
Vegetarian disappointment
(Arnold Drake writes): I think the arrival of the annual vegetarian festival is the right time to raise this subject. Pattaya is now blessed with a number of Thaiowned vegetarian restaurants throughout the city. But I am very disappointed to see that all of them appear to rely heavily on providing fake meat dishes including duck soup, chicken curry and the rest. Of course, no animal products are used and the look and taste are wholly dependent on soya or wheat products or whatever. But this is not the point. Most vegetarians I know actually dislike the taste or even the thought of meat. They are not reluctant converts to a cause but true vegetarians or vegans – the difference is that the latter don’t eat eggs
Second British Passport In response to readers asking about this topic: Who can obtain one? To obtain a second British passport without cancelling the first, you have to be working overseas in several countries. The idea is that you may have to apply for a visa (which can take days or weeks) in one country while needing to visit a different one. The most obvious categories are oil or gas technicians working in the international oil industry or security staff. Likely places of work include Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan. Applicants sometimes include visitors both to Muslim countries and Israel. What documents are needed? You have to fill in the normal passport application form but tick the box for “your first British passport” and not a renewal. Here in Thailand, you also need two color passport photos (check the size on the British embassy website), a signed color copy of every page of your current passport, your original British birth certificate or similar, proof of address in an official document (e.g. tax form) and a detailed letter from your employer. This should state clearly why you need two passports and give countries and approximate dates for a visit in coming months. This letter should not be more than four weeks old when you apply. You then have to book an appointment by email at Trendy Office Building in Bangkok, although your authorized representative can visit there on your behalf. Please note that the current passport has to be shown at the meeting although it will be returned on the spot to you or to your representative.
and dairy produce – who want to stick to plants, vegetables, nuts, grains and fruits. I go fairly regularly to Cambodia and Vietnam and I have not noticed the same problem there. So, as regards Pattaya, it seems to me that vegetarians are restricted mainly to Indian restaurants. We now have around 50 of them and there are some excellent ones, including the long-established Ali Baba on Central Road. I have yet to see an Indian restaurant here which uses fake meat or fish to tempt us. There is no point anyway. Much as I like Indian food – and about half of all Indians decline meat and fish anyway – it would be good if at least one Thai restaurant offered “genuine” veggie dishes without worrying about the fake animal products. How long does the process take? Once the application has been lodged and accepted, the waiting period is about two months at present. You will be able to use your first passport during this time as you are specifically asking for it not to be cancelled as you believe you are eligible to carry two. All passports are issued in UK and, for Thailand, returned to Trendy Office. Staff there will phone you when it is ready for collection. Again your authorized representative can collect it on your behalf. Trendy Office will not send it on to you by post or by courier mail. Is success assured? Assuming Trendy Office accepts the application, it is then sent by them to the UK. It is passport staff there who make the decision whether to award a second passport or not. It is not even worth applying unless you have a detailed letter from your employer setting out the case and your need to visit several countries as part of your contract. Can I use both passports as I wish? Once you enter Thailand with one passport, you must leave the country using the same passport. You will find that most countries in the world have the same policy. If for example you mislaid the first passport while here in Thailand, you cannot simply take the other one to leave. In these circumstances, you would report the loss to Trendy Office and apply for an emergency document quoting the lost passport number. The best advice is simply to make sure you don’t lose one. What is the cost? The cost is 106.01 pounds for a first passport – we mentioned before a second passport application is not a renewal. That includes the courier fee to send the application to UK and back. This price assumes you are doing everything yourself. Trendy Office accepts credit card payments only, not cash or cheques or banker’s order.
Snap Judgment Statistics and reality It is heartening to see that senior figures in the travel and tourism industry have cast doubt on official numbers of how many million tourists the country is currently receiving. According to Apichart Sankary, former president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA), government figures have provided unrealistic data, especially on international arrivals, in order to provide optimistic information to the public. Thus the official number of international arrivals between January and August this year was 15 million compared with 17 million in the same period last year, a drop of around ten percent. Yet the ATTA statistics show a 40 percent drop year on year. Other anecdotal evidence to show that the decline has been substantial is the lack of queues at the immigration counters at Suvarnabhumi airport and reports from hotels about occupancy rates. It is not necessary to invent a conspiracy to explain what has been going on. Part of the answer is in the way official data is collected. For example, one-day border crossers – especially from Malaysia – are invariably classed as tourists even though they maybe in Thailand for less than 24 hours. Moreover, international arrivals even at airports are not categorized for business or for leisure or for other reasons. They all tend to be jumbled together as one category: “tourists”. It appears that every time a foreigner enters Thailand he or she is counted as a new arrival. So anyone on a oneyear visa who leaves the country – let’s say four times in 12 months – will count as four separate individuals. Whilst it may be thought that there are few such individuals, in reality there are at least 300,000 foreigners with long-stay retirement, marriage or education visas or work permits. With the upcoming ASEAN Economic Community, and bearing in mind the pivotal place of tourism in Thailand’s economy, it is more important than ever for the country to produce meaningful statistics for the benefit of investors, businesses and the general public. For many years the official data used to say that 800,000 British tourists visited Thailand every year. Carried to its logical conclusion, this would have meant that every man, woman and child in UK would have visited the country within a single generation. The tourist ministry is aware of the statistical quirks and says it will promote international arrivals through media and on-line channels and make immigration procedures less time-consuming. There are also plans to promote Thailand as a weekend retreat for other Asian countries once the 10-country economic free-trade area commences at the end of next year. ASEAN countries are expected to become one another’s best customers in the near future. But other measures need to be taken as well. Thailand’s visa and entry requirements are amongst the most complex in the region. Initially, we were told that the ban on visa runners was to prevent illegal work by aliens, but then the NCPO chief, General Prayuth, stepped in and urged moderation. One result seems to have been that foreigners from 49 countries who do not need a prior visa to obtain 30 days on entry can now extend for a further 30 days rather than the traditional one week. Nonetheless, there is still considerable confusion about “who is entitled to what” as regards visas as literally hundreds of bloggers on the popular site Thaivisa.com can readily testify. The new Tourism minister indeed has a full plate on her hands to boost tourism whilst producing honest statistics which might indeed require tweaking the immigration bureaucracy at airports and border posts. We wish her well.

Youth Focus How to grasp multiplication times-tables for children by Justin Senior
I am someone of an age who can remember Ford Cortinas, seeing aging rock stars in their prime and witnessing tennis well before Federer and Sampras eras. I am also someone who can instantly tell you 9 x 6 and even 11 x 12. That may have something to do with the endless chanting and reciting of times tables which went on in the schools that I attended. Such methods fell out of fashion in the nineties well after I had left school. (I’m not that old…. surely!) To get to the point, the
news is that the new British National Curriculum has returned to a more traditional academic curriculum, and it stipulates that children should master their tables up to 12x12 by the age of nine, rather than the previous expectation of 10x10 by the time they leave at 11. The emphasis once again errs towards rote learning and memorization for timestables and it has provoked critics; nevertheless, others will argue, including me, “it didn’t do me any harm”. Times-tables are an essential building block without which all manner
Know-It-All
by Tim Swihart Year 7
Consider the following conversation between a teacher and his student in the classroom: Student: Teacher, how do I find the area of a triangle? Teacher: Hey, I don't want to just feed you information! I want to teach you how to learn! In fact, I want to teach you to learn how to learn. I want to help you to become a learning learner! Student: You have no idea how to find the area of a triangle, do you? Teacher: See! You figured that out all by yourself! One of the first things I discovered when I aspired to be a teacher (and a parent) was that it didn’t require me to know everything – much to my relief. In fact, as teachers and parents, we do our children a great disservice if we try to convince them we know all the answers. They need to
understand the reality that learning is a life-long process. “Learning” tends to sound rather boring and formidable when associated with “lifelong process.” But it doesn’t have to be. It can be an adventure, and even fun. We simply need to tap into one of the things our children do best – play and have fun. Child psychologists have long known that when children play, they are not just having fun, but they are practicing and developing skills they will use later in life. In other words, they are “practicing” to become healthy, well-adjusted and successful adults. Play stimulates key areas in the brain, not only for enjoyment but also for maximizing learning, experiencing creativity and, ultimately, selfactualization. Game theory, and its application to learning, is on the cutting edge among educators who are seeking to initiate their students in the
of number work, including basic division, fractions, and multiplication, are severely hindered. It’s the same as needing to know your letters if you are going to read.
learning process. They are finding it not only engages students to become highly competent in academics, but it also prepares them for life by stimulating creative thinking skills. Consider just a few of the ways “playing” not only leads to learning maximization, but also lays the groundwork for success in life: 1. To play a game, you have to know the rules. Life Lesson: knowledge is power 2. To enjoy the game, you have to know the objective – why you are playing. Life Lesson: life is more rewarding and enjoyable when you know your purpose 3. To be successful in the game, you have to develop and use a strategy. Life Lesson: success in life is dependent on having a plan and working your plan – know where you are going (purpose), know how to get there (rules, strategy), then go for it.
Chanting and learning by rote worked well for me, but it may not work for everyone. Children learn in different ways and they respond to different stimuli. When I returned to the UK in the summer, my 11-yearold niece told me that you can get hold of CD’s with times-tables sung to pop music - including timestables raps. You can also download computer games apps such as Ghost Blasters, where you fire at numbered ghosts which are multiples of your chosen times table. The problem with these methods is that to play the games you still have to have a basic knowledge of the tables. For British people familiar with TV celebrities, you will recall the vivacious 4. To improve performance in the game, you must learn how to deal with the disappointment of failure and the satisfaction of victory in order to learn from both and, as a result, enhance performance each time the game is played. Life Lesson: both failure and success can be used to strive for improvement and achieve self-actualization. Using games and play as a part of learning certainly has its place in the classroom. One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is not our knowledge, but rather the gift of learning to learn. I firmly believe that games and play are vital to that endeavor. As a Year 7 teacher and part of the team of educators at MIS, I am always striving to mold my students into learning learners. I am also trying to determine how to find the area of a triangle, just in case the question ever comes up!
and attractive Carol Vorderman, a brilliant Mathematician renowned for undertaking fast and accurate arithmetical calculations during the show, Countdown. Highly respected, she advised teachers to begin by teaching the five and 10s, then move on to the three, six and nine family because they are related, followed by the two, four and eight. Sevens are apparently the most difficult because they’re not part of a pattern. She once said, “There are numbers everywhere, so get children to multiply the digits in number plates or in recipes.” Voluptuous looks
aside, whenever I saw Carol on TV, I always felt she knew what she was talking about. A recent UK survey suggested that up to a quarter of all British 12year olds struggle with even easy times-tables such as the three, four and six times-table. So the question is: What about your own children? And this question goes out to both teachers and parents. Quite clearly, real fluency demands practice over weeks and months. Drilling is the key. Get reciting, get chanting, and start multiplying digits on car number plates.
Teaching Effectively by Gordon Peter Yates. In order to effectively teach our children, teachers need to be aware of what the students are learning and how they are learning. In a learning environment, there needs to be stimulus to learn, resources to do activities that reinforce concepts and discipline in order to get tasks completed. A good school will provide all three of these factors. As teachers, we can follow three basic rules to ensure the above: • Keep the flow of activities • Be organized • Keep it interesting In keeping a flow of activities, especially in the primary school program, we should be following our schedules seamlessly. Each period or lesson should finish smoothly and the new lesson begins seamlessly. This means the students need to have good routines organized. Book monitors can collect the books / distribute books in the transition time between periods. All resources (worksheets, materials) should be at hand immediately for the next lesson. As a teacher, being organized in your own mind is essential for effective teaching. Not only do the teachers need to be aware of the sequence of events the students will be involved in but also how assessment is to be gathered to gauge learning achieved. An organized teacher is an effective teacher. It is essential that the students remain engaged with the topic. In order to facilitate this, we as teachers need to be aware of the type of learning activity the students are engaged in. Standard reading and writing activities should be supplemented by pictures, drawings and craft activities. These examples are good for the kinesthetic learners (according to Gardner’s theory). Wishing all teachers and students a happy and prosperous year.

Our Community The young and old of Pattaya Just outside Pattaya, on the road to Sri Racha, are several large government-run complexes housing ladies with disabilities, a boys home and several large houses for the elderly. Many of the elderly residents are without any family who are able to care of them; there is an ever-increasing number suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia, while others are in need of 24hour support from the nursing staff. The elderly residents receive few, if any, visitors. Children and grandchildren are often too busy, too far away or
just can’t be bothered to visit, so it can become a very lonely time for a person who in their younger days was the center of their family, who worked hard and who lived a good life. The youngsters from the Father Ray Children’s Village recently made one of their regular visits to the elderly residents and spent several hours in their company For the children it was an occasion to perform their song and dance routines in front of an enthusiastic audience and also spend time with a section of the population that they do not meet every day. For the elderly men and
women it was an afternoon of fun, dancing and being fussed over by children young enough to be their grandchildren or even great-grandchildren.
by Derek Franklin
The afternoon’s entertainment started with the children dancing to the Birdie Song, which meant things could only get better. The children were very surprised to discover that, after helping push the residents in their wheelchairs, many were able to stand and even join in the dancing when hearing a song they knew and liked. As the day came to an end, there were lots of hugs as the residents bade farewell to their new young friends, with everyone looking forward to the next visit. New charity golf tournament by Derek Franklin Golf is, without a doubt, the most popular sporting activity among expats living in Pattaya and regular visitors to our city. Local newspapers give over several pages each week to announce results, show photos of competition winners and also announce tournaments. There are several prestigious tournaments each year that regularly see more people wishing to play than can actually play, and now there is a new tournament that will raise much needed funds for one of Pattaya’s largest charitable
organizations, the Father Ray Foundation. The inaugural Father Ray Charity Golf for Good Tournament 2014 will take place on the afternoon of Saturday, 18th of October, at the newly opened Siam Country Club Pattaya Waterside course. There will be a shotgun start at 12 noon. The cost of entering at team of four, in what is hoped will become an annual tournament, is 40,000 baht, 10,000 baht per player. This price will cover the cost of playing in the scramble tournament, an invitation to the awards ceremony dinner
and a souvenir gift bag, and a percentage of the price will be given as a donation to the Education Fund at the Father Ray Foundation. As an extra bonus, the first
player to achieve a hole-in-one will win a brand new Nissan Almera. More details can be obtained from info@fr-ray.org and ajima@fr-ray.org

PSC Golf from Tropical Bert’s by Derek Brook Bangpra (Stableford) The peace and quiet of Bert’s on a Tuesday morning was shattered as the ‘boys’ returned from wherever they had been. You know sometimes it is nice just not to make out the start sheet and for the few to know who they are playing with without my having to resort to actually thinking. However as I entered Bert’s, there they all were including some who had come in at the last minute. Never mind. In all honesty it was nice to see the list full and their holiday from a holiday played out. It was also good to smell the breakfast and coffee as many ate Bert’s brekkers and drank the coffee. Arriving at Bangpra it was not surprising to see the ground soaking wet and some of the bunkers had
water in them. So with carts not allowed off the path we played PSC rules. We were off a little early, and with the first three groups being 3-balls, a gap soon developed ahead of us as we were the first 4-ball. Still we got around in good time. The course was wet and in some places very wet, still the weather was fine and all the players thoroughly enjoyed their day out. Soon back, a nice cool shower and up to the restaurant saw many of the players enjoying the food. Then it was into cars and back to Bert’s. One of the things I usually find is that when the going gets tough, the good golfers perform better than the higher handicappers, and so it proved on this day, and with the scribe slowly sinking in the west as a golfer, the B flight is most comforting.

Flight winners with one of Bert’s finest So in the A flight, 0 to 18, say, I do like the B flight. So the winner was Bob Watson the winner in the B flight with 39 points, that meant a was Patrick Poussier with 34 gross 73. Great round in very points ahead of Derek Brook tiring conditions. In second in second with a magnificent was Brian Parish with 36 29 points and Nigel Perry points and in third was Max in third with 28 points. Scott with 35 points. So to T.T.F.N. the needy, the B flight, and Near Pin: Mike O’Brien, here the scores were most Max Scott, Mashi Kaneta modest. I really am glad to and Brian Parish
Chris & Ron on top at the Mountain! by Peter Blackburn Mountain Shadow – Stableford It was the start of a new week and the challenging Mountain Shadow was our booked venue so we made our way to The Growling Swan in readiness for our departure. We had two minivans booked with Alain transporting the overflow and we handed out welcomes to Martin Todd who had just returned from a week of golf in Japan, Chris Stewart, Steve Jones and Leeroy Bloomfield from Western Australia and our old mate Roy “Plums” Dayton and his lady Kae who were back with us from San Francisco. We were able to leave the GS seven minutes early as all were on time and after a 45-minute drive we arrived at the golf course where it was fairly quiet. After a few minutes on the practice putting green we headed off to the first tee and decided to use the blue tees which meant a test for some of us. We had two three balls at the head of the field and the first
one hit off 20 minutes ahead of schedule at 9:40 am in excellent weather conditions although somewhat hot and steamy. The golf course was in great shape and the greens were very well prepared as usual and with no one ahead of us we maintained a very good pace, reaching the half way mark in 1 hour and 50 minutes. After stopping for a refreshment break before the 13th tee our pace slowed down a bit, especially as after coming off the 14th tee good old Buckers was seen writhing on the ground in agony after being accidentally hit in the “orchestra stalls” by JP’s caddy. After a quick perusal of the rule book it was decided that there would be no penalty to Buckers or the caddy and we proceeded at a reasonable pace, finishing the round in 3 hours and 45 minutes. It had been a very enjoyable round with excellent company although very hot and it was great to get into the showers afterwards. We had two divisions – division A for handicaps 0 to
14 and division B for golfers on handicaps of 15 and over with three places in each division. There were also rewards for nearest-the-pin, the par threes, and longest first putts on the 9th and 18th greens. There were a couple of very good scores but many very ordinary ones, so I guess the golf course was the winner on the day but it was no trouble for Chris Stewart who won the A division with a fine 39 points with good old Ebrahim in second place with 34 points and your writer, Peter “Blacky” Blackburn in third spot after scoring 33 points. Ron Grafton was the winner in B division with 37 points, four points ahead of John Anderson in second place and Steve Jones took out third spot with 27 points. Results: Division A – 0 to 14 1st – Chris Stewart (4) – 39 points 2nd – Ebrahim (12) – 34 points 3rd – Peter Blackburn (13) – 33 points Division B – 15 and over 1st – Ron Grafton (15) – 37 points 2nd – John Anderson (32) – 33 points 3rd – Steve Jones (22) – 27 points NTP’s 5th – Chris Stewart 8th – Duangjai Tusagad 15th – Martin Todd 17th – Takeshi Hakozaki LFP’s 9th – Ebrahim 18th – Chris Stewart

The Growling Swan NAGA Award (awarded to the golfer
who has the worst score on the day and discreetly their score is not made public) was won by Gordon Clegg and he accepted the award like the good sport that he is. Geri then kindly paraded Deefa the Dog and of course collected many donations for the needy in Pattaya from our generous Growling Swan golfers. It was then back to the bar for some Aussie cold, low-priced beers and there were several of us recounting the day’s events while watching the AFL Brownlow Medal Count from Melbourne. Congratulations to Matt Priddis from my team West Coast Eagles who won the medal after a consistently good year. Growling Swan Golf, the home of friendly golf in Pattaya, welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low and high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. You & Your Pets Nano Aquariums: How to Create a Healthy Small Aquarium by Drs. Foster and Smith, www.PetEducation.com Whether you’re establishing your first aquarium, or expanding your hobby experience with a new niche system, small aquariums in the 12-gallon range make a rewarding and relaxing project at home or in the office. These small aquariums, often called “nano-aquariums,” have a compact footprint that makes them a perfect fit for that empty corner or bare wall. With the advances in multistage filtration and compact fluorescent lighting, maintaining a thriving freshwater or marine system in a nanoenvironment is easier than ever. But small-volume aquariums also demand special attention, because changes in water quality, temperature, and fish stress levels become more pronounced in aquariums less than 20 gallons. With patience, research, and a little extra diligence, you too can create a beautiful, healthy nano-system. Here are some tips to get started: 1. Pick a kit – A hobbyist’s best bet is to get a foolproof aquarium kit with integrated filtration and lighting built-in. That way, every component is a perfect fit, and you’ll just need to decide on an appropriate heater. The most popular 12-gallon aquarium kits include the classic Eclipse System Twelve and the cutting edge Nano Cube, each in the $100 range. Both feature stylish bowfront designs with panoramic viewing. 2. Place wisely – Though you may be tempted to position your compact
aquarium on a desktop or office cabinet, remember that even a 12-gallon aquarium weighs over 120 lbs when filled! Invest in an appropriate aquarium stand that’s built to bear the load and humidity. You’ll be rewarded with peace of mind - and extra storage space too! 3. Choose a theme – Focus your aquascaping and stocking plans around a specific region, species, or community grouping. This will make it easier to keep your water parameters on target for all inhabitants at once, and the familiar surroundings you provide - including shelter and breeding structures - will keep stress levels to a minimum. 4. Stock small & sparse – Restraint and patience are a small aquarium hobbyist’s best friends. Avoid overpopulating your aquarium or you’ll find water quality very difficult to keep viable. Also, when establishing a new system, introduce only a few fish at a time over several weeks - if not months. Select the smallest fish possible, building your community around a small school, one or two showcase fish, and a modest group of bottom cleaners. 5. Go live for natural filtration – Let nature work for your aquarium’s health. For best results with minimum external filtration, avoid artificial plants and structures. Instead, consider live plants and eco-complete gravel for freshwater aquariums, and live rock or sand for your nano reef.
6. Brighten your eclipse – Many Eclipse System Twelve hobbyists who want to see even better results in plant or reef growth choose to upgrade the wattage of their hood lighting. Fortunately, retrofit kits built specifically for the task are easy to find and install. 7. Test/Observe daily – Smallvolume aquariums experience accelerated cycles in water quality, making daily testing and observation an absolute necessity. Fish behavior - gasping, hiding, drifting, or darting - is your best indicator of other “invisible” health dangers to be concerned about. Also, keep some 5-in1 Quick Dip Strips near your aquarium for “ballpark” parameter checks. If some nitrate, nitrite, or pH levels concern you, zero-in on the problem with more accurate, pro-grade test kits. 8. Frequent partial water changes – In nature, rain and water currents refresh water conditions by diluting and carrying away toxins before they can build up to excessive levels. The best thing you can do for your inhabitants’ health is to change their water – 10-20 percent – as often as twice a week. This is especially important if you’re pushing the population limit, or are keeping fish with larger bio-loads. 9. Change media often – To avoid the scourge of algae and to keep your fish healthy and stress free, change your filter media according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. If you’re inattentive to regular filter maintenance, some chemical media, as it becomes exhausted and saturated, may begin seeping the excess toxins back into your aquarium! 10. Act fast when problems arise – In small enclosed ecosystems, little problems become big problems fast. The bio-wheel you noticed has stopped turning, that little white spot on your Gourami, the Nitrite level which tested high... waiting even a day to take action could lead to your entire system crashing. Observe daily, test often, and always remedy the problems you discover within the same day. The health of your aquatic life depends on it! © 2014 Foster & Smith, Inc. This lovely Burmese girl chose to have her four babies at the Pattaya Today offices but transferred to us as foster parents. She is now neutered and is ready for a new home. A very friendly and loving pet for some lucky family.
Gucci
This fine little fellow came to us after a grim start in life outside an apartment complex. He has settled in with us quickly and is now one of the liveliest members of our extended cat family. He’s an affectionate kitten and has an inquiring nature.
Raggy
Sadly this small kitten lost his mom to an angry dog in a close down restaurant in Jomtien. He managed to stay hidden to escape death and his cries were heard by a kindly Russian couple. He is now doing well and will soon be ready for adoption.
Magic
This little lovely was rescued from a market roof after her mom was frightened away. She was only a few days old at the time and her eyes were still closed. But she is now almost ready for a new and safe home to enjoy her life with you.
Cat Corner Tip
Going to the Dogs... If you think dogs can't count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then give him only two of them.
Cats for You in Pattaya
by Dr. RJ Peters to Pattaya’s cat lovers
-Phil Pastoret
Cats are known to be finicky, but it's not always about their food. They also may choose not to eat or drink if the bowls aren't right. What can go wrong with a bowl? Most of the time, it's about keeping it clean. It's important to wash their food and water bowls every day to prevent any buildup of residue that can create an undesirable scent. Cats will not eat spoiled food, as many dogs will, so we must wash their bowls daily, preferably in a way that disinfects them. Plastic bowls are especially susceptible to harboring bacteria and repellent odors because they are porous. Stainless steel and glass bowls are more hygienic. A cat might also shun a bowl if it's in the wrong location. They like privacy, or at least some assurance that they may eat without being interrupted or bothered. Dr. Peters is the author of three informative and entertaining books about household pets: Our Amazing Cats, and Our Amazing Cats Vol. 2, now available from Amazon Books and at www.ouramazingcats.com, and her newest book, Our Amazing Dogs.
