Farang support Prayuth A
n informal survey of over 100 foreign tourists and expats in the Pattaya area suggests that most of them are happy with the May 22 coup, military strongman and now PM Prayuth Chan-ocha and the main political events since then. The survey on a random survey basis was conducted by Pattaya Today in early November, although no claim is made that the results typify foreign sentiment as a whole. About half of the respondents were British, the rest mainly French, German and Russian. Women made up about a third of the group. More than 80 percent of those questioned found the most reassuring fact was that the May putsch had led to the arrival of public order on the streets of Bangkok. One typical respondent said, “Most foreigners in Thailand just want a good time here. They are not much interested in Thai politics but they do know that there were bombings and shootings in Bangkok in the early months of this year.” But 92 percent said they had not personally witnessed any public disorder or even any street crime of any kind in Pattaya. As regards the situation in Pattaya, most respondents said their knowledge of street crimes came from local newspapers and various internet sites. “I personally have
not seen any attacks or robberies,” said one respondent, “but I know they exist because of watching the local TV. But I feel that the main purpose of publicizing crime is actually to boost circulation as bad news is always more popular than the good variety.” According to the survey, the best known street crimes were those committed by transgender ladyboys. “We are constantly told about police crackdowns,” said a respondent, “but the problem remains as these people are released after paying a derisory fine.” Virtually no respondents appeared to know that some transgender people in the resort are in paid employment and are not reduced to a life of crime and prostitution. As regards the political future of Thailand, opinion was more evenly split. 58 percent of respondents felt that the military government should remain in office until the country was reorganized, even if that tenure were to last more than 18 months. But a substantial minority of 30 percent felt that civil disorder was bound to ensue if a return to democratic elections was delayed for too long. “The country can’t remain under martial law indefinitely,” said a respondent, Continued on page 4

News Drunken driver flees checkpoint
Police manning a road block on Jomtien Second Road were forced to shoot at the tyres of a speeding vehicle which refused their instructions to stop. The white Honda was making a loud noise because of recent improvements or adaptations but quickly ground to a halt with one tyre out of action. The driver Suthee
Noppasit, 31 and an engineer by profession, was taken to Pattaya police station where an inspection of his vehicle revealed an unlicensed gun and several bullets. The driver appeared drunk and did not respond to the allegations of criminal conduct, but he was booked anyway for careless driving and drunken behavior.
Culprits escape from police custody Two alleged criminals being taken to Pattaya court for sentencing in a police pickup managed to slip their handcuffs and fled into a wooded area near the Father Ray Foundation. About 20 police began an intensive search but found no trace of the absconders. A source then informed the constabulary that the wanted men had boarded a minibus bound for Bangkok. A road block was established and the minibus in question was stopped. However, neither of the two men was aboard. The search is continuing, but the general consensus is that the police had erred in not confining the criminals in the usual prison cage-like truck. A pickup is apparently an easier vehicle from which to flee.
Train strikes car Monks test positive for yaba
Following a tip-off from a concerned member of the public, narcotics officials raided the temple at Nong Yai, North Pattaya, and asked all the monks to take a urine test. Three brothers tested positive and two admitted using category five illegal drugs and using associated tools and equipment. The investigation is said to be ongoing.
Two persons were injured at the Nong Sadao intersection, Banglamung, after a train hit a Toyota car on the crossing. The driver of the car, Sarawuth Tiensri, aged 20, was found trapped and injured in the vehicle which had lurched into the embankment nearby. The passenger, his 50-year-old mother, was found 20 meters away from the vehicle. They were sent to Banglamung Hospital where they received treatment for miscellaneous injuries and shock. The Bangkok-Plutaluang train was parked nearby but reporters said it had received only very minor damage. The specific reasons why the car was in the path of the oncoming train had not been settled at press time.
Not much progress in shooting case Pattaya police have explained that no definite culprit has been identified in the shooting daeth of restaurant owner Chalor Tedthong, 51, at Bali Hai pier. Many witnesses have been interviewed and a sketch made of the presumed attacker who is thought to have been a professional hitman. The latest information is that Chalor was involved in a land conflict at Koh Larn with paperwork already in the court system. It is thought likely that this dispute may have been relevant to the murder.

“and people simply have to be allowed a safety valve of expression.” 12 percent had no opinion. Asked about the coup effects in Pattaya, 64 percent said they had not noticed any since the abolition of the initial curfew several months ago. But a further 30 percent lamented the loss of the English-speaking local radio stations which have only recently been returning on air. Another effect noticed by about one third of the respondents was the change in various immigration rules relating to farang visas,
although this was essentially a police matter. However, General Prayuth last August did ask the Immigration Bureau to implement changes with sensitivity to avoid barring genuine tourists from entry to the Kingdom. The survey also showed that most foreigners were much more concerned with parochial issues than with national ones. “I’d like to see better roads in Pattaya, a new railway system, efficient policing and proper attention to environmental issues,” commented one respondent. Another said, “I’m more concerned with the cost of
living and the value of the pound than with what’s going on in the Bangkok centers of power.” Those particular sentiments are likely widespread in the foreign community.

Lucky Russians give tip A minibus driver, who dropped off two Russian tourists at Central Festival Pattaya Beach, discovered that a black bag containing cash worth 60,000 baht had been left on a seat. Surachoke Sapchalerm, a public-spirited man, notified the police who in due course handed the bag and cash over to the owners as they arrived at the police station to file a lost property report. Daria Labkovskaya and Mikhail Azovskii, the Russians, said they were delighted and handed over 10 percent of the cash to the driver as a richly deserved reward.

Lucky Brit indeed!
British tourist David Pennington accidentally left his digital camera, passport and cash worth 55,000 baht in a taxi he had hired to come to Pattaya from Suvarnabhumi airport. Apparently he and two friends asked the taxi driver to stop at a seafront bar as they were desperate for some beers. Only later did they realize that Pennington had not removed his cases. A police report was filed and the Brit received all his belongings after the honest taxi driver delivered them to police headquarters. The taxi driver received a fully-deserved reward.

Thailand still very popular The Land of Smiles is the third-favorite destination in Asia among the global expat population and the seven best across all continents. That’s according to one of the largest-ever polls conducted by British bank HSBC of 9,300 respondents. The report stated, “Thailand emerges from the 2014 Expat Explorer Survey as the best destination for expats looking for an improved lifestyle at a low cost.” Over two-thirds of expats say they associate Thailand with a higher quality of life and claim their disposable income here is greater than when they were living in their first country. Most of the respondents were of middle age and working in all sectors of employment. They were asked about their financial situation, salary, savings and the local economy as well as their quality of life and family issues such as
educational opportunities for children. Switzerland emerged as the overall winner with a trusted economy, good quality of life and good salaries of around $200,000 a year. Many Swissbased expats mentioned the better balance between work and life in general, availability of outdoor activities and a general environment favorable to the family. Asia was also noted for its salaries with the average expat wage being $120,000 yearly against a global average in this survey of $92,000. Singapore city state was the top expat choice in Asia and the second globally as it provided good economic opportunities and an admirable quality of life. China, the second in Asia and the third overall, was the top choice for high earners with a quarter of the respondents enjoying salaries of more than $300,000 annually. The
© Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)
lowest ranking countries, of the 34 in the survey, were Egypt followed by UK and Brazil. As regards Thailand, the country was less popular among expats earning high salaries than the more frugal. The less-wealthy were mostly older. The survey does not elaborate this point but may have resulted from the large number of foreigners working as teachers on modest salaries for whatever reason. Expats in general in Thailand said they
enjoyed paying less for water and electric, accommodation and shopping while the most popular single feature was the quality of childcare and children’s confidence. But Thailand ranked bottom, or near bottom, when it came to learning the local language, making friends or feeling welcome at work. Thailand also ranked poorly about environmental issues. Expats also complained about the cost of good healthcare in the country as a whole.
Marks and Sparks come to Pattaya The famous British retailer Marks and Spencer has at last opened a branch in Pattaya, a sizeable triple unit on the ground floor of Central Festival Pattaya Beach. There is a wide choice of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, some of it traditional and some chic and even contemporary. Prices are expensive and reflect foreign import levies. Unusually for chain stores in Thailand, M and S offer some very big sizes, especially for men, and shoes go up to UK size 12 or Euro 47. However, there is a limited range for bigfoot shoppers. Foreigners wishing to join the mall’s discount card club should remember to take along their passport to register, photocopies not being acceptable.
The food section, in accordance with M and S practice throughout most of Asia, is mainly jams, cereals, sweets, sauces and other tinned or packaged products with a long shelf life. Customers hoping to find fresh or frozen food will be disappointed – there isn’t any, presumably because the market is not large enough to produce domestically in Thailand while importing freshly-made food is problematical and expensive. However, there is a particular good selection of UK-produced chocolate bars and candies and biscuits, just like you can buy back in UK. Many visitors find that the surprisingly good wine selection is the star attraction
for devotees of the grape. Wine is expensive everywhere in Thailand, thanks to a punitive tax regime, but M and S can hold its own pricewise with other stores and has some excellent French, American and Italian bottles,
some manufactured specially for the M and S company worldwide. Prices start at 595 baht and quickly move up. There is a wider selection of rose wines than you would normally expect in a unit of this size.
Jomtien Beach Road now one way Following many heated arguments in committee, Jomtien Beach Road became one way (north to south) for a provisional period of one month to test whether the new routing reduces traffic snarl-ups. The one-way route will be from the Hanuman Statue curve in the road until Soi Chaiyapruek which is a distance of just over two kilometers. Nor thbound traffic (towards North Pattaya) will not be able to use Beach Road within those boundaries and will drive along Jomtien Second Road towards their destination. There will be several sois granting access between the
two main roads. The hope is that the situation will turn out as successfully as the decision to make Pattaya Beach Road and Pattaya Second Road oneway as was originally done in the 1990s. Banglamung district chief Sakchai Taenghor justified the Jomtien proposal by saying it would double the number of lanes for southbound traffic on Jomtien Beach Road and allow for public transport stoppages or coach unloading without blocking half the thoroughfare. Critics of the move, including members of the Pattaya Business and Tourism Association, say the Pattaya analogy is misleading as the
space separating the two Jomtien roads is much longer than Pattaya Beach and Second Roads. Thus transit times and ease of access to buildings not actually on the Beach Road will be compromised. Other critics have pointed to the
danger of accidents at night as members of the public will become confused by the new arrangements. A final decision whether to make the arrangements permanent will be made after the test period has been analyzed.

News Flood danger leads to meeting The recent downpours in Pattaya revealed yet again that the city cannot handle torrential downpours without floods. Deputy Mayor Weerawat Khakai, therefore, held a meeting at City Hall of council members and staff of the public works division. It was agreed to divide the city into five zones from Kratinglai to Jomtien and to re-examine some of the underground pipes which are too narrow to be effective. Another problem is said to be a shortage of pumps. Officials said they would release the details at a future date.
Sukhumvit Road surface to receive attention Elderly farang falls asleep at the wheel
A nasty accident occurred on Third Road, close to LK Pavilion, when a 72-year-old Swiss man crashed his car into a parked car. The car owner, Phasuk Scrichatum, was luckier as she was in a hairdressing salon at the time. She told police she heard the sound of metal-on-metal and went outside to investigate. She soon noticed that her own vehicle was now damaged. Investigators said they are still questioning the Swiss gentleman to make a complete report for the insurers. Provisionally, it appears that the farang fell asleep while driving, but it is not known if a prior medical condition may have been to blame.
Following the collapse of part of the main road near to Sukhumvit 69 thanks to heavy rain, Pattaya officials say that the city authorities have received 11 million baht to undertake much-needed repair and resurfacing work. Inthana Construction Company has agreed to carry out the project, but has not yet given any firm dates. Parts of Sukhumvit, south bound, are now restricted to two lanes and there is a real danger to life and limb from carelesslydriven vehicles. Another problem concerns the huge traffic jams which have been occurring for the past two months.

Laos woman attempts suicide Sawangboriboon volunteers rushed to a construction site in Soi 13, Jomtien, after hearing that a young dog had been stabbed by a malevolent person with a metal rod. Rescuers managed to remove the stick and rushed the animal to a veterinary clinic where it was declared to be out of danger. Construction workers at the site said they would pay the medical bills.
Rubber band distresses young girl
Doctors at Banglamung Hospital removed a curled-up, blue rubber band from the nostril of a 4-year-old girl who had been complaining of feeling unwell and having a fever for more than a month. Parents said they noticed their daughter often seemed to have a runny nose but put this down to a cold which was certainly persistent. Medical staff said it appeared that she had been playing with the rubber band when the accident occurred, unbeknown to the parents.
American jumps to his doom A Laos national, identified as Miss Nok, was so depressed after discovering her husband was being unfaithful that she tried to jump to her death from an overpass on Sukhumvit Road in the Naklua district. However, police quickly blocked the road and managed to calm down the woman until they were able to rescue her from the 6-meter high bridge. She was said to be pregnant and had previously attempted to kill herself. On that occasion she had been taken to Banglamung Hospital but had checked herself out. She told investigators she was devastated by reports of her husband’s infidelity.
Staff at a tall condo on Central Road reported that a foreigner lay dead near the swimming pool after apparently leaping of his own volition from the 27th floor. American Douglas Rex Hart, 52, was not known to condominium workers and it is possible he was a visitor and not a resident. However, some of his clothes were found in an apartment which had been rented by a woman. Investigators believe that he may have had a quarrel with the woman or felt let down by her. There was a suicide note which was sent for investigation, but it is believed to have stressed his lack of finances and his inability to pay for a new passport, the old one being full. The American Embassy in Bangkok has been alerted.

Push for more British tourists
Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) at the World Travel Market 2014 (WTM) in London.
British travel agents are predicting a late rush of British vacationers to Thailand after the introduction of several short-term measures by the Thai government. These include allowing EU nationals to extend their one-month visa exemption on arrival by a further 30 days at Thai immigration. “People now know that they do not need a Thai visa in advance to be able to stay in the country up to two months,” said a representative of Thomson Holidays which specializes in charter flights.
Another advantage for those wanting to visit Cambodia as well as Thailand is that joint visas, if required, are available at Thai consulates in Europe. That means that EU nations are able to visit both Thailand and Cambodia without the additional hassle and queuing associated with the Cambodian visa regulations. James Bell, managing director of Turquoise Holidays in Britain, said that most Brits now understood that Thailand was a safe country to visit and

that martial law regulations would not affect them. There has also been an online campaign in social media, including the Thailand Fan Club: UK and Ireland on facebook, which has 40,000 fans and helps to encourage people to re-visit Thailand. Several airlines now fly directly from the Middle East to Phuket, stimulating that market, although the use of Pattaya airport (U-Tapao) for flights originating beyond Southeast Asia remains small for the time being.
Tourism minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said her ministry was projecting a total of 6.9 million visitors to Thailand over the current high season, injecting 64 billion baht into the economy. The UK market alone was worth 68 million baht. She added that the Thai government was anxious to sign deals with neighboring countries, apart from Cambodia, to offer joint-visas in order to attract increasing numbers of travelers, especially from Europe.

Melbourne Cup 2014 at Pullman Pattaya Hotel G by Nancy Aly-Hegazy
Every year, on the first Tuesday in November, Melbourne hosts the spectacular horse race that stops the nation, The Melbourne Cup, held every year since 1861. This year, the Pattaya International Ladies Club (PILC) in collaboration with the Pullman Pattaya Hotel G decided to get in on all the excitement and host a Melbourne Cup event right here in Pattaya. In line with the ‘fashions on the field’ and ‘dress to impress’ theme associated with the event, over 100 ladies (and a handful of gents) made their way over to the Pullman Hotel on the Tuesday morning dressed in their finest, most fabulous outfits and spectacular looking hats. The morning started off in great style with a photo shoot, and a much needed cold glass of bubbly for the glamorous attendees. This was soon followed by a resort-style fashion show, provided to us by one of Pattaya’s favorite designers, Louisa, and her wonderful label Regardez-Moi. Meanwhile guests were invited to enjoy a very elegant canapé style buffet that included a live sushi station! Race time saw the crowd hushed and the volume turned up as we all tuned in to watch the race that in this instance stopped two nations, the 154th Melbourne Cup live from Flemington Racecourse. The thought of winning one of the prizes on offer from the Cup Sweep only added to the excitement of the big day.
PILC and their generous sponsors, the Pullman Hotel, Regardez-Moi, Breeze Jewelry and Jeff Thomsen leather goods all provided the prizes for the Cup Sweeps. Congratulations to all the winners who won among other things, spa vouchers, hotel accommodation, handbags, jewelry, food and beverage vouchers as well as bottles of wine! The Cup Sweeps, as well as being lots of fun, allowed PILC to raise over 50,000 baht for its various charities.
Dressage and Special Needs by Derek Franklin
The second annual “Able the Disabled” countryside challenge took place at Horseshoe Point Pattaya. Twenty children and teenagers, all with varying special needs, competed over a series of challenges, all with the hope of lifting the winner’s trophy. Organized by Sandra Cooper, and her wonderful team of dedicated volunteers, the competition saw the children riding horses while performing a series of activities, all under the watchful gaze of the judges. While the competition looked a lot of fun, there was a serious side to the event. The Able the Disabled Foundation has been providing weekly hippotherapy therapy sessions for several years, with the aim of improving the posture and balance as well as increasing muscle strength to children with Down’s
syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism and other intellectual disabilities. Due to the varying levels of ability, the children competed in two categories: those who were able to trot while on a horse and those whose horse walked around the course. The aim of the competition was to judge the children on their skills, not just the way they rode their mount, but also the way they balanced themselves, controlled their horse and used their motor skills to perform a set of activities. Activities included guiding the horse around a series of large plastic animals, picking fruit of a tree and dropping it into a bucket, posting a letter in the postbox, all while sitting on the back of a horse. Many of the children competing attend the Father Ray Center for Children with Special
Needs, and there were also two international competitors from Russia, who, like all the
other children competing, received a medal for their efforts.

Citrus Parc Hotel Brings Extra Zest to the Foothills of Pratumnak Hill, Pattaya
by Mick and Di Barker
The newly opened Citrus Parc Hotel flung its doors open the beginning of April 2014 and is already a popular and staple hotel on the landscape at the foothills of Pratumnak Hill. This European styled collection of houses and shops to be known as Parc Mall had sparked our interest for some time so it was with great curiosity that we accepted the invitation to book in for the night and enjoy the Citrus Parc experience. Staying in a brand new hotel is a top event. Everything sparkles with newness and even smells so bandbox fresh there is intoxication similar to that “new car” aroma. The décor is contemporary with on-trend muted colors, ash colored wood but with unexpected bursts of modern vibrant color combinations. Its exact location is Soi 12, Thappraya Road at the top of the road leading down to Pattaya Park Tower and a short distance from the excitement of downtown Pattaya with its vibrant nightlife, glitzy hotels and swanky shopping malls. The Parc Mall will open in the not too distant future, and will boast its own international branded shopping mall and a soon to arrive French restaurant. Check-in was smooth and brisk, the staff friendly and accommodating and our room bright and cheerful with its ocean blue palate décor and clean modern lines. The hotel features 119 guestrooms from the deluxe

East Coast Kitchen
at Holiday Inn Pattaya
Chicken Satay Australian Beef Tenderloin Holiday Inn Pattaya auspiciously opened its Executive Tower on August 1, 2014. It boasts 200 additional lavishly appointed rooms on 25 floors of ultra modern interior design. The signature all-day dining outlet is East Coast Kitchen and it was here that Mick and I visited recently to sample the cuisine that Chef Vichuda and her team produce daily from the crack of dawn (6 a.m.) to 10 p.m. Buffet breakfasts segue into brunch and lunch continuing throughout the day with snacks and refreshments until 6 p.m. when the new on trend “market concept” menu is served highlighting their live cooking stations and their international evening menu. A vibrant color palate of orange and turquoise welcomes as you step through the entrance revealing the contemporary subtleness of ash wood fittings complete with cozy lounge style seating and a stunning panoramic view of the bay. Although the buffet breakfast finishes mid morning their signature breakfast is available all day for lovers of eggs, bacon, sausages and hash browns. We were visiting however to enjoy the evening menu and were to be served a selection of chef’s main courses. The popular market concept is to allow diners to choose the item of their choice – be it fish or meat – and pass it to one of the
Tiger Prawns chefs with exact instructions on your preference of cooking. “From the Grill” menu offers Australian beef tenderloin (B.980), Angus beef rib eye steak (B.980), 300 grams of the heritage breed Kurobuta pork, chop style (B.980), Australian lamb rack (B.900), tiger prawns (B.720), Atlantic salmon fillet (B.620) and chicken breast (B.590). All prices are inclusive of tax and service. The price of the item includes a side dish of your choice (mashed potatoes, garden salad, French fries, grilled vegetables or steamed rice) and a gourmet selection of sauces such as mushroom, peppercorn, red wine Hollandaise or Café de Paris butter. And as part of ongoing promotion, guests can also enjoy the salad bar and a glass of selected wine.
Our evening commenced with a glass of Berri Estates Bin 222 a delightful Australian Chardonnay at B.300 per glass. The wines are a premier mix of some of the best labels from Australia, Chile, New Zealand, South Africa and France, with a celebratory bottle of French Champagne available for B.550 by the glass or B.3,000 for the bottle. The first dish to hit the table was Australian beef tenderloin weighing in at 250 grams complemented by an egg, caper and mustard dressing and presented with French fries and rocket. This was a prime cut of beef, lean yet tender, juicy and flavorful and exactly cooked to our taste at medium-rare. To pair with this we were sipping on a glass of Stonefish Cabernet Sauvignon from Western
Australia which made very good friends indeed with the gourmet beef. The Kurobuta pork chops come served with mashed potatoes, sautéed mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and a red wine jus while fish lovers would be well served with the beer battered fish and chips or the Atlantic salmon fillet with signature Café de Paris butter sauce. The next dish for us to try was a spinach and ricotta cannelloni baked in the oven with a tomato and mozzarella cheese sauce. Our dinner companion, the charming Khun Cindy from their Marketing Department was eager to try this dish as she is an enthusiastic vegetarian. She loved it and so did I. Next up was chicken satay (B.230) escorted by peanut sauce and cucumber relish. The sticks were presented in a thick slice of grilled pineapple.

For a taste of Thailand we were also served a first rate phad Thai talay which was followed by a taste of the Mediterranean with three huge grilled prawns served on a bed of charred yellow and green peppers accompanied by a pepper sauce. Steak sandwich, a beach burger of 100 percent beef topped with bacon, cheese, onion, tomato and lettuce accompanied by French fries is another bestseller while, we were told, the pastas are always popular. COCO GARDEN
RESORT & SPORTS BAR
Posh Nosh, Bowling, Beer and Skittles!
This unique lifestyle destination opened four years ago and sported a long bar, restaurant, four villas and a thatched lawn bowling area. Today, the newly rebranded Coco Garden Resort and Sports Bar boasts eight villas nestling in the now mature garden and a 1,000-sqm covered sports area. The expansion now makes this inimitable resort the first of its kind in Thailand and the only covered lawn bowl facility in the country. Still firmly at the helm are its co-founding partners Sue and Derek Bryant who both share a love of good food and lawn bowling, Sue being a proud member of the Thailand national team.
Set in the rural Huay Yai countryside, near Phoenix Golf Club, the resort is now firmly established with the local community and expats in the area. Coco Garden Resort is a singular destination offering all the comforts of home in their eight 80-sqm villas, a long comfy bar and a full restaurant complex. Wander through the gardens past the pool and you will discover their newly kitted out sports facility. Fully covered and green carpeted it is the perfect setting for all sports fans. Ten different sports are catered for: lawn bowls, short bowls, croquet, boccia, petanque, floor skittles, table skittles, darts, American pool and for the more sedate players, chess. At the nerve center of Coco’s restaurant is Chef Sue who indelibly implants her own twist on the dishes that leave this kitchen. It must be said Coco’s is indeed tucked away, but once found, we’re sure you’ll be visiting again and again. For parties of four or more just call the phone number at the end of this article and the resort’s bus will whisk you out there and transport you back at the end of your Coco experience. Chef Sue fuses the flavors of cuisines resulting in signature dishes crying out with authenticity but also with her inimitable stamp. Prices here are exceedingly reasonable. The three-course set meal is only B.375 and Mick and I had been invited recently to sample the current menu. We had arrived a little early for dinner in order to catch the last few “ends” of the bowling game in progress. These players are champions from around the world
and the game was fueled with enthusiasm and clear motivation. It is only B.125 to play here (4 hours) and we both made a mental note to get together with a few friends, in the near future, and discover if our sporting talents should lie in this direction. Combo meals are available for as little as B.100 and the bar is well stocked for any convivial get-together. We heard from Derek that evening parties can be arranged and also that it is proving a popular venue for corporations engaged in all-day team building activities or as an offduty experience for their staff. Now back in the flamboyant fantasia of Coco’s décor, we sat back, sipped our wine and admired the swathed ceilings and draped furnishings that enhance the eclecticism of the vibrant decor. The house wine is only B.80 by the glass and B.150 (1/2 liter) by the carafe. Our starters were then served; sea scallops in a lemon white emulsion and stuffed Portobello mushrooms accompanied by prawns. The scallops were caramelized to precision resulting in soft, sweet and pillowy treats and the sauce a delight. Our other dish was an unusual salad. A mountain of diced avocado had been tossed with cherry tomatoes and coriander leaf and then encircled with finely cubed bacon. Layers of flavors complemented the whole and the Asian dressing again added another element to this elegant dish. We enjoyed the beefy mushrooms with their rich earthy stuffing and with its accompaniment of chubby, sweet prawns. To follow we enjoyed pink duck breast served with wild rice
topped with roasted rice with a Thai fusion chili hot and sour dressing. We couldn’t leave without tasting one of Chef Sue’s famous desserts. Apple strudel with lime ice cream and a chocolate lava cake with a creamy vanilla ice cream decorated with biscuit spears. Sound good? They were ambrosial – the deeply rich dark molten chocolate seeping into the sweetness of the ice cream, the finest of filo pastry fracturing under the fork to reveal its cinnamon apple heart and that lime ice cream were all friends made in heaven. Do plan ahead as reservations are required ideally 24 hours in advance or before midday on your planned visit and do remember that pick-up service which provides complimentary transport to and from the restaurant. Coco Garden Resort is a neighborhood gem where sporty types can play the day away and bon vivants can enjoy the joys of Chef Sue’s kitchen. It really is a gourmet oasis in the hinterland of Huay Yai. With Derek front of house and Sue catering it is no wonder that these tables are some of the most soughtafter in the area. For posh nosh at bargain prices – it’s got to be Coco Garden Resort and Sports Bar. How to get there: Drive out on Sukhumvit Road towards Sattahip and take the turning to Phoenix Golf Club. Follow the road through the village and take the next right turn. Further signs to the club on this road. Reservations essential for the restaurant (evenings only). Pickup service available. Reversing the Effects of Aging with Chelation Therapy Chelation therapy is the process of removing from the body the undesirable ionic material by the use of compounds taken intravenously or orally to bind metals present in toxic concentrations so they can be excreted from the body. The word chelation is derived from the Greek word chele that means claw (like that of a scorpion or crab). The concept of chelation by Dr. Natnicha Loichuen is based on the observation that when a certain amino acid complex called EDTA (ethylene-diaminetetra-acetic acid) comes in contact with certain positively charged metals and other substances such as lead, iron,
HOW CHELATION THERAPY WORKS Blocks Calcium Absorption, Repairs Damaged Muscles, Improves the Cell Energy Production We have seen that calcium passes through the damaged cell walls into the cells. If calcium gets deposited in arterial walls, it inhibits the enzyme activity which, in turn, affects the production of energy, the movement of raw material, finished products, and waste products from the cell. The cells become energy starved and become acidic as a result. This can lead to premature aging, unbalanced calcium/ magnesium ratios, free radical activity, local toxicity, oxygen deficit, nutritional imbalance, etc. How does EDTA infusion affect this scenario? First, EDTA removes the toxic metal ions such as lead, calcium, mercury, cadmium, copper, iron, and aluminum from the bloodstream. These
copper, calcium, magnesium, zinc, plutonium and manganese, it grabs them and removes them. EDTA is used to draw out toxins from the blood and fatty deposits in blood vessel walls. This treatment helps open up the blood vessel lumen, leading to good circulation. It can benefit people with coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, heavy smokers and alcoholics, and those with high density of toxins in the body. One way to think about the chelation process is to compare it to the way we unclog our drains. When we add a chemical to our drain, it dissolves the blockage. The resulting compound is removed from the drain using the existing plumbing system. Chelation process works in a similar manner on our body.
are necessary for the production of free radicals. By removing the extra calcium from the bloodstream, there is no more free calcium available to produce plaque. It means that the cells can start to repair themselves. Their production of energy increases. As more and more cells rebuild, our body becomes healthier. They can ward off intruders. The result is that we have started a salvage and regeneration activity that repairs previously damaged muscles and heart. And the whole body benefits as a result. Reversing the Effects of Aging One of the more dramatic effects of chelation therapy is the diminishment of the fine lines at the outer corner of the smile lines of the eyes and a return of softer, more supple-looking skin. Aging involves hard arteries and soft bones. The process of aging is what
researchers and doctors call calcinosis, meaning calcium is pulled from the bones and deposited into soft tissue, settling in your arteries, joints and skin, causing arthritis and the pale, hard, wrinkled look of aging. Calcium deposits can also cause strokes and circulation problems. Chelation therapy removes calcium from the soft tissues, where it doesn’t belong, and puts it back into the bones, where it does belong.
Hotel Promotions Perfect Pattaya Fireworks Festival at Pattaya Marriott Resort & Spa
Other Benefits Reduction of fatigue in patients who have undergone chelation therapy is another important benefit of chelation therapy. Other improvements are in the reduction of neurological symptoms, cardiovascular symptoms, skin conditions, respiratory symptoms, gastrointestinal, genital and urinary symptoms.

Get a Leg Up on Looking Good Want to keep your legs looking great and youthful? Do your best to avoid varicose veins. Too many women—and men as well—sit with their legs crossed. If anything will encourage the onset of those twisted, enlarged veins near the surface of the skin in your legs, it’s crossing your legs. Don’t do it! Cross your legs at the ankles if you must cross. Regular exercise also is important to help prevent varicose veins. Even just a brisk 15-minute walk will promote healthy circulation and reduce the likelihood of unsightly veins popping out. It also helps prevent weight gain. Do your best to avoid long periods of inactive standing, and elevate your legs whenever possible. While varicose veins usually aren’t serious, they can sometimes lead to other problems, including aches and swelling. For most, however, they are simply a cosmetic problem. Are you at risk? Consider the following factors that contribute to the risk of developing varicose veins: 1. Genetics. Varicose veins tend to run in families.
2. Age and weight. The older you are and the more you weigh, the higher your risk. 3. Hormonal changes. Among women, hormonal changes associated with puberty, pregnancy and menopause can increase the risk of developing varicose veins, as can birth control pills and other drugs containing estrogen and progesterone. (The good news is that veins that enlarge during pregnancy tend to become smaller again after giving birth.) 4. Incorrect sitting position. If you tend to cross your legs while sitting, you may increase your chances of developing varicose veins. 5. Inactivity. If you already have varicose veins, wear compression stockings. If you need treatment or you are concerned about how the veins look, your options may include the following procedures to close off or remove the vein: • Sclerotherapy. • Laser treatment. • Radiofrequency treatment. • Phlebectomy or stab avulsion. • Ligation and stripping.

automotive The All-New Honda Mobilio RS 7-Seat People Mover or Spacious Family Sedan?
Vol. 02 No. 22 | Nov 16-30 2014
Some call it people carrier or MPV (multi-purpose vehicle). In India they call it MUV – multi-utility vehicle. Whatever you choose to name it by John K. Lindgren the seven-seater Editor-in-chief: family car is now carsanook.com here to thrive. Pattaya Today Automotive tests the all-new Honda Mobilio developed and manufactured in Thailand. First impression, the face has the typical new Honda, kind of Brio look; the bulbous LED-projector headlamps and a large solid chrome grille. The bumper boasts a cool two-tone finish. Then, the dynamic sculpted side profile spells it out, the “lightning-bolt
beltline” in Honda speak. Slightly avant-garde not the run-of-the-mill boxy MPV styling. Check out the rear with the blackedout glass D-pillar giving the Honda Mobilio a sporty saloon look including a tailgate spoiler, big LED-brake lights and a new rear bumper design. Plus the red “RS” badge indicating this is the top-grade version (priced at 739,000 baht). Space is first thing that strikes you when you step inside. Black interior, three rows of comfortable fabric seats that can be easily folded into various combinations to offer maximum flexibility. With 60:40 split the second row seats fold up in one, swift convenient flip. There’s plenty of legroom and headroom. Five adults and two children ride comfortably and
for the second row passengers there’s a roof mounted A/C. Behind, in the boot you’ll fit two aircraft cabin-luggage-sized suitcases, even with third row seating. The latter can fold to free up more cargo space, to fit lots of more stuff. The large tailgate with a low loading-lip makes handling of heavy, bulky stuff easy. No more back pain. Interior features include the entertainment center with a 7-inch touchscreen providing Bluetooth, USB, iPod connectivity and the good ol’ AM/ FM radio. When you reverse the screen becomes the rearview parking camera. This is what you need when reversing into dark spaces, especially during the monsoon rains. All those pillars, trees and walls. Under Honda Mobilio’s compact hood
is the rev happy Honda 1.5 liter i-VTEC petrol powerplant pumping out 120 horsepower and 145 Nm of torque. The smooth-shifting CVT automatic gearbox also boasts an “L” (Low gear) and “S” (Sport) option. Fuel consumption circa 16.5-17 kpl. Furthermore, the engine is E-20 (mixture of 20 percent ethanol and 80 percent petrol) compliant. On the move, the Mobilio drives and feels like a long, light sedan. A Japanese sedan. There’s none of that (delivery) van like feel. Good visibility, easy to make U-turns, do the school run and park at the mall; all the daily routines on the urban circuit. On the highways and byways we noticed, quick lane changes no problem. Overall, a balanced ride and adequately ABS powered brakes. What also helps is the solid, nicely sculpted steering wheel with multifunction audio controls. Honda still makes the best steering wheels in non-premium segment. As a long distance highway runner, the Mobilio is reasonably powerful, and you won’t have a problem reaching three-digit speeds, provided you’re not overloaded. So if you’re looking for a new car and need space but you don’t want a van or
a mini-bus, here’s what’s available in the market: Toyota Avanza (699,000), Suzuki Ertiga (689,000), Proton Exora (789,000), Nissan Livina (742,000) and Chevrolet Spin (762,000) – and the new kid on the block, Honda Mobilio in three trims – the basic S, regular V and the top-grade RS. The entry level S uses a five-speed stick shift, the V and the RS models come with automatic transmission. Honda Mobilio a people mover, yes. But also a practical, stylish family saloon. Prices start from 597,000 baht. We would recommend the RS version at 739,000 with all the bells and whistles. (Thumbs up for the rearview camera!) Need more upgrading? There is a Modulo accessories package offering you mirror caps, front and rear bumper protectors, exhaust pipe finisher, and headlight and taillight garnishes. Next step? Pimp your people mover, MPV or MUV! Honda Mobilio RS Engine: 1,497 cc Power: 120 horsepower Maximum torque: 145 Nm Fuel consumption: 17 kpl (E20) Price: 739,000 baht www.honda.co.th

Legal & Expat Money
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Expat Money Corner by Tim Whiteley
Income from capital in retirement
by Magna Carta Law Office
Thai Inheritance Law What happens to my assets in Thailand if I don’t have a last will and testament? In Thailand, when a person dies without a last will and testament, the intestate’s assets must be distributed in accordance with the law. As stipulated in the Civil and Commercial Code Section 1629, there are six classes of statutory heirs in Thailand. Each class is entitled to inherit in the following order: 1. descendants 2. parents 3. brothers and sisters of full blood 4. brothers and sisters of half blood 5. grandfathers and grandmothers 6. uncles and aunts The right of a surviving spouse to share in the estate of a deceased spouse arises automatically from marital status. Spouses who are under separation do not lose the right of inheritance to one another as long as divorce between them has not been granted according to law. Ordinances awarding such rights on a surviving spouse make the spouse a statutory heir. Before any distribution of the estate to the relatives, half of the estate (community property or in Thai, sin somros) will belong to the spouse, if any, and the other half will be distributed accordingly. Can a foreigner acquire a free-hold condominium by inheritance? A foreigner who acquires a condominium unit by inheritance, either as a legal heir under a last will and testament or as a statutory heir, shall acquire the property ownership if the condominium unit is within the foreign quota and the foreigner qualifies for ownership. Otherwise, it is required by law that the foreigner shall dispose of the unit within one year from the date of acquisition. If it is not disposed of within such period of time, the DirectorGeneral of Land Department shall have the power to sell the condominium unit on the foreigner’s behalf. Can a foreigner acquire a land by inheritance? Foreigners are not allowed to own or inherit land in Thailand. Any foreigner who inherits land must dispose of the land within one year as prescribed by the Director-General of Land Department. If such time period elapses, the Director-General shall have power to dispose of such land. Can a leasehold property be inherited? A major disadvantage of lease in Thailand is that the contract and the right of possession is terminated upon death of the lessee and is not automatically transferable by inheritance. Although the lease agreement must include a succession clause, this does not offer full legal guarantee for the lessee’s heirs.
The creditors of an estate are entitled to be paid only out of the property of the estate. Debts due by the estate shall be paid in the following order and in accordance with the provisions of the Thailand Civil and Commercial Code concerning preferential rights: 1. expenses incurred for the common benefit of the estate 2. expenses incurred for the funeral of the deceased 3. taxes and rates due by the estate 4. wages due by the deceased to any clerk, servant or workman 5. supplies of daily necessities made to the deceased 6. remuneration for the administrator Unless otherwise provided by the deceased or by law, the property of the deceased shall be appropriated to the payment of debts in the following order: 1. property other than immovable property 2. immovable property expressly appropriated to that purpose by will, if any 3. immovable property to which the statutory heirs are entitled as such 4. immovable property bequeathed to a person upon the condition that he shall pay the debts of the deceased 5. immovable property bequeathed under general title 6. any specific property bequeathed under a particular title Any property appropriated under the foregoing provisions shall be sold by way of public auction, but any heir may prevent such sale by paying, to the extent required for the satisfaction of the creditors, the value of the whole or part of the property as may be determined by an appraiser appointed by the court. A statutory heir or a legatee under a general title is not bound to execute legacies under a particular title for more than the amount of property received by him. The administrator is not bound to deliver the estate or any part thereof to the heirs before one year has elapsed from deceased’s date of death, unless all the known creditors of the estate and legatees have been satisfied by the performance and distribution.
How are debts due by the estate being managed?

Most of us in semi- or permanent retirement are reliant, to a lesser or greater extent, on our remaining nest egg and pension to provide us with an income that will keep the proverbial wolf from the door. Looking back, in recent years, the results of leaving our hard-earned cash to the vagaries of the world’s stock market would have sent a shudder through most people’s spine. Banks are paying next to nothing, so where does that leave those of us that require a reasonable return on our investments, without risking the shirt off our back? Some of the funds that have shone brightly throughout the financial crisis and beyond are those that are now commonly referred to as “non-correlated”, which simply means they are not connected to the stock markets. In real terms, this generally means investments that are in niche sectors, where the demand curve is very strong, at least for the medium term. There are a number of examples of fund managers operating in such sectors that have shown themselves to be extremely resilient to the economic turmoil. There is also a reasonable selection of good, broad-based, managed funds with holdings spread across a number of asset classes, which have benefitted from the intrinsic diversification of the holdings. In addition, ‘Warren Buffett-esque’ type funds can be found. They do only invest in the stock markets, with the caveat that they hold only blue chip stock. The concept’s mission is to manage investments by carefully buying and selling only where necessary, with a view to capturing a good chunk of the market upsides, while minimizing downturns. Take an example that probably applies to large numbers of expatriates around the world. They have perhaps sold a house in their home country and purchased one abroad and, in addition, have other assets that amount to several hundred thousand pounds/dollars, excluding pensions. Let’s take a test case: Mr. X has a house and 300,000 GBP/USD in cash from savings. Applying those funds to a bank deposit, he is likely, in the current climate, to receive perhaps 2-2.5 percent on a three-year fixed term deposit, which would result in an income of 6,000-7,000 GBP/USD from his lump sum. As an alternative, certain non-correlated and managed funds, available through major international institutions, have conservatively achieved around 6 percent, net of all management costs. That same man has now increased his interest income from 6,000 or 7,000 GBP/USD per annum to 18,000 GBP/USD. For those of us looking to preserve our capital, while still maintaining a decent lifestyle, this is significant. Our feeling is that carefully chosen funds have provided a real alternative for those trying to make their assets work for them. The fund examples I’ve mentioned have slightly different risk profiles. Nonetheless, they could all be described as between ‘cautious’ and ‘balanced’. This approach can often result in pretty stable, consistent results. In summary, individuals can look further afield than bank deposits to improve returns, without taking giant leaps up the ‘risk’ ladder. Pattaya is Replacing Phuket! Three years ago I wrote an article which asked the question: Is Pattaya Replacing Phuket? Over the few years prior to that 2011 article I wrote that I had come close to comparing the real estate markets in the rival resort cities, but I didn’t because Phuket was still basking in the glow of having been one of the most idyllic places in the world to holiday and live. Phuket maintained a magical aura for many years. Just a couple of years ago I suggested that Pattaya’s luxury home designs are beginning to rival those of Phuket and that market in Pattaya was in its early stages as luxury home buyers were just beginning to see Pattaya and the Eastern Seaboard with new eyes. I prefaced those remarks with comments about how Phuket’s enchantment made it almost impossible to compete with by any other locations in Thailand, let alone Pattaya. Having said that, the more I pondered those thoughts the more I witnessed Phuket’s image as the dream location for luxury homes fall further and further behind in the race. In that same article three years ago, I wrote about two Dutch tourists who were assaulted by minibus drivers in Phuket after the visitors refused to pay 1,000 baht in damages for having walked into a parked minibus in Patong. Then there was the murder of a Swedish expat who was ambushed and stabbed to death by a gang of about 12 Thai men in full view of his neighbors in Phuket! Remember when 472 passengers aboard the Silver Spirit cruise liner
were about to embark on their special minivan tours of Phuket but never made it? It seems that not one of those 472 passengers was allowed off the ship because it was blocked by some 200 angry taxi drivers. Those tourists’ dream holiday in paradise was ruined, and many vowed to never return. Well all of that was about three years ago. Now, just in the last week or so, I was reminded of just how far Phuket continues to fall as I read more and more gruesome tales of that magic kingdom lost. Recently, on October 29, the incredible Phuket headline, 'Foot in face sparked triple murder rage.’ It was a case in which a triple-murder suspect turned himself in to police, confessing to the killing of his wife and both her parents because his mother in-law shoved her foot in his face. A day later another headline read, ‘Phuket road rage shooting suspect surrenders,’ accompanied by a photo of police General Patchara holding a mug shot of the 62-year-old man wanted for shooting dead a Phuket motorbike taxi driver on the road while being videotaped in broad daylight. And earlier this month, of course, there was the slash and rape in Phuket when a young Thai man on a bike was stopped by three men who beat him and then stabbed him in the chest. And later the headline, ‘Aussie jogger fights off would-be Phuket rapist?’ In this incident, a female Australian teacher heroically fought off a would-be rapist who grabbed her while jogging near the beach; she reportedly dealt some severe injuries to her attacker.

Am I trying to destroy Phuket’s dream vacation reputation? Absolutely not. I am simply pointing out that in contrast to Phuket, Pattaya and the entire Eastern Seaboard are looking better and better every year. I can see more and more tourists and long-term residents taking a longer and harder look at all that Pattaya has to offer foreigners in a lifestyle that cannot be matched in all of Thailand. Yes, I said it: a lifestyle that cannot be matched in all of Thailand! What island or other resort can you visit anywhere in Southeast Asia where you can find the international infrastructure that Pattaya has? Not one! Am I bullish on Thailand’s Eastern Seaboard? You bet I am! I see Pattaya moving in the right direction and that direction is making many foreigners think twice about choosing any other location to purchase property and live. As Pattaya continues to grow and grow, Walking Street and similar venues become less and less significant. Don’t get me wrong, Pattaya’s exciting nightlife remains a major attraction to people of all ages and all nations. But beyond those eager to take that exotic ‘walk on the wild side,’ each and every day Pattaya attracts more and more visitors to the ‘Family Friendly Holiday’ table. These holiday impressions are driving a thriving real estate market to build more and more houses and condominiums. We are seeing unprecedented sales in both detached houses and

pre-construction condominium apartments. For several years already we have been seeing new and innovative condominium and detached housing designs that rival what is offered in Phuket. The Pattaya and Eastern Seaboard have some impressive Thai-Balinese designed homes, some fantastic examples of modern design that have proven to be popular and a good selection of original home designs coming out of the creative minds of Thai and foreign designers. With more reasons to live here than in any other resort, we are also seeing house and condominium designs that make living here even more appealing. Yes, I’ve wanted to say this for years; I did say it three years ago, and I am here saying it again. “Watch out Phuket, because Thailand’s Eastern Seaboard is about to show you a thing or two about resort house and condo design.” We already have world class condominiums like Raimon Land’s Northpoint, Major Development’s Reflection, the Nova Group’s The Palm and very soon The Riviera Wongamat and Jomtien. Success recipe at Centara Grand Mirage Beach Resort by Barry Kenyon
Much more than an elite five-star Pattaya hotel With 555 luxurious and spacious rooms and suites all facing the ocean, Centara Grand Mirage in North Pattaya is Asia’s only themed hotel on its own beachfront and is currently celebrating its fifth anniversary. But what precisely makes it so special?
t
he theme, by the way, is The Lost World which subtly pervades the 75,000 square meters of gardens, amenities and facilities which make up this emblem of the Pattaya hospitality industry. The Lost World has a long history. The 1864 Jules Verne novel Journey to the Center of the Earth was followed in 1912 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World, both of which have spawned countless movies in which prehistoric monsters are on hand to liven up the otherwise dreary existence of humankind.
General manager Andre Brulhart believes it’s impossible to overstate the significance of The Lost World theme. “There have been many imitators and themes of architecture or buccaneers, or whatever, are now common in newly built Pattaya hotels or condos,” but Centara Group was the first and is now comfortably the biggest investor in Thailand’s hospitality industry. It’s also true, of course, that The Lost World theme has a particular resonance with children who have certainly heard about dinosaurs if not the novelists of yesteryear.
Centara Grand Mirage has recently expanded and updated its all-action family water park to include Monsoon Island, a new zone for wet and wild water fun for younger guests with its water sprays, water gun shooters, water ratchet, water umbrella, water flower, waterspout and a jumbo water bucket mounted on a tower. On Monsoon Island you will get wet, for sure! Located near Oceans Restaurant and the pool terrace, Monsoon Island joins three swimming pools, 12 waterslides, the waterfalls, lazy river and the rope bridges of the jungle Lost World water park which lead directly onto Wong Amat beach. A Swiss national and graduate of the Lausanne Hotel Management School, Andre Brulhart has over 30 years experience mainly in Asia. He began his career with Centara in 2005 and a series of promotions quickly followed. He became general manager of Centara Grand Mirage
Beach Resort Pattaya in 2010 and in 2013 was promoted to be general manager of Centara Grand at Central Plaza, Ladprao, Bangkok. He is now back in post at Pattaya. “Centara Grand at Ladprao was the very first hotel to be opened by Centara over 30 years ago so it was a great privilege to serve there as GM last year,” he says. Andre takes his job of overseeing the striking 18-storey Grand Mirage very much in his stride. “Thailand has always been my first love since I first visited Bangkok in 1988,” he says. “As soon as the plane touched down I knew that my inner self had found home.” That probably explains why he has spent most his working life in Thailand. As regards managerial success, Andre quotes the 19th century American essayist and champion of individualism Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” He carries that sentiment with him into

everyday life at Grand Mirage dealing with customers, staff and an enormous bureaucracy. Built on original beachfront land of the former Central Wong Amat Beach Resort, yet another secret of success has to be the cool and relaxed atmosphere even when it’s full. “On weekends we may have 1,300 people,” says Andre, “but it never feels like that big number. The secret is the way the hotel was built with all those corners, little gardens, water facilities, tropical vegetation and so on. Even the breakfast tables of the many guests are set in a leisurely and non-hurried atmosphere.” Andre adds that Thais understand the concept of hospitality very well as they have been involved for over 100 years, far longer than their neighbouring Asian competitors. The hospitality industry in Pattaya, as elsewhere, is indeed a competitive business these days. As is well known, the Eastern Seaboard city has made giant strides towards finding a new identity, favorable to families and business, which simply did not exist on any scale 15 years ago. The resort’s income is no longer largely dependent on night time entertainment and its ancillaries.
“For example,” explains Andre, “we will be targeting the expanding MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Exhibitions) market in the future, both domestic and regional. There’s lots of scope here for business promotions and conferences and we have already had a substantial impact by hosting Indian weddings which are huge affairs requiring a host of detail from 24hour buffets to hired elephants appearing on time and at the right place.” Successfully managing hotels is all about adapting to change and indeed being ahead of your competitors. The advent of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2016 which will facilitate free trade and movement of labor throughout the 10-nation trading group is one of the most significant developments which will transform economic and social affairs throughout the region. “Already there is a shortage in the Thai labor market and you can expect to see a growing number of foreign workers from ASEAN partners, especially from countries where English (the international language of ASEAN) is widely used, for example the Philippines. Separately, there is going to be a lot more

travel by individuals and groups across national boundaries, so it’s a sure prediction that more of our guests will come from ASEAN countries and, of course, from China whose population has an insatiable thirst for new vacation experiences.” Indeed, Andre Brulhart knows the
secrets of success in the hospitality industry. Geographical location, high service standards, excellent food and luxurious surroundings are certainly vital. But there’s also the question of leadership skills and predicting the future. And that’s where Andre scores the extra points.

Tips & Advice
What Our
Readers Say
Disgusted by internet
(AJC writes) I realize that farang can’t do anything to change Thailand, but I and many friends have been appalled by the pictures of dead people, particularly in online media and elsewhere on the internet. For example, the close-ups of the corpses of the British couple murdered on Koh Tao island, a case which has now acquired worldwide notoriety, are absolutely disgusting in their explicit nature. I also, by chance, happened upon some socalled news pictures of a motorbike accident in Pattaya which displayed the body of the dead Thai in a revolting fashion, without even any attempt at blurring some of the detail. I am bound to wonder why this sort of thing happens. I have been told that once a person is dead, it no longer matters as the person is no longer present according to Buddhist teaching. But I suspect the real reason is to boost sales of a particular publication or to drive up the number
of hits on certain internet sites. Another matter hard for me to understand is the Thai police practice of requiring some accused people to re-enact their alleged behavior in front of witnesses. So a man who is accused of strangling a luckless woman has to show investigators his exact position when he performed the murder. He then may well be paraded at a press conference to publicize yet another success by the police. But it is surely the case that this sort of practice compromises the trial of the accused as it implies he is guilty before even appearing in court. I do not know of any other country which allows re-enactment and press conferences prior to a court appearance are carefully managed elsewhere. I do accept that I am a guest in Thailand with no right to interfere with its procedures. However, Thai friends tell me they agree with my viewpoint but advise “mai pen rai” or in plain English “don’t get involved”. A: You will need to pay the fine (500 baht a day) irrespective of circumstances as neither the hospital nor any friends visited Immigration on your behalf prior to expiry of your visa. It’s too late now. Just pay up and smile. The only exceptions on overstay fines are the recently or long-term deceased!
Bird watcher quandary Q: I’m a Frenchman and I want to come to Thailand for a full year as I am writing a book on bird watching and need to do a lot of research in the jungles. If I bring a letter with me from the publisher, will the officer at Suvarnabhumi Airport give me more than the 30 days on arrival? I can get the letter translated into Thai if that will help. A: No, you will get 30 days. The right way is to approach the Thai embassy in Paris to request a long visa. It is up to them what documents you will need and what kind of visa they will award you, if any. It’s not clear from your letter if you will spend 12 months in Thailand alone or if you intend to visit other countries with a bird population within that time frame. Extension query Q: I am a British man who recently received 30 days on arrival in Thailand. I was expecting to receive only a 7 days extension at the local Immigration office but in fact was given a further month, i.e. 60 days in all, for a charge of 1,900 baht. I am worried in case a mistake has been made and I will get into trouble later on. A: It’s not a mistake. In late August the Immigration Bureau announced that nationals from 49 countries – who receive 30 days on arrival without further ado – will have their extension period upgraded from one week to one month. This is what has happened in your case and you have nothing to worry about. But you must leave the country within that time span. No more extensions! Overstay again Q: Because I have been in hospital in Thailand after a heart attack, I will be about five weeks overstay visa when I finally leave the country on my delayed flight. Surely I don’t have to pay overstay when it is not my fault. I intend to take the hospital file with me to the airport.
Re-entry confusion Q: I am in Thailand for just under a month which is OK as I received a 30-day stamp on arrival at Suvarnabhumi Airport. I next to intend to go to Cambodia and expect to be there about 10 days. I would then like to return to Thailand for another three weeks before returning to the United States. However I have been told this won’t be possible as you cannot come back again under the new rules. Is that right? A: No. The new regulations are designed to stop people “living” and possibly illegally working in Thailand by repeatedly going on a visa run. This does not remotely describe you. Although full discretion is now vested in the immigration officer on duty at the airport or border post, you should have no problem receiving 30 days on your second entry to Thailand. But keep your travel itinerary, that is your onward flight to US, in your pocket in case you are asked. Retirement visa letter Q: I need a letter to confirm my income from the British Embassy in Bangkok. This is in connection with my retirement visa renewal. As I am physically handicapped I don’t really want to face the journey even if it only takes one day. Also I am not keen to give a friend or an agent my permission to get the letter on my behalf as it means their taking my passport which I don’t like. Is there any alternative? A: You can apply by post, provided you can trust somebody to go to the letter box on your behalf! The embassy needs a copy of the ID page of your passport (no harm in copying the current visa page too) which should be signed. No need to send original passport. You also need to enclose bank statements or other documents to prove your yearly income in your first country. Also write a brief letter of explanation of what is your annual income, referring to your documentation to make matters clear. Don’t forget to include your return address and enclose some proof of where you live, for example a utility bill. As regards the charge, best to look up the embassy site under consular services as the details tends to change with the fortunes of the pound.
Snap Judgment Sex equality and the coup One of the more surprising results of the May 22 coup d’état is that there is a push for third-gender equality. Female members of the recently chosen National Reform Council (NRC) have vowed to try to include protection for gays and other sexual minorities in the new constitution which must be approved before the next general election can occur, probably in early 2016. Less than 40 of the NRC’s 250 members – around 16 percent – are women and some observers fear that the male majority may not be as sympathetic to the idea. But women activists on the NRC are concerned about the gender inequality of alternative-sexuality citizens, stressing that attention to the matter is long overdue. There was a proposal in the former Yingluck Shinawatra government to allow civil partnerships or gay marriage but the matter was never debated in the House of Representatives before that administration fell. No previous Thai constitution has made a mention of the third gender, nor stated its role in society. Although Thailand has a large urban gay scene and a booming social media network, there is little public recognition. Thai comedy shows portray gay people as ridiculously camp transvestites or figures of fun. There is ample evidence of job discrimination against openly gay people or cross-dressers, although it’s less blatant than before. There is virtually no public discussion of third-gender issues in religious houses, except once again on social media. Because gay civil partnerships are not recognized in Thailand, there is a serious problem if a gay Thai chooses to make a will in favor of his or her partner. There is constant confusion between pedophilia and non-threatening sexual identity. NRC member Supatra Nakapiew says that Thai society is becoming more open in spite of official silence. She mentions universities, for example, where alternative sexualities can make a request to the rector to request wearing of the uniform of the gender they choose. There is growing acceptance of cross-dressers in many fields of employment, notably in hairdressing, restaurants and various forms of banking and public administration. It would seem reasonable for Thailand to follow many other countries – including South Africa – in underscoring the right to employment and civil partnerships or marriage as regards sexual minorities. The wish of female members of the NRC to include third-gender equality in the new constitution is also reflected in their other preoccupations. They lament that violence against children and women is still pervasive as is discrimination against the poor in many fields, not least law enforcement where people accused of crimes are much more likely to be jailed if they cannot afford legal services. With the onset of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2016, it is inevitable that equality will be looked at in the 10 countries of the block in the medium term. It would be a bonus if Thailand took a step in drawing up a new constitution in the next 12 months.

Youth Focus Young guests at Holiday Inn Pattaya enjoy an adventure in English! There was no time to relax by the pool for staff at Holiday Inn Pattaya and Regents International School Pattaya on October 25-26. The British boarding school and the family-friendly hotel worked together over the busy Chulalongkorn weekend to offer children on vacation two fun-filled days of English-language activities. ‘Adventures in English’ is the British
school’s unique English-language activity program, designed to show children aged between 5 and 13 how much fun learning English can be. Over the course of two days, Jamie – one of the teachers at Regents – and his assistant Ning guided the children through activities like ‘the jungle’ and ‘the underwater world’. These adventures took place in the
hotel’s colorful Kids’ Club, where the youngsters laughed, learnt some new English phrases and created some wonderful artwork. “At Holiday Inn Pattaya, we celebrate family time, and the precious moments families can have on holiday together. Adventures in English is one of our various activities made keeping in mind our very special guests – kids. This activity combines fun with learning, giving moms and dads the chance to make their kids’ holiday truly memorable one. Kids are really special to us. That’s why at Holiday Inn Hotels and Resorts worldwide, kids stay and eat for free – making it that much easier to turn holiday dreams into reality without breaking your budget!” said Kate Gerits, general manager of Holiday Inn Pattaya Tim Eaton of Regents International School Pattaya commented, “As a British boarding school based in the countryside
beyond Pattaya, we’re a popular choice with parents, particularly those living in the capital who don’t want their children to spend all their time in Bangkok. We have students of 50 different nationalities enrolled here, so we are truly an international school, but Thai families are such an important part of our community and the children we met this weekend were really enthusiastic learners.” Both the hotel and the school are looking forward to offering another round of Adventures in English later this year. For more information, contact adventures@ regents-pattaya.co.th or contact the hotel on info@holidayinn-pattaya.com.
of the most elaborately designed yet and prizes were given to the best models and the ones that were the most seaworthy. Tim Eaton of Regents said, “As a British international school in Thailand,
we take great pride in understanding and embracing the traditions and customs of our host country. We are part of the wider community and it is events like these that can bring people together.”
Regents International School Pattaya embrace Loy Krathong festival with a whole-school celebration by Alex McInnes
Celebrated earlier than usual this year, both students and teachers wore traditional Thai dress, floated krathongs in the school
swimming pool and performed the Loy Krathong song in both Thai and English at the school’s Globe Theater. Head of Primary Nonie Adams said, “This year we again enjoyed celebrating the colorful and elegant Thai festival of Loy Krathong in our Primary school. All our staff and children looked wonderful in their Thai costumes as we appreciated some very skilful Thai dancing by our young students and enjoyed a moment of reflection when floating our krathongs.” The krathongs were some

Your good intentions are probably severely damaging your child by Sunel Visser
In recent years there was a disturbing increase in the percentage of young people diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in the US. It increased from 7.8 percent in 2003 to 9.5 percent in 2007 and to 11 percent in 2011. This can be attributed to changes in diagnostic criteria, medication treatment and more awareness of the condition. Angela Hanscom, a pediatric occupational therapist, suggests that
another reason for this tendency is the amount of time children are forced to sit while they are in school. Some children are actually diagnosed with ADHD while they do not really have it. It now happens that normal active children are getting tested for ADHD, just because they are healthy and energetic. These children sometimes get the message that their behavior is unacceptable simply because they can’t sit still for long periods of time. They often get punished and this affects their self-esteem. Children are constantly in an upright position these days. They also need to roll down hills, climb trees, and spin in circles just for fun. Recess times have shortened due to increasing educational demands, and children rarely play outdoors due to parental fears, liability issues, and the hectic schedules of modern-day society. Hanscom also indicates that many children have poor core strength and balance. Her research shows that, when compared to children from the early 1980s, only one out of 12 children had normal strength and balance.
She says the following: “Many children are walking around with an underdeveloped vestibular (balance) system today–due to restricted movement. In order to develop a strong balance system, children need to move their body in all directions, for hours at a time. Just like with exercising, they need to do this more than just once-a-week in order to reap the benefits.” Children need exercise to “turn their brain on”. They are, however, asked to sit and pay attention, while their bodies desperately need movement. Fidgeting is a strong indicator that children are not getting enough movement throughout the day. Hanscom’s remedy for this problem is “…authentic play experiences that get them moving in all different directions in order to stimulate the little hair cells found in the vestibular complex (located in the inner ear). If children do this on a regular basis and for a significant amount of time, then (and only then) will they experience the necessary changes needed to effectively develop the balance system–leading to better attention and learning in the classroom”. She recommends an hour-long recess session every day. Scandinavian
Loy Krathong at Garden International School by Mark Beales
Students celebrated Loy Krathong at Garden International School (GIS) with an array of cultural activities. The school’s Thai department organized an afternoon show on November 6 to mark one of Thailand’s most popular festivals. Students from Primary and Secondary performed traditional Thai dances, gave a display of Muay Thai boxing and made their own krathong using biodegradable materials. Parents were invited to come along and watch the show. Mark Beales is IB coordinator and English teacher at Garden International School.
countries are well-known for their excellent education systems. It was found in Finland that children have a “bounce in their steps” if they take a 15-minute break after every 45 minutes of instruction. And they were more focused during lessons. They have been doing this (providing breaks) since the 1960s. There are other benefits associated with free play. It helps children to develop social skills. They learn to cooperate, communicate, and compromise, all skills they need to succeed academically as well as in life. Many studies have shown that free play and physical activity is extremely important for preschoolers. It enables them to learn more complex concepts as they grow older. One study even found that most convicted killers had a lack of playtime when they were young children. We must learn to accommodate the needs of the whole child. Reading, writing and arithmetic are important, but it means nothing if our children don’t have social skills, physical skills and the ability to think for themselves. Sunel Visser is a kindergarten teacher at Mooltripakdee International School.

Kae and Sal get line honors by The Drut
2014 Indy Car News: 2014 Season completed. Australian Driver Will Power is champion. Schedule for 2015 forthcoming.
A record field of 35 faced the starter on a day that was hotter than Sharon Stone’s interrogation scene in Basic Instinct. In view of recent rains the course was in good condition and the greens despite being slow, putted truly. Action man Sandy Leiper commented that despite the course appearing to be tougher than picking fly dung out of black pepper he was going to hand in a great score. He finished further back than a python’s nether regions. Welcomes were handed out to a truckload of gents from Geraldton in Western Australia and Bunter Maloney from the settlement on the Yarra, Melbourne. We played from the white markers and Sal Brizzi off his seven handicap handed in 40 points to win A grade. Bill Steinmann and Bill McGarvie scored 39, while Eric (The Judge) Black and Mike Quills had 35 apiece. John Coetzee rounded out the grade with 33 points. In the B grade, lady golfer Kae played much like a politician fielding voter’s questions, i.e. with skill and dexterity to post a great 43 points and win easily. Second was Roy Dayton on 35 while Scott Baumgarten 33, Peter Coetzee 30, Geri Crilly 29 and J.C. Lhoste with 25 points gained podium finishes.

Thai racer Stuvik continues European Formula 3 domination in Spain The Thai racer became the 2014 EuroFormula Open Formula 3 Champion one round ago at Italy’s Monza Circuit, but the integrated Spanish Formula 3 Championship was still undecided, so when Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik flew to pole position for Saturday’s first race, he was one point closer to also taking the Spanish title. In the race however the Thai driver shot off in the lead and immediately started pulling away from the pursuing Formula 3 cars, as he has done so many times this season. He would remain unchallenged for the entire race and took the checkered flag 6 seconds ahead of second placed Alex Palou and third placed Yarin Stern. With 1 point for pole position, another 1 point for fastest lap of the race and 25 points for the race victory Stuvik had a combined 106 points lead over Palou’s 78 points, which saw the Thai racer also taking the Spanish Formula 3 Championship. The qualifying session for Sunday’s second race became tougher for Stuvik, as he struggled with his tires and
could only qualify for 4th starting position. This broke the Thai driver’s impressive record run of six consecutive pole positions in the Formula 3 series. The final race of the season became all about strategy, as the focus shifted towards who would take the second place in the championship. The battle stood between Poland’s Janosz and Spain’s Palou, and in the end, as Janosz overtook Stuvik for 4th place, he secured the runner-up place in the championship by only 1 point. Thus the Italian RP MotorSport took both first and second place in the championship. Concluding the EuroFormula Open season, Thai driver Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik with 332 points overall, took a record 10 pole positions and won 11 of the 16 races, to be crowned both EuroFormula Open and Spanish Formula 3 champion for 2014. As part of the prize for winning the Formula 3 championship, Stuvik has been invited to conduct a test at Motorland Aragon Circuit, Spain in the World Series
by Renault 3.5 Series car on November 3-4. Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik races for the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand and
is sponsored by The Pizza Company, Singha Corporation, Dacon Inspection Services and the Sports Authority of Thailand.

Our Community A long way from home Earlier this year Reuters, the international news agency, reported that in the past decade almost 6,000 people have been killed in the insurgency taking place in the southern provinces of Thailand. Many more, Buddhists and Muslims, have been wounded, or left with a disability, and while there are rehabilitation
and educational facilities for people with a disability living in the south, they are not of a similar standard as throughout the rest of the Kingdom. To offer support to those living in the south, several teachers from the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities in Pattaya traveled to the provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat. There they met several young men and women who were interested in enrolling at the school. Fifteen were accepted, and they made the long journey, over a thousand kilometers, to Pattaya, most accompanied by their parents. Having a child so far away from home is a worrying time for any parent, but Sister Pavinee, manager of the school, was on hand to meet with several mothers and put their mind at ease.
These are not the first students at the school who came from the south of the country. But as life for people with disabilities becomes more hazardous, and the likelihood of finding a vocational education and employment is low, there is a need for young people, with or without a disability, to gain knowledge, learn new skills, build their confidence and

become more independent. After two years at the school they will once again make the long journey home. But in two years’ time they will have the ability to live independently, join the workforce as equals and, in the words of Father Ray Brennan, ‘earn their own rice’. More information can be found at www.fr-ray.org or email info@fr-ray.org.
Hilton Pattaya celebrates Global Week of Service In celebration of Hilton Worldwide’s third annual Global Week of Service, October 1925, more than 50 volunteers from Hilton Pattaya have supported the local community by donating food and culinary equipments for underprivileged children at Banglamung Home for Boys. The team also did a community project ‘Dive for Life’ to collect, remove marine debris underwater around the island and beach cleanup for environmental sustainability at Koh Sak in Pattaya. Community service is an integral part of Hilton
Worldwide’s culture, and acts of volunteerism occur yearround across the portfolio of 11 distinct brands and more than 4,200 properties. Hilton Pattaya’s efforts are a part of Hilton Worldwide’s week-long annual celebration of the company’s commitment to serving and enriching the communities where team members live, work and travel. This year, Hilton Worldwide participated in more than 3,000 hands-on service projects globally. “We are delighted to take the lead on this community
A Speedy Afternoon by Derek Franklin With the aid of Pattaya Today, teenagers from Father Ray Children’s Home spent a speedy afternoon at EasyKart Pattaya Bali Hai Pier. It was great fun for the teenagers who we have never

project and support Hilton Worldwide’s Global Week of Service. Every day, our team members come up with great ideas to make this a special and memorable week with the kids and as Hilton ambassadors, we’ll try our best to be their ‘light’ at the Banglamung Home for Boys,” said Montree Sattham, director of human resources at Hilton Pattaya. “We would like to thank Hilton, for seeing it as a crucial factor to extend a helping
hand to the community. It’ll be another great milestone in Pattaya, “said Pakkamon Sirithanakarn, head of Cookery, Banglamung Home for Boys. “We are pleased to collaborate with Hilton to help rehabilitate the marine ecosystem in Pattaya; we believed that cleaning at the bottom of the ocean can support live coral, as well as beach cleanup at Koh Sak,” said Sheena Walls, general manager of Mermaids Dive Center, located in Jomtien.

You & Your Pets You’re probably prepared in case a member of your family gets injured or has a medical problem. But do you know what to do if your pet chokes on a bone or is involved in an accident? This new Pattaya Today feature will help answer some common first aid questions related to your pets. Such information could mean the difference between life and death.
Obstruction Household pets often ingest things they shouldn’t eat or swallow chunks of food without fully chewing. When such objects get stuck in their throats,
they can choke the animal and render it unconscious. Act immediately, especially if your pet is unconscious. In that case, open its mouth and try to clear the object out with your fingers. If that doesn’t work, hold the animal by its back legs, allowing its body to hang loose, and try to shake the object out. If the animal is conscious, do a modified Heimlich maneuver. Place the pet on its side and apply pressure right behind the ribs, pressing your hands forward. This may help push the item out. If neither method works, have someone drive you and your pet to a vet while you continue to do the Heimlich maneuver.
Cats for You in Pattaya
Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Contact Paul and Sandra on 0852875004 or look at their useful website http://cats4youinpattaya.webs.com/
Angel
This lovely kitten has been with us since she was just 1 week old and has been hand-reared, being fed every 3 hours day and night for over a month. By the time you read this she will be ready to go to her new home so be quick to come and see her before she is snapped up.
Precious
This lovely kitten had a bad start to her young life when she was hit by a car. She has spinal damage and cannot walk. She can however scoot around quite easily but only on a nice tiled floor so that her legs are safe from damage. Her new owner will have to change her nappy at regular intervals but has no other special needs.
Oscar
This sorry-looking creature was rescued from Central Pattaya. He has pneumonia and cat flu but is making a slow and steady recovery. Sadly he has also tested positive for both FIV and FeLV so will have to be an indoor boy and cannot mix with other cats. When he is over his present illness he is expected to live a normal life with regular checkups.
Interesting Facts about Cats Cats make about 100 different sounds; dogs make only about 10. There are more than 500 million domestic cats in the world, with approximately 40 recognized breeds.
Ginger Nutz
The first cat in space was a French cat named Felicette (a.k.a. “Astrocat”). In 1963, France blasted the cat into outer space. Electrodes implanted in her brains sent neurological signals back to Earth. She survived the trip.
This happy, healthy-looking big ginger boy has been with us for what seems to be ages. Sadly he is such a big boy now he is not always on the normal “shopping list” of the average adopter who invariably chooses his younger friends before him. When first meeting people, he quickly makes friends with anyone willing to spend a few minutes with him.
The group of words associated with cat (catt, cath, chat, katze) stem from the Latin catus, meaning domestic cat, as opposed to feles, or wild cat.
Cat Corner Tip by Dr. RJ Peters to Pattaya’s cat lovers
A cat’s hearing is better than a dog’s. And a cat can hear highfrequency sounds up to two octaves higher than a human. A cat can travel at a top speed of approximately 31 mph (49 km) over a short distance.
Going to the Dogs... Man is a dog’s idea of what God should be.
~Holbrook Jackson
Most biting and scratching problems are due to a simple misunderstanding of the cat’s basic needs. Cats do not intentionally try to ruin the furniture or the carpeting. They merely see those items as convenient and desirable things on which to groom their claws and stretch their toes. It just feels good. Even a declawed cat will “scratch” on things. Avoid destructive scratching by providing alternative surfaces such as scratching posts or pads. Dr. Peters is the author of three informative and entertaining books about household pets. They include Our Amazing Cats, and Our Amazing Cats Vol. 2, now available from Amazon Books and at www.ouramazingcats.com. Her newest book is Our Amazing Dogs. To download eBook versions of any or all three books (about 200 baht each), go to http://youniquesolutions.com/3Books.html. Dr. Peters also publishes a free newsletter, The Kitty Times.
