renewed facelift attempt is being made to convert greater Pattaya into a more environmentallyfriendly area with much less emphasis on nightlife. The Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA) is currently holding discussions with the city administration on new approaches to tourism which will increase visitor numbers by marketing the resort as attractive to nature lovers rather than to the late night revelers. Among new projects at the planning stage are mangrove forests in Banglamung, the development of Huay Yai for its traditional culture and Chinese influence, specially constructed bicycle routes around Mabprachan reservoir and other locations, as well as upgrades to popular holiday attractions in the Pattaya area. DASTA is a semiindependent organization devoted to a greener Thailand, first established by former Premier Thaksin Shinawatra. The government of Yingluck Shinawatra, unseated by the military coup of May 22, 2014, had allocated 9.22 billion baht over an eight-year period. The figure to be agreed by the coup-installed administration has yet to be publicly announced.
DASTA believes that greater Pattaya should be divided into three distinct areas: the beach resorts (including Jomtien and Koh Larn), the residential and investment areas (Pattaya and Nongprue) and the green tourist destinations in the outer reaches. At the moment Pattaya attracts about nine million visitors a year, but this number is expected to double within 10 years. DASTA points out that the city has already made great
strides forward in diversifying away from nightclubs and bars to a much more family-orientated resort. The fact that the area has good hospitals and schools has made it attractive to a growing number of working expats and retirees. Many Pattaya facilities such as five-star hotels, upmarket malls and top restaurants equal any to be found in Bangkok, or indeed other cities in Asia. Continued on page 6

News More Nigerians arrested for scam The Chonburi Transnational Crime Coordination Center has arrested four Nigerian nationals for deceiving a Thai woman to transfer cash via the internet into the criminals’ bank accounts. The fraudsters told the woman they wanted to free up several million baht in an African bank account and needed only 100,000 baht to activate the account in which she would share generously. The Nigerians were arrested in a Nongprue apartment after a tip-off and were found to be in possession of several laptops and many allegedly incriminating documents. They apparently entered Thailand without valid visas and have been arrested for that dire offense.
Pakistani drugged Russian tourist stabbed by ne’er-do-well and robbed
Police rushed to Soi 15, Threppasit Road, after a Pakistani tourist was found by condo staff in his room very much the worse for wear. Muhammad Amir Waheed, 39, later said he met two women in South Pattaya who offered female companionship and a horizontal leisure pursuit for a very reasonable fee. On the way home, the trio stopped at a supermarket and a can of beer was purchased. The victim then felt queasy in his room after imbibing the drink and fell asleep, only to discover later that the equivalent of 1,000 US dollars were missing. Police said they were checking the in-house CCTV for clues but had not yet noticed anything of relevance in apprehending the criminal females.
A young Russian tourist was cut badly on both hands when a wannabe thief tried to steal her handbag. Venera Khasianova, 22, said she noticed a man on a motorbike pulling up alongside her on Pratumnak hill and then felt pain as he lunged at her with a knife. Luckily the alleged culprit was caught by worthy citizens and was unable to profit from his crime. He later told investigators he did have a job working in a shop but the wages were too low and he desperately needed cash to enjoy the better lifestyle he felt entitled to. He added that he was surprised that the woman clung on to her bag so fervently and maintained that he had no intention of hurting anyone.
Passenger punished Noisy racers shut up by angry driver
A tourist who boarded a baht bus at Walking Street to return to his hotel became angry when the driver stopped on Second Road in an attempt to fill his vehicle with more cash-paying customers. Andrew Boyle, 54, said he tried to remonstrate with driver about the untimely delay and was rewarded with a body punch. But the Thai driver said he had been very patient with the customer and matters only got out of hand when the tourist began shouting abuse. Police said that an amicable solution would be the best way forward.
Police have cracked down on a gang of youths racing their motorbikes on Highway 36, near Rayong, who were disturbing local residents with their high-decibel activity. Following the establishment of road blocks, more than 50 teenagers, many under 18, were apprehended and given a stern warning which involved telling their parents the frank truth. Gang members said they made arrangements to race through Facebook, but thoughtfully took to the streets only on Saturday nights to avoid disturbances on a regular basis.

News Tulip Group to open a unique boutique hotel in Pattaya Luxury Pattaya property developer Tulip Group announced that they will open their fourth property this December with Centara Hotels and Resorts under the boutique brand Centra. Centra Avenue Hotel Pattaya is centrally located behind Pattaya Second Road, behind The Avenue shopping complex, and sits directly behind Tulip’s luxury condo and hotel project Centara Avenue Residence and Suites. The boutique property will offer some “firsts” not only for Pattaya but for Thailand in general. The property will be Thailand’s first-ever kosher hotel, with kosher food being served as well as having an onsite synagogue, which will cater for the ever growing tourist market from the Jewish community holidaying in Pattaya. The hotel offers a full restaurant, coffee shop, luxury appointed rooms, marble walled lobby, rooftop swimming pool and gymnasium, and its central location will surely be the main draw for all holiday makers of any nationality looking for a hotel that offers affordable luxury in the center of Pattaya. Last year Tulip Group opened the five-star Centara Grand Phratamnak Hotel and will open Centara Avenue Hotel Pattaya in 2015 which is part of the Centara Avenue Residence and Suites condominium project. The five-star resort property Centara Grand Jomtien Beach is also under construction. “This property is our fourth property with Centara Hotels and Resorts and continues our ongoing excellent business relationship together. We feel that this hotel, which is suited to the more budget-conscious traveler, offers something completely different, with the onsite kosher restaurant and synagogue, which fills a gap for the ever growing Jewish community both locally as well as those travelling to Pattaya for either business or pleasure.
It is a small property but with a big attitude and we have added a lot of smart luxury features to the property in order to give our guests the best guest experience,” said Tulip Group vice president Jason Payne. The Centra brand, as the contraction of the Centara name indicates, offers affordable hotels and resorts that provide a quality experience designed to exceed expectations. Centra properties therefore offer spacious accommodation with quality furnishing and fittings, at least one restaurant, a swimming pool, and a fitness center. All are located in a convenient setting, with restaurants and shops nearby, and those in a seaside location are within an easy walk of the beach. Tulip Group is rapidly growing into the preferred choice for discerning clients who are looking for the very best in design, location, facilities and a truly exquisite five-star lifestyle. Tulip Group works with the leading professionals in the industry, from cutting edge interior designers and architects. Working with industry leaders and backed by a secure financial position allows Tulip Group to deliver secure investments and innovative luxurious products to its customers. News Jomtien one- Merit-making at way postponed Hard Rock Hotel
Hard Rock Hotel Pattaya executives and staff led by John Manley, executive assistant manager, joined the merit-making ceremony performed by nine monks on the occasion of the hotel’s 13th anniversary.
Certificates for graduates of Chonburi Health Care School There is little chance of the abortive scheme to make Jomtien Beach Road one-way for a trial period being brought back before the end of the high season. A meeting of bureaucrats, attended by a military representative of the National Council for Peace and Order, finally scotched the idea of making Jomtien beachfront road only for southbound traffic. There was forceful objection to the idea saying that the result would be traffic chaos as the sois connecting beach road and Jomtien Second Road were often too narrow and already choked with traffic to allow drivers to turn off. The original idea was to duplicate the system where Pattaya Beach Road and Pattaya Second Road are one-way, but critics say those roads have much better traffic signs and are generally wider.

Beggar assisted by welfare department Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh took prompt action after reports that a Thai man, 68, was alone and without food on Pattaya beach near Soi 7. Boonlert Kruehong said he was from Nakhon Sawan but had no friends or relatives and had made his way to Pattaya because of good reports he had heard. Locals and vendors on Pattaya waterfront saw him several times on the beach as he tried to survive by occasional handouts from passersby. A social development worker Angkana Tungsap said she had spoken to Boonlert who was explicit that he did not wish to return to his native province. Therefore, he was sent to a local nursing home to recover pending a more thorough review of his unhappy case.
Foreigner struck by lover The body of a Russian tourist has been sent for autopsy after he collapsed and died in a convenience store on Pratumnak Road. Igor Fetisov, 54, was shopping when he fainted. A store employee phoned Pattaya Memorial Hospital for assistance. The man was found dead by the time help arrived.
Police were summoned to a Family Mart where a drunken foreigner lay wounded. Rune Myhre, 40, declined an offer to be taken to hospital. A 30-year-old ladyboy, Amnat Suwanlert, admitted striking Myhre, pointing out that the two shared a flat together and were used to ups and downs in their relationship. Both men were taken to the police station for further questioning. At one point Myhre received a phone call from his wife asking him not to cause trouble. Both men were eventually released.

The Pattaya Business and Tourism Association hosted a conference at the Grand Sole Hotel to examine the latest tourist trends. Suladda Sarutilavan, director of the Pattaya office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said that figures overall for the Eastern Seaboard suggested a 10 percent decline compared with 2013. She suggested that the decline in Russian tourist numbers might have been because of the increasing popularity of Phuket or maybe because
of economic difficulties in Russia. However, the meeting noted that there were more Thai tourists visiting Pattaya and that the policy of awarding visa-free entry to Chinese citizens for a threemonth period had been an unqualified success. Other countries showing an increase in tourist numbers this year included Malaysia, Singapore, Israel, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. This growth partly compensated for the decline in European and American arrivals.
New We Care Clinic opens in Central Pattaya Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome was on hand for the opening of the fourth branch of We Care Clinic on Central Pattaya Road. The beauty clinic has been providing skin care and aesthetic services in Pattaya since 2007. Managing director Methasit Rojrungvarid and owner Waraporn Walaisri said that about 20 million baht was spent at the new branch aiming to attract and serve a wider clientele with the approaching ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015.

SOS Rice Campaign 2014 Each year the Father Ray Foundation launches the SOS Rice Campaign to collect food donations to feed the 850 children and students under its care. This year the campaign will take place from the 4th to the 7th of December. Your donation will ensure the blind students, the children with special needs, and the vocational students with disabilities will have enough food so they can concentrate on their studies. It will also help feed the toddlers who attend the Father Ray Day Care Center and who receive a nutritious breakfast on arrival each morning. Your donation will also mean the residents of the Father Ray Children’s Home, Children’s Village and the Drop-In Center never go to bed feeling hungry. Each year the Father Ray Foundation uses 75,000 kilograms of rice, but this year they also need cooking oil, salt, sugar, fish sauce, canned fish, dried noodles and powdered milk for the toddlers at the Father Ray Day Care Center. You can make a donation at all major supermarkets in the Pattaya area: Foodland, Makro, Tesco Lotus, Big C, Best, Tops, Villa Market and Central Festival Pattaya Beach. You can also make a cash donation at 7-Eleven branches throughout Pattaya.

News The Greening Illegal boozing at amusement park of Pattaya! Continued from page 1
However, many commentators say a number of problems must be seriously addressed before a green Pattaya can come into being. DASTA sees adult entertainment in future restricted to the Walking Street area, but critics say this is most unlikely to happen any time soon. It would take a tremendous effort to close down other popular club areas such as Sexy Soi 6 or Boyztown. In any case, the legal status of the 100 buildings in Walking Street which extend into the bay itself has sometimes been questioned in the past. “It’s just pie in the sky to believe you can shovel all afterdark entertainment into one confined area like a protected bubble,” said one nightclub owner who has been based in South Pattaya for 20 years. Another problem is that Pattaya has yet to tackle many of its pollution problems which are inconsistent with a green paradise. In spite of improvements such as the new highway to Suvarnabhumi airport and Bangkok and the widening of Beach Road, local traffic conditions are often chaotic with tour buses clogging arterial roads and long queues at many city intersections. The collection of garbage in Pattaya remains an unsolved and smelly problem in parts of the city, while sewage is only partly being treated by advanced technological means. Strict law enforcement of environmental issues is spasmodic. Another difficulty is that the greater Pattaya area covers several local authorities – outside the direct control of Pattaya city fathers. Immigration police in the past have stated that Pattaya is home to too many criminal elements which need to be flushed out before a green and clean Pattaya can come into effect. As is well known, this is easier said than done. Recently, however, there have been some attempts to crackdown on long-term visa abuse such as foreigners claiming a one-year visa on the basis of a fake marriage or those trying to live permanently in Thailand on education visas even though they have no intention of learning the language. Pattaya city authorities have predicted that Pattaya may become the Thai Riviera (equivalent to the Cote d’Azur in France) by the end of this decade or soon thereafter. For that to happen, a lot of effort will have to go into the solving of infrastructure problems. The authorities can’t just rely on sensational improvements several miles from the city center to achieve the desired result.
Long boats sighted at Mabprachan The traditional long boat races were held this year on November 22-23 at Mabprachan reservoir, Banglamung, with sailors participating from several Asian countries. Competitors competed for the HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and Princess Soamsawali trophies. Twenty-eight boats of various sizes rowed for victory. No alcohol was served at the lake during the festivity but there was additional fun activities including jokes, riddles and even a chess club.
Banglamung district chief Sakchai Taenghor is considering closing a recreational park area on the Naklua Road after three girls and two boys under 18 were found drinking beer contrary to law. The seller was arrested for serving alcohol to persons under 18 and also because he did not have a
proper permit to sell to anybody. The owner of the park was summoned to Banglamung district hall and told there was a serious problem. There have been previous complaints that illegal gambling has also been taking place at the same location.
Nigerians arrested for cash scam
Officers of the Chonburi Transnational Crime Coordination Center arrested two African men who persuaded a Thai woman to transfer 100,000 baht to accounts controlled by them. One of the two Nigerians claimed that he had recently divorced his Thai wife and had 15 million baht saved in a deposit account in Thailand. However, he needed the 100,000 baht to pay the service fee in order to withdraw the mega-cash. Police discovered that the men were living at a house in North Pattaya and arrested them as they were enjoying a hearty breakfast. They are being investigated for various offenses including entering the Kingdom illegally.
Naked tourists are excused
Argumentative man stabbed
Two Russian female tourists were reported to be sunbathing without any attire and also to be smoking an illegal substance on Pattaya beach. Police did find a small pack of marijuana and also a tool used as drug paraphernalia. However, police took no action because the tool was partly hidden in the sand. The women said the tool belonged to a man who had left the beach just before police arrived on the scene. The two Russian women were warned about nakedness in public areas but were not prosecuted as this would have meant missing their imminent flight home.
Police and rescuers rushed to the side of a man calling out for help at a security guard’s box on Central Pattaya Road. Jarae Inpuang, 35, was in an intoxicated state and also had four knife wounds on his back. He was taken to Banglamung Hospital for emergency treatment and a blood transfusion. A friend told investigators that he and Jarae were drinking with a group of strangers when an argument broke out. Jarae is known to have enemies but a full police investigation will have to wait until he recovers sufficiently to explain what actually happened.

No more plastic bags please Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome joined executives of 7-Eleven and CP All to campaign for an end to the use of profligate plastic bag use at convenience stores in the area. Around 800 branches of 7-Eleven throughout the Eastern Seaboard joined in the campaign which has been going on for three years. The main thrust of the campaign is to persuade staff to use fewer plastic bags or to encourage customers to bring their own. One of the problems is that plastic bags are used by convenience store staff as evidence that a purchase has been properly made and paid for.
Visitor arrivals up in October, first monthly upturn this year
Foreign tourist police assistants needed The Tourist Police are a special division of the Royal Thai Police. The FTPA assist with carrying out the functions of the Tourist Police including assistance to tourists and local community members, helping to resolve misunderstandings and disputes, offering general advice to tourists and providing services for international events from time to time. We operate primarily in the Walking Street/Beach Road entertainment area, nightly from 9.00 pm to 2.30 am. We are currently inviting qualified male and female foreigners living in Pattaya to join the group. It’s important for members to have a friendly and relaxed attitude, to enjoy helping others and to be able to spare one or more evenings a week. A probationary period, including initial training, is part of the program.
A 67 percent surge in arrivals from China helped Thailand record an overall growth of 6.14 percent in visitors in October, the first month of positive growth this year. The total of 2,180,601 arrivals in October included 501,043 visitors from China, a market share of 23 percent. The upturn raised the total number of arrivals in January-October to 19,736,600. An analysis by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports said that the main reason for the growth in Chinese arrivals was the
exemption of visa fees approved by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) specifically for the AugustNovember period. The visa-fee waiver was designed as a short-term tactical measure to take advantage of a Chinese long-holiday period in October. It also applied to visitors from Taiwan. To expedite facilitation of the visa-on-arrival for Chinese tourists at Suvarnabhumi Airport during the three-month period, there were three specially assigned “Chinese Lanes” and
five “Premium Lanes”. Chinese-speaking translators were stationed at several areas throughout the airport. Tourism Authority of Thailand Governor Thawatchai Arunyik said, “We are pleased that the tactical visa-fee waiver strategy produced results. It is the first positive upturn in arrivals this year, and we are optimistic that the growth will continue in both November and December.” For 2014, TAT has set a target of 25.5 million visitors and foreign exchange earnings of 1.20 trillion baht.
Taller than ever at Christmas

News Spanish football in Pattaya ANIMAL LAWS With a new act in place to try and reduce cruelty to animals, let’s remember that in Pattaya some people harm them unknowingly. For example, they make merit by freeing trapped birds, without realizing the torture inflicted on the small creatures while left in cages under the hot sun. Another nasty is leaving unwanted pets at temples in the belief that they will be properly cared for or even dumping them far away from home. This Christmas will see a lot of cute puppies and kittens adopted by families, only to be abandoned when they start to grow. ROAD WIDENING The Pattaya Beach Road project has been a success in creating more lanes for traffic at busy times. But there has been very little attempt to clear the parked vehicles and for-rent motorbikes which clog the left-hand lane, particularly in South Pattaya. Also the contribution to road safety of the panda crossings, which abound on Beach Road, is absolutely zero. Not only are they usually switched off or winking orange in every direction, but neither pedestrians nor drivers appear to understand what to do even if they are working. Case of TIP (This is Pattaya). FORGOTTEN COPY What is the most common document which people forget to copy when renewing their driving license at the Banglamung transport office? It’s not their passport (ID page, non-immigrant visa and white card TM6) and not their medical letter or confirmation of address from immigration (which need not be copied anyway). That’s right, they forget to copy their expiring license, front and back, thinking that handing in the license is good enough. No – copy it and sign it! Otherwise you might have to retreat from the queue to go to one of the units on site, tragically losing your place. CHRISTMAS CHEER People say that there is less Christmas advertizing around town than is normal for the beginning of December. There is one bar on Second Road which wishes you a Happy New Year, but it has been there since last March. Another near Beach Road has a large canvas saying Welcome American Navy, though whether this describes an imminent event or is a fond remembrance from months ago is unclear. Let’s hope that the shop on Third Road which last year displayed tiny figures to represent the crib at Bethlehem doesn’t repeat its mistake. The figures representing the three wise men and the nativity group were actually Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.
Central Marketing Group (CMG), the sole owner of FC Barcelona in Thailand, has officially opened the world’s first branch outside of Spain. Souvenirs of many kinds as well as framed photographs are now on sale at CentralFestival Pattaya Beach on the second floor.
Cycling project pedals up An attempt to encourage healthy cycling is being made to coincide with HM The King’s 87th birthday celebrations. City Hall has announced that an 800-km cycling route will start in Pattaya and go as far as Chiang Khan. The idea is to encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle, to reduce the consumption of fossil-fuel energy and to celebrate ecotourism.

JOMTIEN TRAFFIC It’s a nice idea to think that making Jomtien Beach Road one way, north to south, will help traffic flow. But the authorities were wise to cancel the trial period. There are not nearly enough wide sois between Beach Road and Jomtien Second Road to cater for drivers trying to turn round or access premises in the already narrow alleys. It will be a relief to all in Jomtien Soi 5, for instance, to know that they won’t be faced with traffic chaos all day for the moment – unless the scheme is revived in the new year. CLEANING UP PATTAYA Troops from the 14th Military Circle have put in a lot of time in our fair city thwarting unregistered taxis and motorcycle taxi operators who have occasionally been known to extort money behind the scenes. They have also been influential in breaking up the umbrella and beach chair mafias if that is what they are. The military’s next target will apparently be undesirable types from Russia and Europe who have been mixed up in illegal businesses of one sort and another. It’s WST (Wait and See Time). PATTAYA PROPERTY Some people are saying that the bottom has dropped out of the local property market. But they are wrong. One of the best indicators is the parking available in the streets surrounding the Land Office (Gom Tee Din) in South Pattaya where buyers and sellers must make their registration. At the moment, it is impossible for householders in Suksabai Villa to park outside their own front doors during the daytime because of the vehicles visiting the Land Office. In particular, there’s lots of buyer interest in the new generation of condos newly built or under construction. GOOD OLD GREG’S It’s the last Christmas in the present location for Greg’s Kitchen, currently in the Drinking Street opposite the Tiffany Show on Second Road, as he and his family are moving to a new restaurant (similar name) on Naklua Road in late January. Watch this space or check at the restaurant for the details. In the meantime, there’s a slap-up Christmas dinner over three days at the current Greg’s for a very reasonable price. Book now for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or Boxing Day.

Members of the Elderly Club of Pattaya were encouraged to meditate at their monthly meeting which also included a lecture about exercising, eating healthy food and being active in the interests of mental health. Mick & Di Mantra celebrates “The Endless Summer” tribute The Food Lovers
thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com
For one night only Mantra Restaurant and Bar was redolent with the sounds of The Beach Boys during their tribute to “Endless Summer” night. Barry Upton and his Beachcombers performed tirelessly throughout the evening recreating the nostalgic Californian sounds that took the world by storm about 50 years ago. Mantra is known for not only pushing the epicurean envelope it also pushes the musical envelope staging eclectic dinner concerts which have presented the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, jazz quartets, violin maestros and most recently The Beatles Tribute night. For these evenings, executive chef Leonard Faust, prepared a gourmet feast for our gustatory senses to enjoy. The evening commenced with a rousing version of “Surfin’ USA” as our appetizer was served featuring an elegant surf combination. The finest sashimi grade tuna was presented carpaccio style accompanied by shelled king crab, avocado, Parmigiano and black caviar. A perfect opener – we could almost feel the spray of the ocean while we tucked into our fruits of the sea. We paired this starter with glasses of Monkey Bay NW Sauvignon Blanc, which with its vibrant bouquet and slight grassy overtones coupled very well indeed.
The evening continued with “California Girls”, “Barbara Ann” and all those golden oldies of yesteryear. The soup course highlighted a potato, leek and saffron foam velouté containing a seared Alaskan scallop and shredded ham hock. A marvelous mélange of velvety richness but also capturing the sweet, salty nuances of the water’s edge. We had now moved on to a glass of Hugo Casanova Antano Cabernet Sauvignon Rose from Chile which did indeed complement the creamy soup. Options were presented for the main course, either beef tenderloin
tournedos, mashed potatoes, foie gras and truffle jus or golden wok-fried snow fish, steamed Hong Kong kale and five-flavored sauce. We chose the fish option and were very happy we did. Marrying flavors into a complex whole is a technique the Chinese do best and here the sauces of hoisin, oyster, soy, rice wine and hot chili formed the intricate emulsion. It was a wonderful, spicy, sweet, salty sensation the golden cubes of snow fish fried to perfection were complemented by the welcome bitterness of kale to perfect the umami experience.
A pre-dessert of five cheeses with dried apricots and figs propelled our palates in another direction while Barry and the Beachcombers segued into a little The Beatles on the beach with “Do You Want to Dance”. The goat’s cheese, blue cheese and pecorino provided the right amount of salty, smooth tang to close the savories and pave the way for the dessert to come. Dessert came in the form of a chocolate and red wine torte with fresh berry yogurt and pistachio brittle which was sensational. We’ve always contended that red wine and chocolate are friends made in
heaven which was borne out by this lush, indulgent confection. If you haven’t visited Mantra it really is a world-class gourmet destination and one that comes highly recommended. Cuisine without borders highlights seven regional specific kitchens offering Japanese, Chinese, Western, Mediterranean (including pizzas), Indian, the grill and lava stone area plus seafood and the huge fish tanks. The ambiance is chic trendy and dynamic. Seclusion can be obtained in one of the private rooms in the Lost Gallery or a reservation made for the long and luxurious Sultan’s Table. Mantra hits the spot in so many ways. It is a popular stylish venue offering a wealth of cuisines to suit all pockets, served in a beautifully chic architectural phenomenon. A must visit.

The Pig & Whistle The Best of British Like many old pub names, for example, “The Dog and Duck”, “The Goat and Compasses”, the derivation of “The Pig and Whistle” is uncertain. There are several suggested origins most of which propose that the ‘pig’ part of the name derives from the name of a drinking vessel and the ‘whistle’ part from “wassail”. This is an old English salutation used in toasting a person’s health – the reply being ‘drink hail!’ The famous Pig and Whistle Inn in Soi 7 Pattaya has been serving up its quintessential pub grub to its many regulars and guests for many years. Jomtien is home to its sister hostelry which also offers a spacious first floor pool lounge with a Thursday “Shoot Pool Nite”. From 8:30 a.m. to midnight this kitchen is in full flight providing the class of dishes that has made the Pig and Whistle famous. Inside the new establishment, the décor is a modern, loungy sports bar with three big screens showing the matches of the day, a big comfy bar and
banquette seating for friendly gettogethers and sociable events. The English breakfast menus are legendary and many a trencherman has been defeated by The Pig’s “full Monty” of two eggs, two English sausages, two rashers of Wiltshire bacon, baked beans, grilled mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, fried potatoes, fried bread plus toast and marmalade at only B.190. Breakfast meat heads would be well and truly satisfied with the No. 1 Special set: fillet steak (100 grams), two eggs any style, bubble and squeak and mushrooms for B.195. Even those folk who enjoy a kipper for breakfast are kept happy with the No. 2 Special set: kipper, scrambled eggs, bacon and toast for B.195. All the breakfast items, including the bubble and squeak and black pudding, can be ordered singly or with any item of your choice. Mick and I visited the other evening to sample the English victuals and were very impressed with the hearty and the homely “just
as mom used to cook” quality of all this pub fayre. Come hungry though, the portions are huge and the staff (especially chef) disappointed if your plate isn’t licked clean before its return to the kitchen. After much deliberating (it all reads so well), we chose to kick off the proceedings with a portion of their signature chicken liver pate (B.120). Deeply rich in flavor and served with dark brown bread toast and garnish, it was a tasty appetizer. Other starters include the perennially popular Norwegian prawn cocktail, spring rolls or one of their homemade soups with the pea and ham variety coming highly recommended. We should mention the sandwiches now before we move on to the main courses. These are wonderful “door stop” affairs: huge slices of thickly sliced white bread generously packed with the filling of your choice, i.e. hot chicken, roast beef, bacon and egg, sausage and egg, and even pork and apple with prices from B.70. Half time by now and Mick and I were wondering where to take our taste buds for a nostalgic trip back to the times when the term
“gastropub” had never been coined. We chose a traditional Wiltshire gammon steak served with an egg, fresh pineapple, garden peas and chips and the house chicken ham and mushroom pie accompanied by garden peas, carrots, cabbage, roast potatoes and gravy (B.245). The pie came crisp and crunchy with a softer interior playing host to chunks of chicken and flavorsome mushrooms. Accompanied by the best roast potatoes I have tasted in a long while and a gravy that shrieked “mmm Bisto” – it was delicious as was the large tranche of gammon steak with burnished pineapple. Thai food is not forgotten and there are over 30 items to choose from. Meaty diners are spoilt for choice from the signature beef stew, the
homemade steak and kidney pie, fillet or sirloin steak, braised steak in a rich red wine sauce and their celebrated liver, bacon and onions plus daily roast lunches (with all the trimmings) starting at B.270. No selfrespecting pub would be without fish and chips and here it is a house specialty featuring huge fillets of white fish deep fried in a “light as a feather” batter and served with mushy peas and chef’s individual tartar sauce. So much great pub grub on this menu and I haven’t even mentioned the famous Pig and Whistle mixed grill yet! Valiant trenchermen only required to tackle this gourmand’s platter of sirloin steak, pork chop, lamb chop, pork sausage, liver, kidney, fried eggs, grilled mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, fried onions and chips. It will set you back B.500 but then you probably won’t eat again for a week! Christmas is approaching and the P&W will be offering their seasonal plate of roast turkey with all the traditional trimmings for only B.450 with full Christmas menu at B.850. Check it out over the holidays; it’s sure to be a nostalgic reminder of your mom’s Christmas day dinners. We really enjoyed the classic homey dishes here at the Pig and Whistle Jomtien. For a true taste of the best of British it would be hard to beat this most convivial pub with its hearty, nourishing food, friendly staff and welcoming vibe. Thinning hair? Don’t despair If you look older than you feel, it may be because of thinning hair—except in some places where you do not want hair to sprout. For unwanted hair (in your nose and ears, for example, or on your back), quality trimmers and tweezers can be helpful. For your mane, however, here are some suggestions that may forestall hair loss and even promote growth. • Salmon. Omega-3-rich foods like salmon and sardines help seal in your hair’s shine. Distilled fish oils or DHA supplements will work, too. • Bran. Bran is rich in vitamin B, which may slow hair loss and promote hair growth. Other B-rich victuals include beans, peas, carrots, cauliflower, soybeans, nuts, and eggs. • Avocados. The whole fruit as well as avocado oil may prevent dihydrotestosterone (or DHT) from getting to and killing hair follicles. • Eliminate fat from four-legged animals. Such animal fat as well as palm and coconut oil promote more DHT production and hair follicle damage. • Green tea. Brew a strong pot, cool it, and then give your head a rinse to help kill off dandruff-causing
fungus. You can also drink green tea, which may help slow balding, too. • Black sesame seeds. There’s no real data on this, but the Chinese swear that a teaspoon a day keeps hair from going gray.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia--a brain disorder (damage to the brain cells) that causes loss of memory and makes it hard for people to care for themselves. Alzheimer’s may also cause changes in mood and personality.
Worried about Alzheimer’s? Seven tips that may prevent it Do moments of forgetfulness have you worried about your brain health? Don’t fret -- more than half of all Alzheimer’s cases may be preventable. And while there’s some debate over what exactly increases your risk of the disease, these seven lifestyle changes may help keep Alzheimer’s at bay. More research is needed to confirm whether there is a causal link between these seven key risk factors and Alzheimer’s. But there are plenty of other good health reasons to make the following changes: 1. Get moving. Inactivity is linked to greater Alzheimer’s risk, so take a daily walk. Walking every day can prevent your brain from shrinking, too 2. Don’t smoke. If you do, quit. Smoking may up the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease. 3. Eat more bananas. The potassium in this plentiful fruit which is cheap here can help lower your blood pressure by as much as two to three points! And low blood pressure at middle age may help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. 4. Go to bed. Getting a good night’s sleep can lower your risk of type 2 diabetes, so get your ZZZs because research suggests that developing type 2 diabetes may up your chances of getting Alzheimer’s.
5. Get Outdoors. People who spend time outside— exercising, exploring, playing with pets or children -- have less depression. That’s good news for the brain, because depression may increase the risk of Alzheimer’s. 6. Take a class. Higher education is linked to lower rates of Alzheimer’s. You need not return to college. Study a new language (Thai, perhaps?), learn to play a musical instrument, tackle mathematical or logical problems. 7. Drop a few. Becoming obese at middle age may be connected to higher Alzheimer’s risk.

Employees, business travellers and expatriates are being advised to make sure they get vaccinated during the Northern Hemisphere’s flu season. Influenza (the flu) is one of the most common vaccine-preventable diseases among travellers. It can be mild to severe in nature, and sometimes leads to serious complications. In many countries it is one of the biggest causes of short-term illness. For employers, sickness absence can have a significant business impact. Flu ‘more likely’ to impact on business than Ebola A recent survey of leading companies, conducted by International SOS in the United States, has found a large majority (83 percent) expect the flu to have more of an impact on their business than Ebola in the coming months. The survey canvassed the opinions of more than 300 companies – including many Fortune 500 businesses – that are responding to the Ebola outbreak.
The US Government advises that during each flu season 111 million workdays are lost, costing approximately $7 billion a year in sick days and lost productivity in the US. To reduce the chances of developing influenza, all travellers should be vaccinated annually. The risk of exposure to influenza depends on the time of year and destination. In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season generally ranges from November through March. In the Southern Hemisphere, most activity occurs from April through September. In the tropics, the risk of exposure exists throughout the year. Dr. Sarawut Niamloi, medical director at International SOS said, “If organizations are considering a plan to vaccinate staff – now is the time to act. The vaccine is effective in preventing influenza among healthy adults. Vaccinating a workforce can have a noticeable, positive impact on an organization’s lost hours due to sickness. There are many unknown factors that affect business continuity, but flu is predictable and preventable.” Flu spreads from one person to another through coughing, sneezing and talking. Someone who has the flu may pass the illness to others even before they show signs of being sick and may remain contagious for about a week. People with underlying health conditions, as well as older adults and young children, are at higher risk of severe complications from flu. Although there are antiviral medications, which are generally used to treat people more likely to get a severe illness, vaccination remains important to prevent flu. Vaccination needs to be repeated annually, as flu viruses change. One year’s vaccine is not necessarily effective against the viruses that will circulate widely the next year.

Some require only one visit while others need a few appointments but all are non-invasive, pain-free ways to repair and refine your face or body. Botox To help smooth these wrinkles that creep up with the years of frowning and squinting. It can also eliminate the sour look that sometimes we sport without knowing by turning the mouth corners up. Fillers To fill in furrows left behind as we lose the underlying layers of fat on our facial areas: good to smooth out the nasolabial folds, reduce the tear-through that often appears under the eyes. Also great to fill in the large wrinkles that Botox alone cannot eliminate totally. These fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, a watery gel that gets reabsorbed by the body over the course of months.

Bose SoundLink Color Bluetooth speaker Typically how a speaker sounds is more important than how it looks — but when it comes to portable speakers, both are critical. The Bose SoundLink Color Bluetooth speaker has you covered on both counts. Available in five distinct colors — black, white, blue, red, and mint — it looks good enough to take anywhere. Its built-in rechargeable battery offers up to eight hours of music, voice prompts make pairing new devices a breeze, and on-board controls let you change the song without digging for your phone. Of course, it has to sound great too, so it’s good to know that while its price is affordable, the rich, warm sound is everything you’d expect from Bose.
Logitech Keys-To-Go iPads are highly portable — the iPad Air 2 even more so than its predecessors. But they lack one key ingredient for writers: physical keys. Logitech Keys-To-Go solves this problem without sacrificing portability by packing a full, responsive QWERTY keyboard into a tiny package. In addition to a full range of standard and iOS shortcut keys, this travel-ready keyboard features Bluetooth for easy pairing and compatibility with a variety of devices, a surface covered in FabricSkin that allows for key travel while keeping out dirt, dust, and spills, and a built-in rechargeable battery that provides up to three months of use on a single charge.
Microsoft Band With Apple, Google, and pretty much everyone else getting into the wearable computing business, it was inevitable that Redmond would join the fray. The Microsoft Band is a wrist-mounted fitness tracker watch, sporting ten sensors that include an optical heart rate sensor, a UV sensor to keep track of your sunlight exposure, a galvanic skin sensor to measure stress, and built-in GPS. You keep track of everything via a 1.4-inch touchscreen that also shows the expected notifications for texts, phone calls, emails, Facebook, and Twitter. It boasts a battery life of around two days, and it’ll work with both iOS and Android, but if you want to bark commands at your wrist like some sort of secret agent, you’ll need a Windows Phone to power its voice-activated Cortana capabilities.

Chevrolet Captiva 2.4 LTZ AWD 2014 Edition Facelifted and upgraded – GM’s Chevy SUV still goin’ strong “Tempus fugit”, said the old Romans or time flies. It’s been seven years since Chevy’s SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) Captiva made its debut here in the Kingdom of by John K. Lindgren Smiles. Editor-in-chief: carsanook.com With the Japanese competition brewing up, a facelift or minor changes was needed for the Captiva. Call it minor but the impact is major inside and out. The exterior tweaks include a redesigned front bumper and triangular oversized, cool fog light covers. In the center of the grill the iconic canary yellow Chevy bow-tie emblem. The posterior view reveals a new skid plate and integrated rectangular twin chrome exhaust pipes. Plus five-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels adding SUV power to the look. Interior. Chevrolet has given its seven-seat (5+2) SUV new recessed dials, a user-friendly dual-zone climate control and the Passive Entry Passive Start (PEPS) allowing driver to unlock the doors and start the engine from outside of the vehicle. Climb onboard. The Captiva is roomy and luxurious, especially the top LTZ model which boasts new light gray leather upholstery. The cockpit is fitted with all the bells and whistles: 7-inch touch screen, MP3, Bluetooth and navigator. All form and function. There is ample space, too. On holiday trip four to five people will travel in great comfort, be the destination Phuket island, Chiang Mai or Mae Sot – the new gateway to Burma (Myanmar). Trunk space: Plenty. Fold the second and third rows down and you can carry a refrigerator or Steinway piano.

X-speed Pattaya opens Pattaya Today tests the rangetopping Captiva 2.4-liter petrol (gasoline) LTZ variant, price tag: 1,595,000 baht. Built at the high-tech General Motors, Eastern Seaboard, Rayong plant. This vehicle is propelled by a four-cylinder, 167 horsepower engine mated to a second generation GF6 six-speed automatic transmission. The Ecotec engine runs also on E20 and E85 (petrol/alcohol mixtures). Safety systems? The usual alphabet soup: Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS) and Brake Assist System (BAS) and front, side, and curtain airbags. Hill Descent Control (HDC) and Hill-Start Assist (HSA) plus All-Wheel Drive (AWD). That’s what you need for safe motoring in northern Thailand on the winding steep, mountain roads. Furthermore, the intelligent automatic rain sensor adds another safety feature. Driving impressions: Chevy Captiva
stands at a height of 1,727 mm giving the driver a commanding view from his eight-way adjustable power driver’s seat. Perfect! And of course, the multifunction steering wheel with fingertip audio and cruise controls. During our long test drive to the verdant mountains of Mae Sot in Tak province the conditions shift from near sweltering high noon heat on the plains of Ayutthaya to torrential rains somewhere in Nakhon Sawan on the AH1 (Asia One Highway) on the return leg. Suddenly it’s pitch-dark. You’re driving in the middle of a rain storm and the traffic; 10-wheel with trucks, double-decker tour buses and pickups moving, pushing from behind relentlessly. Better turn off the MP3 easy listening music. Easy listening? It’s all eyes on the road and both hands on the wheel. Focus! But the big, sturdy Captiva with its 2.4-liter engine gives you confidence to soldier on to a shelter in the storm. A big, brightly lit PTT and 7-Eleven pump, Amazon Cafe in Ang Thong province. A pit stop. E20 for Chevy Captiva and pot noodles, “Mama” for the passengers and strong coffee for driver. And hit the road again. The rain subsides later and we reach Bangkok, safe and sound. Yours truly, wife, mother-in-law and two toy poodles. Our vehicle, the facelifted Chevy Captiva 2.4-liter LTZ AWD, has passed the test with flying colors. Chevrolet Captiva AT LTZ AWD

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS by Magna Carta Law Office
Getting Arrested in Thailand How long may police hold a suspect or alleged offender before charges must be filed? According to Thai law and procedure, a suspect can be arrested and detained for a period of up to 48 hours in the police station for thorough investigation of the offense that has allegedly been committed, provided the arresting officers have explained or informed the suspect of his offense or presented a warrant of arrest. Police may conduct searches and seizures without a warrant when they have reasonable grounds to consider that the suspect is in possession of any illegal substances or articles that may be used to commit a crime or when the crime is committed in the presence of an arresting officer. In case the investigation is not finished in 48 hours, the police officer must request the court to grant the power for confinement extension the length of which is at the discretion of the court. The arrested must be given a chance to notify any of his family members, relatives or friends of the said arrest and the place of incarceration which also follows that they must also have visitation rights and an opportunity to talk to them privately. Due to language barrier, can a suspect be provided an interpreter? Warrant of arrest and other verbal warnings are expected to be in the Thai language. Therefore it is essential for the police or the court to provide a non-Thai suspect with an interpreter. Can a suspect remain silent when being questioned by the police? All suspects have the legal right not to disclose any information without the presence of a lawyer at every step of the investigation stage. The suspect must first be made aware that any statement he makes may be used as evidence against him. If the arresting officer fails to notify the suspect of his legal rights upon the arrest, it would mean that any confessions made beforehand may not be used as evidence. Can a suspect be provided a legal counsel if he cannot afford one? Any arrested suspect has the right to request a competent legal counsel, to meet him in private, and
to secure his attendance during the proceedings. If the arrested suspect cannot afford a lawyer, the court can provide one without any cost. What if the alleged offender needs medical treatment? He has the right to adequate medical treatment, if needed. If the suspect is sick before or during his confinement, the police on duty will have to escort the suspect to a hospital upon the approval of the chief of police. What is the general rule regarding the right to bail? A suspect or alleged offender is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Anybody charged with a criminal offense shall be admitted to bail for temporary release as a matter of right, with sufficient sureties as prescribed by law before judgment is passed by the court. A written request must be submitted by a bailsman to the investigating officer, who will ask for particular documents. The result of the bail review shall be announced within 24 hours. The minimum bail amounts may vary because the amount of bail for each case is set by the presiding judge of each jurisdiction. In Thailand, a request for temporary release may be submitted under one of three categories: Request for temporary release by using assets, cash and government employment status. If the bailsman manages to obtain bail, the suspect is released. If the suspect cannot meet bail demands then he will remain in custody, which might result in difficulty to defend his case. Do police officers have the right to confiscate and withhold the passport of an alleged offender? Confiscation of the passport can cause serious problems. A passport is the most important document to every foreigner, without which you may be unable to engage in any important transactions, and most crucially, you can’t leave Thailand and return to your home country. It must be kept in mind that passports should be returned immediately after the suspect has been released on bail. Police officers have the right to seize and withhold a passport only if they have suspicion that it has been used for a criminal act or it is indeed counterfeit.

Expat Money Corner by Tim Whiteley
Is ‘Boom & Bust’ Human Nature? Very few ever seem to learn from the enormous amount of historical evidence surrounding the economic cycles of both markets and the macro (national) economics of individual countries. We are now witnessing the slowing of the so-called ‘world engine’ of China with levels of growth down to their stated minimum requirement of around the 7 to 7.5 percent per annum necessary to sustain a colossal population’s demand for jobs and thus avoid potential social unrest. China’s average wage increased last year by almost 50 percent and the currency continues to strengthen; that coupled with often a 120-day lead time from order to delivery of goods in Europe, for example, is taking the icing off the cake. This same ‘pricing themselves out of the market’ has happened over centuries as the prosperity increases in particular economies, the unit labor costs increase and the once cheap haven for manufacturers becomes much less competitive. If you couple that with the current trend in the US, the UK and parts of continental Europe to bring manufacturing home, where possible, you have the beginnings of a trend. With the habitual inequalities in this world there will, seemingly, always be somewhere the economic powerhouses can have their products manufactured at rock bottom labor rates and business being what it is, multinationals will have no compunction in moving operations to the latest cheap hotspot, while also using favorable tax regimes as bases, a fact that has resulted in much publicized criticism of many global players in recent months and prompted governments to try to take action to curb what they see as evasion. This will aim to ensure large corporates pay tax in the countries they do business and receive revenue. With the somewhat patchy world economic recovery from the financial crisis and geopolitical tensions creating volatility in the markets, the lessons we can take from this ballet, which has been played out since time immemorial, is that there is always a ‘rise and fall’ in national economies, from the British Empire to the American version and now the Chinese rocket. No one is writing China off economically, however, the never-ending meteoric growth of individual countries is unsustainable. The fact is that, in China’s case, there may be a new burgeoning middleclass; nonetheless, they still have well over one billion people in poverty. As is often the case in the developing economies, there’s only a relatively small percentage of the overall population that sees significant benefit from the country’s success at a macro level, certainly in the earlier stages of development. The cyclical nature of a particular country’s economy brings knock on effects in their market which, in turn, has similar effects on other markets and so we go on. These swinging fortunes should lead us to ‘Economics 101’, ‘supply and demand’. When I first studied economics at my grammar school, they gave me a ‘Hanson’ textbook and on near enough the first page ‘demand and supply’ was covered. Why have we forgotten this basic truism? We have studied the available options for investors over many years and there are, in fact, more than a few examples of funds whose sphere of activity is based in a sector where demand far exceeds supply and -- surprise, surprise -- they have been able to maintain consistently decent results throughout the whole financial malaise of the last five to seven years and can attribute more than a little of their success to Mr. Hanson’s first lesson. Thailand set to become Asia’s real estate hub! I just returned from New Orleans where I joined 18,000 fellow members of the National Association of Realtors® (NAR) at the organization’s four-day annual Conference & Expo. What an eye opener! Many are not aware that the NAR, with more than 1.1 million members worldwide, owns the trademark for the word “Realtor” and that only members of the NAR may identify themselves as Realtors. Last year, Thailand’s Real Estate Sales and Marketing Association (RESAM) held an NAR Certified Property Specialist (CIPS) training course here, where 55 professionals were certified as Realtors and Certified International Property
Specialists, many from Pattaya. That was just the beginning of collaboration between the RESAM president, Dr. Pairote Sukjan, and NAR’s chair of the Global Business and Alliances Committee, Nancy Suvarnamani. Suvarnamani, owner and president of Century 21SGR, Inc., in Chicago, plans even larger real estate activities in her native Thailand. She recently announced that Thailand will again host another CIPS training course, and that the NAR is allowing her to organize an official International Conference of Realtors in Thailand with both events scheduled for mid-2015. The latter event will be open to any and all of the more than one million Realtors from all over the

world and will be attended by many of the organization’s top officials. Having both our second CIPS training course in two years and the International Conference of Realtors this coming year is a wonderful opportunity that will establish Thailand as the hub for real estate development in Asia. I say this because Asia--and ASEAN nations in particular --have exploding middle classes and that will drive sales of consumer products, vehicles and homes at a rate never seen before in history. To help put the phrase ‘exploding middle classes’ in perspective, remember that in 1970 there were approximately 400,000 middleclass people in India and China combined. Less than 45 years later we have about 17 million middleclass people in India and another 45 million in China. Not to mention projections that by the year 2030 China will represent two-thirds of the entire world’s middleclass. That brings us back to Nancy Suvarnamani, the 29-year real estate veteran who has been to Thailand at least four times this year and returns again this month. Preparing for Asia’s anticipated economic boom, the National Association of Realtors has stepped up its Certified International Property Specialist training courses. There now are 45 licensed NAR instructors delivering the five-day program, only six of whom operate outside the United States.Seeing this great need for real estate education in Asia, I took my second CIPS course in October of last year, following which I participated in a CIPS Instructors class with Aida Turbow, one of the top NAR instructors. I thought it was important to expand

my knowledge base because I write and speak about the industry publicly, and because I was hoping I might join the NAR CIPS instructor’s team sometime soon. Just two months ago I was pleasantly surprised (shocked, actually) when I received a letter from NAR headquarters in Chicago stating, “Congratulations, you have been officially approved as a National Association of Realtors® Certified International Property Specialist instructor, effective today. We are very excited to have you as part of the faculty and look forward to your teaching courses very soon.” “Teaching very soon” was something that made me very happy to hear, and I look forward to being part of the fantastic growth in real estate professionalism across Asia which, although in its infancy, is already moving very fast. For example, Terry Blackburn of Ensign Media, organizers of the Thailand Property Awards, after just eight years has annual awards ceremonies in Thailand, Philippines, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, South East Asia and China; seven of those events came about in just the last three years!

Real estate and the entire property industry are exploding across ASEAN and across Asia to Russia, India and the Middle East. Thailand is quickly surfacing as the hub of this great race to educate and accommodate the demand for those seeking to be real estate professionals in the expansive market. With the support and drive of NAR officials like Nancy Suvarnamani and RESAM’s Dr. Pairote, we will be seeing more and more education and support for our growing industry throughout the Asian continent. Just take a look through the many local real estate publications and note how many Realtors display their CIPS logos in their advertising. Yes, real estate proficiency in Pattaya has come a long way. There are 10 to 15 CIPS certified agents now serving the Eastern Seaboard, and within the coming year you will see the number double if not triple as a result of our next CIPS International Property Specialist certification course. Universal Group brings French Riviera to Pattaya
p
attaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome suggested a couple of years ago that his vision was to see the area develop into the Thai equivalent of the French Riviera (Cote d’Azur) by the end of this decade. Universal Group has certainly taken the mayor’s aspiration as their goal in their latest project, Seven Seas Cote d’Azur, which will total 1,308 units of varying sizes in seven buildings on 15 rai of land. The location is 300 meters from the beach at Na Jomtien. The term Cote d’Azur was coined in 1887 for the beautifully blue Mediterranean coastline of the southeast corner of France, including the sovereign state of Monaco.

In the 19th century, it quickly became the playground of European royalty and rich families and frequent visitors included Queen Victoria, the Rothschilds and Tsar Alexander the Second of Russia, followed later by the French fashion designer Coco Chanel, the painter Pablo Picasso and the writer Somerset Maugham. Universal Group, founded by Narayan Pagarani in Bombay in 1972, has always been visionary in approach. A small import-export company was quickly transformed into a truly global manufacturing, trading, hospitality and real estate construction conglomerate today catering for the diverse requirements of African, Middle East and Asia-Pacific countries. in world-class resort terms, Universal in its first three projects locally has always sought to exceed even the highest customer expectations. “We really feel we are breaking new ground with Seven Seas Cote d’Azur,” says chief executive officer Sonia Punjabi, “and the project owes its entire appearance and ethos to the actual Cote d’Azur.” To start with, the seven low-rise buildings are named after the key cities and towns of the French Riviera: Nice (the largest population center), Cannes, Monaco, Marseille, Monte Carlo, St Tropez and Montpellier. French-style architecture permeates both the public and private areas of the resort, while the alleys and promenades – and even the street lighting – have been designed from the French originals. The major attraction of the French Riviera was always direct access to the beaches and waters of the Mediterranean. This likely explains why so many 19th century visitors to the grand marina were British, for this was the era when Britain really did rule the waves. Seven Seas Cote d’Azur is itself totally surrounded by
water and has a beach clubhouse, a colorful and luxurious marina near the clubhouse, a lounge bar overlooking the pier, canal pools, a creeper tunnel, four individually themed large swimming pool areas (and a kids’ pool), as well as a super yacht and an old sail boat with sliders. Other family-orientated attractions include many facilities housed within the St Tropez club house, the biggest of its kind in Chonburi province covering four floors and 2,000 square meters, a fitness center, a festival palace featuring films, jazz and other popular entertainment, exclusive boulevard-style shopping promenades with French-style restaurants, cafes and bistros offering both regular and al fresco dining and special facilities for ladies and children. There’s even a chess board area, a golf playground facility, and party rooms to hold events for residents and their families. Currently, the pre-sales price for a unit at Seven Seas Cote d’Azur starts as low as 1.199 million baht which is remarkable for the luxury and quality on offer. There is more information at www.sevenseascotedazur.com. As regards Universal Group’s two other projects in the Pattaya area, Seven Seas Condo Resort is rapidly finishing construction with exterior landscaping being the priority early next year. Construction is now underway at Savanna Sands Condo Resort and level four will have been reached by December with a final completion date in 2017.

Tips & Advice
What Our
Readers Say
Need for referendum
(Lionel Kennedy writes) I have followed as best I can the political developments in Thailand since the May 22 coup. One of the big issues at the moment is whether the Kingdom should hold a referendum on the yet-to-be produced constitution. It seems to me that the overwhelming response should be “yes”. No matter how you view events over the past six months, it is undeniably true that the coup destroyed democracy, or what passed for democracy. The justification for the putsch is that Thailand was heading towards civil war. I recall the massive number of hidden arms caches which turned up once the soldiers started properly investigating which had not been done under the former civilian regime. Since the people currently ruling the country were not elected to their positions but selected by the National Council for Peace and Order, it is very important that the eventual constitution is submitted to a referendum.
In a coup-inspired world it is one of the few mechanisms to ensure the ordinary people are consulted. This was, of course, done in the constitution written after the 2006 coup, a sort of minimum standard you might say. Critics of the referendum idea say that it will be too expensive and cost 2 billion baht. But this is not a huge sum when set against the 500 billion baht loss attributed to the domed rice subsidy scheme associated with the last civilian administration. Another objection is that a referendum would serve only to deepen political rifts, to which the answer surely is that failure to hold such a vote might be even worse for ongoing conflicts. Of course, plebiscites are blunt instruments of gauging the will of the people, as only a yes or no vote to a broad set of proposals is possible. Nonetheless, if politicians in Britain can promise a referendum on key issues, such as Britain’s continued membership of the European Union, I don’t see why Thailand should be placed in a different position.
it will be returned on the spot to you or to your representative.
Second British Passport In response to readers asking about this topic: Who can obtain one? To obtain a second British passport without cancelling the first, you have to be working overseas in several countries. The idea is that you may have to apply for a visa (which can take days or weeks) in one country while needing to visit a different one. The most obvious categories are oil or gas technicians working in the international oil industry or security staff. Likely places of work include Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan. Applicants sometimes include visitors both to Muslim countries and Israel. What documents are needed? You have to fill in the normal passport application form but tick the box for “your first British passport” and not a renewal. Here in Thailand, you also need two color passport photos (check the size on the British embassy website), a signed color copy of every page of your current passport, your original British birth certificate or similar, proof of address in an official document (e.g. tax form) and a detailed letter from your employer. This should state clearly why you need two passports and give countries and approximate dates for a visit in coming months. This letter should not be more than four weeks old when you apply. You then have to book an appointment by email at Trendy Office Building in Bangkok, although your authorized representative can visit there on your behalf. Please note that the current passport has to be shown at the meeting, although
How long does the process take? Once the application has been lodged and accepted, the waiting period is about two months at present. You will be able to use your first passport during this time as you are specifically asking for it not to be cancelled as you believe you are eligible to carry two. All passports are issued in UK and, for Thailand, returned to Trendy Office. Staff there will phone you when it is ready for collection. Again your authorized representative can collect it on your behalf. Trendy Office will not send it on to you by post or by courier mail. Is success assured? Assuming Trendy Office accepts the application, it is then sent by them to the UK. Passport staff there make the decision to award a second passport or not. It is not worth applying unless you have a detailed letter from your employer setting out the case and your need to visit several countries as part of your contract. Can I use both passports as I wish? Once you enter Thailand with one passport, you must leave the country using the same passport. You will find that most countries in the world have the same policy. If for example you mislaid the first passport while here in Thailand, you cannot simply take the other one to leave. In these circumstances, you would report the loss to Trendy Office and apply for an emergency document quoting the lost passport number. The best advice is simply to make sure you don’t lose one. What is the cost? The cost is 106.01 pounds for a first passport – we mentioned before a second passport application is not a renewal. That includes the courier fee to send the application to UK and back. This price assumes you are doing everything yourself. Trendy Office accepts credit card payments only, not cash or cheques or banker’s order.
Snap Judgment Electrified Pattaya The military government has confirmed the construction of a 210-km electrified rail link which would connect Bangkok’s two airports (Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang) with U-Tapao, near Rayong. The project will be an extension of the current rail link between downtown Bangkok and Suvarnabhumi airport. U-Tapao is much less busy than the Bangkok airports but is widely used by charter flights bringing Russians in particular to the nearby resort of Pattaya. However, Pattaya City itself is to be one of the stopping points on the new fast-track (but not bullet) rail link to Bangkok which tourism experts say will transform the city’s prospects in the future. At the moment, a rail journey between Bangkok and Pattaya is well-nigh impossible as well as taking several journeys and requiring a change of train. However, it is not clear from the published plans where in the city passengers would board and get off. The current station on Soi Country Club Road is inconvenient and remote. An earlier suggestion was that passengers disembarking in Pattaya could then board a shorthaul overhead electric train to hotels downtown, but funding for this project is still under wraps. According to Air Chief Marshal Prachin Chantong, minister of transport and a junta member, the construction will be divided into two phases. Firstly the 20-km rail link between Phaya Thai BTS station and Don Mueang will be completed, thus meaning that transit passengers will be able to switch airports in Bangkok without using buses or taxis. After completion, the 190-km railway link will be built to U-Tapao. The first phase will cost about 30 billion baht, but there is no costing for the remainder as the exact route to Rayong from Bangkok has yet to be determined. Construction on the first part is expected to begin in early 2016 which also marks the country’s entry into the ASEAN Economic Community, a free trade zone of 10 Asian countries with Thailand at the hub. It has also been disclosed that the government still has to negotiate with the Royal Thai Navy, which co-owns U-Tapao airport with the civilian aviation authority, about the details of the rail link project. In the past, agreement with the U-Tapao authorities has proved to be complex as the airport is currently used for confidential flights and weather-casting as well being a major repair depot for the national carrier Thai. Air Chief Marshal Prachin said further study was necessary to develop U-Tapao as a fully-commercial airport. In particular, the amount of space to be used in the expansion was a sensitive subject. The extension plan has come amid reports that use of the current Suvarnabhumi-Phaya Thai rail link has declined in recent months, with nine trains withdrawn for service for year-long maintenance. However, the figures were disputed by the military government which said they had great confidence in rail links to enhance both business and tourism in Bangkok and neighboring provinces. Some passengers had complained about baggage handling and the confusion between stopping and non-stop trains on the route. Members of the Pattaya Business and Tourism Association welcomed the announcement of linking the three airports as likely to bring a lot of extra business to Pattaya in the medium term. Although the new highway between Bangkok and Pattaya has reduced traveling time substantially, there are already signs of strain because of the volume of traffic, especially on weekends. There are also delays because of resurfacing and accidents. However, the Pattaya local authority has warned that the success of the new rail project will depend a great deal on whether passengers see the service as user-friendly. One officer said, “There is no point in dumping incoming passengers at a railway station remote from the Pattaya city center and then leaving them to make their own arrangements to get to their hotels in South Pattaya or Jomtien.” A lot of research worldwide suggests that the location of the railway station is a crucial factor in whether a rail link is successful. The last thing weary travelers want is another long and uncomfortable journey by road with their luggage after a rail journey to their destination. Pattaya as a whole will be watching the new venture very closely. It could indeed transform the Eastern Seaboard’s prospects but, as usual, the devil will be in the detail.

Youth Focus Sports Day at Phoenix Wittaya School Recently, here at Phoenix Wittaya School, we hosted our annual sports day. The final two days of term 1 saw our pupils do battle in several competitive sporting events to see who emerged as “the best of the best” following exciting track and field events. Teamwork and participation were the themes of this year’s event, and every single student got to take
part in the various competitions, races, swimming events, and team games. The event began with the marvellous sports day parade, accompanied by our student cheerleaders and drum majors, who led a colorful parade of our future sporting champions. Everyone played hard and competed even harder, and our pupils won a host of gold,
by Phoenix Wittaya School
silver and bronze medals for their athletic prowess. More importantly, everyone – parents, students and teachers – had a fun, enjoyable day, which provided great entertainment and many fond memories. We look forward very much to next year’s event, where more medals will be won in a spirit of fun competition.
Competition versus Cooperation in school by Peter Hartnell The age-old question of competition – is it helpful or harmful – has long occupied commentators, especially educators. In schools, it has always been something of a false dichotomy. The characterization that competition produces rampant individualism, serious, stressed students prone to domination, intimidation and bullying on the one hand, or to determined and fearless leaders, able to survive in a hostile world on the other, have both always struck me as extreme and inaccurate positions. Schools are microcosms of society and in my view should always stress cooperation, both in the classroom and on the sports field and we will never be able to, or probably want to completely eradicate healthy competition or friendly rivalry. In many Asian countries, including Thailand,
the group mentality (by which I mean not wanting to show off, not wanting to stand out or be singled out), and kindness, helpfulness and generosity towards one another are strong, and students naturally tend to share and to cooperate, and to want to work and to play together as a team. In the classroom one would always want to be inclusive and to foster a culture where all students felt secure enough to take risks and to make mistakes. There is a great deal of evidence from modern constructivist psychologists such as Vygotsky and Bruner, for example, that students often need the “talk” of their fellow students to help “translate” what the teacher says into their own personal frames of reference. Often one or two students will grasp the concepts the teacher is trying to put across,
and they will have an important role in helping their peers to assimilate the information. From a purely educational point of view, all classrooms should provide opportunities for group work. We are all social beings and the benefits of group work extend into fostering friendship and often improving motivation. That is not to say that such groups cannot compete with each other to produce, say, the best poster about healthy living, but the competition is likely to be friendly and most students will learn to see the good in their own and their competitors' projects. A good teacher will provide a pragmatic mix of cooperation and competition in the classroom. The motivation that can be gained for some students from, say, reading the most books during Book Week, or being the best at multiplication,
should not be underestimated. Effort should always be applauded as loudly as ability. An integral part of our school culture is the House system, which just like Hogwarts, is based on four Houses, one of which all our students belong to. The Houses have regular competitive sporting and other events and a series of competitions every term, from producing a school newspaper to fundraising events. The House system is an important part of our program to improve self-esteem and enhance motivation. By organizing our pupils’ individual competitive traits into teams, most of our students have to cooperate to compete. All these events are held in a spirit of friendly rivalry and the point of the exercise is great fun for all involved! Students can gain House points for any kind of academic
or non-academic behavior that we feel we would like to encourage in the school. I am particularly fond of giving a House point to students who come smiling to me when I arrive at school and wish me a “Good Morning” in English and shake my hand! The House points are recorded and added up at the end of each week, and a winning team is announced at assembly every Friday. Our teachers can all give certificates at assembly, and again these are likely to be for academic work, for effort or for some desirable change in a student’s attitude or behavior. The school concentrates on “positive discipline” and we tend to follow the dictum from Alice in Wonderland after the Dodo’s race that “they must all have prizes”. Peter Hartnell is head teacher at Tara Pattana International School.

Youth Focus
Learning activities at preschool by Edward Emmett
The preschool B1 class has had a great start to the academic school year. All the students have settled in well and new friendships are starting to grow. The class has been introduced to new daily routines which have helped them feel safe in their new classroom environment. The preschool B1 theme this term has been animals in different habitats. We have studied farm, jungle, zoo, desert, and Australian and Antarctic animals. We have looked at animal products,
families, eating habits and dangers in handling animals. The class has started to learn phonics through songs, movements, speech and vocabulary. We have been working on number recognition at the start of term one looking at numbers 0-5. The children have been improving their fine motor skills by using play dough in the classroom and through Montessori science. Preschool B1 then changed theme to minibeasts. We studied the differences
among minibeasts with wings, spots, patterns, colors and the number of legs each minibeast may have. We celebrated Halloween by decorating our classroom with ghosts, monsters and jack-o’-lanterns. The celebration ended with an exciting day of trick-ortreating around the school and playing spooky, scary games. On November 6, Moltripakdee International School embraced Thai culture and tradition with the celebration of Loy
Krathong. Preschool B1 tasted Thai desserts, made krathong, showed respect for their elders and performed a traditional dance. Another important day on the school calendar is
GIS remembers by Mark Beales
Students from Garden International School (GIS) paid respects to victims of war during a moving Remembrance Day service.
At GIS there was a special whole school assembly where a minute’s silence was observed and the Last Post was played on November 11. At 11:11 a.m., students and staff stood for a minute’s silence to remember the fallen. Students also read out several poems, including one by a Vietnamese poet to highlight the fact that Remembrance Day thinks about the victims of conflict from all around the globe. A group of students from near Pattaya travelled to Kanchanaburi to visit a War Cemetery and took part in a ceremony to lay wreaths. Bunker Boys at The Ranch Treasure Hill G.C. (Stableford) Thirty golfers today for Stableford competition at Treasure Hill on another bright sunny morning. The course was quiet and the leading two three-balls were soon heading off into the distance as the remainder of the field played a leisurely round in almost perfect conditions. The course is in great shape apart from several greens which have suffered badly during the recent rainy season, and one suspects that they will need a lot of TLC if they are to recover. Alan Harris produced the outstanding round of the day to win the A flight and finished six points clear of all other contestants in both flights. Annual visitor Neil Jones took second place in the A flight beating Gordon Melia on a countback after Gordon missed a short putt on the 18th green, which produced a rare show of frustration from a player who is normally one of golf ’s gentlemen. Tom McDowell was playing the first game of his annual visit and took the honors in the B flight ahead of Tore Eliassen and Geoff Williams. Results: A Flight 1st Alan Harris (hcp.10) 39 points 2nd Neil Jones (hcp.15) 33 points 3rd Gordon Melia (hcp.17) 33 points B Flight 1st Tom McDowell (hcp.22) 33 points 2nd Tore Eliassen (hcp.20) 31 points 3rd Geoff Williams (hcp.22) 31 points Only three near pins were claimed: Keith Norman, Les Burns and Mike Staunton. Bangprakong Riverside G.C. (Stableford) A nice round number of 32 golfers set off down the 7 motorway for what is normally a straightforward run to Bangprakong, but today the trip was longer than usual due to severe roadworks. The delay didn’t cause too many problems and our groups were soon teeing off immediately after arrival, albeit a little later than scheduled. As usual the course was in excellent condition, although the lakes were so full that they were flooding their banks in places, and even a few bunkers
by Geoff Parker
(which are presumably lower than the water table) were flooded and marked as GUR. Once again the weather was ideal, with a stiff breeze keeping temperatures at a reasonable level, but causing some problems with high trajectory shots. It’s usual for someone to card a high score whenever we play here, and on this day it was the turn of newcomer Brian Edwards, who scored 40 points to win the B flight by three clear points ahead of Steve Durey and Geoff Williams who had to be separated on a countback. Mike Lloyd won the A flight on only his second game back ahead of the ever consistent Tony Scambler and newly-arrived visitor Derek Last year’s winners set to defend their title at next week’s Memorial Tournament. Stephenson. continued his run of good form to finish two points clear of John Hughes and the Results: resurgent PJ Redmond, who had to be A Flight separated on a countback. The shot of the 1st Mike Lloyd (hcp.14) 37 points 2nd Tony Scambler (hcp.10) 36 points day was hit by Derek Stephenson on the 3rd Derek Stephenson (hcp.13) 35 points par three A8 hole where his ball finished two inches from the pin, which would 4th Alan Harris (hcp. 9) 34 points have been an expensive round of drinks given the large field of golfers today. B Flight 1st Brian Edwards (hcp.26) 40 points Results: 2nd Steve Durey (hcp.20) 37 points 3rd Geoff Williams (hcp.22) 37 points A Flight 1st Alan Harris (hcp. 9) 38 points 4th Sid Hashem (hcp.21) 34 points 2nd Gary Close (hcp.15) 37 points 3rd Geoff Cox (hcp.14) 36 points Near Pins: John Graham, Mike Lloyd, 4th Keith Norman (hcp.14) 36 points Geoff Williams and Neil Hurst. Crystal Bay G.C. – C and A courses (Stableford) An organizer’s nightmare as 38 golfers turned up at The Ranch, but somehow we were able to squeeze everyone into the transport and managed to get the two extra groups onto the course. The weather was once again almost perfect as the leading groups set out on the C nine, and the fairways and greens are now in good condition, so everything was set for a great day’s golf. There were no massive scores today, but almost two thirds of the field scored 30 points or more, so countbacks were the order of the day. Alan Harris produced the best score of the day with 38 points to win the A flight one point clear of Gary Close who had a splendid back nine score of 23 points after spraying the ball around on the outward nine. There was a three-way tie on 36 points for third and fourth places with Mike Johns being the unlucky player to miss out on the prizes. In the B flight Gordon Melia
B Flight 1st Gordon Melia (hcp.17) 36 points 2nd PJ Redmond (hcp.23) 34 points 3rd John Hughes (hcp.18) 34 points 4th Neil Griffin (hcp.24) 33 points Near Pins: Gordon Melia, Derek Stephenson, Keith Norman and Neil Jones. The Bunker Boys are a PSC-affiliated golf society, who play out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya Third Road (in front of the fire station, almost opposite the Buffalo Bar). We play on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf competition, come and join us. We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new players are always welcome. Contact Buff on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for all enquiries. Greetings golfers and wannabe golfers. The Tropical Golf Group headed out to the convenient Pattaya Country Club. A later than normal tee time meant some could sleep in later, and others could have extra cups of coffee at The BJ Holiday Lodge. Transport was arranged and off we went for the short drive. Nice. Pattaya Country Club has been going through a lot lately. The quality of the greens continues to go up and down, seemingly each month from very good to poor. We never know. The rating this day was probably best described as a “playable work in progress”. The fairways were in overall good shape but surprisingly also a bit dry and hard, something we sure haven’t seen in a while. It seems the rainy season is over at last and time to turn on the sprinklers, which were on as we left the course. PCC is a very playable layout and usually gives up some very good scores, and this day proved to be the same. Back at BJ’s the counting took some extra time as we set some kind of record with countbacks with six people involved. When all the math was done it came to pass the winner was also PSC golf chairman Mark West (13) with 39 points.
Mark has been on a roll lately. In second place was Daryl Evans (21) with 38 points, winning on countback over Bill McGarvie (11). Bill is heading home after a nice visit to Pattaya and we will miss him. Next were the “35 pointers” and the order of merit showed Graham Buckingham (22), and Tom Cotton (24) in 4th and 5th place. Missing out with the same overall score were Ken Hole and Mashi Kanata. It sure
pays to finish strong. It should be noted that this day also saw two eagles from the group! Mike O’Brien holed out on the par 4, 1st hole with a 5 iron from 175 yards, and Bill McGarvie followed that on the par 4, 4th hole, holing a rescue approach from way out. Wow! Our Community Pattaya Sports Club helps Hand to Hand’s new home by William Macey Duck Square, situated behind Big C South Pattaya, is virtually deserted with the exception of a few sites that have immediate access to external roads around the site. But that does not stop cars and motorbikes using the internal roads as a shortcut and, usually, too quickly. The children that attend Hand to Hand day care center are of preschool age and live on construction sites and various slums in the area. Preschool centers are essential to families who have very little income. The older children go to school but what happens to those under 5 years? One of the parents must stay at home to take care of them, preventing that parent from working. Hence, the importance of centers similar to Hand To Hand. Margaret and Pai run Hand to Hand’s preschool in Duck Square and have two major concerns. The safety of the young children that attend their center, just in case they venture onto the roads, and secondly, bearing in mind the amount of development
going on in Pattaya, at any time the owners could decide to reduce the buildings to rubble and develop what is a very large area. For some time they have been looking for an alternative building that could accommodate 60 children during the day with the issue of safety paramount in their minds. They recently found the perfect location in the Khopai area of Pattaya with no busy roads to concern them and everything needed to take care of the children. Reconstruction is now complete with ample
toilet facilities, a kitchen, store areas and an external, grasscovered, play area. Margaret, having been a teacher previously, has called on all her experience to have a medical room and separate areas where the children can learn to read and write to prepare them for the 10 years or so they will spend in school. The end result is a happy, colorful center where the children can enjoy a really nice day. Donations have been made by a number of companies and individuals including Pattaya
Sports Club who have provided funds to buy desks, toys, aircondition and various items for storage. Margaret and Pai never have a moment to themselves for, in addition to the day care center, they visit the local prison three times per week to help families that need help and regular visits to the local slums. If you would like to make a contribution in any way, please contact William on 086 152 2754 or Margaret on 089 093 6067. Every little bit helps.
Redemptorist Center Chapel Catholic Mass Schedule
Fridge and bikes for Pattaya Orphanage by William Macey Babysitters and a qualified paediatric nurse are on site 24 hours per day at the Pattaya Orphanage to care for the 70 plus babies under the age of 3. There are 25 children under the age of 6 months and when Pattaya Sports Club visited there were twin girls that had just arrived and were 1-weekold. They do not have the benefit of the mother’s milk or the love that every child deserves, but the staff care for the children as if they were their own. The numbers rarely change for there is always a request from a hospital somewhere asking if they could accept another child. No child is ever turned away. Cleanliness and health issues are paramount and anyone entering the nursery must wash with an antiseptic gel and have their temperature taken as a safeguard. Good
quality and well-preserved food is so important, which was the subject of a conversation that Toy had with Pattaya Sports Club for they were given two second-hand refrigerators, so long ago that they could not remember when, which were almost ready for that happy retirement home on the scrap metal site. One had given up completely and the other was not far away. It was obvious that a new refrigerator was essential. Pattaya Sports Club never turns down the opportunity to help Toy and Pattaya Orphanage so a new large refrigerator was ordered and delivered much to the excitement of the staff. The babies did not take too much notice but they will certainly benefit from food that will remain fresh and uncontaminated. On the day the refrigerator was delivered, Rick Bevington just happened to have five

bicycles that he had completely overhauled, kindly donated these for the children to use around the center. The children, who could ride or wanted to ride, appreciated the gift and there were smiles all around. With 160 children at the orphanage they always welcome donations of food,
clothes or money, so if you could help in any way please contact William on 086 152 2754 or Pattaya Sports Club on 038 361 167. Rick is always looking for bicycles that are no longer being used and is happy to collect these from a local address if need be.

You & Your Pets
Road trip with your little tiger by Dr. RJ Peters
Traveling with a dog may be easier than having a cat along, but with proper preparations, taking your little tiger can be just as enjoyable. Follow these pointers to help things go smoothly: * Use disposable litter pans or make your own using aluminum baking pans. Place 3 to 4 cups of litter into a plastic bag for each day you plan to be gone. Store them in a box or bag, placing one into the aluminum pan with the sides of the bag wrapped over the edge of the pan. Each day, remove the bag and replace it with a clean one. No scooping and little or no odor. * Take a bucket with cleaning supplies: spray bottles of water and cleaning fluid, odor control products, rags or paper towels, a scrub brush, and plenty of bags to collect waste. * Grooming supplies: brush or comb, waterless shampoo, and cotton swabs to clean ears. * First aid kit. More cotton swabs, antibiotic ointments (one for eyes, one for external use on a cut or sore), any medications your cat may be taking. * Veterinary papers. Keep the
Cats for You in Pattaya
Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Contact Paul and Sandra on 0852875004 or look at their useful website http://cats4youinpattaya.webs.com/
Oreo
This small kitten has had a tough start to her little life and has some spinal damage. She can get around well on her own by scooting about on her bottom. Oreo also has to wear nappies so any prospective new owner would have to be prepared to change them on a regular basis, just like any other baby!
pages in a notebook, preferably with the pages laminated to protect them. If your cat needs veterinary care while traveling, these records will be invaluable, not to mention possibly required if you cross borders. Vaccinations should be up to date, with papers to prove it. * A recent photo of your cat should be kept in the notebook, too. If the cat gets lost, this will help to prove the cat is yours. * Up-to-date identification. * Take water from home. Cats don’t drink a lot, so it should be fairly easy to keep a liter or two handy to prevent digestive upsets from unfamiliar water. * Toys. Once accustomed to new surroundings, cats may
need some mental stimulation and will enjoy playing. * A pet carrier. Never carry a cat loose in your arms outside your vehicle. Cats are especially prone to being suddenly frightened and may dart away. * For exercise during a stop, take kitty for walks on a leash. They like to stretch their legs, too. * Take a list of pet-friendly lodgings so you don’t have to waste time searching for a place to stay overnight. Never just leave your cat inside the vehicle while you’re in a room. Traveling with a pet can be a lot of work, and some people won’t bother. But others feel it’s worth it. Just be prepared and things will go smoothly.
You’re probably prepared in case a member of your family gets injured or has a medical problem. But do you know what to do if your pet chokes on a bone or is involved in an accident? This Pattaya Today feature will help answer some common first aid questions related to your pets. Such information could mean the difference between life and death.
Seizures
Jelly
This fun-loving playful puss has been with us for a while now. She did go to a new home but was picked on by the other resident cat and was brought back. She has now grown into a very loving cat that just loves to get under your feet. She enjoys gardening and in fact likes to help you with whatever you are doing.
Madge
Although she looks a little stern in this photo Madge is one of the loveliest and liveliest cats that we have here. She just loves a good cuddle and would definitely need a home with a garden to play in as one of her favorite pastimes is tearing about on the grass and climbing up the trees.
Yana
Yana is named after the Russian lady who found her with a broken leg about a year or so ago. Her leg is fully healed now and has a steel pin permanently and very successfully implanted. This friendly cat likes lots of love and will sit on your lap all day, if you have the time that is!
Cat Corner Tip
Like humans, pets also can have seizures. If your pet has a seizure, keep these tips in mind: *The seizure will generally pass on its own in three minutes or less. *During the seizure, you must make sure the animal is safe (remove all objects from the area, including any movable furniture, toys, etc.) *Don’t put your hands or your face near the animal’s mouth. *Do NOT pull its tongue out of the mouth. Unlike humans, animals don’t swallow their tongues during a seizure. *When the seizure is over, contact your vet.

Going to the Dogs... Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.
-Robert A. Heinlein
If your cat is exhibiting behavior problems, the first thing to do is ensure that the cat is healthy. Get a veterinary examination to rule out any medical issues that could be causing the cat to act in unexpected or so-called inappropriate ways, such as soiling outside the litter box. Make sure it’s not a urinary infection, for example. Many behaviors that we interpret as abnormal are actually quite normal. They may not fit our expectations or may take place within an environment that is not normal for the cat. For example, sudden changes in behavior may be related to changes in the home. Cats like routine, so anything that upsets that routine can result in undesirable behaviors. Dr. Peters is the author of three informative and entertaining books about household pets. They include Our Amazing Cats, and Our Amazing Cats Vol. 2, now available from Amazon Books and at www.ouramazingcats.com. Her newest book is Our Amazing Dogs. To download eBook versions of any or all three books (about 200 baht each), go to http://youniquesolutions.com/3Books.html. Dr. Peters also publishes a free newsletter, The Kitty Times.
